Royal Caribbean Passenger Takes Cruise Ban Dispute To Tribunal Over Card Counting Allegation

A Royal Caribbean passenger barred from sailing after being accused of breaking casino rules, including through card counting, has won the right to pursue a consumer claim seeking A$22,000 over five cruises he says he had earned through casino play.

Royal Caribbean Casino Royale

Mark Timothy Grant took the dispute to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal after arriving at the Brisbane cruise terminal with his partner and son and being refused boarding.

Grant had expected to embark on the first of five Royal Caribbean cruises which he says were awarded through his casino activity. However, the cruise line had placed him on a “no sail” list.

He is seeking A$22,000, representing the value he places on the five cruises.

The case does not establish that Grant engaged in card counting or other prohibited casino activity, nor has the tribunal determined that Royal Caribbean is liable to compensate him.

Tribunal Allows Consumer Claim To Continue

Grant’s claim was initially dismissed by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but he appealed that decision.

On 14th September 2026, Senior Member Samantha Traves allowed the consumer dispute to proceed, clearing the way for Grant to continue pursuing his claim against the cruise line.

The appeal decision concerns whether the dispute can proceed rather than determining the underlying allegations or whether Grant is entitled to the A$22,000 he is seeking.

Slot machines of Casino Royale

Royal Caribbean operates its Club Royale casino loyalty programme aboard its ships, allowing guests to accumulate points through casino play and potentially receive benefits and offers, including complimentary cruises.

The programme’s terms provide for benefits and offers to be withdrawn in certain circumstances, including when members breach applicable rules or are prohibited from sailing or gambling.

Whether those provisions entitled Royal Caribbean to take the action it did against Grant will form part of the underlying dispute rather than having been settled by the appeal decision.

Previous Casino Exclusion Dispute

Grant has previously been involved in legal proceedings concerning so-called advantage play at casinos, although that case involved a different operator and circumstances.

In a separate dispute involving The Star casinos in Queensland, Grant and another player challenged decisions to exclude them following allegations involving edge sorting.

Edge sorting is a technique in which a player attempts to identify cards by recognising differences or irregularities in their backs.

In a 2022 decision, the tribunal found there were no reasonable grounds for the exclusions under the legislation being considered in that case and set them aside.

That ruling related to The Star, different events and a separate legal question. It therefore does not determine the outcome of Grant’s current consumer claim involving Royal Caribbean.

The latest tribunal decision leaves the substantive dispute unresolved, with Grant now able to pursue his claim over the five cruises he says he was prevented from taking.

Is Royal Caribbean Buying Sandals Resorts?

The Financial Times is reporting that Royal Caribbean Group is close to a deal to buy a majority stake in Sandals Resorts International, a company with 20 all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The deal would put Sandals Resorts International’s value at $6 billion, and it would be Royal Caribbean Group’s largest deal in its history. They already own the largest cruise line in the world, Royal Caribbean, with 30 ships in service.

The FT said that if the deal goes through, Royal Caribbean would become the largest shareholder in Sandals, with the Stewart family retaining equity holdings in the company.

CNBC said that Royal Caribbean would buy a $3 billion stake in Sandals to own half the company, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The deal has not been finalized, but sources say an agreement could be reached in a few days. Talks could also collapse before a deal is completed.

Royal Caribbean’s stock ($RCL) dropped from $255 to $231 a share in the first hour after a potential deal was announced. The stock closed at $234.89.

Sandals
There are 20 all-inclusive Sandals Resorts in the Caribbean and Bahamas

This is not the first time that Royal Caribbean has looked into buying a resort. A few years ago, they were in talks to buy the Grand Lucayan Resort in Freeport, Bahamas, but the deal never went through.

The cruise giant also received government approval to buy the long-closed Xanadu Beach Hotel in Freeport in the spring of 2025. The deal went through this summer, and Royal Caribbean paid $30 million for it.

The Tribune reported that Royal Caribbean was also in the final stages of completing a deal to buy the Royal Oasis on Grand Bahama Island, with plans to use it to create a private destination for their guests.

