Virgin Voyages And OneSpaWorld Sued Over Alleged Assault Aboard Brilliant Lady

A passenger has filed a federal maritime lawsuit against Virgin Cruises Intermediate Limited and OneSpaWorld (Bahamas), alleging she was sexually assaulted by a spa worker aboard Brilliant Lady during an Alaska cruise this summer. The case was filed September 10 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The complaint, as summarized in a report by Cruise Fever, alleges that the worker used the ship’s booking system to arrange unauthorized after-hours massages and that Virgin Voyages and OneSpaWorld failed to adequately supervise personnel and protect passengers. The same worker was previously charged in federal court with two counts of abusive sexual contact involving passengers aboard Brilliant Lady. The lawsuit seeks damages exceeding $75,000 and a jury trial. The allegations have not been adjudicated, and the filing does not establish liability.

Construction Starts on New Carnival Cruise Ship, Carnival Tropicale

Carnival Tropicale
Rendering from Carnival Cruise Line of Carnival Tropicale

Construction started this week on the final Excel-class ship from Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Tropicale, when the first piece of steel was cut for this new vessel.

Carnival Tropicale is being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The ship will be 180,000 gross tons in size, 1,128 feet long, and accommodate more than 6,000 guests. It will also be powered by LNG.

Yesterday, Carnival Cruise Line opened reservations for bookings on this new ship that will debut in April 2028. Carnival Tropicale will offer cruises to the Caribbean from Galveston, Texas.

Since the ship will homeport in Galveston, the vessel’s bow will feature the “Star of Texas”.

Carnival Tropicale will feature innovative dining and entertainment concepts, as well as a new themed area called Sunsation Point, designed as a vibrant family adventure zone.

At the heart of this area will be Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, a multi-story water park, complemented by a wide range of additional family-friendly leisure and entertainment attractions.

What’s next for Carnival Tropicale now that the first piece of steel has been cut? The shipyard will begin to weld blocks together ahead of the keel laying.

Once the keel has been laid, blocks will begin to be welded together, forming the structure of the ship. Once all the blocks are together, the ship will touch water for the first time during a float-out ceremony.

Once the ship is floated out, it will move to the final stage of construction, the outfitting pier. Here, the inside and outer decks of the ship will be completed ahead of its debut in the spring of 2028.

Ben Clement, EVP of maritime and new builds at Carnival Cruise Line, gave the following statement about construction starting on Carnival Tropicale:

“Today marks an exciting day for Carnival Tropicale as guests can now begin planning their vacations aboard this incredible new ship. From innovative attractions and dining to unforgettable destinations throughout the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico, Carnival Tropicale will bring an exciting new vacation option to Texas when she debuts in 2028.”

André Walter, CEO of MEYER WERFT GmbH, added:

“I am delighted to experience my first construction celebration as the new CEO of MEYER WERFT. Carnival Tropicale is already the fifth Excel-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line, a successful and highly popular series that reflects our long-standing partnership with Carnival.”

World’s Only Ocean Liner Is Getting Remodeled in Early 2027

Queen Mary 2, the world’s only ocean liner, is going into dry dock next spring to receive a major renovation.

The ship’s renovation will introduce new Grill Suites, an elevated wellness offering, enhanced retail spaces, and carefully refreshed guest areas, while preserving the ship’s distinctive Art Deco identity and her place as the icon of Transatlantic glamour.

Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2, the world’s only ocean liner.

Queen Mary 2 will enter dry dock on March 31, 2027, and will return to service on May 9, 2027.

During the renovation, 31 new cabins will be added to the ship. This includes 16 new Cunard Princess Grill Suites and 15 staterooms in the Britannia category.

The new suites and staterooms opened for bookings this past spring for cruises departing from May 2027.

All existing Grill Suites will be refreshed with newly designed bathrooms and new interiors.

The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants will also be refreshed to ensure they continue to offer the same exceptional sense of space, comfort, and exclusivity.

The kennels on Queen Mary 2 will be enhanced and will have an increase in capacity. The owner’s lounge will also get refurbished with an expanded outdoor walking area for guests and their pets.

The ship’s world-class cultural and entertainment offerings will also be refreshed. Illuminations, the largest planetarium at sea, will receive a major digital upgrade, delivering more immersive, state-of-the-art experiences beneath its dome.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, gave the following statement:

“Queen Mary 2 is more than a ship, she is an icon of modern luxury travel and the only true ocean liner in the world. This is a significant investment in Queen Mary 2, and every decision has been approached with deep respect for her heritage, her character and the sense of occasion that only Queen Mary 2 can offer. We are not reinventing what guests love about her; we are refining it beautifully and ensuring she carries it forward.”

