A Guide To Cruise Ship Bathrooms

Whether cruising for a short break or sailing around the world, you’re living on a ship at sea. So of course that means using bathrooms on the ship.

Aurora Suite Bathroom

If you’re a cruise newbie, you might want to know more. How many bathrooms are there? Are they similar to aeroplane bathrooms or more like the ones at home? And are they comfortable?

How many bathrooms are on a cruise ship?

The number of bathrooms on a cruise ship depends on the ship, but most ships will have around 1,000 to 2,000. There will be one private bathroom for every cabin on the ship, plus a number of public bathrooms on each deck.

The largest ship in the world, Icon of the Seas, has 2,854 bathrooms for guests.

Icon of the Seas
Icon of the Seas

Obviously, you can’t access all of those. But that breaks down as 2,805 private bathrooms in staterooms and suites, plus a further 49 bathrooms that I’ve counted on the deck plans for the ship.

That doesn’t include the number of bathrooms on the ship on the crew decks. So overall the ship will definitely have more than 3,000.

Smaller ships will have fewer bathrooms, obviously. They don’t have as many cabins, nor do they have as many decks where you’ll need public bathrooms.

Do all cruise ship rooms have private bathrooms?

Modern cruise ships always have private bathrooms for every single stateroom or cabin. Cruise ships used to have shared bathroom facilities, although first-class guests would have private bathrooms on some ships. But since the 1970s, all cruise ships have en-suite bathrooms.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when cruise ships introduced private bathrooms. But we do know that the Titanic had some, and when the Queen Mary launched for Cunard in 1936, around 60% of her cabins had a private bathroom.

It is believed that her sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2, was the first ship to have a private bathroom in every room.

QE2
QE2

That’s hard to verify, because it wasn’t a record that cruise lines were really shouting about. But it’s certainly one of the first major cruise ships to ensure that all guests had private toilets and shower or bath facilities.

How big are the bathrooms on a cruise ship?

The size of a cruise ship bathroom will vary depending on the ship and the room that you book. You can expect an average of between 25 and 30 square feet (2.3 to 2.8 square metres). Suite bathrooms, or luxury ships, may have larger bathrooms.

In most cases, the bathrooms are pretty small. Don’t expect to be able to swing your toiletry bag around!

Bathroom on Ambassador Ambition
Small bathroom on Ambassador Ambition

For most people, this is not a problem. But you might find it uncomfortable if you’re a larger person, especially if the shower has a door rather than a curtain. Some people struggle to fit inside.

If you’re concerned that might be the case for you, you can do one of three things:

  1. Upgrade your cruise to a stateroom with a larger bathroom, or a ship that is more luxurious.
  2. Leave the shower door open and put down extra towels on the floor to soak up the water.
  3. Check the size of the bathrooms in the fitness suite or spa, and see if they’re more comfortable to use.

What does a split bathroom on a cruise mean?

A split bathroom on a cruise ship is where the stateroom essentially has two bathrooms: one with a shower or bath with a sink, and one with a toilet and sink. They’re designed to make getting ready easier, so one guest can use the toilet while another is showering.

Split bathrooms are not too common, and are typically used for families. After all, how many times has a child suddenly decided they need the toilet, just when it isn’t convenient? Having the toilet elsewhere, so they can use it while you’re showering, is a huge bonus.

Which cruise lines have split bathrooms?

Not many cruise lines have split bathrooms. You’ll find them on Disney Cruise Line ships, and there are some on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, specifically in the Family Infinity Balcony staterooms.

The family river cruise ship, A-Rosa Sena, also has split bathrooms in the family cabins on Deck 1. As you can see below, there are two sinks and a shower in one side, and a toilet and sink in the other.

If you like the idea of a split bathroom, some ships have two full bathrooms in the cabin if you choose the largest suites. But you can expect to pay a premium for these rooms.

How do you shower on a cruise ship?

Most cruise ship bathrooms will have a shower cubicle/stall, although some will have a bathtub with a shower system. Most showers on cruise ships do have a handheld attachment, but check as there some cruise ships may only have a fixed shower head.

