What To Pack For A Luxury Ocean Voyage From New Zealand

Packing for a luxury ocean voyage from New Zealand isn’t the same as getting ready for an average beach holiday. A typical beach vacation is all about relaxing, whereas on a luxury cruise you’ll likely have relaxing afternoons on deck and elegant themed dinners in the evenings. For that reason, you should choose versatile, comfortable, and appropriate items for each event without overpacking.

A high-end cruise experience departing from New Zealand will likely be heading to warmer destinations such as the South Pacific or Australia, with humid days and cool evenings. Smart packing will help you transition effortlessly through any conditions that cruising brings your way.

So, what items are essential for a luxury cruise from New Zealand? This guide will answer that question and help you pack smartly for this cruise experience.

Essentials for a Luxury Cruise from New Zealand

A luxury ocean voyage departing from New Zealand means tropical shores with plenty of sunshine and humidity, warm days and breezy nights. Here is a checklist of things you should pack to stay comfortable the entire trip:

Fashion & Formalwear

You’ll need clothes for formal nights, as dressing for a luxury cruise night is similar to a cocktail party. Most cruise lines usually plan a theme party and share the details in advance. Choosing timeless and elegant styles will help you shine in the crowd. Here is a list of clothes you should pack:

  • Evening gown or chic cocktail dress for women
  • Tailored suit or tuxedo for men
  • Dress shoes or elegant sandals
  • Statement accessories such as jewellery and belt
  • Clutch or small evening bag
  • Outfit or accessory to match potential theme nights (e.g. tropical print shirt, all-white outfit)
  • Versatile blazer or sleek jacket
  • Multi-functional clothes (e.g. a dress you can wear both day and night)

Smart Casual Options

Consider some casual and comfortable pieces for activities on board or excursions during the day:

  • Polo shirts for a casual look
  • Maxi or midi dresses
  • Casual trousers or capris
  • Lightweight jumper or shawl for air-conditioned spaces
  • Loafers or clean sneakers

Cruise Life Comforts

What to Pack for a Luxury Ocean Voyage from New Zealand 2

Just like any other beach vacation, you’ll need comfortable and stylish clothes for relaxing on the deck. Here is a list of effortless essentials for daytime and pool moments:

  • Lightweight, breathable tops (linen or cotton)
  • Casual shorts or skirts
  • Airy sundresses
  • Swimsuits (at least two)
  • Stylish cover-ups or kaftans
  • Comfortable sandals or flip-flops
  • Walking shoes or sneakers for excursions
  • Sunhat or wide-brimmed hat
  • Polarised sunglasses
  • Light jacket or cardigan for cooler sea breezes or indoor air-conditioned spaces

Entertainment at Sea

A luxury ocean voyage offers a wide range of fun activities, but there may come a time when you just want to relax, enjoy some “me time” and catch up on digital entertainment that you might not usually have time for.

  • E-Reader: Lounge around and read your favourite books, all on one device.
  • Headphones: Enjoy the endless ocean view while listening to your favourite playlists, podcasts, or audiobooks with noise-cancelling headphones.
  • Online gaming excitement: If digital games or online gambling are your thing, this could be a perfect time to enjoy the best casinos online in peace.
  • Phone & charger: You’ll definitely need your phone to capture moments and stay connected, so don’t forget a portable charger to keep you topped up at all times.

Toiletries and Wellness

You’ll probably find basic toiletries and self-care products at the ship’s shops, but it’s still worth packing the ones you actually like using. The goal here is to feel fresh and comfortable without relying on whatever’s available onboard.

  • Skincare and SPF: Long days under the sun can damage your skin and hair, so bring a high-SPF sunscreen (preferably SPF 50), your go-to moisturiser, and something soothing for after-sun care. These little things can make a big difference.
  • Motion sickness remedies: If you’re someone who doesn’t do well with the motion of the sea—or even if you’re not sure whether you do—it’s best to be prepared. Sea bands, tablets, or natural options like ginger can help keep nausea at bay.
  • Personal care in humid weather: Some people like to keep things minimal, while others like a bit more upkeep—especially in humidity. Oil-free skincare and anti-frizz or leave-in conditioner can help you feel more like yourself in the heat.

