5 Things People Love NOT Doing on a Cruise

I recently read a social media post asking, “What’s your favorite thing to do on a cruise?”  After reading through the comments, there was a theme.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

The funny thing is, it was not so much what people liked to do on a cruise as much as what they didn’t have to do that made them love cruising.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean ship in port

Most cruisers commented that they loved this style of travel because of the things they were escaping back home and on other types of vacations.

Most answers said something like “Not having to ________.”

After taking cruises for the last 15 years, I have to agree with this sentiment.

These are the top 5 things you get to completely avoid when you’re on a cruise.

1. Cook and Clean

This was the most mentioned category people mentioned.  When you book an Airbnb for a family vacation, there’s always the matter of dinner.   Someone has to do the cooking, and hosts usually expect you to do the dishes throughout the week as well.

Not having to lift a pan, wash a dish, or risk burning a roast is one of the best parts of cruising.  On top of this, many ships have well over a dozen different dining venues to choose from, making your cruise a sort of progressive dinner.

With food included in the price, many cruisers look forward to getting a break from cooking as one of the biggest perks.

There’s always the option to spend a little extra for a specialty dining experience too, but it’s never very far away on the floating resort.

2. Unpack

Sure, you do have to unpack once but hear me out.  On a cruise you get to travel to all kinds of destinations and still sleep in the same bed every night.    Except for maybe train travel, there aren’t many types of vacations where you can unpack once and see dozens of ports and cities.

Both packing and unpacking are two of my least favorite activities.  And I don’t want to live out of a suitcase on a cruise, so I will usually unpack as quickly as I can, filling up the closet and drawers, and making that cabin home for the week.

On some non-cruise vacations, you could look forward to unpacking 5 or 6 times while you see several cities in Europe.

On one of my favorite trips, I took a Viking river cruise down the Danube River and was able to see half a dozen different iconic cities in Europe — and yes, I only unpacked once.  That’s my kind of travel.

By the way, here are a few things most people forget to pack on a cruise.

3. Plan

You could spend a lot of time planning.  But you really don’t have to.  I’ve been on cruises where I planned almost every hour of the day.  I’ve also taken last-minute cruises where I didn’t plan a single thing.  I actually enjoyed the cruise I didn’t plan even more.

If your goal is to just get away and relax, booking the cruise is all the planning you have to do.  I know many people who just like to take it one day at a time.  They take a look at the daily schedule once in a while and see if there’s anything interesting.

Other than that, they lounge around on the pool deck, in the spa, or in the adult-only area and let the ship take them to the next destination.

As a caveat to this point, if you’re choosing the cruise based on destinations you’ll want to do a fair share of planning for those port days.

4. Drive

Some people love to drive.  I get that.  But on vacation, it’s nice to just let someone else handle that part.

A cruise lets the captain take care of the navigation part for you.  And even in different ports of call you can just grab a taxi or Uber and still not have to get behind the wheel.

If your job involves a long commute and stop and go traffic to and from work, it’s great that a cruise vacation allows you to just enjoying being a passenger for a while.

5. Stay Connected

Sometimes I miss the old days of cruising when you could totally unplug and disconnect while out at sea.   In fact, it was the only option.

Today, with Starlink internet connection speeds fast enough for video calling and downloading movies, it’s easier than ever to stay connected to everything back on land.

But you don’t have to stay connected.  You can save yourself a few bucks, skip the WiFi package, and just enjoy a break from work emails for a week.

And with international roaming charges making a great excuse for leaving your phone in airplane mode, no one could blame you for letting your voicemails pile up too.  It’s an issue for another day.

As someone who writes about the cruise industry, I almost always have to get the WiFi package, but I do get a few dirty looks if I break out my laptop at the onboard coffee shop.  And I understand that.  Vacations are for unplugging.

Bottom Line

Cruise ships offer more to do than ever before.  With activities like escape rooms, zip lining, go-kart racing, and all kinds of other things, you won’t run out of things to do.  But a vacation doesn’t just consist of the things you can do.  It’s also all about the things you get to escape for an entire week or more.

If you already cruise, you know all of this.  If you’re on the fence about this style of vacation, ask a cruiser and be ready to sit down.

Cruise Line Expanding Cruises in the South Pacific in 2026

A small ship cruise line is expanding cruises in the South Pacific in 2026 with new sailings that range from seven to 15 days in length.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Windstar Cruises has announced that they will be expanding cruises in the dream location of the South Pacific, an area where they already have a significant presence.

The new cruises will visit Fiji, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Bora Bora and the French Polynesia.

