Holland America Line has confirmed plans for a sweeping, multi-year refurbishment initiative that will see six of its ships extensively upgraded as part of a $500 million investment aimed at modernising the fleet while preserving its hallmark mid-sized ship experience.
Dubbed Holland America Evolution, the programme represents the largest upgrade project in the cruise line’s history. It will focus on four Vista-class ships, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam, alongside the Signature-class vessels Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.
The upgrades will introduce new venues, additional accommodation categories and updated public spaces across each ship, with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, which originally constructed all six vessels, appointed to carry out the work.

While the cruise line has not yet released full details for each vessel, it has confirmed that the scope of work will vary between ships and may evolve over time. The emphasis will remain on enhancing the onboard guest experience, though technical improvements are also expected.
First Major Refurbishment Planned For Oosterdam
The first ship scheduled to undergo the Evolution transformation will be Oosterdam, which entered service in 2003. Although the vessel received a brief refurbishment in April 2025, that work was limited in scope, focusing mainly on cosmetic updates such as an expanded casino and refreshed spa areas.
The upcoming Evolution overhaul will be far more extensive. While specific dry dock dates have not yet been announced, Oosterdam is expected to re-enter service in autumn 2027 with its full range of upgrades. Sailings following the refurbishment are due to go on sale from 6th May 2026.
Among the most notable additions will be the introduction of the Grand Dutch Café, previously exclusive to Pinnacle-class ships. The venue is expected to serve as a central social hub, offering speciality coffees, Dutch-inspired snacks and a curated selection of Dutch and Belgian beers.
Accommodation enhancements will also be significant. Plans include 30 new Solo Verandah cabins, each featuring a private balcony, catering to the growing number of solo travellers. Two new Bridgeview Suites will provide approximately 900 square feet of space, complete with wraparound balconies and panoramic 180-degree views.
The Pinnacle Suite will be redesigned to offer more than 1,500 square feet of space, while 24 additional Vista Suites will also be introduced as part of the reconfiguration.
Further announcements detailing specific upgrades across the wider fleet are expected in the coming weeks as the project develops.
Sustainability Central To Revitalisation Strategy
Sustainability will play a key role throughout the Evolution programme, particularly as the ships involved will be more than two decades old by the time their upgrades are completed.
Holland America Line has indicated that the refurbishment work will prioritise material reuse and upcycling wherever possible, alongside targeted technical enhancements to improve energy efficiency.
These measures are intended to extend the operational lifespan of the vessels while reducing their environmental footprint, ensuring they continue to deliver a premium cruise experience for years to come.