Bonus Smart Extras

Before you finish packing, don’t forget a couple of key items that’ll make your time on the cruise easier and more enjoyable.

  • Day bag for excursions: A foldable tote or sailing bag is all you need to carry your essentials— your water bottle, sunscreen, camera, or anything else you might need while out exploring.
  • Reusable water bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. It’s a simple way to stay refreshed and do your bit for the environment.
  • Magnetic hooks: These are a cruise hack and lifesavers in your cabin when you’re looking for extra storage to hang hats, bags, and towels.
  • Travel documents + insurance: Make sure you’ve organized all your travel documents, including your passport, visa (if needed), travel insurance, and other details.

Final Thoughts

Although packing for a luxury ocean voyage from New Zealand seems complicated, it’s easy if you pack smartly. Selecting versatile clothing and thoughtful extras will help you be prepared for anything without overstuffing your suitcase.

If your suitcase is already too heavy, make a new checklist. Remember to pack light, but pack right. The goal is to unwind and enjoy every moment of your luxurious vacation while radiating elegantly.

Stop Breaking This Rule When You Board Our Ships

Whether you like rules or not, cruise lines have some rules and regulations set up to ensure a smooth cruise for everyone on board.

Carnival cruise ship Horizon in Miami on embarkation day
Carnival Horizon in Miami. Photo: Cruise Fever

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, posted this week on his company Facebook page about a rule that guests keep breaking on embarkation day. And since he asked everyone share it with at least one person, I figured I’d share it with thousands right here on Cruise Fever.

For anyone who has taken a cruise on a Carnival cruise ship, you know that cabins are still being cleaned and prepared if you board the ship anytime around noon.

The fire doors to cabin hallways are usually closed with a sign that says, “Welcome aboard! Your stateroom steward is adding the finishing touches to your room. Staterooms available from 1:30PM. Please do not enter.”

Staterooms available from 1:30 pm, please do not enter

Unfortunately, not all guests abide by the signs and try to go to their stateroom before it is ready.

John Heald said that he was posting a request, yet again, that all Carnival cruisers should abide by the signs and wait until an announcement is made over the PA system before they go to their cabins.

cabins carnival embarkation day
Photo Carnival’s John Heald posted to remind guests to abide by this one simple rule.

He made the request on behalf of his colleagues on board and for the benefit of cabins stewards and housekeeping staff as they work to prepare the cabins for the arriving guests.

This request differs from one he made a few weeks ago about guests taking naps in cabins before they were ready.

However, if you do want to go to your cabin early and drop off your belongings, there are three exceptions to this rule.

One, Platinum and Diamond guests, the two highest levels in Carnival Cruise Line’s VIFP Club (frequent cruisers), are allowed to ignore this sign.

Two, guests staying in suites can also ignore this sign as their rooms are ready upon arrival.

The third option is for those who do not have a high status and are not staying in a suite. Faster to the Fun (FTTF) is an add-on option that gives cruisers extra VIP perks on their cruise. One of them is being able to drop off your carry-on bags in your stateroom until your room is ready.

The price for FTTF is:

  • 2-3 day cruise: $79.95
  • 4-5 day cruise: $109.95
  • 6-8 day cruise: $149.95 (Excel class $169.95)
  • 9+ day cruises: $209.95

The price is per cabin, not per person.

Heald ended his message by thanking every for abiding by this rule and to share it with at least one person.

Port Canaveral Continues to Set Records and Get New Cruise Ships

Earlier this month at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, I had the opportunity to sit down with Capt. John Murray, CEO of Port Canaveral. We talked about the port’s growth, future, and changes that were recently made to give guests the best possible experience as they start or end their cruise.

Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral has grown over the past few years to be one of the top two busiest cruise ports in the country. They keep seesawing back and forth with PortMiami as the busiest, even though they now have four less berths than Miami.

How has Port Canaveral grown so much over the past 10-15 years? Here is a look at why and reasons you should consider taking a cruise from the port.

New Cruise Ships

A decade ago, if you wanted to sail on the newest cruise ships, you had to head to South Florida. That all changed in 2021 when Carnival Cruise Line began to homeport their first Excel class ship, Mardi Gras, at Port Canaveral.

