Common Challenges And Mishaps That Can Happen On Cruise Vacations

Cruise vacations are often seen as the ultimate getaway, offering relaxation, adventure, and a chance to explore multiple destinations in one trip. However, despite the allure of smooth sailing, numerous challenges and mishaps can arise during these voyages.

From unexpected weather to onboard health issues, understanding these potential pitfalls can help travelers prepare better and enjoy their cruise experience to the fullest.

Accidents and Personal Injuries

Mishaps such as slips, falls, or injuries from activities—whether on the pool deck, in the gym, or during organized events—can occur unexpectedly.

For example, the tragic incident aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas highlights the severity of such risks. In January 2024, 36-year-old Jonathan Mindrum of Chicago passed away shortly before the ship was set to dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Eyewitnesses suggested that there were multiple similar medical alerts during the voyage. Mindrum’s death was one of several tragic incidents on Atlantis Events chartered cruises in recent years.

Passengers should always be aware of safety measures, such as knowing the location of emergency exits and being mindful of physical activity limits. In cases of serious accidents or injuries, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention from onboard staff.

In the above incident, families may consider consulting an attorney. A personal injury lawyer in Chicago can help them understand their legal rights and pursue potential claims for negligence or wrongful death.

TorHoerman Law notes that legal professionals can offer valuable assistance in uncovering the truth and navigating the claims process. You might be entitled to compensation if you or someone you know has suffered harm or monetary loss because of another person’s carelessness.

What are the legal rights of passengers in case of an accident on a cruise?

Passengers involved in a cruise accident have the right to seek compensation for injuries caused by negligence, unsafe conditions, or insufficient safety measures. They can file claims for medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help navigate the legal process and ensure fair compensation.

Common Health Issues Onboard

Health concerns are common during cruise vacations due to the close quarters, which can facilitate the spread of illnesses like norovirus and influenza. Passengers are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks, which may result in quarantines or restricted activities.

To reduce the risk of illness, travelers should practice good hygiene, regularly washing hands and using hand sanitizers. Staying informed about any health advisories from the cruise line can help passengers stay updated on potential outbreaks. Additionally, it’s crucial to familiarize oneself with onboard medical facilities in case of emergencies.

The CDC reports that between 2006 and 2019, approximately 127 million passengers traveled aboard 252 cruise ships under the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP). The analysis revealed a correlation between ship size, voyage length, and the risk of acute gastrointestinal illness (AGE).

While the overall rate of AGE cases on cruise ships declined during this period, larger ships and voyages saw higher illness rates among passengers. Similarly, crew members experienced increased illness rates on larger vessels and during trips lasting over five days.

How effective are onboard medical facilities in treating illnesses?

Onboard medical facilities can provide essential care for common illnesses and injuries, with staff trained to handle emergencies. However, they are limited in scope compared to land-based hospitals. Serious medical conditions may require evacuation to a medical facility ashore for more advanced treatment and specialized care.

Unexpected Weather Conditions

Weather can significantly disrupt cruise plans, impacting itineraries and passenger experiences. Storms, rough seas, and extreme temperatures may lead to changes or cancellations of planned excursions.

A recent incident reported by Fox Business highlights this issue. Royal Caribbean cruise guests experienced severe weather near Tenerife, Spain, on November 7. Passengers described feeling the ship tilt at what one traveler likened to a “45-degree angle.”

This tumultuous weather resulted in one guest sustaining injuries that required medical attention, prompting the ship to divert for disembarkation.

To prepare for unexpected weather conditions, travelers should take certain precautions. First, regularly check weather forecasts before and during the cruise to stay informed about potential disruptions.

Packing clothing suited for a range of weather conditions ensures comfort no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Finally, maintaining flexibility helps passengers adapt to any changes in itinerary, making the cruise experience more enjoyable, even when the weather is unpredictable.

Lost Luggage and Travel Delays

Traveling to a cruise port often involves flights or other forms of transportation, which can lead to lost luggage or travel delays.

