When you’re excited about your cruise, one of the questions you’ll want to know is, how soon can you get on the ship? After all, if you can embark before lunch you’ll enjoy an extra meal and half a day of extra cruise time compared to if you embark in the later afternoon.
I love embarking early on a cruise as it makes the first day so much more relaxing. You can take your time to find your muster station, unpack and even have a dip in a whirlpool to get your cruise off to a fun start.
But what time can you actually get on a Princess cruise ship? And how can you be among the first people to board?
You can (sometimes) board from 11!
The earliest that you can board a Princess cruise is typically 11 am, though if you have priority boarding, then you may be able to board as early as 10 am and go straight to the front of the queue in the port.
The boarding time can also vary depending on whether the prior cruise docked on time, and everyone else left the ship when they should.

How to get priority boarding
Certain groups of guests get priority boarding on Princess cruises. These are:
Platinum or Elite Captain’s Circle Members: Guests who have completed five cruises or 50 cruise days
Suite Guests: Those staying in a full suite (not a mini-suite)
Guests With Special Needs: Those with medical issues or using mobility aids
There used to be a Bon Voyage Experience where guests could pay an extra charge to board early and enjoy a four-course lunch, ship tour and photo, but that service has been discontinued.
No more need to select an arrival time!
It used to be that, to board a Princess cruise, you needed to book an arrival time. The earlier slots always went very quickly too, so if you weren’t on it, you could end up being last on the ship!
But Princess decided to get rid of that in 2023 and now it’s essentially a free-for-all, except for those people who get priority boarding and can skip the wait.
It’s not actually chaotic, but if you do show up earlier, you’ll probably find that the lines are longer, though it’ll depend on the port and whether more people are likely to be getting the coach, or flying in – if you’re there at 11, you might beat the bigger crowds!
If you are staying in a hotel near the port on the night before your cruise, you can make sure you’re one of the first people on the ship. Just remember that if you do turn up at 11 am or even sooner to queue, you might still be waiting a while, especially if the ship isn’t ready.
Blue lanes and green lanes explained
When you arrive at the port, there’ll be a couple of different lanes that you can use.
The blue lane is if you still need help with check-in, but you can skip that and have a much faster experience if you use the Princess Cruises app on your phone.
If you do all the check-in admin on the app before you reach the port, you can use the green lane, and you’ll get on the ship faster.
US passengers can only use the green lane if they’ve had the Medallion shipped to their home already. If you’ve done all the admin but need to pick up your Medallion, it’s the blue lane you need.
In the UK, nobody gets their Medallion shipped to them, so the green lane is for picking up the Medallion once the check-in stuff on the app is sorted.
There is a third lane too, which is an accessibility lane for anyone who needs help with mobility or other accessibility needs. If that’s you, you shouldn’t have to worry about being forced into a queue where you need to stand for a long time.
Don’t be late!
It’s really important that you make sure you know the check-in times for your ship. The all-aboard time is around one hour before the ship’s departure time. If you miss this, you won’t be allowed to board the ship, even if it hasn’t yet left port.
This is because the ship’s crew have some admin to do once all the passengers are on board before departure and must submit a manifest detailing the names of everyone on board to the port authority.
The ship will bar you from entering, and also, they won’t refund you because it’ll be your fault. Even if someone else makes you late, the cruise line will tell you that you should’ve planned extra time. So you’ll be watching the ship sail away without you, knowing you’ve lost the money (and insurance might not cover it too).
Don’t be late! It’s always best to travel the day before if you’ve got a long journey to make to get to port.

MSC Cruises offers three different ‘experiences’ which are named Bella, Fantastica and Aurea. Each has different benefits and a different price, so you can decide whether you want a budget-friendly cruise, or to pay a little more for lots of added extras.

