Exactly How Do Cruise Ships Get Into The Water?

Cruise ships are epic, magnificent feats of engineering. But how are such incredible ships, which are often huge, launched in the first place?

MSC Meraviglia cruise ship in the water

You might’ve wondered this when standing atop a deck of the biggest ships on the ocean, or you might just have an interest in shipbuilding.

In this guide, I’ll explain the different ways that ships can be launched, and which method is primarily used for cruise ships.

The different ways ships can be launched…

There are four main ways that ships can be launched into the water. Two of those only really apply to smaller ships, though.

1. Mechanical launching

Mechanical launching involves using a crane to lift a boat or small ship, and then move it into the water. Imagine trying to do this with a cruise ship!

Mechanical launching method

2. Air bag launches

Some boats and small ships are launched by placing air bags underneath, inflating them, and then using that cushion of air to slide a ship into the water.

air bag ship launch

The two methods above aren’t possible with most cruise ships. There’s not a crane in the world that could lift a completed cruise ship, nor can airbags lift that much weight.

3. Gravitational launching

Gravitational launching is a method used for cruise ship-sized vessels, but not really with actual cruise ships these days.

gravitational launching

This method involves transporting the ship to the side of the water, if that wasn’t where it was built, and then using sliders to slide the ship into the water at the side.

The momentum causes the entire ship to plunge into the water, before it rights itself just in time to avoid taking water on from the top deck.

It’s messy and dramatic, and it risks damage to the ship because of the pressure placed on it by the sudden force of water.

It looks cool on YouTube videos, though.

4. Floating out

The fourth method is possibly the most boring, but it is by far the most sensible for cruise ships. Cruise ships are ‘floated out’.

World Dream cruise ship floating out

How floating out works

Cruise ships are launched into the water using the float out technique. This means the cruise ship is built in a special dry dock – an open dock area which has been drained. Once the ship is ready, the dock is flooded with sea water and the ship simply floats out.

cruise ship launched into the water

While the actual launching of the ship is therefore low on drama, it’s often accompanied by a lot of pomp – cruise ships are expensive and so cruise lines like to celebrate each stage of their building journey.

Here’s an example from when Disney Wish was floated out – it’s Disney, so of course there are multiple sets of fireworks:

In terms of the safety of the ship, floating a ship out really is the best way. The ship is just positioned on a dry space and then, once that dock is flooded, it naturally begins to float. There’s no risk of waves crashing against it, or shock forces. The supports holding the cruise ship upright don’t move, and the ship just naturally raises from them.

Icon of the Seas under construction

Obviously, for this type of launch to work, you need a lot of space, and so dry docks are limited to just a handful of shipyard locations around the world.

Here’s a look at the biggest ship in the world, Icon of the Seas, floating out for the first time. It involved 219 million litres of water, which took 9 hours to fill the dock.

Cruise ship float outs, step-by-step

Here’s a quick run-down of how cruise ship float outs work.

  1. Cruise ships are built in a large dry dock, using support structures to make sure they stay upright. It’s always interesting to see photos of a cruise ship out of water – it doesn’t look right.
  2. Once the outer shell is completed and the ship is judged to be sea-ready, the float out begins.
  3. The dock is flooded using seawater. This is a slow process that is often done overnight.
  4. Once the dock is flooded, the ship will begin to float.
  5. The ship is then dragged into position, often out of the hangar where it was built, using tugboats. The ship’s engines are not usually used at this stage.
  6. Once the ship is in the new correct position for construction to continue, it is anchored and secured in place.

Construction will then carry on until the ship is almost ready for passengers. She’ll then be sent on sea trials while final fixtures are added.

That’s the practical side of a float out, but there may be other ceremonial steps involved too. Again, this is seen as quite the important stage in a cruise ship’s life.

So often, speeches will be given by the CEO of the cruise line, or another senior staff member. The ship’s godmother may also be present, and a bottle of Champagne may be smashed against the hull. This will be repeated at the naming ceremony too.

smashing a champagne bottle

Depending on the ship and the stage of the build, the senior dignitaries may take in the float out from the dock at the side of the ship, or they may board and witness it from the current top deck.

Cruise ships are often finished off in the water

The initial steps of a cruise ship build don’t happen in the water. They happen in a dry dock, which has been drained. Once the exterior of the ship is complete and the ship can be floated, the dock will be flooded, the ship floated out, and construction will continue.

cruise ship in a dry dock

So, ships are partially built while they’re in the water. It may be that the ship needs to be moved to a new location to fit specialist features, or it just has to be outdoors to allow for larger works to be carried out on the ship.