Last year, Royal Caribbean based a brand new ship there, Utopia of the Seas. This coming August, the cruise line’s newest and largest ship, Star of the Seas, will homeport at Port Canaveral sailing week long cruises to the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas
Utopia of the Seas began sailing from Port Canaveral in 2024 offering three- and four-night cruises to The Bahamas. Photo: Cruise Fever

Other new ships that are sailing from the port this year are Norwegian Aqua and Disney Treasure.

In 2027, two new cruise ships will sail from Port Canaveral. MSC Cruises recently announced that MSC World Atlantic will debut from the port in 2027.

Carnival Festivale will also sail from the port when the ship debuts in 2027. Mardi Gras will move to three- and four-night cruises that depart every Monday and Friday from Port Canaveral.

“We don’t want to be less bad than other ports, we want to be the best” – Capt. Murray

Convenience/Smooth Experience

Since there are no airports within 40 miles of Port Canaveral, it’s mainly a driving port. If are are flying into MCO, were are several shuttle companies that connect it with the cruise port.

85% of all passengers who take a cruise from Port Canaveral drive to the port. The port opened two new parking garages this past year that can accommodate an additional 3,000 cars to park.

The port is just off of I-95 and offers easy in, easy out access. Because they are the first major cruise port on the drive south in Florida, you don’t have to deal with traffic like you do at ports in South Florida.

The port made several operational changes in the past year to elevate the experience at their six cruise terminals. This helps create a smoother experience for guests who are disembarking or embarking on their cruise.

They also now have teams onsite to fix anything that may go wrong during disembarkation and embarkation.

Capt. John Murray said the following:

“A cruise can be destroyed with bad service from the port on the front end or back end. Last thing you want is for someone to have a great trip, get off the ship, and get totally frustrated getting out of the port. We look at ourselves being an extension of that. We don’t want them to have a bad experience at the port.”

Options

Seven major cruise lines offer cruises from Port Canaveral, giving you more options than ever before.  They are:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean

Future of Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral just set their monthly record for cruise guests in March with 925,994 guests. This is 16% higher than last March. They are expecting 8.4 million passenger movements this year, up from 7.6 million in 2024.

Over the next decade, the port is eyeing two locations to build new cruise terminals.  One is between Terminal 1 (Royal Caribbean) and Terminal 3 (Carnival Cruise Line). Terminal 2 is currently used by Victory Casino Cruises and their lease is up in early 2030s.

The port is currently planning on relocating the casino ship when their lease is up and build a new terminal at that location for large cruise ships.

Norwegian Cruise Line is also planning on adding more cruises from Port Canaveral in the future.

Cruise Passenger Beaten Unconscious After Asking Teens to Stop Jumping in Elevator

A Royal Caribbean cruise on Liberty of the Seas turned violent last week, resulting in the arrest of an 18-year-old North Carolina man.  The violent altercation took place after a couple requested that a group of younger passengers stop jumping in the elevator.

Michael White, of Siler City, faces felony charges based on the altercation that left another passenger unconscious.  This happened during the ship’s four-night Bahamas sailing from Port Everglades.

Liberty of the Seas Royal Caribbean Ship from side

Elevator Attack

According to news reports and a policeHome report from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place last Thursday while Liberty of the Seas was at sea. The victim and a female passenger who was also in the elevator reportedly asked a group of young people to stop jumping in the elevator.

Reports say that they had expressed concern that the movement was causing the elevator to sway.  If this movement is too extreme it could cause an elevator to stop operating temporarily, something no one wants to experience on any elevator, never mind one at sea.

The group of youths allegedly replied to the request with verbal threats, shouting profanities at the couple. The situation only got worse when the elevator reached the eighth deck, and the two cruise passengers attempted to leave.

The report states that the group blocked their path, leading the victim to push past them.

“We got to get out of here,” the victim reportedly said.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy Demetrius Williams wrote in the report,

“Once he got out, he said he started getting struck by individuals in the face area, causing him to stagger backward. After staggering backward, he (redacted) fell to the floor and that’s when he started getting kicked.”

Williams stated that the victim blacked out and later woke up in a pool of blood.

Arrest Aftermath

White and an unidentified co-defendant were arrested by BSO deputies on Friday, April 18th, after the ship returned to Fort Lauderdale. Court records indicate that White was released the following day after posting a $5,000 bond.

