The topic of passports on a cruise is a common one. First-time cruisers who don’t want to get caught off guard often bring it up as well.

Even for closed-loop cruises out of the United States I recommend having a passport. If nothing else, it simplifies the boarding process and documents needed.
Additionally, if something happens when you’re off the ship in a foreign country, you will want to have packed your passport.
But should you take your passport with you any time you are getting off the ship at a port of call? Do you really need to have it on you at all times?
Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed this concern in a social media post this morning.
The passenger’s original comment stated, “John. Passports should always be taken into port as your ID. If I’m ever on a cruise (Bahamas, Mexico, any of the other island nations) I always take my passport. Everyone should. I am a diamond passenger and elite + on—–If not, why do you have it?”
The Carnival guest was referencing previous statements by Heald which recommended having a photocopy or picture of the passport information for some ports of call.
“If for some reason you miss the boat (broken down excursion bus/cab or injured sitting in a hospital, etc.) your passport will sail on and you’ll be stuck in a foreign country with a piece of paper with a picture of your passport which is good for nothing,” the message to Heald said.
The comment went on to criticize Heald’s advice, “John why are you even here if you provide incorrect information that could become a disaster for your passengers.“
While some regular cruisers like to have their passports on them at all times, Heald offered a different perspective.
“You should not take your original passport with you when you go ashore,” Heald stated in his response to the concerned passenger.
He explained that a photocopy of the passport, driver’s license, or similar identification is sufficient for returning to the ship.
Heald also addressed the potential concern of missing the ship due to an emergency.
“In case of an emergency which meant you could not return to the ship, we do indeed have a policy in place,” he assured. Carnival Cruise Line’s policy involves retrieving the guest’s passport from their cabin, ensuring its safekeeping, and returning it to the ship’s agent in the port.
The Brand Ambassador ultimately acknowledged that a lot of it came down to personal preference.
A vacation should never cause undue stress. If you will be stressing about having or not having your passport on you then make the decision that puts you at ease.
As Heald has stated, cruise lines will make necessary arrangements if you cannot make it back to the ship on time.
The key is to make sure you are at least traveling with a passport.
Royal Caribbean International has cancelled a cruise on the Rhapsody of the Seas because one of the ship’s lifeboats was damaged.
The cruise was supposed to depart from Puerto Rico on 15 September 2024, but it was called off to ensure everyone’s safety.
The lifeboat, which is also used as a tender boat to transport passengers to shore, was damaged on a previous trip, so the ship can’t meet safety regulations.
Royal Caribbean promptly informed passengers about the cancellation. They are providing a full refund and a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equal to the original cost. This credit can be used for another cruise at a later date.
The company will also reimburse non-refundable travel expenses, such as flights or train tickets, up to $200 per person for changes within the country and $400 for international changes.
The Rhapsody of the Seas was scheduled for a seven-night trip through the Southern Caribbean, stopping in destinations such as Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, and Barbados.
Obviously it’s an awful experience having a cruise cancelled at such short notice before it sets sail, but cruise lines can’t take risks with guests’ safety.
The fact that guests will get a refund, as well as Future Cruise Credit to essentially give them a free cruise in future, hopefully mitigates the disappointment.

Norwegian Cruise Line has revealed exciting new entertainment for its upcoming ship, the Norwegian Aqua, launching in April 2025.
This ship, part of the Prima-plus class, aims to change cruise entertainment with shows as impressive as those in big cities like Las Vegas and New York.
One of the main attractions is “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince,” a special tribute show honouring the famous musician Prince.
Alongside this is “Elements: The World Expanded,” an updated version of the popular show already enjoyed on the NCL fleet. Both shows are designed to give guests unique and memorable experiences at sea.
The entertainment on the Norwegian Aqua is crafted to deliver top-notch performances, featuring talented performers and the latest technology.
“For decades, NCL has set the standard in entertainment at sea, with worldclass productions and talent that rivals those found in major cities like Las Vegas, New York City and London. For Norwegian Aqua, we are thrilled to build on our legacy of excellence in entertainment to offer our guests more options across the ship, including exclusive original productions that cannot be seen anywhere else on land or at sea.“
David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line
There’ll be plenty more entertainment for guests to enjoy on the ship too, including a brand new “Welcome Aboard Show” featuring singers, dancers and other entertainers.
