Will Medicare Cover Me On A Cruise?

Taking a cruise is a fun way to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the amenities of a resort. Whether sailing around the Caribbean, through the Mediterranean, or across the Alaskan coast, it’s important to understand how your healthcare coverage works while you’re on board, especially if you’re a Medicare beneficiary.

Medicare has specific rules and limitations when it comes to covering healthcare services during a cruise, particularly when you’re outside U.S. waters. Here’s everything you need to know about whether Medicare will cover you while on a cruise.

Medicare and Cruise Coverage Basics

Medicare coverage is designed to help with medical expenses within the United States, as well as in U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. So, if you’re someone who qualifies for Medicare, you may be looking forward to taking advantage of this coverage while traveling.

However, the situation can be a little more complicated when you’re on a cruise ship, especially outside U.S. territorial waters.

The short answer is that Medicare can cover you on a cruise, but only under certain conditions. To understand the full scope of this coverage, you’ll need to be aware of the specific circumstances under which Medicare may apply and the limitations that come with it.

Medicare Coverage Within U.S. Territorial Waters

If your cruise is sailing within six hours of U.S. territorial waters and the provider onboard can legally provide medical care on the ship, Medicare will generally cover medical services like it would if you were on land. U.S. territorial waters are defined as being within six hours of a U.S. port.

For example, if you’re cruising to Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico and you have a medical emergency while the ship is no more than six hours away from U.S. waters, Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) can help pay for your medical care.

Medicare Coverage Outside U.S. Waters

Medicare’s coverage becomes more restricted once your cruise ship sails more than six hours away from U.S. territorial waters. Generally, Original Medicare will not cover healthcare services outside of U.S. waters or on foreign soil.

It is possible for Medicare to cover you in foreign waters if you’re in U.S. waters and a foreign hospital is closer and can provide the care you need. Otherwise, you should expect no Medicare coverage when you are more than six hours away from U.S. waters.

Medicare Advantage Plans and Cruises

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, offered by private insurance companies, may have different rules for covering medical care while on a cruise. Medicare Advantage plans must provide at least the same level of emergency care coverage as Original Medicare, but some plans may offer additional benefits that can extend coverage for medical care in more international locations.

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer specific travel coverage benefits, so reviewing your plan’s details before you leave is important. For instance, some plans may include access to a broader network of international providers or offer coverage for emergency services outside the U.S. if you’re more than six hours away from a U.S. port. However, the availability and extent of this coverage vary from plan to plan.

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Coverage for Cruises

If you have Original Medicare, a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy can help cover some of the gaps in your Medicare coverage while traveling, including during a cruise. Certain Medigap plans also offer limited coverage for emergency medical care abroad.

These plans will pay for 80% of the cost of medically necessary emergency care while traveling outside the U.S., but only during the first 60 days of your trip and after you meet a $250 annual deductible. Additionally, the lifetime limit for foreign travel emergency coverage under Medigap is $50,000.

While this can provide peace of mind for emergencies, Medigap will not cover routine care or non-emergency services.

Travel Insurance for Cruises

Given the limited scope of Medicare’s coverage during a cruise, many Medicare beneficiaries enroll in stand-alone travel insurance to have coverage if needed. Travel insurance can be beneficial if your cruise takes you to international waters or foreign ports.

When looking for travel insurance, you may consider policies that include coverage for emergency medical care, medical evacuation, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and more.

Prescriptions and Medical Supplies on a Cruise

If you’re on a cruise and need prescription medications, Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) can still help, but only at participating U.S. pharmacies. This means you’ll want to plan ahead and bring enough medication to last for your trip, as your Medicare plan may not cover getting a refill while on the ship or at a foreign port.

Before you depart, consult with your healthcare provider to ensure you have a good supply of medications. You may also want to bring a copy of your prescriptions to prepare for any potential issues while traveling.

Be Prepared Before You Sail

While Medicare does provide some level of coverage during a cruise, it’s important to understand its limitations. Coverage generally applies to emergency care within U.S. waters or near U.S. ports, but outside these boundaries, your protection can become much more limited or none.

If you plan to take a cruise, review your Medicare plan carefully and consider whether you need additional coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan, Medigap policy, or travel insurance. Being prepared will allow you to focus on enjoying your trip, knowing you’re covered in an emergency.