Bathroom bathtub with shower

Cruise ships have a pressurised water system that works quite well, so complaints about shower pressure are few. In fact, I’ve read some forum posts where people describe returning home and realising how bad their own shower is!

Showering is typically fine on a cruise, but if you’re a larger person then consider upgrading to a room with a larger bathroom if you can.

Are there outlets in cruise ship bathrooms?

It’s not always the case, but most cruise ships have a low-voltage power outlet designed for use with electric shavers, although they will also accept electric toothbrush chargers. They have a low amperage circuit for safety, so often can’t be used with hair dryers or other high-powered devices.

Outlets in cruise ship bathrooms

These outlets are the same as you’d find in a typical hotel bathroom. They’re special outlets that you should only use with a shaver or toothbrush. For safety reasons, they’re not powerful enough for most of your other devices.

Do cruise ship bathrooms have hair dryers?

Most cruise cabins will be equipped with a hair dryer, but they are not usually found in cruise ship bathrooms. Instead, they’re located in the main cabin. They will sometimes be hidden in a drawer at the desk area, either plugged into an outlet or hard-wired into the ship’s electrics.

Disney Magic (bathroom pictured below) has a hair dryer in the bathroom. But as it’s over 20 years old, it doesn’t work that well, so you also get a modern hair dryer in a drawer in the bedroom.

Disney Magic bathroom
Bathroom on Disney Magic

These hair dryers aren’t designed to work on low-voltage outlets in the bathroom, so don’t try to move them. But if you need some time to dry your hair, it’s a good excuse to shower first, so you can dry your hair in the main cabin while your partner is showering.

Some older cruise ships might not be equipped with hair dryers. If you need one, check your ship before you sail. You can usually bring your own.

Do cruise ships have toilet paper?

Cruise ships do provide toilet paper in private and public bathrooms, but it’s often thin low-quality paper, designed to ensure there are no blockages in the vacuum system.

Toilet paper inside cruise ship bathroom

Don’t try to bring your own toilet paper with you, unless you’re happy putting it in the waste bin. If you flush thicker toilet paper and it causes a blockage, you could be liable for any costs incurred in repairing it. So while the provided toilet paper isn’t the best, you’ll need to get used to it for the duration of your cruise.

If it’s a serious issue for you, hopefully you’ll enjoy better quality toilet paper when you visit bathrooms on a port of call. But that might not be the case either.

Most cruise ships also provide facial tissues as well as toilet paper. You can use this if you have a particularly sensitive behind.

The toilet paper in your private bathroom will be replenished by your room steward, whenever they attend to your room. If you find that you’re running out more frequently, just ask your steward to leave extra.

What toiletries are provided on a cruise?

Typically in a cruise ship bathroom, you can expect to be provided with shampoo and soap. You may also find shower caps, hair conditioner and some body lotion as well.

You’ll need to bring your own toothpaste, shaving foam and any other basics you need.

Bathroom essentials on a cruise
L’Occitane toiletries on a river cruise

On some ships, you may find upgraded toiletries in the suites as a perk of booking a higher class of accommodation. Usually, this only refers to the brand of the toiletries, rather than being provided with a wider range.

You might find that some luxury cruise lines do provide extra touches such as cotton balls, sunscreen and even bath salts, but these are rare.

Do you need to bring bath towels on a cruise?

You don’t need to provide your own bath towels on a cruise ship. The cruise line will provide all towels that you need for your cruise. These include hand towels, bath towels and even pool towels (these will be a different colour to the standard towels, which are usually white).

If you want your towels to be changed, just leave them on the floor of the bathroom. Your cabin steward will then swap them out with a fresh set for you.

If you’re lucky, they might even make a towel animal for you! This usually depends on the ship and whether you’re travelling with family.

Cruise Mummy holding a towel animal

Towel animals have become less common in recent years. It’s believed they’re less environmentally friendly, since they usually need more than one fresh towel to be supplied. Also, since the pandemic, some people may not want stewards touching towels more than necessary.