MSC Bella Experience
MSC Cruises’ Bella experience is the standard cruise package with no extra cost. You’ll get everything that you would expect on a cruise – accommodation, meals, entertainment and use of the kids’ clubs and leisure facilities.
The Bella experience includes the following…
Accommodation
With the Bella experience, you don’t get to choose your cabin, and it’ll be located somewhere in the less-desirable areas of the ship such as right at the front, right at the back or somewhere noisy like right above the nightclub.
If you choose a Bella balcony cabin, it may have a metal rail rather than glass, which means that you would have to stand up to enjoy the view. Bella balcony cabins sometimes have obstructed views or they may be in locations that are prone to being windy or shaded.
As you can see from the following photo, the Bella balconies have metal fronts, so if you have kids aged about six or under, they won’t be able to see out. This could make it more tempting for them to climb on furniture, so I’d avoid these balconies with young kids.
That said, not all Bella cabins are bad, some of them are actually just as good as Fantastica cabins. So check the deck plan before you decide.
If you want to change your Bella stateroom or your booking, you’ll be charged an admin fee.
When I stayed in this inside cabin we had the Bella experience
Food and drink
With MSC Cruises’ Bella experience, you’ll be able to dine in the buffet or one of the main dining rooms at no charge, as well as having the option to eat in the speciality restaurants for an extra fee if you wish.
You can submit a preference for an early or late sitting, but there’s no guarantee that your request will be met as the first choices are given to guests who have booked the Fantastica or Aurea packages.
You’ll also be able to book a drinks package with a discount when you book your cruise. If you don’t book it when you book the cruise, you won’t get the discount.
Activities
With the Bella experience, you’ll be able to use the ship’s pools, gym, sports facilities and see shows in the theatre at no charge. Your children can attend sessions in the kids club each day for no extra cost.
Loyalty points
Whichever experience you choose, you’ll earn MSC Voyagers Club points which will give you discounts and perks on future cruises.
Not available with suites…
You can select the Bella experience when you book any Interior, Ocean View or Balcony Cabin. You can’t select the Bella experience if you want to stay in a Suite.
MSC Fantastica Experience
The Fantastica experience is an upgrade to MSC Cruises’ standard package. For an extra cost, you’ll enjoy a range of perks such as a cabin in a better location, the first choice of dinner sittings and more flexible booking terms.
The Fantastica experience includes…
Accommodation
When you upgrade to the Fantastica experience, you get to choose your own cabin, and you’ll have more choices of where to book your room, but you still won’t be able to select from the most desirable areas of the ship – that’s reserved for Aurea.
The wider choice of accommodation means that you may have the option of a sofa bed for kids, rather than a Pullman bed.
Our Fantastica Balcony Room on MSC Virtuosa with sofa bed
If you make the wrong choice with your cabin, you’ll be able to change it for free. If MSC Cruises have to change your cabin number for operational reasons, they will give you an upgrade.
If you wish to change your cruise dates or destination, you’ll be able to do this once for free. However, you’ll need to do it at least one month before departure and the new date must be within three months of the original. You should also note that it doesn’t state that you’re allowed to change the ship, just the date and destination.
Food and drink
As well as dining in the buffet and main restaurants, if you choose MSC Cruises’ Fantastica experience you can also enjoy breakfast delivered to your cabin at no charge.
For a little while they did remove this benefit, but now it’s back.
If you choose the Fantastica experience, you’re allowed to request your preferred dining time, but it’s subject to availability. So you aren’t guaranteed it still.
And in 2022, another benefit was added for Fantastica guests so they now also get a 20% discount on a dedicated speciality restaurant pre-paid package.
Activities
Just the same as the Bella experience, you’ll be able to use the ship’s pools, gym, sports facilities and see shows in the theatre at no charge. There are no longer any extra activities like cooking classes and foreign language classes for kids staying in Fantastica accommodation.
Services
Last year, a photographer would circle around the main dining room on Mediterranean Night taking photos and you could collect a printed photo for free from the photo counter. This is no longer a perk for Fantastica guests so if you do want any photos, you’ll have to pay for them.
Loyalty points
Whichever experience you choose, you’ll earn MSC Voyagers Club points which will give you discounts and perks on future cruises.
Fantastica’s available with any cabin type
You can upgrade to the Fantastica experience when you book any cabin type, including Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite.
Bella Vs Fantastica – what’s the difference?
When you upgrade from Bella to Fantastica you will get:
Choice of cabin location
Free room service at breakfast time
Choice of dinner sittings (subject to availability)
Opportunity to change your cabin, cruise date or destination for free
The Aurea experience is MSC Cruises’ top package. For an extra cost, you’ll enjoy benefits like access to exclusive areas of the ship, priority boarding and discounted spa treatments. However, MSC Cruises no longer offers free drinks for Aurea guests.
The Aurea experience includes…
Accommodation
One of the main MSC Aurea benefits is that it lets you choose from the best locations for Balcony cabins and Suites. You’ll also get a bathrobe and slippers in your cabin, and a pillow menu so you can get the best night’s sleep.
Food and drink
In previous years, the main benefit of the Aurea package is that you would get a free Easy drink package. This would entitle you to free draught beer, house wines, selected spirits and cocktails, soft drinks, fruit juices, bottled water and classic hot drinks.
You also get a ‘welcome package’ with prosecco and chocolates in your room on departure day.
The MSC Aurea experience also gives you the option to enjoy My Choice dining in a dedicated restaurant or area as well as a 20% discount on a prepaid speciality dining package. Plus you get free delivery on room service 24 hours a day, but you need to pay for the actual things you order (except for breakfast, which like Fantastica is free).
Activities
The Aurea experience gives adults access to an exclusive sundeck on your ship. You’ll also get a Wellbeing package which includes access to the Thermal Area of the spa throughout your cruise where you can visit the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.
From 2022, Aurea guests will no longer receive the free ‘Well Being Package’. This did include a welcome cocktail in the spa, a private MediSpa doctor consultation, a 50-minute massage and a tanning booth session. Instead, you’ll now get a 40% discount on a dedicated spa prepaid package or a 10% discount on any other spa treatments.
Services
Aurea guests get priority boarding on embarkation day with luggage drop off. There’s no VIP line at guest services or any other priority treatment during your cruise.
Loyalty points
Whichever experience you choose, you’ll earn MSC Voyagers Club points which will give you discounts and perks on future cruises.

Only available in the best rooms…
The MSC Aurea experience is only available for guests staying in Balcony cabins or Suites. If you want an Interior or Ocean View cabin, then you will have to choose either a Bella or Fantastica experience.

Fantastica Vs Aurea – what’s the difference?
When you upgrade from Fantastica to Aurea you will get:
Choice of the best Balcony cabins and Suites
Welcome prosecco and chocolates
Pillow menu
Dining in a dedicated restaurant or area at flexible times
Access to Thermal Area of the spa and the Top Exclusive Solarium
Which MSC experience is best depends on how much value you place on each of the added extras and the cost of the upgrade.
The price to upgrade from Bella to Fantastica or Aurea varies from cruise to cruise and can also change over time. It also depends on the cabin type, so you might find that upgrading to Fantastica could cost £140 extra for an Inside cabin, but only £30 extra for an Ocean View cabin, as an example.
The price of upgraded experiences is payable per person, but it usually only applies to the adults in your cabin.
Are the Fantastica or Aurea Experiences Worth It?
On a seven-night cruise, let’s say that the Fantastica experience costs £50 per person extra and the Aurea experience costs around £100 per person extra (the actual prices may be different on your cruise)
So, you would need to look at the perks and decide if they are worth it for you…
MSC Fantastica perks:
Choice of cabin locations
Free room service at breakfast
Choice of dinner sittings (subject to availability)
20% discount on a prepaid speciality dining package
Flexibility to change your room, cruise date or destination
MSC Aurea perks:
All of the Fantastica perks
Welcome prosecco and chocolates
Pillow menu
Dining in a special area with flexible times
Access to Thermal Area of the spa and Top Exclusive Solarium
Discounted spa treatments
Priority boarding
MSC Cruises Perks That You Can No Longer Get (Removed in 2022)
Free drink package for Aurea guests
Free tanning booth and cocktail for Aurea guests
Free delivery of room service outside of breakfast time
Extra activities for kids
ZOE virtual assistant
Free photo
Here’s when you should upgrade
The Fantastica package can be worth it…
1. If you’re not happy with the choice of Bella cabins
Take a look at the cabins you’re offered with Bella. If you don’t like any of them, you should probably consider upgrading to Fantastica for more choice.
2. If your dining time is important
On MSC Cruises, the second dinner sitting usually starts at around 8.30 pm, meaning that your meal is unlikely to be finished until well after 10 pm, possibly as late as 11 pm. If you’re cruising with kids, you’re unlikely to find this to be acceptable.
While you can speak to the maître d on the first evening and request an earlier dining time, there’s no guarantee that they’ll be able to do this for you, even if you have young kids.
Choose Aurea if…
1. You hate fighting for sunloungers
On some MSC Cruises ships, you’ll find that other guests reserve sun loungers with towels all day. Which means that there aren’t enough loungers for everyone else. If you have access to the exclusive sun deck for Aurea guests, this should be less of an issue.
It’s important to note though, that kids aren’t allowed in the spa or the private sundeck. If you have kids with you, you’ll only be able to use these areas when your little ones are in the kids’ club. You need to be child-free to really make the most of the Aurea experience.
2. You like to dine at different times each day
One day you might like to dine at 6 pm right after your excursion, another you might like to lay in the sun until 8 pm, get ready for an hour and then eat at 9p m. The Aurea package allows you to do this with the flexible dining option.

