Margaritaville at Sea Islander, the cruise line’s newest ship
Margaritaville at Sea currently has two cruise ships in their fleet and one of those ships, Islander, will visit new ports in the Caribbean in 2026.
Starting in 2026, Islander will visit Aruba, Curaçao, Montego Bay, and New Orleans. In addition, their first 10-day cruise will stop at Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curaçao, and Ocho Rios.
This announcement for the new port visits in the Caribbean coincides with the cruise line’s Black Friday deals that run through November 30, 2024.
Their BF deals includes the following:
60% off all cruises through 2026
3rd and 4th guests in a cabin cruise for free
Up to $300 in on board credit to spend on the ship
10% off extras like drink packages, Signature Packages, Priority Boarding, and Shore Excursions
Margaritaville at Sea Paradise
Christopher Ivy, CEO of Margaritaville at Sea, gave the following statement:
“We’re very happy to add four more popular ports of call, along with a Black Friday offer that makes it easier than ever for our guests to discover exciting new adventures with us.
“Whether they’re dreaming of relaxing on pristine beaches, exploring exotic cities, or discovering tropical hideaways, we now have a cruise option ready for everyone.”
The topic of having pets on a cruise ship always brings out a variety of opinions and preferences.

While some cruise passengers have openly stated how much they would love to bring their pet on a cruise vacation, others feel it would cause more problems and headaches.

Since cruise lines have to make sure everyone has a great time on their vacation at sea, most have disallowed any pets on board.
But one cruise line is making an exception. Margaritaville at Sea is hosting a special cruise in which dogs are invited on board as passengers.
The November 2025 sailing will be run by Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando.
Sailing out of Tampa, up to 250 dogs are expected to be on the cruise ship Margaritaville at Sea Islander, formerly a Costa Cruises vessel which was launched in 1999.
Dog Activities on Sailing
The dog-friendly cruise will include all kinds of activities for dog lovers. These will include:
Dog shows
Training sessions
Costume contests
Pet parades
Dog massages
Dog grooming
Splash stations
In order to be approved for the sailing, all cruise passengers with pets must be approved by the Cruise Tails team. Requirements like up-to-date vaccinations and a veterinarian note stating the dog is healthy will have to be met before going on the sailing.
And if these canine’s aren’t getting pampered enough, each family will be assigned a “Pet Butler” to ensure the health and well-being of all dogs on board.
Balconies will have “relief stations” for dog’s to do their business, and these areas will be maintained throughout the cruise.
Not every space on the cruise ship will be dog-accessible, however. Areas like the casino, pool decks, restaurants and dining areas, and the spa will be off-limits to dogs.
There will be a waiting list for this cruise, and a date for open bookings has not yet been released.
Dogs on Cruise Ships
This is not the first time dogs have been allowed on a cruise ship. Just last May Carnival allowed at least 40 service dogs on board Carnival Celebration to help with 40 blind guests who were dependent on these animals.
But these were service dogs and not pets, making the November Margaritaville at Sea sailing a first for the cruise industry.
Also, Royal Caribbean introduced “Rover” to the world when unveiling it’s Icon-class Icon of the Seas. Rover is a golden retriever that stays on the ship and delights children and adults alike as the “chief dog officer”, a sort of mascot for the cruise ship.
Cunard also allows dogs and cats on board for some transatlantic sailings. As long as the pets are in good health and there is enough kennel space for the animals (24 or so), pet-owners can use this service while crossing the Atlantic
P&O Cruises, and its parent company Carnival Corporation, is being sued by over 100 passengers who previously sailed on Ventura.
The lawsuit has been submitted by Hudgell Solicitors on behalf of 115 guests who sailed on the ship on different itineraries between April 2024 and June 2024.
The claim centres on how the guests suffered from illnesses, resulting in a loss of enjoyment and financial setbacks during their cruise holidays.
At the peak of the virus outbreaks on Venture, it was confirmed that over 500 passengers on a cruise on 11th May were sick.
Senior litigation executive for the solicitors, Anne Thomson, said that the claim was seeking compensation to cover a range of damages. Part of those would be medical expenses, but also money for time off work upon returning home to recover, and compensation for the lost time on holiday.
“This legal action should come as no surprise to Carnival as the problems with illness outbreaks on the Ventura over the past year have been well documented and extensively covered in the media… They are undeniable.”
