Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas performed a dramatic rescue during its transatlantic voyage, saving a stranded family and their dog off the coast of Marrakesh, Morocco.
The incident occurred on Friday, 15th November 2024. The family’s sailboat had suffered engine failure and lost its masts, leaving them powerless in the waters off West Africa.
According to passengers onboard the cruise ship, the stranded group included two adults, two children, and a black Labrador retriever. Some reports suggested there could have been as many as six people on the sailboat.
Currently on @RoyalCaribbean Voyager of the Seas sailing towards Gran Canaria. We diverted to rescue a family of 2 adults, 2 minors, and a dog who were stranded with a broken sail last and a stalled engine. Everyone is on board and safe, but they had to leave the boat behind. pic.twitter.com/J10ogoOHtg
Before bringing the family onboard, engineers from the ship attempted to repair the damaged sailboat.
When the repairs proved unsuccessful, the crew transferred the family to a Royal Caribbean lifeboat in choppy seas and brought them aboard the 138,194-gross-ton ship.
Passengers cheered as the rescue operation concluded. “The rescue crew showed great skill (and bravery) in choppy seas to bring everyone safely aboard. There was a well-deserved big round of cheers and applause from all of the spectators on their balconies,” shared a passenger.
Although there was some discussion about towing the sailboat for later repairs, it was ultimately abandoned due to the challenges involved.
The family is being cared for onboard the Voyager of the Seas. The crew has provided them with food, water, and medical care as needed. The ship will transport the family to its next scheduled port of call in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, on 17th November 2024.
From there, the family can arrange their next steps with local authorities. While it might sound appealing to continue the cruise, non-paying passengers are typically disembarked at the next available port due to documentation and logistical issues.
The Voyager of the Seas embarked on its 16-night transatlantic sailing from Barcelona, Spain, on 10th November.
It was a delayed departure after weather had held up the drydock renovations – perhaps the family would’ve been in even more trouble if the ship’s drydock had run on schedule!
After its stop in Gran Canaria, the ship will make its final port call in Tenerife, Canary Islands, on 18th November, before continuing with sea days to Port Canaveral, Florida, where it is scheduled to arrive on 26th November.

Carnival has listened to guest feedback about the limited snack options available late at night, and slow service times, and has announced a slew of changes.
Via Brand Ambassador John Heald on Facebook, the cruise line has confirmed that it will now offer a wider range of food options and take steps to halve wait times across the fleet.
Guests have complained about the early closure of the onboard pizzerias and delis earlier in the day on Carnival ships, and those closures won’t be impacted.
Instead, more options will now be added to the buffet, where guests will now be able to enjoy not just pizza but also chicken tenders, hot dogs, sandwiches, cookies and some other dessert items later into the night.
Guests will be able to enjoy some soups and salads, a range of cakes, as well as chips and salsa.
Other options will be available depending on the ship and night, with the menu varying based on what ingredients are available to the kitchen crew.
There will always be a selection of vegetarian and vegan options available, and guests will be able to request a gluten-free pizza to be made fresh.
To improve service, a secondary station will remain open for late night serving, so guests will be able to join either queue and access the same food options – in theory, halving the wait time for guests.
The late night snack menu was first introduced by Carnival in 2023, but guests have asked for improved options since then.
Many guests enjoy late nights on a Carnival cruise, whether in the casino, the bars or the lounges, and they often want to grab a bite to eat to sustain themselves for the ongoing festivities.
These new changes should help night-owls to find something they like every night. They’ve already rolled out to some ships in the fleet, including Carnival Celebration, Carnival Glory, and Carnival Venezia.
Carnival hasn’t confirmed the rollout times for the remainder of the fleet.

Never book a cruise without having a hunt around to find yourself the best deal!
I wanted to be blunt and say that immediately because it’s really important. If you just took the word of your travel agent, or worse, went straight to the cruise line every time, you might be paying way over the odds for your cruise holidays.
But if you’re smart, and you hunt around for a good deal, you’ll often make some amazing savings – money that can then be put towards another cruise. Win!