This show is designed to give everyone a teaser of what’s to come during the rest of the cruise, and so should be a thrilling event.
There’s also the immersive concert experience “Ocean Music Fest”, and the Aqua Theater & Club will host several themed events – a 90s Party, a Latin-themed ‘Livin La Vida Loca’ party, and “Pop Life” which will again feature some of Prince’s best hits.
Norwegian Aqua will debut in spring 2025, offering 7-night Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral in her initial season.

I love taking cruises, I think they offer the best value among all types of vacations. I have cruised all around the world on over 15 different cruise lines.
Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
After taking nearly 80 cruises, here are eight things that I’ve done on cruises that I’ll never do again.
Wait Until Boarding the Ship to Book Dining
Most cruise lines will now allow you to book specialty restaurants before you board the ship.
I once booked a cruise fare that included four dining at specialty restaurants but I figured I would just wait until I boarded the ship to book them.
Unfortunately for me, most of the time slots were full by the time I got on the ship. The few restaurants that had openings were very late dining times (9:00, 9:30 pm etc.). I was only able to use two of the four free nights that came with my cruise.
Some cruise lines will reserve time slots for guests to book on embarkation day. I recommend doing that as soon as you get on the ship so you can take advantage of any dining packages that may come with your cruise fare.
Spa Raffles
On embarkation day, the spa will have a raffle for a free massage or something along the lines of a $100 credit to use in the spa on your cruise.
I tried going to them but they always turn into long sales pitches. Also, you have to return to the spa at the time of the raffle in order to win.
Sometimes I’d forget to return to the raffle and it always ended up being a waste of time. Now I just avoid them all together and it makes embarkation day so much more enjoyable.
Inside Cabin
In an effort to save money, I once booked an inside cabin on a cruise. I figured, it couldn’t be that bad not having a window, right?
I love to wake up to the sunrise and in an inside cabin, I literally had no idea if the sun was up or down. I felt like I was trapped inside a small closet for four days.
One thing I love about ocean view or balcony cabins is that you have a window so you can always see where you are, even if you are just out at sea. In the inside cabin, I felt like I wasn’t even on a ship.
I know some people love inside cabins but I learned that they just aren’t for me.
Upgrading to a Suite on Embarkation Day
On one of my short cruises, they had a sign up during check-in that said paid upgrades to suites were available. I decided to pay the extra amount to get a suite for a change.
However, since it was a short cruise, I was really only in the suite to sleep. While the extra space was nice, I would not do it again on a short cruise since I wasn’t able to really take advantage of the suite.
If it was a longer cruise and had several sea days, then I could consider it. For a short cruise, no thanks.
Free Souvenirs in Port
During port talks, cruise lines will tell you about certain stores you can visit the next day where you can get a free souvenir.
On my first cruise, I fell for this trap and started going from store to store to get my freebie. I ended up wasting a good chunk of my day visiting these stores only to get a hard sell at each one of them.
It was a complete waste of time that would have been better spent doing other things.
Art Auctions
I went to an art auction once to see what the big deal was. Most of the mainstream cruise lines have these auctions and they even offer free champagne to those who attend.
First of all, it wasn’t really an auction. If you bid on an item, you pretty much won it since so few people bid on anything at them.
Most of the items received no bids at all and ended with “Give a hand to the artist” before they brought out the next item.
I thought I was going to watch people get into bidding wars and unfortunately, that rarely happens at ship art auctions.
Visit Guest Services on Last Day
I once needed to visit Guest Services to take care of something and decided that I would just wait until the last evening to do it.
Unfortunately, the line for guest services was long and slow due to people asking to take their daily gratuities off of their account. It wasn’t what I was there for but there were many in line for that reason. But that’s a hot topic issue for another day.
I’ve learned to avoid Guest Services on the first and last day of cruises to avoid long lines.
Rent Scooters in Port
I tend to go back and forth between booking shore excursions through the cruise line and through 3rd party websites. I find value in both and which one I use depends on the port and excursion.
However, one thing that I’ll never do is rent a scooter in port. My brother, who runs Cruise Fever with me, rented a scooter to drive the loop in Cozumel.