To conclude
If you’re cruising on a budget, the Bella experience will be the best one for you. However, depending on your circumstances and the cost, it might be worth upgrading to Fantastica or Aurea.
If you’ve not cruised with MSC Cruises before, I’d recommend that you read my next article ‘Why Are MSC Cruises So Cheap?‘ to get an understanding of how MSC Cruises compares to other, more expensive cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and P&O Cruises.
If you want special treatment on your cruise above and beyond what you get from Aurea, I recommend that you look into the MSC Yacht Club instead.

Princess Cruises’ Suites comes with a whole host of VIP benefits. And, the better the Suite you choose, the more free perks you’ll get.
Choosing the best Suite or Mini-Suite for you is a decision that you won’t want to get wrong. So in this guide, I’ll show you what you can expect when you book each of the different accommodation types on Princess Cruises ships.
First, you need to know the different suite types
There are five different suite types on Princess Cruise ships:
Mini-Suites
Club Class Mini-Suites
Cabana Mini-Suites
Suites
Two Bedroom Family Suites
Sky Suites
Mini-Suites
Mini-Suites are the next level of accommodation up from a balcony room and they feature a separate sitting area – ideal for people who like a little more space.
A Princess Mini Suite is substantially larger than balcony rooms but, as the name suggests, not as large as a full Suite.
Mini-Suite
Club Class Mini-Suites
The best Mini-Suites on Princess Cruises ships are Club Class Mini-Suites. These are located in the best spots in the middle of each ship and come with a selection of extra perks like Club Class Dining, priority boarding and free wine on embarkation day.
You can learn more about the Princess Club Class perks later in this guide.
Cabana Mini-Suites
Introduced on the new Sphere-class ships for Princess Cruises, Cabana Mini-Suites offer their own private cabana – an indoor/outdoor area between the main Mini Suite and the balcony.
You get the same Princess suite benefits as a regular Mini-Suite, but with access to the Cabana Deck on the ship too, which is a private area for Cabana guests.
Suites
On Princess Cruises ships, Suites come with all the amenities of Club Class Mini-Suites and a few more as well. You’ll enjoy considerably more space and extra freebies like laundry, a mini-bar setup and speciality dining on the first night.
Full Suite
Sky Suites
Sky Suites are only available on the newest ships – Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess, along with the Sphere-class ships like Sun Princess (where they are called Signature Sky Suites)
They are absolutely huge, with a 1,000-square-foot balcony offering 270-degree views. You’ll be looked after by a Suite Experience Manager are will receive lots of free perks like access to The Enclave spa, VIP seats in the theatre and meals served on your balcony if you wish.
Two Bedroom Family Suites
A Two Bedroom Family Suite is essentially a regular Mini-Suite that’s connected to an Inside Stateroom via a shared lounge.
They are only available on certain ships – Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Diamond Princess, Emerald Princess, Grand Princess, Ruby Princess and Sapphire Princess. These suites sleep up to eight people on most ships, but only six people on Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess.
To help you avoid these worst cabins on Princess Cruises, I’ve created a cabin checklist that you can get for free. Just enter your email address below and you’ll receive it in your inbox straight away.

So many benefits! Let’s learn more…
The VIP perks and amenities you can expect differ across the different Princess Suites. The most expensive suites, Sky Suites, are extremely spacious and feature lots of facilities and extra services. The cheapest Mini-Suites, however, are just a small upgrade from a balcony room.
Here’s what you can expect at each level…
1. Separate sitting area
On Princess Cruises, what sets a Mini-Suite or Suite aside from a Balcony room is the separate sitting area. And the larger your suite, the larger and more distinct this area is.
With a Mini-Suite, you’ll get a sofa bed and coffee table, whereas, in a Full Suite the seating area features a sofa bed, chair and two tables.
The living area in Princess Cruises’ Sky Suites is the most spacious with a sofa bed, side table, lounge chair, coffee table and a large dining table that seats four.
2. Bathtub
One of the perks of a Suite or Mini-Suite on a Princess cruise is that you get a bathtub rather than just a stand-up shower. This is ideal for families with young children or those who like to soak in the tub.
Mini-Suite Bathroom
In Club Class Mini-Suites and Suites, you’ll also get upgraded toiletries, although the standard toiletries are very nice anyway.
Sky Suites feature two bathrooms – one with a bathtub and separate rain shower and another with a shower. The toiletries and towels are extra special too.
3. Larger balcony
Princess Cruises Suites generally have larger balconies than standard Balcony cabins. These increase in size as you upgrade through the different suite types. Princess Cruises’ Sky Suites have the largest balconies at sea.
Sky Suite Balcony
The Sky Suite balcony is so large that it’s impossible to fit it all into one photo. While it is very large, it doesn’t have a jacuzzi on the balcony as you might expect if you’re used to cruising with other cruise lines such as Carnival.
Approximate balcony sizes on Princess Cruises ships:
Balcony Room – 40 sq. ft.
Mini-Suite – 40 sq. ft.
Suite – 70 to 210 sq. ft.
Sky Suite /Sky Signature Suite – 947 to 1012 sq. ft.
Mini-Suites have floor-to-ceiling glass doors, while full Suites have two sets of sliding glass doors and Sky Suites have three, as well as a window onto the balcony.
One thing to be aware of though, is that not every suite has a balcony. Some Suites, known as Window Suites, have a large window instead. If you value a balcony, you’ll want to avoid these. However, if you’re travelling with young children or a vulnerable person, the lack of a balcony could give you some added peace of mind.

