Fire Erupts At New Whittier Cruise Terminal, Forcing Norwegian Jade Off Dock

A major fire broke out Monday, September 14, at Whittier, Alaska’s newly opened Chugach Glacier Gateway cruise terminal, forcing Norwegian Jade to pull away from the dock as emergency crews responded. The U.S. Coast Guard told Alaska media the fire was reported at about 11 a.m. local time. No injuries had been reported as of Monday afternoon.

Norwegian Jade was alongside the terminal when the blaze began but safely moved away, according to the Coast Guard. A nearby tour vessel, Klondike Express, was also moved from the area; officials said no passengers were aboard it when the fire started. Images showed heavy flames and smoke around the dock. The cause remained unknown Monday afternoon. Norwegian Jade was scheduled to begin a seven-night Alaska sailing from Whittier on September 14.
