Sydney-Cunard-Crusie-Queen-Victoria-1.jpg

Why a Tiny Detail Mattered

After flying halfway around the world with his wife, a British man was told he would not be allowed to step onto the Cunard cruise ship.  But it wasn’t the cruise line’s rules that kept him from boarding.  Every future cruise passenger needs to pay attention to the seemingly bizarre reason this happened.

Sydney Cunard Cruise Queen Victoria

The documents needed for a cruise vacation are not only important at the port of embarkation, but also for every other port that will be visited on the itinerary.  And cruise lines will try to take into account these ports of call, so there is no trouble for passengers once they arrive.

But sometimes, the matter is out of their hands.

According to news reports, a 78-year-old man from England, David Hornsby, flew over 10,500 miles from England to Sydney with his wife.

And while David’s passport was good enough to sail through immigration in Australia, it was at the cruise port that he ran into trouble.

At the cruise terminal, David’s wife was cleared and ready to board the ship.  When it was David’s turn, his passport needed a second look.

“We arrived at the cruise terminal, went to check in as usual, having already dropped our luggage off, and they looked at my passport and then called somebody over, and then took it away.  My wife was cleared for boarding, but they said there was damage on my passport, which there wasn’t.”

Hornsby said the only damage he could see was some loose stitching, but it was apparently good enough for the Australian border security.

In the end, Cunard said that David would not be allowed onto the ship and the couple booked $1,500 flights for the long trip back home.

“It’s a disgusting treatment. The passport was fully legal,” David stated.

old or damaged passports

Why Was the Passport an Issue?

The condition of a passport and any important documents really, are important for each country being visited.  Sure, the passport was accepted in Australia, but a cruise line has to consider all other countries in route as well.

But in the end, it was not so much the cruise line’s decision as that of the immigration authorities of another country.  Cunard explained the reason David was not permitted on the cruise, saying the following a statement:

“Our understanding is that Mr. and Mrs. Hornsby were refused embarkation to the ship by immigration officials at the international cruise terminal due to a damaged passport. The planned voyage included a port call to Indonesia, where they have strict standards for damaged passports. Unfortunately, the actions of foreign immigration authorities are outside of our control, and any associated costs should be directed to the guests’ travel insurers.”

The cruise line said they were sorry for the couple and understood the disappointment the travelers faced, adding.

“We appreciate this is not the outcome that Mr and Mrs Hornsby would have wanted, but this set of circumstances is not one Cunard can take responsibility for.”

Indonesia’s Strict Passport Policies

Recent reports have warned travelers to Indonesia of the country’s strict stance on passport conditions, referencing some that have been turned away based on this factor alone.

Set My Trip mentioned the increase in entry denials in an article focused on Bali travel, stating that, “Indonesian immigration officers have become notorious for their strict passport checks. Passengers arriving with a damaged passport could be detained and made to arrange their immediate return flight, often at their own expense.”

According to some, Indonesia has the strictest immigration standards in all of Asia, and apparently damaged travel documents are a major focus.

Bottom Line

The Hornsbys’ story is a good example of how easily a long-awaited cruise can go sideways if what seems like a minor detail is missed. It doesn’t matter how far you’ve flown or how much money you’ve spent; if your passport or other documents aren’t up to snuff with even one of the countries on the cruise’s list, you might have your own sob story to tell.

Cruise lines aren’t going to fight those battles for you, and they really can’t.   They are subject to the countries they visit just as much as every passenger on the ship.

So, if you’re not planning to travel for a while, it might be a good time to dust off that passport and make sure everything is in order.  Making sure you have at least 6 months before expiration when sailing on a cruise is just one thing to check.

This is also a good reason to make sure cruise travel insurance is purchased for every single sailing.

UK Port Renovation Complete, Can Now Welcome Some Of The World’s Biggest Ships

While Southampton is the cruise capital of the UK, another port has now completed significant renovations that could see it host some of the biggest cruise ships in the world.

Dover Cruise Port

The Port of Dover has announced a landmark milestone in its cruise capabilities, confirming that some of the largest cruise ships in the world can now dock at the Kent port for the very first time.

