Cruise Ships Cut Heavy-Fuel Use As Shore-Power Readiness Surges

Cruise lines are using less heavy fuel oil while rapidly expanding shore-power capability, according to new fleetwide data released Wednesday by Cruise Lines International Association. CLIA says heavy fuel oil accounted for 60.6% of reported oceangoing cruise fuel use in 2024, down from 74.2% in 2019, while non-HFO fuels rose to 39.4%.

The trade group’s 2026 Environmental Technologies and Practices report also says 193 member cruise ships can now connect to onshore power, up from 55 in 2018. Another 47 ships are slated for retrofits, and 39 newbuilds are specified for the technology. But port infrastructure continues to lag: only about 40 cruise ports worldwide — fewer than 3% — currently have at least one cruise berth equipped with onshore power.

CLIA’s reporting covers more than 90% of global oceangoing cruise capacity.

The New Ships I’m Most Excited About In 2027

There’s something special about looking ahead at the next generation of cruise ships. Some bring completely new ideas, some take successful concepts even further, and others are exciting simply because they give us a glimpse of where cruising is heading next.

While plenty more ships will launch in 2027, these are the ones I’m watching most closely right now. Some are huge family-friendly mega-ships, others are luxury vessels that couldn’t be more different. They’re ranked purely by how excited I am to see them enter service.

1. Hero of the Seas

Hero of the Seas
  • Cruise line: Royal Caribbean
  • Expected launch date: August 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 250,800

Royal Caribbean has spent the last few years redefining what a cruise ship can be, and Hero of the Seas looks set to continue that trend. As the fourth Icon Class vessel, it will build on a formula that’s already proved hugely popular with families and first-time cruisers alike.

Hero of the Seas Ultimate Family Treehouse

What’s exciting isn’t just the ship itself but what new features might be introduced. Royal Caribbean rarely delivers a carbon copy, and each new vessel tends to bring tweaks, improvements and fresh attractions. By 2027, the cruise line will have had several years of guest feedback from Icon of the Seas and its sisters, giving it the chance to refine the concept even further.

The biggest question is simple – what could possibly come next after Icon?

2. Norwegian Aura

Norwegian Aura
  • Cruise line: Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Expected launch date: May 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 170,000

Norwegian Aqua may be grabbing the headlines today, but Norwegian Aura could end up being the more interesting ship. As the latest Prima Plus Class vessel, it’s expected to build on a design that’s already earning praise for offering something a little different from the industry’s biggest mega-ships.

The Prima Class ships have focused heavily on outdoor spaces, elevated dining and a more upmarket feel than previous Norwegian vessels. Aura should continue that direction while potentially introducing new venues and attractions of its own.

I’m especially interested to see how Norwegian evolves the Prima concept. Cruise lines often learn a lot from the first few ships in a class, and by the time Aura arrives, Norwegian will have had years to fine-tune the experience.

3. Disney Believe

Disney Believe Rendering
  • Cruise line: Disney Cruise Line
  • Expected launch date: Late 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 144,000

Disney Cruise Line has been on an incredible expansion journey recently, and Disney Believe is one of the most anticipated additions still to come.

What makes Disney ships exciting isn’t usually waterslides or record-breaking statistics. It’s the storytelling. Disney has a knack for creating ships that feel immersive without becoming overwhelming, and every new vessel brings fresh themes, entertainment and character experiences.

The exact details are still limited, which only adds to the intrigue. Disney’s newer ships have shown how the cruise line is willing to blend classic ocean liner elegance with cutting-edge technology and spectacular entertainment.

For families, this could easily become one of the most sought-after ships of 2027.

4. MSC World Atlantic

MSC World Europa
  • Cruise line: MSC Cruises
  • Expected launch date: Late 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 215,863

MSC Cruises continues to grow at a remarkable pace, and World Atlantic represents another step forward for the World Class programme.

The World Class ships have impressed with their futuristic design, huge range of facilities and distinctive European style. They’re among the most visually striking ships currently sailing, particularly with their dramatic outdoor promenades and impressive architecture.

What’s exciting here is seeing how MSC adapts the platform for new markets and guest expectations. The cruise line has become increasingly popular with British and North American travellers while retaining much of its European character.

World Atlantic should continue that balancing act while adding its own personality to the growing class.

5. Carnival Festivale

Carnival Festivale
  • Cruise line: Carnival Cruise Line
  • Expected launch date: Spring 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 182,015

Carnival’s next major ship launch is particularly interesting because it signals the next chapter beyond the Excel Class vessels.

Carnival has always excelled at creating ships that prioritise fun, and Festivale looks set to continue that tradition. While details remain limited, the cruise line has already hinted at new family-focused features and experiences designed specifically for future generations of cruisers.

Carnival ships don’t always chase luxury or innovation for innovation’s sake. Instead, they focus on creating memorable holidays for ordinary families, and that’s one of the reasons they remain so popular.

