Lowest-Scoring Cruise Ships Of 2026 Revealed

Norwegian Dawn has recorded the lowest CDC sanitation score among cruise ships inspected so far in 2026, falling below the agency’s passing standard during an unannounced inspection in March.

The Norwegian Cruise Line ship received a score of 84 during its inspection on 29th March 2026. Under the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vessel Sanitation Program, a score of 86 or above is considered satisfactory, while 85 or below is classed as unsatisfactory.

Norwegian Dawn

Norwegian Dawn was the only ship among the seven lowest-scoring vessels highlighted in the latest review to fall below the passing threshold.

Carnival Breeze, Kydon and National Geographic Sea Lion each scored 86, meaning they passed by the narrowest possible margin. Sun Princess, MSC Meraviglia and Amadea each received scores of 89.

According to current CDC records, Carnival Breeze’s 86 was recorded on 14th May, Kydon’s on 30th March and National Geographic Sea Lion’s on 21st June. Sun Princess was inspected on 15th February, MSC Meraviglia on 10th March and Amadea on 10th February.

The inspection scores reflect conditions found on board at a particular point in time and can vary significantly between inspections.

Carnival Breeze is a notable example. The Carnival Cruise Line ship earned a perfect score of 100 during an earlier inspection before receiving its subsequent score of 86.

What CDC Inspectors Look For On Cruise Ships

The CDC conducts inspections through its Vessel Sanitation Program, which is designed to help prevent and control public health problems aboard cruise ships operating within the programme’s jurisdiction.

Inspections assess whether ships are complying with public health standards across numerous areas of their operation. These include medical facilities, drinking water systems, swimming pools and whirlpools, food preparation areas, dining rooms, children’s facilities, accommodation, ventilation and public spaces.

A lower inspection result does not automatically mean passengers on a ship are unsafe or that an illness outbreak is occurring. Instead, the score represents inspectors’ assessment of the ship against the CDC’s sanitation standards at the time they boarded.

CDC Cruise Inspection

Norwegian Cruise Line subsequently submitted a corrective action report to the CDC detailing measures taken following Norwegian Dawn’s failed inspection.

Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, an infection prevention expert and epidemiologist affiliated with Penn State College of Medicine, has previously stressed the importance of the Vessel Sanitation Program.

“The federal government’s Vessel Sanitation Program, established in 1975 to work with the cruise industry to protect travelers’ health, is critical for the health and safety of passengers, staff and the locations that cruise ships visit,” Macgregor-Skinner said.

He added:

“Ships participating in the VSP can expect two unannounced inspections every year, with a focus on medical facilities, potable water systems, swimming pools and whirlpool baths, galleys and dining rooms, child activity centers, cabins, ventilation systems and common areas,”

The Vessel Sanitation Program dates back to 1975 and was established after gastrointestinal illness outbreaks aboard cruise ships became a significant public health concern. Today, the programme combines inspections with illness surveillance and responses to outbreaks on ships entering the United States from foreign ports.

The nature of cruise ships means preventing the spread of illness remains a significant operational priority. Thousands of passengers and crew can share dining areas, entertainment venues, lifts, handrails and other communal facilities during a voyage.

Brian Sansoni, senior vice president of communications at the American Cleaning Institute, previously said:

“Without strong cleaning and hygiene practices, germs can spread quickly, increasing the risk of illness among passengers and crew,” he added.

Macgregor-Skinner has also cautioned against assuming that the greater availability of cruise ship health information means illnesses are inherently more common at sea.

“It is very important not to confuse the wider availability of cruise health data with a higher incidence rate on cruise ships compared to settings like restaurants, hotels and planes,” he said.

Cruise ships operating within the CDC programme are subject to specific reporting requirements for gastrointestinal illnesses, giving federal authorities considerably more visibility of cases occurring at sea.

Several Cruise Ship Illness Outbreaks Reported In 2026

Sanitation inspection results and illness outbreaks are separate measures, and a ship receiving a low inspection score does not necessarily go on to experience an outbreak.

The CDC separately publishes gastrointestinal illness outbreaks when ships within its jurisdiction meet its reporting criteria. Generally, an outbreak is published when at least 3% of passengers or crew report gastrointestinal illness symptoms to the ship’s medical team during a voyage, although the agency can also publish other incidents considered significant to public health.

As of the CDC’s latest published 2026 outbreak data, affected vessels have included Ruby Princess, Caribbean Princess, Star Princess, Oceania Cruises’ Insignia, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Mariner and Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Sea Bird.

Virus on a cruise ship

Norovirus was identified in several of those outbreaks, including cases aboard Ruby Princess, Caribbean Princess, Star Princess and National Geographic Sea Bird. Other incidents involved E. coli, while the cause of some National Geographic Sea Bird outbreaks had not been identified in the CDC’s published data.

The vessels appearing on the outbreak list are not the same as the ships with the lowest sanitation scores, reinforcing the distinction between an environmental health inspection and an outbreak investigation.

At the opposite end of the inspection rankings, dozens of ships have achieved perfect results during 2026.

Ships receiving scores of 100 have included Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, Carnival Celebration, Celebrity Apex, Disney Dream, Norwegian Viva and Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth.

The CDC’s current Green Sheet, which shows the most recent inspection result for vessels within its jurisdiction, confirms perfect scores for those ships, alongside numerous other vessels that have achieved the maximum result.

With scores capable of changing considerably from one inspection to the next, the results provide a snapshot of sanitation conditions aboard a ship rather than a permanent rating of the vessel or cruise line.

Norwegian Cruise Line Launches New Transfer Service For Ravenna Port

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced a dedicated transfer service to Ravenna’s train station after guests reported waiting up to two hours for taxis at the Italian cruise port.

The new option comes as the cruise line addresses ongoing transportation challenges at Porto Corsini. Limited taxi availability has created significant delays for passengers attempting to reach onward connections.

Norwegian Pearl

The transfer service, priced at $23 per person, aims to provide a reliable alternative for guests departing Norwegian Pearl and other NCL vessels calling at the port.

Norwegian Cruise Line issued a notice to Norwegian Pearl passengers on 18th August 2026, acknowledging the persistent transportation difficulties at Ravenna.

The communication highlighted that guests on previous sailings had experienced waits of up to two hours for taxis due to insufficient vehicle availability at the port.

The situation has proved particularly challenging for passengers heading to Ravenna’s train station. This station serves as a crucial connection point for travellers continuing to Venice and other destinations throughout Italy and beyond.

The cruise line recognised that these extended waits, often without adequate seating or shelter, were creating an unacceptable experience for guests at the conclusion of their cruises.

New Transfer Service Offers Guaranteed Transportation

In response to passenger feedback and the documented challenges, Norwegian Cruise Line has opened bookings for a new dedicated transfer service from the cruise terminal to Ravenna’s train station.

The service is priced at $23 per person and provides a scheduled, guaranteed option for reaching the station without the uncertainty of taxi availability.

