Cruise Ship Barely Passes Health Inspection for 3rd Straight Time

For the third straight time, a cruise ship received the lowest possible passing score during a recent health inspection conducted by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP).

The ship was cited for rusted utensils in the kitchen, improper food storage, and missing logs regarding illness on board the ship.

All cruise ships that visit the U.S. are subject to two surprise health inspections each year.

National Geographic Sea Lion, operated by Lindblad Expeditions, scored an 86 during a health inspection where results were just posted to the CDC’s website.

The CDC considers inspection scores of 85 or lower as not satisfactory and results in a failing score.

The VSP found a total of 42 deficiencies during the inspection on the 62-passenger cruise ship. This was the ship’s first inspection since 2016 and 2017, when it also barely passed with an 86 during those two inspections.

Multiple deficiencies were found related to various technical areas across the cruise ship. For example, the 24-hour acute gastroenteritis (AGE) report was submitted more than 36 hours prior to the ship’s expected arrival in Sitka, Alaska.

An AGE-symptomatic crew member did not report their symptoms in a timely manner and was released from isolation and assigned nonfood-handling duties after only 24 hours of isolation.

Multiple four-hour manual halogen residual and pH checks were missing on several days of potable water production within the last month. The ship did not have the ability to measure the pH of the hypochlorous acid produced by the onboard generator.

Deficiencies

In the kitchen, sanitized vegetable peelers had rust on them. They were thrown away during the inspection.

In the main deck galley, clean dishes were stored in a drawer soiled inside with dried lettuce.

Refrigeration temperatures were too high, forcing the staff to throw away 50 containers of daily products.

Frozen fish were stored under the open stairwell in the freezer, which could allow debris from shoes to fall onto the food below.

Inspectors also found wrapped fish stored directly on the stairs in the freezer.

The ship was cited for not having proper notes in the Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) surveillance log. Also, a food employee with AGE symptoms was released from isolation 24 hours after their last symptom, instead of the required 48 hours.

Inspectors also noted that Legionella sampling of the potable water system was not conducted every six months. Also, the four-hour manual halogen residual and pH checks were missing on several days of potable water production logs.

And as with most inspections, there were also several extremely minor deficiencies pointed out by the inspectors. This includes things like a screw loose in the dishwasher to more than one day’s dust behind an espresso machine.

All cruise ships that sail to or from a U.S. port are subject to at least two surprise health inspections each year.

About the Ship

The cruise line has the following description listed for the cruise ship:

“Accommodating just 62 Guests in 31 outside cabins, the National Geographic Sea Lion is large enough to operate in remote environments in comfort, yet small enough to enter ports and inlets inaccessible to bigger ships. The ship carries sea kayaks and a fleet of expedition landing crafts, providing easy access to coastlines and other places of interest.

“All cabins have windows and are comfortably furnished with lower berths, private bathrooms, reading lights, and individual climate control. The National Geographic Sea Lion is authorized to operate in the Tongass National Forest under a Forest Service Special Use Permit.”

NCL Ships Delayed Returning to Honolulu as Hurricane Lala Passes Hawaii

The storm has officially passed. That’s the good news.

But Hurricane Lala caused quite a bit of damage across Hawaii after the Category 1 hurricane swept through the islands.

The storm caused all kinds of logistic issues for two Norwegian Cruise Line ships in the area as well.  Lala forced port closures, delayed ship turnarounds, and pushed back embarkation times for thousands of NCL passengers.

Over 180,000 Hawaiian residents were left without electricity, and about 100 homes were damaged or destroyed, according to news reports.

As the storm made its closest approach, the U.S. Coast Guard instituted Port Condition Zulu for Honolulu Harbor, basically closing Oahu’s main maritime hub to commercial traffic until safety inspections could be completed.

Now that Honolulu Harbor has reopened, here is where things stand with both Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit.

Pride of America Completes Delayed Turnaround

Pride of America, NCL’s year-round Hawaii flagship, spent the worst of the storm out at sea after offering passengers the choice to disembark early in Honolulu on Friday or stay aboard the vessel with some extra onboard credit.

