AIDAperla Breaks Moorings in Strong Winds, Strikes Le Havre Quay

AIDA Cruises’ AIDAperla broke free from her berth in Le Havre, France, on 8th September 2026. This occurred after strong winds severed the ship’s forward mooring lines, causing the vessel to drift backwards and strike a quay wall.

No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, but the 3,286-guest vessel missed her next scheduled port call in Zeebrugge whilst undergoing inspections and awaiting clearance from the classification society.

The incident unfolded around 4:00 p.m. local time. AIDAperla was berthed at the Port of Le Havre during a 7-night cruise that had departed Hamburg on 5th September.

Weather Underground records indicate wind gusts reached approximately 35 miles per hour during Tuesday afternoon, creating hazardous conditions in the harbour. Witness videos shared on social media captured the moments immediately following the mooring line failure.

The footage shows the 125,572-tonne vessel drifting backwards after breaking free, with her stern making contact with the quay infrastructure. The impact appeared to occur relatively slowly as the ship was pushed by the wind, but the sheer size of the vessel meant even slow-speed contact could cause significant damage.

Gangways Torn Away as Vessel Drifts in Harbour

During the incident, both passenger gangways connecting the ship to the dock were torn away from their moorings as AIDAperla drifted. Photographs shared by passengers aboard the vessel show one gangway hanging precariously from the port side, creating a floating hazard in the harbour.

The gangway damage presented immediate logistical challenges for port authorities and the cruise line. Approximately 500 AIDAperla guests were ashore on organised excursions at the time of the incident and found themselves temporarily unable to return to their ship.

The floating debris also posed navigation risks to other vessels in the busy French port, which handles both commercial shipping and cruise traffic year-round.

Port Operations Suspended as Emergency Response Mobilised

HAROPA PORT, the authority managing Le Havre, temporarily closed harbour operations whilst emergency crews worked to secure the wayward vessel and clear obstructions from the water. Multiple tugboats were deployed to assist AIDAperla.

They worked to halt her drift and manoeuvre her back towards her original berth position. The port closure affected other vessels as well.

TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 3, which was also docked in Le Havre at the time, had to be held in position by tugboats to prevent a similar incident. The precautionary measures resulted in a two-hour departure delay for Mein Schiff 3 as port authorities worked to stabilise conditions and ensure safe navigation.

By 9:22 p.m., HAROPA PORT issued a statement confirming that AIDAperla had been successfully secured at her berth once again. Passengers who had been stranded ashore were safely boarding the vessel, and no injuries had been reported either aboard the ship or on the dock.

Navigation through the port gradually resumed as crews continued to assess the situation.

Comprehensive Inspections Required Before Departure Clearance

AIDA Cruises confirmed in official statements that the vessel made contact with the quay and is now undergoing thorough inspection by both the cruise line’s technicians and local authorities. The company emphasised passenger and crew safety as its top priority whilst assessments continue.

According to German media reports, AIDAperla also requires formal clearance from the responsible classification society before she can depart Le Havre.

Classification societies are independent organisations that establish and maintain technical standards for the construction and operation of ships. Their approval is mandatory following any incident that could affect a vessel’s structural integrity or seaworthiness.

The inspection process includes a detailed examination of the ship’s hull, particularly the stern section that made contact with the quay. Engineers must assess whether any plating was compromised, check for potential stress fractures, and verify that all systems remain fully operational.

Rudders, propellers, and steering mechanisms receive particular scrutiny following stern impacts.

Zeebrugge Call Cancelled as Ship Remains in French Port

AIDAperla had been scheduled to depart Le Havre at 8:00 p.m. on 8th September and continue to Zeebrugge, Belgium, for a port call on 9th September. Instead, the ship remained berthed in Le Havre whilst inspections were completed and necessary approvals obtained.

AIDA Cruises subsequently cancelled the Zeebrugge call, disappointing passengers who had anticipated exploring the Belgian coastal city or participating in excursions to nearby Bruges. The cancellation represents a significant itinerary disruption for guests aboard.

Zeebrugge serves as a popular gateway to Bruges, one of Europe’s most picturesque mediaeval cities, renowned for its canals, cobblestone streets, and well-preserved architecture. Many passengers would have booked the cruise specifically to visit this destination.

As of the latest information available, AIDAperla’s next scheduled port call in Rotterdam, Netherlands, remains set for 10th September. No further confirmed itinerary adjustments have been announced. The ship is still expected to return to Hamburg as originally planned on 12th September, completing the 7-night voyage despite the Le Havre incident.

AIDAperla’s Service History and Fleet Position

AIDAperla entered service in 2017 as part of AIDA Cruises’ Sphinx-class, which represents the German cruise line’s largest and most modern vessel category. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan, the ship measures 300 metres in length and features 1,643 passenger cabins across 15 decks.

