Heald Responds to Requests for More Child-Free Sailings

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, once again took on a hot topic this morning with a Facebook post about adult-only cruises.  These sailings have been wildly popular with fans of the cruise line, and apparently cruisers want more.

Two Carnival cruise ships in port, Carnival Sunshine and Liberty

A recent social media post from Heald responding to a fan has been racking up comments this morning.  A parent of three kids already out of the house asked Carnival to “give a little attention to us cruisers without children.”

The cruiser said that they love family cruising but “would like for a change to cruise without having to endure other people’s children.”

Heald responded, while making sure everyone knows the cruise line isn’t trying to reinvent itself.

“We are and always will be a proud family cruise line,” he wrote. “However, I have seen how extraordinarily popular the adult only cruises that we have done so far have been.”

He went on to say how surprisingly popular these special itineraries were and the mix of passengers they attract.

“Lots of the people who have taken these adults only cruises still cruise with their children but enjoy a chance to not do so,” he said, adding that, for some, “cruises with your children isn’t a vacation… just a relocation.”

Carnival’s upcoming schedule includes adult-only sailings departing in 2026 from Port Canaveral, PortMiami, and Galveston on Carnival Dream and Carnival Glory.

Many of these are already sold out, which could be a sign that cruisers are seeking quieter decks as they enjoy a getaway at sea.

Cruise Fever has previously reported that Carnival’s first official SEA (“Sailings Exclusively for Adults”) voyage took place in August of 2025 on Carnival Conquest. The 10-night Southern Caribbean sailing was Carnival’s first entry into the adults-only cruise niche.

From January to March 2026, Carnival plans additional SEA sailings from PortMiami, Port Canaveral, and Galveston. Booking one is simple. Guests can visit Carnival.com, log into (or create) their free VIFP account, and check the “offers” section for available SEA cruises. These voyages come with perks like up to $25 in onboard credit, “Drinks On Us, and deposits starting at $99 per person.

It’s worth noting that these SEA cruises are designed specifically for casino guests, which is why they are limited to those 21 and older. On the Conquest sailing, Carnival even added 75 extra slot machines and four blackjack tables to meet the higher gaming demand.

Heald was quick to clarify that the introduction of adults-only sailings doesn’t signal a shift in Carnival’s overall family focus. “We are and always will be a proud family cruise line,” he said, adding, “I think we have perhaps stumbled across a secret.”

With adult-only sailings selling out quickly and Carnival fans asking for more, it sounds like Carnival might have found a popular strategy.  And it’s one that lets parents trade the family vacation for a little peace, quiet, while still offering family-friendly vacations on 29 ships in the fleet.

Cruise Line Creating “130-Year-Old” Cabin on One of Their Ships

In 2026, a cruise line is celebrating their 130 anniversary of offering expedition cruises. To celebrate the historic achievement, they are creating a 130-year-old cabin that you can stay in on one of their cruise ships.

1896 cabin
The 1896 Cabin on MS Fridtjof Nansen

The 1896 Cabin will be added to MS Fridjof Nansen, a ship that sails with HX Expeditions. The cabin will transport guests back to the year when the cruise line started sailing.

The cabin will launch on January 29, 2026 and will be available for the rest of the year.

This limited-edition experience will allow guests to spend one unforgettable night in a meticulously recreated late 19th-century expedition cabin. It will be complete with handcrafted period furnishings, authentic scents, and curated touches.

1896 cabin

The 1896 Cabin experience will include the following:

  • Immersive historical setting – stay just as polar explorers did in 1896
  • Special in-cabin touches – inspired by 19th-century voyages
  • Strictly limited availability – one night per guest, per sailing
  • Check-in/Check-out times – 2 pm and 11 am

The 1896 Cabin will cost €450 per night (single or double occupancy). Guests will only be allowed to stay one night in the cabin on each voyage, this will allow multiple guests to enjoy this throwback cabin on each cruise.

1896 cabin

50% of all profits from this cabin will be donated to the HX Foundation, supporting its ambitious fleet-wide anniversary fundraising goal of £130,000.

Gebhard Rainer, CEO of HX, gave the following statement:

“The 1896 Cabin is a chance for our guests to not just see history, but to live and sleep in it. As we celebrate 130 years of pioneering journeys, we wanted to create an experience that is immersive, atmospheric, and meaningful – connecting our guests to our amazing heritage while helping fund the future of exploration and conservation through the HX Foundation.”