Once Honolulu Harbor officially cleared on Sunday afternoon, August 16, the ship docked and passengers were able to get off, just a day later than originally planned.

To make up for the lost time, NCL modified the upcoming itinerary, including a shortened call at Kahului, Maui.

Norwegian Spirit Disembarkation and Next Embarkation Pushed to Monday

For Norwegian Spirit, which was concluding a 16-night transpacific cruise from Vancouver, the wait lasted a bit longer.

After skipping scheduled Big Island stops in Hilo and Kona to stay ahead of the weather, Spirit was originally scheduled to end its voyage in Honolulu on Sunday, August 16.

But because the harbor was backlogged because of all the extra traffic trying to come in, there wasn’t enough space to dock.

Disembarkation for Norwegian Spirit had to be pushed back to Monday, August 17.

As a result, embarkation for Norwegian Spirit’s next 16-night sailing back to Vancouver was also delayed by a day.

Don’t feel too bad for the passengers though, as they got an extra night on the ship while waiting for the gangway to open.

NCL Statement

In a statement provided to Seatrade Cruise News, an NCL spokesperson confirmed the delay and wished the best for the impacted Hawaiians:

“We appreciate our guests for their patience and flexibility over the last few days, as we navigated multiple logistical challenges due to the aftermath of the storm. We also hope for a speedy recovery for the communities in Hawaii that were impacted.”

Disney Cruise Line Reveals Disney Believe Details And First Look At New Ship Class

Disney Cruise Line has used its latest D23 showcase to reveal new details about Disney Believe and offer the first glimpse of an entirely new class of ships that will begin joining the fleet in 2029.

The announcements provide a clearer picture of both the cruise line’s immediate expansion and what will follow once its current generation of Wish-class ships is complete.

Disney Believe Stern Figures

Disney Believe, which is scheduled to debut in late 2027, will become the fourth vessel in the Wish class. Disney has now confirmed several of the characters and design elements that will feature prominently across the ship, including Tinker Bell, Moana and characters from Toy Story.

At the same time, Disney Cruise Line confirmed that the three ships due to arrive from 2029 will form an entirely new class rather than extending the existing Wish-class design.

The new generation of vessels will be positioned between Disney’s smaller classic ships and its newer, larger vessels, a move intended to give the cruise line greater flexibility when choosing destinations and developing future itineraries.

Disney Believe To Feature Tinker Bell, Moana And Toy Story

Disney Believe will carry a theme centred around “promise and possibilities”, with characters selected to reflect ideas of magic, adventure and believing in oneself.

Tinker Bell, from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 1953 film Peter Pan, will feature in the ship’s bow artwork.

The hand-painted filigree design will place Tinker Bell at its centre while also incorporating silhouettes of Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael, Captain Hook and Smee.

Inside the ship, the Grand Hall will be themed around Moana.

Disney Believe Atrium Figures

A bronze cast statue of the character will serve as the centrepiece of the space, accompanied by Pua and Heihei. Concept artwork shows Moana looking towards the horizon in an adventurous pose.

The surrounding Grand Hall design will continue the theme with wave-inspired details on the walls, a subtle water pattern incorporated into the carpet and Polynesian influences elsewhere in the space.

Disney has also chosen Toy Story for Disney Believe’s stern sculpture.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear will appear to be completing the ship’s name using oversized yellow crayons, extending Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of placing character sculptures on the sterns of its vessels.

“This ship celebrates belief in magic, family, the power of nature, and belief in yourself,” said Claire Weiss, Portfolio Executive Creative Director of Walt Disney Imagineering. “And all the stories we tell onboard will be tied together by the core Disney notion of believing in something fantastical.”

One particularly noticeable change will be the lettering used for the ship’s name on the stern.

Rather than using the familiar script-style font seen across much of the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Believe will carry its name in large, angled block lettering inspired by Toy Story.