According to Norwegian Cruise Line’s announcement, the average taxi fare from Porto Corsini to the Ravenna train station costs approximately €50, or roughly $58. For solo travellers and couples, the new transfer represents a significant cost saving compared to hiring a private taxi.

However, the pricing structure differs fundamentally from traditional taxi services.

Whilst a taxi fare covers the entire vehicle regardless of passenger count, Norwegian’s transfer charges per person. This means larger families or groups might find a taxi more economical if they can secure one without a lengthy wait.

Norwegian Pearl’s Current Mediterranean Deployment

Norwegian Pearl's Current Mediterranean Deployment

Norwegian Pearl, measuring 93,530 gross tonnes, is currently operating a series of seven-night, one-way cruises between Piraeus, Greece, and Ravenna, Italy.

The particular sailing referenced in the notice departed from Piraeus on 16th August and features an impressive Mediterranean itinerary.

The voyage calls at some of the region’s most sought-after destinations, including Santorini and Katakolon in Greece, Corfu, Montenegro’s stunning Kotor, Croatia’s historic Dubrovnik, and Slovenia’s Koper before concluding in Ravenna on 23rd August.

Guests aboard the ship can book the new transfer service up until noon on 21st August, when Norwegian Pearl will be docked in Dubrovnik.

This series of cruises will continue through 1st November 2026, after which Norwegian Pearl will reposition across the Atlantic to Philadelphia. From her new homeport, the vessel will operate cruises to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic throughout the winter season.

Geographical Challenges Of Porto Corsini

The fundamental challenge facing cruise passengers at Ravenna stems from the port’s geographical location and its relationship to Venice, the city most travellers associate with the region.

Despite being marketed in connection with Venice, Ravenna sits approximately 90 miles from the famous lagoon city, creating significant logistical complications for passengers.

Cruise ships actually dock at Porto Corsini, the industrial port serving Ravenna, which is located roughly eight miles from Ravenna’s train station and approximately 12 miles from Ravenna’s airport.

For passengers hoping to reach Venice directly by road, the journey can take up to three hours depending on traffic conditions.

The train station therefore becomes the preferred option for many travellers, as rail connections offer a more efficient route to Venice and other major Italian cities.

This concentration of demand on train services explains why the taxi shortage at the port has proved so problematic for cruise passengers.

History Of Marketing Confusion Around Ravenna

History Of Marketing Confusion Around Ravenna

The geographical distance between Ravenna and Venice has previously generated controversy within the cruise industry.

In 2023, Royal Caribbean faced sanctions from the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority for its interchangeable use of the two city names in marketing materials.

The UK regulatory agency ruled that Royal Caribbean’s practice of referring to Ravenna as Venice, or suggesting the ports were functionally equivalent, constituted misleading advertising.

The decision highlighted how cruise passengers might book sailings based on a desire to visit Venice, only to discover they would dock 90 miles away with limited transportation options.

This ruling underscored the importance of clear communication about port locations and the realistic transportation times required to reach advertised destinations.

The ongoing challenges with taxi availability at Porto Corsini have only amplified these concerns about accessibility.

Recent Infrastructure Delays Impact Port Operations

Beyond the transportation challenges facing departing passengers, Ravenna’s cruise port has also contended with infrastructure limitations that have affected vessel scheduling.

Recent construction delays at Porto Corsini have reduced the number of ships able to dock simultaneously at the facility.

These delays forced Royal Caribbean to make last-minute changes to Brilliance of the Seas’ deployment earlier this summer.

The vessel’s seven-night sailing originally scheduled to depart from Ravenna on 10th August 2026 had to be relocated to Trieste due to the construction-related docking limitations.

Such disruptions create additional complications for cruise lines attempting to maintain consistent itineraries in the region and for passengers who have made travel arrangements based on specific embarkation and debarkation ports.

The infrastructure challenges also place additional pressure on available ground transportation when ships do successfully dock.

Passenger Response To New Transfer Option

Cruise passengers have begun responding to Norwegian Cruise Line’s new transfer service, with many expressing relief at having a guaranteed transportation option.

One Facebook user commented enthusiastically about the addition, noting that “Ravenna cruise port is not for the leary traveller, it takes some work to get too, especially if you want to actually visit Venice before or after.”

The comment reflects a broader sentiment among experienced cruisers that Porto Corsini requires more planning and presents more challenges than many Mediterranean ports.

For less experienced travellers or those unfamiliar with the region’s geography, the lack of readily available transportation can create stress at what should be a smooth conclusion to their holiday.

The new transfer service allows passengers to confirm their onward transportation whilst still aboard the ship. This provides peace of mind and eliminates the uncertainty of whether taxis will be available upon disembarkation.

This predictability is particularly valuable for passengers with fixed train reservations or flight connections that cannot be easily changed.

Norwegian’s Broader Ravenna Commitment

Norwegian Pearl represents just one element of Norwegian Cruise Line’s substantial commitment to Ravenna as a port of call and turnaround location.

The cruise line has deployed multiple vessels to the Italian port throughout the 2026 summer season, making the transportation solution relevant to thousands of passengers.

Norwegian Gem has also operated sailings between Civitavecchia and Ravenna, though recent reports indicate some itinerary modifications affecting these voyages.

Additionally, the 142,500-gross-tonne Norwegian Viva regularly includes Ravenna in her Mediterranean programme.

Norwegian Viva continues sailing nine- to ten-night itineraries that call at Ravenna through 14th October, representing a significant volume of passengers who will potentially benefit from the new transfer service.

The vessel’s modern amenities and larger capacity mean even more guests requiring ground transportation solutions at Porto Corsini.

With multiple Norwegian Cruise Line ships scheduled to continue calling at Ravenna throughout the autumn, the new transfer service could substantially improve the guest experience for thousands of passengers.

The initiative demonstrates how cruise lines must sometimes intervene directly in destination logistics when local infrastructure proves insufficient to handle cruise passenger volumes efficiently.

Existing airport transfer options to Venice’s Marco Polo Airport remain available for passengers requiring air connections, providing a comprehensive range of guaranteed transportation choices for guests concluding their Mediterranean cruise holidays at this sometimes challenging Italian port.

Cruise Line Cancels Around 40 Cruises Due To Ship Redeployment

Royal Caribbean is cancelling a large number of previously scheduled cruises from Los Angeles as part of a major redeployment that will send more capacity to Asia and Australia for the 2027-2028 season.

Around 40 West Coast sailings are understood to be affected by the changes, representing potential capacity for more than 150,000 passengers across the cancelled departures.

Ovation of the Seas

The ships involved are Navigator of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, both of which had been scheduled to operate significantly more cruises from Los Angeles in 2027 and early 2028.

Navigator of the Seas will instead remain in Asia for longer than originally planned, while Ovation of the Seas is being moved to Brisbane, Australia from November 2027.

Thousands of passengers who had already booked affected cruises are now being contacted by Royal Caribbean with rebooking and refund options.

The changes form part of what Royal Caribbean has described as its biggest Asia-Pacific deployment to date, with four ships set to operate across Australia and Asia during the expanded season.