Last summer, Royal Caribbean’s main competitor, Carnival Cruise Line, opened a private beach destination, Celebration Key, on Grand Bahama Island for their ships to visit.

Cruise Fever will have all updates if Royal Caribbean does, in fact, end up buying Sandals Resorts International and the new vacation options that could come to Royal Caribbean guests.

Royal Caribbean currently owns three cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea), and a 40% stake in the Grand Bahama shipyard.

Sirena-Cruise-Ship-Renamed-Ambella.jpg

Ambassador Buys Oceania Sirena For German Expansion And Semester At Sea Charter

Ambassador Cruise Line has acquired Oceania Cruises’ Sirena and will use the vessel to launch a new German operation in 2028, while also securing a recurring winter charter arrangement with Semester at Sea.

Ambassador Ambella Former Sirena

The 30,200-ton, 670-passenger ship was purchased from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and will initially remain with Oceania under a leaseback agreement through spring 2028.

After leaving the Oceania fleet, Sirena will be renamed Ambella and begin sailing for the newly created Ambassador Kreuzfahrten brand. The move will take Ambassador into Germany alongside its existing operations in the UK and France.

Ambassador’s entry into Germany follows its expansion into the French market through the acquisition of CFC, which has since been renamed Ambassador Croisière.

Ambella To Launch From Germany In 2028

Ambella is scheduled to begin its first Ambassador season in May 2028, operating an adults-only product developed specifically for German-speaking passengers.

The inaugural programme will run until September and comprise 11 cruises departing from Bremerhaven and Kiel, together with two repositioning voyages. Bookings are due to open in November 2026.

The image shows the front view Oceania Sirena cruise ship sailing on the open sea under a clear blue sky. The ship is white with multiple decks and windows, and a colorful crest is visible on the bow.

Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea will feature prominently in the programme, while selected itineraries will also take Ambella to Southern Europe.

Ambassador said the vessel’s relatively small size will allow the new brand to include destinations and ports that are less suitable for larger cruise ships.

The company plans to position Ambassador Kreuzfahrten towards experienced cruise passengers, couples and river cruise customers interested in moving into ocean cruising. Its onboard offering is expected to emphasise personalised service and upscale dining while retaining Ambassador’s focus on value.

Germany represents a significant expansion for the company as it seeks to build a broader European presence in the over-50s cruise market.

“The acquisition of the Oceania Sirena, its future launch as the Ambella, and the launch of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten represent a significant milestone in our journey to establish Ambassador as Europe’s leading cruise provider for affordable quality in the silver segment,” said CEO Christian Verhounig.

“When we launched Ambassador in 2021, we recognized a clear market gap for an affordable, high-quality cruise experience that is authentic, welcoming and accessible. We set out to combine the traditions of classic cruising with the standards and expectations of today’s guests, and this philosophy remains fundamental to our success,” he added.

Semester At Sea To Use Ambella During Winter

Ambella will not remain with Ambassador throughout the year. After completing its first German summer season, the vessel is due to be chartered to the Institute for Shipboard Education, which operates the Semester at Sea programme.

The ship is scheduled to host the fall 2028 and spring 2029 Semester at Sea programmes before returning to Ambassador for its summer 2029 cruise season.

Ambassador expects the alternating arrangement to continue over the longer term, effectively dividing the vessel’s annual deployment between summer cruise operations in Europe and Semester at Sea voyages during the winter period.

The acquisition also resolves the identity of Sirena’s previously undisclosed buyer. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings had announced the sale of the vessel earlier in 2026 without naming its new owner.

Sirena entered service in 2000 and was originally built for Renaissance Cruises as the fourth vessel in its eight-ship R-class series. The design subsequently became widely represented across the premium and luxury cruise sectors.

The ship will continue sailing for Oceania Cruises under the leaseback arrangement before its transition to Ambassador and conversion to the Ambella identity ahead of the 2028 German programme.

Royal Caribbean Reportedly In Talks Over Majority Stake In Sandals Resorts

Royal Caribbean Group is reportedly in talks to acquire a majority stake in Sandals Resorts International, a potential deal that would significantly expand the cruise company’s presence in the Caribbean holiday market beyond ships and private destinations.