Anne Thomson, senior litigation executive at Hudgell Solicitors
Thomson also made the point that guests were warned before they cruise about the outbreaks on the ship, but only the night before they sailed, and that the virus continued to cause problems onboard.
“We are sorry some of our guests may have been affected and we will be responding to the letter of claim in due course.”
P&O Cruises statement, given to the BBC
Following the cruise on 11th May 2024, the cruise line did delay the next sailing on 25th May so that the ship could be given a deep clean.
However, Hudgell Solicitors claim that guests still got sick on that voyage despite the cleaning.
Ventura was not the only ship to be hit by gastrointestinal viruses in 2024, with Aurora seeing outbreaks on the 26th April and 15th May, and Arcadia suffering an outbreak in September.

A cruise guest has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a video of his cabin when he had left the balcony door open.
On returning to the cabin, the guest who goes by the username Beaubays20 struggled to open the door due to the high winds – leaving the balcony door propped open can cause a wind tunnel effect.
The guest was in good spirits about the incident, and doesn’t mention any lost items beyond a spilled drink, or otherwise damaged property, but it shows why you’re always told to make sure your balcony door is closed whenever you leave the room.
The cruise line engaged with him in the TikTok comments, keeping the conversation light-hearted by suggesting “You should close that”.
He claimed that he hadn’t been told about closing the balcony door before the incident but that he had learned his lesson.
His video racked up over 5 million views at the time of writing, with over 1,000 comments.
Cruise guests often go viral for entertaining videos from their cruises, and this isn’t the first video within the last few months to feature problems after a balcony door was left open.
Some guests recently shared a video of birds taking over their cabin, possibly sheltering from the stormy weather in the region but generally causing chaos in the room and, subsequently, the corridor.

Days after Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas had a cruise delayed and shortened due to drydock problems, a second ship has suffered a similar fate.
Adventure of the Seas was set to depart from Barcelona on 24th November 2024, but ongoing weather problems in Spain have resulted in a two-day delay.
The departure is now rescheduled for 26th November due to the heavy rain and strong winds Spain has suffered from, which disrupted the ship’s maintenance schedule.
The adverse weather not only caused flooding in various regions but also posed significant challenges to maritime operations, impacting the cruise industry.
The original 13-night journey from Barcelona to Port Canaveral, Florida, has been shortened to 11 days. The revised itinerary will now only include a visit to Madeira on 29th November, omitting planned stops in Valencia, Malaga, and Cadiz.
Passengers have been instructed to follow their originally scheduled boarding times, with the all-aboard time set for 3:30 p.m. on 26th November.
In response to the inconvenience, the cruise line is offering compensation to affected passengers. Each guest will receive a refund equivalent to two days of their cruise fare as onboard credit.
Additionally, passengers will retain the original 13-night sailing points for the Crown and Anchor Society loyalty programme.
Because the itinerary is shortened, there’s no delay currently anticipated for the Caribbean season, which will include a mix of 6- and 8-day cruises from Port Canaveral.
Voyager of the Seas suffered similar delays, but then also had an eventful crossing when she did depart, having to rescue a stranded family at sea from a broken sailboat.
It’s certainly been an eventful transatlantic crossing season for Royal Caribbean!

Princess Cruises has a reputation for being a more premium cruise option than many of the more ‘mainstream’ cruise lines.
It’s not quite a luxury cruise line, but it definitely feels like one compared to lines such as Carnival or Costa, with many cruise fans finding that Princess is their favourite line.
To look at why, I’ve asked my Facebook fans what they think Princess Cruises does better than anyone else. I’ve supplemented that with research elsewhere on the web too.
Here’s a look at what real cruise fans think Princess does better than anyone else.
1. Medallion Technology
By some distance, the most-mentioned feature of Princess Cruises that people love is the Medallion technology.
This is a small metal medallion that all guests are given when they book with Princess Cruises. Your Medallion is a wearable device that offers a ton of functionality. It streamlines the boarding process, acts as your room key and lets you pay for items on board.
It acts as a homing beacon for you and your party too. You can check the Medallion app to find your family on the ship, and order drinks or food for delivery and it’ll be brought right to you – because the crew can see your location via your Medallion as well.
It even lets younger guests play games in different interactive areas of the ship!