For example, Lindsey Hargesheimer, a photographer, shared her experience on TikTok after Celebrity Cruises lost her bag during a cruise from Amsterdam. She realized her luggage was missing when her family received theirs, but hers was nowhere to be found.

She eventually received a call from the Amsterdam port authorities, who had fished her bag out of the canal.

To minimize such risks, travelers should arrive at least a day before departure to resolve any potential travel issues. Utilizing luggage tracking technology offered by many airlines can provide peace of mind. Additionally, packing essentials like medications, toiletries, and a change of clothes ensures travelers have what they need if their checked bags are delayed.

What essential items should be packed in carry-on luggage for a cruise?

Essential items to pack in carry-on luggage for a cruise include medications and toiletries. Also, include a change of clothes, important documents, chargers, valuables, swimwear, sunscreen, and any personal items needed for the first day. This ensures comfort and preparedness in case of luggage delays.

Cabin Issues on Cruises

Cabin-related issues are not uncommon on cruises. Problems such as noisy neighbors, malfunctioning air conditioning, or plumbing issues can detract from the enjoyment of your vacation. To address these concerns:

  • Communicate with staff: If problems arise, promptly inform the cabin steward or guest services for assistance.
  • Choose cabins wisely: Research cabin locations before booking; midship cabins tend to be more stable in rough seas and quieter than those near entertainment venues.
  • Consider upgrades: If budget allows, upgrading to a higher category cabin may provide better amenities and comfort.

Enhance Your Safety on the Cruise

Although cruising is generally safe, various incidents can raise safety concerns among passengers, including accidents during excursions or onboard emergencies. To enhance safety during your cruise, it is essential to take proactive measures.

First, attend all mandatory safety drills; these sessions familiarize you with emergency procedures and evacuation routes. Second, exercise caution during off-ship excursions by selecting reputable tour providers and adhering to all safety guidelines provided by the cruise line.

Finally, remain aware of your surroundings both onboard and during excursions. Being vigilant can help you identify potential risks and avoid unsafe situations.

Cruise vacations offer unique experiences filled with opportunities for relaxation and adventure; however, they are not without their challenges and mishaps. By being aware of potential issues, travelers can take proactive steps to mitigate these challenges.

Preparation is key—by planning ahead and maintaining flexibility during your journey, you can enhance your overall cruise experience and create lasting memories.

Modern Family Actor Chosen As Godfather Of New NCL Cruise Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has announced that award-winning American actor Eric Stonestreet will serve as godfather to its newest ship, Norwegian Aqua.

Stonestreet, best known for his role as Cameron Tucker in the hit TV series Modern Family, will officially christen Norwegian Aqua at a ceremony in PortMiami on 13th April 2025.

The 156,300-gross-ton ship is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, with sea trials and final touches still to come.

“We are very excited to officially welcome Eric Stonestreet to the NCL team!

“Eric’s authenticity, wit, charm and genuine desire to bring happiness to the masses embodies the role of godfather for Norwegian Aqua, as well as who we are and what we stand for as a company. We are honoured to have Eric as the godfather of Norwegian Aqua.”

David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

The actor expressed his excitement about the role and the ship’s innovative features.

“I am blown away by what’s in store for Norwegian Aqua, and I cannot wait to take a ride on the Aqua Slidecoaster, indulge in some red curry at the all-new Sukhothai, and most importantly create lifelong memories with my own family while on board this innovative new ship,”

Eric Stonestreet

Norwegian Aqua: Innovation Meets Luxury

Norwegian Aqua is designed to redefine cruising with several firsts for NCL, including the Aqua Slidecoaster, a thrilling combination rollercoaster and waterslide.

The ship will also feature Glow Court, a new sports complex, and the Aqua Game Zone, offering interactive and family-friendly entertainment.

The ship will introduce exciting dining options, including Sukhothai, a Thai specialty restaurant serving traditional and contemporary dishes like Salt and Pepper Prawns and Thai Grilled Steak Salad.

