Royal Caribbean’s Major U-Turn On Drinks Package Rules

Royal Caribbean has introduced a formal process allowing some passengers to request an exemption from its rule requiring adults sharing a stateroom to purchase the same alcoholic drinks package.

The Beverage Package Accommodation Request applies to guests who cannot consume alcohol because of a disability, medical condition or pregnancy. Requests are considered individually and approval is not guaranteed.

If an exemption is granted, the affected passenger will still be required to purchase a non-alcoholic beverage package.

The development represents a limited exception to the stricter policy Royal Caribbean introduced in August 2025, when it stopped routinely allowing one adult in a stateroom to opt out of purchasing the alcoholic package.

New Accommodation Request Process

Royal Caribbean’s standard policy requires all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom and under the same booking number to purchase the same alcoholic beverage package when one passenger buys it.

Previously, passengers could contact the cruise line to seek an exception for another adult in the cabin who did not want or need an alcoholic package. In those cases, the second passenger could instead be required to purchase the less expensive Royal Refreshment package.

That arrangement ended on 1st August 2025. Royal Caribbean said at the time that requests for exceptions had increased and that passengers had continued to share packages, which is prohibited under its terms.

“This change allows us to ensure guests are consuming their beverage package responsibly. Over time, requests for exceptions have increased, and sharing of packages has continued, which led us to implement this policy change,” a company spokesperson said.

The newly introduced Beverage Package Accommodation Request provides a more narrowly defined route to an exemption. According to the form, requests can be made on the grounds of disability, a medical condition or pregnancy.

Passengers are asked to provide their reservation and personal information when submitting a request. Supporting documentation is not mandatory, although applicants can voluntarily provide a brief written statement from what the form describes as “a reasonable, credible, supporting source.”

Royal Caribbean states: “The statement should confirm only that you (or the impacted guest) cannot consume alcohol due to a disability, medical condition, or pregnancy. No specific details about the nature of the disability or condition are required.”

The form advises passengers to allow 10 business days for a response.

An approved exemption does not mean the passenger can go without a drinks package altogether. Instead, the guest will be required to purchase a Non-Alcoholic Beverage Package.

Penalties For False Or Misleading Requests

Royal Caribbean has also set out potential consequences for passengers who provide false, misleading or fraudulent information when seeking an exemption.

Under the terms accompanying the accommodation request, the cruise line says it can revoke an exemption and retrospectively charge the passenger the full price of the alcoholic beverage package for the entire cruise if information supplied in the application is subsequently found to be inaccurate or fraudulent.

The terms also reserve broader enforcement options, including reporting an incident to governmental, regulatory or law enforcement authorities for investigation and possible prosecution under applicable laws.

Royal Caribbean further states that passengers could be removed from the ship at their own expense and without a refund or compensation. Its terms indicate that other occupants of the same stateroom could also be removed.

Espresso Martini Royal Caribbean

Passengers found to have abused the exemption process could additionally face a future sailing ban covering Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

The underlying rules on alcoholic drinks packages remain unchanged. Royal Caribbean says packages cannot be shared or transferred between passengers, and its policy states: “All guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom and under the same stateroom booking number are required to purchase the same alcoholic beverage package. Packages cannot be shared and are non-transferable.”

The accommodation process therefore does not restore the broader exception previously available before August 2025. Instead, it establishes specific grounds on which passengers who cannot consume alcohol may request an exemption, with each application remaining subject to Royal Caribbean’s approval.

Cruise Passenger Runs 186 Miles on 7-Day Cruise, Full Marathon Every Day

For many of us regular cruisers, just taking the stairs to go up 5 decks on a cruise ship is cause for a chocolate melting cake celebration.

And for those who cruise just to relax and not do anything for a while, the gym and running track on board might seem like a waste of space.

But for one trail running enthusiast out of Scotland, a cruise offered the perfect opportunity to complete an impressive feat: to run a marathon every day on a week-long cruise.

Cruise passenger runs marathon every day on week-long cruise
Paul Manson, trail runner from Scotland, ran a marathon every day on a 7-day cruise in the Mediterranean Sea.

Paul Manson took his first-ever cruise on the Princess Cruises ship Enchanted Princess. Rather than take it easy and use the cruise as an excuse to rest his body, he pushed it to the limits in some of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruise ports.

In total, Paul ran 299.5 kilometers, or about 186 miles during the cruise, with at least one full marathon taking place on the ship during a sea day that took 185 laps to complete.

For most of us, just running a marathon once is something to brag about, but for this runner, every single day of the cruise offered an opportunity to run those 26.2 miles.

Paul ran a full marathon in each port the ship stopped in, including Rome, Naples, Kotor, Corfu, Olympia, and Sicily.

He told The Independent that he tried to be one of the first to get off the ship when it arrived in port, often aiming to be off the ship by around 7:00AM if possible.

This obviously took a lot of preplanning. He said he used Google Maps and the Strave app to calculate his routes.

Even though Paul can typically complete a marathon in about three and a half hours, most of his marathon times during the cruise were around five to six hours.

Paul said his Rome marathon took the longest to complete because he was also trying to get video of the sites along the way as well.

“Rome has a lot of steps and had the most to see. It was really good to explore but took longer to run. There were, at least, lots of water fountains on my route,” Paul told The Independent.

These ports didn’t always offer the easiest routes for a marathon run though. Paul said that Kotor in Montenegro was one of the most challenging places.

“I had considered staying down in the bay of Kotor but getting a marathon distance would have been more challenging due to the space. It was more of a challenge to head up into the cliffs so I took a 1,350 metre climb to get to the highest viewpoint and then ran back down to the bay. The trail going up was great but it was hard to follow the small roads going down, especially in 40 degree heat”, Paul stated to the news outlet.