The Medallion was first introduced by Princess Cruises in 2017 and has been a huge success, but no other cruise line has really picked up on it or offered similar tech.
There’s also a huge market for Medallion accessories, so you can more easily carry the Medallion around if you don’t like the standard lanyard options.
For something so small, the Medallion really makes a huge difference to the cruise experience, and Princess fans love it.
Another huge highlight for Princess cruisers is the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff on board. Across the fleet, Princess crew members are known for their welcoming attitude and genuine interest.
One of the things passengers love most is that staff members take the time to stop, chat and make you feel at home – no rush, no hurry.
Whether it’s a server in the dining room remembering your favourite drink, or a room steward greeting you by name, the service feels both personal and sincere.
Many guests commented that they never felt like ‘just another cruiser’ with Princess, suggesting that some other cruise lines are losing that personal touch.
The friendly atmosphere extends beyond just the service team. Entertainment staff, cruise directors and activity organisers are often praised for being engaging but not pushy. They strike a perfect balance that makes everyone feel included without being overwhelmed.
For many regulars, it’s these approachable crew members who make each cruise feel special. It’s why so many guests find themselves booking with Princess again and again.
3. International Café and Piazza Entertainment
Princess Cruises’ International Café and Piazza entertainment are big crowd-pleasers among guests.
The International Café is a 24-hour spot where passengers can grab snacks, pastries and coffee at any time of day or night. It’s the ideal place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or pick up a late-night treat, without ever needing to head to the buffet.
The Piazza itself is a hub of activity, and people love the vibe here. Located at the heart of the ship, it’s a lively space where entertainment often appears out of nowhere.
Guests love the ‘pop-up’ performances – from musicians to dancers – that suddenly kick off in the middle of the day. Many compare the atmosphere to an Italian square, where people gather to enjoy food and music.
For those who enjoy people-watching, the Piazza is a favourite spot. Between the International Café’s cosy seating and the variety of entertainment, you could easily spend hours relaxing there, enjoying a coffee or cocktail while soaking up the lively atmosphere.
It’s an experience that’s distinctively Princess – and one that keeps guests coming back.
4. Princess Plus and Premier Packages
The Princess Plus and Premier packages are hugely popular with those looking for an all-inclusive experience.
The Plus package bundles together drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities, along with a few other benefits. This makes it a straightforward option for those who want fewer expenses to think about while on board.
Many guests appreciate the value here, especially when you consider that buying the Plus drinks package alone costs roughly the same as buying the Plus fare with loads more included! (I’ve never understood this!)
The Premier package goes a step further. It adds extras like speciality dining and a wider selection of drinks, including top-shelf spirits and wines. Premium is ideal for guests who want a touch of luxury, with more choice and convenience wrapped into a single package.
Compared to other cruise lines, Princess Cruises’ bundled options offer significant value. Guests love not having to worry about unexpected charges piling up, letting them enjoy their cruise with peace of mind.
This smart option has made Princess a favourite for those who appreciate flexibility and a seamless, all-in-one experience.
Princess Cruises is known for its impressive variety and quality when it comes to dining options.
Guests often highlight the main dining rooms for offering consistently excellent meals, with menus that change daily and cater to a range of tastes. From classic favourites to more adventurous options, there’s something to suit everyone.
Alfredo’s Pizzeria is another particular standout. Many guests rave about the fresh, hand-tossed pizzas cooked in a brick oven. For pizza lovers, it’s an unexpected treat to find such quality at sea. I absolutely adored the vegan pizza and went back again a few days later!
Alfredo’s Pizzeria used to be free but now does have a charge, which is a shame. You do get some meals included with the Plus package, and it’s free with Premium.
Princess also offers speciality restaurants that allow guests to enjoy a more elevated experience. Options like Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria and Crown Grill provide the chance to indulge in fine dining, with attentive service and carefully crafted menus.
Here are four back-to-back comments from people when I asked what they loved about Princess:
Overall, Princess’s approach to dining is all about variety and quality, keeping even the most seasoned cruisers satisfied throughout their trip.
6. Entertainment and Activities
Princess Cruises shines when it comes to entertainment and activities, offering a great mix that keeps guests engaged without feeling overwhelming.
The theatre shows are a huge highlight, with many guests comparing them to West End or Broadway productions. From musicals to comedy acts, the performances are designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes. What’s more, they’re all included in the cruise fare.
