From Alaska’s Glaciers to Norwegian Fjords: Unforgettable Cruise Destinations

From Alaska’s Glaciers to Norwegian Fjords: Unforgettable Cruise Destinations

Traveling by sea is an incomparable experience. It’s the epitome of relaxation and enjoyment, filled with captivating sights, tranquil atmospheres, and luxury services; it is a gateway to the extraordinary. Its magic lies in the gentle rocking of the waves, the charm of living at sea, and the exposure to Earth’s marvelous wonders. Among the diverse cruise options, voyages to Alaska’s glaciers and Norwegian fjords are ultimate bucket list items. These destinations stun visitors with their beauty, leaving an indelible print on their memory.

Experience Alaska’s Glaciers

Alaska is often described as the ‘Last Frontier’. Its remote, untouched terrain is both tranquil and visually stunning. Cruising through its majestic glaciers provides a striking sight to behold. Visitors can absorb the power and beauty of these icy giants while listening to the thunderous echo of ‘calving’ – the moment when chunks of ice break off and crash into the sea. Remember to pack warm clothes and binoculars and don’t forget to secure your trip with UHC SafeTrip insurance, which will provide invaluable support in case of any unforeseen incidents.

Alaska’s wildlife, visible from the ship, is another highlight. Sightings of bears, bald eagles, harbor seals, and humpback whales are quite common. The landscapes you see while on board will be unlike any other; snow-capped mountains, vast forests and waterfront villages. For adventure seekers, there are land tours to Denali National Park and trips to sled-dog kennels.

Voyage to Norwegian Fjords

Norway, reminiscent of a fairytale setting, is known for its fjords — narrow deep inlets of sea between high cliffs, shaped by glacial activity. A cruise through its fjords will expose you to skies decorated with the dancing hues of the Northern Lights and an unparalleled view of Scandinavia’s raw wilderness.

Visitors will marvel at this idyllic landscape filled with deep blue waters framed by towering snow-blanketed mountains. Each fjord houses its own unique scenery of quaint villages, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant wildlife. In Flam, for instance, tourists can take a train ride on what’s often called the ‘world’s most beautiful train journey’, and in Bergen, the authentic fish market and the scenic views from Mount Floyen are must-sees.

The unforgettable fjord cruise can further be paired with a journey to the truly unique stops like the Viking-age stave churches found in rural Norway or a brisk hike to Pulpit Rock, an unmatched viewing platform towering 604 meters above Lysefjord.

Travel Tips for a Secure Voyage

Thorough planning and preparation are integral to any trip, especially for cruises where one spends several days or even weeks at sea. Packing should be done with the type of cruise and weather in mind. Travel insurance like UHC SafeTrip insurance, is a prudent step in ensuring protection against potential health scares or unexpected disruptions during your trip.

Integrating elements like guided tours on land further enriches your voyage. They allow you to explore prime attractions of port cities and soak in the local culture. There’s a certain allure to befriending locals and tasting regional cuisines.

Conclusion

A sea voyage through Alaska’s glaciers and Norway’s fjords offers a transcendental experience. The sweeping panoramas, rare wildlife, and captivating cultures encountered on these exquisite cruises provide enough memories to last a lifetime. Embrace the tranquil ambiances, relish the enriching excursions, and make unforgettable memories!

Every day, every shore, every adventure holds something new. It is this constant sense of discovery that transforms a simple journey into an extraordinary experience. From the astounding glaciers of Alaska to the ethereal fjords of Norway, cruising goes beyond visiting; it is about absorbing the mesmerising essence of our beautiful planet.

Guest Pranks Popular Cruise Ambassador & Senior Onboard Crew

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has revealed a light-hearted prank that he fell victim to on a recent cruise.

Carnival Bird Towel Animal

A guest named ‘Trent’ apparently wrote to John to tell him that he’d found an injured bird in his cabin and didn’t know what to do about it.