After a long day of running in port, Paul said that he enjoyed grabbing a beverage and just enjoying the infinity pool on Enchanted Princess. He would soak in the pool, enjoying the view of the port he had just been running around.

That one sea day on the ship where Paul ran a full marathon using the ship’s running track, made him a sort of celebrity on board. After all, it’s hard not to notice the same guy running by your lounger 185 times while you just enjoy the sea breeze.

Paul said that a lot of other cruise passengers came up to him afterward, even calling him the “marathon man”, according to The Independent.

enchanted princess cruise ship

When asked if he would take a cruise again, Paul said he absolutely would and that having a comfortable ship to enjoy after a long day of running was ideal for him.

One item that Paul made to pack was extra running shoes, three pairs to be exact. He said that the sweat build up after a long marathon would make them damp and using another pair to let that first pair dry out was the way to go.

The runner also found out something we at Cruise Fever have talked about before: how using a GPS watch while running laps on a moving cruise ship can really mess up the numbers.

When running with the ship it will look like you’re running at lightning speed, but on the return trip toward the aft of the ship, it might look like you’re not moving at all.

One of the biggest concerns for Paul was just making it back to the ship on time. This was especially true in Kotor where the ship had to use tenders to transport passengers back to the main vessel.

“I knew I had to make sure I was back for the last tender otherwise the ship would have left without me,” Paul stated.

Paul Manson runs an active Youtube channel called The Random Runner.

Water Leak Creates Cascade Down Quantum Of The Seas Stairwell

A water leak aboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas created an unexpected waterfall down a public stairwell near the ship’s Royal Esplanade during a recent Mexican Riviera voyage.

The incident, which appears to have been caused by a burst pipe near a restroom facility, was quickly contained by crew members with no lasting impact on subsequent sailings.

Passengers aboard Quantum of the Seas documented the dramatic scene as water cascaded down one of the vessel’s public stairwells, creating what appeared to be an impromptu waterfall in the heart of the ship.

Video footage posted to social media shows water flowing from upper decks and pooling at the base of stairs near the Royal Esplanade, the central public space aboard Quantum-class vessels where shops and dining venues are concentrated.

The Royal Esplanade spans Decks 4 and 5 on Quantum of the Seas, serving a similar function to the Royal Promenade found on many other Royal Caribbean ships. This area typically serves as the social hub of the vessel, making the location of the leak particularly visible to passengers moving through the ship.

Crew members can be seen in the footage already responding to the situation, placing barriers to redirect foot traffic even as water continued to accumulate. The swift response demonstrates the protocols cruise lines have in place for such mechanical failures.

Burst Pipe Near Restroom Identified As Likely Culprit

Passengers who witnessed the incident have clarified that the flooding originated from a burst pipe located near the men’s restroom at the midship elevators on Deck 5. The leak occurred whilst the ship was sailing near Cabo San Lucas during stormy weather, leading some to initially speculate that weather conditions might have contributed to the problem.

Quantum of the Seas

However, guests aboard the sailing confirmed that the storm was merely coincidental timing rather than the cause of the pipe failure. “It was a burst pipe by the men’s room at the midship elevators, the storm was coincidence,” noted one passenger who experienced the incident firsthand.

Burst pipes aboard cruise ships, whilst certainly inconvenient, are not uncommon mechanical failures given the extensive plumbing systems required to service thousands of guests and crew members. Modern cruise ships contain miles of piping carrying fresh water, grey water, and sewage throughout multiple decks, with constant pressure and usage creating potential failure points over time.

Timeline Of Incident Remains Somewhat Unclear

The precise date of the water leak has proven difficult to pinpoint with absolute certainty. The video was posted to social media on 4th September 2026, with the original poster indicating the incident occurred “last week.”

However, passengers involved in online discussions about the leak suggested it actually took place closer to 25th August 2026, nearly two weeks before the video appeared online. This discrepancy highlights how news of shipboard incidents can sometimes take time to circulate beyond those directly affected.

Adding to the timeline confusion, passengers on Quantum of the Seas’ subsequent sailing departing on 31st August 2026 reported no visible signs of any water damage whatsoever. One guest specifically commented that upon boarding for the four-night cruise from 31st August to 4th September, there were “absolutely no signs of a prior water leak whatsoever.”

Additionally, no photographs or discussions of flooding appeared in the dedicated Facebook community group for the 31st August sailing, suggesting either that the leak occurred earlier or that repairs were completed extraordinarily quickly.

Rapid Cleanup Leaves No Trace For Following Passengers

Rapid Cleanup Leaves No Trace For Following Passengers

The efficiency of Royal Caribbean’s maintenance and housekeeping teams appears evident from passenger reports following the incident. Despite what the video shows as substantial water accumulation in a public area, subsequent guests found the affected spaces completely restored.

This rapid response reflects standard industry practice when dealing with water emergencies aboard cruise ships. Specialised equipment including industrial wet-dry vacuums, dehumidifiers, and air movers can dry out affected areas within hours, whilst maintenance crews simultaneously address the source of the leak.

The fact that no itinerary changes were necessary and that following sailings proceeded without issue suggests the damage was contained to cosmetic and easily repairable elements. Had the pipe failure affected critical systems or caused structural concerns, Royal Caribbean would likely have needed to cancel or modify subsequent voyages whilst conducting more extensive repairs.

Royal Caribbean has not issued any public statement regarding the incident, which is typical for mechanical failures that are resolved quickly without passenger injury or significant disruption to operations.

Quantum Of The Seas Currently Operating Mexican Riviera Programme

Quantum Of The Seas Currently Operating Mexican Riviera Programme

Quantum of the Seas, which accommodates 4,180 passengers at double occupancy, is currently homeported in Los Angeles offering a variety of Mexican Riviera itineraries. The 168,666-gross-tonne vessel has been sailing these routes through 22nd September 2026, providing West Coast passengers with convenient access to popular Mexican destinations.