Poolside entertainment is another favourite, with live music, themed parties and film screenings under the stars. Princess’ signature ‘Movies Under the Stars’ lets guests enjoy a cinema experience right on the deck, complete with blankets and popcorn for a cosy, open-air movie night.
Beyond the shows, Princess offers a variety of activities like dance classes, trivia contests and art auctions. For those who prefer a quieter pace, the enrichment programmes provide expert talks and workshops on topics ranging from history to photography.
Don’t expect to find really ‘active’ features on Princess ships, like rock climbing or surf simulators. That’s not the Princess vibe.
The entertainment team are engaging enough for those who want to join in, but they’re never too pushy, allowing guests to enjoy activities at their own pace.
7. Private and Exclusive Beach Experiences
Princess Cruises offers private and exclusive beach experiences, which are a huge hit with passengers seeking a special day ashore.
A standout is Princess Cays, a private resort on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, which is reserved exclusively for Princess guests. This private getaway offers beautiful sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and plenty of loungers for relaxing in the sun. Guests can explore the island with activities like snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding, or they can simply unwind in a shaded cabana.
In Roatan, Princess has access to another exclusive beach just for its passengers, creating a safe and secluded experience away from the crowds. Guests appreciate the comfort of knowing these beaches are maintained with care, providing excellent facilities and attentive service from the onboard staff.
Whether it’s soaking up the sun, enjoying beachside service or having a tropical lunch brought right to their private bungalow, these exclusive beach options are a highlight of many cruises. It’s a premium perk that lets Princess guests experience some of the most beautiful Caribbean destinations in a more personal way.
8. Efficient Check-In Process
Princess Cruises is praised for its smooth and efficient check-in process. Thanks to the Medallion technology, check-in is faster and more streamlined than on many other cruise lines.
Guests can complete most of the check-in steps ahead of time through the MedallionClass app, including uploading documents and completing health questionnaires. When they arrive at the port, it’s often a quick scan and go, with little waiting or queuing involved.
Many guests appreciate how this efficient process allows them to get on board and start their holiday sooner. With the Medallion in hand, passengers can head straight to their staterooms without needing to pick up a separate cruise card.
It’s all designed to reduce hassle and create a smooth start to the journey, something frequent cruisers notice and love about Princess.
9. Loyalty Programme Benefits
Princess Cruises’ loyalty programme, the Captain’s Circle, is a favourite among frequent cruisers and offers some impressive perks that keep guests coming back.
Many cruise lines have loyalty programmes that reward repeat passengers, but Princess fans often find that the Captain’s Circle offers meaningful benefits as you reach higher tiers.
Early access to special events, exclusive onboard receptions, priority boarding and discounted fares are all perks that make a noticeable difference.
Platinum and Elite members enjoy special benefits like complimentary internet minutes, laundry services and extra discounts on future bookings. Many passengers mention that these perks help them feel recognised and valued for their loyalty to Princess.
10. Iconic Ship Horn and Sail-Away Music
One of the charming traditions that sets Princess Cruises apart is its iconic ship horn, and the memorable sail-away music that accompanies departures.
Princess ships feature a unique horn that plays a medley of tunes, with the most beloved being the ‘Love Boat’ theme song. The TV show was set on a Princess ship, after all!
For many passengers, this evokes feelings of nostalgia and excitement as they prepare to embark on their adventure. The joyful sound of the horn has become a signature of the Princess experience, marking the start of a wonderful holiday.
It’s a small touch, but you’d be surprised how many people mention it when they list their reasons for booking Princess!
11. Destination Experts and Shore Excursion Advice
All cruise lines offer shore excursions, with experts on hand to help you with advice. But it often feels like they’re nudging you towards paying for a tour rather than being genuine.
Not so with Princess Cruises. A lot of cruisers said that the cruise line’s destination experts genuinely feel helpful. The consultations they offer include plenty of advice on how to explore independently in ports where it’s suitable, if that’s what you’d prefer.
You can still take your pick from a wide range of curated excursions. But the fact that the cruise line doesn’t push the ‘hard sell’ makes it feel more like authentic advice, so you can decide on the best approach for exploring ashore.
Final word
Remember that these aren’t just good things about Princess Cruises, but more what makes the cruise line stand out.