Are there disabled bathrooms on cruise ships?

All cruise ships have disabled bathrooms. These include public bathrooms designed for people with accessibility needs, and a selection of disabled-access staterooms that have special bathroom facilities.

The facilities in a wheelchair-accessible cabin will vary. Some ships will have two types of cabins for disabled people: one which is just a little larger, and one with a proper wet room. Make sure you book the right one for your needs.

Be aware that public disabled bathrooms are also where you’ll tend to find baby-changing stations. So you might have to wait to use a bathroom in a public area, if someone is using it to change a baby’s nappy.

Where do service dogs go to the bathroom on a cruise ship?

Cruise ships will typically have a special relief station for service dogs. This may be on a promenade deck, or in an area reserved for crew only. It will always be in a quieter area of the ship, away from most guests.

Dogs are usually only permitted on a cruise ship if they are a service dog for a registered disability. Guests with service dogs are advised to speak to the crew when they board, to find out where the dog needs to be taken.

What happens when you use the bathroom on a cruise ship?

Cruise ship toilets use a vacuum system to remove your waste from the toilet, rather than forcing water down via a water flush system. The waste is treated and mostly broken down into water, which is treated until considered safe then released into the ocean.

Most toilets at home use water to flush waste down, but to get the right pressure in a ship that is many decks high would be difficult, so vacuum suction is used instead.

The toilet flush is usually behind the toilet lid. That’s because you should always flush it with the lid down, to help with the suction and make sure bacteria isn’t sprayed into the bathroom. Also, it’s really important to make sure sanitary items are disposed of in the bins, not the toilet, or they will clog the system.

Bin inside cruise ship bathroom

Do cruise ship toilets have water in them?

Cruise ship toilets do have water in them, although water isn’t used for the flushing mechanism. It just helps to keep the toilet clean when waste is sucked through the system.

Seawater is not used, because the salt would be corrosive to the plumbing system, but it does start out as seawater. Cruise ships have a desalination plant that takes seawater, removes the salt then turns it into fresh water to use in the plumbing system.

Where does the toilet waste go on a cruise ship?

After you flush the toilet on a cruise ship, the waste is sucked into a treatment facility. It passes through a filter, removing any solids that can’t be broken down. The remaining water is treated for bacteria and sterilised through multiple steps, before being released into the ocean.

Arguably, the wastewater that cruise ships release into the seas – treated from toilets, showers, laundry and more – is typically cleaner than the actual ocean water. There are some hefty regulations in place to make sure ships are properly treating their wastewater.

Can you drink water from a cruise ship bathroom?

You can drink water from the taps in your cruise ship bathroom. It will have been treated to make sure it is safe. It may be a little warmer than you’d like, but there are water dispensers around the ship if you want to refill a water bottle instead.

It’s perfectly fine for drinking a glass of water at night if you’re feeling dehydrated. But don’t expect super-cold, super-fresh water from the taps.

Final word

There you have it – everything you need to know about cruise ship bathrooms. Simply put, they’ll have all the basics you need. And there are always public bathrooms on most decks, so you don’t always need to trek back to your room.

They’re not ideal – the shower size in particular can be a little limiting in basic cabins – but you can always upgrade your room if a spacious bathroom is really important to you.

Bodrum Cruise Port and Marella Cruises Launch Environmental and Educational Initiative

Bodrum Cruise Port and Marella Cruises have launched a joint social responsibility project aimed at promoting environmental conservation and maritime education.

Marella cruise ship travelling the sea

The initiative began with a beach clean-up at Giritli Teyze Beach, where secondary school students collaborated with the crew of the Marella Discovery to improve the local environment.

This event marked the beginning of a series of activities designed to engage the community and raise environmental awareness.

After the clean-up, students participated in an educational tour at Bodrum Cruise Port. The tour offered insights into the operations of the marina, customs-controlled areas, and the functions of passport and customs authorities.

