Carnival Corporation Shuffles Fleet: Queen Anne Heads to P&O, Arcadia to Holland America

Carnival Corporation has announced a notable reshuffling of ships across three of its cruise brands. Cunard’s Queen Anne will move to P&O Cruises in 2029, while P&O’s Arcadia will transfer to Holland America Line the same year, according to a press release reported by Cruise Industry News and confirmed by Cruise Radio and Cruise Hive.

The changes won’t happen overnight. Queen Anne, which only entered Cunard service in May 2024, will continue sailing under the Cunard brand through the completion of her 2028-29 World Voyage. After that final world cruise as a Cunard ship, she will undergo what the company describes as an extensive reimagining, be renamed, and join the P&O fleet in May 2029.

Meanwhile, Arcadia will wrap up a farewell season with P&O Cruises on August 21, 2029, before moving over to Holland America Line later that year. There’s a bit of symmetry in this particular move: Arcadia was originally ordered by Holland America Line back in 2000, before being reassigned during construction and eventually entering service with P&O in 2005 as an adults-only ship.

Why Carnival Corporation Is Making the Switch

Paul Ludlow, president of Carnival UK, P&O Cruises and Cunard, explained that the decisions reflect “a careful, long-term view” of how each brand’s ships can best match guest demand. He said Queen Anne’s blend of contemporary design, flexible public spaces and varied dining options gives her “a natural affinity with the modern P&O Cruises holiday experience,” and that she will introduce a new class of ship to the P&O fleet once her transformation is complete.

Ludlow also noted that losing Queen Anne will actually help unify the remaining Cunard fleet around Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, three ships he says each have a strongly established identity tied to the brand’s traditional sense of occasion. He was clear that the move doesn’t signal any reduced commitment to Cunard, pointing to a major upgrade of flagship Queen Mary 2 due next year.

For Holland America Line, the addition of Arcadia grows the fleet to 12 ships and adds capacity for more than 2,000 guests. Holland America Line president Beth Bodensteiner said the move “supports our near-term growth while fitting alongside the company’s broader approach to modernization and future fleet expansion.”

What This Means for Passengers

Anyone with an existing Queen Anne or Arcadia booking before the respective transfer dates can expect their voyage to operate as planned under the current brand. P&O says details of Arcadia’s farewell season, along with its on-sale date, will be announced in due course. Cunard loyalists have until Queen Anne’s January 2029 World Voyage to sail aboard her one last time under the Cunard banner, with specific farewell celebrations yet to be confirmed.

Once she joins Holland America, Arcadia is expected to go through the line’s ongoing refurbishment program, which has already been adding new venues, restaurants and staterooms to sister ships. Specific plans for Arcadia’s venues haven’t been finalized yet, and neither has her future name, though Holland America has a long tradition of giving its ships Dutch names. It’s also not yet clear whether Arcadia will keep her adults-only status, since Holland America typically welcomes families across its fleet.

On the P&O side, guests can look forward to Queen Anne bringing a different style and scale of ship to the fleet once she’s reimagined, along with a new range of itineraries. Full details of her onboard experience and initial P&O sailings will be shared at a later date.

A Longer-Term Plan

Both brands frame the swap as part of broader fleet planning rather than a reaction to any single issue. For now, cruisers booked on either ship in the coming years have plenty of time to enjoy them under their current flags before the 2029 changeover, with more specifics expected as the transition dates approach.