To celebrate this news, the cruise line is offering an early booking offer that includes the following:

  • WiFi
  • Unlimited wine, beer and cocktails
  • All gratuities
  • $100 in on board credit per cabin

The seven-day Dreams of Tahiti cruise can be combined with an air and overwater bungalow package that includes an over the water bungalow in Bora Bora.

New itineraries in the region for Windstar Cruises include:

  • Flowers of the South French Polynesia (15 days)
  • Maori Storytellers & French Polynesian Treasures (10 or 11 days)
  • Tantalizing Tuamotu Islands & Beautiful Bora Bora (7 days)
  • Far Flung French Polynesia and Marquesas Magic (11 days)

Windstar Cruises brings the culture of French Polynesia aboard with an onboard cultural ambassador for all cruises.

A local Polynesian invites guests to embrace all things Polynesian throughout the cruise with special sessions on dance, music, language, culture and art.

All itineraries include a complimentary Bora Bora Destination Discovery Event, which is a private evening feast on a motu (small island) with local performances from music to fire dancing.

Windstar President Christopher Prelog, said the following about these new cruises:

“Tahiti is one of my favorite destinations on the planet, and I was thrilled to expand Windstar’s itineraries in the region to the remote Marquesas Islands this year.

“These new additions are a natural progression for us, as these faraway South Pacific islands exemplify the heart of Polynesian culture. But they are extremely difficult to access, especially if you’re piecing together your own trip.

“On Windstar, you’re able to sail there easily on an all-suite ship that has no more than 312 passengers. We can go to places like Tonga and Taveuni without overwhelming the destination from a tourism, ecological, and cultural perspective, due to our small size and the great relationships we’ve built while sailing in the region over decades.”

Windstar Cruises, an expert in sailing in the region, has sailed in the South Pacific for more than 36 years.

Royal Caribbean Adds Multi-Plug Outlets To Banned Items List

Royal Caribbean has updated its list of prohibited items, now banning multi-plug outlets.

packing for a cruise

Multi-plug outlets are now classified as “Flammable Items,” similar to extension cords and power strips, due to their potential to overheat and cause fires, particularly in confined cabin spaces.

This update may pose challenges for travellers, especially on older ships where power outlets are limited. It could be difficult to charge all your devices simultaneously.

To circumvent this, passengers should consider bringing USB charging hubs or portable chargers to keep their devices powered without violating the rules.

Many other cruise lines do permit extension cords, provided they aren’t surge-protected – despite surge-protected extensions being safer to use at home, they’re actually more dangerous on a cruise ship due to the electrical system design.

Before embarking on a cruise, it’s crucial to review the list of prohibited items. This way, you won’t have any items confiscated at the terminal, allowing you to begin your holiday without any hitches.

If you plan on bringing multiple electrical devices on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you might need to work out the best charging strategy – making sure your must-haves for the day are charged overnight using the limited outlets available.

Unveiling The Best Mekong Luxury Cruises In Southeast Asia

There aren’t many places on Earth like the Mekong River, where ancient traditions and gorgeous landscapes come together to provide a really amazing experience. For ages, prosperous civilizations have been built upon the fabled river that flows through the heart of Southeast Asia.

The Mekong remains the vital conduit that links the modern civilizations of Vietnam and Cambodia with the historical Khmer Empire. Those seeking an adventure into history, culture, and unmatched beauty may see a world where the past and present coexist on a luxury cruise along the Mekong.

Discovering the Mekong

With a length of over 4,000 kilometers and a course that passes through six nations, the Mekong River is the largest river in Southeast Asia. Its most fascinating section, perhaps, is between Vietnam and Cambodia.

From vibrant metropolises like Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, to secluded floating villages and tranquil Buddhist monasteries tucked away along the riverbanks, visitors may witness a rich tapestry of life here. The rivers provide an unrivaled opportunity to see these areas from a different perspective as they meander through both urban and rural environments.

The best Mekong luxury cruise is more than simply a trip. Immersion in civilizations is influenced by the course of the river. It conveys the soul of, whether you’re stepping ashore to see historic temples, viewing animals, or cruising by emerald rice fields.

Onboard Luxury

Luxury cruises along the river offer the perfect balance of adventure and indulgence. The experience is designed for travelers who seek comfort without compromising the thrill of exploration.

Imagine yourself dining at a fine restaurant with regional cuisine. At the same time, the sun sets behind far-off mountains or relaxing on a sun terrace while the river meanders through verdant surroundings.