John reported that the message seemed to be written in a bit of distress as the guest wasn’t able to get help. So, he wrote to senior crew members on the ship including the Housekeeping Manager, the Hotel Director and the Guest Services Manager.

They sent a team to the cabin to investigate and help the guest in question, upon which they did find an ‘injured bird’ – only it was a towel animal.

On his Facebook page, John called Trent a “cheeky sod” and seemed to revel in the bit of fun.

Many guests shared the sentiment, saying that the post had brought a smile to their day.

Some suggested feeding the towel animal some water, since it would “soak it up” and could help with the dehydration.

Not all bird incidents are pranks!

Despite this being a bit of fun, sometimes birds can get into cruise cabins and cause havoc.

Indeed there was a recent incident on a Carnival ship where a whole flock of birds got into a cabin through an open balcony door!

Towel animals

Towel animals have been a beloved tradition on many cruise lines, including Carnival, for decades.

These whimsical creations, made by folding towels into the shapes of various animals, are often left in guests’ cabins by housekeeping staff as a fun surprise.

From elephants to monkeys to swans, towel animals have become an iconic part of the cruise experience, delighting passengers young and old.

While typically a source of smiles and Instagram-worthy moments, it seems this particular towel creation got a bit of extra time in the spotlight – thanks to Trent’s clever prank. Whether perched on a bed or peeking out of a porthole, these towel animals are a small but memorable touch that embodies the playful spirit of cruising.

For guests who want to get in on the fun themselves, some cruise lines may even offer towel-folding workshops, where you can learn the art of crafting these quirky creations to bring a bit of cruise magic home.

Just remember – if your towel bird looks a little under the weather, it might be best to skip the emergency call!

6 Ways To Take Your Dog On A Cruise

So, you want to go on a cruise but can’t bear to leave your furry friend behind?

Well, cruising with dogs isn’t easy, but there are a few ways to take a dog cruising. Here are your options…

A golden retriever wearing a captain's hat is seated on the deck of a cruise ship, with sun loungers and a swimming pool in the foreground and the open sea with other ships in the background. The scene is sunny with a clear blue sky, and an airplane is visible in the distance, suggesting a bustling vacation atmosphere.

1. Book a dog-friendly cruise (yes, they’re real!)

For a long time in this guide, I’ve had to explain that sailing with a dog on a proper ocean cruise hasn’t really been possible, especially if you want your pup in your cabin with you.

But in November 2024, Margaritaville at Sea announced a partnership with Cruise Tails to offer a proper dog-friendly cruise, set to sail in late 2025.

Places are set to be limited – only 250 dog-owners will be able to cruise with their pets, and demand is expected to be extremely high.

As such, it’s going to ballot – if you’re interested, you can sign up from early December 2024 and then the lucky winners will be notified.

Dogs will be permitted in their cabin and special ‘pet butlers’ will help to maintain room hygiene during your cruise (really, it’s probably to make sure it’s maintained at a decent level so it can be easily deep-cleaned once the cruise is finished).

There’s loads to learn about this cruise, so make sure you check out the 15 things you need to know if you’re in any way interested.

2. Choose a cruise ship that allows dogs

If you are hoping to give your canine friend the full-on cruise ship experience, then your options are pretty limited.

Before the launch of the dog-friendly cruises with Margaritaville at Sea, the only ocean cruise ship that would allow you to take your dog on board is the Queen Mary 2. This iconic ocean liner is run by Cunard and will happily host your pet for a transatlantic voyage.

They have even provided a New York fire hydrant and a lamppost from Liverpool so that your dog will feel at home no matter which side of the Atlantic they come from!

On the deck of Cunard's Queen Mary 2, dogs are taking a leisurely stroll, one prominently in the foreground, with a bright red fire hydrant adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. A crew member in a red uniform and pillbox hat walks further back, creating a snapshot of life aboard a luxury liner that caters to canine companions and their owners.

There are other, even more practical features, like 24 kennels and lots of space for your dogs to play. They look after the owners, too, with a dedicated pet owner lounge.

