Royal Caribbean Confirms Ship Swap As Freedom Of The Seas To Replace Mariner In Southampton For 2027

Royal Caribbean has confirmed a significant deployment change for 2027, with Freedom of the Seas set to take over Southampton sailings from Mariner of the Seas as part of a wider fleet reshuffle.

Freedom of the Seas

The move clarifies earlier cancellations affecting Mariner of the Seas, with the cruise line now confirming that the ship will be redeployed elsewhere while Freedom of the Seas assumes its planned UK programme.

The 3,960-passenger Freedom of the Seas, which first entered service in 2006, will operate from Southampton between May and October 2027. The vessel is slightly larger than the 3,344-passenger Mariner of the Seas and had originally been scheduled to sail from Miami during that period.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that Freedom of the Seas will sail on the same departure dates previously assigned to Mariner of the Seas, although some itineraries have been revised, with certain ports changed or removed.

“As part of our ongoing itinerary planning process, which sometimes requires flexibility due to scheduling, port agreements or operational needs, the Mariner of the Seas will be redeployed for our summer 2027 season,

“We know how much effort goes into planning your vacation and apologize for the inconvenience.”

What Freedom Of The Seas Will Offer From Southampton

From its new UK homeport, Freedom of the Seas is expected to operate a series of itineraries to Northern and Western Europe throughout the summer season.

Freedom is larger and does have slightly more to offer UK guests. She’ll also offer more of a continuation since her sister ships Independence of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas have been the ships sailing out of Southampton for the past few years.

While many sailings will mirror those originally planned for Mariner of the Seas, some adjustments have already been made, meaning guests may see differences in ports of call or route structure.

Passengers who were originally booked on Mariner sailings are being given the option to transfer to the equivalent Freedom of the Seas cruise, often on the same date, with the cruise line aiming to provide a like-for-like replacement where possible.

Guests who take no action will automatically be moved to a comparable stateroom onboard Freedom of the Seas.

Other options include rebooking onto a different Royal Caribbean sailing, with change fees waived, or cancelling for a full refund of the cruise fare paid. However, passengers switching to a more expensive sailing will need to pay any fare difference.

Mariner Of The Seas Set For New Deployment

While Royal Caribbean has not fully detailed Mariner of the Seas’ new summer programme, the ship is now expected to reposition away from the UK ahead of the season.

Mariner of the Seas

A 17-night transatlantic sailing departing New Orleans on 24th April 2027 will see the vessel head to the Mediterranean, calling at ports including Casablanca, Tangier and Málaga before arriving in Barcelona.

This suggests the ship will spend at least part of the summer season operating in Europe outside of the UK market, although further itinerary details have yet to be confirmed.

The swap highlights how Royal Caribbean continues to adjust its deployments in response to operational needs and demand, with Southampton remaining a key base for the line’s European operations despite the change in ships.