This means that ships are typically floated out as soon as they’re ready. The dry docks will have limited space for just the shell of the ship, and when that is intact and seaworthy, the ship is floated into a bigger area to make it easier to fit the ship with the next building blocks.

Read more: How Long Does It Take To Build A Cruise Ship?

Once a ship has been floated out, it will stay in the water almost permanently. The only difference is when she may need to undergo extensive repairs or renovations, such as Royal Caribbean’s Amplification Program.

When this happens, she’ll return to the shipyard for another dry dock. She’ll be positioned above support structures, and the water will be slowly drained until the ship is sitting on dry land.

The repair work will be carried out, and then the dock will be flooded again, ready for the ship to float out and resume service.

Final word

The process of launching a cruise ship is not so dramatic compared to some other large ship launches. Float outs are quite complex, and they require a dedicated space large enough to house the whole ship – which is why other large ships still stick with the gravitational launches.

The floating out process keeps the cruise ship in perfect condition, with no risk of damage, meaning these incredible investments that cost hundreds of millions of dollars (or into the low billions) are properly looked after and kept pristine for their first guests.

7 Common Cruise Ship Deck Names (And Why They’re Called That)

Are you ready to set sail on a cruise adventure, but feeling a bit confused or overwhelmed by all the deck names?

cruise ship decks

Don’t worry, I’m here to help! From the Sun Deck to the Riviera Deck, each deck on a cruise ship has its own unique name and purpose.

But why are they called what they’re called, and what can you expect to find on each one?

me with cruise ship - Saga Spirit of Discovery

1. Sun Deck

The Sun Deck is typically the highest deck on a cruise ship. It’s used for sunbathing, lounging, and enjoying the panoramic views of the ocean. It’s called the Sun Deck because it’s the best place to soak up the sun!

2. Lido Deck

The Lido Deck is usually the main outdoor deck on a cruise ship, and is home to the ship’s pools, hot tubs, and outdoor bars. Sometimes, people just call this the ‘pool deck’.

Lido is a fancy word for ‘outdoor pool’. But did you know that the word ‘lido’ comes from the name of the Lido di Venezia district in Venice, Italy? The town is an island and its name comes from the Latin word ‘litus’, ‘meaning shore’.

3. Sports Deck

This deck is usually located near the top of the ship towards the aft. It’s used for sports and fitness activities like basketball, golf nets and the jogging track. It’s called the Sports Deck because it’s where you’ll find all of the ship’s sports facilities.

Most cruise ships have outdoor sports courts, but some do have indoor sports halls instead.

4. Promenade Deck

The Promenade Deck (or Prom Deck for short) is a wide, outdoor deck that wraps around the entire ship. It’s used for strolling and enjoying the ocean views. It’s called the Promenade Deck because promenade is a word meaning ‘walk’.

Promenade deck on Borealis
Promenade Deck on Borealis

Not all cruise ships have promenade decks, and even when they do, they don’t always wrap all the way around the ship.

One of the best promenade decks can be found on P&O Cruises ships, Iona and Arvia. These ones each have eight whirlpool jacuzzis on them, as well as an outdoor bar, dining areas, lots of sun loungers and some of the most controversial balcony cabin designs.

Walking around the Promenade Deck on Arvia
Walking around the Promenade Deck on Arvia

5. Bridge Deck

The Bridge Deck is the deck where the ship’s bridge is located. The bridge is usually off-limits to passengers unless you’re lucky enough to book a behind-the-scenes ship tour.

The term ‘Bridge Deck’ isn’t used all that much in reality. While it refers to the deck from which the ship’s captain and crew navigate the ship, that’s just the front section. The rest of the deck is just a normal deck and usually has cabins on it.

Bridge on Anthem of the Seas

6. Landing Deck

This is the deck that you use to get on and off a cruise ship. However, it’s not always the same deck!

Depending on the tides, a ship may sit higher or lower in relation to the dock at different times. At some ports, the gangway will be open and quite short, whereas at others it will be a long closed tunnel that takes you into the terminal building.

So some days you may disembark from Deck 3 and on other days you may disembark from Deck 5. In the photo below, you can see that you can get on and off the ship on two different decks.

Landing Decks on Ventura

7. Poop Deck

Modern cruise ships don’t have poop decks, but I’m including it here because people often wonder what it is! And no, it’s nothing to do with actual poop!