The choice ties the ship’s name directly into the stern artwork, although it also makes Disney Believe visually different from the other vessels in the fleet.

Reaction among Disney Cruise Line fans has been mixed, with some welcoming the additional Toy Story reference and others preferring a consistent fleet-wide appearance.

“As part of the fleet as a whole I’m not a fan of the font, but as a stand alone ship I think it’s sweet and a nice homage to Toy Story,” one guest posted on Facebook.

Disney Believe is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Steel cutting for the vessel began on 8th August 2025, while Disney confirmed the ship’s name in March 2026.

The approximately 4,000-passenger ship is also expected to incorporate characters and stories from Frozen, The Little Mermaid and Encanto, although Disney has not yet explained how those franchises will feature onboard.

Its homeport and itineraries have also not yet been announced.

A fuller Disney Believe reveal is scheduled to be livestreamed on 7th October 2026, when further details about the ship are expected.

Three-Ship New Class Will Follow From 2029

Disney Cruise Line also used the Disney Experiences Showcase, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress to confirm more about the three ships that will follow Disney Believe.

The vessels were originally announced during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024 as part of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion to a 13-ship fleet.

Disney cruise ships compared

Until now, however, relatively little had been revealed about how the three ships would fit into the company’s existing lineup.

Disney has now confirmed they will form an entirely new class.

The ships will be larger than Disney Cruise Line’s classic vessels, such as Disney Wonder, but smaller than newer ships including Disney Wish.

That places the new class in the middle of Disney’s fleet by size and could allow the company to operate in destinations where the larger Wish-class ships may be less suitable.

Claire Weiss explained that the ships will be “right in the middle of our classic ships and our newer ones. That gives us some amazing opportunities to visit new places and reach brand new audiences we haven’t before.”

Disney showed D23 attendees the first teaser image of the new class during the presentation, with Weiss confirming that the preview had not previously been shown publicly.

Few further details were disclosed, including the names of the ships, their capacities, homeports, onboard attractions or intended destinations.

The first vessels from the new class are expected to begin entering service from 2029.

Their arrival will mark another major step in Disney Cruise Line’s expansion. The fleet has grown beyond the original Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy with the additions of Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure, while Disney Believe will follow in 2027.

Once the three newly confirmed vessels arrive, Disney Cruise Line is expected to operate a fleet of 13 ships, giving the company a considerably broader range of ship sizes and potentially allowing it to expand into additional cruise markets around the world.

Two-arrests-at-Port-Canaveral-after-fight-1.jpg

Asking Cruise Passengers to “Quiet Down” Ends in Stateroom Fight and Arrests

A couple of cruisers are in some hot water after getting into a fight after being told to “quiet down”.  In the course of events, a 9-year-old child was struck while inside the cruise ship cabin with two other people.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office pointed out the charges as Sheriff Wayne Ivey once again took to Facebook to describe the onboard incident in his own colorful way.

This isn’t the first time Sheriff Ivery has posted on social media about arrests at Port Canaveral.

You might recall when we covered another incident where six cruise passengers were arrested at Port Canaveral in a single day. In that case it wasn’t for a fight, but after routine checks caught outstanding warrants and probation violations, including one passenger wanted on murder charges.

Now, the Sheriff’s Office is back with a fresh installment of “The Chronicles of Cruising,” and according to him it’s a prime example of what happens when alcohol and zero common sense go hand in hand.

According to the post on social media, the entire ordeal started when passengers Gannon Jacox and his girlfriend, Brooklyn Hicks, were arguing loudly in the stateroom hallway after having a few too many drinks.

The post doesn’t specify how late it was or if nearby cruisers were trying to sleep, but apparently, some other cruisers not far away asked them to keep the noise down so they could sleep.

Instead of calling it a night, Hicks went over to confront them. Jacox made matters worse by pulling out his cell phone to film the altercation while encouraging Hicks to start a fight.

According to the sheriff’s post, the couple then forced their way directly into the guests’ stateroom, where a family, including a 9-year-old child, was inside.