The Cruise Industry’s Response To Port Bans

The cruise industry faces significant challenges as it seeks to persuade a key port to reconsider its ban on large cruise ships. Major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, are at risk of excluding this port from their itineraries due to the restrictions. This situation is part of a broader trend where many popular tourist destinations implement similar bans to address over-tourism and environmental concerns. Cities such as Venice, Barcelona, and Bar Harbor, Maine, have already enacted such measures, reflecting a global shift toward regulating cruise ship traffic.

Understanding the Reasons Behind Port Bans

The primary reasons for these port bans are concerns about over-tourism and environmental impact. Overtourism can overwhelm local communities, leading to negative experiences for residents and visitors. For instance, Venice has struggled with the sheer volume of tourists, prompting authorities to impose strict regulations on cruise ship access. Additionally, the environmental effects of large cruise ships, including pollution and habitat disruption, have led to increased scrutiny and demands for sustainable practices within the industry.

The Impact on Cruise Lines and Travelers

These port bans present substantial economic challenges for cruise lines. The need to alter itineraries and exclude popular destinations can have significant financial implications. Cruise companies are exploring various strategies to mitigate these impacts, such as developing new routes and investing in sustainable technologies. These changes also affect travelers, as they may experience altered travel plans and itineraries. However, these shifts also offer opportunities for more sustainable and culturally enriching travel experiences.

The Future of Cruise Tourism in Popular Destinations

The future of cruise tourism in popular destinations depends on effectively navigating regulatory challenges and fostering collaboration between cruise lines and port authorities. Innovations in technology and operations are essential for addressing environmental and overtourism concerns. Cruise lines are increasingly adopting sustainable practices and engaging in negotiations to find mutually beneficial solutions. By balancing tourism and sustainability, the cruise industry can ensure a viable future while preserving the integrity of the destinations it visits.

Balancing Tourism and Sustainability

The cruise industry is at a pivotal point, facing challenges and opportunities as it adapts to new regulations and market demands. The path forward involves embracing sustainable practices and fostering collaboration with port cities to ensure a balanced approach to tourism. By doing so, the cruise industry can continue to offer enriching travel experiences while contributing to the preservation of the world’s most cherished destinations.

New Bahamas Port Will Debut In Five Months

Carnival Cruise Line guests are just five months away from experiencing Celebration Key’s five portals to paradise. To kick off the countdown to the official opening on July 19, Carnival Corporation & plc’s Chief Executive Officer Josh Weinstein and Chief Maritime Officer Lars Ljoen joined Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy for a behind-the-scenes look at this new exclusive destination on Grand Bahama as construction enters its final phases.

They marked milestones in construction progress across the expansive beachfront destination and highlighted Celebration Key’s sustainability commitment. In a nod to the maritime tradition of a keel laying for a new ship, they placed commemorative keys into Celebration Key’s signature Suncastle, the centerpiece of the destination’s five portals.

First Look: Five Months Away from Unlocking Five Portals to Paradise

To kick off the countdown to the destination’s opening, Carnival Corporation & plc’s Chief Executive Officer Josh Weinstein and Chief Maritime Officer Lars Ljoen joined Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy for a behind-the-scenes look at its construction on Grand Bahama.

The Suncastle stands 10-stories tall near Paradise Plaza, the first portal guests will encounter that serves as a gateway to the destination’s other areas. The Suncastle is also home to racing waterslides that are part of the portal geared toward families, Starfish Lagoon, and endless other recreation and relaxation options. The destination’s adult-focused portal, Calypso Lagoon, features an adult-only area with a DJ island and a large swim-up bar. Pearl Cove Beach Club is a private portal offering a premium adult-only experience with an infinity pool and beachfront cabanas. The fifth portal, Lokono Cove, is an artisan retail village celebrating Bahamian culture through local art and handmade goods.

“Celebration Key represents a new chapter for Carnival and its construction builds on our close partnership with The Bahamas, so seeing it transform from vision to reality is incredible.”  – Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line

During their tour, the Carnival leaders also joined team members planting palm trees from the “Plant a Tree” community engagement program launched last year as part of a broad preservation initiative that has involved replanting thousands of native trees across the property. About 1,000 sabal palms were saved and replanted across the property. Duffy also participated in the ceremonial filling of one of two expansive freshwater lagoons, the largest in the Caribbean*, sustained by Celebration Key’s desalination system that converts seawater into freshwater. The lagoons span over seven acres and hold about seven million gallons of water.