The refurbishment follows a landmark year for Queen Mary 2, when she took center stage in New York Harbor for Sail 4th 250, the centerpiece of the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations.

Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of Cunard’s fleet and the only ship in the world that regularly offers Transatlantic crossings between New York and Southampton.

Carnival Freedom’s Whale Tail is Back! Video Shows Progress in Dry Dock

For about a year and a half, Carnival Cruise Line’s last Conquest-class ship has not looked quite right. After a fire in 2024 that burned off the fins on the whale tail funnel, the ship remained with that look up until a few days ago.

A recent video from the shipyard in Marseille, France showed the old funnel being removed and the new funnel being installed.

Carnival Freedom Nassau
Carnival Freedom

Carnival Freedom has had some bad luck with her whale tail after two separate incidents changed her iconic Carnival look.

The problems started back in May 2022 when the original funnel caught fire while docked in Grand Turk. Images went viral as the iconic red, white, and blue structure melted, leaving crew members with no choice but to trim off the damaged fins so the ship could safely keep sailing with a straight-pipe exhaust stack.

The ship was eventually fitted with a brand-new custom whale tail in late 2023, but unfortunately this look lasted only about five months.

In March 2024, bad luck struck again in the Bahamas when a lightning strike caused a fire inside the funnel during severe weather.

Once again, crews had to trim off the damaged parts of the funnel, leaving her with the bare stack that cruise goers affectionately named the “Whale-less Tail.”

Because the second fire hit right at the start of a packed sailing season, pulling her out of service immediately for weeks of major reconstruction wasn’t an option.

Carnival Freedom ended up sailing out of Port Canaveral without her whale tail for roughly 17 months.

Now, the wait is finally over. Footage in the video below shows heavy shipyard cranes lifting a newly made whale tail section into place to complete the look Carnival fans have all been waiting for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTGAHFQEHKE

On top of fixing the funnel, the current dry dock visit gives Carnival a chance to run routine maintenance and refresh interior guest spaces before sending the ship back out on her itineraries.

Viking Celebrates Flout Out of Its Second Hydrogen Powered Cruise Ship

The world’s fastest growing ocean cruise line, Viking, celebrated the float out of its second hydrogen-powered cruise ship that will debut next spring.

Viking Astrea reached a major construction milestone when the ship was floated out at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard in Italy.

A ceremonial cord was cut, signaling water to flow and fill the dry dock. It will take two days to fill the dry dock and float the ship to the outfitting pier.

The hydrogen-powered cruise ship will now move to the final stage of construction, the ship’s outfitting, where the inside of the ship will be completed. Viking Astrea will debut in May 2027 and sail its inaugural season in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

The ship will be 54,300 gross tons in size, have 499 cabins, and carry up to 998 guests. Viking Astrea will be nearly identical to the rest of Viking’s ocean ships.

Viking Astrea will have a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. This hybrid propulsion system will make her capable of navigating and operating with zero emissions, which would allow her to access even the most environmentally sensitive areas

Enabled by Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), Fincantieri’s subsidiary specializing in advanced fuel cell technology, the ship’s state-of-the-art propulsion system will be capable of producing up to six megawatts of power.

Leah Talactac, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viking, gave the following statement:

“The float out of the Viking Astrea represents another important milestone for Viking. From the beginning, we have sought thoughtful ways to design more efficient ships, and the Viking Astrea is an important step forward in that ongoing effort.”

Viking’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship that’s capable of operating at zero emissions, Viking Libra, is scheduled to be completed in November 2026.

Viking currently has a fleet of 13 ocean cruise ships in service. Once Viking Astrea joins the fleet next spring, the cruise line will add another five ocean ships that will be built by the end of 2030.

Carnival Venezia Passengers Told Not To Arrive Early In New York — Here’s Why

Carnival Venezia guests sailing from New York on Monday, September 14 are being told to adhere closely to their assigned terminal arrival appointments due to unusually heavy embarkation traffic at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Cruise Hive, which obtained the guest notice, reports Carnival warned that passengers who arrive before their selected time may not be permitted inside the terminal.

The six-night Bermuda cruise is still scheduled to depart at 4 p.m., with no itinerary change announced. Carnival’s general check-in guidance separately confirms that guests are expected to arrive within their assigned Arrival Appointment window. Cruise schedules also show Oceania Vista departing New York the same day, adding to the terminal congestion.

Norwegian And Carnival Stocks Hit 52-Week Lows

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Carnival Corporation shares both touched 52-week lows on Thursday, September 10, as cruise stocks came under renewed pressure. Cruise Industry News reported Norwegian traded as low as $14.48 while Carnival fell to $22.28. MarketWatch separately showed Norwegian closing at $14.57, down 1.89% for a fourth straight losing session, on heavier-than-average volume.