Sandals Resorts Royal Caribbean Potential Takeover

The negotiations have not resulted in a final agreement and could still collapse, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the talks. Neither Royal Caribbean Group nor Sandals Resorts International has publicly confirmed that a transaction will take place.

Sandals, the Jamaica-based operator of all-inclusive Caribbean resorts, has been valued at more than $6 billion. If an agreement is reached, Royal Caribbean could become the controlling shareholder in the resort company, with the possibility of ultimately taking full control.

Sandals Resorts International has said it does not comment on market speculation, while Royal Caribbean Group has not issued a public statement on the reported negotiations.

Potential Deal Would Push Royal Caribbean Further Into Land Holidays

An investment in Sandals would mark a major expansion of Royal Caribbean Group’s interests outside cruising and give the company a substantial position in the Caribbean’s land-based resort sector.

Sandals operates couples-focused all-inclusive resorts across Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Barbados, the Bahamas, Antigua, Curaçao, Grenada and Saint Vincent. The company also operates Beaches Resorts, its family-oriented sister brand.

Founded in Jamaica in 1981 by Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Sandals opened its first property in Montego Bay and has since developed into one of the Caribbean’s best-known all-inclusive resort businesses. Together, Sandals and Beaches are also among the region’s largest private employers.

A controlling interest would give Royal Caribbean a business capable of selling conventional resort stays alongside the cruise holidays already offered through its brands. It could also create opportunities for cruise-and-stay packages or other combinations of land and sea holidays, although no such plans have been announced.

Sandals’ existing model differs from Royal Caribbean’s cruise operations but targets some overlapping segments of the Caribbean holiday market. Its resort packages include accommodation, dining, drinks, WiFi, airport transfers, gratuities and selected water and land activities within the overall holiday price.

The Sandals brand focuses on couples and has developed a substantial wedding and honeymoon business, while Beaches caters to families.

Royal Caribbean Has Been Building Its Land-Based Portfolio

The reported talks come as Royal Caribbean continues to invest in destinations designed to extend its holiday offering beyond the ships themselves.

Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas has become a major part of Royal Caribbean International’s Caribbean itineraries, while the company has also been expanding its Royal Beach Club concept.

Star and Icon of the Seas at Perfect Day

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau is part of that strategy, with additional destination developments planned for Cozumel in Mexico, Santorini in Greece and Lelepa in Vanuatu.

Those projects remain closely connected to Royal Caribbean’s cruise business, providing destinations and experiences for passengers travelling aboard its ships. An investment in Sandals would represent a different type of expansion by giving the group a direct interest in multi-night resort holidays that can operate independently of a cruise itinerary.

It could consequently broaden the company’s exposure to Caribbean tourism while opening opportunities to market different types of holidays to customers already familiar with its cruise brands.

There are also differences between the businesses. Royal Caribbean International caters to families, couples and groups rather than operating as an adults-only cruise line, whereas the Sandals brand specialises in couples-only resorts. Beaches, however, provides an established family-focused counterpart within the wider Sandals business.

Despite the potential significance of the negotiations, there is no certainty that they will produce a transaction. The reported discussions remain just that, and the companies have not announced an agreement, purchase price, ownership structure or timetable.

Until a deal is formally reached and confirmed, Sandals Resorts International remains independent and Royal Caribbean’s reported interest represents a potential expansion rather than a completed acquisition.

Could MSC Soon Own The Shipyard Building Cruise Ships For Its Rivals?

One of the world’s largest shipping companies could be preparing to make a dramatic move into cruise shipbuilding.

MSC is reportedly in preliminary discussions to acquire the approximately 80% stake in Meyer Werft currently held by Germany’s federal government and the state of Lower Saxony, potentially giving the shipping giant control of one of the cruise industry’s most important shipyards.

German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported September 21 that discussions are taking place, also citing reports from Bloomberg and the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung. Handelsblatt said neither MSC nor Meyer Werft has officially confirmed the negotiations.

No agreement has been announced, and the talks are reportedly still at an early stage.