A “poop deck” is a term that was commonly used in the past to refer to a deck that’s located at the aft (rear) of a ship, above the main deck. The poop deck was typically used by the ship’s officers as a high point for observation and navigation.

Poop Deck

BrokenSphere, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

As for why it’s called a “poop” deck, there are a few theories. One theory is that the term comes from the French word “la poupe,” which means stern or rear.

Another theory is that it comes from the Latin word “puppis,” which also means stern.

However, there is also a more humorous theory that the name comes from the fact that the deck was located at the rear of the ship, where the smell of the ship’s waste (or “poop”) would be carried away by the wind. While this theory is not supported by historical evidence, it has become a popular explanation for the name.

Read more about poop decks.

Other deck names

Cruise ship decks typically have numbers, but some decks also have names. These names are specific to the ship and each has its own meaning.

For example, on MSC Grandiosa, the decks are named after famous artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, whereas on Costa Deliziosa the decks are named after ornamental flowers such as Petunia and Azalea.

There are some deck names that are common across several different ships. These include:

  • Riviera Deck
  • Sky Deck
  • Atlantic Deck
  • Empress Deck
  • Marina Deck
  • Vista Deck
  • Panorama Deck

However, these names don’t particularly mean anything more than the obvious. The Sky Deck is likely to be the top deck, the Vista Deck or Panorama Deck will have great views and so on.

When it comes to choosing your cabin, the deck that you pick definitely matters and some decks are much better than others.

To find out which decks you should avoid for cabins on a cruise ship, be sure to read my guide to The Best and Worst Decks on Cruise Ships. This will help you to avoid any noisy locations or those that might make you feel particularly seasick.

  • Price: $1398
  • The Downside: The bike might feel a little underpowered for large riders (those above 250lbs)

Juiced CrossCurrent S2

Juice CrossCurrent S2 is best known for its speed and power. With a 52V battery and a rear motor hub 750W, the bike can quickly shoot up to 20mph. It’s faster than most e-bikes, which are capped at 20mph.

The bike also boasts 65 plus mile range.

  • Price: $1,599
  • The Downside: It’s narrower than what you’d prefer for a commuter bike

Rad Power RadRunner

RadRunner has been designed to accommodate a wider range of riders’ heights (from 4 ’11’’ to 6′ 2”).

It also features a low step-over frame, which makes it ideal for shorter people. We recommend it if you’re planning to get a bike you can share with your spouse.

  1. Price: $1, 499
  2. The Downside: It’s a bit heavy (at 65lbs)

Ride1UP

Ride1UP strikes the perfect balance between reasonable pricing and quality. Majority of its parts are assembled from some of the world’s top brands, including Samsung, Shimano, and Bafang Motor.

The suspension front fork, hydraulic disc brands, and the thick 2.4” wide tires make the bike smooth and comfortable.

  • Price: $1,695
  • The Downside: The battery runs out quickly when riding it at its top speed (28mph).

Conclusion

With this guide, nothing stops you from hitting the trails with your 80V e-bike. Go through the collection and choose the best e-bike for your next travel adventure

Essential Tips For First-Time Superyacht Buyers

There’s a first time for everything. And your first time buying a superyacht should be an exhilarating experience, not a series of confusing choices or frustrating challenges. This comprehensive guide will give you a peek at the complex world of superyacht purchasing, empowering you to navigate it with confidence.

Understanding The Market

The superyacht market is a diverse and complex landscape. There’s a seemingly endless list of factors to consider: the yacht’s size, features, the manufacturer, and the current market trends. Therefore, immersing yourself in this world is crucial. Attend boat shows and yacht club meetings, and cultivate a network of yacht enthusiasts who can help you understand the market.

Superyacht brokers are typically divided into two main types: sales brokers and charter brokers. Sales brokers focus on facilitating the purchase and sale of superyachts, handling various responsibilities such as identifying potential buyers, negotiating the best prices, arranging surveys and sea trials to assess the yacht’s condition, overseeing contract agreements, and managing the necessary documentation for a smooth transaction. Simpson Superyachts’ guide for buying your first superyacht offers essential insights to help you navigate these options and make a well-informed decision tailored to your needs and preferences.

Hiring A Yacht Broker

Buying a superyacht is no small feat, and many first-time buyers find it helpful to hire a yacht broker, a professional who will serve as your guide and advocate throughout the purchasing process. Your broker can help you understand the market, advise on suitable yachts based on your preferences, and negotiate the best price.