It’s subjective, absolutely, but these are the reasons that many people prefer to cruise with Princess. There are plenty of other exciting things that the cruise line does really well, and that’s why so many love their time on a Princess sailing.
It’s not the perfect option for everyone – no cruise line could be – but if Princess sounds like the kind of cruise you’re looking for, it’s definitely one to check out.

Jenni Fielding is the founder of Cruise Mummy. She has worked in the cruise industry since 2015 and has taken over 30 cruises. Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays.
When you’re cruising, your cabin will be looked after by a cabin steward or cabin attendant – but they do much more than just cleaning.
Cabin stewards are your go-to for anything you might need to improve your stay. Although they don’t offer butler-level services (some suites or ships do have those though), you can always ask if you need something.
As long as it’s a reasonable request, they’ll probably sort it out for you – and surprisingly quickly, too!
I asked my Facebook followers for the extras they asked cabin stewards for, and did some extra research too. Here’s the list of the most popular requests.
1. Ice and/or ice bucket
Nothing quite says ‘holiday mode’ like a chilled drink in hand! Whether it’s for a G&T on the balcony or keeping your water cool, an ice bucket is one of the most popular requests.
Some guests even ask for an ice bucket at a set time each day, so it’s ready right when they want it. Now that’s efficient cruising!
Cabin stewards are happy to keep you stocked, especially if they know it’s part of your daily routine. They might not always be able to do it for a certain time, but there’s no harm in asking.
2. Extra pillows (including thinner pillows)
Not all cruise ship pillows are made equal, and everyone’s got their own preference for the perfect pillow.
For some, that means piling on extra cushions for a bit of luxury. For others, a thinner pillow does the trick, especially if the standard ones feel a bit too plump.
Just ask your cabin steward, and you’ll likely get exactly what you need for a great night’s sleep.
Some cruise lines do make a pillow menu a perk of higher-class staterooms/suites. So if you’ve booked a regular cabin, don’t expect to always have the options you want.
Still, the attendants want you to sleep well – happy cruisers tend to tip better! – so they’ll do what they can, within the rules.
3. Extra towels
It’s no wonder that people often ask for a few extra towels, whether they’re lounging by the pool or getting ready for dinner.
Some guests like having a dedicated towel just for the beach or excursions. Others simply enjoy the convenience of a fresh one each day.
Your cabin steward is usually more than willing to keep you well-stocked, so you’ll never be left damp and waiting.
If you’re a plus-size guest, and the provided towels don’t quite wrap around as much as you’d like, they may be able to rustle up a larger towel for you to use.
Don’t be ashamed to ask. I’m sure they’ve been asked for much worse!
4. Hangers (extra or thinner)
Closet space on a cruise is often at a premium, and chunky wooden hangers don’t always help when you’ve packed half your wardrobe (just in case, right?).
Extra or slimmer hangers can make all the difference, allowing you to keep things organised and wrinkle-free.
Just a quick word with your steward, and you’ll be able to hang up everything without needing to cram.
Some people pack their own hangers – don’t! You really don’t need to, there’ll always be more available and you’re just wasting suitcase space.
5. Body lotion
After a day in the sun, or just to pamper yourself, body lotion is a popular request. Especially if it’s a brand offered by the cruise line, like The White Company on P&O ships.
Sometimes this isn’t provided automatically, but cabin stewards often have a stash for those who ask.
It’s a small luxury that makes a big difference, and it’s a lovely treat for your skin after all that salty sea air.
6. Conditioner
Although most cabins provide shampoo and shower gel, conditioner isn’t always guaranteed. Let’s be honest: a day of sun, sea and pool water can leave your hair feeling a bit parched.
Many guests ask their steward to bring a bottle of conditioner to keep their locks in holiday shape.
Plus, it saves precious suitcase space if you know your steward can provide the essentials.
7. Blanket
Cruise ship duvets can be a bit heavy in warmer climates, and many guests prefer a lighter option.
That’s where a blanket comes in handy. It’s perfect for those who like a little warmth without being too toasty.
A simple request to your steward, and you’ll have a cosy but breathable blanket waiting on the bed. For some, a blanket is also great for curling up on the balcony for a bit of late-night stargazing.
8. Mattress toppers or pillow tops
If you’re don’t quite find the bed to your liking, asking for a mattress topper can make a world of difference.
Many experienced cruisers swear by this for a more comfortable night’s sleep. And it’s an easy request that cabin stewards are used to accommodating.