4. Luxury bedding
When you book a Mini-Suite you can expect a better night’s sleep as your bed will feature a luxury mattress topper and pillows.
Club Class Mini-Suites and above feature ‘The Princess Luxury Bed’. Designed by sleep expert Dr Michael Breus, the mattress, linens, duvets and pillows have been carefully crafted for maximum comfort. So comfortable is this bed, that many cruisers are willing to pay upwards of $2,000 to recreate the experience at home.
Guests staying in Full Suites have the option to customise their bed with a pillow and mattress topper menu.
The Princess Luxury Bed
In each Princess Cruises Suite and Mini-Suite you’ll find not one but two flat-screen televisions – one in the bedroom and one in the seating area. On the newer ships these have a touch screen.
Touchscreen TV
Princess Cruises Sky Suites have an unbelievable four TVs as well as a view of the big movie screen on the pool deck. So, every member of the family can watch something different should they wish.
6. Bathrobes and slippers
Mini-Suites don’t come with bathrobes on Princess Cruises – those are reserved for guests staying in Club Class Mini-Suites and Full Suites. If you book the Sky Suite, you’ll get an extra special robe to wear.
Slippers are only provided for guests in Full Suites, except on Asian cruises where they are generally provided for everybody as is expected by the local culture. You’ll need to return your dressing gown at the end of the cruise, but the slippers are yours to keep.
Bathrobe and Slippers
7. Complimentary drinks
On Princess cruises, Mini-Suite guests will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of bubbly on embarkation day, but if you book Club Class or a Full Suite this will be upgraded to real Champagne.
Club Class and above also receive a complimentary wine set up on embarkation day, with half a bottle of red and half a bottle of white wine.
Club Class Complimentary Wine
Guests staying in Full Suites will also receive one complimentary mini-bar set up. But after this, you’ll be expected to pay for drinks from your mini-bar. You’ll also get free bottled water delivered daily.
If you stay in the Sky Suite, you’ll also be invited to a complimentary fine wine tasting on one evening.
Plus, suite guests get free drinks in the Concierge Lounge (more on that below).
8. Canapes
One of the perks of staying in a Club Class Mini-Suite or Full Suite is that you can have delicious canapes delivered each evening. To avoid waste, these aren’t delivered automatically, you’ll need to request them. So, don’t forget to let your room steward know if this is something that you’d like.

9. Dining perks
One of the main reasons to upgrade from a Mini-Suite to a Club Class Mini-Suite or Full Suite is the Club Class Dining Experience.
You’ll be seated in an exclusive area of the main dining room that’s a bit nicer than the rest of the room. You’ll benefit from the best waiters so you can be sure of the very best service and you’ll have extra menu options with a daily Chef’s Special that’s not on offer to other guests.
Club Class Dining is available for breakfast and dinner every day, as well as lunch on sea days.
Other culinary perks for suite guests include ‘welcome goodies’ from the chef on embarkation evening, afternoon tea served in your suite each day, a bowl of exotic fruits refreshed as required and an upgraded room service menu.
10. Priority access
While Mini-Suite guests are not invited to the front of any lines, those staying in Club Class Mini-Suites and above will benefit from priority embarkation and disembarkation at the beginning and end of the cruise.
Priority Check-In
Priority embarkation is great because you’ll be able to head straight to The Sanctuary to book a place. This usually gets fully booked within an hour or two of boarding.
And with priority disembarkation at the end of your cruise, you can leave the ship as you please without being restricted to an allotted time.
Priority group 1 luggage tags
If you choose a Full Suite, you’ll also get priority disembarkation at tender ports, meaning that there will be no wait for a boat to take you ashore. You will, however, have to join the line of people waiting for tender boats back to the ship.
You’ll also benefit from priority dining and shore excursion reservations and can join the VIP line at the guest services desk.
11. Free laundry
On longer cruises, free laundry can be a really valuable perk to have. If you book a Suite on a Princess cruise, you’ll receive free laundry and dry cleaning throughout your trip.
Guests staying in Full Suites have exclusive access to the Elite Lounge which is available on most ships. Here you can enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and discounted drinks between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm on selected evenings.
Suite guests also have unlimited access to the Concierge Lounge. Here, you can enjoy tea, coffee and snacks around the clock. Between 5 pm and 7 pm each evening you can also enjoy complimentary drinks. A concierge will also be on hand to assist with any reservations that you require.
This is the Suite Lounge on Enchanted Princess
13 Suite parties
Princess Cruises’ suites guests will receive invitations to a variety of special VIP events throughout the cruise. These are often attended by senior officers or the cruise director so guests will have the chance to chat to them and ask any questions
14. Spa access
Suite guests receive complimentary access to The Enclave – the thermal suite of the Lotus Spa – on selected ships. Here you can use the hydrotherapy pool, heated beds, steam rooms and saunas.
Access to The Enclave usually costs around $249 for a whole-cruise pass, although you can sometimes buy day passes. You’ll have to pay extra for any spa treatments.