Another debut is Planterie, a vegan and vegetarian-focused eatery located in the Indulge Food Hall, offering dishes such as the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl.

Luxury accommodations on Norwegian Aqua will include three-bedroom duplex suites within The Haven by Norwegian. This exclusive area offers a private sundeck, infinity pool, lounge, and bar, catering to guests seeking the ultimate in privacy and indulgence.

Following her christening, Norwegian Aqua will homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida, for her maiden season.

She will offer 7-day Caribbean itineraries to destinations such as Puerto Plata, Tortola, St. Thomas, and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island.

In late 2025, the ship will sail from New York to Bermuda before relocating to PortMiami for Caribbean voyages.

Norwegian Luna, the second Prima Plus-class ship, is slated for delivery in April 2026, continuing NCL’s expansion of its innovative fleet.

NCL’s Newest Cruise Ship Will Have 2 Features No Ship Has Ever Had Before

When Norwegian Cruise Line’s next new ship debuts in 2025, it will have two features that no cruise ship has ever had before.

Norwegian Aqua cruise ship

Norwegian Aqua will debut in April 2025 with new experiences for cruisers.

One of those features will be the very first cruise ship hybrid waterslide and rollercoaster. The Aqua Slidecoaster will also be the longest and fastest slide at sea.

It will have dual slides and a magnetic lift that propels adventurous guests through two different courses.

The second new feature that Norwegian Aqua is bringing to the cruise industry will be located in the ship’s thermal suite. Norwegian is known for their Mandara Spa and this ship will be no different.

Norwegian Aqua will have the first clay sauna at sea, an invigorating spa service that revitalizes the skin through detoxifying cleansing and gentle exfoliation.

The thermal suite will also have double the normal amount of heated loungers along with familiar favorites like the charcoal sauna, ice room, salt room, and the flotation salt pool.

Norwegian announced today that two-time Emmy-Award winning actor Eric Stonestreet will serve as Norwegian Aqua’s godfather during a naming ceremony that will take place next year.

David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, gave the following statement about Eric Stonestreet naming the ship:

“We are very excited to officially welcome Eric Stonestreet to the NCL team!. We had an amazing time with Eric on one of our ships, and also got to spend some time with his charming family after. Over the past couple of months, Eric has become a true friend of NCL.

“Eric’s authenticity, wit, charm and genuine desire to bring happiness to the masses embodies the role of godfather for Norwegian Aqua, as well as who we are and what we stand for as a company. We are honored to have Eric as the godfather of Norwegian Aqua!”

Norwegian Aqua will be the first Prima Plus class ship from Norwegian Cruise Line and come in at 156,300 gross tons in size. It will be 1,056 feet long and carry 3,571 guests at double occupancy.

The cruise ship will begin sailing from Port Canaveral on April 26, 2025, a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Aqua will also offer cruises from New York and Miami during the vessel’s first year in service.

Carnival Finally Bans Electronic Device After Passenger Misuse

Every cruise line has a list of banned items.  While Royal Caribbean has banned things like multi-plug adapters that are not USB, Carnival still allows them—at least for now.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

The cruise line has also allowed a certain item that other cruise lines have banned.   But because of passenger misuse, Carnival is adding a few more electronic items to its ban list.

Carnival cruise ships in Costa Maya port

When you’re on a cruise ship, you are essentially sharing your vacation with thousands of other people.  And while modern mega ships offer large venues and plenty of space for everyone, certain activities by other passengers can really put a damper on that much needed getaway.

One area of complaint for Carnival cruise ships lately has been noise pollution.  The cruise line has stated for years that portable Bluetooth speakers were allowed on their ships but only for private use in cabins.

But with some passengers playing music loudly from balconies or even on the pool deck as the music competed with the cruise ship’s own DJ, Carnival is now banning Bluetooth speakers and other audio devices that could interrupt other passengers.