Industry reporting pointed to two issues weighing on sentiment: sharply higher fuel prices tied to the Middle East conflict and Wall Street concern about 2027 first-quarter Caribbean capacity and pricing. Royal Caribbean, Viking and Lindblad shares also fell Thursday, though they remained above their own 52-week lows.

Cunard Confirms Queen Mary 2 Damen Brest Refit

Cunard has selected Damen Shiprepair Brest to undertake a major refurbishment of Queen Mary 2, with the vessel scheduled to enter drydock on 31st March 2027 and return to service on 9th May 2027.

The extensive upgrades will introduce 31 new staterooms, refreshed Grill Suite interiors, and enhancements across dining, wellness, and entertainment venues aboard the iconic ocean liner.

A Major Investment In Cunard's Flagship Vessel

The Queen Mary 2 refit represents a significant investment in what remains the world’s only true ocean liner in regular transatlantic service.

Since entering service in 2004, the 151,200-tonne vessel has been the flagship of the Cunard fleet, maintaining the tradition of scheduled crossings between Southampton and New York that dates back to the company’s founding in 1840.

Damen Shiprepair Brest, located on France’s Atlantic coast, has been chosen to execute the comprehensive renovation programme.

The facility has previously handled major cruise ship refurbishments and offers the technical capabilities required for such an extensive project on a vessel of Queen Mary 2’s size and complexity.

The drydock period of approximately five weeks will allow shipyard workers to access areas of the vessel that cannot be modified whilst she is in service.

This concentrated timeframe also minimises disruption to Cunard’s operational schedule, particularly important given Queen Mary 2’s role in maintaining the transatlantic crossing programme that forms a core part of the line’s identity.

Thirty-One Additional Staterooms Join The Accommodation Mix

Thirty-One Additional Staterooms Join The Accommodation Mix

The centrepiece of the refurbishment involves adding 31 new staterooms across two distinct categories.

Sixteen of these will be new Cunard Princess Grill Suites, significantly expanding the ship’s premium accommodation inventory and responding to strong demand from luxury cruise passengers.

The remaining 15 new staterooms will fall within the Britannia category, the ship’s standard accommodation class.

This addition addresses capacity in a segment that often sees high demand, particularly on popular transatlantic crossings during peak season.

These additions will increase Queen Mary 2’s total passenger capacity, though the exact new capacity figure has not yet been disclosed by Cunard.

The original design accommodated 2,691 passengers at double occupancy, with maximum capacity reaching 3,056 when all berths are filled.

The creation of new staterooms aboard an existing vessel presents engineering challenges, as designers must identify underutilised spaces and reconfigure them whilst maintaining compliance with maritime safety regulations.

On a ship of Queen Mary 2’s vintage, nearly 23 years old by the time of this refit, such modifications also provide an opportunity to modernise systems and update passenger amenities to contemporary standards.

Complete Grill Suite Transformation Elevates Luxury Experience

Complete Grill Suite Transformation Elevates Luxury Experience

Every existing Grill Suite will receive a comprehensive refresh as part of the renovation programme.

The upgrades will introduce new interior design schemes, updated furnishings and finishes, and completely redesigned bathrooms across all Grill Suite categories.

The Grill Suites represent the pinnacle of accommodation aboard Queen Mary 2, providing guests with exclusive access to the Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants, dedicated concierge services, and priority embarkation.

These suites have historically attracted repeat Cunard guests who appreciate the refined atmosphere and personalised service that defines the Grill experience.

By renovating all existing Grill Suites alongside the addition of 16 new Princess Grill accommodations, Cunard is making a clear statement about where it sees growth in its target market.

The luxury cruise segment has demonstrated remarkable resilience and expansion in recent years, with affluent travellers seeking exclusive experiences and elevated service levels.

The bathroom redesigns are particularly noteworthy, as these spaces often age more quickly than other areas of a stateroom due to heavy daily use and exposure to moisture.

Modern cruise ship bathrooms increasingly feature premium materials, improved lighting, and enhanced storage solutions that were not standard when Queen Mary 2 originally launched.

Dining Venues Receive Contemporary Updates

Dining Venues Receive Contemporary Updates

The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants, which serve as the exclusive dining venues for Grill Suite guests, will both be refreshed as part of the renovation programme.

These intimate restaurants offer a more refined alternative to the main Britannia Restaurant, with personalised menus and enhanced service ratios.