That means a transaction is far from certain. Other potential buyers could emerge, and negotiations could ultimately conclude without a sale.

Still, the possibility of MSC controlling Meyer Werft would represent a fascinating shift in the cruise industry’s shipbuilding landscape.

Meyer Werft’s Papenburg shipyard is one of the world’s best-known builders of cruise ships. The company says it has delivered 61 cruise ships and employs approximately 3,200 people.

The German federal government and Lower Saxony stepped in to rescue the shipbuilder in 2024, jointly acquiring around 80% of the company and investing €400 million. The Meyer family retained just under 20%.

The government intervention was intended to be temporary while Meyer Werft worked through financial problems stemming from the pandemic, higher costs and the unusual financing structure of cruise ship construction.

In September 2024, Meyer Werft explained that approximately 80% of a cruise ship’s construction price is typically paid only when the vessel is delivered, requiring the shipyard to finance enormous construction costs before receiving most of the purchase price.

The intriguing part of a possible MSC deal is that the cruise company is already poised to become one of Meyer Werft’s most important customers.

MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft announced plans in December 2025 for four next-generation cruise ships, plus options for two additional vessels.

Known as the New Frontier platform, the ships are expected to measure approximately 180,000 gross tons and accommodate as many as 5,400 passengers. Deliveries are planned annually beginning in 2030.

In June, MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft said negotiations surrounding the complex shipbuilding contracts had reached an advanced stage.

An ownership deal would therefore potentially transform MSC from a major Meyer Werft customer into the controlling shareholder of the company building its future ships.

But the implications stretch well beyond MSC.

Meyer Werft has long built cruise ships for competing cruise companies. Disney Cruise Line has an extensive relationship with the shipyard, while Carnival Cruise Line’s newest Excel-class ships are also being constructed there.

Meyer Werft delivered Disney Destiny in October 2025 and says another Disney sister ship is currently under construction in Papenburg for delivery in 2027.

Carnival Tropicale, meanwhile, recently reached its steel-cutting milestone at Meyer Werft and is scheduled to enter service for Carnival Cruise Line in 2028.

That creates an obvious question if MSC ultimately takes control: how would the shipyard preserve the commercial confidentiality and independence expected by competing cruise companies building ships at the same facility?

There is no indication that current customer projects would be affected, and it would be premature to suggest otherwise.

Meyer Werft continues to describe itself as one of the world’s largest and most modern shipyards, with extensive expertise designing and constructing highly specialized cruise ships.

For now, the most important point is that an MSC takeover remains a possibility, not a deal.

If negotiations advance, however, the transaction could become one of the most consequential cruise-industry ownership developments in years—putting a major cruise operator on both sides of the shipbuilding equation.

Pete Tong Brings Ibiza Dance Music Experience To P&O Cruises’ Arvia

Pete Tong performed an exclusive 90-minute DJ set for P&O Cruises guests aboard Arvia during the ship’s late-night visit to Ibiza on Saturday, 19th September.

More than 900 guests attended the performance in Arvia’s SkyDome while the ship was berthed at Ibiza’s Botafoc Pier as part of a 14-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Southampton.

Pete Tong Arvia

The event brought one of dance music’s best-known figures to a venue aboard the 184,700-gross-tonne ship, with the SkyDome transformed into an Ibiza-style nightclub for the evening. Big Zuu and Melvin Odoom were among those attending the performance.

Tong said: “I’m still thinking about Saturday night. I loved playing in the SkyDome on Arvia. Thanks to everyone who came along and made it so special.”

An Ibiza-themed food and drink offering accompanied the performance. Guests were served Hierbas Ibicencas, a traditional herbal liqueur produced in Ibiza and Formentera using a blend of 18 locally sourced botanicals, including thyme, rosemary, mountain mint and citrus peels.

Ibiza-inspired cocktails and regional dishes were also available at Arvia’s Sunset Bar.

Pete Tong’s career in dance music

Tong has spent more than three decades as a DJ, producer, broadcaster and music industry executive and is closely associated with the development and international promotion of electronic dance music.