Navigator Of The Seas Staying In Asia For Longer

Navigator of the Seas had originally been expected to return to North America in May 2027, including a transpacific sailing from Japan to California on 12th May 2027.

That cruise has now been cancelled.

Navigator of the Seas

Royal Caribbean told affected passengers:

“As we continue planning our Summer 2027 sailings, some itinerary adjustments have been necessary due to scheduling, port agreements, and other operational considerations.”

The email continued:

“As a result, Navigator of the Seas will be redeployed, and your May 12, 2027, sailing will no longer be available… To help with finding the new perfect getaway, we’ve outlined several alternative options that we hope will work for you and those in your party.”

Rather than returning to North America in spring 2027, Navigator of the Seas will remain based in Singapore through October 2027.

The ship is expected to operate predominantly two- to five-night cruises from Singapore, visiting destinations including Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

That will give Navigator of the Seas an approximately year-long deployment from Singapore beginning in October 2026.

The Voyager Class ship is still scheduled to return to Los Angeles later in 2027, with Mexican Riviera cruises planned between November 2027 and April 2028.

Passengers affected by the cancelled Navigator sailings are being offered several alternatives.

Royal Caribbean is allowing guests to move to selected voyages aboard Voyager of the Seas or Serenade of the Seas, with non-refundable deposit change fees waived and passengers moved to a comparable cabin at the prevailing fare.

Guests will still be responsible for any difference in cruise fare, taxes, fees and gratuities.

Some passengers are also being offered onboard credit depending on the length of their cruise and cabin category.

For cruises of six nights or longer, guests booked in suites or balcony cabins can receive $100 in onboard credit, while those booked in interior or ocean-view cabins can receive $50.

For sailings of five nights or fewer, the amounts are $50 for suites and balconies and $25 for interior and ocean-view accommodation.

Royal Caribbean is also offering reimbursement of up to $400 per person for qualifying non-refundable, pre-purchased transport change fees, which could include flights, railway tickets or rental cars.

Passengers can alternatively move to another Royal Caribbean cruise elsewhere in the fleet, with deposit change fees waived, although onboard credit is not included with that option.

Those who do not want to rebook can request a full refund, including any non-refundable deposit already paid.

Ovation Of The Seas Moving From Los Angeles To Brisbane

Ovation of the Seas is also being removed from a substantial portion of Royal Caribbean’s West Coast programme.

The Quantum Class ship began operating cruises from Los Angeles in June 2025 and had previously been scheduled to remain on the West Coast through April 2028.

Ovation of the Seas

Instead, Ovation of the Seas will move to Brisbane from November 2027 as Royal Caribbean expands its Australian operation.

The ship will operate cruises of between three and eight nights, including itineraries visiting Queensland and the South Pacific.

Among the new departures are four-night cruises from Brisbane to Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays.

The Australian deployment will also place Ovation of the Seas in the region as Royal Caribbean prepares to open Royal Beach Club Lelepa in Vanuatu, the cruise company’s first Royal Beach Club destination in the Southern Hemisphere.

Passengers booked on affected Ovation cruises from Los Angeles have started receiving cancellation notices.

One email sent to guests booked on a 22nd November 2027 sailing said:

“As we continue planning our Winter 2027-2028 sailings, some itinerary adjustments have been necessary due to scheduling, port agreements, and other operational considerations.”

It continued:

“As a result, Ovation of the Seas will be redeployed, and your November 22, 2027 sailing will no longer be available… To help with finding your new perfect getaway, we’ve outlined several alternative options that we hope will work for you and those in your party.”

For some affected passengers, Royal Caribbean is offering an alternative sailing aboard Navigator of the Seas departing Los Angeles on 29th November 2027.

Guests choosing the replacement cruise can move to a like-for-like cabin at the prevailing rate without paying a non-refundable deposit change fee, although they remain responsible for any difference in fares, taxes, fees, gratuities and other charges.

Passengers can also move to another Royal Caribbean sailing elsewhere in the fleet, although a comparable cabin at the same rate is not guaranteed under that option.

A full refund, including non-refundable deposits, is available to customers who decide not to rebook.

Royal Caribbean has advised affected guests that refunds will be sent back to the original method of payment.

“Any refunds due will be credited to your original form of payment within 14 business days after your decision, and refund times may vary depending on your financial institution,” the cruise line said in its email.

The redeployments leave Royal Caribbean with a considerably larger presence across Asia and Australia during the 2027-2028 season.

Ovation of the Seas will operate from Brisbane, while Anthem of the Seas is due to sail from Sydney.

Voyager of the Seas will operate a wider programme involving Brisbane, Sydney and ports in Asia, while Navigator of the Seas will spend much of its extended deployment based in Singapore.

Los Angeles will not disappear from Royal Caribbean’s schedule entirely. Navigator of the Seas is still expected to resume cruises from California from November 2027, but the removal of Ovation and the extended Asian deployment of Navigator will leave considerably fewer Royal Caribbean departures available to West Coast passengers than originally planned.

The disruption also highlights one of the risks of booking cruises particularly far in advance. Cruise lines regularly publish itineraries more than a year ahead, but ships can still be redeployed when companies alter capacity, respond to demand or make operational changes.

For passengers who had already secured flights, hotels or other travel arrangements around the cancelled departures, the scale of the changes could still create considerable disruption despite the rebooking and refund options being offered.

For Royal Caribbean, however, the redeployments represent a significant shift in capacity towards a region where the cruise line is preparing its largest Asia-Pacific programme yet.

Royal Caribbean Sued After Bathroom Panel Allegedly Injures Harmony Of The Seas Passenger

Royal Caribbean is facing a negligence lawsuit from a Texas passenger who claims she suffered a traumatic brain injury and spinal injuries after an access panel allegedly fell from behind a toilet and struck her on the head aboard Harmony of the Seas.

Aerial shot of the world's largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas.

LeAnn Carpenter filed the lawsuit in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida on 11th August 2026, seeking more than $75,000 in damages and requesting a jury trial.

The case relates to an incident during a seven-night Harmony of the Seas cruise from Port Canaveral in May 2025.

According to the complaint, Carpenter stopped to use a passenger restroom before attending a performance in the Royal Theater. While she was using the toilet, an access panel positioned behind it allegedly became dislodged without warning.

The panel is said to have struck Carpenter in the head with enough force to cause her to fall to the floor.

Her legal representatives, Aronfeld Trial Lawyers, allege that the panel should have been properly closed and secured to the wall.

The panel provided crew access to plumbing and other utilities located behind the toilet, meaning it could be opened for inspections, servicing, repairs and maintenance.

Carpenter’s lawsuit alleges that Royal Caribbean failed to ensure the panel was safely secured before passengers were allowed to use the restroom.

Royal Caribbean had not publicly commented on the allegations at the time of writing.

Passenger Sent Ashore For Medical Tests

Carpenter was given medical attention aboard Harmony of the Seas shortly after the incident.

According to the lawsuit, she experienced an altered state of awareness and memory loss following the impact. She was taken by wheelchair to the ship’s medical centre, where she was examined by a shipboard doctor, monitored by medical staff and given intravenous therapy.