The vessel can accommodate 3,286 passengers at double occupancy, with a maximum capacity of approximately 3,700 guests when all berths are filled. She is staffed by roughly 900 international crew members who maintain operations and service standards across the ship’s extensive facilities.

These include multiple restaurants and bars, expansive spa and fitness facilities, numerous entertainment venues, and the distinctive AIDA Beach Club area that has become a signature feature of the line’s newer ships.

AIDAperla primarily operates Northern European and Mediterranean itineraries throughout the year. During summer months, she typically focuses on routes visiting the Baltic Sea, Norwegian fjords, and Western European ports. Winter seasons see her repositioned to warmer Mediterranean waters, calling at destinations throughout the region.

Carnival Corporation’s German Market Leadership

Carnival Corporation's German Market Leadership

AIDA Cruises serves as Carnival Corporation’s German-market brand, holding the largest market share for cruise holidays among German-speaking passengers. The company has built its reputation on offering casual, active holidays with a distinctly German atmosphere aboard ship.

This includes German-language entertainment, cuisine tailored to Central European tastes, and itineraries designed for the preferences of German travellers. The AIDA fleet currently comprises 12 ships ranging from the smaller AIDAcara, which entered service in 1996, to the newest vessels in the Hyperion and Helios class.

The company has historically been an innovator in European cruising, pioneering the “club ship” concept that emphasises informal dining, active pursuits, and a younger demographic than traditionally associated with cruising.

Carnival Corporation, AIDA’s parent company, is the world’s largest cruise operator, with a portfolio including nine cruise line brands serving guests across every major market globally. The conglomerate’s scale means incidents affecting any of its vessels receive significant attention from industry observers, maritime authorities, and the travelling public.

Weather-Related Mooring Incidents Continue Industry Challenge

Mooring line failures during adverse weather conditions represent an ongoing challenge for the cruise industry. This is particularly true as climate patterns produce more frequent extreme weather events.

Modern cruise ships, whilst featuring advanced stabilisation and propulsion systems, remain vulnerable when berthed. This is especially true if wind speeds exceed the capacity of mooring equipment to hold them securely.

Ports worldwide have implemented enhanced procedures for monitoring weather conditions. This includes adjusting berth assignments or requiring additional tugboat support when forecasts indicate challenging conditions.

However, wind events can develop quickly or prove stronger than anticipated, sometimes overwhelming standard precautions. The AIDAperla incident joins several similar occurrences in recent years.

Strong winds have caused berthed cruise ships to break free from moorings. In most cases, as with AIDAperla, prompt tugboat response and professional harbour management prevent serious consequences. However, itinerary disruptions and inspection requirements are common results.

Maritime safety protocols require conservative approaches following any contact incident. Even when visible damage appears minimal, the potential for unseen structural stress or compromised watertight integrity necessitates thorough professional assessment before a vessel returns to service.

Passengers Face Itinerary Disruption and Compensation Questions

Guests aboard AIDAperla now face altered cruise plans, with the Zeebrugge call completely eliminated from their voyage. Under European Union passenger rights regulations and AIDA Cruises’ own policies, passengers may be entitled to compensation or onboard credits when scheduled ports are missed due to operational issues.

The specific compensation arrangements will likely depend on whether AIDA Cruises classifies the incident as falling under force majeure provisions. These typically exempt cruise lines from compensation obligations when circumstances are beyond their control.

Weather events generally qualify as force majeure, though the specific legal interpretations can vary. Some passengers aboard were likely booked for back-to-back voyages, combining the current 7-night sailing with the subsequent 7-night cruise departing Hamburg on 12th September for a combined 14-night holiday.

AIDA Cruises commonly markets these combined itineraries, allowing guests to experience extended voyages with varied ports of call. These passengers face particular uncertainty as they await confirmation that inspections will be completed in time for the next scheduled departure.

The following voyage is set to visit Norwegian ports including Bergen, Nordfjordeid, Alesund, and Stavanger before returning to Hamburg on 19th September. Any delay in clearing AIDAperla for service would create cascading effects for those passengers and could potentially impact subsequent sailings as well.

Carnival’s New Excel-Class Cruise Ship Is Officially Open for Bookings Out of Texas

Bookings are now open for Carnival Cruise Line’s final Excel-class ship that is set to sail from Galveston, Texas, in 2028.

Carnival Tropicale
Carnival Tropicale Digital Rendering

Carnival’s Excel-class ships have been a big hit for the cruise line, ever since the first ship in the class, Mardi Gras, came out in 2020.

Carnival Tropicale, the final ship in the class, is officially on the schedule, and she is set to debut in the Lone Star State and join another Excel ship that has already been sailing out of Galveston, Carnival Jubilee.

These ships can accommodate 5,228 passengers at double capacity and 6,631 at max capacity. So, that’s a lot of Texas residents who can sail out of the local port for the cruise line.

