Carnival Forced To Quash April Fool’s Rumours As Guests Fall For Fake Announcements


Carnival Cruise Line has been forced to respond to a wave of April Fool’s Day hoaxes after convincing fake announcements left some guests questioning whether major onboard traditions and loyalty benefits were being scrapped.

The confusion prompted the line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, to step in and clarify the truth as misleading posts circulated widely online on 1st April.

One of the most convincing hoaxes took the form of an official-looking letter, complete with Carnival Cruise Line branding and a Miami headquarters address. The message claimed that the popular guest-led activity of hiding and finding “cruise ducks” would be banned with immediate effect.

The fabricated letter cited environmental concerns, suggesting that the small plastic ducks could have “unintended environmental impacts” on marine ecosystems and destinations visited by the ships. It also referenced sustainability efforts, adding to its apparent credibility.

However, despite its polished appearance and a signature attributed to company president Christine Duffy, the message was entirely false. Some versions of the image omitted the small “April Fools!” line at the bottom, making it even more believable.

The letter also circulated with Royal Caribbean branding on some other Facebook groups.

Heald quickly reassured concerned guests that there was no truth to the claim.

“No, this is completely not true. Somebody posted this for the April 1 thing. Hide the ducks, we love it,” he confirmed.

Cruise ducks have become a widely embraced tradition across the industry, with passengers hiding and discovering decorated rubber ducks as part of a light-hearted onboard game. Carnival has previously leaned into the trend, even introducing a duck mascot on select sailings.

Cruise Ducks Rumour Causes Stir

The rapid spread of the fake letter highlights how easily well-crafted hoaxes can gain traction, particularly when they tap into real industry topics such as sustainability.

Carnival Cruise Line, like many operators, has placed increasing emphasis on environmental responsibility in recent years, which likely made the claim appear plausible to some guests.

Despite the brief panic, the cruise line has given no indication that it plans to restrict the activity, which remains a popular way for guests to interact and add a personal touch to their holidays.

Loyalty Programme Hoax Sparks Further Confusion

A second rumour proved more concerning for some loyal customers, as it suggested that Carnival Cruise Line was preparing to reverse major changes to its loyalty scheme.

The false announcement claimed the company would abandon its upcoming Carnival Rewards programme and return to the traditional VIFP system, which is based on the number of days sailed rather than onboard spending.

According to the hoax, the supposed reversal was driven by guest feedback and could even include a hybrid model combining both systems.

Heald firmly dismissed the claim, making it clear that the information was entirely fabricated.

“I am not going to spend any more time answering this question because so many have been falling for this April [fool] post,” he said.

Carnival first revealed plans for its new spend-based rewards programme in June 2025, following years of speculation about potential changes. While the line has made some adjustments since the announcement, there has been no suggestion that it intends to scrap the new system altogether.

April Fool’s Tradition Continues

While the rumours caused some temporary confusion, they also underline how engaged Carnival’s customer base remains, with many quick to seek clarification directly from Heald.

The brand ambassador himself also joined in the spirit of the day, jokingly announcing Cleveland as a new Carnival homeport, a long-running gag familiar to his followers.

Though clearly tongue-in-cheek, the prank was far less convincing than the circulating hoaxes, and unlikely to fool experienced cruisers.

The episode serves as a reminder for guests to double-check unusual announcements, particularly on 1st April, when even the most official-looking claims may not be what they seem.