A physical fight broke out inside the cabin. Jacox hit all three people in the room, including the child, while Hicks was wildly swinging punches.

By the end of the brawl, Jacox was left with a severe eye injury, which authorities noted came either from the victims defending themselves or from “friendly fire” courtesy of his girlfriend’s wild swings.

Fortunately, none of the victims suffered serious physical injuries.

When the ship (we’re not sure which vessel) docked at Port Canaveral, deputies were waiting to take the couple straight to jail. Sheriff Ivey held nothing back on Facebook when describing the fallout:

“Ok folks it’s time for another edition of “The Chronicles of Cruising” Brevard County style!!” Sheriff Ivey posted. “So what’s the moral of the story…if you can’t hold your liquor, then you definitely shouldn’t be out in public causing a scene like this and injuring random people including a child!! And if that memo is not clear enough for you then you might want to stay your butt out of Brevard County!!“

Jacox was charged with Burglary With A Battery and Child Abuse Without Great Bodily Harm. Hicks was charged with Burglary With Battery and Battery-Touch/Strike.

Instead of finishing their cruise vacation, the couple is spending time at what Sheriff Ivey calls “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge,” complete with “close quarter sleeping arrangements, communal showers, no drink packages and of course no excursions!!”

While the details about what cruise ship was involved have not been given in this case, this kind of behavior typically results in a lifetime ban from the cruise line.

Hawaii’s Cruise Ports Are Open Again — But Some Sailings Are Still Recovering

Hawaii’s commercial ports are open again after Tropical Storm Lala disrupted cruise schedules across the islands, giving cruise lines and passengers their clearest sign yet that operations are moving back toward normal.

The U.S. Coast Guard said all commercial ports across the state had reopened as of 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, following the storm’s passage. The reopening includes the commercial harbors that cruise ships rely on throughout Hawaii and marks a significant change from the port restrictions that forced ships to adjust arrival, departure, and turnaround plans in recent days.

For cruise travelers, however, reopening the ports does not necessarily mean every itinerary immediately returns to its original schedule.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Spirit had already been delayed returning to Honolulu after the storm, with berth availability becoming an issue as ships and other commercial traffic worked through the disruption. Pride of America also experienced schedule changes during the storm period, including an altered Honolulu turnaround.

That makes the next stage of the recovery largely an operational one. Cruise lines must reposition ships, coordinate berth assignments and accommodate passengers whose embarkation or disembarkation plans were changed while ports were under heavy-weather restrictions.

The Coast Guard had progressively raised port conditions across Hawaii as Lala approached, restricting vessel movements as forecasters warned of damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding and dangerous marine conditions. Those restrictions are designed to protect ships, port infrastructure and personnel before tropical weather arrives.

With all commercial ports now reopened, ships can resume normal movements subject to berth availability and individual cruise-line operating decisions.

The reopening is particularly important for Norwegian Cruise Line, which operates Pride of America year-round in Hawaii and also had Norwegian Spirit sailing in the region when Lala affected the islands.

Passengers booked on upcoming Hawaii cruises should continue checking directly with their cruise line before traveling to the pier. Even after a storm has passed and ports reopen, embarkation times, port calls and transportation arrangements can remain fluid while schedules are restored.

Cruise Addicts will continue to monitor Norwegian Spirit, Pride of America, and Hawaii port operations for any further itinerary changes or confirmation that normal cruise schedules have fully resumed.

Disney Believe Gets Its First Big Design Reveal Ahead Of 2027 Debut

Disney Cruise Line has revealed a major new look at Disney Believe, giving future guests their clearest preview yet of the ship’s interior and exterior design ahead of its planned debut in late 2027.

The new details were presented during the Horizons: D23 Disney Experiences Showcase and include the ship’s Grand Hall, stern character sculptures and distinctive bow artwork. Disney Believe was first announced in March as the fourth ship in Disney Cruise Line’s Wish-class family, joining Disney Wish, Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny.