“Boomboxes, radios and all types of speakers (including bluetooth, portable and wireless),” are no longer allowed on Carnival cruise ships.

Brand Ambassador John Heald often takes to his Facebook page to answer questions from Carnival fans.

Among the most common complaints is the misuse of these Bluetooth speakers.  Some have complained of the “Serenity” adult-only retreat being not so much of a retreat as other passengers played loud music.

And while use of these speakers on private balconies was previously allowed, as any veteran cruisers will tell you, the sound from neighboring balconies easily spills over into any nearby stateroom.

On one recent cruise I saw a cruise passenger carrying a large boombox on his shoulders.  The music was louder than the ship’s music.  Some people complained but the staff were unsure how to handle the situation.

And this can be a safety concern.

Cruise lines have stated that one reason for banning these devices is due to passengers not being able to hear important announcements over the loudspeaker.

When the ship is playing music on the pool deck, they will cut off the music if an important message needs to be delivered.

But the biggest annoyance is just the extra noise these Bluetooth speakers add to a ship.   The music will clash with other music playing and can make for the very opposite of a relaxing environment.

15 Things You Need To Know About The New Dog-Friendly Cruises

The dream of taking your dog on a cruise is finally becoming a reality as the fun American cruise line, Margaritaville At Sea, is partnering with new company, Cruise Tails, to offer pet-friendly cruises.

Dog-Friendly Cruise

With 250 lucky dogs (and their humans!) invited aboard, this is your chance to create memories that’ll have tails wagging long after you disembark.

But, there are some caveats. Here’s everything you need to know before you and your furry friend set sail…

1. Your chance of getting a place is limited

With around 90 million pet dogs in the United States, and only space for 250 dogs on board, demand for the cruises is set to be huge.

You can’t just book a cabin for yourself and your dog. Instead, you’ll need to fill in an application form and hope that you’re chosen to be one of the lucky families that gets to set sail.

2. Group applications get priority

Margaritaville At Sea’s ship, Islander, has 1,100 staterooms. The hard limit of 250 dogs means that most staterooms won’t actaully have dogs inside.

To deal with this, Cruise Tails is giving priority to groups who book two or more cabins with only one dog. So if you want to bring a single dog and four or more humans, you’re much more likley to get a place on board.

3. Every dog gets a private bathroom

Each pet-friendly cabin is thoughtfully designed with your dog’s comfort in mind. One standout feature is the private relief station conveniently located on every balcony.

Balcony stateroom on Islander

These stations are equipped with materials that make cleanup a breeze, ensuring a clean and hassle-free experience. You can relax knowing that in the early morning or late at night, your furry friend can take care of business without the need to trek across the ship.

4. Dogs won’t be allowed in dining rooms

It’s expected that health regulations require that dogs won’t be allowed in any of the places where humans eat meals. What that also means is that dogs will probably be required to be left in cabins for at least some part of the day. Of course, room service is also available.

Islander dining room

5. Cruisers will be featured on social media

If you’re camera shy or in a witness protection program, this isn’t the cruise for you! All guests will be asked to sign a waiver which allows any photos of them and their dogs to be used on social media and other marketing channels.

You may also be expected to share your own photos. According to the Cruise Tails website, Guests may also be asked to try out pet products and post about them online as part of the deal.

A small, fluffy dog with a wind-swept cream coat and a blue bone-shaped tag enjoys a river cruise, with its fur tousled by the breeze and a serene water backdrop under a clear sky. The dog’s bright expression and the gentle waves suggest a delightful day out on the water.

6. There’s a packed schedule of activities

This cruise is packed with activities designed to keep tails wagging and spirits high!

From dazzling costume contests where your pup can strut their stuff in style to entertaining dog shows that highlight the unique talents of canine cruisers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

For those looking to learn, expert-led dog training seminars will offer valuable tips and tricks, making this not just a vacation but a bonding and learning experience for you and your pooch.