The ship represents Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class, which debuted in 2014 with innovations including the North Star observation capsule, RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, and the Two70 entertainment venue featuring transformative spaces and robotic screens. Quantum of the Seas specifically entered service in November 2014 and has sailed from various homeports around the world throughout her career.

Following the conclusion of her Mexican Riviera season, Quantum of the Seas is scheduled to embark on a repositioning voyage on 26th September 2026. This one-way journey to Brisbane will take passengers through ports in California, Hawaii, and French Polynesia, offering an extended transpacific cruise experience.

Extended Australian Season Planned Through April 2027

Extended Australian Season Planned Through April 2027

Once arriving in Brisbane, Quantum of the Seas will remain deployed in Australia through mid-April 2027, offering round-trip cruises to various South Pacific destinations. This seasonal deployment has become increasingly common for Royal Caribbean, which regularly positions ships in the Southern Hemisphere during the austral summer to capture demand from both local and international guests.

The extended Australian season allows the line to serve a market where cruise demand has grown substantially over the past decade. Australian passengers have demonstrated strong appetite for both short getaways and longer voyages exploring neighbouring islands and coastal destinations.

Following her Australian deployment, Quantum of the Seas will return to North American waters to operate seven-night Alaskan itineraries. This positioning places the vessel in one of cruising’s most popular seasonal markets, where demand for Inside Passage voyages remains consistently strong during the northern summer months.

Pattern Of Similar Incidents Across Multiple Cruise Lines

Pattern Of Similar Incidents Across Multiple Cruise Lines

The Quantum of the Seas leak represents just one example of similar incidents occurring across the cruise industry with some regularity. On 28th July 2026, what appeared to be another burst pipe aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas caused extensive flooding affecting multiple guest staterooms.

That incident proved more disruptive than the Quantum leak, as water entered passenger accommodations rather than just public spaces. Guests affected by cabin flooding typically receive compensation including cabin upgrades, onboard credit, or future cruise credits depending on the severity of the impact to their voyage.

Beyond Royal Caribbean, other major cruise lines have experienced comparable water incidents in recent months and years. Princess Cruises’ Enchanted Princess dealt with a similar situation in May 2026, whilst MSC Cruises’ MSC Seaview experienced flooding in January 2026.

P&O Cruises’ Azura also encountered water issues in January 2025, demonstrating that these mechanical failures occur across vessels of varying ages and from different shipbuilders. The commonality of such incidents reflects the complexity of marine plumbing systems operating continuously in a saltwater environment with constant motion and vibration.

Multiple Causes Can Trigger Shipboard Flooding Events

Whilst burst pipes represent perhaps the most frequent cause of unexpected water accumulation aboard cruise ships, several other factors can lead to similar flooding situations. Sprinkler system malfunctions, whether triggered by false alarms or mechanical failures, can release substantial volumes of water into public spaces and staterooms.

Pool overflows present another potential source of flooding, particularly on ships with innovative water features or pools positioned on upper decks. Wave action in rough seas can cause pool water to slosh over edges faster than drainage systems can handle, sending water flowing into adjacent spaces.

Clogged or malfunctioning toilets, whilst less dramatic, can also cause significant localised flooding when waste water backs up into cabins. Given that modern mega-ships might have more than 2,000 bathrooms serving passengers and crew, the statistical likelihood of toilet-related issues occurring during any given cruise is relatively high.

Regardless of the specific cause, cruise line protocols emphasise immediate response to contain water damage, protect electrical systems, and restore affected areas to normal condition. Crew members receive training on emergency response procedures, and ships carry extensive supplies of repair materials and drying equipment specifically for addressing such situations.

The maritime environment presents unique challenges for maintaining complex mechanical systems, with salt air, constant motion, and intensive daily use all contributing to wear on plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. Modern cruise ships represent floating cities requiring the infrastructure to support thousands of occupants, making occasional failures an accepted operational reality that lines plan for and address as efficiently as possible.

For passengers concerned about such incidents, travel insurance policies with trip interruption coverage can provide financial protection should flooding or other mechanical issues significantly impact a cruise experience. However, the industry’s strong track record of rapid response means most water leaks result in minimal passenger impact beyond temporary inconvenience.

New Super Ships Helen And Clara Join Uniworld’s 2028 European Expansion

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has unveiled an ambitious 2028 programme featuring three new Super Ships, eight fresh itineraries, and a reimagined Mystery Journey concept. The expansion will grow the luxury river cruise operator’s fleet to 22 vessels whilst introducing guests to lesser-explored waterways and extended multi-river sailings across Europe and Asia.

Trio Of Super Ships To Debut Across Key Waterways

The cruise line will welcome three new vessels to its fleet throughout 2028, strategically positioned across high-demand rivers. The S.S. Helen will join Uniworld’s Danube operations, whilst the S.S. Clara will bolster capacity along the Rhine.

Meanwhile, the Mekong Mystique will expand the company’s presence in Southeast Asia along the Mekong River. These additions represent a significant investment in Uniworld’s Super Ship programme, which emphasises boutique design, upscale amenities, and all-inclusive luxury experiences.

Each vessel will feature the line’s signature design aesthetic, combining contemporary comfort with destination-inspired décor. The expansion comes at a time when river cruising continues to experience robust demand, particularly for longer, more immersive itineraries that venture beyond traditional European routes.

By deploying new tonnage across both established and emerging markets, Uniworld positions itself to capture growth in multiple segments of the river cruise industry.

Extended Multi-River Sailings Connect Amsterdam To Black Sea

Extended Multi-River Sailings Connect Amsterdam To Black Sea

Among the most ambitious new offerings is a 30-day Amsterdam to the Black Sea journey, operating aboard either the S.S. Helen or S.S. Clara. This epic voyage will traverse multiple countries and rivers, providing guests with an unprecedented opportunity to experience Central and Eastern Europe in a single, comprehensive sailing.