15. Little touches

So how do you know which suite to choose?
If money is no question and you want the best suite on the ship, then there’s no question – you have to go for a Sky Suite. However, these are only available on the newest ships and there are only a couple on each ship, so you’ll need to book early to secure your place.
Princess Cruises Suites come with so many perks and plenty of room to relax. Many cruisers say that once they enjoy the benefits of a Suite, they never want to go back to the standard accommodation classes.
If a Suite is out of your budget, you can choose between a spacious Mini-Suite and a Club Class Mini-Suite which comes with some additional benefits.
Club Class – worth it or not?
On Princess Cruises, Club Class Mini-Suites gives you the perks of a Suite, at a lower price. Most people would say that Club Class is worth it because your Mini-Suite will be in a great location on the ship, you’ll enjoy exclusive Club Class Dining and priority boarding and debarkation.
To decide which is the best Princess Cruises Suite for you, I’d suggest getting quotes on the various options and considering carefully whether you think that the benefits that you’ll get from upgrading are worth it or not.

A cruise ship is a place for relaxation, a haven to get rid of your worries and simply…well, flush them away.

But hold on a minute! There’s one thing Carnival Cruise Line would really prefer if you didn’t send down the cabin toilet: wet wipes.
This includes wet wipes that are advertised as âflushableâ and safe for septic tanks.
John Heald Addresses Plumbing Issue
John Heald, Carnivalâs Brand Ambassador, recently shared a creative and informative social media post to highlight this danger to cruise ship plumbing.
He describes a fellow passenger who meticulously wiped down every surface on the airplane. This reminded him of a message about this handy household item:
“Anyway, this lady has reminded me to talk to you once again about wet wipes,” Heald writes.
While convenient, flushable wipes pose a significant challenge for shipboard plumbing systems.
Despite clear warnings in the bathroom and on the stateroom TV, passengers continue to flush wipes, leading to blockages that require unpleasant intervention.
Heald avoids graphic details but highlights the inconvenience caused. He states that the blockage âresults in Luigi having to put on the long glove and shoving his arm up a pipe full of the devil’s dumplings so that the toilets in that cabin section will start flushing again.â
Healdâs post cleverly contrasts the current popularity of wipes with simpler times.
“Of course, back when many of you reading this were children you never had wet sodding wipes,” Heald reflects, adding some colorful commentary on using spit to make homemade wipes.
However, the key message remains: wet wipes and shipboard plumbing don’t play well together. Heald concludes with a polite but firm request:
“On behalf of Luigi the Plumber,” he advises, “can I ask you not to put these into the toilet and flush. If you use them for any reason, drop them in the sanitary bags and let your stateroom attendant know and they will dispose of them.”
Iâve been on behind-the-scenes cruise ship tours where the guide will talk about the water treatment process and how wet wipes are one of the biggest issues they deal with.
The problem is that toilets back home are perfectly capable of dealing with wet wipes and regular toilet paper. So, some travelers are just used to using them everywhere they go.
But cruise ships are built differently, and wet wipes can cause major problems and headaches for the crew.
No one wants to have plumbing issues on a cruise, never mind a stopped-up toilet when there are no other cabins available on the ship.
The toilet paper on a cruise ship is indeed thin. But if everyone follows the rules with what they should avoid flushing down the toilet, it will ensure everyone can have a great getaway at sea.
Other Items to Avoid Flushing
A few other things you should not flush down a cruise ship toilet (some of these should not even have to be mentioned but here we are):
Feminine hygiene products
Diapers
Cotton swabs
Hair
Bandaids
Food scraps
Cigarette butts
Coffee grounds
Dental floss
Contact lenses
Anything not toilet paper or human waste

After the town of Bar Harbor, Maine voted to limit the number of cruise passengers that are allowed to visit to 1,000, local businesses tried to fight back.
Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up
After all, they were about to lose a good deal of revenue. And some opponents to the town’s passenger limit have said that the cap is so low that it will stop most cruise ships from calling on the port at all.
According to news reports, a federal court has denied the request of local businesses in the area.
River pilots and business leaders in Bar Harbor sued the town over the cruise ship restrictions earlier this year. They were seeking a court order to temporarily put a hold on the restrictive measures.
If the injunction were granted it would have stopped Bar Harbor from limiting cruise passengers to 1,000 per day.
With the request denied it will head back to federal court.
As it stands now, if there are more than 1,000 cruise passengers disembarking in one day there will be fines issued.
Proponents of the limit, including some residents, argue that large numbers of cruise ship passengers overwhelm the town’s infrastructure and put a strain on local resources. They believe a smaller volume of visitors will allow for a more enjoyable experience for both residents and tourists.
The court’s decision allows Bar Harbor to proceed with enforcing the 1,000-passenger limit for now. However, the underlying legal challenge from APPLL (Association to Preserve and Protect Local Livelihoods) remains unresolved.
The Association to Preserve and Protect Local Livelihoods (APPLL) is a non-profit that filed an injunction against the limiting ordinance.

