Why It’s Worth So Much

Life jackets are meant to save lives.  They are also sometimes used on cruise ships for candid photos. But this one just made auction history.

According to news reports, a canvas-and-cork life jacket worn by Titanic survivor Laura Mabel Francatelli shattered expectations on Saturday (April 18), selling for £670,000 at Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire.

That’s a staggering $906,000 in US dollars (or like 450 cruises).

Titanic life jacket sells at auction

It’s believed to be the only life jacket from an actual Titanic survivor ever to hit the auction block in the 114 years since the ship went down and 1,500 people died.

Before the auction even began, estimates put the life jacket more in the £250,000–£350,000 ballpark ($338,000–$473,000 USD).  So, it’s safe to say that this life jacket might have saved someone’s retirement plan as well.

Francatelli, a 31-year-old first-class passenger and secretary to fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon, wore the vest before stepping into Lifeboat No. 1.

Once safely aboard the rescue ship Carpathia, she and other survivors signed it.  This apparently added even more value to the piece, turning a simple flotation device into a signed piece of living history.

The jacket still shows its original details: 12 cork-filled pockets, shoulder rests, and side straps.

Yes, life jackets have come a long way since then, notably the “Here-I-am-orange” color that is absent from this pricey piece.

But a life jacket wasn’t the only piece from the Titanic that sold at this auction. A seat cushion from one of the Titanic’s lifeboats reached £390,000 (about $527,000 USD).

That cushion, with its White Star Line plaque, was won by the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri, where it will go on public display.

By the way, that museum is pretty amazing and even if you’re not a history buff you will walk away impressed.  At least, we were on our visits.  We’ve been multiple times.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said he was “ecstatic” with the results and that “it reflects the ongoing interest and passion for the story of the Titanic, and its passengers and crew”.

The Titanic and Cruise Fans

Some people think that cruisers are superstitious about even bringing up the tragedy that befell the Titanic.  But the truth is that this horrible event actually helped bring sweeping changes in how ships operate.

Because of changes that came after the Titanic’s sinking, more lifeboats, better safety drills, international iceberg patrols, and stricter rules that protect every passenger sailing today were implemented.

While most of us would not be willing to part with almost $1 million for a life jacket from the Titanic, we can be glad that cruise ships are safer than ever because of that sad night.

And while a life jacket on a modern cruise ship probably costs about $100, its value can’t have a price tag if it’s ever really needed.

We’re just glad we don’t have to lug them down hallways before muster drills anymore on most major cruise lines.  Gotta love those digital e-muster drills.

Legend of the Seas Heads Out to Sea for the First Time

Royal Caribbean’s next new cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, departed from the Meyer Turku shipyard and headed out to sea for the first time.

Legend of the Seas sea trials

The cruise ship will spend the next 10 days on sea trials, the next major construction milestone for the newest Icon class ship from Royal Caribbean.

More than 2,000 engineers and specialists will put Legend of the Seas through a comprehensive series of technical tests to evaluate its systems. This includes from testing how the ship moves in the open water to pushing its engine performance to the limits and more.

The cruise ship will cover approximately 2,400 nautical miles before returning to the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland for its final stages of construction.

Legend of the Seas will debut on July 4, 2026 and spend a few months sailing week-long cruises in Europe. In the fall, the ship will reposition to Florida for the winter 2026-2027 season.

MSC-Euribia-in-port.jpg

MSC Euribia Leaves Dubai and Clears Strait of Hormuz

MSC Euribia hasn’t had any cruise passengers on board in 28 days after the ship completed its last sailing on March 21, 2026.  But today brings some welcome news as the ship has not only left port in Dubai but has cleared the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Now, the ship is on its way to Europe, and it looks like the ship made its move just in time.  The 6,300-passenger vessel was already midway through the Strait when reports emerged of Iran closing the waterway once again and even firing on other vessels.  This quickly began a massive U-turn for ships in the region that were hoping to exit the strait during the short-lived window.

While marine tracking data hasn’t updated in the last 9 hours, the ship’s last reported position shows MSC Euribia heading southeast as it rounded the Musandam Peninsula (the sharp eastern “bend” where the Persian Gulf narrows).

From there, the ship is on course to the Gulf of Oman and eventually Northern Europe.

During the conflict in this region, it has not been uncommon for ships to turn off their AIS transponders once heading through the Strait of Hormuz.

Independent trackers previously showed the vessel making good progress at around 18–22 knots after departing Dubai on April 17.