The itinerary represents a significant departure from the traditional seven-to-ten-day river cruise format that has long dominated the European market. Longer sailings have grown increasingly popular amongst experienced river cruisers seeking deeper cultural immersion and the convenience of unpacking once whilst exploring numerous destinations.

Complementing this flagship route, Uniworld will offer a 25-day Eastern Europe Exploration and an 18-day Danube East & West sailing, both operating on the S.S. Helen or S.S. Clara. These extended journeys allow passengers to venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Western Europe, discovering the rich history, architecture, and traditions of countries including Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania.

Holiday-Themed French Sailings Debut For Festive Season

Holiday-Themed French Sailings Debut For Festive Season

Uniworld has introduced three new holiday-season itineraries designed to showcase European Christmas traditions and festive markets. The 15-day Grand France Holiday will operate aboard both the S.S. Catherine and S.S. Joie de Vivre, offering an extended exploration of French culture during the most enchanting time of year.

The Rhône Winter Holiday, an eight-day sailing aboard the S.S. Catherine, will introduce guests to the culinary delights and seasonal celebrations of southern France. Meanwhile, the eight-day Moselle Holiday Markets cruise aboard the S.S. Clara will navigate the scenic Moselle River, stopping at traditional Christmas markets in Germany and Luxembourg.

These seasonal offerings tap into the enduring popularity of European holiday markets, which have become a significant draw for river cruise passengers. The festive period typically sees high demand for sailings that incorporate market visits, seasonal cuisine, and regional holiday traditions into their itineraries.

Lower Danube Focus Highlights Emerging Eastern European Destinations

Lower Danube Focus Highlights Emerging Eastern European Destinations

The nine-day Empires of the Lower Danube itinerary aboard the S.S. Helen or S.S. Clara will concentrate on the often-overlooked eastern stretches of Europe’s second-longest river. This region, encompassing parts of Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania, has gained traction amongst river cruise enthusiasts seeking authentic experiences away from more crowded Western European routes.

The Lower Danube offers a distinct character compared to its more famous western sections, with dramatic gorges, medieval fortresses, and cities that blend Ottoman, Habsburg, and Soviet influences. Uniworld’s focus on this region reflects broader industry trends towards diversification and the development of alternative European itineraries.

By deploying new Super Ships to these routes, Uniworld signals its commitment to the eastern European market whilst providing the same luxury standards guests expect on more established sailings. The vessels’ modern amenities and boutique design will offer a comfortable base for exploring regions where tourism infrastructure may be less developed than in Western Europe.

Dutch And Flemish Treasures Itinerary Explores Low Countries

Dutch And Flemish Treasures Itinerary Explores Low Countries

An eight-day Dutch & Flemish Treasures sailing aboard the S.S. Clara will showcase the art, architecture, and culture of the Netherlands and Belgium. This itinerary capitalises on the enduring appeal of the Low Countries, with their picturesque canals, world-class museums, and charming medieval cities.

The route likely encompasses popular ports such as Amsterdam, Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp, though specific port calls have not been detailed in the announcement. These destinations consistently rank amongst the most sought-after stops in European river cruising, attracting culture enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

The deployment of a new Super Ship to this route suggests strong demand for Dutch and Belgian itineraries, which serve as popular choices for first-time river cruisers due to their accessible locations and well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Mystery Journey Concept Returns With Luxembourg-Zürich Routing

Uniworld has reimagined its popular Mystery Cruise concept with a new 11-day Mystery Journey departing 15th June 2028. Unlike traditional itineraries where ports and activities are revealed in advance, this sailing provides guests with only two clues: travellers will arrive through Luxembourg Airport and depart from Zürich Airport.

Ellen Bettridge, president and CEO of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, explained the appeal of the mystery format: “For guests who loved our Mystery Cruise, we’re doing something a little different this time with our new Mystery Journey, because sometimes the best part of travel is not knowing exactly what comes next.”

The mystery concept has proven successful in generating buzz and appealing to adventurous travellers who trust Uniworld’s destination expertise. By revealing only arrival and departure airports, the cruise line creates intrigue whilst providing enough logistical information for guests to arrange flights.

Given the Luxembourg and Zürich endpoints, the sailing likely navigates portions of the Rhine, Moselle, or even the less-travelled Neckar or Main rivers, though the specific route remains deliberately undisclosed. This approach allows Uniworld to craft a unique journey that may include off-the-beaten-path destinations, surprise excursions, and curated experiences without the constraints of published itineraries.

Leadership Emphasises Exploration And Expanded Horizons For Guests

Leadership Emphasises Exploration And Expanded Horizons For Guests

Bettridge highlighted the 2028 programme’s focus on providing diverse ways to experience river cruising across Europe and Asia. “We’re giving our guests the opportunity to see more, travel farther and experience some of our favourite destinations in entirely new ways,” she stated.

The CEO specifically referenced the breadth of the new offerings, from the epic Amsterdam to Black Sea journey to the cultural immersion of France during the holiday season, and the debut of the Mekong Mystique in Southeast Asia. “That could mean journeying from Amsterdam all the way to the Black Sea, experiencing the traditions and flavours of France during the holiday season, or exploring the Mekong aboard our newest ship,” Bettridge added.

This strategic vision reflects Uniworld’s positioning as a luxury operator willing to innovate beyond standard seven-night European sailings. By offering itineraries ranging from eight to 30 days across multiple continents, the line caters to both traditional river cruise guests and those seeking more extensive, expedition-style experiences.

The 2028 programme announcement arrives as the river cruise industry continues its post-pandemic recovery, with operators investing in new ships and itineraries to meet growing demand. Uniworld’s expansion to 22 ships positions the brand competitively within the luxury river cruise segment, where it competes with operators such as AmaWaterways, Scenic, and Emerald Cruises.

