Fishing & Cruise Ships – What’s Allowed And What’s Banned

If you’re an avid angler planning to embark on a cruise adventure, you might be wondering if you can fish off the side of a cruise ship.

fishing off cruise ship

After all – some people have done it before and posted videos or photos of themselves with their catches. And it’s a great spot for casting off, right?

Actually (and probably unsurprisingly), there are some pretty strict rules in place…

You Can’t Fish From A Cruise Balcony

Fishing from a cruise ship balcony is never allowed. This is due to the potential risks to marine wildlife and the potential safety hazards it may present to guests on board.

There have been some incidents where guests have been caught trying it, such as when a man was caught fishing from his Carnival cruise ship balcony.

Not only did this raise eyebrows over the ship’s fishing policy, but it also led to discussions about potential animal welfare issues regarding the exotic fish he caught.

A man that hooked a fish onboard a Carnival cruise ship

When you’re on a cruise, it’s important to always follow the ship’s guidelines and rules, including those regarding activities such as fishing. Violating these rules may result in consequences such as being banned from the cruise line for life.

So, although the idea of casting a line from your own cruise ship balcony may seem tempting, please don’t try it. It’s a really bad idea.

Fishing Rules On Cruise Ships

You cannot fish from a cruise ship for a few reasons, and understanding those rules will help ensure a smooth sailing experience.

Rules!

One of the main reasons fishing isn’t allowed on cruise ships is due to safety concerns. Cruise ships are massive and have high decks, which can make fishing unsafe for both the angler and those nearby.

The risk of injury from casting or handling fishing gear is high, along with the possibility of accidentally hooking a fellow passenger. Cruise lines want to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all their guests, so they have implemented strict policies to avoid potential accidents.

Another reason is practicality – cruise ships typically travel at speeds of 10 to 20 knots, which makes it difficult to fish effectively from such a high deck.

Even though you can’t fish directly from the ship, many cruise lines offer fishing excursions during port stops. These trips are specifically designed for passengers who want to try their hand at fishing while visiting various destinations, such as Alaska.

So, while you may not be able to cast your line over the railing of the ship, you can still enjoy the thrill of fishing during your cruise holiday.

Fishing Cruises

Many cruise itineraries include stops at ports with amazing fishing opportunities. In these cases, you’re more than welcome to bring your fishing equipment and enjoy some quality angling time on land.

There are also specialised fishing cruises available, which focus on providing the best fishing experience at sea. These vessels are designed with anglers in mind, and they usually offer guided fishing trips and expert advice, so you can make the most of your time in the water chasing your favourite fish species.

Make sure to research the ports of call on your cruise itinerary, plan your fishing adventures in advance, and enjoy the incredible locations you’ll visit. And always ensure you adhere to local regulations and fishing restrictions to guarantee both your safety and the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

Consequences Of Illegal Fishing

Fishing off a cruise ship is not only prohibited but could also lead to severe ramifications.

Firstly, violating the cruise ship’s rules could lead to a lifetime ban from the cruise line. You’d lose the opportunity to enjoy future cruises with that company, and this could tarnish your reputation with other cruise operators as well.

For example – Carnival Group owns not just Carnival Cruise Line, but Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, Costa Cruises and a whole host of other brands.

Another adverse consequence of illegal fishing is that you could create potential hazards for the ship’s crew and fellow passengers. Fishing lines might get caught in the ship’s propellers or accidentally entangle someone, leading to accidents or even damage to the vessel itself.

cruise ship propellars

Moreover, environmental concerns come into play. Cruise ships strictly prohibit disposing of anything overboard, and fishing off the ship falls under this rule. You could unknowingly contribute to pollution and potentially harm marine life.

Lastly, engaging in illegal fishing could spoil your cruise experience as a whole. You might face serious reprimands, fines, or even expulsion from the ship. Your actions could put a damper on not just your vacation, but that of your fellow passengers as well.