1896 Cabin

Mantas Lataitis, Head of Design at AROS Marine, added:

“Designing the HX 1896 Cabin to life has been a journey into history as much as it has into design. Our expert design team have meticulously researched expedition cabins from the late 19th century, studying every detail from furnishings to lighting and materials, to create an authentic experience that honors HX Expeditions’ heritage.

“Collaborating closely with the VP, Hotel Operations Stefan Engl at HX, we’ve aimed to transport guests back in time while ensuring comfort and craftsmanship meet the adventure mode.”

1 Out of Every 16 Americans Expected to Take a Cruise in 2026

If you’re looking to take a cruise next year, you’re not alone. Almost 22 million Americans are expected to sail away in 2026, according to AAA’s latest forecast for the cruise industry.

Icon of the Seas and MSC World American in PortMiami

AAA gives this forecast every year, and the 21.7 million U.S. residents that are expected to cruise next year mark the largest number recorded by the association.  In addition to next year’s record-breaking number, this is also the fourth year in a row that the forecast has outdone the previous year.

Apparently, the cruise industry keeps growing as cruise lines keep building ships to keep up with the demand.

What has spurred on the spike in demand over the last several years? A large part of the story is the rebound after the shutdown of 2020-2021, but the variety a cruise offers travelers on vacation is a huge part of the draw as well.

“These numbers reflect the growing demand for ocean cruises among U.S. travelers,” Vice President of AAA Travel, Stacey Barber said.

“Our travel agents see this every day when booking dream vacations for AAA members. Whether it’s an anniversary trip to relax in the Caribbean or a family reunion to explore Alaska, ocean cruises offer variety, convenience, and lifelong memories.”

Yearly Numbers

For context, these were the cruise passenger forecasts over the last several years put out by AAA:

  • 2018: 1 million
  • 2019: 2 million
  • 2020: 7 million
  • 2021: 2 million
  • 2022: 9 million
  • 2023: 9 million
  • 2025: 7 million
  • 2026: 7 million

The Demographic Cruising the Most

Cruises appeal to a wide variety of age ranges, with some cruise lines being family friendly and others restricting children from being on board altogether.

But the age group that plans to cruise the most are passengers 55 and older, and by a wide margin.  65% of all American passengers are expected to be in this age bracket.  27% are expected to be 35-54 and 7% in the 18-34 age range.

What about families with kids?  AAA says that about 20% will be cruising with kids, while on the other end of the spectrum are the solo cruisers which will make up about 7% of U.S. cruisers.

Ports of Embarkation

Florida, as always, is the cruise center of the U.S. Ports like PortMiami, Port Everglades, and Port Canaveral will see millions of travelers embarking next year, boosting South Florida’s local economy with jobs, hotel stays, and business for area shops and restaurants.

AAA expects 10.2% of cruisers to sail out of Miami, with 8.8% sailing from Port Canaveral, 5.6% out of Fort Lauderdale, and 4.1 % from Galveston.

So, it looks like the Caribbean will once again be the most popular destination for Americans to visit on a cruise ship with about 72% of passengers visiting the popular region.

Bottom Line

The pace of growth over last year is a projected 4.5% rise for 2026 compared to an 8.4% jump this year.  The cruise market appears to be maturing rather than weakening. Demand remains strong, so if a cruise is on your 2026 wishlist, you should probably start planning now.

As almost one in every sixteen Americans prepares to set sail next year, it’s clear that this carefree type of vacation has become a yearly thing for many.  Can’t say I blame them!

Norwegian Epic Rescues 67 Refugees in the Mediterranean

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic came to the aid of dozens of people in distress after spotting an overcrowded sailboat in the Mediterranean Sea on the night of 22nd October 2025.

Norwegian Epic rescuing refugees

The dramatic rescue took place during the early stages of the ship’s 11-night round-trip cruise to the Greek Isles and Italy, which had departed from Civitavecchia (Rome) just a day earlier.

Guests onboard said the 4,070-passenger vessel stopped suddenly after the small boat was sighted, and that the rescue operation lasted several hours.

“We had to stop in the middle of the Med and rescue 67 migrants that were in a 30-foot sailboat,” one passenger wrote on Reddit. “It took a few hours for the crew to get them onboard.”

