Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces Sustainable Serveware In New Partnership

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced some new sustainable serveware for room service orders, in a bid to cut down on single-use plastics.

NCL sustainable serveware

The new trays are made from 50% recycled materials and will replace the traditional porcelain plates/bowls and the plastic wrap used to cover them.

It’s down to a new partnership with Drinique, which is a manufacturer of unbreakable, reusable serveware that already works with several hotel chains, nightclubs, restaurants and more.

The new serveware is already in use on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, and will be rolled out to the rest of the fleet by the end of 2024.

This is the latest move by NCL to cut down on single-use plastics on ships.

As part of our commitment to reduce the use of single plastic on board, we continuously search for opportunities to implement new environmentally friendly practices, while keeping our mission of delivering more experiences so our guests can vacation better with us top of mind

We’re excited to continue to work with Drinique to introduce these new reusable bento boxes across our fleet and continue doing our part to protect and preserve the environment.”

Mark Kansley, senior vice president of hotel operations at Norwegian Cruise Line

It was the first cruise line to remove single-use plastic straws and single-use plastic water bottles from ships in 2020, with an estimated saving of 77 million straws and 27 million water bottles.

The cruise line has committed to a fleet-wide recycling policy where possible and is aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

The next big step of that plan will be making sure at least half the fleet is capable of using shore power technology by the end of 2024.