There are even rumours of an 80s night and a formal night, for both humans and dogs. So you’d better start shopping for outfits.

evening dresses

7. Not all dog breeds will be allowed

Cruise Tails hasn’t yet released information about which dogs specifically will be banned from the ship, but it’s expected that not all breeds will be welcomed.

Margaritaville already allows dogs at several of its land-based resorts in the United States. However, depending on the resort their are weight limites for dogs which vary between 30lbs and 100lbs.

It’s not yet known if Margaritaville At Sea will have size or weight limits for dogs. But 30lb is only the size of a French Bulldog, so this could limit a lot of dogs from applying.

A curious Labrador retriever leans over a wooden railing on the deck of a cruise ship, gazing directly at the camera with a gentle and attentive expression. The ocean stretches out to the horizon behind the dog, suggesting a serene maritime setting.

It’s expected that breeds such as Boxers, Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Akitas, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Mastiffs, Malamutes, Great Danes, Cane Corso, Chow Chows, Huskies and Wolf Hybrids may also not be allowed.

8. Dogs must remain on a leash

For everyone’s safety and comfort, all dogs must remain leashed while exploring the ship. This ensures that all canine guests can enjoy the cruise without any unexpected encounters or mishaps.

Of course, you can let your dog off the leash inside your cabin, but when strolling on the deck, visiting designated play areas, or heading to one of the many fun activities, a leash will ensures that your pet stays under control and everyone aboard has a stress-free experience.

9. Vaccinations are mandatory

You may be surprised to learn that most dog owners don’t keep up to date with their pets vaccinations. However, vaccinations will be required for dogs to board. These will likely include the core vaccines such as rabies, distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus. However, others may be required too.

There could also be a requirement for dogs to be up to date with worming and flea-prevention treatments. Fleas can be notiriously tricky to eradicate from carpets and furniture so the cruise line will almost certainly want protocols in place to keep them off the ship.

10. Dogs can’t go anywhere near the pool

While the idea of swimming with your dog may sound fun, it just wouldn’t be practical. The fur would likely clog the filter, and it wouldn’t take long for the pool to change colour from blue to something less enticing!

The pool on Margaritaville At Sea Islander

For hygiene reasons, dogs won’t be allowed on the pool deck at all. And they certainly won’t be allowed down the waterslide! If you want to enjoy a swim, you’ll be expected to leave your dog in the cabin or with a family member elsewhere on the ship.

However, there will be dog-friendly splash sessions that will allow your dog to cool off when they need to.

11. Two dates are planned for the cruise

The first cruise is set to depart in November 2025. If that is successful, then Cruise Tails hopes to organise a second dog-friendly cruise around March to May 2026.

There’s also a chance that the second cruise may be open to more than 250 dogs. So if your application isn’t successful the first time around, it’s definitely worth trying again.

Islander

12. The cruise will sail from Tampa, Florida

It’s not yet been announced where the cruise will set sail to or how long it will be. Looking at the itineraries for November 2025, we can see that Islander is sceduled to make 4- to 7-night round-trips from Tampa, Florida.

Restrictions may prevent dogs from disembarking the ship outside of the USA. However, the ship could potentially call at Key West, offering families the chance to visit one of the many dog-friendly beaches together.

Key West

13. There will be a vet onboard

The Islander will have a vet onboard as well as a doctor, so whether you or your dog needs medical attention, you don’t need to worry.

14. Service dogs are not allowed

Registered service dogs are already allowed on most cruise ships and so this cruise is only open to pet dogs, giving them a chance to have an experience that they wouldn’t usually be allowed to have.

service dog

15. Jobs are available for dog lovers

Do you love dogs? Perhaps you could work on the ship. Cruise Tails has said that they’re recruiting for dog walkers, groomers and even doggy butlers! You can join the mailing list to keep updated about any opportunities.

Cunard dog butler

Are you excited for this cruise?

I love the idea of a dog-friendly cruise and would love nothing more than to cruise with my two dogs, Ernie and JoJo. However, as I live in the UK, the logistics of getting the dogs to Florida may prove a little too tricky for me.