Taking your first cruise can be an exciting yet daunting experience. With so many options and details to consider, proper planning can make all the difference. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your maiden voyage.
Boost Your Cruise Spending Money
One way to enhance your cruise experience is by having extra spending money. A creative method to achieve this is by decluttering your home and selling unwanted items. Consider selling old jewelry or antiques that are collecting dust. Did you know that selling antiques with Vintage Cash Cow is easy and hassle-free? This allows you to convert these forgotten treasures into cash. This extra money can add more activities and luxury to your cruise without straining your budget.
Choose the Right Cruise Line and Itinerary
Selecting the appropriate cruise line and itinerary is crucial. Research various cruise lines to find one that matches your interests, whether it’s family-oriented, luxury-focused, or adventure-packed. Look at the destinations and choose an itinerary that excites you. Shorter cruises are great for beginners to get a taste of cruising without a long-term commitment.
Book Early for the Best Deals
Booking your cruise well in advance can offer significant benefits. Early bird discounts, better cabin choices, and exclusive perks are often available to those who plan ahead. Additionally, early booking allows you to budget more effectively, as you’ll have time to pay off your trip in manageable instalments.
Understand What’s Included
Cruises can be all-inclusive, but it’s essential to understand what this term covers. Meals, certain beverages, and some onboard activities are typically included in the fare. However, extras like speciality dining, alcoholic drinks, shore excursions, and spa treatments may come at an additional cost. Knowing these details can help you avoid unexpected expenses.
Pack Smart and Light
Packing for a cruise requires a strategic approach. Ships have limited space, so overpacking can lead to cluttered cabins. Focus on versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and any necessary medications. It’s also wise to pack a small carry-on with important items and a change of clothes in case your luggage arrives late.
Stay Connected with Technology
While cruising is a great way to disconnect, staying in touch with family and friends is important. Check with your cruise line about Wi-Fi availability and costs. Some ships offer packages that can save you money compared to pay-as-you-go rates. Download any necessary travel apps before you embark to assist with translations, currency conversions, and itinerary planning.
Make the Most of Onboard Activities
Cruises are packed with activities, from Broadway-style shows and fitness classes to cooking demonstrations and trivia contests. Review the daily schedule provided by the cruise line to plan your days. Taking advantage of these activities can enhance your experience and provide endless entertainment without additional costs.
Plan Shore Excursions Wisely
Shore excursions are a highlight of any cruise, offering the chance to explore new destinations. Research and book these excursions in advance to secure spots in popular tours. Consider a mix of organized excursions and independent exploration to balance guided experiences with personal adventures. Keep in mind that booking through the cruise line can offer peace of mind, but independent tours can be cheaper and more flexible.
Budget for Additional Costs
Even with careful planning, additional costs can arise during your cruise. Gratuities, specialty dining, and souvenirs are common expenses that can add up. Set aside a budget for these extras to avoid financial stress. Some cruise lines allow you to prepay gratuities, which can help manage your expenses more effectively.
Stay Healthy and Safe
Your health and safety should be a top priority while cruising. Bring a basic first aid kit and any necessary medications. Practice good hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, to prevent illness. Familiarize yourself with the ship’s safety procedures and attend the mandatory safety drill. Also, be mindful of your surroundings during shore excursions and follow any safety guidelines provided by the cruise line.
Enjoy the Journey
Finally, remember that cruising is about relaxation and adventure. Embrace the unique experience of being at sea, meeting new people, and exploring new places. Be open to trying new activities and savour the journey. With these tips, you’re well on your way to a memorable and enjoyable first cruise.

MSC Cruises has announced an exciting expansion of its kids and family programmes, set to debut for the summer 2024 itineraries.
This enhancement includes a variety of new entertainment options and services designed to create unforgettable experiences for families.
From extended hours for kids’ clubs to new family game shows and marine conservation initiatives, MSC Cruises is committed to providing a memorable holiday for all ages.
At the heart of our business is family. We love creating unforgettable memories and holidays for everyone, especially for families. That’s why we proudly offer a fleetwide family program of entertainment and activities that resonates with our valued guests.”
Steve Leatham, global head of entertainment at MSC Cruises
One of the exciting new additions for summer 2024 is the “Doremiland Open House and Party.”
This initiative allows parents to spend quality time with their children in the kids’ clubs. During designated time slots each day, all Doremiland areas will be open for families to explore together.
In addition to the open house, MSC Cruises will host a big family party once per cruise. This event is designed for parents and kids to engage in fun activities and play together.
To accommodate the needs of families, MSC Cruises has extended the hours of its teens’ clubs.
This allows parents to enjoy some adult-only time while knowing that their children are in a safe and entertaining environment. The new hours will be 10 am to 1 pm and 3pm to midnight on sea days, and 3pm to midnight on port days.
Perhaps the biggest change is the fact that the Baby Club Chicco – the kids club for those under 2 – will now offer baby care services for children as young as six months.
Previously only children aged 1 and over would be cared for by staff while parents explored the ship. Now babies will be able to engage with Chicco toys and have naptime either in the baby club or in your own stateroom (with staff supervision at an extra charge).
Other changes include:
New marine conservation activities created in collaboration with the MSC Foundation, so that kids can learn about sustainable initiatives
The MSC Dance Crew competition returns, in partnership with Fremantle (the production company behind The X Factor and Got Talent TV shows)
Guinness World Record quiz activities will be rolled out to the following ships: MSC World Europa, MSC Euribia, MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Magnifica, MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa
Two new family game shows will be available for guests to take part in. World Quest will be a geography-based trivia game, and Caravaggio is a spy-themed game show with art-based challenges