This positive development means the ship should arrive in time for its summer season.  News outlets like Cruise Industry News have already confirmed that MSC Cruises plans to resume cruise operations earlier than expected, with a March 16 departure from Kiel, Germany on May 16, 2026.

All following Northern Europe cruises are expected to operate as originally scheduled and guests who were impacted by canceled sailings will have the option to transfer bookings to the May 16 or later departure dates.

Current Availability on MSC’s Website

As of April 18, 2026, MSC’s booking site already shows Northern Europe sailings as available.

The listings include popular 7-night roundtrip cruises visiting Norwegian fjord ports such as Hellesylt, Geiranger, Alesund, and Flaam, with prices starting from around $1,355 per person (including fees and taxes).

As Cruise Fever previously reported, 5 of the 6 ships that were effectively “stuck” in the Persian Gulf due to the Middle East conflict have now been able to transit the strait and begin the process of heading to a new port in less volatile waters.

Holland America Line Names New Tulip, Savour the Journey

Holland America Line celebrated the naming of its newest signature tulip, Savour the Journey, at the iconic Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. The ceremony took place a day before the cruise line’s 153rd anniversary.

The orange tulip reflects the cruise line’s Dutch heritage and longstanding ties to Dutch culture, craftsmanship and tradition.

The tulip was created by KP de Geus of Maveridge International exclusively for Holland America Line.

The formal dedication was led by Captains Eric Barhorst and Jeroen Baijens, tulip grower KP de Geus, and Dutch Olympic medalist Joy Beune.

Joy Beune has partnered with Holland America Line since 2025 and she served as the godmother for the naming of Savour the Journey.

Nico Bleichrodt, vice president, international sales and marketing, Holland America Line, gave the following statement:

“Our Dutch heritage is central to who we are, and naming our Savour the Journey tulip at Keukenhof is a meaningful expression of that connection. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to name this tulip and for the care and craftsmanship behind it. It reflects the sense of intention that defines our brand and how we invite guests to experience the world.”

Godmother Joy Beune, added:

“It’s truly special to serve as godmother to this tulip. There’s nothing more Dutch than tulips and speed skating — both are part of our national identity. I love that Holland America Line is honoring its Dutch roots in such a meaningful way, and ‘Savour the Journey’ reflects a mindset I really connect with: taking pride in the path, not just the finish line.”

70-Year-Old Passenger Goes Overboard from Carnival Cruise Ship, Search Underway

A passenger in his 70s is missing after going overboard from Carnival Splendor late Friday night / early Saturday morning while the ship was on a 4-day sailing that is scheduled to return to Sydney, Australia on Sunday.

Tracking data shows the 3,000-passenger Carnival ship doing a zig zag search pattern while the search is underway.

Family Reported the Man Missing

According to news reports, the man was travelling with family, who quickly noticed he was missing and alerted the ship’s crew around 2:00 AM.

A review of the onboard CCTV footage confirmed what happened next.

In a statement, a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson said:

“The male guest was travelling with family, who alerted the ship’s crew of a possible missing person, and a review of the CCTV footage confirmed the guest’s action.”

Some reports add that the footage showed the man apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped overboard.

The incident occurred about 18 miles northeast of Moreton Island.

Carnival also added in a statement that “all appropriate authorities have been alerted and Carnival will assist authorities in their investigation upon the ship’s return to Sydney. Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one.”

Large-Scale Search & Rescue Operation

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is leading a major search and rescue effort after being notified early Saturday morning. Resources deployed include:

  • Challenger jets from Cairns and Melbourne
  • Five rescue helicopters from the Brisbane area
  • Six surface vessels
  • Assistance from Queensland Police

Passengers onboard have reported seeing rescue helicopters searching the waters nearby as the ship remained in the area.

Man-overboard incidents are rare on modern cruise ships, but when these events do take place crews quickly review CCT footage and enact protocols to try to recover the individual as quickly as possible.

At this stage, the search is still active and no update on the passenger’s status has been released just yet.

Carnival has already emailed guests for the next sailing out of Sydney, saying that it will be delayed and that guests should wait to hear from the cruise line with new embarkation times.

5 of 6 Cruise Ships Now Transiting the Strait of Hormuz

After weeks of being stuck due to the conflict in the Middle East, there is finally movement for cruise ships in the Persian Gulf. Celestyal Discovery was the first to successfully clear the Strait of Hormuz and more are on their way.

The Malta flagged ship has been docked and stationary for approximately 47 days. It first arrived in Dubai around March 1 and remained there until its departure earlier today, April 17.

