8 Reasons Why Family Cruise Holidays Are Fantastic

Cruise holidays are a bit different than other types of travel, and if you’ve never been on a cruise before, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the information and choices that you’re faced with when you come to book one.

The first thing you should decide, before anything else, is whether or not a cruise holiday would be a good idea for your family.

Family pool on a Disney cruise

First, let’s talk about all the reasons why cruise holidays are brilliant for families. Then, to keep things balanced, we’ll address any reasons why a cruise might not be right for you.

First, the fun stuff. Here are the top reasons why cruises can make the perfect family holidays…

1. Nobody Will Ever Be Bored – Guaranteed!

Swimming pools, water slides, splash parks, rock climbing walls, laser tag, surfing simulators, ice skating, bumper cars, trampolines, escape rooms, arcades – the list of activities available on board today’s modern cruise ships is seemingly endless!

And if you’re wondering how much all that is going to cost you, you’ll be pleased to know that the vast majority of on-board activities are included on typical cruise ship holidays. Yay!

Plus, with a different destination to explore each day that the ship docks, you can take your pick from the best theme parks, water parks, animal attractions, museums and beaches in each port of call.

If there’s one thing that you will never ever hear on a cruise holiday, it’s “Mummy, I’m bored.”

2. You Don’t Have To Spend The Whole Holiday With Your Kids

Do you feel guilty at the thought of dumping your kids in childcare whilst you sunbathe by the pool with a book? Well, quite frankly, there’s no need to.

Cruise ship kids’ clubs offer the world’s best holiday childcare, so you can relax knowing that your children are well-cared for by qualified staff… and that they’re having loads of fun.

Open from early morning until late in the evening, some parents hardly see their kids for the whole cruise! And this isn’t because they don’t want to, but because they can’t prise their brood away from the activities of the kids’ club.

Split into several age groups, from pre-schoolers to teens, kids’ clubs offer safe, supervised activities which are both fun and educational.

Activities include arts and crafts, cookery classes, treasure hunts, sports and games, dancing, circus skills, games console tournaments, board games, competitions, movie nights and themed parties. And the best bit? It’s all free of charge.

3. Fussy Eaters Are Well-Catered For

Cruise ship food is so delicious – you’re pretty much guaranteed to put on half a stone in a week. Included in the price of your cruise is dining at a number of venues, such as the main dining room, the buffet restaurant, snack bars and sometimes even room service.

In case that isn’t enough, additional restaurants are also available for a small supplement. Here you can enjoy Michelin-star cuisine with menus designed by celebrity chefs for a fraction of what the same dining experience would cost on land.

On many cruises, you’ll find that the menu is inspired by the ports of call that your ship visits, with authentic local produce brought into the kitchen during the cruise. This is a great way to get kids to try new foods from around the world, without worrying about paying for a dish that they don’t like!

In the main dining room, children can order the usual favourites off the kids’ menu, or, a smaller portion of anything they like from the main menu. In the buffet, the options are seemingly endless and ever-changing.

Cruise ship buffets are open from breakfast right through to late evening, so if you fancy a snack between meals, there’s always plenty to choose from.

4. Cruising Is So Much Easier Than Flying

Hands up who likes flying with kids? Are your hands down? Thought so.

There’s parking the car, airport security, a cramped flight, sore ears, nappy changes in an aeroplane toilet, tired and cranky kids, more airport palaver and then getting to your hotel at some ungodly hour. Urgh!

With a cruise holiday, UK cruisers can sail from Southampton. Other local ports are available, but this is the main one where most of the family ships sail from.

You can park your car by the ship, and a member of staff will come and take your cases from your car boot and deliver them straight up to your cabin for you. Then you just check-in and walk onto the ship to start your holiday.

Now, tell me again why you were considering flying?

5. You Can Say Goodbye To Luggage Limits

Another great thing about not flying is that you have no limit on the amount of luggage you can take with you.

As someone who’s cruised with a baby and a toddler and is all too familiar with how much crap they need, this is a massive plus point. Some cruise lines will even let you shove a litre of wine in your suitcase if you want!

Prefer to pack light? You’ll find free-of-charge laundry rooms on many ships, should you need to wash anything.

6. There’s A Choice Of Accommodation To Suit Every Budget

There’s a huge choice of different accommodation types on board each ship, from inside cabins, cabins with windows and balconies, inter-connecting cabins and family staterooms, right up to the most luxurious of suites.

From a small double room with extra beds that pull down from the ceiling, to huge multi-storey suites with private hot tubs on the balcony, you’ll find accommodation to suit every taste and budget.