The Queen Mary 2 has regular sailings between Southampton, England and New York, USA. Dogs, cats, and ferrets are allowed on these crossings but not on other sailing routes to places like Norway, the Caribbean, or Bruges. These transatlantic crossings take 7 or 8 days.

Of course, prices vary depending on the length of the cruise and the standard of your accommodation. As a guide, a week’s cruise from Southampton to New York will cost from £749 per person in an inside cabin to £3699 in the best room, the Queens Grill Suites.

Don’t miss the latest Cunard offers…

So, that’s the human prices covered but what about the dog?

Well, the bad news is that they cost about as much as a human. But the good news is that they are cheaper than cats!! (This is because cats need two kennels, one for the animal and one for their litter tray.)

The kennels currently cost £800 or £1000 depending on the size of kennel that you need. You will need to book quite far in advance to ensure that you can get a space for your furry friend.

In return for this fee, your pet will get a cage, bedding, regular feeding, and an exercise area (you can walk them, or the staff will if you are busy elsewhere).

A smiling bellman in a red Cunard uniform stands on the wooden deck of the Queen Mary 2, holding leashes for three dogs: a large black and white spotted dog wearing a jacket, a brown French bulldog, and a golden retriever. The ship's classic design, with white walls and wooden benches, provides a luxurious backdrop for the pet-friendly environment aboard the ocean liner.

If your pet needs a specific type of food, then you will need to provide enough for the entire journey. But they may be able to provide some if your dog isn’t fussy about the brand. If you want to treat them, it’s possible to order them a delicious steak or some chicken from the kitchens!

When you book, you will need to provide all the details about your pet, so if there are any medical conditions, feeding requirements, and dietary restrictions, you let them know upfront.

It’s worth noting that your pet will need to stay inside its kennel or the exercise areas next to it at all times. You can’t take it for walks around the ship or snuggle up with it in your bed!

A curious Labrador retriever leans over a wooden railing on the deck of a cruise ship, gazing directly at the camera with a gentle and attentive expression. The ocean stretches out to the horizon behind the dog, suggesting a serene maritime setting.

You can visit your dog, though, but you will need to stick to the official visiting hours (three times per day). There’s no need to worry about them, as there is a dedicated member of staff (kennel master) on hand to look after all the animals.

Your dog will even be looked after in the case of emergency and they will have their own life jacket and muster points should anything untoward happen.

3. Register your dog as a service dog

If you don’t like the sound of a Margaritaville at Sea cruise or a transatlantic trip on the Queen Mary 2, then your options are pretty limited since no other cruises offer the chance to take a pet with you.

But, there is a chance to take a dog with you on a cruise if it is a service dog and not a pet.

A man in a black shirt introduces a light-colored Labrador Retriever guide dog to my children and husband seated nearby, on a paved area with chairs and tables in the background. The dog attentively receives a treat from the man's hand.

In fact, in the USA, it is the law that service animals have to be allowed to travel with their owners, so all US cruise ships will have to let you take your service dog with you.

This is great if you have a service dog; you can take your pick from all the many and varied cruises that will allow you to take a service dog on board.

But what if you don’t have a service dog? Well, maybe you need one and could get your dog registered as a service dog?

These days, it’s possible to find service dog training online, so it might be worth speaking to someone to discuss your needs and whether your dog could be trained.

A jovial Labrador Retriever with a service dog vest lies on the wooden deck of a cruise ship, a red leash beside it. The dog's friendly demeanor and relaxed posture under the overcast sky create a welcoming atmosphere on the ship's deck.

Anyone who receives assistance from a dog that performs a task directly related to a physical or psychological condition may qualify for a service animal.

Conditions that might be helped by a service dog include visual and hearing impairments, PTSD, diabetes, mobility, seizures, or any physical or psychological disability.

Emotional support dogs that help with anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD and other mental health problems can also be registered as service dogs, although not all are.

