Cruise Line Expands Program to Donate More Unserved Food From Ships

One of Carnival Corporation’s cruise lines is expanding a program to donate more prepared, unserved food from their ships.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Costa Toscana cruise ship

Costa Cruises started the 4GOODFOOD program in 2017 and is now expanding it. The program donates prepared, unserved food from cruise ships to local community food banks.

The food is “ready to eat” meals prepared on board but did not get served in the ship’s restaurants.

The cruise line announced an agreement with two more ports (Palma de Mallorca and Valencia) that brings the total number to 16 that benefit from this program.

To date, the cruise line has donated more than 300,000 portions of food in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Jan Swartz, executive vice president of strategic operations for Carnival Corporation, gave the following statement:

“One of the many ways we create unforgettable happiness for our guests is through world-class food and dining experiences on our ships.

We are committed to doing this responsibly, and we rely on the dedication and creativity of our 160,000 talented team members who constantly find new ways to reduce food waste from our operations, often while enhancing the guest experience.

“Our goal is to have less uneaten food and, with the remaining food, find ways to ensure it doesn’t go to waste, like doing our part to help communities facing food scarcity.”

In addition to meal donations, phases of the 4GOODFOOD program have included revising more than 500 recipes to make meal production more efficient.

Carnival Corporation is looking to expand the program to more ports in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Earlier this year, Carnival surpassed its 2025 food waste reduction goal, leveraging human ingenuity and new technologies to cut 42% of food loss and waste compared to five years ago (2019) and is tracking toward its 50% reduction target set for 2030.

Carnival Paradise Cruise Cancelled Due to Tampa Port Closure

Hurricane Helene has had quite the impact on cruises from the US in the past few days, including one outright cancellation – a sailing on Carnival Paradise.

The ship was due to depart on 26th September, but the ship was unable to return to the port following the end of the prior cruise due to the hurricane.

Indeed, it was kept out at sea until Saturday 28th, meaning the 4-night sailing would’ve been reduced to just 2 nights if it went ahead.

As a result, Carnival contacted guests to let them know that the sailing would have to be cancelled.

Thanks for your patience while you waited for updates about your cruise. Port officials have informed us that we will not be able to return to Tampa until tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, 9/28. This would not allow us enough time to deliver the experience we had planned for you. So, disappointingly, we must cancel the sailing.

Email sent to Carnival guests

Passengers will be given a full refund, and it’s expected that further compensation will be made available. Usually in these circumstances, guests will get a future cruise credit, essentially granting them a free cruise (or a heavily discounted one) in future.

Conversely, the guests on the 5-night sailing that departed on 21st September are currently enjoying an extended cruise that will now last 7 nights, although it’s not clear whether any compensation will be offered for affected travel plans.

Several ships have suffered delays due to the closures of Tampa along with Port Canaveral and Jacksonville, but it seems that Carnival Paradise is the only ship to have a sailing completely cancelled.

Great Scott! Audition Call For Popular Musical To Be Staged On Star Of The Seas

A casting call has gone out to anyone who wishes to audition for the Back to the Future musical which we now know will be hosted on Royal Caribbean’s new ship Star of the Seas.

Back to the Future on Star of the Seas

The musical, which first debuted in Manchester in 2020, has gone on to huge success in both the West End and on Broadway, and is noted for its outstanding visual effects alongside its great music and story.

The cruise line has put out an open call and will also be hosting invited auditions in London between 7th and 11th October 2024 at Pineapple Studios.

The call is looking for both singers and actors, who will be required to perform the show 3-4 times per week. Both principal and ensemble cast members are sought.

Successful crew will also need to perform in an “original Royal Caribbean signature production” 3-4 times per week as well.

Back to the Future isn’t the only famous stage show to make it to cruise ships. Icon of the Seas, the sister ship of Star of the Seas, features “Wizard of Oz”, while other Royal Caribbean ships offer “Cats”, “Mamma Mia”, and “Grease”. “Beetlejuice” and “The Donna Summer Musical” feature on NCL ships.

Star of the Seas is set to debut in 2025 and will be based out of Port Canaveral.

Without spoiling the end of the show – it’ll be fascinating to see how they pull it off in a cruise ship theatre!

Carnival Cruise Line Cancels Weekend Cruise Out of Tampa

Carnival Cruise Line has canceled a weekend cruise out of Tampa due to the port being closed and the ship arriving back over two days later than scheduled.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Carnival Paradise in Tampa

The September 26 sailing on Carnival Paradise has been canceled. Carnival Cruise Line was hoping the port would reopen so the ship could sail a shortened three day cruise. Unfortunately, that’s unable to happen.

Carnival issued a statement saying that the cruise ship would not be able to return to Tampa until tomorrow afternoon. Because of the late arrival, Carnival decided to cancel the cruise and give all guests a full refund.

Since the ship isn’t arriving until tomorrow afternoon, it didn’t make sense to sail a one and a half day cruise when it was scheduled as a four day cruise.

The update that Carnival Cruise Line sent to guests who were booked on the canceled sailing can be read below:

“Carnival Paradise 09/26/24: Thanks for your patience while you waited for updates about your cruise. Port officials have informed us that we will not be able to return to Tampa until tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, 9/28.

“This would not allow us enough time to deliver the experience we had planned for you. So, disappointingly, we must cancel the sailing. A full refund will be issued. Please check your email for full details.

“We are sorry mother nature interrupted your vacation plans. We hope to see you on another Carnival cruise soon.”

The September 26 canceled cruise was originally scheduled for a four night cruise to the Western Caribbean with a port stop in Cozumel, Mexico.

8-Year-Old Boy Airlifted from Princess Ship Due to Medical Emergency

A dramatic event unfolded during the latest Royal Princess cruise, as an 8-year-old boy had to be airlifted from the ship due to a medical emergency.

Royal Princess Evacuation

The boy, named Daniel, was diagnosed with appendicitis while on a 13-night cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii.

Daniel began to feel unwell on only the second day of the cruise, with the ship’s doctor determining that he needed immediate medical attention due to a high fever and his general worsening condition.

The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to transport Daniel and his family to a hospital in Eureka, California, where he underwent emergency surgery.

The rescue was captured on camera, showcasing the Coast Guard’s prompt and efficient response.

The operation took place at 8 am and was described as challenging by pilot Lt. Katherine McDonnell, due to the heavy fog. But she was able to guide the helicopter to the ship, where Philip Morie rappelled down and was able to secure Daniel in a rescue basket.

The ship was able to continue on with the cruise without any impact on the itinerary, and Daniel’s successful surgery means he’s expected to make a full recovery.
