Injured Cruise Ship Crew Member Airlifted from Disney Wonder

A dramatic video released by search and rescue teams last week shows a helicopter hovering over the bow of a Disney cruise ship before airlifting a patient onto the CH-149 Cormorant.

Screenshot from the RCAF video showing the yellow Cormorant approaching the bow of the Disney Wonder (Department of National Defence)

While the name of the ship was not released along with the video, tracking data combined with visual confirmation of the ship in the footage makes clear what ship was involved in this rescue attempt.

On Tuesday, September 8, Royal Canadian Air Force crews from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 19 Wing Comox responded to a reported injured crew member aboard Disney Wonder.

The ship, which was sailing on a 7-night cruise out of Vancouver, was about 113 miles northwest of Port Hardy, British Columbia, when the Transport and Rescue Squadron was called into action.

Once the helicopter was in position, two SAR technicians worked to hoist the patient onto the helicopter, along with a member of the ship’s medical staff. The injured crew member was then flown to Comox for transfer to BC Emergency Health Services.

Public tracking data from The Cruise Globe lines up with the timing of the incident.

Around 12:35 PM the ship made a noticeable turn and headed southeast. Later, around 3:35 PM, the ship did another 180-degree turn and resumed a northwest course, consistent with the area and timeframe of the rescue operation.

Tracking data from Cruise Globe shows the moment Disney Wonder turned to head in a direction that made it easier for the helicopter to perform the airlift. Image on right shows the moment the ship resumed its scheduled itinerary route.

You can see the full video and additional details in this report from CHEK News: RCAF helicopter rescues injured cruise ship crew member off Port Hardy.

The nature of the injury and the patient’s condition have not been released. Disney Wonder continued on its scheduled Alaska itinerary after the successful evacuation and is scheduled to arrive back in Vancouver today.

Another Med Evac at Sea

This was not the only cruise ship medical evacuation in the same area last week. Just four days later, on Saturday, September 12, the same 442 Squadron was called out again.

This time to a different cruise ship sailing about 124 miles northwest of Port Hardy. In the pre-dawn hours, crews airlifted an ill passenger, along with a travelling companion and a member of the ship’s medical staff, using another CH-149 Cormorant and CC-295 Kingfisher.

Reports identify the vessel as Celebrity Solstice, which was also on a Vancouver–Alaska itinerary at the time.

Celebrity Cruises’ First River Ship Floats for the First Time

Celebrity River Cruises celebrated the float-out of their first river ship this weekend at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam.

Celebrity River Cruises
Celebrity River Cruises’ first ship being floated out

The float-out of Celebrity Compass marked a major construction milestone for the ship that will debut in August 2027. The ship will be the inaugural vessel in Celebrity’s premium fleet of river ships.

The multi-day float-out process began at Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam on Wednesday, September 9. Following a successful float-out, the ship then traveled her first 80 kilometers on the river, arriving at TeamCo Shipyard in Heusden on Saturday, September 12.

Celebrity River Cruises will offer revolutionary open decks with an intuitive design the cruise line is known for on the ocean. They will offer 360-degree views, and guests will be able to dine floating above the river on Magic Edge. Magic Edge will be the first-ever cantilevered dining pods on a river ship.

The ship will also have an infinity-edge plunge pool at the aft of the vessel.

Five boutique stateroom categories will be available to book, with a king-sized bed in every cabin.

Celebrity will have more restaurants and bars, eight in total, than any other river cruise line in the world. This includes the cruise line’s favorites Martini Bar, Sunset Bar and Café Al Bacio.

An innovative hull will deliver a lightweight, versatile design for river navigation. The vessel will also have a hybrid propulsion system and advanced technology to reduce noise and vibration.

First Block Laid for Royal Caribbean’s Fifth Icon Class Ship

Royal Caribbean celebrated the keel laying for its fifth Icon class ship that will debut in 2028. Icon class ships are currently the largest cruise ships in the world at close to 250,000 gross tons in size.

The keel was laid for Royal Caribbean’s fifth Icon class ship.

The keel-laying for Icon 5 at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, marks the start of assembling the blocks to form the structure of the vessel.

During the keel-laying celebration, the first major building block of steel was placed in the dry dock at the shipyard where the ship will take shape over the next two years.

The keel forms the backbone of the ship along the bottom and center of its hull and provides the foundation for the ship’s construction.

To mark the milestone, Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku placed a layer of freshly minted coins beneath the steel block before it was lifted into position in a time-honored shipbuilding tradition sealing good fortune for the ship’s journey ahead.