I’ve put together this list of the best tips for finding cruise deals. Don’t worry, it’s not about giving yourself a ton of work to do! These easy tips will make finding the best value cruises super-easy.
1. Sign up to my newsletter!
Every Thursday, I send out a newsletter to my email subscribers which has my pick of the best cruise deals that I’ve found or been sent each week.
I get a lot of emails from cruise lines and other partners with their best deals, so I sift through those each week, but then I also spend time hunting out deals myself.
(And not just to put the email together… Sometimes I just like looking).
Then, every Thursday I’ll send out the collated list to my subscriber list.
So with one quick sign-up, you don’t have to do anything else except wait for the email to arrive in your inbox.
Travelzoo is one of the world’s biggest travel clubs – they have over 30 million members around the world who share your love for travel!
And they also love a good deal, too…
You can browse the Travelzoo website if you want to check out some top deals on cruises, but the very best offers – the exclusive ones – are reserved for members.
Like me, they check tons of offers every week and pick out just the best ones that offer the best value, removing all the hard work for you.
You can join Travelzoo here if you want to get sent their top deals each week.
3. Add yourself to cruise-themed Facebook groups
Facebook is full of communities of cruise lovers who are always sharing tips, tricks, and, yes, the latest deals.
These groups are great because you’re connecting with people who share your passion and who often have a wealth of experience.
Some members may even post deals they’ve found, along with advice on how to snag the best cabins or perks. Plus, if you’re new to cruising, it’s a fantastic way to learn from seasoned pros who are happy to share their wisdom.
Just type “cruise deals” or “cruise tips” into Facebook’s search bar, and you’ll find groups to join in no time.
It’s a good idea to join groups about cruising in general, such as my Cruise Chat group, but also pick some for your favourite cruise line or ship.
Also try looking for groups related to your cruise niche, if you have one. The Solo Cruise Form by Passion For Cruises is great for single travellers, as an example, and they even host meet-ups in the UK for members!
4. Follow cruise lines on social media
Sometimes the best deals aren’t because someone has an insider tip or an exclusive special offer. Sometimes it’s as simple as a cruise line’s promotion being pretty good.
When a cruise line starts a promotion, they’ll usually shout about it on social media, so follow them to get ahead of the curve and find out as soon as something good launches.
It’s also a great way to stay updated on exciting new itineraries or special events onboard their ships.
5. Read cruise blogs for insider tips
There’s nothing quite like learning from someone who’s been there, done that, and got the nautical T-shirt.
Cruise blogs (like this one!) are packed with insider knowledge, including tips on how to save money, the best ways to use onboard credit, and secrets to making the most of your time on board.
You’ll also find reviews of cruise lines, ships, and destinations, helping you choose the best fit for your next adventure. Bonus: Many cruise bloggers also share deals they come across or are tipped off about!
I’m not one to hog all the attention, so check my guide on the best cruise blogs to see some other people you can follow!
6. Join Reddit communities about cruising
If you’re not already a Redditor, it’s worth creating an account just to access the cruise-related communities on the platform.
Subreddits like r/Cruise are filled with helpful discussions about everything from packing tips to where to find the best deals.
You’ll also find threads where cruisers share discount codes or alerts for price drops.
The platform is a treasure trove of information, and because it’s discussion-based, you can ask questions and get personalised advice from fellow cruise enthusiasts.
(Also, there is – without exception – always a funny thread on subreddits like r/Cruise to get lost in, whether it’s about weird complaints, mishaps onboard or something else!)
7. Check travel agencies
It might sound old-school, but travel agencies can still be a great source of cruise deals, especially if you attend their in-person events or sign up for their newsletters.
Many agencies have exclusive partnerships with cruise lines, meaning they can offer deals or perks like free upgrades or onboard credits that you won’t find anywhere else.
Pro tip: Look out for local agencies that specialise in cruises – they often have the best connections!
And don’t be afraid to pop into a physical travel agency to have a natter and find out more. Sure, they’ve probably put their best deals in the window to attract you in, but they might have something else to surprise you with.
If you prefer to build up a personal connection with the cruise experts, YouTube is your friend.