Following a £6 million investment, significant upgrades to the port’s mooring facilities have increased the maximum cruise ship length from 320 metres to 350 metres, allowing it to accommodate the newest generation of mega-liners from major cruise lines such as Disney, MSC, Norwegian, and Princess Cruises.

This marks a new era for Dover, already the UK’s second-largest cruise port, as it continues to position itself at the forefront of cruise tourism while boosting the local economy.

Peter Wright, Head of Cruise at the Port of Dover, celebrated the milestone, stating:

“Our 2025 season is in full swing, and we already see a diverse range of cruise ships bringing in thousands of guests each week during high season. Our vision for cruise will ensure that Dover remains at the forefront of the sector, whilst delivering economic benefits across the region.”

Prior to the expansion, the port already welcomed over 200,000 cruise passengers each year, with more than 20 cruise ships regularly calling at the harbour.

On peak weekends, as many as 8,000 passengers arrive to explore the surrounding area, including iconic landmarks such as the White Cliffs of Dover.

Bigger Ships, More Visitors

With the upgraded berths now able to welcome cruise ships measuring up to 350 metres in overall length, Dover is set to benefit from a greater variety of international cruise vessels.

Lines already calling at the port include Carnival, Fred. Olsen, Holland America Line, Saga, and Windstar – and now even more major players will have the option of calling at Dover on their UK and European itineraries.

Just last month, the Viking Vela made its first UK call at Dover.

The luxury vessel is one of four Viking Ocean ships – alongside Viking Jupiter, Viking Saturn, and Viking Sky – scheduled to make a combined 19 calls to Dover in 2025 alone, as part of sailings between London and Bergen and other British Isles routes.

The port upgrade is one part of a broader “Port of Dover 2050” masterplan, which aims to transform the waterfront into a regional tourist destination through a wide-reaching regeneration programme.

Key elements of the project include:

  • A revitalised promenade at Waterloo Crescent, complete with new pedestrian pathways and children’s play areas
  • A new commercial quarter featuring cafés, restaurants, and retail spaces
  • A long-term strategy to increase footfall and turn the port area into a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike

While a total cost for the entire regeneration project has not yet been confirmed, estimates suggest it could surpass £500 million, with major investments already underway across the seafront.

MSC World America was christened by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore in a ceremony that took place on April 9, 2025. Barrymore was joined by Orlando Bloom, who co-stars with her in MSC’s media campaign that launched during the Super Bowl.

MSC World America is the largest non-Royal Caribbean cruise ship sailing in the U.S. at just over 216,000 gross tons. The arrival of the ship coincided with the opening of the world’s largest cruise terminal that was built by MSC Cruises.

Drew Barrymore, actress and host of the Drew Barrymore Show, gave the following statement just before the naming of the ship:

“It’s such an honor to be MSC World America’s Godmother, and I can’t wait to cut that ribbon tonight and wish the ship smooth seas and good fortune for years to come. I’ve had a lifelong passion for travel, which has always fueled my soul and left me with the most awesome memories.

“Millions of people will create their own memories aboard this beautiful ship as time goes by, and I know they’ll have a blast experiencing everything MSC World America has to offer.”

MSC World America is sailing week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami. All cruises will visit the cruise line’s marine reserve in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay.

Norwegian Aqua

Norwegian Aqua in Miami

Norwegian Aqua was officially named and christened on Sunday by godfather Eric Stonestreet. The ceremony took place at Terminal B in Miami, NCL’s LEED Gold Certified terminal.

The christening event concluded with the ceremonial bottle break across the cruise ship’s hull, which was initiated by Stonestreet and signifies good fortune and safe travels for all who sail aboard for the life of Norwegian Aqua.

Eric Stonestreet, two-time Emmy® Award-winning actor, gave the following statement:

“As a new cruiser who has a deep passion for travel, it is absolutely spectacular to see the amazing features and experiences that travelers and their families can enjoy aboard Norwegian Aqua, including the world’s first hybrid roller coaster and waterslide, the Aqua Slidecoaster!”

“The team at Norwegian Cruise Line, onboard and ashore, are the very best of the best, and I am honored to serve as the godfather of the beautiful Norwegian Aqua. As part of the NCL family, I can’t wait for guests to ‘Experience More at Sea’ with NCL and create unforgettable memories with their families as I look forward to doing with mine as well!”