The centerpiece of the newest reveal is the Grand Hall, which will draw inspiration from Disney’s Moana films. Disney says the space will reflect themes of exploration and the South Pacific, with a bronze statue of Moana as its focal point, alongside Pua and Heihei.

Concept art shows Moana standing prominently in the atrium-like space with her paddle in hand, surrounded by decorative elements influenced by Polynesian design. The Grand Hall will serve as one of the primary gathering spaces aboard the ship, continuing a tradition seen on Disney’s other Wish-class vessels.

Disney also revealed a notably playful change for the ship’s stern.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Pixar’s Toy Story will appear as larger-than-life sculptures on the back of Disney Believe. In the concept, the pair are shown using oversized yellow crayons to create the ship’s name.

That detail gives Disney Believe a slightly different visual identity from its sister ships. Rather than relying entirely on the familiar flowing Disney Cruise Line script, the stern treatment incorporates block-style lettering inspired by Toy Story.

The ship’s bow will carry another familiar Disney character.

Tinker Bell, depicted in the style of Disney’s 1953 animated Peter Pan, will anchor the decorative filigree on the bow. Silhouettes of Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook and other characters will be incorporated into the surrounding artwork.

Disney Cruise Line has long used character artwork to make each ship immediately recognizable. Those decorative details have become part of the line’s visual identity, with different characters appearing on bows and sterns throughout the fleet.

Disney Believe is expected to begin sailing in late 2027. Disney has already said the ship will feature stories and environments inspired by Encanto, Frozen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Moana and The Little Mermaid, with additional venue and entertainment details still to come.

For cruise travelers following Disney’s rapid fleet expansion, the latest reveal is significant because it begins to show how Disney Believe will differentiate itself from its Wish-class sisters rather than simply repeating the same design formula.

Disney has also created an official online Ship’s Log for Disney Believe, where future updates are expected to include construction progress from Meyer Werft, behind-the-scenes looks at Disney Imagineering and Disney Live Entertainment, and additional details about venues and shows.

That means this is likely only the beginning of the Disney Believe reveal cycle. More details about the ship’s accommodations, restaurants, lounges, entertainment, itineraries and homeport are expected as its 2027 debut approaches.

For Cruise Addicts readers already following Disney Cruise Line’s expansion, the new artwork offers the first real sense of the ship’s personality — and suggests Disney Believe will lean heavily into themes of optimism, exploration and familiar character storytelling.

Margaritaville At Sea Just Changed Two Port Days On This 10-Night Islander Cruise

Margaritaville at Sea has adjusted two port calls on an upcoming 10-night cruise aboard Margaritaville at Sea Islander, changing the order and timing of the ship’s visits to Aruba and Curaçao.

The sailing is scheduled to depart Port Tampa Bay on September 5, 2026, for a Southern Caribbean itinerary that also includes Grand Cayman and Jamaica.

According to a notice sent to booked guests and newly reported by Cruise Hive, Islander will now visit Aruba before Curaçao. The revised plan calls for the ship to arrive in Oranjestad, Aruba, on September 9 from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., followed by Willemstad, Curaçao, on September 10 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Earlier published schedules showed Curaçao first, with a noon-to-11 p.m. call on September 9, followed by Aruba from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 10.

The change does not remove a destination from the itinerary, but it could still matter to guests who have arranged independent tours, transportation or activities based on the original schedule. Travelers booked on the sailing should review their updated cruise documents and confirm excursion times directly with their tour providers.

The remainder of the itinerary is expected to stay intact. The ship is scheduled to call at George Town, Grand Cayman, on September 7 and Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on September 12 before returning to Tampa on September 15.

Margaritaville at Sea’s own website confirms Islander operates voyages from Tampa to destinations throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, including longer Southern Caribbean sailings. The cruise line has not publicly explained the reason for this particular port-order adjustment on its main website.

For cruise travelers, port-order changes are not unusual and can occur for operational, berth-availability, weather or other scheduling reasons. In this case, the most important takeaway is that both Aruba and Curaçao remain on the itinerary, but guests with independently booked plans should verify that their arrangements match the new dates and times.