Bringing Fishing Gear On A Cruise

Generally speaking, most cruise ships allow you to bring your own fishing equipment on board. However, it’s essential to remember that your fishing gear should only be used on land or on a fishing boat.

Fishing gear

Before packing your fishing gear, it’s best to check the specific regulations and policies of the cruise line you’re travelling with. Some items may be prohibited. While you’re unlikely to be denied boarding due to an oversight, you may have your items confiscated until after the cruise.

You should also remember to pack your gear securely and appropriately to protect it during your journey.

Some cruise lines may allow you to bring a fishing pole as part of your luggage, while others might have restrictions on size or type of fishing equipment allowed on board. It’s best to check with your specific cruise line before embarking to make sure you are adhering to their guidelines.

Fishing equipment rental is usually available as part of fishing excursions offered by cruise lines.

If you plan on participating in a fishing excursion, it’s likely that all necessary fishing gear will be provided for you. However, if you’re going fishing independently at a cruise stop, you may need to rent equipment from a local vendor.

Cozumel Breaks Passenger Record in First Three Months of 2025

One of the most visited ports of call in the world just broke its own record.  The mayor of Cozumel, Mexico, Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, just revealed that the island has already received more cruise traffic in 2025 during the first 3 months than in previous years for the same time frame.

1,502,727 cruise passengers visited Cozumel from January through March this year, and those numbers are only growing.

“Last year, Cozumel welcomed 4,623,000 tourists. The goal is to reach 5 million. We will achieve this by working closely with the cruise companies, tourism entrepreneurs on the island, and internationally”, the mayor stated.

Representatives for tourism in Cozumel were at the recent Seatrade event in Miami, which is the leading international conference for the cruise industry.  Mayor Chacón Méndez said the event was helpful in making some key connections with cruise companies.

This Week in Cozumel

If you’re going to Cozumel this week (April 14-20), expect to see even more tourists. Port Authority officials say about 80,000 visitors will arrive on 21 different cruise ships throughout the week.

Here’s a quick look at how many ships and people are expected each day:

  • Monday, April 14: 2 ships, 6,501 passengers
  • Tuesday, April 15: 3 ships, 13,264 passengers
  • Wednesday, April 16: 3 ships, 13,904 passengers
  • Thursday, April 17: 5 ships, 18,297 passengers (the busiest day)
  • Friday, April 18: 3 ships, 16,246 passengers
  • Saturday, April 19: 2 ships, 6,136 passengers

What Makes Cozumel so Popular

Cozumel has really worked hard to make itself a top destination for cruise ships.  While it’s not everyone’s favorite port—it is one of my favorites–, the island is capable of handling this kind of cruise traffic with ease.

There are three main cruise piers, allowing some of the cruise traffic to be spread out to a degree, and this helps reduce wait times.  The deep-water ports allow even the largest ships in the world to visit the ports as well.

Cozumel is also strategically located for cruise ships sailing in the Western Caribbean.  Stops to the ports in Cozumel are often part of itineraries to Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Belize.

Planning on visiting this Mexican port soon?  Here are some of the best things to do in Cozumel.

‘Saddest Part of My Job’

“One of the saddest, most gut-wrenching parts of my job,” shared Carnival Cruise Line’s beloved Brand Ambassador, John Heald, in a more serious-toned message on his Facebook page this morning.

In his daily three-minute Facebook Live video, Heald took a moment to address an issue he sees happen over and over again: the financial fallout faced by guests who skip cruise travel insurance and are forced to cancel their cruises, with little to zero compensation.

Heald’s Heartfelt Plea: Don’t Skip Travel Insurance

Want to know why insurance companies have some of the funniest and most entertaining commercials on TV?  Because if they didn’t no one would pay attention.  After all, who really wants to think about insurance.

It’s the kind of thing you ignore until it’s too late, and then it’s all you can think about.