She was subsequently sent ashore in Cozumel, Mexico, where further testing, including CT imaging of her head and skull, was carried out at Cozumel International Hospital.

It is not clear from the available information whether Carpenter was formally medically evacuated from the vessel or whether Cozumel was already a scheduled port of call.

Carpenter claims she has required continuing medical care since returning home, including diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, evaluations and further testing.

She says she was ultimately diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury accompanied by cognitive and psychological symptoms.

The symptoms alleged in the lawsuit include memory problems, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and a fear of driving.

Carpenter also claims she suffered spinal injuries resulting in continuing pain and other symptoms that have required further assessment and treatment.

The lawsuit contains three negligence counts against Royal Caribbean, covering alleged failures to remedy the hazardous condition, warn Carpenter about it and liability for the actions of employees or representatives responsible for the access panel.

Harmony of the Seas

Her lawyers argue there are several possible explanations for how the alleged hazard arose.

The complaint claims that a crew member may have previously opened the panel for maintenance and failed to secure it correctly, or that the panel itself could have been defective or damaged and should have been identified and repaired.

It further argues that because the alleged problem was concealed behind the panel, Carpenter had no reasonable way of knowing that it was not secured before using the restroom.

The lawsuit also claims Royal Caribbean is vicariously liable under general maritime law for any negligence by employees or representatives who inspected, serviced, repaired or otherwise handled the panel.

Royal Caribbean’s current US cruise contract requires written notice of personal injury claims within six months and generally requires any lawsuit to be filed within one year of the injury. It also specifies the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida for applicable disputes involving US cruises.

In Carpenter’s case, the contractual filing deadline was reportedly extended to 12th August 2026, with the lawsuit filed one day earlier.

No trial date has yet been set.

Royal Caribbean Facing Other Passenger Injury Claims

Carpenter’s case is not the only recent passenger injury lawsuit involving Royal Caribbean.

In another case filed in 2026, Florida passenger Colleen Parson accused the cruise line of negligence after she allegedly tripped over a mobility scooter while walking through a crowded casino aboard Jewel of the Seas in June 2025.

Parson claimed another passenger bumped into her, causing her to fall over the scooter and suffer a serious wrist fracture that required surgery. She sought more than $75,000 in damages.

Royal Caribbean denied responsibility in that case and argued that the scooter was an open and obvious condition that Parson should have seen.

The company has also faced a separate wrongful death lawsuit over the death of Michael Virgil aboard Navigator of the Seas in December 2024. His fiancée alleged that Virgil had been served at least 33 alcoholic drinks before becoming agitated and later being restrained by security personnel.

That lawsuit alleges negligence by Royal Caribbean in the service of alcohol and the way the incident was handled. Royal Caribbean did not immediately comment publicly on the lawsuit when it was filed.

The allegations in each case are separate, and the filing of a lawsuit does not establish that Royal Caribbean was negligent.

Harmony of the Seas, a 226,963-gross-ton cruise ship, continues to operate from Port Canaveral on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries, with no indication that the lawsuit has affected normal passenger operations.

Two Cruise Passengers Arrested At Port Canaveral After Alleged Onboard Fight Involving Child

Two cruise passengers were taken into custody after arriving at Port Canaveral following an alleged violent altercation onboard their ship that involved a nine-year-old child.

Gannon Jacox, 29, and Brooklyn Hicks, 28, were arrested on Saturday, 15th August 2026 and booked into the Brevard County Jail on a series of charges following the incident.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey publicised the arrests on social media, saying the confrontation began after Jacox and Hicks were allegedly arguing loudly onboard an unidentified cruise ship.

According to Ivey, another passenger asked the couple to keep the noise down, but the request allegedly escalated the situation rather than calming it.

Hicks is accused of confronting the other guests while Jacox recorded what was happening on his mobile phone. The sheriff said Jacox also verbally encouraged Hicks during the confrontation.

The situation then allegedly moved inside the other passengers’ accommodation.

“The suspects then pushed their way into the victim’s room, which included a 9-year-old child that was inside the room,” Ivey described. “As a fight ensued Jacox ends up hitting all 3 people (including the child) and Hicks was just swinging, hoping one would land.”

Gannon Jacox and Brooklyn Hicks Arrested Passengers

No injuries were reported among the three alleged victims, according to Ivey. Jacox, however, sustained an injury to his right eye.

The sheriff also indicated that alcohol appeared to have played a part in events. Exactly where the original argument began onboard has not been disclosed, nor has the cruise line or ship involved been publicly identified.

Pair Face Multiple Charges Following Arrest

Hicks was booked into the Brevard County Jail at 1.41pm on 15th August, while Jacox was booked later that day at 7.55pm.

Hicks was booked on two counts, including felony burglary with battery and a misdemeanour battery touch/strike charge. Her total bond was listed at $6,000.

Jacox, meanwhile, was booked on four counts. They included two felony burglary with assault charges, a felony charge of child abuse without great bodily harm and a misdemeanour battery touch/strike charge. His combined bonds totalled $31,000.

Both remained listed in custody following their arrests.

Ivey, who frequently uses humour when discussing arrests on the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office’s social media channels, described their detention as “a very expensive shore excursion to Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge.”

“Hopefully they enjoy their extended stay at their unplanned destination with close quarter sleeping arrangements, communal showers, no drink packages and of course no excursions!” he quipped.

The sheriff’s public account of the incident identified Jacox and Hicks as the suspects, although the allegations against them will ultimately have to be determined through the legal process.

Cruise Ship Involved Has Not Been Identified

Authorities have not named the cruise ship where the alleged confrontation occurred, making it impossible to determine which cruise line the pair had been travelling with based solely on the information released by the sheriff.

Aerial view of a Carnival cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral, Florida, with the vast expanse of the port infrastructure visible in the background, illustrating the scale and operation of a major cruise ship port.

However, Port Canaveral’s official schedule shows four cruise ships were at the Florida homeport on Saturday, 15th August 2026: Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Treasure, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras and Carnival Freedom.

Adventure of the Seas was scheduled to arrive at 5.15am and depart at 4pm, while Disney Treasure was scheduled in port between 5.45am and 4.45pm. Mardi Gras was listed from 6am until 3.30pm, and Carnival Freedom was due alongside from 6.45am until 3.30pm. All four were operating as homeport vessels rather than making ordinary ports of call.

That does not establish that the alleged incident occurred on any particular one of the four ships. Neither Ivey nor the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office identified the vessel or cruise operator involved.

The arrests are another reminder that incidents occurring at sea can continue to have consequences after a passenger steps ashore. Cruise lines can cooperate with law enforcement when authorities are waiting at a homeport, while passengers involved in serious incidents may also face separate action from the operator, potentially including removal from a sailing or restrictions on future cruises.

Disney Cruise Line Reveals Disney Believe Details And First Look At New Ship Class

Disney Cruise Line has used its latest D23 showcase to reveal new details about Disney Believe and offer the first glimpse of an entirely new class of ships that will begin joining the fleet in 2029.