7. The Evening Entertainment Is Fantastic

I must admit, I never really enjoyed the evening entertainment that I’ve found in many of the European hotels I’ve stayed in. Kids’ discos, quiz nights, bingo, singers, yawn! I’ve often found myself in bed by 9pm.

On a cruise ship, it’s so different.

Each night there’ll be a show at the theatre. These shows are of a standard easily as high as the West End or Broadway. And they’re free! There’s also lots of live music as well as comedians and other acts, so you have a choice of entertainment each evening.

Actors acting for a performance on stage

If you want a bit of couple-time in there whilst the children are enjoying a pyjama party in the kids’ club, head to the casino, nightclub, or enjoy a late-night hot tub under the stars.

8. Cruises Offer Great Value For Money

The price of your cruise ticket includes accommodation, meals and snacks, selected non-alcoholic drinks, kids’ clubs, activities and entertainment.

You don’t have to pay for anything else if you don’t want to. A travel agent can also arrange flights, transfers and hotels to create you a package deal.

Extras that you can pay for include drinks, dining in speciality restaurants, spa treatments, guided excursions and WiFi. Policies on whether or not you’re expected to tip the ship’s staff vary by cruise line.

You might think that, as you’re a captive market, the cruise lines could take the mickey with the price of things like drinks. But they don’t tend to, and on many ships you’ll find the drinks prices to be similar to those in your local pub. Plus, if you’d prefer to go all-inclusive, drinks packages are available.

If you add up how much you spend on a land-based holiday compared to cruise holidays for families, then you’ll most likely find that the cruise holiday comes out cheaper.

Some destinations such as Norway, Belgium and Iceland can be eye-wateringly expensive once you get there. So, if you’re planning on visiting any of these, a cruise is likely to be the most cost-effective way to do it. Plus, on a land-based holiday, you probably won’t budget for watching Broadway-standard shows almost every night!

Is A Cruise Holiday Right For You?

With so many great reasons to book family cruise holidays, it’s no wonder that cruising is so addictive. And it really is addictive!

So are you raring to go ahead and book your first cruise? Or do you have some niggling doubts? Perhaps you’re worried about seasickness, hidden charges or the effect of the buffet on your waistline.

Have you cruised as a family before? How did it compare to other holidays you’ve taken?

British Cruise Line To Break Tradition With Two BRAND NEW Cruise Ships? Here’s What We Know…

One of the best-loved cruise brands aimed at British guests has revealed that it is considering adding two more ships to the fleet – but with a huge twist.

Cruise Mummy with Marella Ship

For the first time ever, the cruise line may build brand-new ships, rather than purchasing older ships and refurbishing them.

Marella Cruises offers All Inclusive cruise experiences as part of the TUI Group. There are currently five ships in the fleet, although all have been purchased from other cruise lines before being given a considerate renovation.

Despite the amazing work that Marella does with these ship refurbishments, the CEO of TUI Group has admitted that they are in discussions to potentially add two new builds to the fleet.

Speaking at TUI’s Capital Markets Day 2025, Sebastian Ebel highlighted how well Marella Cruises is doing and how there is definitely a market for expanding the fleet.

“We are in discussions with shipyards, and we are currently considering ordering two vessels based on a design customised for the UK market.

“New-build slots are tentatively available from FY31 onwards. We may secure a slot for two new ships, which would be a great step forward if we do it alone or if we do it as a joint venture, which is also something we are in discussion about.

“It may or may not happen, it is not a done deal but we are confident it is good to talk about it,”

Sebastian Ebel, TUI Group CEO

The current fleet

There are currently five ships in the Marella fleet, all of which have sailed previously for other cruise lines.

Several of Marella’s ships originally belonged to Celebrity Cruises, a premium brand under the Royal Caribbean Group.

Marella Voyager began life as Celebrity Mercury before transitioning to the German brand TUI Cruises, where she was renamed Mein Schiff 2 and later Mein Schiff Herz.

Similarly, Marella Explorer and Marella Explorer 2 started as Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Century, respectively, before being handed over to TUI Cruises and SkySea Cruise Line.

Marella’s fleet also includes two ships that originally sailed for Royal Caribbean International. Marella Discovery and Marella Discovery 2 were previously known as Splendour of the Seas and Legend of the Seas.

These ships were built in the mid-1990s and were part of Royal Caribbean’s expansion at the time.

They introduced ground-breaking features like glass-walled atriums and rock climbing walls, which Marella retained when they joined the fleet.

What sets Marella Cruises apart is its commitment to providing an All Inclusive experience for all guests. This means that dining, drinks, and even flights are all included in the price of the ticket, offering great value without the unexpected expenses often associated with cruising.

From relaxed dining options to cocktails by the pool, guests can enjoy a stress-free experience, knowing that they won’t have to worry about additional charges while onboard.

