Large cruise ship docked in Halifax harbor under overcast autumn skies

Royal Caribbean Extends Oasis of the Seas’ Halifax Stop to a Full Day

Royal Caribbean has extended the unplanned Halifax, Nova Scotia stop on Oasis of the Seas’ current sailing, giving guests a full day in port rather than the brief overnight call originally announced after the ship’s itinerary was changed to avoid severe weather.

The 5,602-guest ship departed Cape Liberty, New Jersey on Sunday, October 18, 2026 for what was meant to be a seven-night cruise to Port Canaveral, Perfect Day CocoCay, and Nassau. Instead, Royal Caribbean rerouted the ship to Halifax to steer clear of high winds and strong swells building off the eastern seaboard. Guests learned of the change the evening before sailing, a late notice that left some travelers disappointed to be trading a tropical itinerary for cooler autumn weather in Atlantic Canada.

From a Brief Overnight to a Full Day Ashore

The initial revised schedule had Oasis of the Seas docked in Halifax for just 14 hours, arriving at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20 and departing at 8 a.m. the following morning. Many guests felt that was not enough time to make the most of an unexpected port call, even accounting for the necessity of avoiding rough seas.

Royal Caribbean has since informed guests that the ship’s stay will now run until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, extending the visit by an additional 10 hours. In a letter delivered to staterooms, the line said it had been able to “secure additional flexibility for guests during our overnight stay” and would now offer “a full day to explore Halifax.” The captain also announced the extension onboard, and details have been updated in the Royal Caribbean app.

The ship’s original arrival time in Halifax remains unchanged; only the departure has been pushed back. With no other ports on the revised itinerary, the rest of the cruise consists of sea days, and the ship remains on track to return to Cape Liberty on Sunday, October 25 at approximately 6 a.m.

What It Means for Guests Onboard

For passengers aboard, the extra time in Halifax means more opportunity to book shore excursions, explore the city independently, or enjoy a meal ashore before returning to the ship. Tours can be arranged through the Royal Caribbean app or at the Shore Excursions Desk onboard.

Royal Caribbean has not changed the compensation package already offered because of the itinerary disruption. Guests in inside and outside staterooms are receiving $200 in onboard credit per person, balcony guests $300, and suite guests $600, with an additional $100 per person for third or higher occupants sharing a stateroom. Travelers are also being given a future cruise credit worth 50% of their paid fare, valid on bookings made by October 18, 2027, with the credit itself to be issued by November 1, 2026.

Weather-Related Changes Remain Possible

This is not the first time this season that a Royal Caribbean ship has had to alter course for weather along the East Coast, underscoring how unpredictable autumn storm patterns can disrupt even well-planned Caribbean itineraries. For cruisers booked on similar sailings later in the season, it’s a reminder to keep travel insurance in mind and to stay flexible, since itinerary changes driven by safety concerns can happen with little notice. Royal Caribbean has indicated no further changes are expected for this particular sailing beyond the extended Halifax call.