Celebrity Cruises is well known for offering a premium cruising experience – ships are stylish and luxurious, and beautifully modern, while the dining venues and entertainment are top-notch.
But there is also the Celebrity Expedition Series – ships which are specifically designed to explore the less accessible regions of the world, primarily the Galapagos Islands, with more of a focus on the destination.
So – when planning a Celebrity cruise, which ship is the best depending on which type of holiday you want? In this guide, I’ve ranked them all to make deciding on your ship easier.
How I gathered the data
While I wish I could say that I’ve sailed on every Celebrity ship, I haven’t (yet!). So for me to rank all of the Celebrity Cruises ships in the fleet based on my own opinion would be a little bit unfair, wouldn’t it?
And I could just do it based on expert reviews, but that’s also subjective. Other cruise experts might have had an outlier experience where a ship was better or worse than normal.
So to make this guide as fair as possible, I’ve based it on thousands of reviews from past guests, and the average scores of those reviews. I’ve used three of the biggest cruise review sites in the world – Cruise Critic, Cruiseline.com and TripAdvisor.
Something that is important to clarify – “worst” doesn’t necessarily mean bad, just that the ship has scored less than the others in the fleet.
And that’s especially true with Celebrity Cruises. The worst ships in the fleet have an average review score of 3.87 out of 5, which is pretty darn high!
I’d also like to point out that this Celebrity Cruises guide has the ship with the best average score of any ship I’ve written about in a “best to worst” guide. So you know it’s a goodun…
The best Celebrity cruise ship is…
According to past guest reviews, the best Celebrity Cruises ship is Celebrity Xploration, one of the Celebrity Expedition ships. She first launched in 2017 and has a guest capacity of just 16, which may skew results. The best non-Exploration ship is Celebrity Equinox.
All Celebrity ships ranked by reviews
Here’s a look at all of the Celebrity Cruises ships in order.
1. Celebrity Xploration
I have to admit I was pretty surprised to see Celebrity Xploration top the scores, especially with an incredible average review score of 4.93 out of 5 (5 out of 5 on Cruise Critic and TripAdvisor, a perfect score).
But really that is probably helped by the low capacity of the ship – she takes just 16 guests onboard, so there are much fewer chances for random things to go wrong and cause the occasional bad review.
However, I’m not taking anything away – for all those guests to consistently give her perfect marks means that she is clearly an incredible ship. She has a buffet and dining room, a comfortable lounge and a spacious sun deck with a large Jacuzzi, so you can really enjoy the sumptuous experience of Celebrity even on this tiny vessel.
Add in the excitement of exploring the Galapagos Islands and getting so close to nature and it’s no wonder Celebrity Xploration is so popular.
The second most popular ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet is also the newest of the Expedition-class ships. The Expedition Class aren’t really sisters as the three ships are distinct, with Celebrity Flora being the largest of the three, although her maximum capacity is still just 100 guests.
Considered a super-yacht, she has some stunning accommodation options including six types of suite, a beautiful Discovery Lounge, and an Observatory where you can enjoy incredible views and an expansive library. She also has a choice of two restaurants, and glamping pods where you can relax on cosy beds and soak up the sunrise and sunset.
Celebrity Flora is a better choice if you want more of an atmosphere on the ship. With 100 guests there are more people to meet, and at the same time fewer guarantees that you’re spending all your time with the same faces. She’s also stunning – one of the best examples of an expedition ship that offers an amazing onboard experience.
3. Celebrity Xpedition
Rounding out the top 3 is Celebrity Xpedition, the original Expedition ship for the Celebrity Cruises fleet. First launching in 2001, she originally had a capacity of 100 guests but in 2019 this was reduced to 48, making her another small ship that’s perfect for the Galapagos Islands.
She’s a little older, first launching in 2001, although her tasteful decor means that she still offers an upmarket cruising experience, just with a look that balances classic wood panelling and patterned carpets with more contemporary touches.
She’s popular as a good balance between Celebrity Xploration and Celebrity Flora – small and peaceful, but with enough people onboard to keep meal times and excursions interesting. And similar to the other ships, her Galapagos itineraries are extremely popular with wildlife-loving guests.
4. Celebrity Ascent
The first of the main ocean-sailing fleet in this list is Celebrity Ascent, also the newest ship in the Celebrity fleet.
It’s a little surprising that she’s the only Edge-class ship this high up in the list. Her decor is absolutely stunning, she has loads of great dining options, and there are some fantastic itineraries to choose from.
5. Celebrity Equinox
For a cruise line that prides itself on offering incredible modern design, it’s a little surprising to see Celebrity Equinox – a ship which launched in 2009 – at the top of the pile when it comes to the main ocean cruise ship side of the fleet.
She’s popular because of her relaxing atmosphere, and the careful attention paid to updating the ship – her last refurbishment was in 2019.
She’s popular with a wide range of travellers too, including families – although because the kids’ clubs are tucked away on Deck 15, it’s never a ship that feels too hectic for couples or solo passengers.
Unfortunately some of the guest reviews that are negative focus on bad experiences with food quality, and some uninspiring entertainment. Overall though she is a very popular ship and most people report having an amazing time on-board.
6. Celebrity Reflection
Celebrity Reflection was the last of the Solstice-class ships to launch in 2012, taking the existing design and enhancing it slightly to become, at the time, the largest ship in the fleet, and she remains only one of two ships sailing for Celebrity with a passenger capacity exceeding 3,000 (only just).
Positive reviews comment mostly on the spacious nature of the ship and the many places she has where guests can just unwind and soak in the atmosphere. Guests generally love the service onboard too, praising the crew for doing anything in their power to make each cruise feel special.
However, there are some themes with criticisms, including again the food – it seems that some guests don’t get the best experience.
I think, reading reviews, Celebrity sets such high standards that when they miss them it can disappoint guests even if the food is ‘fine’, which is a shame in how it reflects (pun intended) on the ship overall.
7. Celebrity Apex
Celebrity Apex is the second of the Edge-class ships to appear on this list, and for it to be as low as sixth is a little surprising – visually she is absolutely breathtaking, she’s very spacious and she’s equipped with a host of interesting places to unwind or things to do during your cruise.
She hosts a number of innovative features, with the Magic Carpet being one of the most popular. This is a platform that moves up and down the side of the ship, serving as a ramp to shore, a bar and a restaurant. It’s a fun place to relax while you’re at sea!
Part of the reason the Edge-class ships seem to be a little lower is down to their size and their ‘newness’. There are a lot of guests onboard so the occasional bad score is to be expected, and some reviews talk about service or food quality being inconsistent, which can happen as a new crew gets used to serving more guests.
8. Celebrity Eclipse
Celebrity Eclipse launched in 2010 as the third of five Solstice-class ships. However, she seems to be the ship in most need of some TLC. A number of guests say there are elements that are tired and that look a little older, belying the contemporary atmosphere that Celebrity likes to create on its ships.
