Wonder Of The Seas Gangway Plunges Into Sea In Viral Port Mishap

A dramatic video showing the gangway from Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas falling into the sea has gone viral on TikTok, with thousands of viewers reacting to the unusual incident.

The footage, filmed from the neighbouring Allure of the Seas, appears to show the Oasis-class ship alongside Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, as crew prepare the vessel for departure.

The clip, which will be embedded below, captures the final stages of bringing the gangway back onboard before it unexpectedly slips free and falls into the water.

Crew members can then be seen looking over the side of the ship as the gangway disappears beneath the surface, while the shoreside forklift involved in the operation drives away from the scene.

There has been no indication that anyone was injured during the incident, and Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on what caused the gangway to be lost.

Viral Video Sparks Thousands Of Reactions

The mishap quickly caught the attention of social media users, with the video attracting more than 3,200 comments as viewers speculated about what had happened and joked about the unexpected loss.

Many comments focused on the forklift operator, whose departure immediately after the incident became one of the most talked-about moments in the clip.

One user wrote: “The guy with the forklift just drove away and was like that’s not my problem 😂”

Another joked: “Forklift driver: ‘Look at that… it’s time for my lunch break!’ 😂”

Others questioned why the gangway operation appeared to rely on manual handling rather than an automated system.

“$700mil ship and they still don’t have an automated ramp that can pull itself in or out. or a rope. 😂” one commenter wrote.

Another added: “I find it hilarious that a ship of that size and value doesn’t have a powered system to bring the walkway in and out.”

Several viewers also speculated about whether the gangway would be recovered, with one comment suggesting: “They’ll retrieve it with a crane at some point.”

Others claimed that divers would likely be sent to locate the equipment before it could be lifted back to the surface, although there has been no official confirmation about any recovery operation.

As with many viral cruise videos, the comments quickly filled with humour. One of the most popular jokes read: “And now it’s Part Of The Seas,” while another user quipped: “I take a lot of cruises so I feel confident in saying that this is not supposed to happen.”

Gangways Are Typically Supplied By The Port

Although many cruise passengers assume gangways are permanently attached to ships, they are often portable units supplied and positioned by the port or terminal, particularly when large ships call at destinations such as private islands.

The equipment is designed to bridge the gap between the vessel and the pier, with shoreside teams and shipboard crew working together during embarkation and before departure to remove it safely.

While incidents involving gangways are uncommon, they are not unheard of. Large portable gangways weigh several tonnes and require careful coordination between port staff and the ship’s crew during positioning and removal.

In this case, the exact cause of the incident remains unclear. The video alone does not show enough to determine whether it resulted from a communication issue, equipment failure or another factor.

Wonder of the Seas, one of the world’s largest cruise ships, entered service in 2022 and carries up to nearly 7,000 guests at full capacity. The vessel regularly visits Perfect Day at CocoCay as part of Caribbean itineraries departing from Florida.