Here are the new sailings just opened up on Tropicale:

The name Carnival Tropicale isn’t actually new to the fleet. Back in 1982, Carnival launched the original Tropicale, and it was the very first ship purpose-built for Carnival rather than converted from an older ocean vessel.

She was around 36,600 gross tons and carried about 1,000 passengers. Fast forward to today, and this new mega-ship will come in over 183,000 gross tons and carry more than five times the passengers.

Galveston is really on the move lately, attracting larger ships and building newer terminals.

And Carnival’s commitment to Galveston has been growing too. Carnival was actually the first cruise line to operate year-round sailings out of Galveston way back in 2000 with Celebration.

To celebrate a new ship coming to Texas, Carnival is even painting the iconic Star of Texas right onto the bow, just like on Jubilee.

Over in Papenburg, Germany, where the ship is being built at MEYER WERFT shipyard, the team hosted a western-themed party with custom cowboy hard hats and Texas barbecue to celebrate the occasion.

What’s New on Tropicale?

For foodies, Carnival is debuting The Next Course concept lineup, which includes Uku Lei Lei (Hawaiian-Asian fusion) and Fetaccine (a Greek and Italian combo), right alongside Emeril Lagasse’s popular Emeril’s Coastal Seafood.

When she arrives in April 2028, Carnival Tropicale will run 4- to 8-day Caribbean itineraries, visiting ports like Cozumel, Nassau, Progreso, Celebration Key, RelaxAway, and Isla Tropicale.

Passenger Dies Following Pool Accident On Sun Princess

A Minnesota pastor has died several weeks after sustaining catastrophic spinal injuries in a pool accident aboard Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess during a Mediterranean cruise in August 2025. Stephen Junker, 58, from Elbow Lake, was paralysed in the incident and passed away on 4th September 2025 despite emergency surgery and intensive medical care.

Sun Princess

Stephen Junker fell on Sunday, 16th August 2025, and was discovered unresponsive in one of the ship’s pools whilst travelling with family to celebrate his son’s recent wedding. The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear, including whether Junker was in the pool prior to the accident or fell from the deck into the water.

Sun Princess features five separate pool areas spread across multiple decks. These include two pools on the Lido Deck (Deck 17), an indoor-outdoor pool beneath the distinctive Dome structure (also Deck 17), the adults-only Sanctuary Pool (Deck 18), and the WakeView Pool positioned at the stern on Deck 8. Princess Cruises has not disclosed which pool was involved in the incident.

Emergency Evacuation In Naples Led To Immediate Surgery

According to information shared on the family’s GoFundMe fundraising page, Junker was evacuated from Sun Princess in Naples, Italy, by the Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera). He was transported via boat to a local hospital where medical staff admitted him to intensive care with severe compression at the C3-C4 level of his cervical spinal column.

The injured passenger underwent emergency surgery on 17th August to relieve pressure on his spinal cord. Whilst surgeons successfully completed the procedure, Junker was diagnosed as quadriplegic due to the extent of his injuries. Medical teams also treated him for a lung infection believed to have resulted from his near-drowning experience in the pool.

Complex Medical Repatriation Coordinated By Family

Over the following days, Junker’s family worked to navigate the considerable medical, logistical, and financial challenges involved in arranging his transport back to the United States. On 23rd August, he was flown from Italy to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, one of America’s premier medical facilities known for treating complex spinal injuries and neurological conditions.

At the Mayo Clinic, Junker underwent additional diagnostic testing and treatment as specialists evaluated his condition. The family had hoped for potential rehabilitation options and assessment of long-term care needs following his paralysis. Tragically, medical examinations revealed additional injuries that doctors determined were untreatable.

Pastor Passed Away Surrounded By Loved Ones

Stephen Junker died on the evening of Friday, 4th September 2025, with family and friends at his bedside. The pastor had survived for nearly three weeks following the initial accident, enduring two international medical evacuations, emergency surgery, and intensive care treatment across two countries.

The cruise was intended as a joyful family celebration following his son’s wedding, though there is no indication the wedding ceremony itself took place aboard the vessel. Instead, the voyage ended in tragedy for the Minnesota family.

Princess Cruises Maintains Privacy Protocol On Passenger Incident

Princess Cruises Maintains Privacy Protocol On Passenger Incident

Princess Cruises has not issued any public statement regarding Junker’s accident, injuries, or subsequent death. This approach aligns with standard industry practice, as cruise lines typically refrain from commenting on individual passenger incidents to protect guest privacy and avoid potential legal complications.

The lack of public comment does not indicate indifference but rather reflects established protocols that cruise companies follow when accidents occur aboard their vessels. Internal investigations are standard procedure, though findings are rarely shared publicly unless required by regulatory authorities or legal proceedings.

Mediterranean Itinerary Details And Ship Departure Information

Sun Princess had departed from Civitavecchia, the port serving Rome, on 15th August 2025, just one day before the tragic accident. The 4,300-passenger vessel was operating one of Princess Cruises’ Mediterranean itineraries that call at ports across Italy, Greece, Turkey, Montenegro, Spain, and France.