If you have a service dog, it will be able to stay with you throughout the cruise, so you will be in charge of feeding, exercising, and taking your dog to the bathroom. Some areas of the ship may be off limits to your dog, but this is mainly areas like pools and spas, you will generally be able to take your dog to restaurants, shows etc.

Different cruise companies have slightly differing policies when it comes to service dogs onboard. Some will ask to see accreditation whilst others don’t.

Read more about how to train your dog to be a service dog.

Cruise Line Service Dog Policies

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean defines a service animal as a dog providing assistance to a person with disabilities. They don’t ask for any proof that your dog is a service dog but say that it may be helpful.

Service dogs are welcome in public areas, including dining spaces, but they don’t supply food or care for service animals. Your service dog isn’t allowed in the pool, and you may need to get documentation to disembark with your dog.

Don’t even try leaving it with a member of staff when you get off the ship. Even if it’s really cute and well-behaved, they won’t look after it! The ship offers small relief areas with mulch.

Carnival

Carnival Cruises only allows working service dogs on their ships; this does not include service dogs in training, other service animals, or emotional support animals. If you take a Carnival cruise, be sure to have all the necessary documentation to hand as you board (not in your luggage) as they will check.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line “accepts service dogs that are trained to perform a specific task. A service dog may be needed for many different conditions, which would be acceptable under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.”

You’ll need to book your dog in at least 2 weeks in advance and will need to provide all documentation including vaccination record (including rabies). You’ll be glad to hear that they provide a relief sandbox for your dog.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Lines permits service animals on board if they are under control and leashed at all times (and can’t be left alone in your room). Like with all the other cruise companies, guests must bring dog food, toys, and other necessities. You need to inform them at least 30 days in advance if you are bringing a service dog.

Disney cruise ships have relief areas for service dogs and the area on the Disney Wish even has its own fire hydrant for dogs to pee on.

"Pluto's Corner," a designated relief area for service dogs on the Disney Wish cruise ship, featuring synthetic grass and a bright red fire hydrant. The clean, white walls and modern design elements, combined with the practical outdoor setting, reflect a thoughtful consideration for the comfort of service animals on board.

It’s worth noting that while policies may vary slightly regarding permitted areas and required documentation, all cruise lines stress the need for advance notification if a service animal is on board. Guests are always responsible for bringing all necessary documentation not only for the ship but also for various ports of call.

Depending on where you are going, you will need to apply in advance for the necessary documents to allow your dog to get off with you when in port. Without this, you will not be able to go ashore with your dog and most likely won’t be able to leave your dog behind on the ship, so you won’t get the chance to explore your destination.

4. Take your dog on a ferry

One of the best ways to have a cruise-like experience with a non-service dog is to take them on a ferry.

Ok, so ferries aren’t the same as cruise ships, and it’s not quite the same experience. Ferries are smaller and lack the pools and entertainment you’ll enjoy on a cruise, but if you want to have your dog with you on a large ship, they are a good option.

A serene dog with a gleaming tan coat and a red collar enjoys a ferry ride, looking out over the blue water from the deck with white and blue railings, as passengers relax nearby. The calm sea and gentle motion of the ferry seem to have a soothing effect on the dog, reflecting a moment of peaceful travel.

Brittany Ferries is one of the best options for dog owners as they have ships with dog-friendly cabins and ferries with kennels (some have both). You can check the availability of kennels and cabins for dogs here.

Stena Line also offers pet-friendly cabins on Liverpool, Holyhead, Fishguard and Cherbourg routes. Unlike Brittany Ferries, Stena does not require dogs to wear a muzzle (unless they’re being aggressive).

Some routes with P&O ferries have dog kennels, and they have plans to introduce dog lounges.

Of course, whichever route you take, you will need to make sure that you have all the necessary documentation which has changed since Brexit.

5. Take a river cruise with your dog

One of the best ways to take your dog on a river cruise is on board the MS Normandie or MS Junker Joerg run by 1AVista Reisen.