And if the cruise line does press ahead with the option to build two brand-new ships, it would represent a huge shift from tradition – and be extremely exciting for British travellers.

Carnival-Solo-cruise.jpg

New Study Highlights Rise In Solo Travel

The number of people choosing to see the world on their own terms is soaring, with searches for “solo travel tips” increasing by a staggering 5,043% over the past year.

A woman in a bright pink polka dot dress stands at the railing of a Carnival Cruise ship, gazing out at the expansive ocean under a clear blue sky. Her long blonde hair is held back by red sunglasses, and the serene scene captures the tranquility of a solo cruise experience.

And with more than 6,000 articles published on the trend in the same period, it’s clear that solo adventures have become more than just a travel niche – they’re a global movement.

A recent survey by Solo Traveler World found that 66% of solo travellers say they simply didn’t want to wait for others to explore the world.

Another 57% cited the freedom to do what they want, when they want, as the main driver for hitting the road solo.

With over a third prioritising destinations offering adventure activities and 41% choosing places for their landmarks or natural wonders, solo travellers are a varied and curious bunch.

But while the benefits are many, travelling alone also comes with unique challenges – especially when things go wrong.

So Alvaro Iturmendi, a travel insurance expert at Confused.com, has shared some top tips for solo travellers and how to make sure they get the best insurance possible:

1. Medical coverage

Falling ill abroad is never ideal, but doing so while alone can be daunting. Alvaro explains:

“Having access to quality medical care is essential when you’re travelling solo. A comprehensive travel insurance plan should cover emergency medical expenses, including hospital stays, doctor consultations, prescription medication, and even medical evacuation if required.

“This means you’ll get the necessary treatment without the financial burden of unexpected healthcare costs abroad.”

2. Trip cancellations or interruptions

Plans change – and for solo travellers, disruptions can feel even more overwhelming.

“If illness, a family emergency or even a weather event means you have to cancel or cut your trip short, insurance can help you reclaim non-refundable costs like flights, hotels, and tours.

“That extra layer of reassurance is especially valuable when you’re managing everything solo,”

3. Theft and loss protection

Visiting bustling markets or iconic sites is a major part of the solo experience, but these places are also hotspots for pickpocketing.

“Solo travellers are solely responsible for their belongings, making them easy targets,

“Good travel insurance will cover loss or theft of passports, electronics, and luggage, and even offer emergency cash if you lose access to your funds.”

4. Adventure activity cover

Whether it’s surfing, diving, or hiking volcanoes, many solo travellers plan their trips around adrenaline-pumping activities. But not all standard policies cover them.

“If your trip includes skiing, bungee jumping, or scuba diving, make sure your insurance includes adventure activity coverage. Some policies include these as standard, but it’s always worth checking so you’re not left unprotected,”

Solo cruising – the best way to travel alone?

Solo cruising is becoming an increasingly popular option for those looking to explore the world on their own terms.

With more cruise lines offering solo cabin options and dedicated spaces for solo travellers, it’s easier than ever to enjoy a cruise without the hassle of high supplement fees.

In fact, many cruise lines are recognising the demand for solo travel and are introducing features specifically designed for solo cruisers, such as solo lounges, single-occupancy cabins, and activities tailored for those travelling alone.

Solo cruises can be incredibly safe, thanks to the numerous amenities and onboard security measures cruise lines implement.

Many solo cruisers feel more comfortable on ships, knowing they’re surrounded by a supportive crew and fellow passengers, offering a sense of community.

Additionally, cruise ships provide a structured environment that can make solo travellers feel secure while still offering freedom and flexibility to explore destinations independently.

However, it’s important to watch out for certain pitfalls.

If you’re not booking a dedicated solo cabin, you could end up paying hefty solo supplements, which are extra fees charged to solo travellers staying in a cabin designed for two. These charges can significantly increase the overall cost of the trip.

Additionally, it’s crucial to secure cruise-specific insurance when travelling solo. Regular travel insurance may not cover all the unique aspects of cruising, such as trip interruption due to ship-specific delays or medical coverage on board.

Make sure to choose a policy that covers both the cruise itself and the activities you plan to do on your voyage.

In short, solo cruising offers a fantastic way to experience the world, with plenty of opportunities to meet new people, relax, and enjoy your own company, all while cruising in safety and comfort.

Just make sure to plan ahead and book the right accommodations and insurance to make your solo adventure as smooth as possible.

15 Reasons Marella Cruises Are Great For Kids

Cruising with kids can be a dream or a disaster — but with Marella Cruises, it’s definitely the first one!

From splash pools to kids’ clubs, rock climbing walls to family discos, they’ve got everything to keep little cruisers happy while giving parents a well-earned break.