Strategic Expansion Positions Uniworld For Long-Term Growth

Strategic Expansion Positions Uniworld For Long-Term Growth

The addition of three Super Ships and eight new itineraries represents one of Uniworld’s most significant capacity expansions in recent years. By growing its fleet to 22 vessels, the boutique cruise line strengthens its market position whilst maintaining its focus on intimate, upscale experiences that differentiate it from larger river cruise operators.

The strategic deployment of new ships across established European routes and emerging Asian markets demonstrates a balanced growth approach. The Danube and Rhine remain the backbone of European river cruising, generating consistent demand throughout the sailing season.

By adding capacity on these rivers, Uniworld can capture a larger share of this mature market whilst introducing its distinctive boutique style to new guests. Simultaneously, the Mekong Mystique expansion reflects recognition of Asia’s growth potential, particularly as travellers increasingly seek exotic alternatives to European itineraries.

The Mekong, flowing through Vietnam and Cambodia, offers a dramatically different river cruising experience, with visits to ancient temples, floating markets, and destinations rich in Southeast Asian culture and history.

The emphasis on longer sailings, particularly the 30-day and 25-day options, addresses a gap in the market for extended river cruise experiences. Whilst ocean cruises routinely offer month-long world voyages, river cruising has traditionally centred on week-long sailings.

By creating marathon itineraries that connect multiple rivers and countries, Uniworld caters to retired travellers and others with the time and resources to undertake more comprehensive European explorations.

The holiday-themed French itineraries capitalise on seasonal demand whilst offering year-round deployment options for vessels that might otherwise be repositioned or laid up during winter months. European Christmas markets have become a lucrative niche within river cruising, commanding premium pricing and attracting guests specifically interested in festive travel experiences.

Looking ahead, Uniworld’s 2028 programme signals confidence in sustained demand for luxury river cruising. The significant capital investment required to build and operate three new Super Ships indicates the company’s long-term commitment to growth and product development.

As the river cruise market matures, operators that offer distinctive experiences, innovative itineraries, and consistent luxury standards are best positioned to capture discerning travellers seeking alternatives to traditional ocean cruising and land-based holidays.

Power Knocked Out for 30 Minutes on Adventure of the Seas

Just two days into an 8-night sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, passengers on the 3,114-guest cruise ship were left in the dark.

For at least half an hour, cabins lost lighting, main dining rooms were dimly lit by auxiliary lighting, and passengers were told to steer clear of elevators, as technicians worked to restore power to the ship.

The 25-year-old ship had just left Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day CocoCay at 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 5.  Passengers were getting ready for dinner when the lights suddenly went out.

Some passengers posted details of the ordeal on Facebook and Reddit. One guest staying in an interior cabin said that “everything went pitch black”.

The captain of the ship announced on the PA system that the vessel had lost power and would keep everyone informed if the crew was not able to restore power shortly.

Guests described passengers walking around with their phone flashlights on, although emergency lighting was working in main public areas and hallways.

Despite the temporary disruption, shipboard engineering teams resolved the issue within about 30 minutes or less, restoring full power to cabins, galleys, and public venues.

Some reports have stated the power was only out for 15 minutes, but this is due to the captain coming onto the ship’s intercom to state that if power was not restored in 15 minutes, he would give another announcement.

While no reason has been given for the power outage on Adventure of the Seas, this is a very rare incident for even this length of time.

On top of that, cruise ships have backup systems to make sure that all necessary areas of the ship are functioning as normal. In this case, backup generators did their job.

Thankfully, the brief blackout has not altered the ship’s planned itinerary or schedule.

Adventure of the Seas is continuing its 8-night Southern Caribbean voyage with upcoming port calls at Cabo Rojo-Pedernales in the Dominican Republic on September 7, Oranjestad, Aruba on September 8, and Willemstad, Curaçao on September 9, before returning to Port Canaveral on September 12.

Ambassador Cruise Line Renames Drinks Packages To Make Choices Clearer

Ambassador Cruise Line has renamed its three adult drinks packages, with the changes taking effect in September 2026 as the cruise line moves to make the differences between its options easier to understand.

The former Expedition Package is now known as the Premium Drinks Package, while the Explorer Package has become the Classic Drinks Package. The Experience Package, which provides an alcohol-free selection, has been renamed the Non-Alcoholic Package.

Ambassador Cruise Line Drinks Menus

Despite the new terminology, Ambassador says there have been no changes to the drinks, discounts or other benefits provided by the three packages. The move is therefore a change of name rather than an overhaul of the drinks package offering.

What The New Ambassador Drinks Package Names Mean

Under the revised system, Ambassador’s three main adult packages are the Non-Alcoholic, Classic and Premium Drinks Packages.

The Non-Alcoholic Package includes soft drinks, mocktails and non-alcoholic beer, while the Classic Drinks Package adds alcoholic options including house brands from the bar list and house wines by the glass.

Passengers purchasing the Classic package also receive a 50% discount on premium beverages that are not included outright.

The Premium Drinks Package is the most comprehensive of the three. It covers the drinks available with the Classic package as well as premium wines, premium drinks from the bar list, premium teas and speciality coffees.

Gratuities for the cruise are also included with each of Ambassador’s three adult drinks packages. Ambassador generally charges gratuities of £7 per person, per night, falling to £6 per night on cruises lasting 15 nights or more.

The cruise line additionally offers Adventurers drinks packages for children on selected family-friendly sailings. These have not been included in the September renaming of the three adult packages.

Prices And Package Rules Remain Important

The amount passengers pay for an Ambassador drinks package varies according to the package, cruise duration and whether it is purchased in advance or closer to departure.

For cruises of between five and 29 nights, advance prices are currently £20.95 per person, per night for the Non-Alcoholic Package, £42.95 for the Classic Drinks Package and £49.95 for the Premium Drinks Package.