The announcements provide a clearer picture of both the cruise line’s immediate expansion and what will follow once its current generation of Wish-class ships is complete.

Disney Believe Stern Figures

Disney Believe, which is scheduled to debut in late 2027, will become the fourth vessel in the Wish class. Disney has now confirmed several of the characters and design elements that will feature prominently across the ship, including Tinker Bell, Moana and characters from Toy Story.

At the same time, Disney Cruise Line confirmed that the three ships due to arrive from 2029 will form an entirely new class rather than extending the existing Wish-class design.

The new generation of vessels will be positioned between Disney’s smaller classic ships and its newer, larger vessels, a move intended to give the cruise line greater flexibility when choosing destinations and developing future itineraries.

Disney Believe To Feature Tinker Bell, Moana And Toy Story

Disney Believe will carry a theme centred around “promise and possibilities”, with characters selected to reflect ideas of magic, adventure and believing in oneself.

Tinker Bell, from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 1953 film Peter Pan, will feature in the ship’s bow artwork.

The hand-painted filigree design will place Tinker Bell at its centre while also incorporating silhouettes of Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael, Captain Hook and Smee.

Inside the ship, the Grand Hall will be themed around Moana.

Disney Believe Atrium Figures

A bronze cast statue of the character will serve as the centrepiece of the space, accompanied by Pua and Heihei. Concept artwork shows Moana looking towards the horizon in an adventurous pose.

The surrounding Grand Hall design will continue the theme with wave-inspired details on the walls, a subtle water pattern incorporated into the carpet and Polynesian influences elsewhere in the space.

Disney has also chosen Toy Story for Disney Believe’s stern sculpture.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear will appear to be completing the ship’s name using oversized yellow crayons, extending Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of placing character sculptures on the sterns of its vessels.

“This ship celebrates belief in magic, family, the power of nature, and belief in yourself,” said Claire Weiss, Portfolio Executive Creative Director of Walt Disney Imagineering. “And all the stories we tell onboard will be tied together by the core Disney notion of believing in something fantastical.”

One particularly noticeable change will be the lettering used for the ship’s name on the stern.

Rather than using the familiar script-style font seen across much of the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Believe will carry its name in large, angled block lettering inspired by Toy Story.

The choice ties the ship’s name directly into the stern artwork, although it also makes Disney Believe visually different from the other vessels in the fleet.

Reaction among Disney Cruise Line fans has been mixed, with some welcoming the additional Toy Story reference and others preferring a consistent fleet-wide appearance.

“As part of the fleet as a whole I’m not a fan of the font, but as a stand alone ship I think it’s sweet and a nice homage to Toy Story,” one guest posted on Facebook.

Disney Believe is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Steel cutting for the vessel began on 8th August 2025, while Disney confirmed the ship’s name in March 2026.

The approximately 4,000-passenger ship is also expected to incorporate characters and stories from Frozen, The Little Mermaid and Encanto, although Disney has not yet explained how those franchises will feature onboard.

Its homeport and itineraries have also not yet been announced.

A fuller Disney Believe reveal is scheduled to be livestreamed on 7th October 2026, when further details about the ship are expected.

Three-Ship New Class Will Follow From 2029

Disney Cruise Line also used the Disney Experiences Showcase, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress to confirm more about the three ships that will follow Disney Believe.

The vessels were originally announced during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024 as part of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion to a 13-ship fleet.

Disney cruise ships compared

Until now, however, relatively little had been revealed about how the three ships would fit into the company’s existing lineup.

Disney has now confirmed they will form an entirely new class.

The ships will be larger than Disney Cruise Line’s classic vessels, such as Disney Wonder, but smaller than newer ships including Disney Wish.

That places the new class in the middle of Disney’s fleet by size and could allow the company to operate in destinations where the larger Wish-class ships may be less suitable.

Claire Weiss explained that the ships will be “right in the middle of our classic ships and our newer ones. That gives us some amazing opportunities to visit new places and reach brand new audiences we haven’t before.”

Disney showed D23 attendees the first teaser image of the new class during the presentation, with Weiss confirming that the preview had not previously been shown publicly.

Few further details were disclosed, including the names of the ships, their capacities, homeports, onboard attractions or intended destinations.

The first vessels from the new class are expected to begin entering service from 2029.

Their arrival will mark another major step in Disney Cruise Line’s expansion. The fleet has grown beyond the original Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy with the additions of Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure, while Disney Believe will follow in 2027.

Once the three newly confirmed vessels arrive, Disney Cruise Line is expected to operate a fleet of 13 ships, giving the company a considerably broader range of ship sizes and potentially allowing it to expand into additional cruise markets around the world.

Massive Illuminated Dragon Installed On MSC World Asia

MSC Cruises has completed the installation of a spectacular 39-foot illuminated dragon sculpture aboard MSC World Asia, just months ahead of the ship’s debut in December 2026.

MSC World Asia Dragon Installation

The impressive stainless steel artwork, adorned with 680 mirrors and more than 3,000 LED lights, now sits prominently above the World Promenade, serving as the centrepiece of the vessel’s Asian-inspired design philosophy.

The cruise line documented the complex installation process in a video shared across its social media channels, showcasing the precision required to bring this architectural marvel aboard.

Massive cranes carefully lifted individual sections of the dragon sculpture over the 215,863 gross-ton vessel before lowering them onto the ship piece by piece.

Once aboard, skilled crews meticulously assembled the components before hoisting the completed sculpture into its permanent position above the World Promenade.

The installation represents a significant milestone in the ship’s construction timeline, marking one of the final major artistic additions before MSC World Asia enters service.

Technical Specifications Of The Dragon Sculpture

The magnificent dragon, fabricated by Milan-based Balich Wonder Studio, stretches 39 feet in length and measures 11.5 feet in width. Its pearlescent white finish creates a striking visual against the ship’s contemporary interior design, whilst the stainless steel construction ensures durability for years of service at sea.

The sculpture’s most impressive features lie in its illumination capabilities. Engineers equipped the dragon with 400 metres of strip lighting integrated throughout its structure, complemented by more than 3,000 individual LED lights positioned strategically across its surface.

The 680 mirrors embedded within the design amplify the lighting effects, creating a dazzling spectacle that transforms the World Promenade atmosphere after dark. This level of technical sophistication represents MSC Cruises’ commitment to creating immersive onboard environments that extend beyond traditional cruise ship décor.

The lighting system can be programmed to create various moods and effects, enhancing the passenger experience during evening hours when the promenade becomes a central gathering space.

Asian Cultural Philosophy Defines Ship Design

Asian Cultural Philosophy Defines Ship Design

MSC World Asia distinguishes itself from its World-class sister ships through comprehensive Asian-inspired theming woven throughout the vessel’s public spaces and amenities. The cruise line announced these unique design elements in December 2025, a full year before the ship’s scheduled debut, building anticipation amongst cruise enthusiasts and industry observers.

Asian culture, art, and landscapes form the foundation of MSC’s design philosophy for this vessel. Rather than superficial decoration, the company worked with cultural consultants and designers to ensure authentic representation of Asian aesthetic principles throughout the ship’s architecture and interior spaces.