Marella cruises with kids

Whether you’re sailing with toddlers, tweens or teens, Marella makes family holidays stress-free and seriously fun.

Here are what my kids and I love about Marella’s family offering…

1. M Club

The M Club is a place where you can drop off your 3- to 11-year-olds and they’ll enjoy fun activities in the care of qualified childcare professionals.

There are a few things that set Marella’s kids club apart from some of the others.

Firstly, let’s talk about the age groupings. Usually, cruise ships are super strict about which kids can go in each group, based on their age. This means that my 7-year-old and my 10-year-old are used to being split up. But of course, most kids will want to stay with their siblings, right?

M Club

On a Marella cruise, there are sessions where all ages can play together.

Some sessions are split by age (3-7 and 8-11). But they said that if our older child wants to join the younger group to be with her brother, then that’s not a problem.

Unlike on other cruises we’ve been on, the kids club doesn’t just stay in the one room. They go to other venues like the theatre or the nightclub (before it opens for adults) to enjoy certain activities.

Marella Funfair

The fun continues until 9.30pm. While our kids were expecting to just watch a movie in the evening, they were pleased to discover the fun and games continued all evening on most days.

2. The Hideout

12- to 17-year-olds have access to their own venue – The Hideout. Located well away from the kids’ club, teens can pop in here whenever they like.

Mar

There are organised activities at certain times, like arts and crafts or sports tournaments. Outside of these times, they can just chill out and use the facilities.

On Marella Explorer (the ship we sailed on), those included air hockey and table football tables. They’re free to play, so won’t have to worry about running up a bill for credits!

3. Mini M Club

Under-threes can attend Mini M Club with their parents. This is a dedicated room for babies with toys for them. At certain times of the day there will be activities, like Bubble Play Time.

cruise with a baby

Yes, this is listed as being for the babies, but really, it’s the perfect spot for mums and dads to meet and have a chat too.

4. Kids Pools

Of course, kids are welcome in the main pools, but some ships also have dedicated kids pools which are perfect for those who can’t swim yet or who want to splash around without worrying about splashing the adults.

On Marella Explorer, the kids pool even has a small slide. It’s under cover too, to keep little ones out of the hot sun.

Marella Explorer splash pool

5. Rock Climbing Walls

If you cruise on Marella Discovery or Marella Discovery 2, then your family can enjoy the rock climbing walls. Kids need to be six or over to take part.

Marella Discovery 2 climbing wall

These ships used to belong to Royal Caribbean, and when they were launched, rock climbing walls were the big new things. I love that Marella has kept them since acquiring the ships.

6. Mini Golf

Each Marella ship comes with its own mini golf course, which is the perfect family activity for kids of all ages. There’s no need to book or sign out the equipment, you can just turn up and play whenever the mood takes you.

Playhing golf on Marella cruise

7. Gamer Zone

The Gamer Zone is a special room on the ship with Xboxes that are available for use. You just borrow a controller from guest services and you can spend as long as you like playing all kinds of games.

Marella Gamer Zone

Unlike on other ships where the games consoles are inside the kids club or teen club, on Marella cruises, families can all play together. This is great for families with younger kids too.

The Gamer Zone is particularly popular with teenagers, where it’s the go-to area to hang out after dinner. Because they can just turn up with a controller, they can play alone or with new friends on any machine.

Marella Cruises gamer zone

Because, like all of these activities, the Gamer Zone is free of charge, it will save you a fortune compared to ships that have a pay-to-play arcade!

8. Cinema

Each Marella cruise ship has a cinema onboard. On some ships this is inside and on others it’s outside. There’s a variety of movies each day, many of which are suitable for families and you should have no problem getting a seat.

Marella cinema

9. Sports Court

If you cruise on Marella Explorer, your kids can enjoy the sports court which is suitable for football and basketball.

football pitch on Marella cruise ship

On our most recent cruise, the sports court was constantly busy with children playing football. My son played football for five hours one day because he enjoyed the fun atmosphere with his new friends so much!

There’s also a table tennis table that you can use – just borrow the bats and balls from guest services.

10. Children’s Menus

Marella Cruises does a fantastic job of catering for children when it comes to mealtimes. In each restaurant there’s a kids menu with a variety of options to choose from, including plenty for vegetarians. If children would like a smaller portion of anything on the adult’s menu, that can be arranged too.

Marella Cruises kids menu

The buffet is also excellent with so many choices. Picky eaters will love the ‘Kids’ Corner’ which always has favourites like burgers, chips and pasta.

At the snack shack, kids can enjoy quick service options like hot dogs, fries, sandwiches and fruit pots.

Most ships also have an included Italian restaurant which is perfect for pizza and pasta lovers.

