The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees has postponed a vote on a proposed agreement with Royal Caribbean for a fifth cruise terminal at Pier 14, leaving the project in active negotiations rather than moving it to final approval.
Chron reporter Chris Gray, who attended the Aug. 25 board meeting, reported that trustee Erik Stramblad said the board remains supportive of the concept but wants additional discussion on several important details. Port planning documents call for Royal Caribbean to build the terminal while the port would finance major waterside and parking improvements. The proposed facility is intended to accommodate Icon-class ships and would be part of a broader Pier 14 redevelopment. The earliest opening discussed is 2030.