Despite this, the ship remains very popular with an average review score of 4.2 out of 5. Even though elements are showing their age, she still has an elegant atmosphere and a lot of space where guests feel they can relax.
No Solstice-class ships are packed with daytime entertainment, but there’s a great pool area and several quiet indoor spaces to unwind.
Unlike Celebrity Reflection and Celebrity Equinox, there aren’t many bad things to say about the food either – most guests say it is excellent.
9. Celebrity Solstice
Celebrity Solstice is the original of the Solstice-class, having first set sail in 2008 for the cruise line. And she epitomises what makes a Celebrity cruise feel special – her public areas are wonderfully spacious and inviting and the crew are excellent – I’ve really struggled to find any review that remarks badly on how diligent and hardworking the team are onboard.
There are some criticisms of the food – similar to some of her sister ships – but more on the most recent reviews. It may be down to the price point of a Celebrity cruise and the raised expectations.
Celebrity Solstice is another where some reviews mention the tired elements of the ship – she is overdue for a renovation. If the cruise line decides to refurbish the ship she may climb higher in the list.
10. Celebrity Silhouette
Rounding out the Solstice-class – before we’ve even got to the second of the flagship Edge-class ships – is Celebrity Silhouette. First launched in 2011, she did have her scheduled refurbishment in 2020 which has helped to give her a much-needed freshen up, keeping staterooms, suites and public areas looking great.
The entertainment on the ship is broadly praised, as is the service of the crew – becoming standard now for the Solstice-class ships.
Unfortunately, the recurring criticisms of the food also reappear for this ship, although with specific mention of a reduction in choice and premium options. It seems that most negative reviews are down to overall menu changes rather than the service of a specific ship.
11. Celebrity Beyond
Just missing out on the top 10, Celebrity Beyond does score well though, with a 4.1 out of 5 average meaning most guests still have a very positive experience.
Guests love the look of the ship and the variety of places to relax and dine onboard. She continues to offer innovative experiences, including the enhanced Retreat spaces and the fantastic evening entertainment infused with modern tech.
Sadly it seems the service of the crew is currently letting down its score. This often happens with new ships as they adjust, and hopefully, the problems with long lines or slow service are resolved as the crew becomes more experienced.
12. Celebrity Edge
Celebrity Edge was the first of the Edge-class ships, seen as the next generation for the Celebrity fleet. She launched in 2018 and helped to really reinvigorate the fleet with a stunning design. She is extremely modern but tasteful, with expansive public areas where guests can unwind.
She has a wealth of dining options too and reviews are relatively good for the service, although the change in Celebrity’s menu overall does impact some comments.
While most people say great things about Celebrity Edge, I’ve seen some reviews that say the Solstice Class just feels more ‘Celebrity’, and that Celebrity Edge is a bit more style over substance, including less spacious rooms and entertainment that’s a little more repetitive, if technically impressive.
13. Celebrity Summit
Unsurprisingly, the oldest class of ship in the Celebrity fleet that is still sailing – the Millennium Class – takes up the final places on this list. Celebrity Summit was the penultimate ship for that class, launching in 2001, and while she is showing her age in places she is still a popular choice.
A considerable – and considerate – renovation in 2019 helped, ensuring the modern feel of Celebrity as a whole was maintained. Guests love the quieter experience onboard and the good quality food, as well as the service.
One area which could be improved is the onboard entertainment – some reviews describe it as a bit bland compared to other ships in the fleet.
14. Celebrity Millennium
Celebrity Millennium is the oldest ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet, having launched in (you guessed it) the year 2000. She was refurbished at the same time as Celebrity Summit though, benefiting from a refit which brought her bang up to date.
She’s more of a ship for those who enjoy destination cruising, instead of spending a lot of time being entertained onboard. Reviews speak positively about the public spaces and the service of the crew, but negative points focus more on the lack of daytime entertainment, and the repetitive nature of the evening shows.
15. Celebrity Constellation
Celebrity Constellation was the last of the Millennium-class ships to launch for the fleet, back in 2002, and for a good few years, she was considered the flagship of the fleet alongside Celebrity Infinity.
She remains popular with those who enjoy relaxation, with a quieter atmosphere onboard. If you like lively cruising with lots to do during sea days then this isn’t the ship for you, but if being sat by the pool before enjoying premium dining sounds perfect, Celebrity Constellation could be ideal.
Unfortunately, her scheduled renovation for 2020 was cancelled, meaning her last refurb was in 2013, and it shows – there are some areas where she needs an update soon, if she is to remain with the fleet.
16. Celebrity Infinity
Celebrity Infinity rounds off the Millennium Class and was first launched in 2001. Like sister ship Celebrity Constellation, her planned refurb in 2020 was cancelled and so her last update was in 2013, which has led to some reviewers saying she is in serious need of some attention in places.
Despite that, the ship is popular, with a calm atmosphere and some pleasant places to unwind during the day. She is frequently described as “comfortable”, for better or worse.
If you don’t need the glitz and sleek style of the latest Celebrity ships and just want a quiet cruise with great food and service, she still has plenty to offer.
Tips on choosing the best Celebrity ship for you
It’s important to do some research when choosing a Celebrity cruise, because everyone’s different, and so certain ships will be a better fit for you.
Looking for the nicest Celebrity Cruises ship? That’ll depend on your definition of “nice”, but Celebrity Apex is one of the most popular ships in the fleet and one that is equipped with stunning facilities that have a really premium feel, including gorgeous spaces to unwind and relax during your cruise.
Celebrity Equinox is often regarded as one of the best Celebrity Cruises ships for families. Newer ships focus more on the adult crowd, despite welcoming families, while Equinox strikes a balance for the whole family and is one of the most popular ships in the entire fleet.
The best Celebrity Cruises ship for exploring the Galapagos Islands, according to past guests, is Celebrity Xploration, although both Celebrity Flora and Celebrity Xpedition are also extremely popular. Choose Celebrity Flora if you want more of a crowd – she hosts 100 guests, compared to just 16 on Celebrity Xploration.
The bottom line
So there you have it – there are some interesting conclusions we can draw from this ranking – namely that the Expedition ships are extremely popular and definitely worth trying, and that the older ships in the fleet are the least popular.
That’s not always the case with other cruise lines – sometimes newer ships lose some of the popularity that a cruise line may have held. I think with Celebrity Cruises, since their ships are purposefully built to be super-modern, that means the more contemporary ships will always score higher.
But ultimately it depends on what you want from a cruise. At least we know that all Celebrity ships are well-liked with high average scores, so you can’t really go wrong.