11. All-Inclusive Drinks

Who says that all-inclusive drinks are just for adults? On a Marella cruise, everyone gets drinks included, kids too. This means that parents don’t have to consider the cost when thirsty kids are constantly wanting refreshments.

Adam drinking a drink from a red plastic cup on a Marella cruise

There are so many drinks to choose from with fruit juices, fizzy drinks and mocktails. It was on a Marella cruise that my daughter developed her obsession with Shirley Temple mocktails!

Kids drinks are always served in red plastic cups so there’s no chance that they could pick up an adults drink by mistake thinking that it’s theirs. I love this idea and wish that more cruise lines would consider doing it.

12. Reasonable Wifi Costs

Cruise ship wifi can sometimes be ridiculously expensive. But on Marella Cruises, the wifi packages are a fraction of the price, which is very helpful for parents traveling with teenagers who might want to stay connected.

With affordable internet access, teens can message their friends, stream content, or check social media without racking up huge costs. This means fewer complaints about boredom and more time for parents to relax, knowing their kids are happy.

13. Accommodation Options

Family accommodation options with Marella offer comfortable, spacious cabins so that you aren’t always getting under each other’s feet, particularly in those mornings when everyone wants to get ready.

Marella Explorer cabin

Several cabin types have space for three or four people, with either a double or twin bed configuration and then a sofa bed or fold-down bed.

But bigger families needn’t worry – there are Family Cabins that can accommodate up to five guests, including a regular double bed separated by a partition, a double sofa bed and a fold down bed as well.

Marella Cruises Family Cabin

You can even opt for a Family Balcony Cabin with Suite Service if you want to splash out a little and treat yourselves. Not only do you get a spacious cabin with balcony, but you get all the perks of the Suite Service, including extra amenities in the room and a free continental breakfast in bed to enjoy on one day of your cruise (or more if you cruise for over a week).

14. Destinations & Excursions

Your cruise isn’t just about the time you’ll spend on the ship, but also the destinations you’ll visit – and many are absolutely perfect for families.

If your kids love the beach, then a Caribbean getaway could be ideal. You’ll have ample time to have fun on the sand, not just relaxing and building sandcastles with your youngest, but taking part in different sports or activities too. There are even some islands that offer white-water rafting for those thrill-seeking kids!

Or, if you are travelling with an adventurous group, why not head to the Mediterranean for a cruise packed with exciting destinations, including the chance to visit the incredible Portaventura Theme Parks from Tarragona.

In fact, in every destination Marella cruises to – be it the Canary Islands, Caribbean, Asia or Mediterranean – there are always plenty of excursion options to suit everyone in the family and provide memories to last a lifetime.

15. A Hassle-Free Holiday

The whole Marella cruise experience is perfectly suited to families – because less stress for mum and dad means happier kids too, right?

For a start, your flights are always packaged in with the cruise, with departures from airports all over the UK – no need to drive for hours upon hours just to start your journey.

Boarding the plane to Tenerife

And because the flights are managed by TUI, who owns Marella, the trip is seamless. No need to stress about whether the flights will land on time because, even in the very rare instances they don’t, the ship will wait for you. You won’t get that with other cruise lines.

Drinks and tips are already included too, including plenty of soft drink options for your kids.

And of course, Marella’s crew offer amazing service to every guest and will have each member of your family feeling truly spoiled. That’s perfect when you’ve had an adventure-filled day and you just want to spend the next morning having a lazy family start.

The Bottom Line

In my opinion, Marella Cruises are excellent for families with children of all ages. Some families feel that they need to cruise on the big American megaships with children, but really, I don’t think that’s the case.

Sometimes it’s just as fun to spend time as a family playing Uno or Cluedo as it is to go ice skating or go-karting!

kids playing cluedo board game on Marella cruise

Marella Cruises’ mid-size ships have plenty of activities to keep kids entertained for a week, and their smaller size means that it’s easier to get around without getting lost.

The facilities do vary between the different ships. I have a guide to Marella ships that has a table showing exactly what each one has to do on board, so be sure to take a look at that before you book.

Whether you have babies, teenagers, or any age in between, Marella is definitely an option to consider for your next family holiday.

Uncovering the Tech Behind Smooth Sailing

When it comes to cruise ships, one may wonder how these luxurious behemoths are able to navigate through the water with precision.

Rudders are essential components for steering a ship. Understanding the role of rudders in cruise ship navigation can provide valuable insight into the complex operations of these maritime marvels.

Odyssey of the Seas

This is all a little technical though, so I asked my friend John, who is a ship pilot, to help me to understand and explain how cruise ships steer.

Rudders or Azipods: Knowing the Difference

Some cruise ships have rudders, but others instead have podded propulsion known as Azipods.