He said the scooter was in such bad shape that it almost got them killed a few times.
I once rented a car to drive the loop and a scooter lost control around a corner and almost slammed right into my car. Something broke on it but thankfully she was able to avoid my car.

Norwegian Aqua will debut in 2025 and will have exclusive entertainment offerings. This includes guest favorites and two shows, “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince” and “Elements: The World Expanded”.
The tribute to Prince show will be an hour-long concert with performances featuring many of his chart topping hits.
Guests will have the option to enjoy the show on the dance floor with the cast or watch from traditional theater seating.
Patricia Wilcox, conceiver, director and choreographer of “Revolution: A Celebration of Prince”, said the following:
“I’ve always been inspired by Prince and the idea came to me, nearly seven years ago, to create a theatrical concert that would joyfully celebrate his music and exceptional artistry.
“After loving my past collaborations with the team at Norwegian Cruise Line, and seeing the beautiful, multi-purpose theater aboard Norwegian Aqua, I knew we would be wonderful partners for this collaboration, and I’m honored to bring this show to life alongside the NCL team, Prince Legacy, LLC and Primary Wave Music.”
Also, NCL is taking their highest rated show in their history and enhancing it. Elements: The World Expanded will have new surprises as the show draws inspiration from the four elements – earth, wind, water and fire.
Norwegian Aqua will also have “The Improv at Sea” comedy club, “The Price is Right LIVE on NCL” game show and “Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours”.
The Aqua Theater & Club will transform from a three-story theater to a three-story Vegas style nightclub. Three themed parties will take place in this unique space.

David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, gave the following statement:
“For decades, NCL has set the standard in entertainment at sea, with worldclass productions and talent that rivals those found in major cities like Las Vegas, New York City and London. For Norwegian Aqua, we are thrilled to build on our legacy of excellence in entertainment to offer our guests more options across the ship, including exclusive original productions that cannot be seen anywhere else on land or at sea.”
Norwegian Aqua will debut in April 2025 and will be a sister ship to Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva. The ship will sail from Port Canaveral offering seven night cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas.
After a season in Florida, the ship will move to New York City for five- to seven-night cruises to Bermuda.
The cruise ship will reposition to Miami for the winter sailing five- to seven-night sailings to the Caribbean from October 2025 until April 2026.
Norwegian Aqua will be the 20th ship in NCL’s fleet.
A would-be passenger of the long-delayed Villa Vie Odyssey cruise claims she was removed from the voyage after making critical comments in text app groups.
Jenny Phenix, 68, from Florida, USA, says her contract for the residential cruise was cancelled after she expressed concerns in the group chat about ongoing delays and the ship’s refurbishment.
The three-year, round-the-world journey has been delayed for over three months, leaving many passengers in Northern Ireland as they await a new departure date.
Ms Phenix, who had sold her possessions to embark on the cruise, had planned to stop in Miami to collect more belongings for the remainder of the journey. However, her remarks about the extended delays and having to stay in a temporary cabin allegedly led to her expulsion from the voyage.
She was informed that her contract was terminated for negatively affecting the morale of other passengers.
“We have received over a dozen formal complaints from residents regarding your continuous complaints and negativity. This behaviour has significantly impacted the morale and wellbeing of other passengers. Given the overwhelming feedback, we must cancel your contract permanently to uphold the wellbeing and satisfaction of our community.”
Villa Vie Residences’ chief operating officer, Kathy Villalba, writing to Ms Phenix
Ms Phenix, who has been living out of a suitcase since December 2023, told The Telegraph: “These were private conversations – I posted nothing on social media platforms. The frustration among residents grew after each delay. I tended to be one of the more outspoken in asking important questions. Many of the residents thanked me privately for speaking up for the entire group.”
This is not Ms Phenix’s first setback involving a round-the-world cruise. Earlier this year, she lost thousands of dollars when the Life at Sea residential cruise scheme filed for bankruptcy in July.
Ms Phenix has described her recent experiences as “emotionally devastating” and is now staying with her daughter while she figures out her next steps.
