Carnival Cruise Line has officially completed a major redevelopment of RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, marking the biggest changes to the private Bahamian destination since it first opened nearly 30 years ago.
The cruise line celebrated the completion of the project on 1st June 2026 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. The extensive upgrade introduces new guest facilities, expanded beachfront amenities and, most notably, a new pier that enables larger ships to call at the island.
The development addresses one of Half Moon Cay’s most significant operational limitations. Previously, many guests had to be transferred ashore by tender boats, which could be affected by weather and sea conditions. With the new pier now operational, ships can dock directly at the destination, allowing more vessels to visit and improving the overall guest experience.
Among the biggest beneficiaries are Carnival’s Excel-class ships, including Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, which were previously unable to make regular calls because of tendering restrictions.
New Amenities Added Across The Island
Guests arriving at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay will find a range of new facilities designed to enhance beach days on the island.
The expanded beachfront now includes additional complimentary loungers and umbrellas, alongside upgraded premium options such as cabanas and daybeds for visitors seeking a more private retreat.
Several new food and beverage venues have also opened as part of the redevelopment. Orchid Beach Grill and Hibiscus Beach Grill now serve buffet-style meals, while Luna Tide Beach Bar, Stay Awhile Beach Shack and Lil’ Tiki Bar provide additional locations for drinks and light refreshments throughout the day.
Transportation around the island has also been improved. A new tram system helps guests move between key areas, while the newly introduced Papaya Pathway offers a scenic walking route for those wishing to explore on foot.
Carnival also completed enhancements on sections of the island’s south side, including refreshed design features and upgrades to existing dining and beverage facilities.
Speaking during the opening celebrations, Duffy said: “RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay’s natural beauty has always made it a favorite for our guests and with the new pier, more ships can now easily access this incredible destination.”
She added: “We’re excited that more guests than ever will be able to experience the stunning beachfront and turquoise waters.”
The first ship to utilise the completed facilities was Carnival Sunrise, which arrived at 8 am on 1st June before departing later that afternoon.
Additional calls followed immediately, with Carnival Sunshine scheduled to arrive from Norfolk on 2nd June, while Carnival Dream and Carnival Pride were due to visit on 3rd June from Miami and Baltimore respectively.
Private Destination Investments Continue To Accelerate
The completion of the Half Moon Cay expansion comes as cruise operators continue investing heavily in private destinations throughout the Caribbean.
While competitors such as Norwegian Cruise Line have been expanding Great Stirrup Cay and Royal Caribbean International has successfully developed its Perfect Day at CocoCay concept, Half Moon Cay has long been considered one of the pioneers of the modern private island experience.
Located on Little San Salvador Island, the destination opened in December 1997 after being developed by Holland America Line. It quickly became known for its expansive white-sand beaches and relatively untouched natural environment.
Today, the destination is shared by several brands within Carnival Corporation & plc, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line. According to Carnival, 22 ships across its fleet currently call at the destination from homeports throughout the United States.
The redevelopment forms part of Carnival Corporation’s broader Paradise Collection portfolio, which includes Celebration Key on Grand Bahama, opened in 2025, and Mahogany Bay in Honduras.
Plans to modernise Half Moon Cay were first announced in 2024, with the company stressing that improvements would be made while preserving the natural character that has made the island one of the Caribbean’s most popular cruise destinations.