Students also learnt about the role of Pilot Captains, and they were lucky enough to be given a tour of the Marella Discovery, gaining firsthand experience of maritime life.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Bodrum Cruise Port as Marella Discovery joins local students in a beach cleanup at Giritli Teyze Beach. This event not only supports the coastal environment but also provides students with insight into various roles and a tour of Marella Discovery. We look forward to many more community activities like this in Bodrum in the future.”

Olivia Wells, Sustainability Manager at Marella Cruises

In collaboration with the Coast Guard Command and Atilla Suyolcu, president of Bodrum Sea Rescue, participants received a presentation on the “Yaşam” sea ambulance and emergency response operations at sea.

This session provided an in-depth understanding of maritime rescue operations within Bodrum, highlighting the essential role of emergency services in ensuring safety at sea.

This initiative demonstrates a commitment to fostering a sustainable future and enhancing awareness of maritime operations and conservation among young people.

Bodrum Cruise Port and Marella Cruises plan to continue their collaboration, with future community activities and educational initiatives aimed at furthering environmental stewardship and maritime education.

Disney Treasure Rescues Four from Sinking Catamaran Off Bermuda Coast

The brand new cruise ship Disney Treasure has already been called into action to rescue stranded people at sea, even before her first official sailing for the cruise line!

Disney Treasure Catamaran Rescue

The ship successfully conducted a rescue operation on 10th November 2024, saving four individuals from a sinking catamaran named Serenity.

The incident took place approximately 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda when the catamaran began taking on water due to a gasket failure in the escape hatch.

After receiving a distress call, the US Coast Guard coordinated with nearby vessels to provide immediate assistance.

Disney Treasure, positioned about 70 nautical miles from the scene, responded swiftly. The crew deployed an onboard lifeboat and successfully rescued all four individuals without injury.

“We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril,

“Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety,”

Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara

Following the rescue, the Disney Treasure’s crew provided medical attention and essential supplies to the rescued individuals, whose identities haven’t been revealed.

The ship then continued its transatlantic crossing to Port Canaveral, Florida, where it was expected to arrive on 12th November 2024, just over a month before her inaugural sailing.

The next few weeks are the final stages of preparation for the cruise ship before she welcomes her first guests – or at least, after this incident, her first paying guests!

Features onboard will now undergo final testing as the last few crew members also arrive to begin their contracts. Several crew members will have already spent time on the ship for her transatlantic crossing as they are trained on the onboard features.

Disney Treasure will set sail for her debut cruise on 21st December 2024.

12 Best Things to Do in Key West on a Cruise

Will your next cruise vacation or land vacation take you to beautiful Key West? If so, you may be wondering what you should do while your ship is in port. The possibilities are endless and more than one trip to this beautiful paradise is needed.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Cruise ship docked in Key West

The first time that I had the pleasure of visiting Key West, I was overwhelmed in the most wonderful way. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I just knew that I wanted to see and experience everything.

It doesn’t matter if you are a Key West newbie or experienced visitor, you might need some suggestions for your next visit. Keep reading for 12 of the best things to do in Key West while on a cruise.

1. Make the Trek to the Southernmost point

When visiting Key West, you might as well go as far south as possible, right? If that is your thought process, don’t miss a trip to the southernmost point.

Most have seen photos of the southernmost point buoy. It’s practically a rite of passage to visit the buoy and have your photo taken. While you are here, you are a mere 90 miles from Cuba.

Is this a tourist trap? Of course. Will you be waiting in line a while to have your photo taken? You better believe it!

2. Visit the Hemingway Home and Museum

Hemingway House Key West

It was practically unheard of to have an inground pool in Key West in the 1930’s. You’ll find that here and other luxuries of the legend, Ernest Hemingway.

The most unique element of the home is the presence of the six-toed cats. Ernest Hemingway was gifted a six-toed cat by a sea captain. The cats that live at the home today are descendants of the original pet of Hemingway.

To be fair, I cannot stand cats and six-toed cats sound like something out of an 80’s sci-fi film. But guess what? These cats guard the legacy of Hemingway and all things “Old Man and the Sea”.