In a statement shared with The Telegraph, Villa Vie’s CEO, Mike Petterson, said: “Ms Phenix broke multiple terms and conditions and signed a non-disclosure agreement. The founding residents voted and agreed to uphold her suspension and we plan on respecting that decision. We have nothing else to comment on the ongoing dispute.”
The Villa Vie Odyssey was originally scheduled to depart from Northern Ireland in May 2024, with plans to visit all seven continents and over 425 ports in 147 destinations. However, mechanical issues, including repairs to the rudder and gearbox, have delayed the voyage.
Popular YouTube vloggers MidLife Cruising, who have been documenting their experience on the delayed ship, recently shared that they had received an email from Villa Vie Residences’ CEO on 9 September, explaining there were “ongoing problems.”

A couple is receiving backlash after a now deleted social media post detailed how they left their young children in a cruise cabin by themselves.
Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
The two social media influencers, Matt and Abby Howard, post videos about life and relationships. After a recent family cruise the couple mentioned how they got some alone time on the ship.
Joining them on the cruise were their two young children who were 2 and 12-months old.
“So we ended up taking them for 5 nights and it became apparent that they weren’t enjoying it and therefore we weren’t either,” Abby said in the story.
“So, THEN we switched our dinner time to AFTER their bedtime and FaceTIMED the monitors while we ate. And that worked out muchhhh better for everyone!”
The couple apparently came prepared, bringing Motorola baby monitors onboard. But Abby noted in the Instagram story that they didn’t work on the ship unless they were “only like 10 feet away” from the device.
Finding a way to use their mobile devices to show a “live feed” of their toddlers in the cabin was the solution the couple ended up using.
TikTok account, Anna Reports News, reported on the story, pointing out how dangerous this situation was, and how the post was likely deleted as soon as comments began flooding in.
“They left these two babies in the stateroom while they went out to eat and they FaceTimed the baby monitors,” Anna said.
“Just the every day unsafe things that kids could get into when they are by themselves, especially under the age of 2 and 1…”
Anna mentioned that this family cruise had other family members on board that could have helped to watch the children if they wanted some alone time at dinner.
Baby monitors were on the “ban list” for many cruise lines for a while, but the reasons for it were always in question. Many point out that it was to discourage this kind of practice. Toddlers should not be left unattended in staterooms for a multitude of obvious reasons.
On top of this, cruise ships are huge. Even if the couple noticed an issues on the screen, they could not likely get back to the child very quickly.
Comments on the social media post showed anger and disapproval of what the couple had done, and neither of the two has yet to address the social media post that caused the firestorm.
Cruise vacations have evolved beyond lounging on deck chairs and indulging in endless buffets. For water-loving adventurers, the range of watersports offered by modern cruise lines provides the perfect blend of excitement, skill, and connection to the natural environment.
Whether you’re cruising in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, these activities let you explore the beauty of the sea while giving you the adrenaline rush. In this article, we’ll dive into five watersports gaining momentum among cruise enthusiasts, providing seasoned travelers a way to elevate their experience on the water.
Wakesurfing: A Must-Try for Adrenaline Junkies
Wakesurfing is an exciting water activity that has rapidly gained popularity in the cruising community. Unlike wakeboarding or water skiing, wake surfing lets you ride the boat’s wake on a smaller board without needing tow ropes after the initial start. The appeal of wakesurfing lies in its ability to combine balance, speed, and style as riders maneuver over the artificial waves created by the boat.
For cruise enthusiasts, wake surfing is more than just a thrilling watersport. It allows you to stay in close proximity to the boat while enjoying a unique ride that is relatively easier on the body compared to wakeboarding, as you travel at slower speeds. The lower speed means that even beginners can enjoy this sport without worrying about harsh impacts if they fall. Another great advantage is that you can conveniently purchase your wakesurfing equipment online before your trip, ensuring you have the perfect board and gear ready when you arrive.
Some cruise lines even offer specialized boats designed to create ideal wakes for this sport, making it accessible whether you’re a pro or just getting started. With the growing popularity of wake surfing, many enthusiasts plan their cruises around destinations that cater to the sport, such as the calm, warm waters of the Caribbean or Mediterranean coastlines.
Kitesurfing: Harnessing the Power of the Wind
Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, and paragliding while propelled by the wind. This watersport is best suited for those who love the freedom of the open sea and crave a challenge. Using a large kite to capture the wind, kitesurfers can reach thrilling speeds and heights, performing aerial tricks and gliding along the water’s surface.