Traditionally, cruise ships relied on rudders and varying propeller speeds for turning. However, many modern cruise ships now have pod propulsion, which combines the propeller and steering into a single unit. The trade name for these is Azipod.

Azipods pictured in a cruise ship dock
Azipods

Rudders are still essential components of many modern vessels, including some cruise ships. They provide directional control and enable the ships to steer and navigate through water. Located at the stern of the ship, the rudder is used to turn the vessel or to maintain a course (by continual small adjustments)

There are several types of rudders in use today, each designed to cater to specific ship sizes and navigational needs. Some common types of rudders include:

  • Semi-balanced rudder: A compromise between the spade and full-balanced varieties with some portion of the rudder surface forward of the axle. These normally have 35 degrees of movement each side of mid ship.
  • High lift rudders: There are numerous designs, eg Becker, fishtail, and shilling to name a few. The advantage of fitting these is the increase in port slow-speed manoeuvrability. They can have 60 degrees of movement. The Becker-type rudders have a flap on the end which effectively gives 90 degrees

Different types of rudders are chosen based on factors such as ship size, manoeuvrability requirements, fuel economy and the speed at which the vessel is designed to operate

SS Great Britain
SS Great Britain

Cruise ships that don’t use pod propulsion generally have a twin-screw propeller design with a rudder mounted immediately behind the propeller (it can be slightly offset depending on propeller characteristics).

With two propellers and rudders, the result is an increase in port manoeuvrability. This is even better when coupled with bow thrusters. Sometimes, rudders can be operated independently at a slow speed to enhance manoeuvrability.

The Importance of Rudders on Cruise Ships

When it comes to cruise ships, adequate steering and directional control are crucial for providing a smooth, comfortable experience for passengers.

Rudders, or their modern alternatives (Azipods), enable cruise ships to make planned course changes, navigate tricky waterways, and avoid obstacles. The ability to execute fine control manoeuvres enhances safety and reduces the risk of collisions and other accidents.

Rudders or equivalent steering technologies are absolutely vital to ensure the smooth operation and safety of cruise ships.

As well as rudders, modern cruise ships employ advanced navigation systems to ensure the safety and efficiency of the vessels.

Azipod Propulsion

A significant advancement in ship navigation is the introduction of Azipod pod-type propulsion systems. Cruise ships that utilise Azipod propellers do not have conventional rudders.

Azipods are pod-like structures with electric motors, mounted under the hull of a ship. The entire motor rotates 360 degrees, enabling the vessel to generate propulsion and steer in any direction simultaneously. They generally operate in pull mode, with the propeller at the front of the pod.

This innovative technology provides increased fuel efficiency, precision in manoeuvring, and reduced noise and vibration.

Bow Thrusters

In addition to Azipod propulsion systems, bow thrusters also play an essential role in navigating large cruise ships.

Bow thrusters are mounted in tunnels near the bow. Some cruise ships that have a propeller and rudder arrangement have stern thrusters fitted in addition

Thrusters produce a side thrust that helps the ship maintain lateral control during docking or undocking manoeuvres. Using bow thrusters in combination with Azipod propulsion allows cruise ships to achieve outstanding manoeuvrability and precise positioning, overcoming the limitations of traditional rudders.

While rudders may still be found on some cruise ships, the adoption of Azipod systems and bow thrusters has significantly changed how these vessels navigate through water.

Conclusion

In summary, some cruise ships do have rudders for directional control, manoeuvring and steering. While many ships have rudders, in the cruise industry pod propulsion has been adopted, although not universally, thereby eliminating the need for a separate rudder in most cases.

Advancements in rudder technology have contributed to the design and operation of modern ships. As cruise ships continue to evolve, it is crucial to understand the role rudders play in maintaining safety and efficient navigation for passengers and crew alike.

Terrifying Ordeal As Cruise Excursion Boat Capsizes With 38 Passengers Onboard

A cruise excursion off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia turned into a terrifying ordeal for 38 passengers from AIDAbella on Thursday 20th March, 2025, when the small boat they were travelling in capsized en route to Isla Barú.

AIDAbella excursion boat capsizes

The passengers were on a routine island-hopping excursion during a 14-night voyage aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAbella when strong winds caused their vessel to overturn in the Caribbean Sea.

Video footage from the scene showed the overturned boat and frightened passengers struggling in the water, with several nearby boats rushing in to help.

The excursion was bound for the popular white-sand shores of Isla Barú, a popular destination known for its turquoise waters and relaxed atmosphere.

But as the afternoon progressed, weather conditions deteriorated. Temperatures soared to nearly 32°C / 90°F and wind speeds increased dramatically, peaking at nearly 20 miles per hour around 3 pm.