Pete Tong Arvia Skydome

His broadcasting career has included presenting dance music programming on BBC Radio 1, while his work as a DJ has taken him to clubs and arenas around the world.

His career was recognised with the Music Industry Trusts Award in 2021 for his contribution to music and broadcasting.

Pete Tong party in Arvia

Tong has also released a series of albums combining electronic music with orchestral arrangements. Classic House reached number one on the UK Albums Chart following its release in 2016, with subsequent projects continuing the concept.

“Bringing Pete Tong to Arvia in Ibiza was a fantastic opportunity to create something truly special for our guests.

“Pete has played such an important role in shaping the global dance music scene and having him perform exclusively for P&O Cruises in Arvia’s SkyDome felt like a perfect fit. We are always looking for ways to surprise and delight our guests with experiences they wouldn’t expect to find on a cruise holiday, and this was a brilliant example of that.”

Paul Ludlow, president of Carnival UK and P&O Cruises

Arvia continues Western Mediterranean itinerary

The Pete Tong performance took place during a 14-night roundtrip cruise from Southampton which departed on 13th September.

Arvia in Ibiza

The Western Mediterranean itinerary included calls at La Coruña, Malaga, Alicante, Ibiza, Marseille, Barcelona and Cadiz, with Arvia remaining in Ibiza for a late-night departure.

Arvia’s SkyDome is a glass-enclosed pool and entertainment space designed to host activities throughout the day before becoming an evening entertainment venue. Previous performers in the space have included the ship’s godmother Nicole Scherzinger and Take That singer Gary Barlow.

The ship entered service for P&O Cruises in December 2022 and operates a mixture of Mediterranean, Caribbean and Canary Islands itineraries.

The Pete Tong appearance added another high-profile music event to P&O Cruises’ onboard entertainment programme, with the Ibiza call providing a direct connection between the performance and an island that has played a significant role in Tong’s career and the development of modern club culture.

Port-of-Miami-1.jpg

PortMiami Welcomes 10 Millionth Passenger, Shattering Annual Record

PortMiami has achieved an unprecedented milestone, welcoming its 10 millionth cruise passenger on 14th September 2026. This marks the highest annual volume in the Florida port’s history.

The achievement came with more than two weeks still remaining in fiscal year 2026, representing nearly 17% growth over the previous year’s record of 8.56 million passengers.

Port of Miami

The scale of PortMiami’s growth becomes even more apparent when examining the numbers in detail. The port has added at least 1,435,775 passenger movements beyond the fiscal year 2025 record, with additional time remaining before the current fiscal year concludes on 30th September 2026.

This remarkable 17% increase represents a significant acceleration compared to the more modest 4% growth recorded between fiscal year 2024 and fiscal year 2025.

The dramatic jump signals that PortMiami has entered a new phase of expansion, fuelled by strategic infrastructure investments and an increasingly diverse roster of cruise lines choosing Miami as their homeport.

The historic 10-millionth passenger passed through the port on a day when six vessels were berthed simultaneously. This demonstrates the facility’s capacity to handle multiple large-scale operations concurrently.

Those ships included Resilient Lady, Norwegian Getaway, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Conquest, MSC Seaside, and Wonder of the Seas, though port officials did not disclose which specific vessel the milestone passenger sailed aboard.

Investment In Terminal Infrastructure Drives Unprecedented Growth

Port Director and CEO Jonathan Daniels attributed the record-breaking achievement to collaborative efforts across the entire cruise ecosystem.

“I’m immensely proud of our team and cruise and port partners, whose collaborative efforts made this achievement possible,” Daniels said in a statement celebrating the milestone.

“Reaching 10 million passengers reflects our focus on innovation, efficiency and superior passenger experience, as we continue to modernise PortMiami’s infrastructure and expand our capacity for future growth,” he added.

The port’s leadership has long recognised that accommodating modern cruise ships – particularly the newest mega-ships carrying 5,000 to 7,000 passengers – requires substantial investment in both physical infrastructure and operational systems.

PortMiami has pursued an aggressive modernisation programme designed to future-proof the facility against the industry’s rapid evolution.