This approach marks a departure from the European and American theming found aboard MSC World Europa and MSC World America respectively. By dedicating each World-class vessel to a distinct cultural identity, MSC Cruises creates unique experiences even amongst ships that share identical technical specifications and layouts.

Eight-Tonne Tree Of Life Complements Dragon Installation

Eight-Tonne Tree Of Life Complements Dragon Installation

The dragon sculpture shares the spotlight with another impressive architectural installation – the eight-tonne Tree of Life. This illuminated structure, installed in June 2026, draws inspiration from contemporary Asian cities, particularly Singapore’s iconic Supertrees at Marina Bay Gardens.

The Tree of Life serves multiple functional purposes beyond its aesthetic appeal. Positioned as the focal point of The Harbour, the tree marks the entry point to the Spiral, an extraordinary 266-foot dry slide that winds across 12 decks of the ship.

This record-breaking slide connects The Harbour on the upper decks to the World Promenade below, offering passengers an exhilarating journey through the heart of the vessel. The combination of the dragon and Tree of Life creates complementary artistic anchors that define different areas of the ship.

Where the dragon brings dynamism and energy to the Promenade, the tree provides a grounding presence in The Harbour, demonstrating thoughtful consideration in the overall design narrative.

Pan-Asian Culinary Experiences Enhance Thematic Immersion

Pan-Asian Culinary Experiences Enhance Thematic Immersion

MSC World Asia’s Asian inspiration extends beyond architectural elements into the culinary programme. The ship will feature a dedicated pan-Asian speciality restaurant serving dishes inspired by Southeast Asian cuisine, offering passengers an authentic gastronomic journey alongside the visual cultural experience.

Whilst the venue’s name has not yet been announced, details confirm it will showcase culinary traditions from across the region, potentially including influences from Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Filipino cuisines. An adjacent bar will complement the dining experience with beverages crafted using flavours and ingredients sourced from across Asia.

This dining concept adds to MSC Cruises’ expanding portfolio of speciality restaurants, which have become increasingly important differentiators in the competitive cruise market. Passengers increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences during their voyages, and themed dining venues provide accessible entry points to different culinary traditions.

World-Class Series Maintains Consistency With Unique Identities

World-Class Series Maintains Consistency With Unique Identities

MSC World Asia represents the third vessel in MSC Cruises’ groundbreaking World-class series, following MSC World Europa and MSC World America. These ships share fundamental design elements, including the revolutionary Y-shaped aft design that creates spacious outdoor areas and the innovative LNG-powered propulsion system that significantly reduces environmental impact.

However, the distinct cultural theming of each vessel ensures passengers experience something different depending on which ship they choose. MSC World Europa embraces European sophistication and design principles, whilst MSC World America celebrates contemporary American culture and lifestyle. MSC World Asia completes this trilogy with its comprehensive Asian inspiration.

This strategy allows MSC Cruises to appeal to diverse passenger demographics whilst maintaining operational efficiencies through standardised ship designs. The 215,863 gross-ton vessels can accommodate similar passenger numbers and share technical specifications, simplifying crew training and maintenance procedures whilst offering varied guest experiences.

Construction Timeline And Technical Milestones

Construction Timeline And Technical Milestones

Construction on MSC World Asia commenced in April 2024 with a traditional steel-cutting ceremony at the renowned Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. This milestone occurred just two days after MSC World America achieved her float-out at the same facility, demonstrating the shipyard’s capacity to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.

The ship reached her own float-out milestone in November 2025, when she was moved from the construction hall to the outfitting dock. This critical phase allowed crews to access the vessel from water level, accelerating the installation of technical systems and interior furnishings.

Initial sea trials took place in July 2026, testing propulsion systems, navigation equipment, and safety systems under real-world conditions. These trials typically last several days and occur in stages, with engineers methodically evaluating every system before certifying the vessel as seaworthy.

The dragon installation in recent weeks represents one of the final major artistic additions before delivery. Interior finishing work continues as the ship approaches her scheduled handover to MSC Cruises ahead of the December 2026 debut.

Inaugural Mediterranean Season Before Asian Deployment

Inaugural Mediterranean Season Before Asian Deployment

Despite the comprehensive Asian theming throughout the vessel, MSC World Asia will launch with a distinctly European inaugural programme. Her maiden voyage is scheduled for 4th December 2026, departing Barcelona on a seven-night Mediterranean itinerary.

This initial deployment allows European passengers to experience the ship before she relocates to Asian waters, where her cultural theming will resonate most strongly with local passengers and those specifically seeking Asian cruise experiences. The Mediterranean season also provides an opportunity to refine operations and address any technical issues in relatively calm waters close to the shipyard.

Following her European debut season, MSC World Asia is expected to reposition to Asia, though specific deployment details and homeports have not yet been announced. The ship’s design and theming suggest she will likely serve key Asian markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, or Shanghai, competing directly with established Asian cruise operators.

The World-class series expansion continues beyond MSC World Asia. MSC World Atlantic is currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique with a planned 2027 debut.

MSC Cruises has also ordered two additional World-class vessels from the French shipyard, scheduled to enter service in 2030 and 2031 respectively, bringing the total World-class fleet to seven ships by the early 2030s. This ambitious expansion underscores MSC’s commitment to competing with industry leaders Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Corporation across global markets.

Carnival Extends Final Payment Deadline To 30 Days Before Sailing

Carnival Cruise Line has launched a limited-time promotion offering guests significantly more flexibility with payment schedules. The final payment deadline has moved from up to 91 days before departure to just 30 days prior to sailing.

The More Time More Perks Sale, running through Monday, 17th August 2026, also includes discounts of up to 40% on cruises. Additionally, there are extra benefits designed to make booking more affordable for guests.

Unprecedented Payment Flexibility For Cruise Guests

The shift in final payment timing represents a major departure from Carnival’s standard booking policies. Typically, the cruise line requires guests to settle their accounts between 76 and 91 days before their scheduled departure date, depending on the length and type of voyage.

Under this special promotion, passengers booking cruises during the sale period will have until 30 days before embarkation to complete their final payment. This extended timeframe provides guests with significantly more financial flexibility.

This allows them to spread out their cruise expenses over a longer period. Passengers can potentially take advantage of additional income or bonuses before the payment deadline arrives.

The change applies exclusively to new bookings made during the promotional window, which closes on 17th August 2026. Guests must request rate code O7O when making their reservation to ensure they receive the extended payment terms along with the other promotional benefits.

Comprehensive Sale Package Includes Multiple Benefits

Comprehensive Sale Package Includes Multiple Benefits

Beyond the extended payment timeline, Carnival’s More Time More Perks Sale bundles several attractive incentives designed to enhance value for guests. The promotion centres around five core benefits that work together to reduce both upfront and overall cruise costs.

The headline discount offers savings of up to 40% off standard cruise fares. The exact percentage varies based on sailing date, destination, and stateroom category.