Always choose a broker who is a member of a recognized yacht brokering organization. This membership indicates that the broker adheres to ethical standards and professional guidelines. And don’t just hire the first broker you meet. Instead, interview a few potential candidates and seek someone who understands your requirements and communicates well.

Financing and Insurance

Superyachts certainly cost a pretty penny, and while you might have the funds to purchase outright, you might also consider yacht financing options. These options can allow you to free up money that could be put to use in other investments. Like any financial decision, various pros and cons come with yacht finance, but a financial advisor well-versed in this area can provide invaluable insights.

Superyacht insurance is another critical component. The right insurance protects you from damages, liability, and other unexpected costs associated with yacht ownership. An insurance broker catering to marine insurance will be able to explain your potential coverage options.

Survey and Sea Trial

First-Time Superyacht BuyersFirst-Time Superyacht Buyers
Essential Tips for First-Time Superyacht Buyers 2

Two important steps when buying a yacht are the survey and sea trial. The survey involves hiring a marine expert to thoroughly inspect the yacht, checking for any damage or mechanical issues that could affect your decision. They examine everything from the hull to the engine and electrical systems to ensure everything is in good condition.

After the survey, the sea trial takes place. You, the broker, and the surveyor will take the yacht out on the water to test its performance in real conditions. This allows you to see how the yacht handles, how its systems work, and if any issues arise during use. The survey and sea trial are critical in spotting potential problems and can help you negotiate repairs or a better price before finalizing the purchase.

Legal and Documentation

Finalizing the purchase of a yacht entails navigating several critical legal and administrative steps. First, the execution of the sales agreement must be completed, a binding contract that outlines the terms of the sale, including price, conditions, and warranties. Following this, the yacht must be registered appropriately under a flag state, which involves selecting the appropriate jurisdiction for registration based on factors like tax advantages, privacy, and legal protections. Additionally, applicable taxes, duties, or import fees must be paid, which can vary significantly depending on the yacht’s purchase location and future cruising destinations. Given the complexity of maritime law and the high financial stakes, it is strongly advised to enlist a lawyer specializing in maritime law.

The Journey Beyond

Once you’ve purchased the yacht, the journey isn’t over. Owning a superyacht comes with responsibilities like maintenance, crewing, and dockage. Regular servicing of the yacht ensures maximum safety and longevity of your unit, whilst employing a capable and trustworthy crew will help you operate and manage your vessel more efficiently.

As a first-time superyacht buyer, the process may appear daunting initially. But with the right advice, professional assistance, and a calm, deliberate approach, buying a superyacht can be just as exciting as owning one. Remember, this is only the beginning of a grand adventure at sea. Let these essential tips guide you as you embark on this journey.

Essential Guide To Health Coverage In Europe

Exploring health coverage in Europe is vital for both locals and visitors. The European healthcare system is wide-ranging and ensures everyone gets the medical care they need. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a key part of this system. It lets you get state-provided healthcare when you’re temporarily in Europe.

It’s important to explore international health coverage in Europe to ensure you have the protection you need. Whether moving, traveling, or studying in Europe, having the right health insurance is crucial. This coverage provides added security and helps protect your finances from unexpected medical expenses.

Understanding Europe’s Health Coverage Systems

Europe’s healthcare systems vary significantly from country to country. It’s essential to know the difference between public and private health insurance. Each European Economic Area (EEA) country has its own way of handling healthcare and insurance.

Public Health Insurance

The state funds public health insurance in Europe. It covers most medical needs for citizens and residents and is seen as a key part of healthcare in the EEA.

Who gets it depends on where you live. The benefits are wide-ranging, from regular check-ups to complex treatments. How much you pay is based on your income, making it fair for everyone.

Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance is for those who want quicker access to care or treatments not covered by public insurance. It’s a good choice for expats. Private providers like Bupa and Allianz offer plans that fit your needs.

These plans offer extra benefits and flexibility. They ensure you get top-notch care through their large networks.

Health Coverage by Country

Every European country has its own health coverage system. For example, Germany has a mix of public and private insurance. People choose based on their income.

In contrast, the UK mainly uses the National Health Service (NHS). It’s free for everyone. EEA health insurance also makes it easier to get care in other countries.

When deciding between public and private insurance, look at what each country offers. Knowing this helps you choose the best coverage for your health and budget.

International Health Coverage in Europe

For expatriates, travelers, and anyone needing medical care abroad, knowing about international health coverage in Europe is key. Choosing cross-border health insurance lets you get medical care in different countries easily. Expatriate health coverage is made for those living in another country for a long time.