The Queens Grill serves the ship’s top-tier suite guests, whilst the Princess Grill caters to the next accommodation level.

Both restaurants have maintained Cunard’s tradition of elegant dining experiences that recall the golden age of ocean travel, complete with white-glove service and classically inspired cuisine.

Cunard has not disclosed specific details about the nature of the restaurant refreshes, though such updates typically include new décor schemes, updated furniture and table settings, revised lighting designs, and potential modifications to the layout or flow of the dining spaces.

The goal is generally to maintain the venues’ traditional elegance whilst introducing contemporary touches that appeal to modern luxury travellers.

Additional outdoor deck space will also be added, though the exact location and purpose of this expansion has not been specified.

Outdoor space is at a premium on any cruise ship, and Queen Mary 2’s North Atlantic crossings can experience challenging weather conditions that make protected or versatile outdoor areas particularly valuable.

Expanded Facilities For Four-Legged Passengers

Expanded Facilities For Four-Legged Passengers

Queen Mary 2 holds a unique position in the cruise industry as one of the few vessels to accommodate pets, maintaining a tradition that dates back to the great ocean liners when transatlantic crossing by ship was the primary method of travelling between Europe and North America.

The ship’s kennels have long been a distinguishing feature, allowing passengers to travel with their dogs and cats.

The refit will see the kennels completely redesigned with increased capacity, addressing demand from pet owners who wish to bring their companions on transatlantic voyages.

The owners’ lounge, where passengers can spend time with their pets, will be refurbished with updated amenities.

An expanded outdoor walking area will provide more space for dogs to exercise during the crossing.

Given that a typical Southampton to New York crossing takes seven nights, adequate exercise facilities are essential for pet welfare.

This continued investment in pet facilities demonstrates Cunard’s commitment to preserving this distinctive offering.

In an era when most cruise lines prohibit pets entirely, Queen Mary 2’s kennels represent both a link to maritime history and a practical solution for passengers relocating between continents who prefer not to transport their pets via aircraft cargo holds.

Wellness, Shopping, And Entertainment Enhancements

Wellness, Shopping, And Entertainment Enhancements

The Mareel Wellness & Beauty spa will undergo a complete transformation as part of the refurbishment programme.

Spa facilities have become increasingly important amenities for cruise passengers, with modern travellers expecting comprehensive wellness offerings including treatment rooms, thermal suites, fitness centres, and relaxation areas.

The original Mareel facilities were last significantly updated during Queen Mary 2’s 2016 refit, meaning they will be 11 years old by the time of this renovation.

Spa design and wellness trends have evolved considerably in that period, with increasing emphasis on holistic treatments, thermal experiences, and dedicated relaxation spaces.

New luxury retail stores will be introduced, updating the ship’s shopping options to reflect contemporary luxury brands and passenger preferences.

Onboard retail has evolved significantly since Queen Mary 2’s debut, with cruise lines increasingly partnering with prestige brands to offer exclusive shopping experiences at sea.

The cultural and entertainment offerings will also receive attention, with Illuminations – the ship’s planetarium and cinema – receiving a digital upgrade.

Cunard describes Illuminations as the largest planetarium at sea, and the technological enhancement will deliver more immersive experiences for guests attending astronomy presentations, educational lectures, and film screenings.

Queen Mary 2 has always emphasised enrichment programming more heavily than typical cruise ships, with regular lectures from historians, authors, and subject matter experts.

The Illuminations upgrade supports this cultural focus by providing enhanced technical capabilities for presenters.

Strategic Timing For Peak Transatlantic Season

The scheduled completion date of 9th May 2027 positions Queen Mary 2 to return to service ahead of the peak summer transatlantic season.

Demand for westbound crossings traditionally increases in late spring as travellers journey to North America for summer holidays, whilst eastbound crossings see elevated demand in early autumn.

By completing the refit in early May, Cunard ensures its flagship vessel will be available for the lucrative summer crossing programme with all new features and refreshed facilities ready to showcase to passengers.

The timing also allows for any post-refit adjustments to be made during regular service before the busiest period.

Queen Mary 2 typically operates a schedule that includes regular Southampton to New York crossings supplemented by occasional voyages to other destinations.

The ship’s design, built specifically for the rigours of North Atlantic crossings, makes her less suitable for warm-weather cruising than purpose-built cruise ships, though she does undertake some cruise itineraries particularly during repositioning voyages.

The announcement of detailed refit plans well in advance also allows Cunard to manage passenger expectations and bookings.

Guests with reservations during the drydock period will need to be accommodated on alternative sailings, whilst the line can begin marketing the enhanced vessel for post-refit voyages.