While kitesurfing might seem like a steep learning curve, cruise passengers often have access to expert instructors and ideal wind conditions in some of the world’s best locations for the sport. Popular cruise destinations for kitesurfing include Aruba, the Canary Islands, and Mauritius, where consistent winds and open waters make for prime conditions.
To start kitesurfing, it’s important to undergo proper training and familiarize yourself with the safety guidelines. Many cruisers begin by taking lessons during their trip, learning how to control the kite, launch it, and ride the waves. Kitesurfing schools are often located near ports and beaches where cruise ships dock, offering convenience for beginners and pros alike.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): A Calmer Approach
5 Trending Watersports All Cruise Enthusiasts Should Try 2
For those seeking a more serene connection to the water, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a great option. SUP involves standing on a large board and using a paddle to navigate across calm waters. It provides a great workout, testing both your balance and endurance, while also offering the opportunity to explore scenic coastlines and crystal-clear bays.
Cruise ships often carry SUP equipment onboard, allowing passengers to embark on SUP excursions at various destinations. SUP is a versatile activity that can be enjoyed in different environments, from exploring mangroves and lagoons to paddling along the shoreline of tropical islands. Some cruises even offer yoga sessions on SUP boards, combining fitness and tranquility in a unique experience.
The beauty of SUP lies in its accessibility—people of all ages and fitness levels can try it. The slow, steady pace allows participants to take in the sights and sounds of the ocean while getting a full-body workout. For more adventurous paddlers, SUP surfing—catching small waves while standing on your board—adds a new level of excitement.
Scuba Diving: Explore the Depths of the Ocean
For many cruise travelers, exploring beneath the waves is just as thrilling as riding them. Scuba diving allows you to immerse yourself in the underwater world, experiencing marine life in its natural habitat. Whether you’re swimming alongside vibrant coral reefs or exploring eerie shipwrecks, the opportunity to dive while on a cruise is an experience that should not be missed.
Many cruise lines offer diving excursions, providing the necessary equipment, transportation, and even certification courses for beginners. Popular diving spots for cruise passengers include the Great Barrier Reef, Cozumel, and the Red Sea. Depending on your destination, you could encounter colorful fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and even larger species like sharks and manta rays.
Before diving, it’s crucial to ensure you meet health and fitness requirements. Divers need to complete certification courses, which can be done before your trip or even onboard in some cases. It’s worth noting that environmental regulations protect many dive sites, ensuring the preservation of marine ecosystems. These rules are essential in promoting sustainable tourism. For more information on diving regulations and protected marine areas, you can visit the NOAA’s marine protected areas resource.
Jet Skiing: Speed Across the Water
Jet skiing remains among the most thrilling watersports, allowing enthusiasts to zoom across the water at exhilarating speeds. Jet skis are small, personal watercraft that are easy to maneuver, making them an excellent option for anyone looking for fast-paced fun. On many cruise excursions, you’ll find jet skiing opportunities along beautiful coastlines, offering a blend of sightseeing and excitement.
One of the benefits of jet skiing is that it requires very little experience to get started. Most cruise ships offer guided tours, where instructors teach you the basics and take you on a safe yet thrilling ride. Depending on the location, you might even ride through mangroves, open ocean waves, or along tropical beaches, adding a scenic element to the adventure.
Jet skiing is top-rated in destinations like the Bahamas, Hawaii, and the French Riviera, where calm waters and beautiful landscapes make for the perfect setting. Although it’s a high-speed watersport, jet skiing can be easily tailored to different skill levels, from gentle cruising to wild wave-hopping.
The Perfect Watersport Awaits on Your Next Cruise
The range of watersports available to cruise enthusiasts has never been more comprehensive, offering activities that cater to all interests and skill levels. From the thrilling speed of wake surfing to the tranquil balance of stand-up paddleboarding, there’s something for everyone to try during their next voyage.
Whether you prefer to glide above the water or explore the depths below, cruise lines make it easier to integrate these exciting activities into your travel itinerary. Prepare for your next adventure and ensure you’re ready to explore the sea from every possible angle.