The Norwegian Epic, which measures in at 155,873 gross tonnes, would have been sailing southeast towards Santorini, the first scheduled port of call, when the operation took place.

A Law of the Sea

Under international maritime law – specifically the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention – ships are legally and morally obliged to assist anyone in distress at sea, provided doing so does not endanger passengers or crew.

Norwegian Epic

Once safely aboard, rescued individuals are typically given food, water, medical checks and temporary shelter in a restricted area away from paying guests.

They are then handed over to local authorities at the next available port.

Although Norwegian Cruise Line has yet to issue an official statement, passengers praised the crew’s professionalism and compassion throughout the ordeal.

Port Change and Missed Call

The humanitarian diversion did have an operational consequence: the ship’s planned call to Santorini on 23rd October was cancelled.

Guests awoke to find the Epic docking at a mainland Greek port instead, where the 67 refugees were transferred to the Greek Coast Guard.

“We were supposed to hand them over in Santorini, but the authorities wanted them brought to the mainland,” the same cruiser explained. “I’m a bit disappointed to miss Santorini again, but it’s understandable.”

After completing the handover, the Norwegian Epic resumed her planned route and made her expected call at Piraeus (Athens) on 24th October, with Mykonos, Valletta, Syracuse, Salerno, Livorno, and Cannes to follow, before returning to Rome on 1st November 2025.

Not the First Rescue

It’s not the first time a cruise ship has diverted to help migrants in the Mediterranean, where small, overcrowded vessels regularly get into difficulty.

Cruise lines – particularly those operating between Italy, Greece, and Malta – have frequently participated in rescues at sea over the years, often in coordination with European coastguards.

While some passengers expressed disappointment over the missed port, most agreed that the crew did exactly what was required – putting human life above all else.

American Cruise Passenger Deported From Italy After Gun Found in Backpack

A 77-year-old cruise passenger from the United States has been deported from Italy after security officers discovered a loaded firearm in his backpack at the Porto Corsini Cruise Terminal in Ravenna.

Cruise ship gun

The man, who had travelled from Tennessee with his son to join a cruise holiday, was stopped during routine screening when the terminal’s X-ray machine revealed a 6.35mm Browning semi-automatic pistol.

Authorities confirmed that the weapon was fully loaded, with a magazine inserted and one round already chambered – meaning it could have fired.

The traveller told officials that he held a valid gun licence in the United States and had simply “forgotten” that the firearm was in his bag.

Strict Firearm Laws in Italy

Italian gun laws are among the strictest in Europe, and firearm permits are rarely issued to tourists, regardless of documentation from their home country.

Bringing a weapon into the country without prior authorisation can result in severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.

Old looking architecture at Ravenna
Ravenna

In this case, Italian police seized the weapon, charged the man with illegal firearm possession, and promptly deported him.

A similar incident occurred earlier this year in Japan, when a 73-year-old American passenger was arrested at Kobe Cruise Terminal for attempting to board with a handgun in his luggage.

A Costly Mistake

The passenger’s deportation meant the abrupt end of his holiday – and possibly more lasting consequences. Cruise lines strictly prohibit weapons of any kind onboard, and carrying one can lead to a lifetime ban.

Even if the guest genuinely forgot about the gun, cruise operators must assume zero tolerance for such security breaches.

Carnival Cruise Line, for example, banned two passengers for life in 2024 after they smuggled a gun onto a ship and boasted about it on social media. Earlier this year, another cruiser was arrested in Aruba while attempting to board Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas with a firearm.

Even toy weapons, such as replica or Nerf-style blasters, are forbidden as they could easily cause confusion or alarm.

Security staff at ports and onboard ships are trained to treat any potential weapon as a real threat until proven otherwise.

Possible Ship Identified

Authorities have not confirmed which cruise ship the man had been due to board.

However, local reports suggest it was a vessel sailing from Ravenna to Croatia and concluding in Civitavecchia (Rome) – an itinerary that matches Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Constellation, which departed on 20th October 2025.

Celebrity Constellation

That sailing is an 11-night voyage through Croatia, Montenegro, and Italy, making it the most likely match.

By contrast, Celebrity Eclipse and Mein Schiff 6 both visited Ravenna earlier in October but did not continue to Rome. The next cruise call to the port is scheduled for 5th November 2025, when Norwegian Viva arrives – hopefully under calmer circumstances.