Casimir Lindholm, CEO of Meyer Turku, gave the following statement:

“The start of construction for the fifth Icon Class ship reflects the strength of the long-term partnership between Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku. Building a series of ships allows us to continuously learn, improve, and innovate, and each new vessel benefits from the expertise gained throughout the program. Together with our partner network, we are proud to demonstrate the world-class shipbuilding capabilities developed in Turku and to help shape the future of cruise shipbuilding.”

Royal Caribbean currently has three Icon class ships in service with a fourth, Hero of the Seas, set to debut in 2027.

The world’s largest cruise line has a total of seven Icon class ships either in service or on order. A sixth will debut in 2029, followed by a seventh in 2030.

Royal Caribbean will give more details on Icon 5, including a name and features, at a later date.

Carnival Cruise Guest Loses Balcony Access After Drinking Package Is Revoked

A Carnival Cruise Line passenger says crew members revoked her CHEERS! drinks package and removed the handle from her balcony door after she became heavily intoxicated during a cruise.

The passenger, who posts on TikTok under the username @juicyloveboo, shared footage showing three security staff accompanying her through a corridor before revealing the restrictions that had been imposed.

Guest losing balcony access over drinking on Carnival

“They took my balcony handle and revoked my drinking package. Yeah, we was f—– up,” she wrote.

The video then showed the passenger approaching the balcony door in her cabin, where the handle had been removed, preventing her from opening it and accessing the balcony.

She later indicated that her alcohol consumption had been significant before the restrictions were introduced.

Carnival Can Refuse Alcohol Service

The incident highlights the limits attached to Carnival Cruise Line’s CHEERS! beverage package, despite the programme allowing passengers to purchase multiple alcoholic drinks during each day of a cruise.

CHEERS! currently costs $69.95 per person, per day when purchased before sailing, according to Carnival, increasing to $74.95 per person, per day when bought aboard.

The package generally covers beer, wine by the glass, spirits and cocktails priced at $20 or less, together with a range of non-alcoholic drinks. Passengers also receive a 25% discount on certain beverages costing more than the package limit.

However, the programme does not give passengers an unrestricted right to receive alcohol.

Carnival drinks menu

CHEERS! allows a maximum of 15 alcoholic drinks during the applicable 24-hour period. Once that limit is reached, passengers cannot purchase further alcoholic drinks, even separately from the package.

Carnival also gives its crew discretion to stop serving a passenger before they reach that maximum.

The cruise line says the 15-drink allowance is not an entitlement and that service can be declined if a guest is clearly impaired. Crew members can therefore restrict a passenger to fewer than 15 alcoholic drinks based on their judgement.

That distinction is particularly relevant because passengers may also consume alcohol elsewhere, including while ashore, which cannot necessarily be tracked through the ship’s beverage system.

Adults sharing the same cabin are also generally required to purchase CHEERS! if one person buys the package, while sharing drinks obtained through the programme is prohibited.

Balcony Access Can Become A Safety Issue

Removing the balcony door handle represents a separate restriction from cutting off alcohol service.

In the passenger’s case, the removal meant she could remain in her cabin but could no longer open the door leading to the private balcony.

Another Carnival passenger reported a similar experience in late 2025 after becoming intoxicated, suggesting that restricting balcony access can be used as an additional safety measure when crew members are concerned about a guest’s condition.

Cruise ship balconies present an obvious additional risk when someone is severely impaired, particularly because of their proximity to the sea and the possibility of a fall.

The latest account should not be interpreted as meaning passengers automatically lose balcony access after consuming a particular number of drinks. The passenger’s own description indicates that the action followed significant intoxication, while Carnival’s published alcohol rules give crew members discretion when deciding whether it is safe to continue serving a guest.

Other Carnival passengers have similarly reported temporary restrictions on their drinking privileges after consuming too much alcohol. In one previous case, a guest was prevented from ordering alcoholic drinks for 24 hours before access was restored.

For CHEERS! customers, the 15-drink maximum therefore remains an upper limit rather than a guaranteed daily allowance. Crew members can stop alcohol service earlier if they believe a passenger has become too impaired, and further safety measures may follow depending on the circumstances.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Port Day Casita Bookings After Pricing Error

Royal Caribbean International has begun cancelling port day casita reservations across its Icon-class fleet after a pricing error allowed guests to book the exclusive poolside amenity at significantly reduced rates. Guests who secured reservations for under $200 are receiving cancellation notices and full refunds, with the casitas now available again at substantially higher prices.

Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas Casita

The cancellations are affecting guests sailing aboard all three vessels in Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon class. Icon of the Seas, which debuted in January 2024 as the world’s largest cruise ship, has been impacted alongside its sister ships Star of the Seas and the forthcoming Legend of the Seas.