But if you apply for a place then I’m crossing my fingers for you! Plenty of people hate the idea of a cruise with dogs. But as I always say, there’s a cruise for everyone. If this one isn’t for you, then there are plenty more that will be.

I’ll keep this article updated as more info is released, but if you have any comments or questions, please let us know below.

Carnival Quietly Bans Bluetooth Speakers Across The Fleet

Carnival Cruise Line has officially banned all types of speakers and radios onboard its ships, citing safety concerns.

Carnival Bans Bluetooth Speakers

The policy, which applies to Bluetooth, portable, and wireless speakers, aims to ensure that public announcements can be clearly heard by both guests and crew, particularly in emergencies.

While safety has been named as the primary reason, there’s also a good chance that guest complaints contributed to the cruise – as some would use their speaker onboard to play their own music, regardless of others’ tastes.

The updated rule is now listed under the “Prohibited Items Policies” on Carnival’s website, which reads “All speakers (including Bluetooth, portable, and wireless types) and radios are prohibited and will be held and returned at the end of the cruise. For safety reasons, public announcements must be heard by all guests and crew,”.

The cruise line hasn’t made an announcement regarding the ban, but it’s definitely a recent addition to the policy – the wording around speakers and radios didn’t exist in the website’s policy in October 2024.

Reports from passengers indicate that the confiscation of speakers has already begun. One traveller claimed that over 100 devices were collected from luggage during a recent voyage, though it’s not clear how they found this out.

Already, the move to ban speakers has split opinion with guests.

Some are unhappy because they feel they were able to use their speakers responsibly, either in their cabin while getting ready or when visiting the beach.

Others have applauded the change, saying that too many guests are inconsiderate of others and play music that’s too loud, or that’s inappropriate.

“We want people to please use headphones and also, it is important that if people were using Bluetooth speakers to play their own music, that music may not be appropriate.”

11 Reasons People Are Hating On The New Dog-Friendly Cruise

The announcement of a new dog-friendly cruise has sparked much controversy among cruise enthusiasts.

Annoyed woman and Margaritaville cruise ship

While some pet parents (like me!) are thrilled about the idea of bringing their furry friends aboard, others aren’t so convinced. Some people on Facebook have been very upset at the mere suggestion that dogs be allowed to cruise.

What’s the worst that can happen? Well, here are the top concerns that cruisers have about this new concept…

1. Hygiene Nightmares

One of the biggest complaints about hygience. Critics worry about dog wee, poo and hair turning the cruise into an unsanitary experience. The thought of fleas joining the trip doesn’t help either.

And yes, I guess that’s a tricky issue that the cruise line, Margaritaville At Sea, will have to come up with a solution for. Dogs can be messy. And so we can expect that extra cleaning will almost certainly be required. As well as proper toilet areas for the dogs.

dog toilet on Disney dream

2. Non-Stop Barking

Imagine relaxing by the pool only to have a chorus of barking dogs interrupt the peace. Many fear constant noise from barking, whining, or dogs fighting will ruin the tranquil cruise vibe.

With around 250 dogs expected to board the cruise, I don’t expect that it will be a quiet affair. Of course, not all dogs bark. But those that do are much more likely to do it when there are lots of other dogs around to start it off.

Yes, dogs can be noisy. But then so can babies. And they’re allowed to cruise.

3. Poop Patrol Problems

Who’s cleaning up the mess? Some believe pet owners won’t always ensure their dogs use the designated toilet areas, leaving the crew to deal with the aftermath. This would add extra work for staff and discomfort for passengers.

I can see this being an issue that will need to be carefully planned. Most cruise ships have special dog relief areas where service dogs can do their business. But these are only designed for a handful of dogs at most. More will certainly be needed.

"Pluto's Corner," a designated relief area for service dogs on the Disney Wish cruise ship, featuring synthetic grass and a bright red fire hydrant. The clean, white walls and modern design elements, combined with the practical outdoor setting, reflect a thoughtful consideration for the comfort of service animals on board.