A judge has issued an order for him to have no contact with the victim. No information regarding the second suspect has been immediately released.

While Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on this specific incident just yet, the cruise line is known to take passenger misconduct seriously.  Incidents like this usually result in lifetime bans from both the cruise line and its sister cruise lines.

Liberty of the Seas continued its scheduled itinerary after the incident, with the majority of passengers unaffected. Michael White’s next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Elevator Lessons

The average cruise passenger on a 7-day sailing spends anywhere from 15-30 minutes in an elevator over the course of a sailing.  While most of these vertical trips range from entertaining to slightly annoying, I always encourage passengers to follow basic cruise ship elevator etiquette.

You can read the 16 rules for avoiding the madness of cruise ship elevators here, but after this horrible story, I may have to add a few more to the list.

Passenger Arrested After Violent Assault Aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise

A Royal Caribbean cruise turned violent last week when a dispute over elevator behaviour escalated into a brutal assault, leaving one passenger unconscious and another in jail, according to court documents and law enforcement.

Liberty of the Seas

Michael White of Siler City, North Carolina, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm following an incident aboard Liberty of the Seas, during a four-night Bahamas itinerary from Port Everglades.

According to a police report from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), the altercation occurred last Thursday while the ship was at sea.

The victim and a female companion had asked a group of juveniles to stop jumping in the elevator, concerned that the motion was causing it to sway dangerously.

The group of youths reportedly became verbally aggressive, shouting, “B—-, who are you talking to?” when confronted.

The situation escalated when the elevator reached the eighth deck and the couple attempted to leave. The report states the group refused to move, prompting the victim to push past them.

“As soon as he exited, he was struck in the face multiple times… He staggered, fell to the floor, and was then kicked repeatedly until he lost consciousness.”

BSO Deputy Demetrius Williams

The victim later awoke in a pool of blood.

White and an unidentified co-defendant were arrested by BSO deputies on Friday, 18th April once the ship returned to Fort Lauderdale.

Court records indicate White was released the following day after posting a $5,000 bond. A judge has ordered that he have no contact with the victim.

No information about the second suspect was immediately available.

Lifetime Ban Presumed

Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on the incident. However, the cruise line is known for taking passenger misconduct seriously.

In recent months, multiple reports have emerged of unruly guest behaviour aboard Royal Caribbean ships, prompting swift action by onboard security teams and, in some cases, permanent bans.

One notable case occurred aboard Navigator of the Seas, when a disruptive guest attempted to break into another passenger’s cabin, assaulting two crew members in the process.

He was subdued using pepper spray and restraints by ship security.

Cruise industry experts note that while rare, incidents of violence can and do occur aboard large vessels, which are essentially floating cities.

Security teams onboard are trained to respond to such situations swiftly, often in collaboration with federal authorities upon return to port.

As for the Liberty of the Seas, the ship completed its scheduled itinerary despite the mid-voyage disturbance, with the majority of guests unaffected by the isolated event.

White’s next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Oceania Cruises’ Owners – And How You Can Invest In Them For Free Money Every Time You Cruise

Many of the big cruise lines around the world are owned by a larger group – but Oceania’s owners surprise me a little.

a couple taking a photo on their phone in front of an Oceania cruise ship

Or rather, I was surprised by the other cruise lines that the parent group owns alongside Oceania – though, when you think it through, it does make sense.

I’ll tell you why, and I’ll also tell you why it’s useful to know about the ownership structure – because you could benefit every time you cruise, if you become an investor…

Oceania’s Owner Group

Oceania Cruises is owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings (NCLH), a holding company that was incorporated in 2011 when the cruise line NCL was first publicly listed. Oceania was bought by NCLH three years later, in 2014.

At least, that’s the company that manages Oceania Cruises. In terms of who owns Oceania cruise line, that’s the shareholders. And so technically, the main owner is The Vanguard Group, an investment company that owns over 10% of the shares in NCLH.

The net worth of NCLH as of April 2025 is $11.87 billion. It’s roughly doubled since September 2022.

NCLH owns three cruise lines – unsurprisingly, based on the name, their flagship brand is Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). But alongside NCL and Oceania, they also own Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

You might be surprised that the owners of Oceania Cruises also own another luxury cruise brand and that they own the young, innovation-driven NCL brand too. But this means they have a wide cruise demographic covered.