These state-of-the-art vessels represent the cruise line’s most advanced ships, each accommodating approximately 5,610 passengers at double occupancy and featuring seven distinct themed neighbourhoods. The Icon class introduced numerous firsts for Royal Caribbean, including the industry’s first suspended infinity pool and largest waterpark at sea.

Port day casitas on these vessels have quickly become one of the most sought-after amenities for guests looking to enhance their cruise experience with exclusive poolside luxury.

Luxury Poolside Amenities Command Premium Pricing

Casitas represent a premium addition to the cruise experience, offering guests a private sanctuary amidst the bustling pool deck environment. These luxury loungers are strategically positioned to provide optimal views whilst shielding occupants from the crowds that typically gather around standard deck chairs.

Each casita rental includes dedicated concierge service throughout the day, ensuring guests’ needs are met without requiring them to leave their exclusive space. Complimentary welcome drinks greet guests upon arrival, whilst bottled water remains available throughout the rental period.

The enclosed spaces feature comfortable seating, charging outlets for electronic devices, and convenient storage for personal belongings. The amenity proves particularly appealing to families with young children, couples seeking romantic relaxation, or groups of friends wanting a home base for their pool day activities.

Pricing Structure Varies Across Sailing Days And Itineraries

Royal Caribbean employs dynamic pricing for casita reservations, with costs fluctuating based on several factors including voyage length, itinerary popularity, and whether the rental occurs on a port day or sea day. Sea day rentals typically command higher prices due to increased demand, as more passengers remain aboard the ship.

Royal Caribbean Icon Class Pool Area

Port day casitas generally offer better value, with the cruise line acknowledging that many guests choose to explore destinations rather than utilise shipboard amenities. On a recent three-night weekend sailing of Utopia of the Seas, for example, port day casitas were priced at $350 – a figure representing the standard rate for shorter voyages.

Pre-cruise purchase discounts frequently reduce these prices by 35 per cent or more, encouraging guests to book amenities before embarkation. These advance booking incentives help Royal Caribbean manage inventory whilst providing value-conscious cruisers with meaningful savings.

The recent pricing error, however, resulted in port day casitas appearing at rates below $200 – in some cases as low as $120 – representing discounts of approximately 65 to 75 per cent off typical pricing.

Guests Receive Cancellation Notices With Minimal Explanation

Passengers who successfully secured casita reservations at the erroneous pricing began receiving cancellation notifications from Royal Caribbean in recent days. The notices provided limited detail regarding the circumstances surrounding the cancellations.

“Due to an error on our end, we’re unable to honour your Port Day Casita reservation for embarkation day,” the standardised notification stated. “As a result, a full refund will be issued to your original form of payment within 14 business days.”

One disappointed guest shared their experience on social media, explaining the significant price difference. “I had booked a casita for $120 when they had a sale. They cancelled my reservation and now that same casita is $384,” the passenger reported on Facebook.

The cancellation emails did acknowledge that “the issue has since been corrected,” suggesting Royal Caribbean has identified and resolved the technical glitch responsible for the pricing error. Guests were implicitly invited to rebook at the corrected rates if still interested.

Passenger Frustration Mounts Over Lost Bargain Opportunities

The cancellations have sparked considerable frustration among affected passengers, with many expressing disappointment on cruise enthusiast forums and social media platforms. Some guests perceive the cancellations as a bait-and-switch tactic, believing Royal Caribbean should honour prices displayed on its booking system regardless of internal errors.

Legend of the Seas neighborhoods

Multiple passengers confirmed experiencing identical cancellations across different Icon-class sailings, suggesting the pricing error affected numerous departure dates and potentially hundreds of individual reservations. The consistency of the cancellation notices indicates a coordinated response from Royal Caribbean’s systems team.

For many guests, the casita reservation represented a special splurge to celebrate milestones such as anniversaries, honeymoons, or significant birthdays. The unexpected cancellation and subsequent price increase – in some cases more than tripling the original cost – has placed these planned indulgences out of reach for budget-conscious cruisers.

However, cruise industry observers note that passengers ultimately have limited recourse when pricing errors occur. Whilst disappointing, such cancellations fall within the operational parameters outlined in cruise contracts and booking terms.

Cruise Lines Retain Right To Correct Pricing Mistakes

Industry-wide, cruise lines maintain contractual provisions allowing them to cancel and refund reservations made at incorrect prices. These protections apply across all booking categories, including cruise fares, onboard amenities, shore excursions, and specialty dining packages.

The cruise ticket contract – the legally binding agreement passengers accept when booking – explicitly permits cruise lines to void transactions resulting from technical glitches, administrative errors, or system malfunctions. Full refunds must be provided, but cruise lines face no obligation to honour mistaken pricing.