The equivalent prices for purchases at the higher rate are £22.95, £47.95 and £55.95 respectively.

Different rates apply to shorter cruises and voyages of 30 to 69 nights. On the longest cruises, advance prices fall to £18.95 per night for the Non-Alcoholic Package, £37.95 for Classic and £44.95 for Premium.

Passengers also need to take Ambassador’s package rules into account before buying. Guests sharing a cabin are generally required to purchase the same drinks package for the entire cruise, although separate arrangements apply when travelling with children.

Packages cannot be purchased for selected days of a sailing. Guests buying in advance can secure the lower rate until seven days before departure, while those who wait until boarding have only the first 24 hours of the cruise to add a package.

There are exclusions even with a drinks package. Bottled wines, bottled water and drinks or snacks from the minibar are not included.

Ambassador also changed its drinks policy in April 2026, removing the previous daily limit on the number of drinks available through a package while reducing standard spirit measures from 40ml to 25ml. Guests can order only one drink at a time and must wait 15 minutes before ordering another.

The latest change does not alter any of those conditions. Instead, the new names are intended to make the level of each package more immediately apparent, particularly by identifying the alcohol-free option as Non-Alcoholic and distinguishing the two alcoholic tiers as Classic and Premium.

Carnival Extends Value Packages To 2027 Cruises But Booking Deadline Looms

Carnival Cruise Line has extended its Ultimate and Essentials Value Packages to selected cruises departing throughout 2027, giving guests more opportunities to bundle drinks, Wi-Fi and other onboard benefits into a single daily price.

The extension means the two adult packages are now being offered on selected sailings departing between 28th August 2026 and 31st December 2027, according to Carnival’s current package terms.

Carnival Value Packages

However, passengers considering purchasing one have limited time under the current promotion. Carnival is advertising a booking deadline of 30th September 2026.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald has also encouraged guests interested in the packages not to wait.

“I would suggest, if you want this, that you book this as soon as possible, as I don’t know how long it’s going to be around.”

The deadline comes after the Value Packages, which were initially introduced in late 2025, remained available through a series of extensions.

Carnival’s website currently lists the Ultimate Value Package from $90 per person, per day and the Essentials Value Package from $50 per person, per day.

What Carnival’s Value Packages Include

The Ultimate Value Package combines Carnival’s Cheers! alcoholic drinks package with its Premium Wi-Fi Plan, alongside a series of pre-cruise discounts.

Those benefits include a one-time $50 discount on a shore excursion and a one-time $25 discount on speciality dining. Guests can also receive 50% discounts on selected spa treatments and selected photo packages when booked before the cruise.

Premium Wi-Fi is Carnival’s highest-level internet plan and supports services including video streaming and video calling where coverage allows.

Cheers! covers eligible alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including spirits, cocktails, beer and wine by the glass priced at $20 or less. It also includes sodas, zero-proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, speciality coffee, tea and bottled water.

The drinks programme carries several restrictions. Guests can order only one drink at a time and sharing is prohibited. Cheers! allows up to 15 alcoholic drinks during each 24-hour period running from 6am to 6am, although Carnival says service can be refused before that limit is reached if crew members determine that a passenger is impaired.

Once the 15-drink limit has been reached, additional alcoholic drinks cannot be purchased during the same period.

This image shows three bottles of liquor displayed on a bar counter aboard a Carnival Cruise ship. The bottles include Campari, Amaro Nonino, and Amaro Montenegro, each accompanied by a small glass of the corresponding drink in front of them. The background features a well-lit bar area with a variety of other bottles on shelves, and a sign that reads "AMARI." The setup highlights the selection of Italian liqueurs available on the cruise.

Sharing cocktails, pitchers, tubes and buckets are excluded, along with room service and minibar drinks, bottles of spirits and beverages sold in souvenir glasses.

Cheers! is also designed for use aboard Carnival ships and does not extend to destinations visited during a cruise, including Carnival’s exclusive destinations such as Celebration Key.

The Ultimate Value Package is available to guests aged 21 and over on applicable sailings, and all qualifying adults sharing a stateroom must purchase a package.

The Essentials Value Package provides a non-alcoholic alternative. It combines Cheers! Zero Proof with Carnival’s Value Wi-Fi Plan and includes a one-time $50 shore excursion discount and $25 speciality dining discount.

Cheers! Zero Proof covers a broad selection of non-alcoholic drinks, including sodas, standard juices, bottled water, premium coffees and teas, non-alcoholic frozen drinks, milkshakes and energy drinks. Other eligible beverages include smoothies, protein shakes and, subject to age restrictions, zero-proof cocktails, alcohol-free beer and non-alcoholic sparkling wine.

As with the alcoholic package, the beverage benefits are intended for onboard use and cannot be shared.

Value Wi-Fi provides internet access but, unlike the Premium plan included with Ultimate, does not support video streaming.

Passengers should also check the specific terms applying to their sailing before purchasing, as package eligibility and beverage inclusions can vary by market and itinerary.

Cabin Rules And Discounts Need To Be Considered

The headline daily price is not the only factor passengers need to consider when deciding whether one of the packages represents value.

Carnival’s current terms state that qualifying adults in the same stateroom cannot mix the Ultimate and Essentials packages. All guests aged 21 or over must select the same qualifying package, meaning a cabin cannot have one adult purchasing Ultimate while another chooses Essentials.

That can significantly affect the overall cost for couples or groups whose drinking and internet habits differ.

The shore excursion and speciality dining discounts are also one-time benefits rather than discounts that can be repeatedly applied throughout the cruise.

Guests planning to use the excursion benefit may therefore want to compare Carnival’s excursion prices with independently operated alternatives before factoring the discount into the overall value of the package.