Whether you prefer a bit more cushion or just want that ‘hotel bed’ feel, a mattress topper can be the key to waking up refreshed.
9. Lemons and limes
It’s the little touches that make a holiday special. For many, that includes a slice of lemon or lime to accompany their favourite drink. From gin and tonics to an extra dash of citrus in your water, they can make all the difference.
Your cabin steward is often happy to bring a few slices of lemon or lime each day, ensuring your refreshments are just right – no extra trips to the bar required.
10. Fresh milk for morning coffees
If you’re a serious coffee drinker, the mini coffee creamers in your cabin might not quite cut it.
Many guests request fresh milk from their steward for a better-tasting morning brew. It’s a simple way to start the day with a smile.
Some cruisers like me even ask for alternatives like oat or almond milk. As long as they’ve got it onboard, your steward will usually be happy to oblige.
Not every cruise ship has facilities to make tea or coffee in your room, but if they do, fresh milk is a reasonable request to make.
11. Coffee (extra or decaf)
Again, not every cruise ship will have tea and coffee facilities in your room. If they do, you might not have many options provided, or not enough if everyone in the room likes a hot drink.
If you need extra coffee or prefer decaf options, let your cabin steward know. They’ll be able to rustle up some before you know it, so you’ll always have the hot drink you need to start the day.
12. Kettle
British cruise lines such as P&O Cruises and Marella will typically provide a kettle in your cabin for you. It’s a staple of British hotel rooms – we like a tea tray and our favourite drinks ready to enjoy.
But American-style or American-owned cruise lines won’t usually provide one, and you often aren’t allowed to bring your own.
The solution? Request one. Sometimes – but not always – you’ll be given a kettle that you can use.
Not all cruise ships have a stock of kettles for guests, so don’t assume it’s guaranteed. But the cabin steward will help track down a kettle if it’s possible.
13. Fan
If you prefer a bit of extra airflow in your cabin, you’re not alone. Some cruisers find cabin air-con doesn’t quite do the job, or they prefer the gentle hum of a fan to help them sleep.
You may be allowed to bring fans onboard some cruise ships, but they’re usually bulky items, so it’s better to leave them at home.
Instead, many cabin stewards can provide a small fan upon request. It’s a lifesaver during those warmer nights, especially when sailing in tropical climates.
With limited plug sockets in many cabins, an extension cable can be a game-changer for guests with phones, tablets, cameras and all the other gadgets we travel with.
Instead of juggling devices or charging one at a time, you can keep everything powered up and ready to go.
Cabin stewards often have a few extension cables spare, or they might be able to source one for you if you ask. Priority will typically be given to guests with a medical need, such as those using CPAP machines.
Feel free to ask if you didn’t bring your own, or you did but it was a surge-protected cable and was confiscated at check-in.
15. Bathrobe
For a bit of added luxury, nothing beats a cosy robe. Guests love having a robe to lounge in, whether for a morning coffee on the balcony or winding down after a day of exploring.
Just ask your steward, and you might find one waiting on your next return to the cabin.
Some lines include them as standard in certain cabin categories, while others only provide them upon request. That’s understandable, since it can significantly cut down on laundry costs. If not all guests use them, it’s a waste since they will need cleaning between cruises even if unused.
If your cruise line lets you bring wine on board, you’ll probably need a corkscrew and a couple of glasses to enjoy it.
Rather than struggle to open a bottle, or drink from coffee mugs, a quick chat with your steward can ensure you have everything you need for a private wine tasting on your own balcony. Cheers to that!
This one’s for the animal lovers! Many guests adore the towel animals that stewards sometimes leave on the bed each night, but they aren’t always created as standard now. You might need to ask for your steward to make them, if possible.
Some guests even ask to keep them displayed for the entire cruise. Over a week, you can build up your own ‘towel zoo’ of elephants, swans and more.
Whether or not it’s possible will depend on the steward and the ship’s policy. After all, that’s a lot of laundry to build up for the end of the cruise. But you never know!
How to make cabin steward requests
Making requests to your cabin steward is simple – it’s really just a matter of asking!
Cabin stewards are there to make your stay as comfortable as possible. So they’re usually happy to help with any reasonable requests.
If you spot your steward in the hallway or nearby, feel free to politely ask for whatever you need. They’re generally quite responsive, and will take note of any specific requests you have.
