March has been a big month for the river cruise industry, with the launch of a combined 12 new ships among 3 lines.
Viking River Cruises christened 10 new ships on March 20, this qualified as a Guinness World Record, with a count of 8 ships inaugurated in one day, as two of the ships had already been sailing without a christening. This event held in was held Amsterdam, and concurrently at the shipyard in Germany. Each ship has her own Godmother, and the event was attended by around 800 people. These ships feature a host of firsts in their interiors, including the all weather indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, which has retractable floor to ceiling glass doors.
In 2014 Viking plans to launch 12 more new longships, these ship are scheduled to sail the popular itineraries, including Tulips & Windmills, Passage to Eastern Europe, Grand European Tour, Danube Waltz, Romantic Danube, and Rhine Getaway.
On March 22, 2013 AMA Waterways christened her new ship the AmaVida. This vessel with a capacity of 106 passengers was christened by actress Sharon Stone in a traditional ceremony in Porto, Portugal. The itinerary will be exclusively in Portugal’s Douro River Valley. The itinerary features 3 nights in a Lisbon hotel, followed by 7 days of cruising, roundtrip from Porto.
Uniworld launched her new ship Queen Isabel on March 22, 2013 in Porto, Portugal, with actress Andie MacDowell acting as her Godmother. The maiden sailing will be March 28, 2013 and this already sold out sailing, will play host to 118 lucky passengers. The itinerary will feature Portugal, and Spain on the breathtaking Douro River.