The MS Normandie, a river cruise ship, glides gracefully along a calm river with a backdrop of lush green hills. Its white exterior with red and blue accents reflects a classic and elegant design, providing a leisurely cruising experience through scenic landscapes.

They offer dog-friendly cruises along the Rhine and Moselle, which gives you and your four-legged friend the chance to explore ancient castles, vineyards, and medieval villages.

During this cruise, your dog is welcome in common areas like the salon, restaurant, reception, and decks, provided they are on a leash. There is also a dog trainer on board.

Throughout these voyages, the ship docks several times a day, so there is plenty of time to take your dog for walks on land. There’s also a designated pet relief area available on the “Sonnendeck” if your furry friend needs a break between shore visits.

1AVista Reisen is a German company based in Cologne, and the trips are tailored to German speakers.

6. Take a day trip cruise

Day cruises will often allow you to take a dog onboard. Day cruises will generally be in smaller ships without cabins and a more limited range of entertainment.

You may even be able to join specific sailings for dog owners and their dogs like this one in San Diego Bay – dogs go free! Another great option is this river and lake cruise in Chicago.

In the UK, dogs are often welcome on river cruises like the beautiful trips along the River Dart.

A small, fluffy dog with a wind-swept cream coat and a blue bone-shaped tag enjoys a river cruise, with its fur tousled by the breeze and a serene water backdrop under a clear sky. The dog’s bright expression and the gentle waves suggest a delightful day out on the water.

Are small dogs allowed on cruise ships?

Size is not generally a factor when it comes to taking a dog on a cruise. The main criteria is that they must be a service dog to go on any cruise ship other than the transatlantic sailings of the Queen Mary 2 run by Cunard or the newer dog-friendly cruise from Cruise Tails and Margaritaville at Sea.

Having said that, larger dogs may also be banned from that dog-friendly cruise – we’re waiting for more information.

Small dogs are usually only allowed on cruise ships if they are a service dog.

All dogs are allowed to cruise on the Queen Mary 2. Small dogs will probably fit in the slightly cheaper lower kennels, which measure 27″ high, 35 1/2″ deep, and 30″ wide.

The bottom line

So there you have it. If I’m honest, it’s a bit tricky to go on a cruise with your dog unless it is a service animal. It’s not impossible, though, and the introduction of dog-friendly cruises on Margaritaville at Sea might just be the start of a whole new trend!

If you aren’t able to sail from the US, though, then I think your best bet is to look at an overnight ferry trip with a dog-friendly cabin or to take an epic Transatlantic trip on the Queen Mary.

Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Mass Cancellations With Almost 40 Sailings Impacted

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has cancelled 38 voyages scheduled for winter 2025-26, affecting sailings on three of its ships: Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Star, and Norwegian Dawn.

The cancellations impact itineraries across diverse regions, including the Caribbean, South America, Antarctica, Africa, and Arabia.

The cruise line has not provided a reason for the cancellations or announced where the affected ships will be redeployed during the affected period from November 2025 to April 2026.

Guests booked on the cancelled sailings will automatically receive refunds to their original form of payment. Additionally, NCL is offering a 10% Future Cruise Credit as compensation.

With the first cancellations still a year away, passengers have time to make alternative travel arrangements, although the news has disappointed many who were anticipating unique destinations.

All Norwegian Jewel sailings between 23rd November 2025 and 5th April 2026 have been cancelled. These itineraries included:

  • 7-night Caribbean cruises from Tampa, Florida, visiting Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Roatan, Honduras.
  • 14-night extended itineraries with stops in destinations such as Grand Cayman, Aruba, Grenada, Antigua, and St. Thomas.

Following the cancellations, the ship will reposition to Philadelphia, beginning its scheduled programme of 7-night Bermuda and Charleston cruises from 16th April 2026. Later that year, it will operate Canada/New England voyages between Quebec City and Philadelphia.