But what if your steward isn’t around when you’re in the cabin? No problem – leaving a polite note works just as well.
Many cruisers write down their requests on a piece of paper and leave it somewhere for the steward to see, like on the desk or bedside table. Just make it friendly and clear, and they’ll take care of it as soon as they can.
Some people even like to leave a small thank-you note alongside their requests. It’s a thoughtful touch that’s always appreciated by these hard-working crew members.
On most cruise ships you can also call the housekeeping department from the phone in your cabin and leave a message with your request.
A quick ask or a small note can go a long way in getting the most out of your cabin experience. It’s all part of making your cruise as enjoyable as possible!
Final word
Some people don’t feel comfortable asking their cabin steward for extras, but honestly, it’s fine to do so! Their job is to help out, and while they can’t wave a magic wand, they’ll always try their best to help.
A lot of people prefer to tip extra for these requests. It’s a nice touch to do so, especially if your cabin steward goes above and beyond.
Just remember that cabin stewards work really hard. So if a request takes a little longer than you’d like, feel free to remind them but be polite when you do!

A new wave of concern is rising among travellers. This growing trend of local pushback against mass tourism has sparked debates about the future of travel, especially in beloved cruise destinations.
Anti-tourism protests have been making headlines, leaving many cruisers to wonder: should we be worried?
The Rise of Anti-Tourism Sentiment
Cruise passengers dreaming of sun-soaked beaches and charming coastal towns might be surprised to be greeted by protest signs instead of welcome banners. From the canals of Venice to the streets of Barcelona, residents are voicing their concerns about the impact of tourism on their daily lives.
Global Hotspots for Protests
Barcelona has become a focal point for anti-tourism demonstrations. In a recent protest, thousands of residents took to the streets, with some even using water pistols to spray tourists.
Venice, another cruise favourite, has introduced a controversial entry fee for day-trippers in an attempt to manage visitor numbers.
Amsterdam has seen climate protesters delay cruise ships, highlighting the environmental concerns surrounding the industry.
These incidents aren’t isolated. The Canary Islands, Mallorca, and even far-flung destinations like Juneau in Alaska have all experienced some form of protest or proposed restrictions on cruise tourism.
The message from locals is clear: they feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of visitors flooding their cities.
Reasons Behind the Backlash
So, why are locals so upset? It’s not just about crowded streets and long queues. The reasons run deeper, touching on issues of housing, environment and quality of life.
In many popular cruise destinations, locals are being priced out of their own neighbourhoods. Short-term rentals and second homes for tourists have caused housing prices to skyrocket. This makes it difficult for residents to afford to live in their own cities.
Environmental concerns are also at the forefront. A study by Transport & Environment found that Europe’s luxury cruise ships emit as much toxic sulphur as one billion cars.
This statistic has fuelled protests by environmental groups, who argue that cruise tourism is unsustainable in its current form.
The Impact of Anti-Tourism on the Cruise Industry
With protests making headlines, cruise lines are starting to feel the heat. The industry now finds itself navigating the choppy waters of public opinion.
Current and Potential Disruptions
Some cruise itineraries have already been affected by these protests. In Amsterdam, a cruise ship was delayed for hours when protesters chained themselves to a lock gate.
Venice’s ban on large cruise ships in the city centre has forced companies to rethink their Italian itineraries.
Looking ahead, more disruptions seem likely. Marie-Caroline Laurent, European director of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), has warned that cruise lines might need to “adapt itineraries” if they feel passengers won’t be well-treated in certain destinations. This could mean fewer stops at some of Europe’s most iconic ports.
Industry Response
Many cruise lines are investing in more environmentally friendly technologies, such as cleaner fuels and advanced waste management systems. They’re also working with local communities to address concerns about overcrowding and economic impact.
CLIA and other industry bodies are actively engaging with local governments to find solutions. They’re highlighting the economic benefits of cruise tourism, while acknowledging the need for sustainable practices.
Some cruise lines are even exploring the idea of smaller ships that can access alternative ports, spreading out the impact of tourism.
Government and Local Authority Actions to Manage Tourism
As tensions rise, local governments are stepping in with new rules and regulations aimed at managing tourism flows, especially from cruise ships.
Amsterdam plans to reduce cruise stops by nearly half by 2026, and ban them entirely by 2035.