NCL is better suited to families and young couples looking for a mainstream cruise experience. And both Oceania and RSSC offer different types of luxury cruising.

Oceania Cruises is considered to be premium luxury brand, while Regent Seven Seas Cruises is ‘ultra-luxury’, offering a much more refined service (and at a much higher price point too).

Oceania also has a reputation for being ‘all about the food’, while Regent is more service-oriented.

Oceania Cruises CEO

The President and CEO of Oceania Cruises is Jason Montague, who took over in February 2025. Prior to that it was Frank Del Rio, who was previously the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of the cruise line, and has held various roles at the cruise line previously – he was one of the first employees of the company in 2003.

Del Rio only took over as CEO in January 2023 when previous CEO Howard Sherman left the role. Sherman is still with NCLH in an advisory role.

HQ and Ship Registration

Oceania Cruises is registered and headquartered in Miami, Florida. However, the fleet of ships is all registered in the Marshall Islands, in order to get around US tax and labour laws for crew working on the ships.

The address of the Oceania Cruises headquarters is 7665 Corporate Center Drive, Miami, Florida 33126. The phone number for the corporate headquarters is +1 844-879-2230.

Oceania Cruises History

Oceania Cruises is a relatively new cruise line when compared to many others, having only been founded in 2002.

Oceania Cruises was founded by Frank Del Rio in 2002, intending to fill a gap in the market for premium cruising that wasn’t exceptionally expensive. The cruise line was sold to Apollo Management in 2007 for $850 million, with Del Rio kept on.

Apollo later bought Regent Seven Seas Cruises and created a parent company for the two brands, Prestige Cruise Holdings.

Oceania Fleet History

Oceania Cruises didn’t begin with brand new ships – instead, it chartered ships from a company called Cruiseinvest and renamed them. The fleet began with Regatta and was joined in 2004 by Insignia.

Oceania Regatta cruise ship sailing

In 2005 another R-class ship was launched, named Nautica.

Oceania then decided to purpose-build two new ships for the fleet. These O-Class ships are over twice the size of their R-Class vessels. Marina was the first to launch, in 2011, before being joined by her sister Riviera a year later.

The most recent addition to the fleet has been a the new Allura class ship, Vista, in 2023. Sister ship Allura joins in July 2025, and two more ships are being build for a new larger class, set for delivery in 2027 and 2029.

Acquisition By NCLH

In September 2014, NCLH announced that it had acquired outright Prestige Cruise Holdings and was now the owner of both Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The deal cost just over $3 billion.

The cruise line continues to grow and a new Allura Class of ships are now on order, with two ships due to launch in the coming years.

Oceania Stock & Investment Perks

Oceania Cruises does not have stock, but the parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings does. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under NCLH and anyone can invest in the company if they want to.

If you want to become a shareholder in Oceania Cruises, you’d need to instead buy NCLH stock. And if you buy 100 shares or more, then you’re entitled to a shareholder benefit every time you cruise with Oceania Cruises.

NCLH shareholder benefits on Oceania Cruises:

  • $250 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings of 15 days or more
  • $100 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings from 7 to 14 days
  • $50 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings of 6 days or fewer

In order to claim your onboard credit, you need to request it in advance of your sailing – otherwise, you won’t get it. You’ll need to provide proof of your share ownership as well.

But the good news is that you can enjoy this benefit on every cruise you take with Oceania – and on any NCL or Regent cruises you book too. Owning NCLH stock makes you a shareholder in all three cruise lines, essentially.

Read more: NCL Shareholder Benefits Explained

How To Buy Oceania Cruises Shares

To buy shares in Oceania Cruises you’ll need to work with a stockbroker to purchase NCLH stock. This can be done with a person qualified to be a stockbroker, or you can do it independently using a stockbroker trading platform online or via your smartphone.

If you are convinced that you want to buy NCLH stock then it makes sense to use an online platform, since fees will usually be lower. Working with a human stockbroker is recommended when you want official advice on whether a stock is good to buy, so their services cost a little more.

I personally chose to buy my NCLH shares through an investing platform called etoro. I chose this one because it is one of the most popular platforms with 20 million registered users and has great reviews and low fees.

