P&O Iona Children’s Facilities: Key Info for Families

P&O Cruises ship Iona is the perfect ship for British families, with sailings from Southampton to a variety of European destinations and lots of onboard fun for kids of all ages.

Our family on a cruise on Iona

We loved our two-week cruise on Iona with our seven- and five-year-old kids and would definitely return. We’ve also since enjoyed a cruise on her sister ship, Arvia, and loved that one too.

If you’ve booked a cruise, or are considering booking a cruise on board Iona, read on for all the information about Iona’s kids’ clubs, family dining options and family-friendly destinations.

I also have detailed guides to Iona’s cabins, restaurants and the first-ever gin distillery at sea.

Iona’s Kids’ Club

Just like the other family-friendly cruise ships in the P&O Cruises fleet, Iona offers The Reef club with a programme of entertainment and activities that will appeal to all youngsters of all ages – from toddlers to teens.

There isn’t just one P&O kids club – instead, included in the cruise fare are kids’ clubs which are split into different age groups and offer a safe and fun environment in the care of qualified Reef rangers.

Please check the latest kids’ club with P&O Cruises before you book your cruise. This is particularly important if you have children in different age groups as you may find that they’re not able to attend sessions at the same time, which could throw a spanner in the works when it comes to enjoying your child-free relaxation time!

Splashers – Age 2-4

Splashers
Splashers (age 2-4)

Two-, three- and four-year-olds will love the bright and colourful Splashers club which features slides, toys, books and activities such as arts and crafts and dressing up.

Surfers – Age 5-8

Surfers
Surfers (5-8)

Five- to eight-year-olds can attend Surfers, the Iona kids club featuring a soft play area. Kids can play computer games, watch films and enjoy puppet shows. There are themed days such as Pirate Day and they’ll be able to take part in treasure hunts around the ship.

Scubas – Age 9-12

Scubas
Scubas (9-12)

The Scubas club for nine- to twelve-year-olds looks really cool. It’s relaxed and welcoming, with computer games, air hockey and pool tables. There’ are organised activities available, or kids can just chat and play games with their friends.

Scene – Age 13-17

Teenagers have their own space on Iona, a hang-out called Scene, which is located on deck 6, far away from the kids’ clubs. I really like this idea, as I know that many teens wouldn’t go anywhere near a ‘kids’ club’, but this is more of a chilled-out space where they can hang out with others, as well as testing their skills with the latest gaming technology.

Iona’s Family Facilities

As well as the Reef kids’ club, Iona hosts a myriad of other places where families can have fun together. So even if your child chooses not to attend the organised activities of the kids’ club, there’ll still be loads for them to do.

The Splash Zone

Iona's splash Zone
The Splash Zone

The Splash Zone is a really cool water-play area that is used by the kids’ club at some times, and at other times parents can bring their children. I know that my two absolutely loved this – they even wanted to go in on a cold day, although I wouldn’t recommend that!

The Nursery

Iona Nursery
The Nursery

The Nursery looks like a really great area for babies and toddlers. Sadly, at the time of writing the nursery hasn’t yet opened due to the restrictions. However, I do hope that it opens soon.

The Night Nursery

Iona also features the Night Nursery, which is one of the most-loved features of P&O Cruises’ family-friendly ships by parents of under-fives. But again, this hasn’t yet been able to open.

The idea behind the Night Nursery is that parents can leave their children between 6 pm and 2 am to sleep in a quiet area under the watchful eye of qualified staff. They are given a pager so that they can be alerted should their children wake.

We absolutely loved the Night Nursery on Britannia. Walking away from our sleeping children with a glass of wine in hand, heading out to the theatre or casino was such an invigorating feeling when you’re used to a babysitter being a rare and special treat! Best of all, the Night Nursery, like all the other children’s facilities, is completely free of charge.

Ocean Studios

Iona features a four-screen cinema complex. There are screenings throughout the day so families can always choose an age-appropriate film, complete with popcorn, ice cream and snacks. This is the perfect way to spend a rainy day at sea – because they do sometimes happen when sailing from the UK!

The Club House

The Club House is an indoor/outdoor space at the aft (that means rear, for cruise newbies) end of the Promenade Deck. Here, families can get together to play games and enjoy fun entertainment such as games shows.

Our favourite Club House activity was making models of Wallace and Gromit. Then the real Wallace and Gromit turned up to say hello!