Because Princess employs multiple embarkation and disembarkation ports throughout its European season, it remains unknown whether Junker and his family had booked a 7-night, 14-night, or 21-night sailing. The flexibility of Mediterranean cruise itineraries allows passengers to join and leave the ship at various ports, making it difficult to determine the family’s original cruise length before the emergency evacuation in Naples.

Troubled History Continues For Princess’s Newest Sphere-Class Ship

This tragic incident represents the latest in a series of difficulties that have plagued Sun Princess since before her entry into service. The 175,500-gross-tonne vessel experienced a troubled debut when she joined the Princess Cruises fleet in February 2024, becoming the first of the line’s new Sphere-class ships.

Sun Princess suffered significant delays prior to her inaugural sailing, which was originally scheduled to depart Barcelona on 8th February 2024. The cruise line was forced to cancel that maiden voyage entirely, disappointing hundreds of guests who had booked the historic first sailing. Additional cancellations followed before the ship finally began welcoming passengers on 28th February 2024, three weeks behind schedule.

Even after guests began boarding, Sun Princess could not deliver the complete experience promised in marketing materials. Key signature features remained unavailable for months following her debut, frustrating passengers who had specifically booked the new vessel to experience these innovative attractions. In July 2024, Princess Cruises confirmed that three major outdoor activity installations – the RollGlider zip line, the Coastal Climb climbing wall, and the ropes course – would not be opening at all. The cruise line stated it was unable to accept delivery of these facilities, though no detailed explanation was provided for the failure.

Additional Setbacks Including Hurricane Delays And Crew Tragedy

Additional Setbacks Including Hurricane Delays And Crew Tragedy

Following her maiden Mediterranean season in 2024, Sun Princess was scheduled to cross the Atlantic Ocean for her debut Caribbean season operating from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, her arrival in the United States was delayed by several days due to Hurricane Milton, which disrupted shipping lanes and port operations along Florida’s coast in October 2024.

More tragically, on 20th August 2025 – just four days after Junker’s accident – a crew member went overboard from Sun Princess at approximately 11:00 p.m. local time. The circumstances of that incident have not been publicly disclosed, but crew overboard situations represent some of the most serious emergencies that can occur aboard cruise ships.

Search and rescue operations are immediately launched, though recovery efforts face significant challenges given the vast expanse of open ocean and the time that often elapses before a person is discovered missing.

Overboard incidents, whilst relatively rare given the millions of passengers and crew who sail annually, do occur across the cruise industry. They prompt immediate emergency responses and often result in investigations by maritime authorities and the vessel’s flag state.

Industry Context For Shipboard Accidents And Medical Capabilities

Accidents aboard cruise ships, whilst uncommon relative to the enormous number of passengers who sail each year, do occur and can result in serious injuries. Modern cruise vessels are equipped with medical centres staffed by qualified doctors and nurses capable of handling emergencies, but they are not full hospitals and cannot provide the level of care available at major medical facilities ashore.

Spinal injuries represent some of the most challenging medical emergencies at sea due to the specialised equipment and expertise required for treatment. Ships’ medical staff can stabilise patients and provide initial care, but serious cases typically require evacuation to shore-based hospitals, as occurred with Junker.

The costs associated with medical evacuations, especially those involving helicopter or Coast Guard assistance, international hospital stays, and medical repatriation flights, can easily reach hundreds of thousands of pounds.

This financial burden underscores the importance of comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers cruise travel, including medical evacuation and repatriation. Many standard travel insurance policies contain exclusions or limitations that may not adequately cover the unique risks and costs associated with maritime travel.

Sphere-Class Ships Represent Major Investment For Princess Fleet

Sphere-Class Ships Represent Major Investment For Princess Fleet

Despite the challenges Sun Princess has faced, she represents a significant investment in Princess Cruises’ future. The Sphere-class ships are the largest vessels ever built for the Princess fleet, accommodating 4,300 guests at double occupancy with additional berths available, bringing maximum capacity to over 5,000 passengers.

Sun Princess was constructed at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, continuing Princess’s long relationship with the renowned Italian shipbuilder. Her sister ship, Star Princess, joined the fleet in 2025, whilst a third Sphere-class vessel remains on order.

These ships incorporate Princess’s signature features alongside new innovations designed to attract both loyal Princess passengers and first-time cruisers. The vessels feature the distinctive Sphere-shaped dome structure that has become their namesake, housing entertainment venues, dining spaces, and the indoor-outdoor pool.

Multiple dining venues, extensive public spaces, and Princess’s traditional focus on destination-rich itineraries form the core of the Sphere-class experience.

Our thoughts remain with Stephen Junker’s family, friends, and congregation as they mourn this tragic loss. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unexpected events that can occur during what should be celebratory family holidays, and the importance of comprehensive travel preparation including adequate insurance coverage.