Carnival says package-related discounts and benefits must be used no later than three days before embarkation. Shore excursions, dining and other capacity-controlled experiences also remain subject to availability.

The Value Packages are sold before departure and cannot be purchased once guests are onboard.

Carnival’s Kids And Teens Package Remains More Limited

Carnival also offers a separate Kids and Teens Value Package priced at $25 per person, per day for eligible passengers aged three to 17.

Kids on Carnival Cruise ship's Waterworks - 1

Unlike the extension of the Ultimate and Essentials packages into 2027, Carnival’s current terms describe the youth option as a limited-time package for selected cruises departing between 28th August and 31st December 2026.

It combines Bottomless Bubbles, Carnival’s unlimited soda and juice programme, with the Social Wi-Fi Plan and an arcade token package.

Additional benefits include a Carnival Cruise Line lanyard, a Bottomless Bubbles souvenir cup and a 50% discount on bulk candy at Cherry On Top.

Importantly for families, the youth package does not carry the same stateroom-wide purchasing requirement as the adult packages. It can be purchased independently for an eligible child or teenager without requiring every other passenger in the cabin to buy one.

Carnival says availability of individual products and experiences can vary by ship and sailing, while some benefits are capacity-controlled.

For passengers already booked on an eligible 2027 Carnival cruise, the extension provides another opportunity to compare the bundled price with purchasing drinks, internet access and other extras separately.

The immediate decision is whether to purchase under the current offer. Carnival is presently advertising 30th September 2026 as the booking deadline, while the Ultimate and Essentials packages themselves are now listed for selected sailings through the end of 2027.

Brief Power Loss Halts Operations Aboard Adventure Of The Seas

Adventure of the Seas experienced a shipwide power outage on Saturday, 5th September 2026, leaving passengers temporarily in darkness during what should have been a routine evening at sea.

The incident, which occurred shortly before dinner service, lasted approximately 30 minutes before full power was restored and normal operations resumed.

Adventure of the Seas power outage

The power failure hit Adventure of the Seas without warning as the vessel sailed away from Royal Caribbean’s private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Passengers preparing for the evening’s main dining service suddenly found themselves plunged into darkness, with only emergency lighting systems remaining operational throughout the ship.

Videos shared on social media platforms including Facebook and Threads captured the eerie atmosphere aboard the 137,276-gross-ton vessel as guests used mobile phone torches to navigate darkened corridors and public spaces. The timing proved particularly disruptive, coinciding with one of the ship’s scheduled main dining times, though reports have not clarified whether the early or late seating was affected.

All electrical systems ceased functioning during the outage. Passenger staterooms lost power entirely, lifts stopped operating between decks, and galley operations came to a standstill.

The sudden loss of amenities caused understandable concern amongst the 3,114 passengers aboard, many of whom were unsure whether the situation indicated a more serious emergency.

Captain Provides Swift Reassurance To Concerned Passengers

The ship’s commanding officer moved quickly to address passenger anxiety, making a shipwide announcement shortly after the power failed. According to guests who witnessed the incident, the captain informed passengers that if power could not be restored within 15 minutes, he would provide additional updates and instructions regarding the situation.

This prompt communication helped alleviate some of the concern spreading throughout the vessel. Passengers reported feeling reassured by the captain’s calm demeanour and clear messaging, which indicated the crew remained in control of the situation despite the technical difficulties.

The transparency demonstrated by the bridge team reflects standard maritime protocols for passenger communication during unexpected incidents. Keeping guests informed helps prevent panic and ensures orderly behaviour whilst technical teams address the underlying problem.

Technical Teams Restore Full Power Within Half An Hour

Engineering staff aboard Adventure of the Seas worked swiftly to diagnose and resolve the power failure. Within approximately 30 minutes of the initial outage, full electrical power was restored throughout the vessel, allowing normal shipboard operations to resume.

One passenger took to Facebook following the incident to confirm that systems had returned to normal. “The power has been restored and hopefully that’s the end of it because we still have six days left!” the guest wrote, though he noted that no official explanation had been provided to those aboard regarding what caused the failure.

The Adventure of the Seas

Another passenger posting on Reddit corroborated the timeline, confirming the 30-minute duration of the outage. No subsequent power losses have been reported, and the ship has continued operating normally since the incident.

Importantly, no injuries resulted from the power failure, and passengers reported no significant disruptions beyond the temporary inconvenience. The swift restoration suggests the technical issue was relatively minor and quickly remedied by the ship’s experienced engineering team.

Eight-Night Southern Caribbean Voyage Continues As Scheduled

The power outage has not affected Adventure of the Seas’ planned itinerary for the eight-night Southern Caribbean sailing. The vessel departed Port Canaveral, Florida on Friday, 4th September 2026, calling at Perfect Day at CocoCay the following day between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. before the evening power loss occurred.

The ship’s schedule includes a sea day on Sunday, 6th September, followed by a series of Caribbean port calls. On Monday, 7th September, Adventure of the Seas is set to visit Cabo Rojo in the Dominican Republic from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The itinerary then continues to Oranjestad, Aruba on Tuesday, 8th September, with an extended stay from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, 9th September brings a call to Willemstad, Curaçao between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Following additional sea days, the cruise concludes with Adventure of the Seas returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday, 12th September 2026. Royal Caribbean has not issued any statement indicating changes to this itinerary, and all port calls appear set to proceed as originally scheduled.

The brief nature of the power outage and its swift resolution meant the ship maintained its sailing schedule without delays or diversions.

Royal Caribbean Yet To Issue Official Statement

As of publication, Royal Caribbean International has not released an official statement regarding the power outage aboard Adventure of the Seas. Cruise Hive reached out to the cruise line for comment but had not received a response at the time of writing.

The absence of an official statement is not unusual for relatively minor technical incidents that are resolved quickly without passenger injury or significant operational impact. Cruise lines typically reserve public statements for more serious situations that result in itinerary changes, extended disruptions, or safety concerns.