This ultimately caused the boat to capsize, sending all the passengers into the water.

All 38 individuals – 36 German nationals and 2 Colombians – were pulled from the water and transported back to the cruise ship before its scheduled 5 pm departure.

AIDA Cruises confirmed there were no injuries among the rescued guests.

Not the first capsizing this month…

This marks the second capsizing incident involving excursion vessels near Cartagena in March. On 2nd March, another boat, carrying 42 non-cruise tourists from Argentina, Chile, Germany, and other South American countries, capsized en route to Isla Palma.

That incident was attributed to the boat’s bow failing mid-journey, allowing water to flood the vessel.

In that case, the Colombian Coast Guard and nearby vessels rescued all passengers, many of whom were wearing life jackets.

Despite the harrowing incident, AIDAbella continued on its itinerary through the Caribbean.

After departing Cartagena, the 69,203-gross-ton ship made its way to Philipsburg, St. Maarten, on 24th March, and will continue to ports in St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados before concluding the voyage in Martinique on March 30.

The ship can accommodate 2,050 guests and is operated by German cruise line AIDA Cruises, part of the Carnival Corporation portfolio.

While boat capsizing incidents are rare in cruise excursions, the double occurrence in Colombia this month has raised safety concerns.

Colombian authorities require all boat operators to provide life jackets and comply with maritime safety regulations. However, travel advisories highlight uneven regulation and oversight for tourism providers in the country.

The Canadian government specifically warns against boarding overloaded or poorly maintained vessels and urges travellers to verify safety credentials.

Similarly, the US Department of State lists Colombia as a Level 3 advisory (“Reconsider Travel”), partly due to unreliable tourism regulation.

The UK’s advice on Colombia doesn’t mention safety standards for boats.

Though cruise lines thoroughly vet their excursion operators, incidents can still occur, particularly in regions where local oversight may vary.

Passengers are generally required to sign waivers before participating in excursions involving watercraft, wildlife encounters, or adventure sports.

While this incident ended safely, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of situational awareness when participating in shore excursions.

  • Always wear life jackets on water-based tours.
  • Research excursion providers in advance when booking outside the cruise line.
  • Follow weather updates and stay alert for signs of changing conditions.
  • Speak up if a vessel appears overloaded or unseaworthy.

Luckily for the guests of AIDAbella, a day that could have ended in tragedy instead became a reminder of how quickly things can change on even the most idyllic tropical escape.

Celestyal-Ships.jpg

Celestyal Cruises Ships Compared – The Best Ships For Greek Isles Cruises?

Without a doubt, one of the most unique cruise experiences I’ve ever had was when I sailed with Celestyal Cruises.

Smaller ships, unique ports, and a totally relaxed vibe. I loved it!

But what are their ships really like — and is smaller always better when it comes to cruising?

There are just two ships in the fleet

Celestyal Cruises currently has two ships. The ships have all been purchased from other cruise lines and refitted to meet the needs of the Celestyal passenger – none have been custom-built for the cruise line.

Here’s a quick look at the two ships that make up the entire fleet:

Ship Built Joined the Celestyal Cruises fleet Gross Tonnage Passenger Capacity Length Number of decks
Celestyal Journey 1994 2023 55,819 GT 1,260 719 feet 12
Celestyal Discovery 2003 2024 42,289 GT 1,266 665 feet 12

1. Celestyal Journey

Celestyal Journey

Joining the fleet in September 2023, Celestyal Journey offers an exciting range of experiences without losing that intimate, relaxing feel that Celestyal is known for.

History

Celestyal Journey is another ship with a long history. She began life as the MS Ryndam for Holland America Line, launching in 1994 and remaining with the cruise line for 21 years of excellent service.

She then joined the P&O Cruises Australia brand as Pacific Aria, before being sold to Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

Before she could debut as the Ida Pfeiffer for the cruise line, it went into administration, and so she instead was sold to Seajets, sailing as Aegean Goddess for three years before joining Celestyal Cruises.

Accommodation

Celestyal Journey offers a range of accommodation options, including Interior and Exterior rooms that sleep between 2 and 4 guests.

Accommodation

There are three categories of Suite on the ship – the Junior Suite, Grand Suite, and a Stargazer Suite which is the largest accommodation option in the fleet.

Dining

One of the biggest advantages to choosing Celestyal Journey is the wide choice of dining options on the ship. Main restaurant choices include the Thalassa Restaurant, the Grill Seekers surf and turf restaurant, and the Greek Deli snack bar. There’s also The Taverna buffet to enjoy.

Dining

Guests can also indulge at Pink Moon which offers South Asian cuisine, and Smoked Olive for more flavours of the Mediterranean. The Chef’s Table is the ultimate venue for special occasions. These restaurants do have an additional charge.