“Celebration Key represents a new chapter for Carnival, and its construction builds on our close partnership with The Bahamas. Seeing it transform from vision to reality is incredible,” said Duffy. “We broke ground on this site less than three years ago, and now, in five short months, we’ll see our first guests enjoy the many experiences we created just for them to celebrate and enjoy this gorgeous place on Grand Bahama.”

Construction Continues

About 500 workers are on site daily as construction continues round-the-clock to prepare the destination for its summer opening, when Carnival Vista will make the inaugural call on July 19. Celebration Key will deliver Carnival’s signature brand of fun while honoring local heritage and supporting Grand Bahama through job creation and economic development. To date, 28 Bahamian companies have contributed to the project.

“This destination will serve as a tribute to the rich Bahamian culture and Grand Bahama’s natural environment,” said Weinstein. “It’s clear Celebration Key will be a game-changer for our flagship brand and its loyal guests, with endless options for relaxation and recreation, but it’s also truly great to see firsthand how we’re implementing our company’s robust sustainability initiatives on land.”

Carnival continues to offer new options and features for guests as they plan their Celebration Key experience. New at Pearl Cove Beach Club are beachfront daybeds, private cabanas, and exclusive Super Villas, which will soon be available for booking. Each accommodation option includes access to the club’s open bar service, infinity pool, full-service restaurant, and premium beachfront access.

MSC World America Passes Sea Trials Ahead of Debut in Miami

MSC Cruises’ newest mega cruise ship, MSC World America, successfully completed sea trials this week. The ship will make its debut in Miami in April and can carry almost 9,000 passengers and crew members.

MSC World America in sea trials

MSC World America is the newest flagship from MSC Cruises, the third largest cruise line in the world. All new cruise ships are required to go through sea trials to make sure the vessel is seaworthy.

During the ship’s sea trials, everything was checked from the performance of the ship’s engines, maneuverability, fuel consumption, safety systems, speed and stopping distances.

Now that MSC World America has passed sea trials, the vessel will receive her finishing touches at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France. MSC Cruises will officially take delivery of the ship on March 27.

MSC World America will sail her maiden voyage from Miami, Florida on April 12, 2025, a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean.

The mega 216,638 gross ton cruise ship will use the new Terminal AA/AAA at PortMiami, the largest cruise terminal in the world.

MSC World America has 19 dining venues and 18 bars and lounges. The ship is divided up into seven districts with a little something for everyone.

Two new concepts will debut on the ship. The All-Stars Sports Bar will offer an authentic game-day atmosphere with all-American flair and bar games. The Loft is a multi-purpose venue for comedy, karaoke and more.

The ship has 2,614 cabins with a capacity of 6,762 passengers. It has 22 decks and more than 413,000 square feet of public space.

MSC World America will sail seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from the Cruise Capital of the World, PortMiami.  All cruises will also visit the cruise line’s private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The ship is powered by LNG and has an advanced wastewater treatment plant and a comprehensive on-board recycling management plant to minimize waste. This is all part of MSC Cruises’ sustainability goals.

MSC World America’s use of LNG enables a direct transition towards drop-in bio and synthetic renewable LNG fuels.

The vessel is also fitted with shore power connectivity, which allows the ship’s engines to be switched off while in port. This helps eliminate local emissions and improve local air quality and the new MSC Cruise Terminal is equipped with shore power capability.

MSC World America is the second ship in its class. MSC World Asia will enter service next year with a fourth, and currently unnamed ship, coming out in 2027.

MSC World America will be christened on April 9, 2025 and then sail a short three-day preview cruise for media and travel agents before the maiden voyage.

The Life Of A Cruise Ship Destination Speaker – CruiseMiss.com

The Life Of A Cruise Ship Destination Speaker

And what do you do? That’s a question I am often asked when on land, and when I reply, the response “A what?” comes back. Let me tell you more about me, and answer the questions that I am often asked.

My name is Hazel, and I am a Destination Speaker.