Cruise Addicts will monitor the sailing for any additional changes ahead of the September 5 departure.

What Happens To Shoes Left Behind On A Carnival Cruise? Now They Get A Second Life

Carnival Cruise Line has become the first cruise line to partner with Sneaker Impact, a Miami-based organization dedicated to keeping footwear out of landfills, to launch a new shoe recycling initiative across its U.S. fleet. The program gives guests and crew an opportunity to give unwanted shoes a second life while supporting its ongoing efforts to reduce waste and advance circular economy practices.

Through the initiative, unclaimed shoes left behind on board, as well as those donated by guests and crew, are collected and sent to Sneaker Impact’s Miami facility for evaluation and processing, helping divert footwear that might otherwise end up in landfills. Using its proprietary sorting system, Sneaker Impact determines the most sustainable path for each pair.

Sneaker Impact then offers shoes in good condition to small business owners in developing countries who can sell the footwear to generate income while helping provide affordable shoes in areas where access may be limited.

For shoes that can no longer be worn, the journey doesn’t end there. Sneaker Impact recycles them by separating and recovering materials that can be repurposed into products such as athletic surfaces, yoga mats, footwear components and more.

“We’re always looking for new ways to reduce waste and strengthen our sustainability efforts,” said Benton Lobo, vice president of compliance and environmental operations. “In July, with just five of our ships offloading shoes, we kept more than 500 pairs out of landfills in a single month. Scaled across our full fleet, we see the potential to give new life to about 50,000 pairs of shoes. It’s proof that a small idea can add up to a real impact, both on board and in communities around the world.”

“Sneaker Impact is honored to partner with Carnival Cruise Line, as they share our commitment to sustainability and making a positive impact. Together, we’re making it easy for guests to give their unwanted footwear a second life through reuse and responsible recycling. We’re excited to see how many pairs of shoes, and lives, we can impact together,” said Moe Hachem, CEO of Sneaker Impact.

With this first-of-its-kind partnership, Carnival Cruise Line is continuing to advance momentum on Carnival Corporation’s sustainability strategy, which stretches across all its eight brands. More updates on this strategy can be found in the 2025 Sustainability Report.

NCL Offers Cruise Passengers Extra Days at Sea as Hawaii Braces for Hurricane-Force Winds

Just last month I wrote about the fact that Norwegian Cruise Line truly does own the Hawaii cruise market. But with a storm barreling down on the islands this weekend, the cruise line has had to make some adjustments to keep everyone safe.

Both Norwegian Spirit and Pride of America have been impacted by the storm, and passengers for one sailing were given the option to end the cruise early or stay on the ship for some extra sea days.

Norwegian Spirit and Storm Lala
Norwegian Spirit and National Weather Service radar for Hawaii on August 15, 2026

According to recent reports from the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Lala is currently approaching the islands with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, pushing tropical-storm-force winds out as far as 205 miles from its center.

A Hurricane Warning was issued for the Big Island as the storm made its closest approach, dumping between 10 to 20 inches of rain and bringing heavy surf across the region.

Hawaii isn’t used to these types of storms. Direct hits like this are surprisingly rare as the islands have several natural barriers such as volcanic mountains and cooler water temperatures surrounding them.

So, when a rare storm like Lala does roll in, operating two cruise ships in the area requires some last-minute changes.

Norwegian Spirit and Pride of America (CruiseMapper)
Norwegian Spirit and Pride of America positions on August 15, 2026 (CruiseMapper)

NCL has had to cancel a few ports in Hawaii including scheduled calls in Hilo and Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, as well as shortening visits to Kauai.

Here is how NCL navigated the situation with both Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit and what the line officially told guests.