After a couple of sailings from Miami, Norwegian Aqua will head to Port Canaveral for seven-night cruises to the Caribbean.

In the fall, the ship will reposition to New York for a series of cruises to Bermuda before heading back to Miami. Once in Miami, Norwegian Aqua will sail seven night cruises to the Eastern Caribbean for the winter 2025-26 season.

MSC Foundation Celebrates Opening Of Marine Conservation Center At Ocean Cay

The MSC Foundation has celebrated the official opening of its Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay on April 10, marking a key milestone in its commitment to coral conservation and marine research in The Bahamas.

The MSC Foundation’s Marine Conservation Center will be a base for biologists, scientists, students and island visitors alike, and will feature interactive pavilions, a lecture hall, a Bio Lab, and a land-based coral nursery.

Marine Conservation Center At Ocean Cay

The new research facility will also provide educational opportunities for visitors on the importance of the marine ecosystem and the critical need to protect coral reefs and will be the hub for the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Reefs Program.

Launched in 2019, the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Reefs Program has been driving efforts to help restore coral reefs in the 64-square-mile area around Ocean Cay with coral species that are more resilient to environmental stressors such as rising ocean temperatures.

The opening of the Marine Conservation Center represents a significant investment in the future of The Bahamas, reinforcing the nation’s leadership in marine conservation and sustainable tourism. This facility will not only advance scientific research in line with the parameters authorized by the Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning and Protection and in alignment with national priorities of the Ministry of Education, Technical, and Vocational Training, but also provide invaluable educational opportunities for Bahamian students, researchers, and conservationists. Through partnerships with institutions such as the University of The Bahamas, The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute, and the Perry Institute for Marine Science, the MSC Foundation is helping to equip the next generation of Bahamian environmental stewards with the knowledge and tools needed to protect the oceans.

The Marine Conservation Center was officially opened on April 10 by the Chair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, Pierfrancesco Vago, with Diego Aponte, MSC Foundation Board Member and MSC Group President, Rick Sasso, MSC Foundation Ambassador and Chairman MSC Cruises (USA) and MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco, together with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Honorable Philip Davis, the Deputy Prime Minister, Honorable I. Chester Cooper and renowned marine biologist Dr Sylvia Earle.

Key Cabinet ministers from The Bahamas, local Bimini Council members, other dignitaries and key stakeholders from The Bahamas were also in attendance, together with other MSC Foundation representatives and partners.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Chair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee, said: “The opening of our Marine Conservation Center marks a defining moment in our multigenerational commitment to ocean conservation. It brings to life the MSC Foundation’s concrete plans for restoring coral reefs, advancing science, and creating training opportunities for Bahamian and international students. With the continued support of the Government of The Bahamas and local authorities, our work here is contributing to the circular economy through ecosystem preservation, regeneration, and knowledge sharing.”

Dr. Sylvia Earle, the renowned marine biologist and founder of Mission Blue, who participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony nearly two years after the NGO designated Ocean Cay as a “Hope Spot” — a site important to ocean health — said: “Bravo to MSC and the MSC Foundation for creating the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay, a treasured Mission Blue Hope Spot. The Center is a place to discover why the ocean matters to everyone, everywhere, and to inspire actions that can be taken to restore and care for the vast blue realm that makes possible the existence of life— humankind very much included.”

The new facility features a fully equipped bio-lab and The Aquaria, a dedicated land-based coral nursery housing 22 coral tanks to support restoration efforts. It also boasts a 50-seat lecture hall, providing a space for educational programs and scientific collaboration.

The center’s Welcome Hub and Discovery Pavilion will also offer immersive experiences for visitors, including guided tours, interactive exhibits, and hands-on coral restoration activities, fostering a deeper connection to marine conservation.

Daniela Picco, Executive Director of the MSC Foundation, stated: “This facility will connect marine scientists, educators, and the public, annually supporting up to 30 marine science students from four universities. By strengthening partnerships with Bahamian and international experts, engaging the wider community and making a bridge to hundreds of thousands of island visitors, we have laid foundations for lasting ocean stewardship and meaningful conservation efforts.”