Heald, typically known for his upbeat and hilarious vibe, started his video with a very different tone this morning.  As someone who receives hundreds of emails and online comments daily, he has a pulse for the kinds of things impacting cruise travelers on a regular basis.

Acknowledging that everyone has a budget, Heald really wanted to stress how important travel insurance is. He explained that he often gets messages from people who’ve had to cancel their cruises due to things like getting sick, losing a loved one, or dealing with an emergency back home.

“They ask me–they beg me– to help them reclaim their money because, well they didn’t take insurance,’ he said. ‘Responding to you when you write that to me is so hard and many times even though their posts contain angry words and personal attacks against me, I know they are writing through sadness and emotion. Nevertheless, it really does tug at the heart strings.”

He then shared a particularly sad example.

“I had one of these yesterday. Somebody involved in a serious motor traffic accident, and it resulted in them being in hospital for seven weeks and no [travel] insurance. And they want me to reclaim 100% of their money for them.”

It led Heald to make a straightforward and heartfelt request to his viewers.

The Real Cost of Canceling

“I hope I’m not out of place to say to everyone please, if you can purchase travel insurance please do so,” Heald said.

He also touched on how it’s easy to think bad things won’t happen to you. “Of course, like most people, it’s human to say it will never happen to me… until it does. thank you for listening,” he finished.

Heald’s point is clear: travel insurance is a really important thing to consider, especially when you think about how much a cruise costs. Unexpected things like medical emergencies can end up costing a fortune, with things like emergency medical flights running into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Plus, those last-minute family situations that you just can’t predict can force you to cancel your trip. Having travel insurance can really take away that financial worry in those tough times, so you can just focus on the people that matter most to you.

He mentioned that he hears from a lot of people after they’ve had to face Carnival’s cancellation rules without any insurance to back them up.

Carnival Cruise Line Cancellation Policy

Generally, you can cancel most Carnival cruises without a penalty before the final payment date. However, some special deals like ‘Early Saver,’ ‘Super Saver,’ and ‘Pack & Go’ have non-refundable deposits or are non-refundable right from the start.

Once you’re past the final payment date, the cancellation fees go up as your sail date gets closer, and within two weeks of the cruise, you might not get any money back at all. If you don’t show up or have to cut your cruise short, you also won’t get a refund. You usually can get back any government taxes, fees, and prepaid tips if you cancel.

From the final payment date up to 56 days before sailing, the penalty is at least your deposit. This increases to 50% of the total fare (or the deposit, whichever is greater) between 55 and 30 days out, then 75% between 29 and 15 days. Within 14 days of your cruise, you’ll forfeit 100% of the fare.

While Carnival’s rules lay out what happens if you cancel, insurance can often cover those non-refundable costs if you have to cancel for a covered reason, like getting sick or a family emergency.

Your Financial Lifeline at Sea (and Before)

On top of that, it can also help with things beyond just cancellations, like those expensive medical emergencies (including getting you home), lost luggage, and travel delays – things Carnival’s regular cancellation policy doesn’t handle.

While getting excited about your cruise is the fun part, thinking about what could go wrong and getting travel insurance can give you real peace of mind.

And I get it.  Reading through an insurance policy is way less fun than looking up cruise ship tour videos in preparation for your getaway at sea.

But having the peace of mind of a good travel insurance policy for your cruise, will let you focus on the fun part.  And hopefully you never have to use that insurance.

NCL-Great-Stirrup-Cay-redesign-render.jpg

Cruise Private Island To Undergo Major Redesign

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has announced an ambitious transformation of its private Bahamian island, Great Stirrup Cay.

NCL Great Stirrup Cay redesign render

The update will include a long-awaited multi-ship pier and a range of new guest experiences. The first phase of the enhancements is set to be completed by the end of 2025.

NCL President David Herrera shared details of the redesign in a webcast interview with Travel Weekly editor-in-chief Lucy Huxley, and later during the christening ceremony of Norwegian Aqua in Miami on Sunday, 13 April.