However, passengers aboard the vessel have expressed some frustration at the lack of explanation regarding what caused the power failure. Whilst the captain’s initial announcement helped manage the immediate situation, no follow-up information has been provided to clarify whether the outage resulted from a mechanical fault, electrical surge, or other technical issue.

This communication approach reflects a balance cruise lines must strike between transparency and avoiding unnecessary alarm over incidents that, whilst inconvenient, pose no lasting danger or disruption to the cruise experience.

Understanding Power Failures In The Modern Cruise Industry

Whilst power outages aboard cruise ships can be alarming for passengers, such incidents remain relatively rare given the sophisticated electrical systems and redundancies built into modern vessels. When failures do occur, they are typically resolved swiftly by highly trained engineering teams who monitor and maintain complex power generation and distribution systems around the clock.

Adventure of the Seas, which entered service in November 2001, is one of five Voyager-class ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet. These vessels were groundbreaking at their debut, introducing innovations including an internal Royal Promenade shopping street and rock-climbing walls.

The ship underwent a substantial refurbishment in 2014 and continues to operate popular Caribbean itineraries from Florida. Modern cruise ships generate their own electricity using diesel-electric power plants, with multiple generators providing redundancy.

Emergency backup systems ensure critical functions – particularly lighting, navigation, and communication equipment – remain operational even during main power failures. This explains why emergency lights continued functioning aboard Adventure of the Seas during the outage.

The swift 30-minute restoration suggests the technical team was able to quickly identify and resolve the issue, likely by switching to backup generators or repairing a fault in the primary electrical distribution system. Such rapid responses demonstrate the effectiveness of cruise ship engineering departments and the comprehensive training crew members receive for emergency situations.

Recent Power Incidents Across The Cruise Industry

The Adventure of the Seas incident joins a series of similar power-related events affecting various cruise ships in recent months, highlighting that whilst rare, such technical difficulties can affect any vessel regardless of cruise line or ship age.

Another Royal Caribbean vessel, Radiance of the Seas, experienced a brief power loss on 16th May 2026. That incident left the ship adrift temporarily before power was restored within approximately one hour, allowing the vessel to continue its journey without significant delay.

Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess lost power for just over an hour on 5th June 2026 whilst sailing between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Port Canaveral. Similarly to the Adventure of the Seas situation, power was restored relatively quickly and the ship continued its scheduled itinerary.

Industry reporting has also documented power outages aboard several other vessels, including Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas – two of the newest ships in the fleet – as well as Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady, Carnival Panorama, and Norwegian Star at various times throughout 2026.

The causes of these outages vary considerably. Electrical surges, small fires in technical spaces, mechanical equipment failures, and issues with power distribution systems can all result in temporary power losses.

What remains consistent across most incidents is the swift response from onboard engineering teams and the relatively short duration of most disruptions. The cruise industry’s safety record regarding power systems remains strong, with most incidents resolved quickly and without passenger injury.

Modern maritime regulations require extensive redundancy in critical systems, ensuring that even during power failures, essential safety equipment continues operating.

Carnival Triumph’s 2013 Ordeal Remains Industry’s Cautionary Tale

No discussion of cruise ship power failures would be complete without mentioning the 2013 incident aboard Carnival Triumph, which remains the most infamous example of what can happen when power loss leads to extended operational difficulties. That incident, which left passengers stranded for days in challenging conditions, gained renewed attention when Netflix featured it in an episode of the documentary series “Trainwreck” in June 2025.

The Carnival Triumph situation differed dramatically from typical power outages in both duration and severity. An engine room fire disabled the ship’s propulsion and power generation systems, leaving the vessel adrift in the Gulf of Mexico.

The extended loss of power meant air conditioning, most plumbing, and food service capabilities were severely compromised for several days whilst the ship was towed to port.

That incident, sometimes referred to as the “poop cruise” due to the sanitation challenges that developed, led to significant changes in cruise industry practices regarding emergency preparedness and passenger communication.

It remains an outlier rather than a representative example of cruise ship power failures, which are typically resolved within minutes or hours rather than days.

The contrast between the Carnival Triumph ordeal and the brief 30-minute outage aboard Adventure of the Seas illustrates how effectively modern cruise ships and their crews handle most technical difficulties.

The swift restoration of power and absence of any significant complications demonstrates that whilst power failures can occur, they rarely develop into serious incidents affecting passenger safety or comfort beyond a brief inconvenience.

Looking Ahead For Adventure Of The Seas Passengers

For the passengers currently aboard Adventure of the Seas, the power outage has become an unexpected story to share from their Caribbean cruise – a brief adventure within their larger vacation. With six days remaining in the itinerary at the time of the incident, guests can look forward to exploring three distinct Caribbean destinations before returning to Florida.

The ship’s calls to the Dominican Republic, Aruba, and Curaçao offer diverse experiences, from pristine beaches to colonial architecture and vibrant local cultures. These ports remain highlights of Southern Caribbean itineraries and should provide ample opportunities for passengers to create positive memories that will far outweigh the 30-minute inconvenience of the power outage.

Adventure of the Seas continues to be a popular choice for Caribbean cruises, offering a well-established array of amenities including multiple dining venues, entertainment options, and recreational facilities.

The ship’s Voyager-class features have proven enduringly popular with guests, and Royal Caribbean continues to deploy the vessel on sought-after itineraries from Port Canaveral.

As the cruise industry continues evolving with ever-larger and more technologically sophisticated vessels, incidents like the Adventure of the Seas power outage serve as reminders that even the most advanced ships remain complex machines operating in challenging maritime environments.

The professionalism demonstrated by the crew in quickly resolving the situation and maintaining passenger confidence reflects the high standards that have made cruising one of the safest and most reliable forms of vacation travel.