Industry Context And Competitive Positioning

Industry Context And Competitive Positioning

The substantial investment in Queen Mary 2 occurs within a competitive luxury cruise market where lines are continually enhancing their offerings to attract and retain affluent passengers.

Cunard’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, has demonstrated commitment to updating its premium brands, with recent or upcoming refurbishments across multiple fleet vessels.

Queen Mary 2 competes not only with other ocean liners – of which there are effectively none in regular service – but also with luxury cruise ships, premium transatlantic air travel, and the exclusive appeal of private jet services for high-net-worth individuals crossing the Atlantic.

The Grill Suite enhancements in particular position the vessel to compete with ultra-luxury cruise lines that emphasise suite accommodations and personalised service.

The addition of new suites also reflects broader industry trends towards increased accommodation in premium categories.

Many cruise lines have found that suite guests generate higher revenue per passenger whilst often requiring proportionally similar crew and operational resources compared to standard stateroom guests.

Queen Mary 2’s unique position as the only vessel maintaining scheduled transatlantic liner service provides inherent competitive advantage, but Cunard clearly recognises that the onboard product must meet contemporary luxury standards to command premium pricing and maintain occupancy levels.

Oosterdam Evolution Makeover Accelerated By Five Weeks To Meet Demand

Holland America Line has announced a significant schedule change to its Evolution transformation programme, with the Oosterdam now set to complete its comprehensive refurbishment five weeks ahead of the original timeline. The ship will return to service on 31st October 2027, allowing the cruise line to add five additional sailings aboard the newly reimagined vessel.

Accelerated Timeline Responds To Strong Guest Interest

The decision to advance the Oosterdam’s dry dock stems from what Holland America describes as unprecedented guest response to its Evolution initiative. Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, confirmed that the earlier completion will enable the company to meet heightened consumer demand for the transformed vessel.

“We’re very happy with the unprecedented response we’ve received to Holland America Evolution, and we’re thrilled we can move up Oosterdam’s dry dock to meet guest demand,” said Bodensteiner. The acceleration represents a strategic pivot for the cruise line, which has invested heavily in modernising its fleet through the Evolution programme.

The Evolution transformation represents one of the most comprehensive refurbishment projects in Holland America’s recent history. The initiative encompasses sweeping changes to public spaces, dining venues, and accommodation categories across multiple ships in the fleet.

Five Additional Voyages Created By Schedule Change

Five Additional Voyages Created By Schedule Change

The expedited timeline enables Holland America to create five new cruises that were not previously part of the Oosterdam’s deployment schedule. These additional sailings span three distinct regions, offering guests more opportunities to experience the ship’s enhancements across varied itineraries.

The new cruises encompass Mediterranean, transatlantic, and Caribbean routes, providing a diverse range of options for passengers eager to sail aboard the refurbished vessel. This expanded offering demonstrates the cruise line’s confidence in market demand for the Evolution product.

Industry observers note that the decision to accelerate a major refurbishment is relatively unusual in cruise operations. The move suggests strong advance bookings and consumer enthusiasm for the extensive upgrades planned for the Oosterdam, which originally entered service in 2003 as part of the Vista-class series.

Enhanced Features To Include New Venues And Stateroom Categories

Enhanced Features To Include New Venues And Stateroom Categories

The Evolution transformation will introduce several signature venues and accommodation options to the Oosterdam. Among the most anticipated additions is the Grand Dutch Café, a dining concept that pays homage to Holland America’s Dutch heritage whilst offering passengers a casual dining alternative.

The redesigned Ocean Bar will provide guests with a refreshed social space, continuing Holland America’s tradition of creating sophisticated gathering areas throughout its ships. These public space enhancements form a core component of the Evolution philosophy, which emphasises both modernisation and preservation of the line’s classic elegance.

“Starting earlier allows us to create five additional cruises on the newly reimagined ship. Guests will have more opportunities to enjoy all of the enhancements coming to Oosterdam, from new stateroom and suite categories to the Grand Dutch Café and redesigned Ocean Bar,” Bodensteiner added.

The introduction of new stateroom and suite categories will expand accommodation choices, potentially attracting both loyal Holland America guests and new passengers to the brand. The Oosterdam currently accommodates approximately 1,964 guests at double occupancy, with a crew complement of around 820.

The ship measures 82,305 gross tonnes and spans 285 metres in length, making it a mid-sized vessel by contemporary cruise standards.

Marseille Shipyard Selected For Comprehensive Refurbishment Work

Marseille Shipyard Selected For Comprehensive Refurbishment Work

The transformation will take place at facilities in Marseille, France, a port city with extensive maritime infrastructure and shipyard capabilities. The selection of Marseille positions the vessel strategically for its post-refurbishment inaugural sailing from the Mediterranean region.