NCL’s Letter to Guests

According to travel outlets like Travel Pulse, NCL reached out to passengers on Pride of America (The Hawaii staple) about the storm’s development with the following message:

“A developing tropical storm in the Central Pacific, southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, is expected to bring strong winds and challenging conditions to the region, resulting in the potential closure of the Port of Honolulu. To ensure we can safely arrive in Honolulu ahead of these anticipated restrictions, Pride of America will depart Nawiliwili on August 13, 2026, and proceed to Honolulu where we intend to remain until 5:00 pm local time on August 14, 2026.”

Extra Options for Norwegian Spirit Passengers

But for the cruise line’s second ship that also happened to be in Hawaii, some other options were given. Norwegian Spirit was on a 17-day sailing from Vancouver to Honolulu. The ship was supposed to conclude its voyage in Honolulu on August 16, 2026.

The ship skipped its final scheduled stops in Hilo and Kona on the Big Island to outrun the storm. Spirit docked early in Honolulu on Thursday, where NCL gave passengers these two choices:

  • Disembark Early: Guests could leave the ship in Honolulu on Thursday to lock in earlier flights or Waikiki hotels. NCL provided a prorated refund equivalent to two daily cruise rates for those stepping off early.
  • Stay On Board for Bonus Sea Days: Passengers who chose to stay on board got two extra days at sea as the ship headed back out to open water well southwest of Oahu to wait out the storm. In addition to staying on the ship through the original Sunday disembarkation date, these guests received onboard credit to compensate for the missed port calls.

According to reports from Cruise Radio, around 200 guests opted to disembark early while the rest enjoyed some extra time on the 2,000-passenger vessel.

Hilo and Kailua-Kona were the two ports canceled on the Norwegian Spirit sailing. While the extra sea days still make the duration the same (as the cruise will conclude in Honolulu on the same date), it does mean more time on the ship compared to getting off on August 13. Spirit is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu on August 16.

Personally, I’ll take extra sea days and some onboard credit to boot any day of the week. One Reddit user who is on board said it this way,

“We got to Honolulu yesterday morning and were given two options: get off the ship early on Friday, or stay on board while the ship rides out the storm at sea and disembark on Sunday. We chose to stay on board. Better to be safe at sea with food and drinks than trapped in a Waikiki hotel room with no power.”

Pride of America guests were offered a similar option to step off early in Honolulu on Friday or stay on board as the ship returned to deeper water to ride out the weather before Sunday’s final disembarkation.

Carnival Schedules Eight-Hour Booking System Maintenance For Sunday

Carnival Cruise Line has scheduled an eight-hour maintenance window for key reservation and payment systems on Sunday, August 16, 2026, creating a temporary interruption that could matter to travelers and travel advisors handling last-minute cruise arrangements.

Carnival’s official GoCCL travel-advisor website currently displays a notice stating that the GoCCL Navigator Booking Engine and payment applications will be unavailable for scheduled maintenance from 4:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 16.

For guests sailing soon, the practical takeaway is simple: if a payment, reservation change or other time-sensitive booking task needs to be handled this weekend, completing it before the maintenance window begins may prevent an unnecessary delay.

Cruise Hive, which surfaced the advisory, reports that the maintenance will affect a broader range of Carnival reservation functions. However, the portion Cruise Addicts was able to independently verify directly from Carnival specifically names the GoCCL Navigator Booking Engine and payment applications. Carnival’s public consumer website did not display an equivalent level of detail in the maintenance notice during our verification check.

That distinction matters. Cruise Addicts is therefore not assuming that every Carnival.com feature, the HUB app, online check-in or every pre-cruise purchase tool will necessarily be unavailable unless Carnival confirms those details directly.

Travelers with an approaching final-payment obligation, booking question or reservation issue should avoid waiting until Sunday morning if the task can reasonably be completed beforehand. Guests whose travel plans are unaffected by the maintenance window likely will not need to take any action.

Carnival describes the interruption as scheduled maintenance, not an unexpected outage or security incident. There is currently no indication from the official notice.

The maintenance is scheduled to conclude at 12:00 p.m. EDT on August 16. Cruise Addicts will monitor for any extension or additional passenger guidance.