These infrastructure improvements extend beyond simply building larger terminals. The port has invested in advanced passenger processing systems, improved ground transportation networks, and enhanced security measures that allow for faster embarkation and disembarkation whilst maintaining the highest safety standards.

World’s Largest Cruise Terminal Opens At PortMiami

Among the most significant additions to PortMiami’s infrastructure portfolio is MSC Cruises’ Terminal AA, which opened in April 2025.

The terminal holds the distinction of being the largest cruise terminal in the world, purpose-built to handle the enormous passenger volumes generated by multiple simultaneous ship operations.

Terminal AA possesses the capacity to process up to 36,000 passengers daily and can accommodate three cruise ships simultaneously.

This multi-ship capability proves particularly valuable during peak turnaround days, when several vessels discharge passengers whilst simultaneously boarding new guests for the next voyage.

Overlooking-Port-of-Miami

The terminal’s design incorporates the latest technology in biometric screening, automated check-in systems, and baggage handling.

These innovations dramatically reduce the time passengers spend in queues, improving the overall cruise experience from the moment guests arrive at the port.

MSC Cruises’ decision to construct such a substantial facility at PortMiami reflects the cruise line’s confidence in the Miami market and its strategic importance within the company’s North American expansion plans.

The terminal serves as homeport for several MSC vessels, including some of the line’s newest and most sophisticated ships.

Ten New Ships Choose Miami As Homeport During 2025-26 Season

The infrastructure investments have paid dividends in attracting cruise lines to base ships at PortMiami.

Between October 2025 and May 2026, ten additional vessels arrived at the port, significantly expanding the range of cruise experiences available to passengers departing from South Florida.

Several of these new arrivals were freshly delivered newbuilds, representing the latest innovations in cruise ship design and passenger amenities.

Windstar Cruises brought its new Star Seeker to PortMiami, expanding the small-ship luxury segment available from the port.

Virgin Voyages deployed Brilliant Lady to Miami, continuing the line’s strategy of concentrating its adult-only, contemporary fleet at strategic North American homeports.

The addition of Norwegian Luna, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest vessel, further strengthened the port’s relationship with one of its longest-standing cruise line partners.

Beyond newbuilds, established vessels that relocated to PortMiami during the 2025-26 season added sailing capacity and provided passengers with additional itinerary choices.

The diversity of cruise lines now operating from Miami – ranging from mainstream contemporary brands to luxury and expedition operators – means the port caters to virtually every cruise demographic and price point.

Royal Caribbean’s Terminal G Adds Future Capacity For Icon-Class Ships

PortMiami’s expansion plans extend well beyond the current fiscal year. Royal Caribbean International’s new Terminal G is currently under construction, with an anticipated opening date in 2027.

The facility is specifically engineered to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world, including Royal Caribbean’s Icon-class vessels.

The Icon class represents the cruise industry’s current pinnacle of size and sophistication. Icon of the Seas, which debuted in January 2024, displaced more than 248,000 gross tonnes and carries approximately 7,600 passengers at double occupancy.

A second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas, is scheduled to launch in 2025, with additional sisters to follow.

Terminal G’s design specifications ensure it can efficiently handle the enormous passenger volumes these ships generate during turnaround operations.

When a single vessel disembarks 5,000 to 7,000 passengers and boards a similar number within the same day, terminal infrastructure must function flawlessly to avoid delays and maintain passenger satisfaction.

Royal Caribbean has maintained a substantial presence at PortMiami for decades, and Terminal G represents a long-term commitment to the South Florida market.

The terminal will provide Royal Caribbean with state-of-the-art facilities that match the technological sophistication of its newest vessels.

PortMiami’s Strategic Advantages In Caribbean Cruise Market

PortMiami’s success stems partly from geography and partly from decades of strategic planning.

The port’s location provides unparalleled access to Caribbean destinations, allowing cruise ships to reach popular ports of call without lengthy positioning cruises that consume fuel and time.

Ships departing from Miami can reach the Bahamas in hours, making short three- and four-night cruise itineraries particularly attractive.