French shipyards have historically played an important role in maintaining and upgrading cruise vessels serving European waters. The Marseille location offers logistical advantages for sourcing materials and labour, whilst minimising repositioning requirements before the ship returns to revenue service.

The dry dock period will involve extensive work across multiple decks, requiring coordinated efforts from hundreds of contractors and craftspeople. Refurbishment projects of this magnitude typically involve gutting and rebuilding entire sections of the ship, replacing soft furnishings, upgrading technical systems, and implementing new design schemes throughout public and private spaces.

Inaugural Post-Transformation Voyage Explores Eastern Mediterranean

Inaugural Post-Transformation Voyage Explores Eastern Mediterranean

Following completion of her Evolution makeover, the Oosterdam will embark on a 10-day cruise from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Trieste, Italy, departing 31st October 2027. This inaugural post-transformation voyage will showcase the ship’s new features whilst visiting sought-after Mediterranean destinations.

Guests aboard the maiden sailing will visit ports in Italy, Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia, providing a comprehensive Eastern Mediterranean experience. The itinerary combines historically significant cities with scenic coastal towns, appealing to culturally minded travellers who appreciate Holland America’s destination-focused approach.

The choice of Trieste as the terminus port is noteworthy, as the northeastern Italian city serves as a gateway to Central Europe and offers excellent connectivity for guests concluding their cruise. The 10-day duration provides ample time for passengers to explore the ship’s new amenities between port calls.

Four New Sailings Span Mediterranean, Atlantic And Caribbean Waters

Four New Sailings Span Mediterranean, Atlantic And Caribbean Waters

The additional cruises created by the accelerated schedule offer diverse itinerary options across three distinct cruising regions. The first of these new voyages is an 11-day Mediterranean sailing from Trieste to Piraeus (Athens), Greece, departing 10th November 2027, extending the ship’s Eastern Mediterranean season.

A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Piraeus to Barcelona, Spain, will depart 21st November 2027, offering passengers a shorter voyage option whilst connecting two of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruise hubs. This sailing will likely appeal to guests seeking a week-long holiday during the autumn shoulder season.

The transatlantic crossing represents a highlight of the new offerings, with a 13-day voyage from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, leaving 28th November 2027. Transatlantic sailings have experienced renewed popularity in recent years, attracting passengers who appreciate the leisurely pace and sea days between continents.

Completing the new deployment, an 11-day Caribbean itinerary roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale will depart 11th December 2027. This sailing marks the Oosterdam’s introduction to Caribbean waters following her transformation, positioning the vessel for what will likely be an extensive winter Caribbean programme.

Previously Scheduled Voyages Cancelled To Enable Earlier Dry Dock

Previously Scheduled Voyages Cancelled To Enable Earlier Dry Dock

To facilitate the accelerated Evolution timeline, Holland America has cancelled several previously published voyages spanning nearly three months. Sailings from 11th September 2027 through 9th December 2027 will no longer operate as originally scheduled, affecting hundreds of guests who had already booked these cruises.

The cruise line has indicated it is contacting affected guests and travel advisers directly regarding rebooking options. This proactive communication approach aims to minimise inconvenience and maintain customer relationships despite the significant schedule disruption.

Industry protocols typically require cruise lines to offer full refunds or alternative sailing options when voyages are cancelled, particularly when the cancellation occurs well in advance. The advance notice – approximately 18 months before the affected sailings – provides passengers with substantial time to make alternative arrangements.

Opportunity For Original Bookings To Transfer To New Sailings

Opportunity For Original Bookings To Transfer To New Sailings

Holland America has confirmed that guests booked on what were previously the inaugural cruise and first transatlantic crossing in December 2027 will have priority opportunity to transfer to the corresponding new cruises. This arrangement ensures that passengers who had specifically chosen to be among the first aboard the transformed Oosterdam can maintain that distinction.

“We’re excited to welcome guests aboard as Oosterdam begins this new chapter and to give them the opportunity to be among the first to experience her transformation,” Bodensteiner stated. The transfer option demonstrates the cruise line’s commitment to honouring the intentions of early bookers who sought the prestige of sailing on inaugural or near-inaugural voyages.

Passengers who elect to move their bookings to the earlier sailings will maintain their status as among the first guests to experience the Evolution enhancements. This priority access holds particular appeal for Holland America loyalists and cruise enthusiasts who value being among the initial passengers to explore newly refurbished vessels.

