Cruise Ship Hits Reef and Runs Aground


A cruise ship hit a reef and ran aground in Papua New Guinea this weekend BBC News is reporting.

Coral Adventurer was on its first cruise in two months after an elderly passenger died after being left by the ship on a remote island in Australia in late October.

Yesterday, the ship ran aground after hitting a reef off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea.

All passengers and crew members are reportingly safe and early reports say that there is no damage to the ship’s hull. The cruise ship is expected to have further inspections today.

There were a total of 123 passengers and crew members on the ship when it hit the reef.

The current 12-day cruise was originally scheduled to end on December 30, 2025.

The BBC reported that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority did not receive a distress call from Coral Adventurer.

The ship’s previous cruise was cut short after an elderly passenger was accidently left on a remote island. When the ship realized the woman was missing several hours later, they returned to look for her. Her body was found the following day.

That cruise was canceled and all passengers received a full refund.

Coral Expeditions is Australia’s longest established and most awarded expedition cruise operator. The cruise line was founded 40 years ago on offering environmentally sensitive cruises on the Great Barrier Reef.
