A 16-year-old boy has been indicted as an adult in connection with the death of Anna Kepner, five months after the teenager was found dead aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship during a family holiday.
The US Department of Justice confirmed that the suspect, identified only by the initials T.H., faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Although the case initially proceeded under juvenile jurisdiction, it has since been transferred for adult prosecution due to the seriousness of the alleged offences.
If convicted, the teenager could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family during this unimaginable loss,” said US Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida.
“A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging serious offences that allegedly occurred aboard a vessel in international waters. We will present the evidence in court and pursue this case with professionalism and care. As in every case, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The decision to try a minor as an adult is made based on multiple factors, including the severity of the alleged crime, prior history, and psychological assessments.
Assistant US Attorney Alejandra L. López is leading the prosecution.
Carnival Cruise Line has not issued any public statement regarding the case, which remains ongoing. No crew members were involved in the incident, and the cruise line itself is not a party to any legal action connected to the case.
The Death Of Anna Kepner
Anna Kepner was discovered dead in her stateroom aboard Carnival Horizon on 8th November 2025, during the final day of a six-night Western Caribbean sailing.
The cruise had departed Miami on 2nd November, with scheduled calls in Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Kepner had been travelling with her family and was sharing a cabin on Deck 8 with her 16-year-old stepbrother, T.H., and another stepbrother aged 14.
Her body was found after she failed to appear for breakfast. She had been wrapped in a sheet and concealed beneath the bed using lifejackets.
Due to the suspicious circumstances, the Federal Bureau of Investigation took over the case while the ship was still in international waters.
A post-mortem later determined the cause of death to be mechanical asphyxiation caused by a “bar hold”, a form of strangulation involving pressure applied to the throat with a forearm.
Kepner was a senior at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, and had been due to graduate in May 2026. She had reportedly planned to pursue a career in the military.
The case has drawn significant attention, including scrutiny over reported text messages exchanged between Kepner’s stepmother and her ex-husband, which appeared to suggest early concerns about potential criminal charges.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Kepner’s community, with friends, classmates, teachers and colleagues remembering her as a well-liked and ambitious young woman.
No trial date has yet been confirmed. Authorities have reiterated that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