This policy mirrors practices in other travel sectors, where airlines, hotels, and tour operators similarly reserve the right to cancel bookings made at clearly erroneous rates. Consumer protection varies by jurisdiction, but pricing mistakes generally do not constitute binding contracts in most legal frameworks.

Royal Caribbean’s handling of the casita cancellations adheres to established industry standards, even as individual passengers understandably feel disappointed. The cruise line’s communication acknowledged the error and committed to processing refunds within a reasonable timeframe.

Historical Precedent Shows Mixed Responses To Pricing Errors

Whilst Royal Caribbean has chosen not to honour the mistaken casita pricing, the cruise industry’s approach to such errors has varied over time. Historical precedents demonstrate that cruise lines occasionally make exceptions based on circumstances, guest relations considerations, and the scope of the mistake.

In May 2024, Carnival Cruise Line cancelled numerous bookings made during a systems outage and website update when fares appeared at dramatically reduced rates. Passengers who attempted to capitalise on the technical difficulties had their reservations voided and received full refunds, despite protests that the bookings should stand.

Royal Caribbean itself has demonstrated flexibility in past pricing error situations. In 2019, a website glitch caused beverage packages to display at just $18 per day – a fraction of the prevailing $55 daily rate at that time.

Initial cancellation notices were issued, but Royal Caribbean ultimately reversed course following significant guest backlash and honoured the mistaken pricing.

That decision reflected both the specific circumstances of the 2019 incident and Royal Caribbean’s assessment of the broader guest relations impact. The different outcome in the current casita situation suggests the cruise line evaluated various factors, including the magnitude of the pricing error and the number of affected reservations.

Looking Ahead At Icon-Class Amenity Demand And Pricing

The casita cancellation incident highlights the strong demand for exclusive amenities aboard Royal Caribbean’s newest vessels. As the Icon class continues to expand – with Legend of the Seas scheduled to debut in 2025 and a fourth unnamed sister ship planned for 2026 – the cruise line faces ongoing challenges in balancing amenity accessibility with premium pricing strategies.

Royal Caribbean has invested billions in developing the Icon class, with each vessel reportedly costing approximately $2 billion to construct. Recovering these investments whilst maintaining competitive pricing requires sophisticated revenue management across all onboard offerings, from specialty restaurants to exclusive pool areas.

Future technical improvements to Royal Caribbean’s booking systems may help prevent similar pricing errors, though no digital infrastructure can eliminate all possibilities of glitches. The cruise line’s brand reputation depends partly on how it handles such inevitable mistakes whilst maintaining guest satisfaction.

For passengers interested in booking casitas on upcoming Icon-class sailings, the incident serves as a reminder to screenshot confirmation details and understand that exceptionally low pricing may indicate errors subject to correction. Savvy cruisers should book legitimate promotional rates promptly whilst recognising that deals significantly below market value may prove too good to be true.

Passenger Sues Cruise Line and Spa Over an Alleged Sexual Assault

A cruise passenger has filed a lawsuit against the adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages and One World Spa after an alleged sexual assault that took place this summer.

The alleged incident took place during a 12-night cruise from Seattle to Alaska from June 11-23, 2026, on Brilliant Lady.

The 17-page lawsuit from Morgan & Morgan is asking for damages in excess of $75,000, exclusive of interest, costs, and attorney’s fees.

The complaint alleges that a crewmember led the plaintiff to a secluded grooming area for a shoulder massage, where the crewmember assailant locked the door and sexually assaulted her under the guise of providing therapeutic bodywork.

The lawsuit alleges that Virgin Cruises and One Spa World failed to adequately supervise their crewmembers and implement safeguards to protect passengers.

The complaint alleges the crewmember was able to use the booking system to schedule multiple unauthorized, after-hours massages despite not being a massage therapist.

The alleged assault occurred during the second massage he provided to the plaintiff in a secluded grooming area. The lawsuit states that the plaintiff did not consent to sexual touching at any time and the assailant’s touching was “intentional, offensive, harmful, and without legitimate purpose”.

The alleged assailant has been charged in federal court with two counts of abusive sexual contact involving passengers aboard the Brilliant Lady.

The plaintiff is a woman from Hidden Valley, California, who is using the pseudonym Jane Doe (E.M.) to protect her privacy. She is demanding a trial by jury on all issues so triable as of right.

Even though cruise lines usually do not run the spas on their ships, the lawsuit states that they are vicariously liable for the negligence of One Spa World and that they have a duty to protect passengers on their ships.

Spa workers are not employed by cruise lines, but by spa companies that lease space on the ship.