Cruise YouTubers often post vlogs of their trips, including detailed reviews of ships, itineraries, and onboard experiences.
They’ll frequently share tips on saving money, and sometimes they’re even offered deals to pass along to their viewers.
Plus, it’s a fun way to get excited about your upcoming trip by seeing what you can expect!
9. Consider sale seasons
At certain times in the year, you might get a better deal for a cruise. BUT I wouldn’t recommend always waiting for those periods, because you can miss out on itineraries that sell out quickly.
As a guide, the best deals can usually be had in January, or around Black Friday. But there’s often cruise lines with summer sales too.
Again, don’t hold off if you find a good cruise deal. It may not get any better during these windows, and you might just miss out on a great price.
However, definitely make sure you’re following all the rest of these tips around those key sale periods, because you might then find a deal that blows you away.

Final word
Cruising doesn’t have to break the bank. With just a little bit of effort upfront, you can save hundreds – or even thousands – on your next holiday at sea.
Whether it’s signing up for newsletters (ahem, like mine), joining Travelzoo, or connecting with like-minded cruisers online, there are so many ways to find amazing deals.
The best part? The more you save, the more you can cruise. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?
I’ve got more tips on getting a good deal, so next why don’t you check out these guides?
TUI River Cruises celebrated a major milestone with the launch of its first Nile river cruise ship, the TUI Al Horeya, during a special blessing ceremony held on the Nile in Luxor.
The event featured a traditional “Prayer to Hapi” ritual, honouring the ancient Egyptian god of the Nile and invoking blessings for safe voyages.
As part of the ceremony, 100 biodegradable candles were set afloat on the river. Guests participated by making personal wishes and placing the candles in the water, alongside a symbolic papyrus scroll inscribed with “TUI Al Horeya” in Arabic.
The festivities continued onboard the ship with a vibrant celebration, including live performances by Whirling Dervishes, a sand artist narrating the history of the Nile, and a gala dinner accompanied by entertainment from TUI’s team.
After the onboard festivities, the TUI Al Horeya began her inaugural journey, sailing toward Luxor Temple.
“The official first voyage of the TUI Al Horeya is a massive milestone for TUI River Cruises being the first ship to sail outside of European waters. Since going on sale, we have sold 80 percent of our winter Nile program, and new bookings are continuing to come in week-by-week – we can’t wait to greet these passengers onboard for this season’s sailings.”
Katy Berzins, Head of TUI River Cruises
The newly refurbished TUI Al Horeya embarked on its seven-day maiden voyage along the Nile from Luxor on 4th November 2025.

Two Princess cruise ships have both suffered from an outbreak of a gastrointestinal virus onboard within a few days of each other, with guests asked to vacate on several occasions for deep cleaning.
The first incident occurred on Diamond Princess during a 21-night sailing around Australia and New Zealand.
After the virus took hold, it got serious enough that guests were told they had to go ashore on three separate occasions for six hours in Melbourne, Auckland, and then Melbourne again so that the ship could be deep cleaned.
Guests who wanted to stay onboard to enjoy the amenities were not permitted – everyone had to leave the ship.
As compensation, guests were given a $50 onboard credit for each time they were asked to leave the ship for six hours.
And now, it’s been confirmed that a second outbreak has happened on Crown Princess, also sailing around the Australia and New Zealand region.
Guests on that ship were not forced to vacate, but a letter was sent asking guests to go ashore in Darwin if possible while a deep clean was carried out.
Not only were all public areas disinfected, but all guest staterooms were too, hence the recommendation to leave the ship and get out of the way for a couple of hours.
Guests who reported symptoms were asked not to leave the ship but instead remain quarantined within their cabins.
It hasn’t been confirmed which virus it was that hit both ships – it’s not always norovirus – nor how many guests or crew members were affected.
However, the deep cleaning, along with the request for guests to leave the ship, suggests that neither incident was isolated.

Royal Caribbean is planning to continue sailing to its private destination in Labadee, Haiti even after reports of recent unrest in other parts of the country.
Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned all flights to Haiti after a Spirit Airlines airplane was shot at while attempting to land in Port-au-Prince on Monday. A flight attendant was injured in the gunfire.
