Cruise Worker Claims He Was Dismissed and Disembarked in Cozumel After Giving Notice

A Carnival Cruise Line entertainment staff member has shared a viral post alleging that he was abruptly removed from his ship in Cozumel, Mexico – just days before his planned resignation date.

Trevor Johnson, a (former) member of the Fun Squad aboard Carnival Valor, said he had intended to leave his position on 20th November after submitting his resignation earlier in the month.

In a statement posted to social media, Johnson described being woken by “a 6:00 a.m. knock” on his cabin door and told he had one hour to pack and disembark.

“How embarrassing and devastating it was to pack up my entire life in just one hour – with no chance to say proper goodbyes to my onboard family,

“I submitted my resignation on November 4th with the intention of leaving on November 20th… I wanted to allow time for a smooth transition.”

He said the decision to remove him from the ship came from Carnival’s shoreside management.

“It’s unfortunate that one person’s dislike or hate can dictate someone else’s growth,” he added, expressing both disappointment and gratitude toward his colleagues.

Online Reaction and Speculation

The post quickly spread across cruise discussion forums and Reddit, where users debated whether the situation amounted to a termination or a procedural sign-off.

One commenter noted:

“Sometimes cruise lines will change your sign-off date to coincide with a specific port that’s authorised to let crew leave.”

Others, however, suggested the incident sounded more like a disciplinary removal. “We call this the ‘6 o’clock knock’,” wrote one Reddit user, explaining that it usually indicates a termination rather than a voluntary departure.

Another commenter observed:

“If he gave two weeks’ notice, that means he broke his contract. Every crew member signs a fixed-term contract – when that contract ends, that’s when you can choose not to return.”

Several users also questioned Johnson’s account, suggesting his social media post may not tell the full story.

Still, others expressed sympathy for the suddenness of his departure, with one writing that it was “pretty harsh to have to leave in a foreign country like that.”

Cruise Contracts and Crew Rights

Cruise ship employment differs significantly from land-based work. Crew typically sign fixed-term contracts – often lasting several months – and are expected to serve them in full.

Unlike many shore-based roles, there is generally no “notice period” for early resignation, and cruise lines are under no obligation to allow a crew member to remain onboard after indicating an intent to leave.

If a crew member resigns mid-contract, the company may require them to disembark at the next available port where crew changes are permitted.

According to one former crew member commenting online, “It’s not uncommon for a company to ‘walk’ you off the ship once you resign – it’s business, not personal.”

Carnival’s Response

As of publication, Carnival Cruise Line has not issued a public statement regarding Johnson’s claims, and it’s unlikely they will.

The company’s employment policies, however, typically stipulate that crew must fulfil their contracts unless otherwise agreed with management.

Whether Johnson’s early departure was a procedural disembarkation or a disciplinary termination remains unconfirmed.

A Difficult Goodbye

In his farewell message, Johnson reflected on his three years at sea and said he remained proud of his time with Carnival.

“From the Bridge all the way down to the Engine Room, I truly loved and appreciated every single crew member,” he wrote. “I came aboard once as a first-time guest, and I now leave as a former crew member.”

He concluded his post by hinting that he might share more details after returning home: “Stay tuned for what’s next… because I’m not done yet.”