My first career was in banking and after 20 years, I was disillusioned and needed a change. I had no idea what I would do next – but I already knew I loved travelling, and cruising was my ideal mode. A chance encounter with a Destination Speaker led to me asking “And how did you get a job like that?”

Having thought it through, it sounded like something that really appealed to me. I needed to have another job on land as well – I still need to pay my bills even when I am away!

What is a Destination Speaker?

A member of the Entertainment team who helps people make the most of their days ashore.

I must never forget that people are on holiday, so they do want to be entertained, but they also want to know more about the places being visited. There’s a fine balance there – entertainment doesn’t mean I have them laughing at a comedy routine – but equally it can’t be a dull and boring lecture. Public speaking skills are essential. Storytelling is a skill that can be honed.

What do you talk about?

I cover the geography and history to put the place in context, the key things to see and how to access them. I usually build the talk as a virtual journey around the port so that people can easily know how much they can achieve ashore, depending on their stamina and mobility.

Cruise ports vary greatly in size – and gradient. We can look at a map in our guidebook and every place is the same size (one page!) but, in reality, the scale can be very different – as can the gradient, maps in books are very FLAT!

So, my role is to make the port real, to enable good decisions to maximise the time ashore. I cover local transport, taxis and Sightseeing buses. Some cruise lines want me to talk about the Excursions on offer. Safety and money hints are also included.

Some guests do a lot of research before sailing and know exactly what they plan to do – but many people are too busy pre-holiday to spend the time researching and that’s why I am there. To focus their minds on what to see, reveal something new, and maybe bring a touch of realism.  Sometimes the thing they want to see can be many miles away, and not practical in a day visit.

Does the cruise line provide you with a script?

I think this is the most common preconception. Every talk I give has been hand crafted by me, alone. I spend about 100 hours writing each new talk – it will then be updated on future visits. In fact, I start updating it as we leave the port – adding the new photos and information I gleaned that day, whilst it’s all fresh in my mind. Before each cruise I check websites for every place and any current changes – are they closed for refurb? Did they increase their prices or change their opening hours? Has the bus route changed?

Do you just work for 45-minutes on a sea day?

My talks last 45-minutes on each place – I am available for questions afterwards one-to-one. I am happy to take questions whenever I am out and about on the ship and ashore. I take the view that if I am out of my stateroom, then I am on duty.

If people can’t find me, then a note dropped at Reception reaches me and I reply within one hour of receiving it. I often get letters via Reception where people want to tell me something – maybe a place I mentioned had a special connection for them – I love to hear these stories.

Tell me about your day at sea?

A typical sea day for me looks like waking at 8 to do a rehearsal in my cabin (the steward brings me coffee and food during this time which I consume as I work). Then I shower and dress before heading down to the Explore Ashore desk to make sure I have all the up -to-date information. Arrive in the theatre for 10 to set up and do a tech check – stand at the door to meet and greet – often a question from yesterday’s talk will arise, or one of the lovely stories of a previous visit or a personal connection.

Deliver my talk at 10.30 – set down my equipment and then handle questions – ready for a coffee now! After lunch, I go through tomorrow’s talk and handle any questions that have come through via Reception or my Facebook page.

What makes a good Destination Speaker?

You must love travel, places and people! You need to be willing to spend weeks working on talks for a cruise that lasts just a fraction of that time, and you must accept that a cruise can be withdrawn from you even though you have done the work.

Public speaking skills and confidence are vital. Research must be up to date and thorough.

You need a good camera and the ability to take suitable photographs. Understand how to use PowerPoint (or an equivalent programme) to construct a talk that flows and looks visually appealing, with photos that meet copyright laws.

You need to be politically correct in your language so as not to offend any guests. Whilst I think humour is important, it must never be inappropriate.

Want to know more?

I do a daily Facebook post – usually short and sweet to give a flavour of each day so why not give me Follow? (www.facebook.com/hazeljgriffiths)

I’m always happy to help people pre-cruise, even if I’m not on their cruise.

I have done over 70 cruises this way which equates to more than 560 talks given – to a total audience of more than 100,000.

I haven’t been everywhere yet – but I am working on it!