Festivale feels like a ship that could quietly become one of the biggest success stories of the year.

6. Oceania Sonata

Oceania Sonata Exterior 800
  • Cruise line: Oceania Cruises
  • Expected launch date: August 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 86,000

Not every exciting new ship needs to carry thousands of passengers.

Oceania Sonata will be the first vessel in Oceania’s new Sonata Class, making it one of the most significant launches in the premium cruise sector for years. Oceania has built a loyal following thanks to its destination-focused itineraries, excellent food and refined atmosphere.

Oceania Sonata Owners Suite 800

Being the first in a brand-new class automatically makes Sonata fascinating. New ship classes often reveal where a cruise line believes the future lies, and it’ll be interesting to see how Oceania balances innovation with the features that existing guests already love.

Food lovers in particular will be watching closely.

7. Orient Express Olympian

Orient Express Olympian Yacht
  • Cruise line: Orient Express Sailing Yachts
  • Expected launch date: Spring 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 26,200

Few names carry as much romance and history as Orient Express.

Olympian isn’t aiming to compete with the biggest cruise ships in the world. Instead, it’s designed to create an entirely different experience. Combining luxury hospitality with sailing yacht technology, the vessel promises something far removed from traditional cruising.

Part of the excitement comes from the fact that this is a completely new venture. We know the Orient Express brand from luxury rail travel and iconic journeys, but translating that heritage to the sea is an ambitious challenge.

If it succeeds, Olympian could become one of the most distinctive ships sailing anywhere in the world.

8. EXPLORA IV And EXPLORA V

Explora II
  • Cruise line: Explora Journeys
  • Expected launch dates: 2027
  • Gross tonnage: 72,810

Explora Journeys has quickly established itself as one of the most intriguing luxury cruise brands, and 2027 will see the fleet continue to grow with the arrival of both EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V.

What makes these ships exciting is how confidently the brand has carved out its own identity. Rather than trying to copy traditional luxury cruise lines, Explora has focused on creating a more contemporary, yacht-inspired experience.

By the time these vessels arrive, we’ll have a much clearer picture of how successful that strategy has been. The expansion also signals long-term confidence from the company, which is always encouraging to see in a relatively new cruise brand.

These ships may not generate mainstream headlines, but luxury cruise fans will be paying close attention.

Read more: Explora Journeys Review – The Best Cruise Ever?

9. Celebrity River Cruises

Celebrity Compass River Cruise Ship
  • Cruise line: Celebrity River Cruises
  • Expected launch dates: 2027

There will be plenty of new river ships launching in 2027, but Celebrity’s arrival feels different because it’s not simply adding another vessel to an existing fleet. It’s the launch of an entirely new cruise line.

Celebrity Cruises has built a strong reputation in the ocean cruise market, particularly among travellers looking for a premium experience without stepping into full luxury pricing. Seeing that approach applied to river cruising is genuinely intriguing.

We still know relatively little about the ships themselves, but that’s part of the appeal. A new entrant can bring fresh ideas, challenge established operators and potentially attract people who have never considered a river cruise before.

For that reason alone, this is one of the launches I’m most curious about.

Final Word

Trying to predict which new ship will become the standout success of 2027 is almost impossible. Some vessels arrive with huge fanfare only to blend into the background, while others quietly exceed expectations.

For me, Hero of the Seas sits firmly at the top of the list because it’s likely to push the boundaries of mainstream cruising yet again. But every ship here offers something different, whether that’s family entertainment, premium dining, luxury yacht-style cruising or even the launch of an entirely new cruise line.

The best part is that we’re still early in the reveal cycle. Between now and launch day, there’ll be plenty more announcements, surprises and perhaps a few unexpected additions to the 2027 lineup.

Carnival-cruise-drinks.jpg

These 9 Drinks Are Always FREE On Carnival Cruises

Carnival’s CHEERS! package can look tempting at first glance… Unlimited cocktails, speciality coffees, bottled water, energy drinks. It all sounds great until you realise the price can add hundreds to your cruise fare!

This image shows three bottles of liquor displayed on a bar counter aboard a Carnival Cruise ship. The bottles include Campari, Amaro Nonino, and Amaro Montenegro, each accompanied by a small glass of the corresponding drink in front of them. The background features a well-lit bar area with a variety of other bottles on shelves, and a sign that reads "AMARI." The setup highlights the selection of Italian liqueurs available on the cruise.

And that leaves a lot of first-time Carnival cruisers wondering the same thing – if you skip the drinks package, will you actually get anything decent to drink for free?

The good news is yes, absolutely. Carnival includes more free drinks than many people realise, and unless you’re planning to drink cocktails all day long, you might find the complimentary options are more than enough.

There are a few catches though.

1. Water

Tap water is completely free on Carnival cruise ships, and you can get it all over the ship.

You can ask for iced water in restaurants and bars, while water dispensers are available in the buffet area. The water onboard is filtered and perfectly safe to drink.

water machine

A lot of cruisers actually prefer the taste to the tap water back home.