3. Check out Captain Tony’s Saloon

If you want to indulge in a few drinks and eats where past local celebrities liked to hang out, be sure to visit Captain Tony’s Saloon. This location was originally built in 1851 and served as an icehouse. In fact, the icehouse doubled as the local morgue and is supposedly haunted.

Grab a pint and sit in the same spot as Jimmy Buffet, Truman Capote, Ernest Hemingway, and Tennessee Williams once sat. Don’t forget to pick up your very own Captain Tony’s Saloon t-shirt’s, books, koozies, and more.

I personally think this is the perfect dive bar for reasonably-priced, potent drinks. Pair a beverage and the chance at seeing a ghost. What more could you need?

4. Stroll Down Duval Street

Duval St Key West

The “key” to Key West’s party scene is Duval Street. This street is a mile long and was named after the first territorial governor of Florida, William Duval.

You can find almost anything on Duval Street. Souvenir shops are plentiful and local restaurants line this area with an abundance of choices. The world famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar is here and other favorites like Green Parrot Bar and Cowboy Bill’s Honkey Tonk Saloon.

Of course, there are plenty of options besides bars on Duval Street. A yearly Key West Food & Wine Festival is held here, amongst other events. We definitely recommend using the Old Town Trolley while visiting. This is a great hop-on, hop-off option for seeing Duval Street.

It’s pretty much a guarantee that you will not see the same sights twice on Duval Street. I remember wandering down Duval Street thinking, “This may be the funkiest and coolest street, this side of NOLA”.

5. Explore Mallory Square

At the center of Key West’s social scene, you will find Mallory Square. Surrounded by local merchants, restaurants, and museums, Mallory Square is an open-air plaza adjacent to the beautiful Key West waters.

There is truly something for everyone in Mallory Square. Check out a cup of specialty coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen or grab a bite to eat at Aqua D’Keys. If you have the chance to stay later in the day, sunsets are unforgettable here.

Wandering out to Mallory Square while visiting the shops is an incredible experience. Some of my best vacation photos were taken here and I cannot wait to return.

6. Take a Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park Fort Jefferson

For longer trips to Key West, visiting the Dry Tortugas National Park should be at the top of most lists. Located 70 miles to the west, this 100 square mile park is truly paradise.

You will need to ride a ferry to explore this oasis. It takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to get to the park. You can explore Fort Jefferson, snorkel, or visit pristine beaches.

I”m not sure that there is a more beautiful beach in the United States. The water is a color of blue like no other and the snorkeling cannot be beat. My husband loves to snorkel and this would be first thing on his list for our next visit.

7. Grab Drinks at Sloppy Joe’s

The first word that comes to my mind when thinking of Sloppy Joe’s is “iconic”. Just passing by this bar makes me feel like I might run into Ernest Hemingway and join him for a beer. Visit Sloppy Joe’s in July, and you might see the yearly Hemingway Look-Alike Contest.

Music lovers will love spending time here. There is live music every single day of the year. Don’t leave without a souvenir t-shirt to remember this truly unique experience by.

Do not leave Key West without trying the award winning Sloppy Rita – Cazadores Reposado Tequila, Citronage, sour mix, orange juice, club soda, and lime. It is literally perfection in a glass.

8. Visit the Key West Cemetery

For something a little off the beaten path, take a trip to the Key West Cemetery. This historical cemetery was established in 1847 and is located at the corner of Margaret and Angela Streets. The cemetery is nineteen acres and the final resting place for a diverse group of citizens.

If you want to visit the cemetery, there are maps available at the entrance. Horror movie lovers like myself might be tempted to try a Ghosts & Gravestones Tour. I’m always up for a good ghost tour and Key West is no exception.

9. Take an Old Town Trolley Tour

For an easy and convenient way to see Key West, the Old Town Trolley Tour is a fantastic option. They offer a Hop-On, Hop-Off tour that features 13 different stops. After the purchase of a ticket, you can stop and return to the bus anytime that day.