Bars & Lounges

Celestyal Journey hosts an increased number of bars and lounges compared to the older ships in the fleet that have since departed. The centrepiece is the Amphiteatro Show Lounge where live performances bring every night of the cruise to life.

Bars & Lounges

There are three symposiums on the ship too, if you want to enjoy fantastic musical performances, along with the returning favourite Horizons lounge and disco. Other venues include The Grill lounge (just outside the speciality restaurant), the Ocean bar, Helios bar and the Martini Piano bar.

Things to do

In terms of daytime activities, Celestyal Cruises sticks to what it knows with Celestyal Journey – guests can look forward to relaxing spa treatments (the spa is much bigger than on the older ships), outdoor sports, shopping and photography. The outdoor pool has a retractable roof too, so can be used in all weather.

Celestyal-Journey-Spa-scaled

There is a casino, and there’s also an expanded kid’s area with an arcade to help keep younger guests entertained.

Destinations

Celestyal Journey offers a range of itineraries, primarily from 7 nights and up. Some longer celebration cruises will be available around major holidays.

You’ll be able to enjoy Greek Island cruises, but also sailings to the Middle East, with the ship sailing from Doha and Dubai.

2. Celestyal Discovery

Celestyal Discovery

Celestyal Discovery is a more recent addition to the fleet, having joined in 2024. She’s also a newer ship than Celestyal Journey too, having been built in 2003.

History

The history of Celestyal Discovery is a little more straight forward than some other ships that have graced the fleet in the past.

She began life as the AIDAaura sailing for German cruise line AIDA Cruises, and she completed 20 years of service for that cruise line following her launch in 2003.

AIDA Cruises then announced that the ship was decommissioned, and Miray Cruises reportedly tried to buy the ship for their Life At Sea Cruises round-the-world sailing, with the ship due to be renamed Lara.

That fell through, and so in 2023 the ship was acquired by Celestyal ahead of a 2024 launch as Celestyal Discovery.

Accommodation

There are four different cabin options on Celestyal Discovery, starting with the Interior Cosmos Cabins and Exterior Cosmos Cabins with an ocean view.

Balcony Cosmos Cabins are a little larger with their private balcony space, while there are Grand Dream Suites if you want something more lavish, with a jet tub and access to VIP spaces onboard.

Celestyal Discovery Balcony Cosmos Cabin

If you’re travelling as a family, you’ll want to avoid the Balcony options as they sleep a maximum of 2 guests only. Interior and Suite options sleep up to 3, while the Exterior cabins sleep up to 4.

Dining

You’ve got some great dining options available on Celestyal Discovery – you certainly won’t get bored.

The main restaurant is Thalassa, a grill that serves a mix of chargrilled dishes and freshly caught seafood. There’s also The Taverna, which is the ship’s buffet – stocked with a wide range of cuisine options.

Taverna Celestyal Discovery

The Greek Deli is the ship’s main snack option, with the Greek-style bagels being a particular highlight. And there’s Grill Seekers, a surf-and-turf restaurant that you’ll also find on Celestyal Journey.

Bars & Lounges

There is a fantastic selection of bars and lounges on Celestyal Discovery, with a venue to suit every mood.

Feeling classy? Head to Grapevine for a wine recommendation, or sip on signature cocktails at the Martini Bar & Lounge.

Prefer something a little more casual and sweet? Fig & Honey offers juices and gelatos along with indulgent milkshakes and other treats.

Halara Cove Bar Celestyal Discovery

And if you want to party the night away, check out the AFTer Disco Bar & Lounge, or take in a performance at the Amphitheatro Show Lounge.

Things to do

In terms of activities, Celestyal Discovery offers the same experience as Celestyal Journey. Expect to be able to relax by the pool or burn off some calories playing outdoor sports or in the onboard gym. You can then soothe the aches of activity away with a relaxing treatment in the spa.

There’s a casino, along with duty-free shops and a photography studio to help you capture the memories of your cruise.

Destinations

Celestyal Discovery tends to focus more on shorter cruises – still visiting the Greek Islands around the Aegean Sea and the Middle East, but with cruises typically lasting 3 or 4 nights.

Final word

The ships in the Celestyal Cruises fleet are all fantastically maintained despite their age, and offer a wonderful cruise experience.

Both Celestyal Journey and Celestyal Discovery offer a range of well-appointed accommodations, some great dining venues, and plenty of bars and activities to keep you busy – as if the itineraries won’t be enough!

Journey has a couple more dining options, but you won’t feel like you’re missing out if you choose Discovery. Your choice between the ships will likely just come down to whether you prefer the longer sailings that Journey offers, or the short trips available on Discovery.