The tap water in your cabin bathroom is safe too, although it may not always be very cold. If you like icy water, ask your cabin steward for an ice bucket.

What isn’t free is bottled water. Carnival sells bottled still and sparkling water separately, or it’s included with some drinks packages and casino offers.

One tip – bring a reusable bottle or insulated tumbler. Most regular Carnival cruisers do.

2. Lemonade

Carnival’s lemonade is one of the most popular free drinks onboard.

lemonade machine

You’ll usually find it at the self-service drink stations on the Lido deck near the buffet. It’s American-style lemonade rather than fizzy Sprite-style lemonade, so think sweet, tart and refreshing.

It’s available throughout much of the day and makes a nice alternative when you’re bored of plain water.

A lot of cruisers bring powdered drink mixes or reusable tumblers to make the free lemonade last longer around the ship.

3. Iced Tea

Unsweetened iced tea is another free staple on Carnival ships.

Free-lemonade-and-iced-tea

You’ll normally find it alongside the lemonade dispensers in the buffet area, and it’s also available in the Main Dining Room.

If you’re American, you should know Carnival’s iced tea isn’t sweet tea by default. You’ll need to add sugar or sweetener yourself.

Some guests even make their own sweet tea by brewing hot tea over ice with extra sugar packets.

4. Coffee

Regular brewed coffee is free on Carnival cruises – good news if you need that caffeine hit.

Carnival coffee

You can grab it from the buffet drink stations and restaurants throughout the day, and it’s usually available almost around the clock.

The free coffee is basic drip coffee rather than barista-made coffee, but most guests seem perfectly happy with it.

If you want cappuccinos, lattes, iced coffees or espresso drinks, those count as speciality coffee and cost extra unless you have CHEERS! or another package that includes them.

This is where many people get caught out when looking at the drinks packages. If you drink several speciality coffees every day, the package starts making more sense.

But if you just want a standard coffee in the morning? You’re covered already.

5. Hot Tea

Tea drinkers won’t go thirsty either, so more good news for fans of hot beverages.

Carnival offers complimentary hot tea bags at buffet drink stations and in restaurants, with options usually including English Breakfast, green tea and herbal teas.

Tea on a cruise

The quality is fairly standard cruise tea, but it does the job.

If you’re sailing from the UK, you may notice more tea options appear than on Caribbean sailings. Carnival does adapt slightly to British passengers on European itineraries, though only with minor touches like this. Don’t expect a completely British experience onboard.

6. Hot Chocolate

Carnival’s hot chocolate has a surprisingly loyal fanbase. You’ll usually find it at selected buffet beverage stations, although it can be easy to miss because not every machine offers it.

hot chocolate

A lot of guests mix the hot chocolate with the free coffee to make a DIY mocha.

Others swirl it into Carnival’s soft-serve ice cream for what might be one of the least healthy but most enjoyable cruise snacks possible.

7. Milk

Milk is available free during breakfast service, including regular milk and often skimmed milk too.

You’ll normally find cartons in the buffet area near the cereal and breakfast stations.

If you need dairy-free alternatives like soy milk or almond milk, Carnival can often provide them if requested, although availability can vary by ship.

8. Chocolate Milk

At breakfast, many Carnival ships also offer cartons of chocolate milk.

chocolate milk

This tends to be one of those hidden little cruise favourites that regular Carnival cruisers quietly get excited about.

If you don’t immediately see it in the buffet, it’s worth asking.

9. Fruit Juice

Carnival offers free fruit juice during breakfast hours.

The exact options vary, but usually include orange juice, apple juice and sometimes tropical blends like orange-guava-passionfruit juice.

Carnival fruit juice machine

Outside breakfast hours, juice generally becomes chargeable unless it’s included with your package.

That catches some first-time cruisers out, especially if they’re used to cruise lines that offer juice all day.

There are also a few situations where Carnival guests may get extra complimentary drinks onboard.

Art Auctions

Some art auctions offer free sparkling wine or Champagne-style drinks while you browse.

Carnival Art Auction

It’s not guaranteed on every sailing, but it’s common enough that experienced cruisers know to keep an eye out.

Just remember the goal is usually to encourage guests to buy artwork.

Casino Offers

Carnival often gives casino guests complimentary drinks offers, especially through casino promotions.

Some offers include free drinks while playing in the casino, although rules vary depending on the promotion and your casino status.

Carnival Casino

Typically, drinks are meant to be ordered while actively gambling rather than simply walking up to the bar.

These perks can include alcoholic drinks, soda, speciality coffee, bottled water and energy drinks.

VIFP Parties And Special Events

Carnival’s VIFP loyalty programme sometimes includes invite-only events with complimentary drinks.

Carnival Free Water Bottle Tag

These can vary depending on your loyalty level, the sailing and special promotions running at the time.

Some suite guests and casino guests may also receive invitations to private events with free drinks.