Carnival Opens Bookings for Tropicale’s 2028 Texas Debut

Carnival Cruise Line has officially opened reservations for Carnival Tropicale, the fifth and final Excel-class vessel, which will homeport from Galveston, Texas, beginning 15th April 2028.

The announcement coincides with the ship’s steel cutting ceremony at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, marking the start of physical construction on this highly anticipated addition to the fleet.

Carnival Tropicale

Meyer Werft hosted a Texas-themed celebration to mark the steel cutting milestone for Carnival Tropicale, bringing a taste of the Lone Star State to northern Germany.

Shipyard crew members donned custom hard hats and cowboy attire whilst enjoying authentic Texas-style barbecue, creating an atmosphere befitting the vessel’s future homeport.

A horse even made a special appearance for photo opportunities, though Carnival has not confirmed any official equine role aboard the ship.

The festivities underscored the significance of this vessel as the final ship in the successful Excel-class series, which has proven immensely popular with cruisers since Mardi Gras launched the class in 2021.

New Leadership At Meyer Werft Celebrates Partnership With Carnival

André Walter, who assumed the role of CEO at MEYER WERFT GmbH on 1st July 2026, presided over his first construction celebration with Carnival Tropicale’s steel cutting.

His remarks highlighted the enduring collaboration between the German shipbuilder and one of the world’s largest cruise operators.

“I am delighted to experience my first construction celebration as the new CEO of MEYER WERFT,” Walter stated during the ceremony.

“Carnival Tropicale is already the fifth Excel-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line, a successful and highly popular series that reflects our long-standing partnership with Carnival.”

The Excel-class collaboration has transformed Carnival’s fleet with vessels exceeding 180,000 gross tonnes and carrying approximately 5,200 passengers at double occupancy.

Each ship features innovative zones and attractions whilst maintaining the line’s signature “Fun Ship” atmosphere that has defined the brand for decades.

Inaugural Sailing Showcases New Paradise Collection Destinations

Carnival Tropicale’s maiden voyage will embark on 15th April 2028, offering a six-night Western Caribbean itinerary from Galveston.

The carefully crafted route provides passengers with an ideal introduction to both the new ship and Carnival’s exclusive private destinations.

The inaugural sailing begins with a full day at sea on Sunday, 16th April, allowing guests to explore the vessel’s extensive amenities and dining venues.

On Monday, 17th April, Tropicale will call at Cozumel, Mexico, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing opportunities to explore Mayan ruins, snorkel pristine reefs, or simply relax on beautiful beaches.

The highlight arrives on Tuesday, 18th April, when Carnival Tropicale visits her namesake destination, Isla Tropicale in Roatán, Honduras, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Formerly known as Mahogany Bay, this port was rebranded as part of Carnival’s Paradise Collection of enhanced destinations.

Two additional sea days follow before the ship returns to Galveston on Friday, 21st April.

Diverse Itinerary Options From Four To Eight Nights

Diverse Itinerary Options From Four To Eight Nights

Beyond the inaugural sailing, Carnival Tropicale will offer a varied deployment schedule from Galveston featuring four-, five-, six-, and eight-night voyages to Western Caribbean and Bahamas destinations.

This range provides flexibility for guests with different holiday schedules and budgets whilst maximising the ship’s appeal to the crucial Texas market.

The itineraries will showcase Carnival’s Paradise Collection, which includes Celebration Key in the Bahamas, RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Isla Tropicale in Roatán, and Puerta Maya in Cozumel.

These exclusive or enhanced ports offer experiences specifically designed for Carnival guests, from pristine beaches to cultural attractions and water sports.

Depending on sailing length and departure dates, Carnival Tropicale will also visit popular ports including Nassau in the Bahamas, Progreso on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and additional calls to Cozumel.

The variety ensures repeat cruisers can experience different combinations whilst first-time guests enjoy Carnival’s signature destinations.

Grand Central Atrium Features Immersive Tropical Design Elements

One of the most striking new details revealed concerns Carnival Tropicale’s multi-storey Grand Central Atrium, the beating heart of the vessel where passengers gather, socialise, and experience entertainment.

Recent renderings showcase tropical scenery displayed on integrated LED banners and screens throughout the space, creating a bright, immersive environment that embodies the ship’s name and theme.

This technological approach represents an evolution from previous Excel-class vessels, each of which has featured distinct atrium designs reflecting their individual identities.

Mardi Gras celebrates New Orleans heritage, Carnival Celebration honours the line’s 50th anniversary, and Carnival Jubilee embraces Texas pride – now Tropicale will transport guests to a lush tropical paradise from the moment they step aboard.

The multi-deck space serves as the ship’s social hub, featuring bars, entertainment, and gathering spaces where passengers naturally congregate throughout their voyage.