These floating havens are furnished with top-notch conveniences. Thanks to the spacious rooms with panoramic views, passengers may never miss the breathtaking beauty outside. After a day of exploring, onboard spas, gyms, and even plunge pools offer areas to unwind.

Paddleboarding, kayaking, and guided walks are among the active options available to those who want to see the Mekong’s beauties up close.

Every luxury cruise keeps its guest count low to guarantee a customized experience and intimate surroundings. The degree of care and attention you receive onboard, with a crew-to-guest ratio of almost one-to-one, enhances the whole

Cultural Immersion Through Expert-Led Excursions

The chance to experience the indigenous way of life fully is among the most amazing features of a Mekong River tour. The true magic arrives when you go ashore, even though the ship experience offers some luxury. Every destination on the tour reveals a little bit of the rich history of the area.

Beautiful remnants of old Khmer temples, many of which predate the renowned Angkor Wat, are frequently seen during excursions in Cambodia. Explore these stone monuments and be astounded by their detailed carvings while learning from experts. The contributions from Vietnam are likewise fascinating.

Every stop along the river offers something different, from seeing the vibrant heritage of Buddhist pagodas to visiting local markets where lively merchants sell fresh fruit.

Best Time to Embark

Mekong Luxury CruisesMekong Luxury Cruises
Unveiling the Ultimate Mekong Luxury Cruises 2

The scheduling of a luxury cruise might be quite important. Luckily, the area is reachable all year round due to its tropical environment. However, depending on what you desire to experience, certain months provide clear advantages.

The cooler dry season, which runs from November to March, is generally acknowledged to be the best time to enjoy a river cruise. The reduced humidity and colder temperatures make excursions more pleasurable, while the clear sky provides ideal sightseeing chances. It’s also a calmer time of day on the river, making sailing simpler.

During the rainy season, which spans from May to October, those who like less crowds and don’t mind a little rain may discover advantages. When monsoon rains arrive, the river rises and throws a riot of color throughout the surrounding area. Rain normally falls in brief bursts, so you have plenty of time to explore, even if the humidity may be higher.

Navigating the Mekong: Key Destinations

The route and the destinations are significant when traveling along the Mekong River. Every spot along the river tells a different tale, skillfully fusing historical, cultural, and natural aspects into an engaging journey.

One of the first ports of call is often Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s bustling capital. Here, travelers can explore the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and the sobering Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, offering a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s recent history.

A visit to Phnom Penh reminds one of the resilience of the Cambodian people and is a testament to the city’s transformation in the decades following the Khmer Rouge regime.

Further downstream, Vietnam’s vibrant Ho Chi Minh City provides a stark contrast to the tranquil river life. The city pulses with energy, offering a modern twist on its colonial past. Whether wandering through the historic French Quarter or enjoying a bowl of pho at a street-side vendor, Ho Chi Minh City is a sensory delight.

Between these major cities, the Mekong winds through a series of quieter yet equally enchanting stops. Floating markets, where locals trade goods directly from their boats, offer a fascinating glimpse into river commerce.

Remote fishing villages showcase the traditional lifestyles that have remained unchanged for centuries. Every bend in the river presents a new scene, making each day of the cruise an adventure in itself.

How to Get There

Convenient boarding locations are available for most luxury cruises in major cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Ho Chi Minh City. There are many flights from international hubs to these destinations, so starting a river excursion is not difficult for visitors.

In order to guarantee a flawless vacation, a lot of cruises also provide free transfers and flight extensions, particularly during the low water season.

As soon as you are on board, the experience starts. Travelers may select an itinerary that best suits their interests and timetable from options that range from three to seven days. Every itinerary, whatever of length, is thoughtfully designed to highlight the greatest features of the Mekong.

Brits More Likely To Say “I Do” To Adventure Before Marriage

A new study conducted by HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) has revealed some interesting details about the adventurous tendencies of British travellers.

HX Adventure

The research has shown that the ultimate age of adventure for Brits is 34 and three-quarters – and with average age for getting married rising, it shows that people are looking to get out and see the world before settling down.

Overall, half of those Brits surveyed described themselves as adventurous, either by wanting to be daring, travel the world, or try new experiences.

And the study showed that those aged 60+ view being adventurous as finding ways of getting past their fears.

Friends are seen as the most inspiring force for adventure, with guests saying that it was their loved ones who drove them to be bold. Social media was a close second, as people discovered new ways to see the world, and new experiences to uncover.

Gen Z claimed to be the most adventurous, with 76% of younger people saying that’s how they felt. But, they claimed that they didn’t have the time, or anyone to be adventurous with.

83% of those interviewed in the study said that they had already travelled to Europe, and so wanted to look further afield – Australasia being the most popular option, followed by South America.