Suite Perks

If you’re staying in a suite on your Carnival cruise, you’ll get two large bottles of water free.

There’s been some confusion over this – it used to be that you had to claim the bottles from a bar, and people would drink the bottles in their minibar instead, thinking those were the free ones, then complain about charges…

It’s all been simplified now and the free bottles are in your suite, with a tag explaining that they’re free.

Read more: Carnival Cruise Suite Perks (Are They Worth the Upgrade?)

Carnival’s drink rules are stricter than some cruise lines, but you are allowed to bring some drinks onboard yourself.

Each guest can carry on:

  • One 750ml bottle of wine or Champagne per adult
  • Up to 12 sealed cans or cartons of non-alcoholic drinks

There are some important rules though…

The soft drinks must be cans or cartons – not plastic bottles. And they need to be packed in your carry-on luggage rather than your checked bags.

This can be a really good money-saving trick if you’re driving to the port. If you’re flying, though, carrying a 12-pack through airports and transfers may not feel worth the hassle.

A lot of Carnival cruisers compromise by bringing a few favourite drinks onboard and then relying on the free lemonade, iced tea and water for the rest of the cruise.

Suggested read: Carnival Cruise Luggage Rules

What Isn’t Free On Carnival?

These drinks are not included unless you buy a drinks package or pay individually:

  • Speciality coffee like cappuccinos, lattes and espresso
  • Bottled water
  • Soda
  • Energy drinks
  • Milkshakes
  • Mocktails
  • Fresh juices and smoothies
  • Alcoholic drinks

Is Carnival’s CHEERS! Package Worth It?

This really depends on how you cruise.

Thousands of cruisers use my free drink package calculator to find out before they sail….

For many people, CHEERS! only starts making financial sense if you’re drinking several alcoholic drinks per day alongside bottled water, speciality coffees or energy drinks.

Carnival drinks menu

A couple of cocktails and a morning latte usually won’t justify the cost.

And this is where Carnival’s free drinks selection helps more than people expect.

You can already get:

  • Water
  • Lemonade
  • Iced tea
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Hot chocolate
  • Breakfast juices

…without spending anything extra.

If you mostly drink wine with dinner, it may actually work out cheaper to skip CHEERS! and either pay as you go or look into Carnival’s wine packages instead.

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!

See the latest Carnival cruise offers…

The Bottom Line

Carnival definitely wants guests to buy drinks packages – that part is obvious. But the free drinks situation onboard is actually pretty decent.

You won’t be stuck drinking plain tap water all week unless you want to.

Between the lemonade, iced tea, coffee, tea, juices and hot chocolate, there’s enough variety that many cruisers happily skip CHEERS! altogether and save themselves hundreds.

And if you bring a few cans onboard yourself, you may find you barely miss the package at all.

Norwegian Aura To Feature Exclusive Whitney Houston Tribute Production

Norwegian Cruise Line has unveiled the entertainment programme for its newest ship, Norwegian Aura, headlined by an exclusive tribute show celebrating the legendary Whitney Houston. The 170,000-gross-tonne vessel, currently under construction in Italy, is scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean in May 2027 with a comprehensive lineup of theatrical productions and live music experiences.

Whitney Houston NCL

The cruise line announced the entertainment roster on Tuesday, 15th September 2026, revealing that “Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston” will serve as the flagship production aboard the fifth Prima-class ship. The show has been developed in collaboration with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music, ensuring an authentic and comprehensive tribute to one of music’s most celebrated voices.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in cruise ship entertainment, bringing together the resources and archival materials necessary to create a production worthy of Houston’s legacy. The singer’s achievements remain unparalleled in popular music history, with more than 220 million records sold worldwide, six Grammy Awards, and seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits – a record that stood as testament to her extraordinary commercial and critical success.

The 45-minute production incorporates contemporary arrangements of Houston’s most beloved songs, blending musical performance with narrative storytelling and sophisticated stagecraft. This approach mirrors the format that Norwegian Cruise Line has successfully deployed on other Prima-class vessels, creating concert-style experiences that transport audiences into the artist’s musical journey whilst maintaining theatrical elements that distinguish the shows from simple tribute concerts.

Iconic Hits Featured In Three-Storey Venue

Iconic Hits Featured In Three-Storey Venue

Guests aboard Norwegian Aura will experience performances of multiple chart-topping hits that defined Houston’s career, including “It’s Not Right, But It’s OK,” the timeless ballad “I Will Always Love You,” and the exuberant “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).” These songs represent different phases of Houston’s career and showcase the vocal range and emotional depth that made her one of the most influential singers of the 20th century.

The production will be staged in the Aura Theatre & Club, a three-storey venue spanning Decks 6, 7, and 8 in the forward section of the ship. This multi-level theatre design has become a signature feature of the Prima class, offering sightlines and acoustics specifically engineered for elaborate productions whilst accommodating substantial audience capacity.

