Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed changes to Carnival Sunshine’s upcoming Bahamas cruise after a powerful nor’easter delayed the ship’s return to her Norfolk, Virginia homeport. The knock-on effect means the next sailing will depart a day late, skip a call at Bimini, and run as a five-night itinerary instead of the originally planned six nights.
Why the Change Happened
Carnival Sunshine has been sailing back from an 8-night Canada cruise that departed Norfolk on September 19. According to Cruise Hive, rough conditions linked to the nor’easter affecting the US Atlantic coast forced the ship to alter course and slow down, prioritizing comfort and safety for everyone on board. That delay has pushed the ship’s return home back by a full day.
As a result, the next voyage, originally due to leave on Sunday, September 27, will now depart on Monday, September 28, 2026, and has been shortened from six nights to five.
What It Means for the Itinerary
The most notable change is the loss of the planned stop in Bimini, which simply won’t fit into the revised schedule. Nassau remains on the itinerary, but the timing has shifted. The ship was originally due there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30; now guests will visit from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. the same day.
Carnival explained the situation to guests directly, saying: “we will not be able to visit Bimini and the call on Nassau will now be from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday, September 30.”
The stop at Celebration Key, Carnival’s private destination, is unaffected and will still run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 1. The ship remains on track to return to Norfolk as scheduled on Saturday, October 3.
Compensation and Practical Details for Guests
Passengers affected by the shortened cruise will receive a one-day, pro-rated refund of their cruise fare, credited back to their original form of payment. Carnival is also refunding a pro-rated amount for any amenity packages purchased, such as drinks packages or WiFi, along with prepaid gratuities. Those refunds will be applied as onboard credit by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 29.
Anyone who had booked shore excursions in Bimini will have those automatically cancelled and refunded. Pre-booked Nassau tours will be adjusted where possible to match the new port times; any that can’t be rescheduled will also be cancelled and refunded.
Importantly, guests’ arrival appointments at the terminal remain unchanged, only the embarkation day itself has moved. Carnival is asking travelers to still arrive during their originally scheduled terminal appointment window, with all guests required to be on board by 3 p.m. so the ship can depart promptly.
One small upside: because embarkation now falls on a different day, the ship will not carry out the full in-person muster drill originally planned. Instead, guests will complete the check-in process via self-muster, though everyone must still register at their muster station before departure.