I’ve been very happy with my share-buying experience and found it really easy to do.

(eToro is a multi-asset investment platform. The value of your investments may go up or down. Your capital is at risk.)

Read more: Should you invest in Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings?

To Conclude

It makes sense for a cruise corporation to have brands that serve different audiences, which is why NCLH owning a mainstream cruise line (NCL), a premium cruise line (Oceania) and an ultra-luxury one (Regent) makes sense. If they bought a river cruise line then you could argue they had the complete set.

Of course, you could become a part-owner of the cruise line if you decided to invest, and you’d get onboard credit for every cruise. Think carefully before you do make any decisions though, as any stocks and shares trading comes with a risk – there’s no guarantee you’d get your money back if things go south.

Royal Caribbean’s Owners & The Perks You Can Enjoy As A Result

Did you know that there are two “Royal Caribbean” companies?

It can be a bit confusing once you start looking into the owners of Royal Caribbean, especially if you’re looking for stock-buying reasons (and the perks you get from that).

Odyssey of the Seas

Don’t worry – despite the same name, it’s not actually that confusing. Plus, it’s worth understanding it as the benefits to being a stockholder are very good if you cruise often!

Royal Caribbean’s Owner Is Royal Caribbean… Sort Of

Royal Caribbean International, the cruise line, is owned by the Royal Caribbean Group. The Royal Caribbean headquarters are based in Miami although the company is incorporated in Liberia.

The cruise line came first, and the group was created when the cruise line purchased Celebrity Cruises in 1997, at which point the cruise line was rebranded Royal Caribbean International and the group was named Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, before later changing its name to Royal Caribbean Group to offer a clearer distinction.

Royal Caribbean’s Majority Owners

The company with the most shares in the Royal Caribbean Group is Capital Research & Management, a large investment group that has existed since 1931 and currently has over $2.6 trillion in assets across its entire portfolio. They’re estimated to own around 25% of the company.

That’s split between multiple different branches of the same group, with the primary one being Capital Research & Management Co (International Investors). The rest of the top 10 shareholders also consists of major investment groups, including The Vanguard Group, JPMorgan and others.

Royal Caribbean CEOs

The CEO and President of Royal Caribbean International is Michael Bayley while his boss, the President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, is Jason Liberty. Michael Bayley is originally from the UK and he studied Business at the University of Bournemouth.

While the original Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was founded by three Norwegian cruise lines, the group was later listed on the New York Stock Exchange before forming the Royal Caribbean Group, which was incorporated in Liberia.

This was done to avoid having to pay the full amount of US taxes and follow the wage and labour laws of the country. It’s the same reason many cruise lines register their ships in countries such as the Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean History

Let’s take a quick look at the history of Royal Caribbean…

Founders

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line was originally founded by three Norweigan shipping companies – Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, I.M. Skaugen & Company, and Gotaas Larsen – in 1968. Two years later the first ship, Song of Norway, entered service.

Numerous ships were launched over the next 20 years until the cruise line launched the first ‘of the Seas’ ship – Sovereign of the Seas, at the time the largest cruise ship in the world.

Royal Caribbean also merged with Admiral Cruises in the same year.

In 1993, after launching two more Sovereign-class ships, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange and grew rapidly, building its new headquarters in Miami.

Acquisitions and Rebranding

1997 was the year that Royal Caribbean acquired the Greek premium cruise line Celebrity Cruises. To keep the brands separate, the cruise line was renamed Royal Caribbean International while the parent company became Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, and later, Royal Caribbean Group.

There have been other Royal Caribbean Group subsidiaries since this date, and currently, the group owns three cruise lines outright – Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

The company did own Azamara but sold the brand in 2020, and it has sold 50% of TUI Cruises too.

Oasis Class

A defining year for Royal Caribbean was 2009 when it launched the first Oasis-class ship, at the time the largest class of ship in the world. While it’s now been surpassed by the Icon-class, it was the Oasis Class that helped make the cruise line one of the most popular in the world.

Royal Caribbean Net Worth

The cruise line Royal Caribbean International does not have a net worth listed but the Royal Caribbean Group has a total net worth of $55 billion as of April 2025. This puts it at around double the net worth of the Carnival Corporation & plc.