Morgan & Morgan founder John Morgan and attorney Garrett P. Keane, gave the following statement about the lawsuit:

“When someone steps aboard a cruise ship, they surrender a degree of control over their own safety and trust that the company responsible for their well-being has taken every reasonable precaution to protect them.

“Our lawsuit alleges that Virgin and One Spa World failed in their responsibility by allowing a crewmember to exploit his position and access to passengers and ship facilities to isolate and sexually assault our client. As a result of this alleged assault, our client has endured devastating physical and emotional suffering, and we intend to hold the defendants accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

The lawsuit was filed on September 10, 2026.

Disabled Cruise Passenger Responds to Ship Security Visit After Interaction with Teens

Kids can say some hurtful things. But for one disabled cruise passenger on a recent vacation at sea, a late-night interaction with a group of teenagers led to a visit from ship security.

In a reel posted on Facebook, the disabled passenger reported that he was accused of being drunk. He stated “I [have] cerebral palsy and that’s the way I walk.”

Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas in port at CocoCay
Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas

In this case, the passenger is comedian Josh Blue. He’s long been used to handling awkward or insensitive comments about the way he moves and turning those moments into something positive through his comedy.

In yesterday’s video on his Facebook account, however, Blue wasn’t going for laughs. He simply wanted to share what happened and encourage people to stand up for the disabled community.

A Visit from Security

According to Blue, the incident took place on the second night of a Royal Caribbean cruise he took this past summer.

Around 1:00 AM, security came to his cabin. A group of teenagers had reported to their parents (and the parents then reported to the ship) that Blue had tried to abduct them.

Blue said the actual moment was one he was fairly familiar with. He was walking up a set of stairs carrying two bottles of water. His girlfriend was right behind him.

At no point, he explained, were they closer than eight to ten feet from the teens. The teenagers reacted to the way he walks because of his cerebral palsy. One of them yelled “run,” and the group began screaming that he was coming after them.

Security initially believed Blue was drunk and told him they were going to revoke his alcohol privileges.

“I explained that I was disabled and that’s the way I walk,” Blue said.

His girlfriend then also chimed in and clarified that he has cerebral palsy. After that, security said they understood and that no further action was needed.

They told the couple they could go back to sleep.

But Blue stated that “it’s impossible to fall back to sleep after you’ve been accused of kidnapping children”.

Blue was quick to point out that no apology was given, and when they later spoke with a different security officer, they were told the situation had been resolved and no further action would be taken.

In the reel, the comedian made sure to point out that he is speaking out mainly to raise awareness.

Raising Awareness

To be fair, every cruise ship crew member is used to seeing drunk passengers on board. The security officers could have looked into the matter a little closer before this late-night visit, though.

But Blue’s purpose in posting the 3-minute reel was not to criticize the cruise line as much as to raise awareness.

“The reason I’m bringing this up with Royal Caribbean and bringing it here is because I’m very fortunate where I am able to talk about this and bring it to a platform,” he said. “But how many other disabled people out there in the world deal with this on a daily basis, not just on a cruise but other places.”

Blue added that he will not sail with Royal Caribbean again. He closed the video by encouraging people to stand up for the disabled community.

Comments Rally Behind Blue

The post quickly drew thousands of comments (over 4,000 at this time) from people who said they supported the comedian.

One person suggested the ship could have used the moment as a teaching opportunity: “I kinda wish they would have gone to each of the teenagers rooms, got them out of bed, with their parents. Sit them down with you and let them know about folks with disabilities.”

Another commenter who is also disabled and uses a wheelchair, wrote that she was angry on Blue’s behalf and thanked him for speaking up. “Thank you for using the platform you have to educate and advocate — we need this more than ever right now,” she said.

Brian Blackwell, who has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and deals with balance and mobility challenges, shared that he has faced similar assumptions of being under the influence. “This won’t help much but you’re not alone,” he said.

One comment came from someone else who also has cerebral palsy. She said she completely understood. “I often get asked if I need a waitress to call me a cab when I’m not drinking and can drive just fine,” she wrote. “Thanks for using your platform to educate others.”

Who is Josh Blue?

In case you don’t know, Josh Blue is a very accomplished American stand-up comedian who first broke into the national spotlight as the winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2006.

Born with cerebral palsy, Blue often incorporates his disability into his comedy routines, using humor to break down stereotypes and making fun of himself to sort of break down those barriers.

He has been on The Tonight Show and even gained a ton of notoriety when he appeared on America’s Got Talent season 16 in 2021. He finished in third place.

Blue has also represented the United States as a member of the U.S. Paralympic National Soccer Team.