This discount applies to a wide range of itineraries across Carnival’s fleet. It gives guests numerous options for their next cruise holiday.

Deposit requirements have been slashed by 50% across all bookings made during the sale period. This reduction in the initial financial commitment makes it easier for guests to secure their preferred sailing and stateroom without a substantial upfront investment.

The lower deposit applies to every ship in Carnival’s fleet and covers all stateroom categories and types.

Onboard Credit Sweetens The Deal For Guests

Onboard Credit Sweetens The Deal For Guests

Carnival is providing complimentary onboard credit to passengers who book during the promotional period. The amount varies based on cruise length.

The credit is deposited directly into guests’ Sail & Sign accounts, the onboard charging system used throughout their voyage.

For shorter sailings of two to five days, passengers receive 12.50 US dollars per person, up to a maximum of 25 US dollars per stateroom. Longer cruises of six days or more qualify for enhanced credit of 25 US dollars per person, with a maximum of 50 US dollars per stateroom.

The onboard credit functions as a non-refundable addition to guests’ shipboard spending accounts. Passengers can use these funds for a variety of onboard purchases and experiences.

These include specialty dining, spa treatments, shore excursions, beverage packages, casino play, and retail shopping. However, the credit cannot be applied retrospectively to reduce the cruise fare itself or be redeemed for cash.

Room Upgrades Available From Just One Dollar

Room Upgrades Available From Just One Dollar

One of the most intriguing elements of the promotion is the availability of cabin location upgrades for a nominal fee of just one US dollar. These upgrades are assigned automatically at the time of booking, subject to availability.

The upgrade system operates on a like-to-like category basis. This means guests will receive a better location within their booked stateroom type rather than a move to a higher category.

Interior stateroom bookings may be upgraded to a more desirable interior location. Ocean view cabins can be moved to a better positioned ocean view, and balcony staterooms to a preferable balcony location.

Factors that determine upgrade desirability include deck location, proximity to lifts and public areas, and positioning relative to entertainment venues. The automatic upgrade system aims to place guests in the most sought-after positions within their chosen category.

Because upgrades are assigned at booking and based on availability, guests who book earlier in the promotional period may have access to a wider selection of improved cabin locations. This creates an incentive for interested travellers to secure their reservations sooner rather than later.

Fleet-Wide Availability Through May 2027

Fleet-Wide Availability Through May 2027

The promotion encompasses Carnival’s entire fleet of vessels. This provides guests with an extensive array of options across different ship sizes, amenities, and itinerary types.

With more than two dozen ships currently in operation, Carnival offers one of the largest fleets in the cruise industry. They sail to destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, and beyond.

The sale covers cruises departing through May 2027, giving guests nearly a year’s worth of sailing dates to consider. This extended booking window allows passengers to plan well in advance for special occasions and to coordinate with work schedules and school holidays.

The only restriction is that selected sailings must fall outside the final payment date when the booking is made. In practical terms, this means guests must book at least 30 days before their intended departure to qualify for the promotional terms.

Carnival operates from more homeports in the United States than any other cruise line. This distinction has earned the company its self-proclaimed title of “America’s Cruise Line.”

This extensive port network includes year-round and seasonal operations from cities such as Miami, Port Canaveral, Galveston, Long Beach, New York, Baltimore, Charleston, Jacksonville, Mobile, New Orleans, Norfolk, Port Tampa Bay, and San Francisco.

Strategic Timing Of The Promotional Offer

The timing of this promotion is particularly noteworthy within the broader context of the cruise industry’s booking patterns. August traditionally represents a period when cruise lines seek to stimulate bookings for the following year.

Many travellers have completed their summer holiday planning and begin considering future travel options during this time.

By offering enhanced payment flexibility alongside traditional discounts and perks, Carnival is addressing one of the primary concerns many potential cruisers face when booking in advance.

The standard final payment deadline of 76 to 91 days can be challenging for budget-conscious travellers. These travellers prefer to delay major expenses until closer to their departure date.

The promotional structure encourages guests to commit to their bookings. This is accomplished by combining immediate benefits, such as the reduced deposit and room upgrade, with future flexibility through the extended payment deadline.

This approach reduces the financial barrier to booking while maintaining the advance reservation that helps cruise lines optimise capacity planning and revenue management.

Booking Process And Terms To Remember

Guests interested in taking advantage of the More Time More Perks Sale should be prepared to reference the specific rate code when making their reservation. Code O7O must be requested to ensure the booking receives all applicable promotional benefits.

Reservations can be made directly through Carnival’s official website at Carnival.com. Guests can browse available sailings, compare stateroom options, and complete the booking process online.

Alternatively, travellers may prefer to work with their preferred travel professional. They can assist with selecting the optimal sailing, stateroom, and any additional elements such as dining packages or shore excursions.

The promotion’s 17th August 2026 end date creates a defined window for decision-making. Guests who are considering multiple sailing options should factor this deadline into their planning process.

This ensures they avoid missing out on the promotional benefits offered.

As with all cruise promotions, terms and conditions apply. Guests are encouraged to review the complete details before finalising their booking.

Specific restrictions may apply to certain sailing dates, stateroom categories, or itineraries. Promotional benefits cannot typically be combined with other offers or applied to existing reservations.

Industry Context And Carnival’s Market Position

Industry Context And Carnival's Market Position

Carnival Cruise Line operates as the flagship brand of Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest cruise company. The brand has built its reputation on providing casual, fun-oriented cruise experiences at accessible price points.

Carnival attracts a broad demographic of cruisers, including families, couples, and groups of friends. The line’s emphasis on value and convenience aligns with promotional strategies like the More Time More Perks Sale.

This promotion removes barriers to booking while enhancing the overall proposition for guests. Carnival’s extensive fleet and diverse itinerary offerings mean that most travellers can find a sailing that fits their schedule, budget, and destination preferences.

In recent years, the cruise industry has become increasingly competitive in attracting and retaining guests. Lines regularly launch promotions that combine multiple benefits.

Carnival’s decision to extend final payment deadlines to just 30 days represents a particularly aggressive approach to payment flexibility. This may potentially set a new benchmark for promotional offers within the industry.

Carnival Partners With Sneaker Impact For Fleet-Wide Recycling Initiative

Carnival Cruise Line has launched a ground-breaking shoe recycling programme across its entire U.S. fleet in partnership with Miami-based organisation Sneaker Impact. The initiative collects unclaimed footwear left behind onboard, alongside shoes donated by guests and crew members, diverting them from landfills and giving them new purpose through reuse or recycling.

First-Of-Its-Kind Partnership Between Cruise Line And Recycling Organisation

The collaboration represents the first partnership of its kind between a major cruise line and Sneaker Impact, marking a significant step forward in the cruise industry’s sustainability efforts. All collected shoes are transported to Sneaker Impact’s Miami facility, where they undergo evaluation and processing to determine the most environmentally responsible path forward.

Shoes left on a cruise

The programme addresses a practical problem that has long affected the cruise industry – the volume of items left behind by passengers after disembarkation. Shoes, in particular, represent a common forgotten item that previously would have contributed to waste streams.