One of the most significant developments is the construction of a multi-ship pier, which will allow vessels to dock directly at the island for the first time.

Currently, guests must be tendered ashore – a process that can be time-consuming and challenging, particularly in adverse weather.

“Tendering is not ideal, and tendering in the Caribbean can be a challenge in the winter months,” Herrera noted. “We’re fixing that and I can’t wait until we open up this pier in the next few months.”

New Attractions and Amenities

The redesigned Great Stirrup Cay will feature a host of new additions focused on elevating the guest experience. Highlights include:

  • A giant, heated pool described as being “tens of thousands of square feet” with areas for adults and children, DJ entertainment, cabanas, and ample loungers.
  • A welcome centre and island-wide tram service to help guests navigate the upgraded space with ease.
  • Vibe Beach Club, the adults-only retreat already popular on NCL ships, will be recreated on the island – though access will require an upcharge.
  • Horizon Park, the new activity space seen on ships like Norwegian Bliss and Breakaway, will also make its debut on the island.
  • A kids’ splash zone for younger cruisers.
  • A new relaxation area, complete with hammocks and “Tiki-inspired” elements for a laid-back, tropical vibe.

Importantly for guests, those with the top-tier drinks package will be able to continue using it on the island – ensuring a seamless transition from ship to shore.

“This island is already one of our top-rated ports of call, and the enhancements are going to take that to the next level,” Herrera said. “We’re sprinkling a lot more offerings so our guests can have a genuine private island experience while still having these additional amenities.”

The island’s redesign is rooted in feedback from NCL guests, who, Herrera said, are looking for authentic experiences that still offer comfort and variety.

“A private island is all about the guest experience, and the feedback we receive is that they want something genuine and authentic. We’re enhancing that experience.”

More to Come

Great Stirrup Cay was the first private island ever acquired by a cruise line when NCL purchased it back in the 1970s.

Since then, it has undergone steady development, but this latest revamp marks its most comprehensive upgrade yet.

Herrera confirmed that this is just the beginning. Additional features and upgrades are expected to be revealed over the coming months as the company moves towards launching the updated destination in late 2025.

With a mix of relaxation, recreation, and signature NCL experiences, the upgraded Great Stirrup Cay is poised to become a standout private island destination in the Caribbean – and a major draw for future NCL sailings.

British Couple Travels 10,000+ Miles Only To Be Denied Boarding Over Minor Passport Issue

A long-awaited cruise holiday turned into an expensive ordeal for a British couple after one of them was denied boarding their Cunard voyage in Sydney, Australia – all due to a minor passport issue.

UK passport

David Hornsby from Southampton and his wife had flown more than 10,000 miles to join a 14-night sailing aboard Queen Elizabeth, departing on 11 February 2025 from Sydney and destined for Singapore, with port calls in Australia and Indonesia.

But their plans came to a screeching halt at the Overseas Passenger Terminal when border officials deemed Mr Hornsby’s passport damaged.

Speaking to local media, Hornsby explained that everything seemed normal until check-in.

“We arrived at the cruise terminal, went to check in as usual, having already dropped our luggage off,” he said. “They looked at my passport and then called somebody over, and then took it away.”

While his wife was cleared for boarding, officials reportedly flagged the “loose stitching” on the centre seam of his UK passport – a detail Hornsby insists did not interfere with its legibility or function. But the damage was enough to prompt immigration to deny him entry.

The couple then had to wait several hours to retrieve their luggage before booking last-minute flights back to the UK at a cost of £700.

Cunard Responds

Cunard did not refund the cruise or flight costs, citing immigration rules as beyond their control.

In a statement, Cunard acknowledged the situation but stood firm in its policy.

“Our understanding is that Mr and Mrs Hornsby were refused embarkation to the ship by immigration officials at the international cruise terminal due to a damaged passport,

“The planned voyage included a port call to Indonesia, where they have strict standards for damaged passports.