By creating an immersive tropical atmosphere through advanced LED technology, Carnival appears to be enhancing the environmental storytelling that has become a hallmark of modern cruise ship design.

Sunsation Point Waterpark Delivers Extended Evening Splash Hours

Carnival Tropicale will feature the multi-deck Sunsation Point at the ship’s aft, serving as the hub for family aquatic entertainment.

The area will house Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, featuring six waterslides and multiple splash zones designed for young cruisers and families seeking refreshing fun under the Caribbean sun.

Significantly, Carnival has announced that Sunsation Point will offer extended evening hours on select days, allowing guests to enjoy the waterpark longer than typically available on most cruise ships.

This guest-focused enhancement addresses a common request from families who find daytime waterpark hours sometimes limited by port calls and dining schedules.

The WaterWorks Ultra designation indicates the most advanced iteration of Carnival’s popular waterpark concept, which debuted on Carnival Splendor in 2008 and has evolved considerably over subsequent ships.

The Excel-class vessels have particularly showcased ambitious waterpark designs, with slides including the high-speed Turning Tides raft slide, which has been confirmed for Carnival Tropicale.

Innovative Dining Venues Span Global Culinary Traditions

Carnival Tropicale will introduce several new and innovative dining concepts showcasing global flavours across multiple speciality venues.

These restaurants represent the line’s commitment to elevating the culinary experience whilst maintaining approachable pricing and atmosphere.

Uku Lei Lei will offer Hawaiian-Asian fusion cuisine, blending Pacific Island ingredients and preparations with Asian culinary techniques and flavours.

This represents a fresh concept for Carnival’s fleet, tapping into the popularity of poke bowls, Pacific seafood, and tropical presentations that have become increasingly mainstream.

Fetaccine will feature Greek and Italian tastes, likely combining Mediterranean cuisines that share common ingredients like olive oil, fresh seafood, tomatoes, and herbs whilst representing distinct regional traditions.

Meanwhile, Emeril’s Coastal Seafood will continue Carnival’s partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, focusing on stunning seafood preparations that showcase the chef’s Louisiana-influenced style and commitment to fresh ingredients.

These venues join the extensive complimentary dining options that Excel-class ships are known for, including the multi-venue Lido Marketplace, elegant main dining rooms, and Guy’s Burger Joint, amongst numerous other choices.

Golden Era Of Showbusiness Inspires Entertainment Spaces

Whilst many details about Carnival Tropicale remain under wraps, Carnival Cruise Line has offered intriguing hints about the ship’s entertainment programme and dedicated spaces.

The cruise line references “the golden era of showbusiness” as inspiration for exclusive areas aboard Tropicale, though specific venues and shows have not yet been confirmed.

This evocative phrase could reference numerous periods in entertainment history, from the glamorous Hollywood studio system of the 1930s and 1940s to the Broadway golden age or the Las Vegas showroom era.

Previous Excel-class vessels have featured innovative entertainment spaces including the Punchliner Comedy Club, Piano Bar 88, and various lounges and nightclubs.

Additional confirmed amenities include The Vault Retrocade, an arcade and gaming space, and Fairway 66 Mini Golf, continuing Carnival’s tradition of offering miniature golf courses aboard its larger vessels.

These family-friendly attractions complement the waterpark and provide entertainment options for all ages and weather conditions.

Executive Leadership Emphasises Texas Market Opportunity

Executive Leadership Emphasises Texas Market Opportunity

Ben Clement, executive vice president of maritime and new builds at Carnival Cruise Line, emphasised the significance of bringing Tropicale to the crucial Galveston market.

His comments highlight how the ship will strengthen Carnival’s already dominant position sailing from Texas ports.

“From innovative attractions and dining to unforgettable destinations throughout the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico, Carnival Tropicale will bring an exciting new vacation option to Texas when she debuts in 2028,” Clement stated.

The executive’s remarks underscore Carnival’s long-term commitment to Texas, where the line has invested heavily in terminal infrastructure and vessel deployments.

Galveston has emerged as one of Carnival’s most important homeports, currently hosting multiple year-round ships and serving passengers throughout Texas and neighbouring states.

The deployment of a state-of-the-art Excel-class vessel demonstrates confidence in the market’s continued growth and the strong demand from drive-to cruisers who prefer convenient embarkation over flying to Florida or other departure ports.

Like her sister ship Carnival Jubilee, which also sails from Galveston, Carnival Tropicale will proudly display the Star of Texas on her bow, cementing the vessel’s connection to the Lone Star State.

This tradition began with Jubilee and now continues with the final Excel-class ship, creating a distinctive visual identity for Carnival’s Texas-based fleet members.

Everything is bigger in Texas, and beginning April 15, 2028, Carnival Tropicale will bring a whole new level of fun to Galveston. As the newest ship sailing from Texas, Carnival Tropicale will proudly display the Star of Texas on her bow, honoring her connection to the Lone Star State. The ship will offer four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises to connect guests to Carnival’s exclusive Paradise Collection destinations, including Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Isla Tropicale and Puerta Maya, as well as popular Caribbean ports like Progreso and Nassau.