International medical insurance policies cover a lot, like medical evacuation and repatriation. They ensure your health needs are met, no matter where you are.

The EHIC usage helps temporary visitors get medical services in EEA countries and Switzerland at lower costs. But, the EHIC doesn’t replace the need for a full international health insurance plan for more coverage.

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Worldwide medical treatment
  • Direct billing with healthcare providers
  • Comprehensive coverage options for expatriates

Also, getting travel insurance is important for any trip length. It covers more than the EHIC, including a wider range of medical issues and emergencies.

How to Choose the Right Health Coverage Plan

Choosing health insurance in Europe can feel daunting. But, knowing what to look for makes it easier. First, think about how much coverage you need. Do you see doctors often? Do you need a lot of medicine?

These questions help you pick a plan that meets your health needs. It’s all about finding the right fit.

Money matters a lot when picking a plan. You should compare costs and benefits. Look at what you pay monthly and what you might have to pay out of pocket. This helps find a plan that’s both affordable and covers what you need.

Expats have unique considerations. A guide for expats can help a lot. It helps decide between local plans and international ones. Think about who you want to see and where you might need care.

Choosing between a more comprehensive network and lower costs is key to ensuring that your insurance is perfect for you.

  • Twist ‘n’ Spout: Guests must be at least 38 inches tall
  • AquaDunk: Guests must be at least 48 inches tall

Twist ‘n’ Spout

Thrill Rating: 😬😬

You’ll find the Twist ‘n’ Spout slide in the AquaLab on board the Disney Magic as well as the Disney Wonder. This double-looping family waterslide twists in one direction and then the other, covering a distance of almost 250 feet!

Disney Magic Twist N Spout

The height requirement on the Twist ‘n’ Spout is only 38 inches, which means that most kids aged about four and over should be tall enough to ride. It’s also open for adults to ride and there’s no maximum weight.

My four-year-old absolutely loved this yellow slide when we cruised on Disney Magic and said it was the best part of the whole ship!

AquaDunk

Thrill Rating: 😬😬😬😬😬

The Disney Magic AquaDunk is a thrilling body slide through a clear tube that extends over the side of the cruise ship.

Starting at the very top of the ship, 37 feet above the decks below, you’ll begin your ride by stepping into a loading capsule. Here, you’ll wait for the countdown before the floor drops away like a trap door! The wait is pretty terrifying, let me tell you.

You’ll then whizz down 212 feet before splashing down three decks below. I heard grown men scream like teenage girls on this slide.

Kids must be at least 48 inches to ride Disney’s AquaDunk, which equates to around seven years of age. Although my then-six-year-old daughter was almost tall enough to ride, there’s no way that she would want to! This slide is scary!

Disney Wonder Water Slides

The Disney Wonder has only one water slide – a yellow, spiralling water slide called Twist ‘n’ Spout. This family-friendly body slide is located within the AquaLab water park.

The Disney Wonder doesn’t have any of the thrill water slides that you’ll find on other Disney Cruise ships. That said, the Twist ‘n’ Spout is a fun slide that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

Disney Wonder Water Slide Requirements:

  • Twist ‘n’ Spout: Guests must be at least 38 inches tall

Twist ‘n’ Spout

Thrill Rating: 😬😬

Disney’s Twist ‘n’ Spout slide can be found on the Disney Wonder as well as the Disney Magic. This slide is a larger version of the Mickey Slide that’s on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

The yellow Twist ‘n’ Spout slide loops around several times before splashing into shallow water. There’s no maximum weight restriction which makes this slide ideal for adults, as well as kids of all ages (as long as they’re over 38 inches tall).

Disney Dream Water Slides

The Disney Dream cruise ship has two water slides – the AquaDuck and Mickey’s Slide. The AquaDuck is a thrilling 765-foot long water coaster that ends in a lazy river, whereas Mickey’s Slide is a smaller water slide that’s just for kids.

Disney Wonder Water Slide Requirements:

  • AquaDuck Guests must be at least 42 inches tall
  • Mickey’s Slide: Must be 38 and 64 inches tall and aged 4 to 14
  • Mr Ray’s Slide: Kids must be aged 8 and under

AquaDuck

Thrill Rating: 😬😬😬😬

Disney’s AquaDuck water coaster is located on Deck 12 of the Disney Dream as well as the Disney Fantasy. This thrilling waterslide takes you on a wild journey – up, down, over the side of the ship and right through the funnel!