Norwegian Star voyages from 20th November 2025 to 14th April 2026 have also been axed. The cancellations include:

  • A 14-night repositioning cruise from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, featuring stops in Tenerife, Cape Verde, and various Brazilian ports.
  • Cruises to Antarctica and South America, including a 14-night itinerary combining Antarctica with stops in Argentina and Chile and a 16-night cruise focusing on ports in Argentina and Chile.

The ship’s operations resume with an April 26th repositioning cruise from Lisbon to Southampton, UK. During summer 2026, Norwegian Star will sail Iceland, Norway, and Scotland itineraries from Southampton.

Norwegian Dawn will not operate voyages scheduled between 2nd November 2025 and 12th April 2026. Cancelled sailings include:

  • A 21-night Africa itinerary departing from Barcelona, which was set to visit Casablanca and Agadir, Morocco; Dakar, Senegal; and Walvis Bay, Namibia, among other exotic destinations.

The ship’s schedule resumes with a 7-night Mediterranean cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona on 19th April 2026. From there, Norwegian Dawn will continue its planned Western Mediterranean summer cruises.

Cruise lines cancelling cruises this far out, en masse, usually points to a redeployment.

And Norwegian Cruise Line does have history of changing plans. In November 2023 it cancelled seven months of cruises on Norwegian Sun in one go, a month after cancelling three months of cruises on Norwegian Escape.

Earlier this month, the cruise line also cancelled a highly anticipated cruise between Alaska and Hawaii.

Why do cruise lines redeploy ships?

Cruise ship redeployments, like the cancellations announced by Norwegian Cruise Line, happen for a variety of reasons and are a normal – although relatively uncommon – part of the cruise industry’s operations.

One reason for redeployment is shifting market demand. Cruise lines continuously monitor trends and passenger preferences to determine which regions are most popular or profitable.

If a destination loses appeal or another becomes a hotspot, cruise companies may move ships to ensure they’re offering itineraries that align with customer interest. They’re more likely to sell the cabins that way, even if they need to disappoint guests who had booked already.

Operational challenges can also sometimes play a role in such decisions. Sometimes, external factors like geopolitical tensions, changes in port infrastructure, or even seasonal weather patterns make it difficult to maintain certain routes.

Redeploying ships to other regions allows the cruise line to avoid potential disruptions and provide guests with smoother experiences.

The introduction of new vessels often triggers a domino effect within a fleet. When a new ship enters service, cruise lines may reposition older ships to markets that better match their size and offerings.

For instance, Norwegian Cruise Line’s upcoming Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna could create opportunities to redeploy other ships to different destinations. But normally this is planned in advance, and a ship doesn’t need to have cruises cancelled.

The problem with redeployments, especially when they keep happening, is that cruisers can often abandon any loyalty for their cruise line and start booking with a rival instead.

Carnival Cruise Line Says Goodbye to Charleston, Other Ships to Still Use the Port

After fourteen years, Carnival Cruise Line will no longer sail out of Charleston, South Carolina.   Other cruise lines will still utilize the southern port, but Carnival’s last cruise from the region will take place in a few weeks.

Carnival Sunshine in Charleston with the iconic Ravenel Bridge.

What began with Carnival Fantasy in 2010 will end with the one last Carnival cruise on Carnival Sunshine in the last month of the year.

There are eight more sailings in total for Sunshine out of the port, ranging from a 4-night cruise to a 10-night cruise to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

These are the last sailings for Carnival ships in Charleston:

  • November 23: 5-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • November 28: 4-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • December 2: 10-day cruise to Eastern Caribbean
  • December 12: 4-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • December 16: 5-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • December 21: 5-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • December 26: 4-day cruise to The Bahamas
  • December 30: 5-day cruise to The Bahamas

The December 30, 2024 sailing is a 5-night cruise that will mark the end of an era for the South Carolina cruise port.   This cruise will return to Charleston on January 5, 2025.

Some residents of Charleston have been trying for years to get rid of Carnival and cruise ships in general.  Traffic issues have plagued the city on embarkation days and environmental concerns were also at the forefront of discussions.