“Today marks an exciting day for Carnival Tropicale as guests can now begin planning their vacations aboard this incredible new ship,” said Ben Clement, EVP of maritime and new builds at Carnival Cruise Line. “From innovative attractions and dining to unforgettable destinations throughout the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico, Carnival Tropicale will bring an exciting new vacation option to Texas when she debuts in 2028.”

Bringing Texas to Papenburg

As reservations opened for Carnival Tropicale, Carnival Cruise Line and MEYER WERFT hosted a western-themed celebration honoring the ship’s future home and Carnival’s longstanding connection to Texas. Carnival and MEYER WERFT leaders donned custom cowboy hard hats and western attire amid Texas-inspired décor while the shipyard team enjoyed Texas-style barbecue.

“I am delighted to experience my first construction celebration as the new CEO of MEYER WERFT,” said André Walter, who has served as CEO of MEYER WERFT GmbH since July 1, 2026. “Carnival Tropicale is already the fifth Excel-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line, a successful and highly popular series that reflects our long-standing partnership with Carnival.”

A New Take on Family Fun

Carnival Tropicale is the fifth and final ship in the Excel class, offering guests the class’s newest features for experiencing Carnival’s signature fun at sea. One of the ship’s highlights will be Sunsation Point, a vibrant, multi-deck family fun zone designed to keep guests entertained from day to night. This area is anchored by Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, the most family-friendly water park at sea, featuring six waterslides, including SunSoaker, Turning Tides, Racing Currents and splash areas designed for younger cruisers.

Guests can also enjoy a variety of outdoor and indoor activities, including a redesigned Fairway 66 Mini Golf course inspired by Route 66, sports courts, the Treehouse Adventure Trail, featuring netted pathways and obstacles, and new arcade spaces, such as The Vault Retrocade, which blends classic favorites with modern gaming experiences. As the sun sets, the excitement continues with special evening activities and extended waterpark hours.

The fun continues at the table, where Carnival Tropicale will feature The Next Course of dining concepts, bringing flavors from around the world. Guests will be able to enjoy Uku Lei Lei, offering Hawaiian-inspired cuisine with Asian influences; Fetaccine, blending Greek and Italian flavors; and Emeril’s Coastal Seafood, showcasing seafood dishes inspired by America’s coastlines and created in partnership with Carnival’s Chief Culinary Officer Chef Emeril Lagasse.

Inspired by the Golden Era of Show Businesses

Carnival Tropicale will also introduce new entertainment experiences and exclusive spaces inspired by the golden era of show business. Additional details about the ship’s entertainment and other experiences will be revealed in the months ahead, giving guests more to look forward to.

We Lost Our Disney Cruise Because of a Travel Agent Mistake

Travel agents can be lifesavers in certain situations. But they are human too, and it pays to verify a few details if you want to make sure your vacation goes according to plan.

In this case, a Disney cruise reservation was canceled because one of the most important parts of the booking process was mishandled.

Disney Wish cruise ship
Disney Wish

A Silver Castaway Club member and family were all set for the only 7-night Canada cruise currently scheduled out of New York on Disney Cruise Line. The ship: Disney Wish.

They worked with their usual Disney travel agent and locked in two guaranteed family veranda cabins.

The booking process was a bit chaotic, but the agent confirmed the rooms were secured last week. The cruiser, who posted the entire ordeal on Reddit, handed over a credit card for the deposit and thought everything was taken care of.

Then came the call.

“This morning, I received a call from her informing me that she failed to send our deposit on to DCL, so both rooms had been canceled. Apparently, she’d set a calendar reminder for the wrong date. Of course, as you all know, that voyage is entirely sold out now (except for the Tower Suite, which now shows a $60k price tag for the week).”

The person posting this story said they had received an invoice, submitted the card (which was never charged), and had confirmation the agent received it.

“It’s incredibly disappointing that we did everything right… and through a clerical error on the part of the person who gets paid to help us with these things, now we are SOL.”

The agent apologized and promised to keep trying, but sailings like this sell out fast and are even harder to book if too much time after the final payment date has already passed.

From years of booking my own cruises through many cruise line websites, this is exactly the kind of mistake that should never happen and is completely preventable.

Once an agent confirms rooms are held and takes payment information, the deposit needs to go through that same day, ideally right then and there on the Disney travel agent portal or over the phone with DCL.

Sure, it’s easy to say in hindsight, but holds expire and cabins get booked fast on popular sailings that are only offered one time.

Setting a calendar reminder for the wrong date is the sort of mistake that separates a reliable agent from one who ends up just creating more stress.