New Voyages Available For Booking From Early October

New Voyages Available For Booking From Early October

Holland America has announced that the five new voyages will become available for booking in early October, allowing eager passengers to secure cabins aboard the transformed Oosterdam. The phased release suggests the cruise line is finalising pricing and inventory allocation before opening reservations to the general public.

The October sales launch will likely coincide with marketing campaigns highlighting the Evolution enhancements and promoting the earlier-than-expected availability. Travel advisers and Holland America’s sales team are expected to receive detailed information about the new sailings to assist clients in making informed booking decisions.

Early booking incentives may be offered to stimulate demand, though the strong guest response that prompted the schedule acceleration suggests reservations may fill quickly. Past performance indicates that newly refurbished ships often command premium pricing and generate robust advance bookings, particularly for inaugural and near-inaugural sailings.

The Evolution programme represents Holland America’s ongoing commitment to fleet modernisation whilst preserving the classic elegance that has defined the brand since its founding in 1873. The Oosterdam’s accelerated transformation reflects both operational flexibility and market-responsive planning, positioning the vessel to capitalise on strong consumer interest in the line’s enhanced product offering.

MSC World Asia Debuts Five New Bars And Lounges

MSC Cruises has unveiled details of five new bars, lounges and beverage concepts that will debut aboard MSC World Asia, the third vessel in the line’s innovative World-class series.

MSC World Asia

The announcement follows the recent reveal of the ship’s spa and wellness facilities and showcases venues designed to reflect Asian-inspired themes whilst offering distinct atmospheres for passengers throughout their cruise experience.

Scheduled for delivery in November 2025, MSC World Asia represents the cruise line’s continued expansion of its World-class platform, which introduced groundbreaking design features and spatial configurations when MSC World Europa launched in 2022.

The ship will feature design elements drawing inspiration from Asia’s diverse cultures, artistic traditions and natural landscapes, a thematic approach that extends throughout public spaces including the newly announced bar and lounge portfolio.

Clubhouse And Soda Bar Brings 1980s And 1990s Nostalgia

The Clubhouse and Soda Bar represents one of the most versatile new venues aboard MSC World Asia, offering distinct experiences depending on the time of day. Inspired by the nostalgia of the 1980s and 1990s, the space gives passengers the opportunity to create personalised “sodas” by selecting a base beverage and customising it with cream, flavoured syrups and various toppings.

During daytime hours, the venue transforms into a family-friendly entertainment hub featuring MSC Cruises-themed games, interactive digital tables and challenges that appeal to guests of all ages. Families with younger passengers can explore a dedicated LEGO area, whilst The Court section offers bumper cars for active recreation.

As evening approaches, the Clubhouse transitions into a social gathering space where adults can enjoy a selection of cocktails and mocktails. This dual-purpose design reflects MSC Cruises’ strategy of maximising venue utility aboard its ships, ensuring spaces serve multiple passenger demographics throughout the day whilst maintaining distinct atmospheres appropriate to different times.

Sky Box Bar Offers Mixology Theatre At Luna Park Arena

Located within the Luna Park Arena, Sky Box Bar will provide passengers with premium beverages and unique cocktail creations in a setting inspired by early 20th-century Futurism. The bar’s design philosophy centres on reimagining timeless cocktail favourites through a contemporary lens, offering familiar drinks with innovative presentations and unexpected ingredient combinations.

Guests at Sky Box Bar will be able to observe bartenders crafting drinks through what MSC Cruises describes as “mixology theatre,” turning beverage preparation into an entertaining spectacle. This approach to bar service has become increasingly popular across the cruise industry, with lines recognising that passengers value experiential elements alongside quality drinks.

The bar’s location within Luna Park Arena positions it at the heart of one of MSC World Asia’s major entertainment districts, ensuring convenient access for passengers enjoying activities in the surrounding area. This strategic placement follows established cruise design principles that cluster complementary venues to create distinct zones aboard large vessels.

The Terraces Bar Delivers Panoramic Views And Italian Classics

The Terraces Bar & Lounge offers passengers panoramic sea views alongside a beverage programme focused on classic Italian cocktails and wines. The venue will serve traditional favourites including Negroni and Aperol Spritz, alongside an expanded selection of spritzes, regional wines and prosecco varieties that showcase Italy’s diverse wine-producing regions.

Complementing the beverage offerings, The Terraces will serve traditional Italian bites such as focaccia and olives, creating an authentic aperitivo experience at sea. The venue will feature live music performances indoors, adding atmospheric entertainment to the drinking and dining experience.

Expert-led tasting sessions represent another key component of The Terraces’ programming, with sessions showcasing hand-picked local varieties that connect to destinations along the ship’s itinerary. These educational experiences align with broader industry trends towards destination-immersive programming that begins aboard the ship, allowing passengers to develop appreciation for regional food and beverage traditions before stepping ashore.