“Unfortunately, the actions of foreign immigration authorities are outside of our control, and any associated costs should be directed to the guests’ travel insurers.”

While the couple did receive refunds for certain shore excursions they’d booked, Cunard has refused further compensation. Hornsby is now appealing to the line for either a refund or an alternative sailing.

Although the passport in question had allowed Mr Hornsby to travel internationally without issue up to that point, Indonesian immigration policies are among the strictest when it comes to passport condition. Even small tears, fading, or binding issues can result in denied entry.

As Queen Elizabeth was scheduled to visit both Bali and Jakarta, Indonesian authorities would have needed to clear all passengers well ahead of arrival.

Any passport damage that might cause issues at Indonesian checkpoints can be grounds for denying embarkation altogether.

Such strict interpretations are not limited to Indonesia. With biometric scanners increasingly used to verify travel documents, passports with even minor flaws may not scan correctly – and that can prompt a refusal from immigration officials.

Despite the frustration, Cunard’s terms clearly state that passengers must ensure their travel documents are valid and undamaged, and that refusal of entry or embarkation due to documentation issues is not the cruise line’s responsibility. The line advises all passengers to secure travel insurance in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The Hornsbys’ experience is a stark reminder that while a holiday might be months or even years in the making, a small detail like a frayed passport seam can quickly unravel the whole plan.

This isn’t the first time an issue like this has made headlines. Australian media has frequently reported on travellers being denied entry into Indonesia due to minor passport damage since the country tightened its border control policies in 2019.

While many travellers assume that wear and tear is acceptable, border officials ultimately have the final say – and with the rise in biometric screening, the margin for error is growing smaller.

Cruise Guest Says “Vaping is Not Smoking”: Carnival Makes Clear Response

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed a question regarding the cruise line’s vaping policy during his Facebook Live video this morning.   The question received enough attention that Heald felt the need to make sure everyone was clear on the cruise line’s policy.

Vaping on cruise ships policies from Carnival

Passenger Question Highlights Vaping Confusion

The question, submitted as “Monday’s letter of the day,” came from a platinum-level cruiser asking about the vaping policy for their adult grandson, a first-time cruiser and member of the Missouri National Guard.

The concerned grandparent wrote:

“My grandson, who is an adult, is going with us next month on his first cruise. We are both Platinum, but he has never cruised before. He does vape at home, and he is also a member of the Missouri National Guard, where he is allowed to vape. I’m just trying to find out why Carnival pushes vapers outside.”

“Why does he need to vape in smoking areas? He’s not required to do this at home, when on duty, or in his daytime job. Vaping is not smoking.”

Heald Clarifies Carnival’s Stance

Heald responded directly to the question, saying that Carnival considers vaping under the same regulations as smoking. “Well yes, it is,“ Heald stated.

He went on to say that many comments on the original post echoed the sentiment that vapers should not be restricted to designated smoking areas.

However, Heald firmly clarified the cruise line’s stance:

“Vaping is definitely smoking. The same rules apply.”

Carnival Smoking policy on embarkation day

He acknowledged that some individuals attempt to vape discreetly while hiding the vapors, but he stressed the importance of following the cruise line’s policy.

“Let me be very clear and say that if you vape, we respect that, but you must please respect the rules and only vape in the regular smoking areas.”

Heald explicitly stated the restrictions: “You’re not allowed to vape in your rooms, you’re not allowed to vape anywhere on the ship except in the designated smoking areas, and we thank you so very, very much for that.”

Carnival’s website provides locations on each ship for where passengers are permitted to smoke and vape here.

$500 Fine for Violations

If a passenger is found smoking or vaping in an undesignated area they can face a hefty fine.

Carnival mentions the fine on their website saying the following:

“As it relates to our ships, smoking is strictly limited to designated areas only, and never in your stateroom or on the balcony. Smoking in undesignated areas, including staterooms and balconies, and discharging any item overboard is prohibited and will result in a $500 charge, per violation.”