Royal Caribbean Stock Explained

Royal Caribbean International does not have stock, but the senior company Royal Caribbean Group does, listed as RCL on the New York Stock Exchange. At the time of writing, they are one of the highest valued cruise line stocks that you can invest in.

If you do decide to invest in Royal Caribbean Group and you buy 100 or more shares, you will be entitled to shareholder benefits when you next sail on a Royal Caribbean ship (or on a Celebrity Cruises or Silversea Cruises ship).

Royal Caribbean shareholder benefits:

  • $250 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings of 14 nights or more
  • $100 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings from 6 to 13 nights
  • $50 onboard credit to spend per stateroom on sailings of 5 nights or fewer

In order to claim your credit, you need to apply through the cruise line’s website and provide proof of your share ownership.

How To Buy Royal Caribbean Shares

You can buy Royal Caribbean shares by using a stockbroker. This could be a person licensed to act as a stockbroker, or a platform either on your laptop or via your smartphone. You’ll need to find one that deals in the NYSE and request to purchase RCL stock.

Working with a stockbroker in person normally costs more, but as part of that, they will offer you their expert advice. This tends to be better for people who don’t know what they want to invest in, although they might be able to discuss the pros and cons of RCL stock with you.

But if you’re certain that you just want to buy RCL stock, and you understand the risks involved, then an online stockbroker platform will likely work out to be much cheaper.

I can’t advise you which is the best, but I personally chose to buy my Royal Caribbean shares through an online investing platform called etoro. I chose this one because it is one of the most popular platforms with 20 million registered users and has great reviews and low fees.

I’ve been very happy with my share-buying experience and found it really easy to do.

To Conclude

It can be a little tricky to remember, but Royal Caribbean International is the cruise line, and Royal Caribbean Group is the parent company – the word ‘Group’ is the one you need to focus on here.

The parent company is massive, and you can be a part of that if you want to buy your own shares and you’re happy to risk your own investment – they don’t come cheap though.

But you could be a part-owner of the company, and enjoy free onboard credit with every sailing if your investment allows you to afford 100 shares or more. Just make sure you understand the risks of buying stocks and shares first.

The Giant Corporation Behind Princess Cruises

Many of the world’s biggest cruise lines are actually part of the same larger corporation – and if you’re savvy, you can profit from this.

It’s the same with Princess Cruises. If you want to buy stocks in Princess Cruises, you’re actually buying stocks in the group, and that means perks on every cruise line in that company…

Discovery Princess

So, who owns Princess now, and how could that benefit you?

Princess Cruises’ Owners

Princess Cruises is an American cruise line that is owned by the Carnival Corporation & plc. As part of the Carnival Corporation, it is under the Holland America Group umbrella that consists of Princess Cruises, Seabourn, P&O Cruises Australia and Holland America Line.

Princess Cruises has been a part of the Carnival Corporation since 2003. It has its own subsidiary company as well – Princess Tours, a rail service that runs sightseeing tours in Alaska.

The Cruise Line’s President

Princess Cruises does not have a CEO. It has a President instead – Gus Antorcha. He was previously the President of Holland America Line.

Gus Antorcha

Antorcha reports into Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation.

Princess Cruises History

Let’s take a look at how Princess Cruises came to be…

Origins – 1965 to 1974

Princess Cruises was first founded in 1965 by Stanley McDonald, who chartered the Princess Patricia ship to run Mexican Riviera cruises out of Los Angeles.

A lack of air-conditioning meant that the ship was not well suited to the route, and so the purpose-built ship, Italia, soon took over. In 1973 the Italia returned to Costa Cruise Line, and Princess took on a charter for an ocean liner called Carla C.

As Part of P&O – 1974 to 2000

In 1974, Britain’s Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) acquired Princess Cruise Lines and gave the line its first ship to own – the Spirit of London, which was renamed as the first Sun Princess.

Over the next 25 years, the cruise line expanded and the Pacific Princess became the host of the famous TV show The Love Boat, starring Lauren Tewes as Julie McCoy.

In 1988, P&O acquired the Italian cruise line, Sitmar Line, and transferred almost all of the ships to the Princess brand.

Throughout the 90s, the fleet modernised as Princess Cruises launched brand new ships and transferred older ones to P&O Cruises Australia. In 1998, the Grand Princess was launched, the world’s biggest cruise ship at the time.