Greece, another popular cruise destination, has also announced new measures to combat overtourism. These include limits on daily cruise ship arrivals, increased docking fees for popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini, and a new passenger fee of up to €20 for visited islands.
Balancing Tourism and Local Interests
Finding the right balance between tourism revenue and residents’ quality of life is a tricky task for local authorities. Many destinations are exploring sustainable tourism initiatives.
For example, some Greek islands are considering caps on visitor numbers to protect their infrastructure and environment.
Governments are also looking at ways to spread tourism benefits more evenly. This might include promoting less-visited areas, or encouraging longer stays rather than day trips. The goal is to maintain the economic benefits of tourism while reducing its negative impacts on local communities.
Should Cruisers Be Worried About Anti-Tourism Protests?
With all this talk of protests and restrictions, it’s natural for cruise enthusiasts to feel concerned. But how worried should you really be?
Safety Concerns
The good news is that personal safety is rarely an issue in these protests. Most demonstrations are peaceful, and aimed at raising awareness rather than harming tourists. The water pistol incident in Barcelona, while attention grabbing, was more symbolic than threatening.
However, some destinations have seen an increase in petty criminals targeting tourists. Barcelona, for instance, has reported a rise in theft and pickpocketing. Although not directly related to anti-tourism sentiment, it’s something travellers should be aware of.
Potential for Disrupted Holidays
The bigger concern for cruisers is the potential for disrupted itineraries. As more cities implement restrictions or outright bans on cruise ships, your dream Mediterranean holiday might look different than expected. You may find some iconic ports replaced with lesser-known destinations.
There’s also the possibility of limited access to attractions or longer queues, as cities try to manage tourist numbers. This could mean less time to explore or the need for more advance planning.
Tips for Acting Responsibly When Cruising to Other Cities
While the situation might seem daunting, there’s plenty you can do to be a responsible cruiser and minimise your impact on local communities.
Respect local customs and regulations. If a city has implemented a tourist tax or entry fee, understand that it’s part of their efforts to manage tourism sustainably.
Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas.
Try to learn a few words of the local language, which goes a long way in showing respect.
Support local businesses rather than just sticking to tourist traps. This helps spread the economic benefits of your visit.
Consider spending a night or two in the city, rather than just dropping in for a few hours. This allows for a deeper engagement with the destination and its people.
Look for cruise lines that prioritise sustainability. Many companies are investing in cleaner technologies and more responsible practices.
Smaller ships often have less environmental impact, and can access ports that are off-limits to larger vessels.
Consider cruises that visit lesser-known destinations. This not only provides unique experiences, but also helps to more evenly distribute the impact of tourism.
Off-season cruises can also help reduce overcrowding in popular destinations.
The Future of Cruise Tourism
The cruise industry is at a crossroads, facing pressure to evolve and address the concerns raised by anti-tourism movements.
Industry Adaptations
Cruise lines are investing heavily in new technologies to reduce their environmental footprint. This includes more efficient engines, advanced waste management systems, and even experiments with alternative fuels. Some companies are looking at ways to better integrate with local economies, ensuring that more tourism income stays in the communities they visit.
There’s also a trend towards more immersive, culturally sensitive experiences. Rather than simply dropping passengers off for a few hours of sightseeing, cruise lines are partnering with local organisations to offer more meaningful interactions.
Emerging Destinations
As traditional cruise hotspots become more restrictive, the industry is exploring new horizons. This could mean more cruises to less-visited parts of the Mediterranean, increased focus on Northern European destinations, or even the development of new ports in areas eager for tourism development.
Some cruise lines are also looking at slower-paced itineraries that spend more time in each port. This allows for a deeper exploration of destinations, and can help reduce the feeling of tourist ‘invasions’ that many cities complain about.
The future of cruise tourism will likely involve a more balanced approach, with greater consideration for local communities and environments. Although this might mean some changes to the traditional cruise experience, it also opens up exciting new possibilities for travellers.
In conclusion, while anti-tourism protests are a concern, they shouldn’t necessarily deter you from cruising. By staying informed, choosing responsible options and being mindful of your impact, you can still enjoy the many pleasures of a cruise holiday. The key is to have respect for local communities and an openness to new experiences.
As the industry evolves, cruising has the potential to become a more sustainable and enriching form of travel, benefiting both passengers and destinations alike.