By creating a structured system to collect and redirect these items, Carnival has transformed what was once a disposal challenge into an opportunity for positive environmental and social impact.

Impressive Results From Initial Trial Phase

Initial results from the programme’s trial phase have exceeded expectations, demonstrating significant potential for large-scale impact. During July, with just five Carnival vessels participating in the shoe collection effort, the programme successfully diverted more than 500 pairs of shoes from landfills in a single month.

“We’re always looking for new ways to reduce waste and strengthen our sustainability efforts,” said Benton Lobo, vice president of compliance and environmental operations at Carnival Cruise Line. “In July, with just five of our ships offloading shoes, we kept more than 500 pairs out of landfills in a single month.”

Scaled across our full fleet, we see the potential to give new life to about 50,000 pairs of shoes. It’s proof that a small idea can add up to a real impact, both onboard and in communities around the world.”

When extrapolated across Carnival’s entire fleet of vessels, the cruise line projects the programme could divert approximately 50,000 pairs of shoes annually from landfills. This substantial volume underscores both the scale of the opportunity and the cruise line’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to operational waste challenges.

Sophisticated Sorting System Determines Best Use For Each Pair

Sophisticated Sorting System Determines Best Use For Each Pair

Sneaker Impact employs a comprehensive sorting and evaluation system to determine the optimal outcome for each pair of shoes received through the programme. Footwear arrives at the Miami facility in various conditions, from nearly new items accidentally left behind to well-worn shoes donated by crew members at the end of their useful life.

Shoes deemed to be in good, wearable condition follow a reuse pathway designed to generate economic opportunity in developing regions. These pairs are made available to small business owners and entrepreneurs in communities around the world, who can sell them to generate income and support their families.

This approach extends the useful life of the footwear whilst simultaneously creating economic development opportunities in areas where access to affordable shoes may be limited.

Footwear that has reached the end of its wearable life doesn’t go to waste either. Instead, these shoes enter a recycling stream where they are carefully disassembled and their component materials recovered.

The separated materials can be repurposed into a wide range of products, including athletic surfaces such as running tracks and sports courts, yoga mats, components for new footwear, and various other manufactured goods.

Creating Social Impact Alongside Environmental Benefits

The partnership delivers benefits that extend well beyond environmental metrics, creating meaningful social impact in developing economies. By providing inventory to small-scale retailers and entrepreneurs, the programme contributes to income generation and economic self-sufficiency in communities that often face limited access to international supply chains.

“Sneaker Impact is honoured to partner with Carnival Cruise Line, as they share our commitment to sustainability and making a positive impact. Together, we’re making it easy for guests to give their unwanted footwear a second life through reuse and responsible recycling.”

We’re excited to see how many pairs of shoes, and lives, we can impact together,” noted Moe Hachem, CEO of Sneaker Impact.

The dual focus on environmental responsibility and social development aligns with broader trends in corporate sustainability, where leading companies increasingly seek initiatives that address multiple stakeholder concerns simultaneously. Rather than viewing sustainability purely through an environmental lens, this approach recognises the interconnected nature of ecological and social challenges.

Part Of Broader Sustainability Strategy And Emissions Goals

The shoe recycling initiative represents one component of Carnival Cruise Line’s comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The programme sits within a larger framework of initiatives designed to reduce the cruise line’s environmental footprint across multiple dimensions, from waste management to energy consumption and emissions reduction.

Carnival recently announced an ambitious target to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2029, compared to its 2019 baseline. This commitment reflects the increasing pressure on cruise operators to address their carbon footprint and contribute to global climate goals.

The shipping industry as a whole faces mounting expectations from regulators, investors, and consumers to demonstrate meaningful progress on decarbonisation. The greenhouse gas reduction target will require substantial investment in new technologies, operational improvements, and potentially alternative fuels.

Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Carnival Cruise Line, has been exploring various approaches including liquefied natural gas propulsion, shore power connections to reduce emissions whilst in port, and energy efficiency improvements across its fleet.

Carnival’s Environmental Track Record And Industry Context

Carnival's Environmental Track Record And Industry Context

Carnival Cruise Line, operating as part of the broader Carnival Corporation portfolio, has faced both praise for sustainability initiatives and criticism over environmental compliance issues in recent years. The company operates one of the world’s largest cruise fleets, with vessels sailing to destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Europe, and beyond.

The scale of Carnival’s operations means that even small percentage improvements in waste diversion or emissions reduction translate into substantial absolute impacts. With millions of passengers sailing aboard Carnival vessels each year, programmes that engage guests in sustainability efforts can create meaningful change whilst also building awareness and shifting behaviours that passengers may carry forward into their daily lives.

The cruise industry more broadly has made substantial investments in environmental technologies and programmes over the past decade, responding to regulatory requirements such as the International Maritime Organization’s sulphur cap and ballast water management rules, as well as voluntary commitments to exceed baseline compliance standards.

Advanced wastewater treatment systems, waste-to-energy technology, and sophisticated recycling programmes have become standard features aboard newly built vessels.

Guest And Crew Participation Key To Programme Success

The shoe collection programme relies on active participation from both passengers and crew members to achieve its potential impact. Guests sailing aboard Carnival vessels are encouraged to donate shoes they no longer need rather than discarding them, whilst crew members can contribute footwear that has reached the end of its useful life after long periods working at sea.

Carnival’s crew members, who typically work contracts lasting several months at a time, represent a significant potential source of donated footwear. The physical demands of shipboard work, combined with limited storage space in crew accommodations, mean that crew members often need to replace worn-out shoes during their contracts.

By providing a convenient donation option, the programme ensures these shoes enter the recycling stream rather than being discarded. The programme also addresses the practical reality that passengers frequently forget items when disembarking after their cruise.

Lost and found departments aboard cruise ships handle thousands of items annually, many of which go unclaimed despite cruise lines’ efforts to reunite passengers with their belongings. By establishing partnerships like the one with Sneaker Impact, Carnival can ensure that unclaimed items serve a useful purpose rather than simply being disposed of after a holding period.

Looking Forward As Programme Expands Fleet-Wide

Looking Forward As Programme Expands Fleet-Wide

As the shoe recycling initiative rolls out across Carnival’s complete U.S. fleet, the cruise line will gain valuable data on collection volumes, guest participation rates, and overall programme effectiveness. These metrics will help refine collection procedures, identify opportunities to increase participation, and potentially inform similar initiatives for other categories of items commonly left behind or donated by passengers and crew.

The partnership model established with Sneaker Impact could serve as a template for collaborations with other specialised recycling organisations focused on different material streams. Cruise lines generate diverse waste categories, from textiles and electronics to cooking oil and food waste, each of which may benefit from partnerships with organisations possessing specific expertise and processing capabilities.

Success of the programme may also inspire similar initiatives across other cruise brands within the Carnival Corporation family, which includes lines such as Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Cunard Line, among others. The corporation’s substantial scale means that programmes proven effective on one brand can potentially be replicated across multiple fleets, multiplying the positive impact.
