Viking Adds Tenth Nile River Ship with Delivery of Viking Sekhmet

Viking has taken delivery of another new river ship built for Egypt’s Nile River, continuing its rapid expansion in one of river cruising’s most in-demand destinations. The new vessel, Viking Sekhmet, was handed over during a ceremony at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, according to Cruise Fever, and is reported elsewhere to be the tenth Nile ship in Viking’s fleet.

For cruise passengers, the addition means more capacity and more departure dates on one of Viking’s most sought-after itineraries, the 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids journey. As Viking’s Egypt program has grown in popularity, demand has at times outpaced available cabins, so a new ship should help more travelers secure a spot without long waits.

What’s New Aboard Viking Sekhmet

Viking Sekhmet is a sister ship to most of the vessels already sailing in Viking’s Nile fleet, carrying 82 guests across 41 cabins. That intimate size is consistent with the rest of Viking’s river fleet worldwide, where the line has built a reputation for smaller ships, consistent design, and a predictable onboard experience from one vessel to the next.

Because the new ship mirrors its fleet mates in layout and size, returning Viking guests should find the onboard experience familiar even if they sail on a different Nile vessel than before.

Inside the Pharaohs and Pyramids Itinerary

The itinerary that Viking Sekhmet will join begins with several nights in Cairo, giving guests time to see the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum before the cruise portion begins. Travelers then fly to Luxor to board the ship for about a week sailing the Nile.

During the river portion, excursions touch on some of Egypt’s most significant ancient sites, including temple complexes along the river and burial sites associated with the pharaohs, as well as a stop at a Nubian village where guests can learn about local traditions. The trip concludes with a return flight to Cairo for a final night before guests head home.

For passengers weighing an Egypt itinerary, the structure is worth noting: much of the trip combines land touring with the river cruise itself, so travelers should expect a mix of hotel stays, flights, and time aboard the ship rather than a straightforward port-to-port sailing.

Why Viking Keeps Investing in Egypt

Viking describes itself as the world’s largest river cruise line, and its continued shipbuilding in Egypt signals confidence that demand for Nile cruising will keep growing. Leah Talactac, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viking, said the Nile “continues to be a destination that inspires curious travelers,” and added that the new ship brings “more opportunities for curious travelers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort.”

For travelers considering a Nile cruise, the expansion suggests Viking plans to keep Egypt as a core part of its offering rather than a one-off addition, which could mean more sailing dates, itineraries, and booking flexibility in the coming seasons.

What It Means for Cruisers

Passengers interested in Egypt should know that Viking’s Nile ships tend to sell out given their small size and the destination’s popularity, so booking ahead remains wise. Those who have sailed with Viking on its ocean or European river itineraries can expect a similar level of consistency in design and service aboard the Nile fleet, including Viking Sekhmet.

As always with river cruising, travelers should factor in the flights and hotel stays bundled into the itinerary, since these add to the overall length and cost of the trip beyond the days spent aboard ship.