This reminder is also in all staterooms and throughout the ship.

And for those that think this if just for smoking, an added statement from Carnival says, “This applies to all forms of smoking, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaporizers, electronic cigarettes, and marijuana.”

Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras

This clarification from the Brand Ambassador serves as a reminder to all Carnival Cruise Line passengers that vaping is subject to the same rules and restrictions as traditional smoking and is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas.

Related: Embarkation Day Smoking Rules Addressed Last Year

Just last year, Heald addressed passenger concerns about new embarkation day smoking rules. He explained these changes are due to e-muster drills now using the casino and safety during refueling on open decks. He clarified there’s no full smoking ban but urged respect for crew regarding the temporary restrictions on the first day.

CDC-Inspection.jpg

CDC Denies That Recent Layoffs Could Impact Cruise Inspections

The cruise community has been sharing concerns over the safety of cruises following layoffs as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prompting a response from the agency.

CDC Cruise Inspection

Despite growing concern across social media and within the cruise community, the CDC has confirmed that sanitation inspections and outbreak response efforts aboard cruise ships will not be impacted.

This is despite the significant layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) earlier this month.

Worries intensified after reports revealed that employees of the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) – the unit responsible for monitoring, tracking, and managing gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships – were laid off.

The timing was especially alarming as the Seabourn Encore docked in Miami on Wednesday, 10th April with 35 confirmed cases of norovirus among passengers and crew following a 3½-week voyage.

Cruise fans and frequent travellers quickly voiced their concerns online, worried that a reduction in CDC oversight could lead to more unchecked outbreaks on ships already battling record-high norovirus transmission.

However, a CDC spokesperson has since offered assurances that VSP operations will continue uninterrupted.

The work is being carried out by U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) commissioned officers, who were not affected by the recent staffing cuts.

Ongoing Norovirus Surge Fuels Alarm

Concerns about the layoffs were exacerbated by a recent surge in norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships, particularly those operating in and out of Florida, home to seven major cruise ports.

The CDC has already logged 12 cruise ship outbreaks in the first four months of 2025, with 10 linked to Florida.

According to Verily’s wastewater surveillance programme, several sites in South Florida and Central Florida – including areas near PortMiami and Port Canaveral – have shown persistently high levels of Norovirus GII since late 2024.

Despite the CDC’s assurances, reports suggest that only one epidemiologist remains assigned to the VSP’s outbreak investigation team, and that individual is still undergoing training.

This has left some industry observers wondering whether the same level of oversight and rapid outbreak response can be maintained with a reduced team – especially as high passenger volumes continue during the peak cruising season.

The CDC, however, reiterated that key VSP duties – including unannounced ship inspections, monitoring and reporting outbreaks, and providing sanitation guidance to cruise lines – are ongoing.

During the Seabourn Encore outbreak, for instance, the VSP remotely monitored the ship’s sanitation procedures and cleaning protocols.

What Is the Vessel Sanitation Program?

The Vessel Sanitation Program plays a vital role in keeping cruise ships safe and sanitary for passengers and crew. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting unannounced inspections of ships sailing in US waters
  • Monitoring and assisting with gastrointestinal outbreaks
  • Reviewing new and renovated ship plans
  • Processing variances for onboard sanitation systems

Ships are rated on a 100-point scale during inspections, with a score of 86 or higher required to pass. Inspections are published online and often influence public perception of cruise cleanliness and safety.

Although staffing changes at the CDC and HHS have understandably raised alarm bells, the agency insists cruise sanitation inspections are not in jeopardy.

However, with norovirus transmission at elevated levels, passengers are encouraged to stay vigilant, practise good hygiene, and report any symptoms of illness while onboard.

For now, it appears the checks and safeguards that protect cruise health are still firmly in place – even if the team behind them has seen major restructuring.