As Part of P&O Princess Cruises – 2000 to 2003

In 2000, P&O created a spin-off company for its passenger division, named P&O Princess Cruises. The Pacific Princess then left the fleet in 2002, the last of the original fleet to leave.

New ships were built in the Coral Class, which were built to be the maximum size able to sail the Panama Canal.

As Part of the Carnival Corporation & Plc – 2003 Onwards

In 2003, a $5.4 billion merger saw P&O Princess Cruises join with the Carnival Corporation, becoming the Carnival Corporation & plc. The company is dual-listed in both the US and the UK.

Sub-companies were created – Carnival UK owns Cunard Line and P&O Cruises, while the Holland America Group was created to include Princess Cruises, HAL and other brands.

Princess Cruises Net Worth

As it is a part of the wider Carnival Corporation & plc, Princess Cruises does not have a net worth published. However, the net worth of Carnival Corporation & plc is estimated to be around $20.99 billion as of April 2025.

Princess Cruises Shares Explained

Princess Cruises doesn’t have its own stock – as part of the Carnival Corporation & plc, you would need to buy stock in the group. Carnival Corporation & plc stock is dual-listed on both the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

The listing in New York is available as common stock under the symbol CCL for the Carnival Corporation, and as an ADS under the symbol CUK for Carnival plc. The London listing is for Carnival plc under the symbol CCL – a little confusing, I’ll admit.

How To Buy Princess Cruises Shares

If you want to buy shares in Princess Cruises, you’ll need to instead buy Carnival Corporation stock. You can do this with the help of a stockbroker – either a platform or a person – that will facilitate the purchase for you.

There are two types of stockbroker – full service and online/discount. If you know you just want to invest in Princess Cruises then you only need an online/discount stockbroker, since you aren’t looking for the advice and expertise that a full-service stockbroker would provide.

There are many brokerage platforms available online, but do your research into them first and check the reviews to make sure you’re using a reputable company.

I can’t advise you which is the best, but I personally chose to buy my Carnival shares through an investing platform called etoro. I chose this one because it is one of the most popular platforms with 20 million registered users and has great reviews and low fees.

I’ve been very happy with my share-buying experience and found it really easy to do.

If you own a minimum of 100 shares in Carnival Corporation, you will enjoy free onboard credit for every sailing on Princess Cruises (and on any of the other cruise lines as part of the group including P&O Cruises and Cunard).

You’ll get $250 for sailings of 14 days or more, $100 for sailings of 7 to 13 days, and $50 for sailings of 6 days or less on sailings out of the US. On UK sailings, you get £ equivalents. You can check the exact amounts and see how to claim in my guide here: Princess Cruise Stock Benefits Explained.

Ibought 100 shares in Carnival Corporation for less than $1000. I expect to make this back from the onboard credit over the coming years and hope that the shares will increase in value too.

The share price was much higher prior to 2020 though, when 100 shares in Carnival Corporation would have cost over $5,000.

Since I mentioned the benefits of buying Carnival shares in my weekly email, I’ve had lots of people email me to say that they’ve also bought shares and are happy to receive the free onboard credit. Like this one…

“We took your advice and bought 100 Carnival shares which cost £550. Two Cunard trips gave us £250 each extra onboard spend and another gave us $200 (£175) total £675, also the shares have gone up £175. Best investment I’ve ever made, thankyou, keep up the good work.”

To Conclude

Princess Cruises is a well-established cruise line and a very important part of Carnival Corporation & plc, being the biggest revenue earner for the group. Its long history has seen it grow from strength to strength and it is now part of the largest cruise company in the world.

And it has enjoyed some notable moments too, including being the host of the famous TV show The Love Boat, and at one point owning the largest cruise ship in the world.

In terms of who owns Princess cruise lines, technically you could, if you bought CCL stock.

If you did want to invest then you would enjoy benefits every time you sailed on Princess Cruises, but also if you wanted to sail with Carnival, Seabourn, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises UK, P&O Cruises Australia, Cunard, Costa Cruises or AIDA Cruises.

Of course, investing in any business is a risk so always be aware of that – you might not get your money back. So make sure you only invest what you can afford to lose if things do go south.