The situation has changed quite a bit since that first departure. New satellite tracking data as of early April 18 shows that nearly the entire stranded fleet is now moving, making a run for the exit.

Real-Time Fleet Movement

Cruise Fever has been tracking these ship movements all day and tracking data that we have checked through multiple sources (Cruise Mapper and Vessel Finder) confirms that these ships are on the move.

What started as just Celestyal Discovery pulling out of port and the first to clear the Strait of Hormuz, has turned into 5 of the 6 stranded ships now finally moving.

Here is the status of these ships as of the time of this update:

  • Celestyal Discovery: Successfully cleared the Strait. Currently sailing at 15.3 knots with a new destination of Suez, Egypt.

  • Celestyal Journey: Underway at 18.5 knots heading toward Khasab. This ends a 49-day stay in Doha.

  • MSC Euribia: Departed Dubai and is currently traveling at 18.4 knots toward Muscat, Oman.

  • Mein Schiff 5: Underway at 17.9 knots heading East toward the Strait.

  • Mein Schiff 4: Formerly docked in Abu Dhabi, the vessel is now underway at 16.3 knots.

  • Aroya Manara: The only vessel remaining stationary and moored in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

It should be noted that no passengers are on the ships, as the vessel is just repositioning to new locations.

Why the Ships Are Moving Now

This move is a very big step, as the ships have been effectively “stuck” since the Strait of Hormuz became a high-risk zone for commercial travel in late February.

As Cruise Fever reported earlier in the crisis, the situation forced several cruise lines to effectively shut down operations on impacted ships and cancel dozens of cruises.

The ship movements follow a major breaking development announced by Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who stated that the Strait of Hormuz is now “completely open” to all commercial vessels for the remaining period of the current Israel-Lebanon ceasefire.

Mein Schiff 4 cruise ship

Ships must follow a coordinated route designated by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization.  President Donald Trump welcomed the news on Truth Social, stating that the strait is “FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE.”  This news enabled the five ships to head for the exit today.

While the reopening remains temporary and conditional based on the ceasefire, it at least helps the chances of safe movement out of the Persian Gulf and could lead to the repositioning for the other stranded vessels. We will continue to monitor the AIS tracking data as these ships navigate the final miles of the Strait.

For now, it looks like cruise ships saw their window of opportunity and they are taking it.

Sun-Princess-Sphere-class-cruise-ship.jpg

The Largest in Fleet History

Princess Cruises is going bigger.  The cruise line just announced a new order for three ships in an all-new class that will be the largest in the fleet.

The next-generation ships will be part of a brand-new Voyager Class and will be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.  The vessels are scheduled for delivery in late 2035, 2038, and 2039.

Breaking the Record: 183,000 Tons

For years, Princess fans have watched the fleet grow. The popular Grand Class ships are around 110,000-115,000 gross tons, and the more recent Royal Class (like Discovery Princess) moved up to 145,000 tons.

Then the Sphere Class came out in 2024 and 2025 at 177,500 tons in size.  But Sun Princess and Star Princess are not as large as what’s coming in nine years.

Introducing the new Voyager Class:

  • Gross Tonnage: 183,000 (The largest ever for Princess)
  • Guest Capacity: About 4,700 passengers

Evolution of the Sphere Class

While the Voyager Class is a new platform, Princess isn’t starting from scratch. These ships will build on the foundation of the current Sphere Class.

That means we can expect the line to keep many elements of Sun and Star, including reimagined versions of the signature Piazza and outer deck spaces.

And just like the Sphere Class ships, the three Voyager ships will be dual-fuel powered, mainly by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Princess President Gus Antorcha stated that the company is using extensive guest research to find the right balance between “evolving our proven winners and introducing new concepts.”

The Timeline

By nailing down those delivery dates as far out as 2039, Princess is making sure it has a steady stream of growth for the next 13 years.

Seven other ships are currently under contract for different Carnival Corporation brands between now and 2033, so these three Voyager-class ships represent the long-term future of the Princess brand.

Details on specific amenities and where these ships will sail will be released in the coming years, but for now, this is big news for Princess Cruises, and the cruise line sees a bright future ahead.

Carnival Cruise Ship Rescues Man and His Cat, Stranded in a Sailboat

Every so often we hear stories of cruise ships coming to the aid of boaters in trouble, but this week’s rescue had an extra passenger on board.  And because “who doesn’t love a good cat story,” this one is already being picked up by local news outlets.