A few of the possible stops for this tour include Mallory Square, Truman Little White House, Duval Street, Bahama Village, East Martello Fort, and the Southernmost Point.

For my family, an Old Town Trolley Tour is a must. We can “hop on” and “hop off” as much as we’d like, without having to worry about paying each individual time. Look into purchasing your tickets ahead of time for additional perks and discounts.

10. Stop by Blue Heaven for Lunch

Blue Heaven is a local favorite serving some of the tastiest, freshest food around. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations are an option for dinner only. The atmosphere is incredibly authentic here. Art in the form of a leopard-spotted mannequin is the norm.

Variety is key at Blue Heaven. The Caribbean “BBQ” Shrimp is a favorite, as is the Famous Key Lime Pie.

Personally, I think Blue Heaven has one of the best vibes anywhere. If you look in the dictionary for “Blue Heaven Key West”, you are likely to see the phrase, “Key West charm and deliciousness”.

11. Pick Out a Perfect Pair of Soles at Kino Sandals

A real treat awaits those who decide to visit Kino Sandals. Since 1966, this Key West establishment has provided the best in handmade leather sandals, created by Roberto “Kino” Lopez himself. Kino moved to Key West from Cuba in the 60’s and along with his wife, created a lasting Key West tradition.

You can visit the store and choose from over 17 different styles of sandals. Plan some extra time for this stop and you may be able to see the artisans crafting the sandals.

For the price and the craftsmanship, Kino Sandals are hard to compete with. I am personally a fan of the “Thin Strap” design in the Ladies line. I cannot wait to add another pair to my shoe collection. My husband doesn’t need to know that.

12. Catch a World-Famous Sunset

Sunsets in Key West are “World Famous” for a reason. They are arguably some of the most beautiful you will ever experience. Visitors will make their way to Mallory Square 1 or 2 hours before the event. Definitely plan to watch the sunset from Mallory Square or on one of several sunset cruises.

A sunset in Key West is something that will live on in your memory forever. For me, it is right up there with the first “Hairy Chest Contest” I witnessed on the Carnival Fantasy.

Hopefully our extensive list will help you to plan your next Key West stop. The possibilities are limitless and there is something for everyone. What do you plan to do on your next trip to Key West?

Disney Treasure To Get 7 New Cruise Horn Melodies

Disney Cruise Line will feature seven new cruise horn melodies when she starts sailing for the cruise line from December 2024.

Disney Treasure Horn

Disney Cruise Line ships have long been renowned for their cruise horns, with even the oldest ships in the fleet known for playing “When You Wish Upon A Star”.

Newer ships have introduced more songs, but it’s been announced that Disney Treasure will get seven completely new ones for the cruise fleet.

Only three have been announced so far, including “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and “Remember Me” from Coco.

The other song announced is “Grim Grinning Ghosts”, the popular song from the Haunted Mansion rides at Disney theme parks. The ship will have a Haunted Mansion Parlor onboard too.

It also seems like existing songs will be enhanced with new chords as part of the new horn array.

You can hear a little teaser in this video:

Excitement building for new ship

Disney Treasure will offer way more than just some new cruise horn melodies when she officially joins the fleet in December.

Dining highlights will include an immersive Coco-themed restaurant and Worlds of Marvel, including two distinct nights of “heroic dining”.

What To Wear On A Virgin Voyages Cruise

Virgin Voyages is not the same as every other cruise line. There are a lot of things they like to do differently, including their dress code.

Me on Scarlet Lady

In this guide, I’ll take you through the dress code for your Virgin Voyages sailing, and let you know what else you might want to pack.

What is the dress code on Virgin Voyages?

There is no formal dress code for Virgin Voyages, other than not turning up to restaurants in a bathing suit or flip-flops. Guests are encouraged to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, provided it is a full outfit with shoes.

This is very different from a number of cruise lines. Some will put a smart casual dress code in place for restaurants, asking you to avoid wearing T-shirts and shorts to sit-down meals. Of course, many cruise lines don’t enforce it, but most guests feel obliged to follow it.