The combination of panoramic views, classic Italian beverages and live entertainment positions The Terraces as a signature venue aboard MSC World Asia, particularly appealing to passengers seeking relaxed sophistication in their onboard social spaces.

Coral Cove Bar Provides Poolside Retreat With Philippine Inspiration

Situated within the Coral Cove Pool area, Coral Cove Bar draws design inspiration from Philippine coral reefs, creating a relaxed poolside atmosphere where passengers can enjoy classic beverages throughout the day. The bar’s tropical aesthetic complements the surrounding pool environment, offering visual continuity across the venue.

MSC Cruises has positioned Coral Cove Bar as a casual retreat focused on socialising and unwinding, with a straightforward drinks menu emphasising accessibility and convenience for pool-goers. This approach contrasts with the more elaborate cocktail programmes found at other bars aboard the ship, recognising that poolside venues require different service models suited to guests in swimwear seeking refreshment between swimming sessions.

The Philippine coral reef theme represents part of MSC World Asia’s broader Asian-inspired design narrative, ensuring thematic consistency whilst allowing individual venues to reference specific regional elements. This design strategy creates visual variety across the ship’s public spaces whilst maintaining an overarching conceptual framework.

Pan Asian Bar Showcases Southeast Asian Beverages And Craft Beer

Overlooking the Promenade, Pan Asian Bar forms an integral component of the recently unveiled Pan Asian Street Food restaurant, extending the venue’s culinary themes into its beverage programme. The bar will offer Southeast Asian-inspired cocktails and beverages that complement the restaurant’s food offerings, creating a cohesive dining and drinking experience.

Beer enthusiasts will find particular appeal in the bar’s selection of Asian beers from various countries throughout the continent, representing regional brewing traditions often underrepresented in cruise ship bars. Additionally, the venue will serve a specially crafted draught beer created exclusively for the space, called “Oceanic Asian,” which features oriental notes designed to pair with the restaurant’s flavour profiles.

The bar’s position overlooking the Promenade ensures visibility and accessibility for passengers moving through one of the ship’s primary thoroughfares. This placement strategy encourages spontaneous visits whilst serving guests dining at the adjacent Pan Asian Street Food restaurant.

Mediterranean Debut Precedes Caribbean Redeployment

Following its November 2025 delivery, MSC World Asia will commence seven-night Mediterranean sailings beginning on 4th December 2025. These inaugural itineraries will visit popular ports including Barcelona, Marseille, Messina, Civitavecchia (serving Rome), Naples and Valletta, offering passengers access to historic cities and cultural landmarks across Southern Europe.

The Mediterranean deployment allows MSC Cruises to position the ship in proximity to its European source markets during the winter season, when demand for Mediterranean cruising remains strong despite cooler temperatures. The itinerary selection balances major tourist destinations with convenient logistics, creating efficient port rotations that maximise time in port whilst maintaining predictable scheduling.

MSC Cruises recently announced a significant deployment change for MSC World Asia, moving the vessel to South Caribbean operations for the winter 2027–28 season. This redeployment represents a strategic shift that will see the ship offering seven-night and 14-night itineraries with embarkation options in Fort-de-France (Martinique), Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Bridgetown (Barbados).

World-Class Series Continues MSC’s Fleet Expansion

World-Class Series Continues MSC's Fleet Expansion

MSC World Asia represents the third vessel in MSC Cruises’ World-class series, following MSC World Europa and MSC World America. The class introduced innovative design features including the aft-positioned “World Promenade,” an indoor-outdoor space that has become a signature element distinguishing World-class ships from previous MSC vessels.

At approximately 215,000 gross tonnes, World-class ships rank among the largest cruise vessels operating globally, offering passenger capacity exceeding 6,000 guests in double occupancy. This scale enables MSC Cruises to incorporate diverse venue types and extensive entertainment options whilst maintaining per-passenger space ratios comparable to smaller vessels through efficient design.

The class’s LNG propulsion system represents MSC Cruises’ commitment to environmental technology, utilising liquefied natural gas as primary fuel to reduce emissions compared to conventional marine diesel. LNG propulsion has become increasingly common across new cruise ship builds, reflecting industry-wide efforts to improve environmental performance whilst regulatory frameworks continue evolving.

The development of distinct bar and lounge concepts for MSC World Asia demonstrates MSC Cruises’ focus on creating differentiated experiences across venues, moving beyond generic bars towards themed spaces with specific identities. This approach has become standard practice across contemporary cruise ship design, with lines recognising that passengers value variety and choice in their onboard social venues.