The vertical configuration allows for dramatic staging possibilities and ensures that passengers throughout the venue can experience the show’s visual and auditory elements.

Pat Houston, executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and president of the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership in a statement released with the announcement. “We are thrilled to partner with Norwegian Cruise Line to present ‘Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston’ for the debut of the Norwegian Aura in May 2027,” she said.

Houston added a personal dimension to the collaboration, noting that “Whitney enjoyed cruises. Her fans and supporters will have a nostalgic experience enjoying the extraordinary artistry and live music of Whitney Houston, performed by world-class musicians whilst sailing on the high seas.” This connection between the artist and the cruise experience adds meaningful resonance to the show’s maritime setting.

Building On Success Of Prince And Elton John Productions

The Whitney Houston tribute follows a proven formula that Norwegian Cruise Line has successfully implemented across its Prima-class fleet. “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince” premiered aboard Norwegian Aqua, whilst “Rocket Man: A Celebration of Elton John” debuted on Norwegian Luna.

Both productions have garnered positive passenger response and critical acclaim within the cruise industry, establishing Norwegian’s reputation for delivering Las Vegas-calibre entertainment at sea.

Bryan White, vice president of entertainment production at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, emphasised the company’s commitment to raising the bar for shipboard entertainment. “Every new ship is an opportunity for Norwegian Cruise Line to push the boundaries of what entertainment at sea can be, and with ‘Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston,’ we’re building on the incredible momentum we’ve seen from our Vegas residency-inspired productions celebrating some of music’s most iconic artists,” White stated.

This strategic approach positions Norwegian Cruise Line distinctly within the competitive cruise market, where entertainment offerings increasingly serve as key differentiators amongst brands. By securing exclusive partnerships with music estates and production companies, the line creates unique selling propositions that cannot be replicated by competitors, potentially influencing booking decisions for music enthusiasts and entertainment-focused travellers.

Steampunk Spectacle And Vinyl-Inspired Music Collective

Beyond the headlining Whitney Houston show, Norwegian Aura will feature “ILLUMINOX: Infinite Wonder Unboxed,” a 45-minute production that combines illusions, acrobatics, and visual effects within a steampunk aesthetic.

The show promises to transform impossibilities into realities through theatrical magic and technical wizardry, appealing to guests seeking spectacular visual entertainment beyond traditional musical theatre.

“The Vinyl Republic” represents the cruise line’s newest music collective concept, celebrating the legacy of vinyl records across diverse genres including country, funk, and blues. This live music programme will feature two themed late-night parties – one dedicated to rock and another to country – alongside various performances throughout the ship on every sailing.

The concept taps into the ongoing vinyl revival and nostalgia for analogue music culture whilst providing versatile entertainment spaces across the vessel.

This multi-venue approach ensures that passengers encounter live music experiences throughout their journey, whether in dedicated performance spaces or more casual settings. The strategy reflects industry understanding that modern cruise passengers seek entertainment options beyond scheduled theatre shows, preferring spontaneous encounters with quality musicianship in various onboard locations.

Adults-Only Cabaret And Poolside Latin Celebration

“LunaTique: Pop Circus” will bring adults-only entertainment to Norwegian Aura, merging cabaret performance, circus artistry, and nightlife atmosphere with curated cocktails. Passengers should note that this particular show carries an additional charge, distinguishing it from the complimentary entertainment offerings included in the cruise fare.

The extra-fee structure typically allows for more intimate venues, premium beverage service, and specialised performances that justify the supplementary cost.

“Latin LIVE!” rounds out the entertainment portfolio with an energy-filled poolside celebration featuring live percussionists, vocalists, and dance performances.

This outdoor entertainment experience extends the ship’s programming beyond interior venues, activating pool deck spaces during evening hours and creating festive atmospheres that complement warm-weather Mediterranean itineraries.

The Latin music focus connects with growing passenger interest in diverse cultural experiences and provides high-energy entertainment suitable for the casual outdoor environment.

To help guests navigate the extensive entertainment options, Norwegian Aura will present “Aura FIRST NIGHT,” a welcome showcase introducing the complete lineup through sample performances. This orientation event helps passengers plan their entertainment schedules effectively, ensuring they don’t miss preferred shows during their sailing whilst discovering performances they might not have otherwise considered.

Construction Progress And Mediterranean Deployment

Construction Progress And Mediterranean Deployment

Norwegian Aura is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, where the Prima-class vessels are being built. The ship successfully completed her float-out ceremony on 17th April 2026, marking a significant construction milestone.

She is now undergoing interior fitting and finishing work in preparation for her May 2027 debut.

At 170,000 gross tonnes, Norwegian Aura represents the largest ship ever built for Norwegian Cruise Line, continuing the company’s strategy of measured capacity growth through the Prima class.

These vessels balance increased size with design features intended to maintain the line’s freestyle cruising philosophy whilst incorporating spaces and amenities that passengers increasingly expect from modern cruise ships.

