World’s First Fully Gluten-Free Ocean Cruise To Sail Around British Isles In 2028

Travellers living with coeliac disease will soon be able to enjoy a cruise holiday without worrying about menus, cross-contamination or special meal requests, thanks to what is being billed as the world’s first fully gluten-free ocean voyage.

Specialist operator Celiac Cruise has partnered with Oceania Cruises to charter the 1,200-guest Oceania Vista for a dedicated 12-night sailing around the British Isles in May and June 2028.

During the voyage, every restaurant, café and dining venue onboard will operate entirely gluten-free, creating a unique experience for guests who normally have to carefully manage every meal while travelling.

The cruise departs Southampton on 31st May 2028 and returns on 12th June after visiting destinations across England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

According to organisers, no gluten-containing products will be carried onboard during the sailing, allowing guests to dine freely at any venue without concerns about accidental exposure or cross-contamination.

“With coeliac disease impacting two immediate family members, it brings me great joy on both a personal and professional level that we are able to host the largest-ever completely gluten-free cruise aboard the Oceania Vista, and first-of-its-kind to the British Isles.

“Giving the coeliac and broader gluten-free communities a means to travel completely worry-free and let vacation feel exactly how it’s supposed to – easy – is our entire purpose at Celiac Cruise.”

Maureen Basye, co-founder of Celiac Cruise

The concept aims to eliminate many of the challenges gluten-free travellers regularly face. On most cruises, guests with coeliac disease are required to notify the cruise line in advance, discuss requirements with restaurant staff and often pre-order meals a day ahead.

“On a lot of cruises, you have to pre-order your food the night before,” Basye said. “You have to make a big fuss and talk to the server and maître d’. We want people to be able to go on vacation and not have to constantly be thinking or worrying about their food.”

Cruise line executives say the project highlights growing demand for dedicated travel experiences tailored to specific dietary needs.

“Culinary excellence has been at the heart of Oceania Cruises from day one, and ensuring every guest can experience it fully, regardless of dietary need, is essential to that promise.

“While Oceania Cruises has long offered gluten-free options across our fleet, working with the Celiac Cruise team deepened our understanding of the celiac community and the unmet need for a truly seamless travel experience.”

Nathan Hickman, Chief Sales Officer for Oceania Cruises

A Fully Gluten-Free Culinary Experience

Unlike previous gluten-free charter sailings, which typically featured dedicated dining areas alongside standard cruise dining operations, the 2028 voyage will transform the entire ship into a gluten-free environment.

Guests will have unrestricted access to all 11 dining venues aboard Oceania Vista, including The Grand Dining Room, Italian restaurant Toscana, French venue Jacques, Asian-inspired Red Ginger, steakhouse Polo Grill, Aquamar Kitchen, Terrace Café and Waves Grill.

The cruise operator said every galley will undergo inspection and all food products and labels will be individually reviewed to ensure compliance.

Crew members will also receive specialised training focused on coeliac disease awareness and gluten-free food safety. The programme is delivered in collaboration with the Celiac Disease Foundation, a long-standing partner of Celiac Cruise.

According to organisers, previous guests have often described the experience as emotional, with some becoming overwhelmed at the prospect of walking into a buffet and knowing every item available is safe to eat.

British Isles Itinerary And Pricing

The roundtrip sailing from Southampton includes calls at Cobh and Dublin in Ireland, Liverpool in England, Greenock near Glasgow, Belfast, Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, Invergordon in the Scottish Highlands and Newhaven, the gateway to Edinburgh.

Celiac Cruise is also arranging curated shore excursions with gluten-free options, while selected food-focused experiences ashore will be reviewed by the company’s team.

Fares begin at $7,299 per person for a French Veranda stateroom. The fare includes either Oceania’s House Select Beverage Package or a $600 per cabin shore excursion credit, along with unlimited Starlink WiFi, gratuities, laundry services, speciality coffees, smoothies, gourmet ice cream, fitness classes and in-suite dining.

A range of higher-category accommodation is available, including Concierge Veranda cabins, Penthouse Suites, Oceania Suites, Vista Suites and the ship’s top-tier Owner’s Suites. Solo travellers can also book dedicated Solo Concierge Veranda accommodation.

Founded in 2018 by Basye and travel executive Connie Saunders, Celiac Cruise has steadily expanded its portfolio of dedicated sailings. The company has previously partnered with Royal Caribbean International, AmaWaterways and Oceania Cruises, operating more than 30 cruises designed specifically for the gluten-free community.

The 2028 British Isles voyage represents its most ambitious project to date and could mark a significant milestone for both the cruise industry and travellers living with coeliac disease.
