Crew Member Reported Overboard From Norwegian Breakaway Off Massachusetts Coast

A crew member from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway has gone overboard off the coast of Massachusetts while the ship was returning from a cruise to Bermuda.

The incident happened late on the evening of 25th April 2026 as the vessel sailed towards Boston. Security camera footage reportedly showed the crew member falling from the ship into the Atlantic Ocean around 12 miles off Wellfleet on Cape Cod.

Passengers on board were alerted to the emergency through a ship-wide man overboard announcement. According to witnesses, lifeboats were launched and the ship stopped while crews began searching the surrounding waters.

The Norwegian Breakaway was nearing the end of a 7-night Bermuda cruise and was due to arrive in Boston the following morning.

Search Operation Launched Overnight

Ship tracking data shows the vessel changed course at around 11:55 p.m. local time to begin a search and rescue operation. The ship remained in the area for roughly four hours before continuing towards Boston.

The U.S. Coast Guard joined the search after receiving the report from the ship. A rescue helicopter arrived just after 1:15 a.m., while crews from Coast Guard Station Provincetown were also deployed.

Another helicopter launched later on the morning of 26th April to continue the effort. However, the Coast Guard later confirmed that the search had been suspended just after midday pending any new information.

Helicopter evacuation

Passengers arriving in Boston were informed about the situation in a letter from the cruise line explaining the delay.

“Overnight and into the early morning hours, the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts following a man overboard situation, working closely with maritime authorities,” the letter said. “These efforts required the vessel’s full attention before the voyage could safely resume toward Boston. Situations such as these are never easy, and the safety and well-being of those at sea remain at the heart of every decision we make.”

The ship eventually docked at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal shortly before noon on Sunday. Embarkation for the next cruise was delayed later that afternoon due to the late arrival.

Passenger Describes Overnight Search

Some guests on board said they noticed unusual activity overnight as the search began.

Rebecca Durandisse, a passenger from Needham, Massachusetts, described waking during the operation.

“It’s very heartbreaking. This morning they ended up saying that someone went over, a crew went over the ledge,” she said. “I was in my estate room, lying in bed. I was drifting off to sleep when I noticed a light go on that woke me up, because I had my window open. And then I heard some loud noises.”

Authorities have not released the identity of the crew member, and it is not yet known what led to the fall.

Background On Overboard Incidents

Overboard incidents on cruise ships remain rare but they do occur several times each year across the global cruise fleet.

Cruise industry researcher Dr Ross Klein has previously recorded more than 400 overboard incidents from cruise ships since the year 2000, involving both passengers and crew members.

Investigations into such cases typically rely on security footage, witness reports and ship data to determine what happened. Cruise ships are also required under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act to use technology capable of capturing images or detecting people who fall overboard where such systems are available.

At the time of writing, Norwegian Cruise Line has not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