The Mediterranean deployment for the inaugural season positions Norwegian Aura in one of cruising’s most popular and accessible regions, where historical ports, cultural attractions, and favourable weather conditions attract first-time cruisers and experienced passengers alike.

This strategic choice for the ship’s debut allows Norwegian Cruise Line to showcase the vessel to a broad international audience whilst building operational experience before potential repositioning to other deployment regions.

The entertainment programme aboard Norwegian Aura demonstrates Norwegian Cruise Line’s continued investment in distinctive onboard experiences that differentiate its product within an increasingly competitive marketplace.

As cruise lines vie for passenger loyalty and bookings, unique partnerships like the Whitney Houston estate collaboration provide marketing advantages and create memorable experiences that extend beyond destinations and dining options.

Cruise Ship Evacuated After Fire Breaks Out In Denmark

Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from the cruise ship Amadea after a fire broke out while the vessel was alongside the cruise quay in Rønne, Denmark, on Monday, 14th September 2026.

Amadea Cruise Ship

The fire started in a linen-storage compartment aboard the Bahamas-flagged vessel, prompting the evacuation of 320 passengers. No passengers or crew members were injured during the incident.

Bornholm Police received the alarm at 7.21am, bringing police officers and emergency services to the port. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it within around ten minutes.

Authorities subsequently confirmed that the immediate danger had passed, while those evacuated from Amadea were reported to be safe and in good condition.

Evacuation praised by fire service

Emergency crews responding to the incident included Bornholm Fire Service and the Danish Emergency Management Agency, with personnel remaining at the cruise terminal as the affected area was examined.

The ship’s crew assisted the emergency response both by evacuating passengers and by helping firefighters find their way through the vessel.

Emil Gørløv, incident commander with Bornholm Fire Service, praised the crew’s response.

“They did a fantastic job evacuating the ship, and they gave us good guidance so we could quickly find our way around on board,” Gørløv said.

Rønne Port employees were also involved in the operation, directing emergency vehicles along the access road leading to the ship.

The relatively short period between the alarm being raised and the fire being extinguished limited the duration of the emergency, although the evacuation involved more than 300 people.

Investigation into cause of fire

With the fire extinguished and passengers accounted for, attention turned to establishing how the blaze began.

Amadea ship

Bornholm Police launched an investigation into the cause of the fire in the linen-storage compartment. Emergency personnel and investigators remained at the terminal while the affected section of the vessel was examined.

Amadea is operated by German cruise company Phoenix Reisen and sails under the flag of the Bahamas. The vessel is approximately 193 metres long, has a gross tonnage of around 29,000 and can accommodate about 600 passengers.

The incident occurred while Amadea was berthed at Rønne, the principal port on the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm.

Norwegian Jade Helps Firefighters After Fire Breaks Out on Dock

When you’re on a cruise ship, the last thing you want to see is a fire. For passengers on Norwegian Jade, the view and smell of smoke was a little too close for comfort as the 2,400-guest ship was docked in Whittier, Alaska.

But the brave crew of Norwegian Jade stepped up and helped firefighters tackle the blaze as it spread across the dock from the tour boat that caught fire.

Several dramatic videos of the incident have been posted on social media, showing just how close the fire was before the ship had to leave the dock and use a different terminal.

The videos also show the heroic crew, stepping in to beat back the flames that persisted for about 45 minutes.

Barbara Mackessy shot several videos of the fire, showing the intensity of the flames and the crew spraying water across the deck to stop the spread.

Other videos also emerged of the crew fighting the fire before the ship pulled away from the dock.

Quick Action on the Upper Decks

The emergency broke out around 11:00 AM on September 14 when a fire erupted aboard the Klondike Express, a tour boat moored along the waterfront right next to the Norwegian Jade.

As the flames jumped from the tour boat onto the wooden pier of the Chugach Glacier Gateway Cruise Terminal, heavy black smoke began rolling directly toward the ship.

But rather than just standing by, members of the Norwegian Jade crew acted immediately. Equipped with high-powered marine fire hoses and deck monitors, crew members aimed heavy streams of water down onto the dock from the upper decks.

By soaking the pier and creating a protective water barrier, the crew fought back the flames, slowing the fire’s spread during the crucial first minutes before land-based crews could arrive.

Moving to Safety

Because the fire was right against the hull, the captain safely pulled the 93,500-ton vessel away from the pier and moved it into open water across the bay.

Whittier Fire, Girdwood Fire and Rescue, Anchorage Fire, and the U.S. Coast Guard soon took over to fully extinguish the remaining flames.

A social media post from The Anchorage Fire Department stated that there were no working hydrants in the area at the time of the fire and that ” an engine and three tenders [operated] in tandem to move 112,000 gallons of water”.

Some online wondered why the relatively new $80 million dock didn’t have any operable hydrants.

Zero Damage and No Injuries

Despite how dramatic the whole thing looked, the crew’s quick thinking paid off. The Norwegian Jade suffered no damage, and no injuries were reported among the passengers, crew, or ground personnel.