And what about the pool deck? Technically that’s outside. I can see some dogs being confused about whether they’re allowed to poo there. And nobody wants to see a poo on the edge of the pool, right?

4. Overboard Anxiety

Dogs and open water can be a dangerous mix. Many are worried about the possibility of pets jumping overboard out of curiosity.

It’s true that some dogs love water, and will do anything for a swim. But cruise railings are pretty high, so most dogs wouldn’t be able to jump over, you would hope?

people standing by cruise ship railings

I think that dogs jumping in the pool is more likely. And I assume that swimming won’t be allowed!

5. Allergies and Phobias

For passengers with dog allergies, sharing spaces with pets could make the cruise unbearable. Those with a fear of dogs feel equally excluded, questioning why they should give up their dog-free vacation.

Here’s where I think that people are over-reacting. The dog-friendly cruises will be selected itineraries only. Nobody is suggesting that anyone who can’t be around dogs for whatever reaspn should book one of these trips.

I have a cat allergy and I simply wouldn’t be able to breathe on a cat-friendly cruise. But then I would never book one!

Cat on a Cunard cruise

6. Stressful for Dogs

It’s not just humans who could struggle. Critics point out that the loud noises, unfamiliar surroundings, and motion of the ship could cause significant stress for dogs, especially those not used to travel.

At the end of the day, it comes down to each pet owner to know their animal and decide what’s best for them. Just as you wouldn’t take a dogs that hates travelling on a long road trip, you would think that people know if their dog is comfortable in unfamilair places before they book the cruise.

7. Cabin Chaos

What happens when owners head off for an excursion? Critics predict unattended dogs left in cabins could bark non-stop or damage furniture, leaving behind unpleasant surprises for the next guests.

However, I don’t think this will be a problem. Margaritaville At Sea is known for short cruises, and so I expect that there won’t be ports of call on the dog cruises. Or if they are, they may be ports within the US so that humans and dogs can disembark together for walkies.

Margaritaville At Sea

8. Poorly Trained Pets

Not all dogs are well-behaved, and some passengers worry about encountering untrained or unsocialised pets. Aggression, anxiety, and accidents could quickly create chaos on board.

You could say the same about humans though, right? You only have to look at the number of brawls on cruise ships to see that when all-inclusive drinks are involved, people can be way worse than animals.

Carnival Paradise Brawl

9. Limited Options for Non-Dog Lovers

Some passengers argue that cruises should cater to everyone, and dog-friendly ships might alienate those who prefer a pet-free environment. If these cruises gain popularity, they fear fewer options for dog-free getaways.

There are over 300 cruise ships to choose from in 2024. Aside from Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, where dogs are kept in cages, Margaritaville At Sea is the only cruise line so far to offer pet-friendly cruises.

So don’t worry – there will still be lots of opportunities for people to cruise without dogs too! Although we can’t guarantee that there will be no service dogs onboard those ships.

10. Logistical Headaches

From creating potty areas on every deck to ensuring there’s a vet onboard, the logistics of accommodating dozens of dogs seem overwhelming for some. Cruisers seem sceptical about whether cruise lines can pull it off successfully.

Only time will tell on that one. As much are there are people who hate the idea, there are plenty more people who love it. They’re lining up to buy tickets, and it’s sure to be popular!

dog on a cruise

11. A Blow to the Cruise Experience

For traditional cruisers, this concept feels like a departure from the luxury they expect. With dogs onboard, some worry the atmosphere will feel more chaotic and less relaxing. As one person bluntly put it, “Keep the dogs at home!”

This all comes down to personal preferences. Remember, there’s a cruise line for everyone. If you expect ‘luxury’, then a Margaritaville At Sea cruise probably isn’t for you anyway.

My Opinion

It’s clear that not everyone is onboard with the concept of dog-friendly cruises. The model has its challenges, and there are plenty of concerns about hygiene, noise and safety.

