A cruise ship caught fire while docked in Jeju, South Korea this week, with three crew members injured as a result.
The Adora Mediterranea, sailing for Chinese-American cruise line Adora Cruises, was visiting Jeju as planned when a fire broke out in the engine room.
It’s not fully clear what caused the fire to start, but a letter from the cruise line to guests onboard said that it was due to a failure of air conditioning systems.
The fire did reach some guest areas but was brought under control by the onboard safety systems, including the sprinkler system.
Three crew members suffered from smoke inhalation and were treated, but as most guests were ashore, that was the extent of the human injury.
The ship remained docked in Jeju for an additional day for repairs, with guests given a free tour of the destination as a thank-you and free hotel stays while the ship was briefly repaired and certified. This did mean that a visit to Fukuoka in Japan was unfortunately cancelled.
Following the repairs into the next day, the ship was then deemed safe to sail and set off for her home port of Tianjin in China.
As compensation for the issues, guests have been refunded all hotel service fees along with a 50% refund of the total cost of the cruise. They will also receive 400 RMB (around £43/$56) for the cancelled port visit to Fukuoka, as part of cruise travel protection that’s automatically in place for all guests.