Once the harbor was secured, the ship was able to dock at Whittier’s secondary terminal and allow passengers who were still in port to be able to get back on the ship.

On behalf of Cruise Fever: hats off to the brave crew of Norwegian Jade for stepping up and keeping everyone safe.

13 Young Passengers Charged After Fight On Costa Smeralda

Thirteen passengers aged between 18 and 20 have been charged following a violent fight aboard Costa Cruises’ Costa Smeralda during an overnight sailing to Palermo.

The Costa Smeralda cruise ship docked in a port on a clear day, its white and blue balconies visible against the backdrop of a blue sky with fluffy clouds and distant mountains.

The confrontation involved two groups of young passengers and reportedly began close to the ship’s nightclub before spreading through corridors and into an elevator area. Italian media reported that tables, chairs and other objects were used during the disturbance.

One passenger was taken to hospital for medical examinations after the incident, although serious injuries were reportedly ruled out.

Fight Spreads Through Cruise Ship

The altercation took place while Costa Smeralda was sailing between Naples and Palermo. According to Italian reports, one group involved was from the Lecce area in southern Italy and had joined the cruise in Civitavecchia, while the other was from Sicily and had embarked in Palermo.

The dispute is reported to have started after a comment was directed towards a young woman near the ship’s nightclub. What began as a verbal argument subsequently escalated into a physical confrontation.

The disturbance did not remain confined to the area where it began. Those involved moved through the ship’s corridors before the confrontation continued near the elevators.

During the incident, one young passenger was reportedly attacked while lying unconscious on the floor. Crew members intervened to bring the situation under control and authorities were notified.

Video footage of the disturbance subsequently circulated online, showing parts of the confrontation aboard the ship.

Police Review Surveillance Footage

Officers from the Maritime Border Police began investigating after Costa Smeralda arrived in Palermo.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from aboard the ship to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the identities of those believed to have been involved.

Thirteen passengers, all aged between 18 and 20, were subsequently reported to the authorities in connection with aggravated brawling. Italian reports published on 15th September 2026 confirmed the investigation and the action taken against the young passengers.

The passenger who required medical attention was transported to hospital for checks following the confrontation. Medical examinations reportedly found no serious injuries.

Costa Smeralda is one of the largest ships in the Costa Cruises fleet. The Italian-flagged vessel measures approximately 337 metres in length and operates Mediterranean cruises that include regular calls at Italian ports.

Retired Air Force General Named Godmother For Icon Class Ship

Royal Caribbean International has selected retired U.S. Air Force General Lori J. Robinson as godmother of Legend of the Seas, the cruise line’s third Icon Class vessel.

Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas Godmother

The historic appointment celebrates Robinson’s trailblazing military career whilst honouring American veterans through a naming ceremony scheduled for Veterans Day 2026.

General Robinson’s selection marks a significant moment for both Royal Caribbean and the wider cruise industry. The retired four-star general served the United States Air Force with distinction for 37 years, beginning her career in 1981 and continuing through her retirement in 2018.

During her decorated service, Robinson shattered numerous glass ceilings and achieved several historic firsts within the American military establishment. Her leadership positions included serving as commander of Pacific Air Forces from 2014 to 2016, overseeing operations across one of the world’s most strategically important regions.

Robinson’s most groundbreaking achievement came when she became the first woman to lead a major combatant command in U.S. military history. This unprecedented appointment demonstrated not only her exceptional capabilities but also represented a watershed moment for women in military service worldwide.

Veterans Day Ceremony Adds Profound Significance

The naming ceremony for Legend of the Seas will take place on 11th November 2026 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida – a date that carries deep meaning beyond the maritime tradition.

This date coincides with Veterans Day, the annual American observance honouring all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The timing transforms what would already be a significant event into something far more meaningful. By scheduling the ceremony on Veterans Day, Royal Caribbean creates an opportunity to recognise generations of service members whilst celebrating its newest vessel.

“I am deeply honoured to be named godmother of Legend of the Seas and take part in such a special tradition for Royal Caribbean alongside my family,” Robinson stated.

“Having the ship’s naming ceremony on Veterans Day makes this especially meaningful to me, and I look forward to recognising the generations of men and women who have served.”

Legend Of The Seas Journey To Fort Lauderdale

Legend of the Seas officially entered service on 4th July 2026, another symbolically significant American date. The 248,663-gross-tonne vessel spent its inaugural season sailing European waters, showcasing Royal Caribbean’s latest innovations to Mediterranean and Northern European markets.

The ship is scheduled to reposition from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale with a 13-night transatlantic crossing departing 25th October 2026. This voyage will transport Legend across the Atlantic Ocean, arriving at its Florida homeport on 7th November 2026 – just four days before the naming ceremony.

Following its arrival, Legend will operate one preview cruise before the official naming event. This 3-night voyage departs 8th November and includes a call at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s exclusive private island destination in the Bahamas, before returning at 6:00 a.m. on 11th November, perfectly timed ahead of the ceremony.