Other reports of aircraft being riddled with bullets prompted a temporary shutdown of the airport as well.
During the 30-day ban, the FAA is not permitting any planes to fly under 10,000 feet over Haiti.
Royal Caribbean has 9 more scheduled visits to Labadee in November and 18 more planned in December of this year.
Labadee, Haiti
But the 250-acre private area is quite separate from the rest of the country that is facing civil unrest and is 128 miles from the capital city.
The cruise port area is surrounded by fencing and barriers and is patrolled by a security team that utilizes security systems and measures to keep cruise passengers safe.
The cruise line continues to keep on eye on the developments in the region, though, telling NBC, “The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intelligence Team continuously monitors the situation in Haiti.”
Impact on Shore Excursions
While cruise passengers will continue to see Labadee on their itineraries, there are some changes Royal Caribbean has had to make.
Some shore excursions are no longer available in Haiti. Several tours and boat rides off the coast of Haiti are being suspended for now as the cruise line tries to keep its guests safe.
Passengers have stated that some excursions like snorkeling, fishing, and any activity that went too far from the cruise port were cancelled.
Impacted guests have been notified of these changes and have been refunded for shore excursions that were already booked.
A letter sent to passengers stated, “As we return to visiting Labadee, we’re phasing the rollout of some of our tours and temporarily adjusting our tour offerings. As a result, we’ve cancelled your excursion and issued a full refund to your original form of payment.”
Unrest in Haiti
Several commercial flights were targeted by armed groups at the nation’s largest airport this week, but unrest and violence have been an ongoing issue for several years now.
Political instability and a difficult economic situation have led to gang violence that caused Royal Caribbean to stop sailing to the area back in March of 2024.
It was just in October that the cruise line decided to come back to the country, having confidence in the security of the private destination of Labadee.
Cruise Lines to Haiti
Royal Caribbean is the only cruise line to call on Labadee right now. Celebrity Cruises, owned by the same parent company, has removed Haiti from all sailings in the near future.
Some 2025 sailings for Celebrity still have Labadee, Haiti listed as a port of call, but the company is still monitoring the situation as well.
A cruise line is simplifying their cruise fares into one and they will begin to include free WiFi and basic drinks during meals.

Starting with all new bookings on December 11, 2024 (for cruises that depart from March 21, 2025 and on), Celestyal Cruises will offer just one cruise fare, Celestyal One. Not only will this simplify the booking process and on board experience, but basic WiFi will also be complimentary.
Celestyal One will include the following:
Complimentary WiFi for all guests
All port fees and crew gratuities
Unlimited sodas in main restaurants during meals
Unlimited filter coffee, tea, water and juice stations from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm each day
Breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus extra snacks from Greek Deli and Pizza Oven
On board activities and entertainment
The free essential WiFi will allow guests to browse the web, send emails, and use texting and messaging apps.
Guests will also have options to upgrade their WiFi to allow for streaming or to make video calls.
In addition to the one new cruise fare, the cruise line will also debut Celestyal Pay, a dedicated food and drink tab.
It will be similar to what Virgin Voyages currently offers in that you can prepurchase a bar tab and receive an extra bonus that ranges from 15-25% for free drinks.
Because of this new bar tab, Celestyal Cruises will no longer have drink packages.
Guests who book a premium cabin, a balcony or above, will receive the following free perks:
The cruise line also said in a conference call earlier today that they are also planning to debut an onboard app in the next year.
Lee Haslett, Chief Commercial Officer at Celestyal, said the following about these new changes for the cruise line:
“We’re passionate about high value – whether it’s value for time, money or experience. So, we’re thrilled to be introducing our new ‘Celestyal One’ fare structure and ‘CelestyalPay’ as a direct response to feedback from our guests and travel agent partners.
“Our new simplified approach offers enhanced inclusions, more choice, more flexibility and out-of-this-world value.
“From complimentary essential WiFi, unlimited sodas, and crew gratuities to an expanded range of locally inspired dining options, we’re making sure guests have everything they need to enjoy their time onboard with ease and convenience.”