In 2022 it was announced that the cruise line’s contract with the port city would not be renewed.

Other efforts to move the cruise port just across the bay to Mount Pleasant were also shot down in recent town council meetings.

Other cruise lines in Charleston

While Carnival will no longer have a presence in Charleston, the port will still be used be a few other cruise lines as a port of call.

In addition to American Cruise Line utilizing the port for stops on its smaller 100-passenger vessels, Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas will be stopping at the port several times in 2025 and 2026.

Viking’s 30,150 gross ton expedition ships will also call on the port next year, and Oceania Vista is scheduled to visit Charleston in April of 2025 with its 1,200 passengers.

Its location on the southeast coast makes Charleston a convenient stop for ships sailing from the northern states to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Azamara and Virgin Voyages will also stop at the port in October and Norwegian Jewel and Seven Seas Grandeur will be calling on the port in April of 2026.

Norwegian Jewel is scheduled to make several Charleston stops in 2026 during the peak season of April through September.

Carnival Sunshine’s Future

Where will Carnival Sunshine go after ceasing operations in Charleston?

On February 11, 2025, the ship will begin sailing out of Norfolk, Virginia.   From Norfolk the vessel will offer 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-day sailings to The Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda.

Sunshine is currently scheduled to remain in its Norfolk homeport until April of 2027.

The vessel has been in service since 1996 when it was called Carnival Destiny.  The renaming of the ship took place in 2013.   The 102,853 gross ton ship has a passenger-capacity of 2,642 and is the oldest of three Sunshine-class vessels, the others being Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Radiance.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Topless Sunbathing on Cruise Ships

Topless sunbathing on cruise ships is a topic that always divides opinion.

While some cruisers (like me) welcome an opportunity to tan the boobies, there are others who are horrified at the idea. Like this person, who messaged Carnival ambassdor John Heald to check…

Topless sunbathing is allowed on several cruise ships. But – (and this is a big but) – there are some key rules you have to follow.

So, whether you’re keen to work on that tan line-free holiday glow or just curious about what’s allowed, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about topless sunbathing at sea.

Do: Choose A Cruise Line That Allows Topless Sunbathing

Most North American cruise lines have become quite conservative about topless sunbathing in recent years. It’s quite different from how things used to be. In the past, many cruise ships, including Carnival, had designated sundecks for this very purpose, but not any more.

These days, the big names like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line have strict policies that state that women must keep their tops on at all times in public.

Men, of course, are free to go topless by the pool. Even though some of them have larger chests than many women. Unfair? Maybe.

Norwegian Cruise Line makes it crystal clear in their guest conduct policy that topless sunbathing isn’t allowed.

DISCOURTEOUS OR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIORPool, deck and theatre chairs may not be reserved. Topless sunbathing is not permitted. Boom boxes or loud radios are not permitted. Roller blades, roller skates, skateboards, scooters, surfboards, bicycles, and similar items may not be utilised on-board; except for mobility aids related to special needs, as approved by the ship's management.

And while Carnival doesn’t explicitly ban it in their policies, they expect guests to wear “respectful attire” throughout the ship.

John Heald has confirmed that while Carnival ships used to have topless sunbathing over 20 years ago, it has since been banned, alongside other retro activities like skeet shooting.

But it’s not all disappointing news! If you’re keen on topless sunbathing, there are still some options…

1. Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s cruise line Virgin Voyages has been quite revolutionary since launching in 2020. They’ve got a special area called “The Perch” on Deck 17 where you can comfortably sunbathe topless.

2. Costa Cruises

Italian cruise line Costa Cruises permits opless sunbathing on their top decks, by the pool, and on cabin balconies, embracing a European-style sunbathing approach.

3. AIDA Cruises

This German cruise line offers a sun deck dedicated exclusively to topless sunbathing on nearly all its ships.

4. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Another German cruise line, Hapag-LLoyd features a designated area for topless sunbathing on its Europa ship.