HX offers many exciting options for expedition travel, letting guests see the world on small ships with some of the most exciting excursion opportunities of any cruise line.

With a vision to redefine luxury ocean travel for discerning travelers, Explora Journeys blends European hospitality and 300 years of maritime heritage. It offers guests the chance to experience a unique “Ocean State of Mind,” connecting them with the sea and curated destinations.

The traditional maritime ceremony featured the symbolic cutting of a ribbon to break a bottle on the ship’s bow. This honor was conducted by EXPLORA II’s godmother, Rosalba Giugni, founder and president of the Marevivo Foundation, a non-partisan environmental conservation organization committed to preserving marine environments, founded in 1985.

Rosalba was chosen for this honor as a friend and partner of the MSC Foundation and as a mark of respect for her 35-year commitment to protecting the world’s oceans.

The naming ceremony brought together distinguished guests from across the globe, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Antonio Tajani, Admiral Nicola Carlone, ART President Nicola Zaccheo, the President of the Port Authority, Pino Musolino, the Mayor of Civitavecchia, Marco Piendibene and Italian film director, screenwriter and Academy Award winner Giuseppe Tornatore, as well as international journalists, key travel partners, and senior MSC Group representatives, including Founder and Group Chairman, Gianluigi Aponte. The event was hosted by Italian actress and TV personality Lorella Cuccarini and concluded with a traditional parade of ship officers.

Following the formal proceedings, guests enjoyed a gala dinner and an evening of vibrant celebrations, including a captivating musical performance by English pop singer Tony Hadley. The evening also included a breathtaking drone show that creatively narrated the story of Explora Journeys, featuring a stunning display of the Mandala and the Explora Journeys logo.

Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, Pierfrancesco Vago said: “Naming a new ship is a proud maritime tradition, and tonight’s celebration marks our continued growth as we redefine luxury ocean travel. Our vision began with the contemporary brand MSC Cruises where we developed a premium offer with MSC Yacht Club and from there we identified a further demand for luxury experiences at sea. With Explora Journeys we offer an unparalleled value proposition and a unique offering compared to other types of luxury holiday. By 2028 the Explora Journeys fleet will comprise six ships offering a spirit of luxurious ocean adventure visiting sought-after destinations, where our guests can expect the same high standards and quality service across our fleet, all over the globe.”

EXPLORA II introduces new features to enhance guests’ luxury ocean travel experience, including new retail options—the first Buccellati jewelry boutique at sea and special collaborations and limited editions by Borsalino, Kampos, and Massaba for Explora Journeys, exclusively available at the ship’s ‘The Journey’ boutique.

The redesigned Ocean Wellness Spa offers a series of new treatment programs inspired by authentic Ayurvedic principles. The Helios Pool & Bar has been refreshed with bespoke Unopiù outdoor furniture designed by Matteo Nunziati.

EXPLORA II features original artwork by Emilio Isgró and Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s ‘Marine Encounters’, an exhibition of his marine photographs showcasing diverse underwater species and ecosystems. The exquisite collection of marine photography was gifted to the MSC Foundation as part of the partnership between the MSC Foundation and ‘Focused on Nature’, reflecting a shared vision to educate and inspire action on the need to preserve marine life and biodiversity.

EXPLORA II’s 7-night maiden journey, which began yesterday, will include stops in stunning Sorrento, Lipari, Trapani, Siracusa, and Valletta, ending in Tarragona, Spain.

EXPLORA II and EXPLORA I will reposition to the Caribbean for the winter season, offering incredible itineraries. Highlight destinations include Gustavia in St. Barts, Oranjestad in Aruba, and St. John’s in Antigua. In the summer of 2025, EXPLORA II will sail in the Western Mediterranean, visiting ports such as Barcelona in Spain, St. Tropez in France, Monte Carlo, and Porto Cervo in Italy.

Last week, Explora Journeys celebrated the keel laying of EXPLORA III and the steel cutting of EXPLORA IV at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente, near Genoa, Italy. EXPLORA III, set for delivery in 2026, will be the first of four liquefied natural gas-powered ships in the Explora Journeys fleet, followed by EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V in 2027 and EXPLORA VI in 2028.

All ships feature modern environmental and marine technologies, including selective catalytic reduction systems, shore power plug-in connectivity, underwater noise management systems to protect aquatic life, and a comprehensive range of onboard energy-efficient equipment designed to optimize engine use and reduce emissions. The ship has been designated ‘Green Plus’ by RINA – the highest level that the certification body grants for environmental sustainability.