Virgin Voyages’ own policy is that “your casual threads are probably nice enough to pass for dinner in any eatery.” So you’re encouraged to wear whatever you wish in the restaurants.

The only request is to turn up in a full outfit with some form of shoes on. Don’t walk into the restaurants straight from the pool, while you’re dripping wet and either barefooted or wearing flip-flops.

This policy is the same on all four ships in the fleet: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady.

Is there a formal night on Virgin Voyages?

There is no formal night on Virgin Voyages. Guests are welcome to wear their casual clothing to restaurants on every night of their cruise. There are some themed nights, but these are optional. The theme applies to the parties after dinner, rather than the restaurants themselves.

If you’re intimidated by the formality of cruises, you don’t need to be. Most cruise lines these days are very relaxed. There are always restaurants and bars you can go to where the dress code is not being followed.

Virgin Voyages takes this one step further, by getting rid of formal nights altogether. There’s no pressure at all to avoid parts of the ship if you want to stay in your casual clothing. You can wear what you like (within reason) on every night of the cruise.

Do people dress up on Virgin Voyages?

A lot of people still choose to dress up on their Virgin Voyages cruises. Instead of formal suits and dresses, it tends to be what you’d wear to dinner on a typical vacation or a nightclub outfit: smart casual, with a splash of colour to impress.

Some people do go all-out, but more for the themed nights and not just for dinner. So trust me, you can wear any casual outfit and you won’t stand out.

Theme nights

Instead of formal nights, Virgin Voyages has themed nights. These are advertised as taking place on every sailing, but if you book a short cruise, they may not be available.

You can check in advance by downloading the Sailor App before you sail. This will show you the entertainment schedule for your cruise.

Pyjama Party

Typically held on the first night of a cruise, the pyjama party is exactly how it sounds. Get out onto the pool deck and dance around in your cosiest PJs!

Don’t take your best set – you’re likely to get hot and sweaty under the evening sun as you dance around, so you don’t want to spoil them. Maybe pack an extra set just for the PJ night.

To be clear: this is a full-blown party, not a ‘typical’ pyjama party where you relax and watch movies. Don’t come expecting a quiet event!

Scarlet Night

Scarlet Night is the big night on your cruise. It’s often held on the second-last night, but that can vary, so check the Sailor App for details when you’ve booked.

This is all about wearing red. Either a full red outfit or just a splash of red will do. And don’t worry if you don’t own anything red – you’ll still be allowed to join the party!

Check out this video to see what you can expect on Scarlet Night…

Secret Party

Sometimes, Virgin Voyages hosts secret parties that are invite-only. There’s not a lot of detail about these online, as they’re very hush-hush!

The way to get an invite is to be noticed by the crew. If you like the idea of an exclusive event, take your most striking outfits and make sure you’re the life of the party.

Other outfits to pack for a Virgin Voyages cruise

Here’s a quick checklist of some other outfits to remember for your Virgin Voyages cruise.

Swimwear

Many people want to look their best during the day on a Virgin Voyages cruise, so don’t forget your chic swimwear. Again, wear what makes you comfortable, but a lot of people like to dress to impress.

80s workout gear

Virgin Voyages sailings have a lot of fitness classes that you can sign up for. So if you’re interested, pack your gym gear. A fun one is the retro 80s workout. Some people bring their own 80s workout outfit especially for this, so feel free to join in.

No swimwear?

At The Perch on your Virgin ship, topless sunbathing is permitted. If you don’t want tan lines, this is the place to go!

Virgin Voyages The Perch

Final word

You don’t need to worry about a formal dress code for Virgin Voyages. But there is still a checklist of things to pack, including something red and your PJs for those fun-packed party nights.

Overall, Virgin Voyages is a relaxed cruise line where adults can let their hair down. If for you that involves glamming up, then go for it. But if you just want to wear a nice T-shirt and jeans, that’s totally fine too.

You should also consider other things like the weather, the destinations you’re visiting and the activities you plan to do on board. For more info, be sure to check out my Ultimate Guide To What To Wear On A Cruise.