Carnival Legend rescues man and cat

On Tuesday night, April 14, 2026, Carnival Legend was making its way from Galveston, Texas to Cozumel, Mexico when the crew spotted emergency flares lighting up the sky.

Tracking data shows that the ship diverted course around 9:00 PM that night.

Cruise passengers on board said the cruise ship put a bright spotlight on the sailboat which was going up and down in the waves “rocking heavily” and looked distressed.

The captain of the ship stopped to help the sailor in need, and the crew found that the man had his cat with him, Dahlia.  The pair had been adrift for four days.

Both the man and his feline companion were brought safely onto the cruise ship, where the man received medical attention and Dahlia became an instant celebrity among the crew.

Other ships might have their Chief Dog Officers but for at least a short time this one had a cat getting all of the attention.

Passenger Reaction

Several cruise passengers that are currently sailing on Carnival Legend and witnessed the rescue gave Cruise Fever some insights as to what it was like with one saying, “Was inspiring to watch the entire event.”

Another praised the rescuers: “They have an amazing team. Praises to Captain Vito and the entire Carnival Team.”  The whole team was praised for how they handled the ordeal with one passenger saying, “It was awesome to watch the crew be so professional and compassionate.”

How Often Does This Happen?

You might wonder how a vacation cruise suddenly turns into a search-and-rescue mission. It happens more often than most realize.

Under international law, every ship at sea has a “duty to render assistance” to anyone in distress.

While exact numbers vary year to year, major cruise lines often report several rescues every year. The Gulf and the Caribbean are hotspots for these incidents because of the sheer volume of marine traffic that flows through these waters.

The crew still keeps a “lookout” with binoculars, but ships today use advanced radar and infrared cameras that can spot heat signatures in the water long before the human eye can.

Of course, in this case the flares were seen by passengers as well, and the stranded vessel was a very short distance from the cruise ship.

The man and his cat stayed on board the Carnival Legend until the ship reached its scheduled stop in Cozumel the next morning. Local authorities were ready at the pier to assist the two with their next steps.

Norwegian Aura is under construction at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. It will be NCL’s largest ship and their first built at Monfalcone. The vessel will be 10% larger than her predecessors at 170,000 gross tons. It will carry 3,880 guests (double occupancy) in over 1,970 cabins.

The expanded pool deck will be 20% larger and have additional seating, an extra hot tub, open lounge areas and a nearby Kids’ Aqua Park.

At the heart of Norwegian Aura’s onboard experience will be Ocean Heights, an all-new open-air activities complex designed as a true multi-generational hub.

Guests can enjoy the most slides of any Norwegian ship, including Eclipse Racers, the Company’s first dueling waterslides; Aura Free Fall, a drop-in body waterslide that plunges guests down exhilarating twists and turns; and The Wave, a pendulum-style raft slide designed to accommodate up to four guests.

The cruise ship will also have a 82-foot Aura Ropes Course, a 25-foot rock-climbing wall and Aura Midway, which offers easygoing fun with carnival-style games.

Norwegian Aura will sail her maiden voyage on May 21, 2027, a seven-night cruise in the Mediterranean. A month later, the ship will arrive in Miami and offer week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

© Rocket Aerial LLC

Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, said the following:

“Norwegian Aura’s float out is a proud and meaningful moment for our entire team. She builds on the legacy of our award-winning Prima Class while taking our commitment to thoughtfully designed guest‑first experiences even further.

“Created in close partnership with Fincantieri, the ship is purposefully constructed to deliver an elevated, multi‑generational vacation experience, with expansive outdoor spaces like Ocean Heights, that bring families and friends together for fun-filled days. With her flexible, open‑air design, Norwegian Aura is exceptionally well suited for Caribbean itineraries, offering the perfect balance of high‑energy fun, relaxation and an effortless escape for guests of all ages.”

Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of Fincantieri’s Merchant Ships Division, added:

“Norwegian Aura’s float out marks a highly symbolic and operationally significant milestone in our shared journey with Norwegian Cruise Line. This vessel reflects the strength of a long-standing partnership and our ability to turn design vision and innovation into tangible solutions, helping to redefine onboard experience for future generations of guests.”

Our yachts allow guests to explore these islands the way they were meant to be discovered — by sea — with the freedom to easily travel between the islands while connecting with the culture, traditions and natural beauty that make this region so special. Because our ships are small and demand for Tahiti is so strong, booking early is the best way for travelers to secure the sailing and stateroom they really want.”