Disney Adventure to Introduce First-at-Sea Experiences When It Debuts in Singapore

Disney Cruise Line is gearing up for the launch of Disney Adventure, and fans can look forward to an exciting line-up of immersive experiences when the ship debuts in December 2025 – with new features announced this week.

Disney Adventure New Features

Sailing year-round from Singapore, Disney Adventure will be the first Disney cruise ship to be permanently based in Asia.

The ship will offer 3- and 4-night cruises with no port stops, ensuring guests have plenty of time to enjoy the ship’s vast array of entertainment, dining, and character experiences.

Among the biggest highlights on board is the debut of the first-ever Marvel Style Studio at sea, an experience that allows both children and adults to transform into their favourite superheroes with Marvel-inspired hair, makeup, and clothing.

When not in use for style makeovers, the venue will transform into an adults-only lounge with curated beverage tastings, adding another layer of versatility to this brand-new concept.

The ship will also feature Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, the signature enchanted salon that offers magical makeovers for children aged 3-12.

Young guests can dress up as their favourite Disney princesses, knights, or even sea captains, complete with hairstyling, costumes, and accessories. Parents can book private photography sessions to capture the moment.

For a touch of royalty, younger cruisers can also take part in the Royal Society for Friendship and Tea, an elegant tea party hosted by Disney princesses.

This interactive experience blends storytelling, music, and sweet treats, all while celebrating values like kindness, bravery, and determination.

Disney’s Iconic Characters Take Centre Stage

Duffy and Friends will take the spotlight aboard Disney Adventure with an all-new stage show, Duffy and The Friend Ship, featuring Tippy Blue and other beloved characters embarking on a heart-warming sea journey.

For those who love a treasure hunt, Duffy and Friends Quest invites guests to explore the ship in search of missing items using a discovery guide, which leads to a special commemorative gift upon completion.

Another first-at-sea production, Captain Jack Sparrow & The Siren Queen, will bring high-energy adventure to life in the Disney Imagination Garden.

Guests are encouraged to dress in their pirate best as they join the hunt for hidden treasure, battling an ink-squirting giant squid along the way.

Beyond the live entertainment, Disney Adventure will feature themed areas inspired by popular Disney and Pixar films.

San Fransokyo Street, inspired by Big Hero 6, will be a lively onboard district, while Moana-themed Wayfinder Bay offers a peaceful retreat. Families can also make a splash at a Toy Story-themed water play area designed for younger cruisers.

Formerly Global Dream, the 208,000-gross-ton vessel was acquired by Disney Cruise Line in November 2022 and reimagined into Disney Adventure.

Her maiden voyage is set for 15th December 2025, and she will homeport in Singapore for a minimum of five years, marking a major expansion for Disney Cruise Line into the Asian market in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board.

“The uniquely Disney experiences on board will inspire families to reconnect, recharge, and make unforgettable memories that they’ll cherish forever,”

Sharon Siskie, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Cruise Line.

With themed areas, first-ever character experiences, and no shortage of Disney magic, Disney Adventure is set to redefine family cruising in Asia when she takes to the seas in late 2025.

Once the ship is in South Florida, it will sail six-day cruises to the Western Caribbean and eight-night cruises to the Southern Caribbean. Legend of the Seas will also visit Royal Caribbean’s private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Destinations in the Caribbean that the cruise ship will stop at include Aruba, Jamaica and Curacao.

Legend of the Seas is promising to be the best of every vacation, all on one ship.

The cruise line’s Crown & Anchor Society loyalty members can book cruises on Legend of the Seas ahead of the officially opening on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International, gave the following statement:

“On the heels of celebrating one year of the record-breaking Icon Class and the memories made by vacationers of all ages on Icon, we are thrilled to announce the name of Royal Caribbean’s third Icon Class vacation.

Legend of the Seas is the next bold step in this exciting era of vacations and the continuation of the Icon Class legacy, and we look forward to bringing the revolutionary lineup of experiences to more families and adventurers across Europe, the Caribbean and beyond.”

The name Legend of the Seas was first used by Royal Caribbean on their first Vision class ship. It was most traveled cruise ship in Royal Caribbean’s history before leaving the fleet in 2017 after 22 years with the cruise line.

The new Legend of the Seas is currently under construction at a shipyard in Turku, Finland. It will be a sister ship to Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, the largest class of ships in the world.
