Arriving in Miami, but either flying or cruising out of Ft Lauderdale? Here
are two good solutions.
Super shuttle is located on the lower level of Miami airport. You need only exit the terminal, no reservation required. www.supershuttle.com The price on 5/1/2013 was $37 for one person and $28 for the second person. Taxi service to the Ft Lauderdale airport is around $80. Super shuttle to Port Everglades was $67 for 2 people based on a web quote, actual price may be different without reservations.
Getting to Ft Lauderdale Airport from Miami Airport by “Tri-Rail”
Tri-Rail Bus shuttle location is currently between the Dolphin and Flamingo parking garages at Miami airport. In the future it will depart from the Miami Intermodal Center, but is currently not completed.
Go downstairs to lower level, and use the exit doors in the center between the two parking garages.
Super shuttle is to your left.
Now cross both lines of traffic, and continue walking toward the parking garages along the sidewalk.
On you right along the wall is the sign for tri rail above door, the parking garages will be to your left.
Inside the office there is a ticket kiosk, and seating. The ticket dispenser takes either cash or credit cards. Select service to the destination that you want. In this case we chose Ft Lauderdale Airport, currently priced at $3.75 per person
Wait for the bus to arrive. Bus number 133 takes you to the Hialeah Tri Rail Center. Be sure to check the bus schedule. Click here for the bus schedule.
Currently the northbound train is typically hourly, with extra trains during peak times. Primarily a commuter train, there are no luggage bays, but it was not a problem carrying luggage.
See the tri rail website for more schedule information. Click here for the Tri Rail train schedule.
Alight at the first Ft Lauderdale stop.
Exit the
train and cross over the tracks to the southbound side where you will find the free bus to the Ft Lauderdale airport, which is included in your ticket.
From the airport you can take a taxi to the cruise port for around $10 to $15. Or you can get a taxi from the Tri Rail station for a bit more, and skip the shuttle bus trip.
Total cost from Miami Airport to Port Everglades for 2 people, including taxi ride was $22.50, total time involved was between 11/2 hours and 2 hours. Other options were SuperShuttle, prescheduled for $67, according to the website, or a taxi for around $80. The tri-rail was an easy, pleasant, affordable means of transportation.
News for the future:
The Miami Intermodal Center’s link to the tri rail system is currently scheduled for completion late 2013. When completed this will link the tri rail directly to Miami airport by means of a 1.25-mile long metro called Miami Mover. At this point you will no longer need to catch bus 133, but will take the free Miami Mover directly from the airport to the Miami Intermodal Center.