However, as a dog-lover, I’m very excited by this idea. My dogs are well-behaved and love to travel so I’m sure they’d fit right in on a dog-friendly cruise.

Ernie and Jojo
My two doggies

The only challenge for me would be getting them to the United States where it’s expected that these Margaritaville At Sea cruises will depart from. But if we can solve that issue, or a cruise ship departs from the UK with a similar offering, then wild horses couldn’t keep us away!

Royal Caribbean’s third wave of deployments for cruises in 2026-2027 roll out this week on 12 of their cruise ships.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

This latest batch of new cruises from the world’s largest cruise line includes sailings from Florida, the Northeast, Texas and Puerto Rico.

Royal Caribbean’s loyal guests, Crown & Anchor Society members, can start booking these new cruises before their official launch on November 20 and 21, 2024.

Royal Caribbean’s 2026/2027 Caribbean and Northeast Cruises

Cruises from Florida

The new cruises include five Royal Caribbean cruise ships sailing from Florida to the Caribbean.

Star of the Seas, the next new mega ship from Royal Caribbean, will sail from Port Canaveral on week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Icon of the Seas, the current largest ship in the world, will continue to homeport in Miami sailing seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Allure of the Seas, which is receiving a $100 million renovation next year, will sail from Fort Lauderdale on six and eight night voyages to the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean.

Adventure of the Seas will sail from both Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale on six and eight night Caribbean cruises.

Enchantment of the Seas will homeport in Tampa sailing seven-night cruises to the Western Caribbean. The ship will stop at the Royal Beach Club in Cozumel when it opens in late 2026.

Cruises from Texas

Symphony of the Seas will offer cruises from the world’s first zero-energy terminal in Galveston. The Oasis class ship will offer six to eight night cruises to the Western Caribbean and the Royal Beach Club in Cozumel.

Cruises from Puerto Rico

Brilliance of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas will both offer cruises from San Juan. Both cruise ships will sail seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean.

Cruises from the Northeast

Oasis of the Seas will sail from Cape Liberty, New Jersey  on seven- and nine-night cruises to The Bahamas. Port stops include Nassau, Port Canaveral and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Odyssey of the Seas will sail seven- to 11-night cruises from Cape Liberty that visit The Bahamas and Southern Caribbean.

Independence of the Seas will also sail from Cape Liberty on four- to nine-night cruises to Bermuda, New England, Canada and the Caribbean.

Vision of the Seas will homeport in Baltimore and offer five- to nine-night cruises to Bermuda and The Bahamas that include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay.

These are the third of eight waves of Royal Caribbean’s opening deployment schedule for cruises in 2026-2027. You can see the entire schedule here.

Second Oasis-Class Sprinkler Mishap For Royal Caribbean Within Three Weeks!

After a Halloween party on Symphony of the Seas turned sour due to a sprinkler misfire, a second Oasis-class ship for Royal Caribbean has also had an unfortunate soaking.

Guests onboard Harmony of the Seas were caught out when the sprinklers on the onboard Royal Promenade started up during the evening of 16th November.

The ship was returning to Galveston towards the end of the cruise when the incident happened. While no confirmation has been given, some guests have said that they think it may have been caused by smoke from Sorrento’s Pizza, which is situated in the Royal Promenade area.

It apparently took the crew several minutes to disable the sprinklers, by which time the area was soaked.

As a result, all food service in the evening, including room service, was suspended so that the crew could all tackle the clean up of the public areas.

The incident didn’t delay the ship and it was able to complete its itinerary without further issues, hopefully with guests not suffering any damage to their personal belongings.

The fact that a second Oasis-class ship has suffered a sprinkler misfire in three weeks is bizarre. The one on Symphony of the Seas was caused by a fog machine as part of the Halloween party, so the two incidents are completely unrelated.

The sprinklers are of course automatic, and guests are probably at least happy to see just how effective they are, in case there ever was a genuine fire that needed to be extinguished!