Get To Know The Super Coral Reefs Program

The Foundation began collaborating with the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University in 2020 to develop the Super Coral Reefs Program through Florida-based graduate internships in marine science.  Since 2022, we have been focusing on identifying hardy species of coral at Ocean Cay, conducting research in accordance with parameters of permits authorized by The Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning and Protection, and propagating such types of coral species, mainly focusing on critically endangered elkhorn coral. The work builds upon MSC Cruises’ multi-year restoration of Ocean Cay’s marine ecosystem, which began when the company started redeveloping the former sand-mining site. The 64 square miles of waters around the island have since flourished. With the opening of the new Marine Conservation Center, the Foundation is scaling up its efforts.

Among the Super Coral Reefs Program’s successes to date:

  • Identifying high thermal resilience in some genetic populations of corals, focusing on critically endangered Elkhorn coral.
  • Developing techniques to grow coral in open-water nurseries.
  • Successful start to out planting resilient corals, aiming to increase out planting capacity over the coming years to 6,000 corals annually.
  • 100% survival of nursery-grown corals during the unprecedented marine heatwave of summer 2023.

Why A Cruise Is The City’s Best-Kept Secret

Rotterdam isn’t your typical Dutch destination. While other cities charm visitors with postcard canals and medieval streets, Rotterdam feels like the future. It’s a city of angles, ambition, and architectural adventure — rising from the ashes of World War II to become one of Europe’s most dynamic urban spaces.

But here’s what many first-time visitors don’t realize: Rotterdam is a city you understand best when you stop walking and start floating.

Because the story of Rotterdam isn’t told just through buildings or boulevards — it unfolds along the water.

The Maas River: Rotterdam’s Beating Heart

Running straight through the city, the Maas River is more than a backdrop — it’s Rotterdam’s lifeline. For centuries, it’s been the gateway to the sea, to trade, to the world. And even today, the river hums with constant movement: cargo ships, ferries, and river cruises all sharing the space with quiet confidence.

The beauty of Rotterdam is how naturally its modern identity connects with its maritime roots. From the water, this relationship becomes crystal clear.

You’ll pass by the city’s boldest landmarks: the swan-like Erasmus Bridge, the shimmering towers of De Rotterdam, the stacked cubes of the Red Apple, and historic ships moored like time capsules. But that’s just the beginning.

Why a Rotterdam Cruise Belongs on Your Itinerary

A Rotterdam cruise isn’t just a scenic detour — it’s the smartest way to grasp the city’s scale and soul.

Most cruises last about 60 to 90 minutes and include multilingual commentary that gives insight into the city’s evolution, architecture, and role as the largest port in Europe. You’ll cruise past modern marvels and active port terminals, with panoramic views that make everything feel cinematic.

On board, it’s a relaxed experience. Whether you choose a glass-covered boat, a classic river steamer, or a modern open-deck ship, you’ll find comfortable seating, refreshments, and ample photo ops. No crowded sidewalks, no traffic lights — just the city flowing past you, uninterrupted.

And here’s the kicker: because Rotterdam is a city built around its port, many of its most fascinating areas are only truly visible from the water.

See the Working Port in Action

One of the biggest surprises for visitors? How massive — and alive — the port really is. This isn’t just a pretty riverbank with a few ships for show. Rotterdam’s port is a vast, fully operational ecosystem: with cranes lifting containers like Lego blocks, tugboats maneuvering giants into place, and endless rows of steel and industry stretching to the horizon.

A cruise takes you right into the action, offering a rare glimpse into global logistics — but without the noise and pace of the real thing. You get to observe from a comfortable distance, while still feeling part of something massive and essential.

It’s the kind of experience that sticks with you — and gives Rotterdam an edge that other European cities just can’t replicate.

From Water to Wonder: Let Rotterdam Surprise You

Rotterdam isn’t about old-world charm. It’s about boldness, contrast, and transformation. It’s a city that reinvented itself, and keeps doing so — in design, in culture, in innovation.

A river cruise is the perfect way to witness this spirit in action. It brings together the best of what Rotterdam offers: striking views, rich history, active industry, and peaceful moments — all in one journey.

So if you’re planning a visit and still wondering what to do in Rotterdam, start with the river. It won’t just show you the city — it will change how you see it.