The Internet Reacted Exactly How You’d Expect

The post on social media quickly racked up hundreds of comments (now over 300) in just the first 24 hours, and the consensus was pretty clear that this was a completely avoidable mistake.

Many were surprised the deposit wasn’t processed the same day the credit card info was provided.

“Granted I’m not a TA and I am aware TA have multiple customers, but I would think that as soon as you gave your TA your credit card info to make the deposits on the rooms, the TA should have started the transaction that day instead of scheduling for a different day to do it.”

Another comment stated: “Why in the world did the TA not make the deposit immediately upon receiving the credit card number? I don’t understand waiting to do so.”

A former travel agent gave some practical advice that many others shared as well: agents should charge the card directly on the Disney site or over the phone with DCL so the charge comes from Disney, then immediately send the confirmation number.

Without that confirmation number, assume you don’t have a reservation.

In my experience, the moment you walk away from a booking without a confirmation number (or email) from the cruise line, you don’t actually have a booking. Good agents know this and treat the deposit like the most important step of the entire process.

Plenty of people shared that this kind of error is why they stopped using agents for Disney Cruises (or most cruises) altogether.

“TAs come downvote me – but no one needs a TA for DCL. A 5 years old could log on and book a cruise if you gave them a credit card, it’s that easy.”

Others went further: “I’ll go a step further and say that no one needs a TA for most trips. It is so easy to research and book vacation destinations now with the internet… I personally would never put my vacation in someone else’s hands.”

One cruiser who’s done 22 sailings (nine with Disney) and helps family book theirs put it this way: “My travel agent could make a mistake like the one OP experienced, but I won’t. Or if I do, at least I can live with the knowledge it was my own dumb fault.”

It’s true that cruise lines have made it easier than ever for guests to book their own cruises and manage their own sailings.

Disney Cruise Line is one of the easiest major cruise lines to book yourself. For straightforward family veranda bookings like this, the value an average agent adds is pretty much limited to onboard credit or the convenience of not having to click the buttons yourself.

That being said, this is not an anti-travel-agent rambling. Especially for complicated bookings with many cabins reserved, a travel agent can save you a ton of headaches and catch things you might miss (a good one that is).

One former agent admitted the anxiety of making exactly this kind of mistake used to keep them up at night. Their advice? Keep watching the sailing.

People cancel, especially closer to final payment. Cabins can and do pop back up.

Bottom Line

Mistakes happen. Travel agents are human, and popular sailings move fast.  I know, this isn’t earth shattering information here.

But when the entire point of using a professional is reliability on the most important details, a missed deposit on a sold-out cruise is a tough one to justify.

But who knows, maybe this can be a lesson for someone else. After all, I’d rather learn from someone else’s mistakes than my own.

The key takeaway is to get that confirmation number right after payment info has been sent over. Assume you don’t have a cruise booked until this happens.

Holland America Line Cancels Cruises to Move Up Ship’s Renovation

This past spring, Holland America Line announced its largest fleet upgrade ever, a $500 million project called Holland America Evolution that will upgrade and add new features to six cruise ships.

Oosterdam was the first ship to receive these upgrades in late 2027. Now, Holland America Line has canceled a few cruises to move the project up by five weeks.

The cruise line said that they are moving the project forward due to strong demand for cruises on upgraded cruise ships. Because of this, the following sailings are canceled:

  • September 11, 2027
  • September 21, 2027
  • October 2, 2027
  • December 2, 2027
  • December 9, 2027

Guests who were booked on one of the canceled cruises will be contacted about rebooking options.

Oosterdam will now return to service with new features on October 31, 2027, a 10-day cruise from Rome to Trieste, Italy. Guests aboard the sailing will be among the first to experience the reimagined ship while visiting destinations in Italy, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia.

An additional four new cruises have been added to Oosterdam’s schedule. They are an 11-day Mediterranean voyage from Trieste to Piraeus (Athens), Greece, departing November 10, 2027; a seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Piraeus to Barcelona, Spain, departing November 21, 2027; a 13-day transatlantic crossing from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, leaving November 28, 2027; and an 11-day Caribbean cruise sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, departing on December 11, 2027.

Guests booked on what were previously the inaugural cruise and first transatlantic cruise in December 2027 will have the opportunity to move to the corresponding new cruises and remain among the first guests to sail on the post-Evolution Oosterdam. These new sailings will open for bookings early next month.

Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, gave the following statement:

“We’re very happy with the unprecedented response we’ve received to Holland America Evolution, and we’re thrilled we can move up Oosterdam’s dry dock to meet guest demand.

“Starting earlier allows us to create five additional cruises on the newly reimagined ship. Guests will have more opportunities to enjoy all of the enhancements coming to Oosterdam, from new stateroom and suite categories to the Grand Dutch Café and redesigned Ocean Bar. We’re excited to welcome guests aboard as Oosterdam begins this new chapter and to give them the opportunity to be among the first to experience her transformation.”