Western Caribbean destinations including Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica are easily accessible on week-long voyages, whilst Eastern Caribbean routes to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and other islands remain comfortably within range.

This geographic advantage has positioned PortMiami as the cruise capital of the world for years, but maintaining that status requires continuous investment and adaptation.

Competing ports in Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, and Tampa have all expanded their cruise operations, creating pressure on Miami to innovate and improve.

The port’s proximity to Miami International Airport provides another crucial advantage.

Passengers can easily fly into Miami from across the United States, Latin America, and Europe, then reach the cruise terminals within 30 minutes.

This convenience factor proves particularly important for attracting fly-cruise passengers who might otherwise choose ports closer to their home cities.

Economic Impact Extends Throughout South Florida Region

The 10 million cruise passengers passing through PortMiami generate substantial economic benefits extending far beyond the port itself.

Pre- and post-cruise hotel stays contribute millions to the local hospitality industry, whilst restaurants, attractions, and retail establishments benefit from cruise passenger spending.

Many passengers arrive a day or two before their cruise to ensure they don’t miss the ship due to flight delays.

Others extend their stay after disembarkation to explore Miami and the broader South Florida region.

These multi-day visits generate significantly more economic impact than simple day-of-sailing turnaround traffic.

The port itself provides thousands of direct jobs in terminal operations, security, customs and immigration, and support services.

Indirect employment in transportation, warehousing, ship provisioning, and related industries multiplies this effect throughout the regional economy.

Miami-Dade County officials have long recognised cruising as a cornerstone of the local economy, which has informed the county’s willingness to invest in port infrastructure improvements.

The return on these investments comes not only from increased passenger numbers but also from the ripple effects throughout the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Industry-Wide Growth Patterns Reflected In Miami’s Success

Industry-Wide Growth Patterns Reflected In Miami's Success

PortMiami’s record-breaking passenger numbers reflect broader trends within the global cruise industry.

Following the pandemic-related shutdown of 2020 and the gradual restart through 2021 and 2022, cruise demand has returned with remarkable strength.

Industry analysts point to several factors driving this resurgence.

Cruise lines have successfully attracted new-to-cruise passengers through innovative ship designs, diverse itineraries, and sophisticated marketing campaigns.

Younger demographics, particularly millennials and Generation Z travellers, are embracing cruising at rates that surprised many industry observers.

The introduction of larger ships has also played a crucial role in accommodating growing demand.

Modern mega-ships can carry substantially more passengers than vessels built even a decade ago, yet advances in design and onboard amenities mean these ships don’t feel crowded despite their size.

PortMiami’s infrastructure investments have positioned the port to capitalise on these industry-wide trends.

By ensuring the facility can accommodate the newest and largest ships, port officials have made Miami an attractive option for cruise lines planning deployment strategies for their most significant assets.

Final Passenger Count Expected To Exceed 10 Million By Significant Margin

Final Passenger Count Expected To Exceed 10 Million By Significant Margin

With more than a week remaining in fiscal year 2026 at the time the 10-million milestone was announced, PortMiami’s final passenger count will certainly exceed that figure by a substantial margin.

Industry observers estimate the port could reach 10.2 million or higher by 30th September, depending on ship schedules during the final weeks.

The upcoming fiscal year 2027 appears poised for continued growth, albeit perhaps at a more moderate pace than the dramatic 17% increase recorded this year.

Additional ship deployments have already been announced for late 2026 and early 2027, whilst Terminal G’s anticipated 2027 opening will provide infrastructure to support further expansion.

PortMiami’s achievement underscores Miami’s position as the undisputed cruise capital of the world, a title the port has held for years but which required substantial investment and planning to maintain.

As cruise ships continue growing larger and passenger demand shows no signs of abating, Miami’s early and aggressive infrastructure investments appear increasingly prescient.

The 10-million passenger milestone represents more than a statistical achievement – it demonstrates how strategic planning, infrastructure investment, and collaboration between port authorities and cruise lines can create sustained growth.

This benefits the entire regional economy whilst providing passengers with exceptional cruise experiences.