The AquaDuck tube slide is 765 feet long and includes transparent and uncovered sections. You’ll ride in a two-person inflatable raft as you whizz all around the ship before splashing into a lazy river at the end.

You must be 42 inches or taller to ride the AquaDuck, so most six-year-olds will be tall enough to ride. Single riders must be 54 inches or taller and children aged under 7 must ride with someone aged 14 or over.

Mickey’s Slide

Thrill Rating: 😬😬

Mickey’s slide is a kids’ waterslide that you’ll find at Mickey’s Pool on board the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. This fun yellow slide is supported by a giant Mickey hand. You’ll climb a staircase inside the ship’s funnel to ride it.

Mickey’s slide is only for kids – they must be aged between 4 and 14 years old and be between 38 and 64 inches tall to ride. Adult supervision is also required.

Mr Ray Slide

Thrill Rating: 😬

On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, you’ll find Nemo’s Reef – a water play area for kids aged 8 and under. It includes a child-sized water slide that’s shaped like Mr. Ray, the singing science teacher from Finding Nemo.

Disney Fantasy Water Slides

On board the Disney Fantasy cruise ship there are two water slides. The AquaDuck is a thrilling 765-foot-long water coaster with inflatable rafts. There’s also Mickey’s Water Slide which is a smaller waterslide that’s only for kids aged 4 to 14.

Disney Fantasy Water Slide Requirements:

  • AquaDuck Guests must be at least 42 inches tall
  • Mickey’s Slide: Must be 38 and 64 inches tall and aged 4 to 14
  • Mr Ray’s Slide: Kids must be aged 8 and under

The waterslides on Disney Fantasy are identical to those on Disney Dream. You can read more about them in the Disney Fantasy section above.

Disney Wish Water Slides

Disney’s newest cruise ship, Disney Wish, features the AquaMouse water ride. More than just a water slide, the AquaMouse is hailed as the first Disney attraction at sea. It features lighting, special effects and show scenes.

Disney Wish Water Slide Requirements:

  • AquaMouse: Guests must be at least 42 inches tall
  • Slide-a-saurus Rex: Guests must be at least 38 inches tall
  • Toy Story Toddler Slides: For young children under 32 inches

AquaMouse

Thrill Rating: 😬😬😬😬

The AquaMouse is the Disney Wish slide that sends guests on an adventure through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the top deck.

To ride the AquaMouse you climb aboard a two-seater inflatable raft and float uphill through a magical tunnel where a movie plays through oversized virtual portholes.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy more than 60 special effects that are perfectly synced to music. The slide includes a dark section, a series of speed blasters and a loop over the edge of the ship.

I loved this slide, as it has a very entertaining but slow beginning before you zoom off! Here’s a video of me riding it…

Slide-a-saurus Rex

Thrill Rating: 😬😬

The Disney Wish features the Toy Story Splash Zone – a bathtub-themed water playground inspired by the Disney and Pixar short ‘Partysaurus Rex’. Here you’ll find the Slide-a-saurus Rex as well as lots of water jets, bubblers and geysers.

The Slide-a-saurus Rex is a double-looping water slide that sends guests plunging ‘down the drain’. Not just for kids, it can be enjoyed by the whole family and I really enjoyed this slide, even if it was a little slow.

Slide A Saurus Rex Disney Wish

Toy Story Toddler Slides

Thrill Rating: 😬

The Toy Story Splash Zone aboard the Disney Wish includes two small toddler-sized water slides that are fun for children under 6. The beige one is quite fast and I saw a few toddlers shoot off the end!

Disney Treasure Water Slides

Disney Treasure has the same water slides as Disney Wish, although the AquaMouse will feature a different story and different theming.

Otherwise, you can read all about the Disney Treasure waterslides in the section above.

To Conclude

Disney cruise ships are known for their amazing water slides. Each ship features a unique combination of slides, except for Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy which each have the same slides.

The best Disney cruise ship for waterslides is the newest ship Disney Wish which set sail in July 2022. This ship features the new AquaMouse water ride as well as a Toy Story-themed family slides and two toddler-sized slides. Disney Treasure will feature the same slides when she launches in 2024.

I LOVED the slides on this ship – you can read more about what else I loved in my Disney Wish review.

If you and your kids love waterslides you’ll have a great time on any of the Disney cruise ships. You may wish to avoid the Disney Wonder though – this ship has only one slide and it’s not as exciting as some of the water coasters you’ll find on the other Disney ships.