The Godmother Tradition In Maritime History

The Godmother Tradition In Maritime History

The tradition of selecting a godmother for a ship dates back centuries in maritime culture. This custom carries deep significance within seafaring communities, with the godmother serving as a symbolic guardian who bestows blessings and good fortune upon the vessel, its crew, and all who sail aboard.

As godmother, General Robinson will perform the ceremonial duties during the naming event, officially blessing Legend of the Seas and wishing prosperity for all future voyages. She will be joined by Royal Caribbean executives, crew members, and specially invited guests at the Florida port for this momentous occasion.

The godmother role transcends mere ceremonial function – it creates a lasting bond between the individual and the ship. Many cruise lines maintain ongoing relationships with their godmothers, who often return for milestone celebrations and special events throughout a vessel’s service life.

Distinguished Company Among Icon Class Godparents

Distinguished Company Among Icon Class Godparents

General Robinson joins an impressive roster of godparents for Royal Caribbean’s revolutionary Icon Class series. Each selection reflects the cruise line’s commitment to partnering with individuals who embody excellence, achievement, and inspiration across diverse fields.

Icon of the Seas, the class’s inaugural vessel which launched in January 2024, named international football legend Lionel Messi as godfather.

The Argentine superstar, widely considered amongst the greatest footballers of all time, brought global attention to Royal Caribbean’s largest ship when it debuted.

Star of the Seas, the second Icon Class vessel which entered service earlier in 2026, selected Kellie Gerardi as godmother. The research astronaut and science communicator represents the intersection of exploration, innovation, and inspiration – values that align closely with Royal Caribbean’s brand identity.

Legend Of The Seas Specifications And Features

Legend Of The Seas Specifications And Features

Legend of the Seas represents the third iteration of Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Icon Class design. At 248,663 gross tonnes, the vessel continues the line’s tradition of building progressively larger and more innovative ships whilst introducing refinements based on operational experience from its sister ships.

The ship accommodates 5,610 guests at double occupancy, offering one of the industry’s highest passenger capacities. This scale allows Royal Caribbean to deliver an extraordinary range of dining venues, entertainment options, and recreational facilities that would be impossible on smaller vessels.

Legend incorporates the signature features that have made the Icon Class celebrated within the cruise industry. These include multiple neighbourhood concepts, revolutionary entertainment venues, diverse dining options ranging from casual to specialty restaurants, and cutting-edge recreational facilities that push the boundaries of what’s possible at sea.

The vessel’s design emphasises both energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, incorporating the latest technologies to minimise its ecological footprint whilst delivering an exceptional guest experience. Royal Caribbean has invested heavily in sustainable cruising initiatives across its fleet, and the Icon Class represents the pinnacle of these efforts.

Fort Lauderdale Caribbean Programme Launches

Fort Lauderdale Caribbean Programme Launches

Following the naming ceremony, Legend of the Seas will operate a special 3-night “Legend Naming Cruise” departing 11th November. This celebratory voyage offers guests the unique opportunity to sail aboard the newly christened vessel immediately after the official ceremony, creating a memorable connection to the historic event.

The ship will then commence its regular Caribbean programme on 14th November 2026. Legend will sail a series of Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale throughout the winter season, offering guests access to the region’s most popular destinations and Royal Caribbean’s private island experiences.

This deployment strategy mirrors the successful approach Royal Caribbean has employed with Icon and Star of the Seas. By positioning these massive vessels in the Caribbean market, the cruise line ensures strong demand from both North American cruise enthusiasts and international travellers seeking warm-weather getaways.

Legend’s Fort Lauderdale season will continue through April 2027, when the vessel is scheduled to reposition back to Barcelona. This transatlantic crossing will mark the beginning of Legend’s second European summer season, establishing a pattern of seasonal deployments that maximises the ship’s appeal across different markets.

Industry Impact And Future Implications

General Robinson’s appointment as godmother reflects Royal Caribbean’s evolving approach to these high-profile selections. Whilst cruise lines have traditionally chosen celebrities, royalty, or company executives for godparent roles, there’s growing recognition of the value in partnering with individuals whose achievements extend beyond entertainment.

By selecting a retired military general – and particularly one who broke such significant barriers during her service – Royal Caribbean makes a statement about the values it wishes to project.

This choice resonates particularly strongly given current conversations about diversity, leadership, and breaking through traditional limitations.

The timing of the ceremony on Veterans Day also demonstrates sophisticated brand positioning. Royal Caribbean operates in a competitive market where differentiation matters, and creating meaningful connections with specific communities can generate lasting loyalty and positive associations.

For Legend of the Seas, the naming ceremony represents an important milestone in the vessel’s operational life. Whilst the ship has already been welcoming guests since July, the official naming with its godmother blessing provides a formal christening that maritime tradition considers essential for a vessel’s good fortune.
