Holland America Line to Grow to 12 Ships With P&O’s Arcadia in 2029

Holland America Line has announced that it will expand its fleet to 12 ships in 2029 with the addition of Arcadia, a Vista Class ship currently operated by sister brand P&O Cruises. The move is part of a broader reshuffling of ships within Carnival Corporation’s family of cruise lines.

Arcadia shares its design platform with several existing Holland America ships, including Oosterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam, meaning the transfer should feel like a natural fit for the line’s fleet and operations. According to Holland America Line, the addition will increase the brand’s overall guest capacity by more than 2,000 passengers and provide greater flexibility in how it deploys ships around the world.

Why Holland America Is Adding a Ship

Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, said the company continues to see strong demand from travelers looking for immersive experiences and what she described as “perfectly sized ships.” She framed the Arcadia addition as a way to welcome more guests without straying from what the brand is known for.

“Adding Arcadia allows us to welcome more guests while building on everything they already love about our brand,” Bodensteiner said, noting that the ship fits naturally alongside the line’s existing Vista Class vessels.

The timing also ties into Holland America Evolution, the cruise line’s multiyear initiative to refresh its ships with new restaurants, venues and staterooms, along with select features borrowed from its newer Pinnacle Class ships. Oosterdam is scheduled to begin its Evolution updates in fall 2027, with Zuiderdam following in April 2028. Holland America says specific plans for which venues and features Arcadia will receive are still being finalized and will be shared in the coming months.

What Happens to P&O Cruises

As Arcadia departs for Holland America Line, P&O Cruises will receive Queen Anne, currently sailing for Cunard, another Carnival Corporation brand. Queen Anne is a 3,000-passenger ship that will undergo design changes in 2029 so it aligns with the rest of the P&O Cruises fleet.

This kind of multi-brand ship swap is not unusual within large cruise corporations, which often reallocate vessels across sister brands to match capacity, itineraries and guest profiles with demand in different markets. For passengers loyal to P&O Cruises, it means Arcadia will eventually be replaced in the fleet by a ship coming over from Cunard, rather than the brand simply losing capacity.

What This Means for Passengers

For travelers who currently sail Arcadia under the P&O Cruises brand, the ship will continue operating as normal for the next several years before the transition in 2029. Once it joins Holland America Line, guests can expect it to be updated in line with the Evolution program, bringing it closer in style and amenities to the rest of the Vista Class fleet.

Holland America Line has indicated that more details about Arcadia’s refurbishment, along with updates on other Evolution ships, will be released over the coming months. Bodensteiner also hinted that this move is just one part of a longer-term plan, saying the company is looking at “the thoughtful consideration of newbuilds” as it continues investing in its fleet and guest experience.

For now, cruisers interested in either brand should know that current itineraries and ship assignments remain unaffected in the near term, with the actual transfer and rebranding not set to take place until 2029.