5. Cunard

British cruise line Cunard allows ladies to go topless but not by the pool, only on your own balcony. This is very much in line with the opinions of many British women who wouldn’t go topless at the beach in the UK, but would happily do it in their own back garden!

Cruise Mummy in an orange top gives a thumbs-up while sitting on the deck of the Cunard Queen Mary cruise ship. Behind her, an orange lifeboat is visible, along with some outdoor seating and railings. She appears to be enjoying her time on the ship.

Do: Choose The Right Spot

As you can see from the policies above, topless sunbathing is only allowed in certain areas, and those depends on which ship youre on.

Virgin Voyages has made it really easy with “The Perch” on Deck 17 – it’s a lovely dedicated space where you can feel completely at ease.

On the whole, the best place to whip off your top and work on your tan is on a high deck away from the main pools. You’ll certainly want to be fully clothed when inside the ship, and that includes a cover-up over your bikini.

Do: Consider Your Itinerary

It’s worth noting that acceptable practices can vary depending on where you’re cruising. European routes tend to be more relaxed about topless sunbathing – I’ve noticed it’s particularly common in Mediterranean itineraries. But if you’re sailing from North America, you might find stricter policies in place.

Remember, if you’re not sure about anything, it’s better to ask than assume.

Don’t: Forget The Sunscreen

If you plan on baring your boobs, don’t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen! Those upper decks can get quite sunny and with the coiol breeze you may not feel yourself burning. Be sure to protect any areas that aren’t usually exposed to the sun.

Don’t: Be Topless In Family Areas

I can’t stress this enough – even if you’re on a cruise line that allows topless sunbathing, you’ll want to avoid the main pool areas and family zones completely!

If your ships has an adults only area, as most do, then make use of it.

Don’t: Take Photos Of People

Taking photos in topless sunbathing is a complete no-no. It’s about respecting everyone’s privacy and comfort. Even if you’re just trying to get a selfie, it’s best to keep your camera tucked away while in these areas.

Remember, breaking these rules could lead to a chat with ship security or, in extreme cases, being asked to leave at the next port. It’s always better to play it safe and follow the ship’s guidelines!

Do: Consider Local Regulations

Ships may adjust their policies when they’re docked in certain ports of call. For instance, some Middle Eastern and Asian countries have quite strict modesty laws that ships must respect.

So while sunbathing topless on your balcony may be okay while the ship is at sea, there’s a good chance that it may not be once your ship is docked.

Do: Research Nude and Topless Beaches

Depending on your itinerary, you may spend more time sunbathing topless on the beach than you do on your ship. Most beaches in the Mediterranean allow topless sunbathing. On some beaches you’ll find that the majority of women opt to be naked from the waist up.

In the Caribbean, there are fewer options. But Cozumel does have some topless beaches that are worth a visit.

Do: Consider A Nude Cruise

Clothing-optional cruises have surged in popularity in recent years and there are lots of itineraries to choose from. It’s worth researching these carefully as they are quite diverse, with some offering a relaxed experience for those who prefer the comfort of being textile-free and others offering a much more risque experience.

It all comes down to culture

Researching this article has really highlighted how the differences in cruise line policies regarding topless sunbathing are influenced by the local cultures of where the ships are based.

I recently took a cruise with the German river cruise line A-Rosa and as I walked into the ‘family-friendly’ spa (where kids are allowed), I was taken aback by how every single guest, men and women alike, were fully-nude.

As a British person, I found this to be a little unsettling and I felt a little uncomfortable being the only person in swimwear. Especially in the hot tub! But for Germans, it’s totally normal.

At the other end of the nudity spectrum, I also find it difficult to empathise with someone who is worried that their teenage sons may see a pair of breasts. Surely, they have seen them before? Maybe not.

At the end of the day, all that matters is that you are comfortable, and that the people around you are comfortable. Be sure to do your research about the rules before whipping off your top and everyone wil be happy.