Wallace and Gromit

Wallace and Gromit could regularly be seen around the ship, as could their friend Sean the Sheep. There were always lots of Wallace and Gromit-themed activities and meet-and-greets on the daily program and we loved watching the Sean the Sheep movie in the theatre.

Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs

Iona has four swimming pools (excluding the spa):

  • Beachcomber pool – An outdoor pool at the front of Deck 18
  • Panorama pool – An outdoor pool at the aft of Deck 18 with plenty of seating in the sun and shade
  • Skydome pool – Located mid-ship on Deck 16, this large indoor pool has a domed glass roof. This pool transforms into a stage in the evening.
  • Infinity pool – A glass-sided pool at the aft of Deck 16 which offers spectacular views.

Iona has 24 hot tubs:

  • 6 hot tubs surrounding the Beachcomber pool on Deck 18
  • 2 hot tubs in the sunbathing area on Deck 18 mid-ship
  • 2 hot tubs in The Retreat adults-only area on Deck 18
  • 4 hot tubs on the Sun Deck on Deck 17
  • 2 indoor hot tubs by the Skydome Pool on Deck 16
  • 6 infinity hot tubs on the Promenade Deck on Deck 8
  • 2 large hot tubs by the Sunset Bar at the aft of Deck 8
Iona swimming pool

We found the Iona pools to be a little cold, even the indoor pool. However, because there were so many hot tubs, we were always able to find a warm jacuzzi to relax in, whatever the weather.

Pop-up Performances

Iona has two standout spaces – the Grand Atrium and the SkyDome. In these exciting entertainment hubs, families can enjoy surprising spectacles such as aerial performers and circus acts.

Iona sky dome

Family-Friendly Dining Options

Iona offers a great deal of flexibility when it comes to food with over 30 restaurants and bars to choose from.

Most of the dining venues on the ship are great for all ages, but there are some that are particularly great for kids…

Taste 360

Located poolside in the SkyDome, Taste 360 offers pizza slices, french fries, hotdogs, burgers and other street food options that kids will love.

Eating pizza on Iona

The Boardwalk Diner

Part of The Quays dining piazza, this American-style soul food diner serves up chargrilled burgers, hot dogs, southern-fried chicken, fries and much more. There’s also a secret veggie burger (it’s not on the menu, you have to ask for it).

Boardwalk diner

Hook Line and Vinegar

I just love the name of this fish and chip restaurant. Wherever you are in the world, cruisers can enjoy traditional British fish, chips and mushy peas.

The Horizon Buffet Restaurant

This self-service buffet restaurant is open around the clock and offers food from around the globe, accompanied by panoramic ocean views.

Each day at around 5 pm there’s a special kids tea. The buffet is closed to everyone else while it serves up a selection of favourites that kids always love.

The buffet is also a great place to eat breakfast. Another secret for you – kids can have waffles on request. You won’t see them on the buffet, but if you ask a staff member in a yellow apron, they’ll get them for you.

The Main Dining Restaurants

There are four main restaurants on board Iona and all offer Freedom Dining – which means that you can arrive at a time to suit you. Freedom dining gives the option to meet new people each night, or enjoy a romantic evening for two should the mood take you, which I think is just perfect.

Children are welcomed in the main dining room, even on formal nights. There’s a great kids’ menu which you can see here.

P&O Cruises formal night in main dining room with kids

Snacks and Sweet Treats

In addition to all the restaurants mentioned, guests can also enjoy Italian-style gelato from the two Ripples ice-cream bars. I would highly recommend the ice cream afternoon tea. It costs £12, but it’s large enough to feed the whole family.

However, if you don’t want to pay for ice cream, you can also get it from the buffet during kids tea for free. You don’t need to eat a meal, you can just walk in and make yourself an ice cream at that time.

Family-Friendly Destinations

As well as ensuring that children are well catered for on board, P&O Cruises has also crafted a range of shore excursions that are perfectly planned to ensure that families have an amazing holiday when they leave the ship too.

Iona in Puerto Del Rosaria

Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands

Iona offers 14-night cruises to Spain and Portugal, as well as seven-night cruises to Germany, Holland and Belgium.

As well as winter sun, families sailing to Spain, Portugal and the Canaries will be able to enjoy child-friendly excursions such as:

  • Riding a cable car and toboggan in Madeira
  • Enjoy a tree-top high-ropes course in Cadiz
  • Making a splash in the Aqualand Maspalomas Water Park in Gran Canaria
  • Touring the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona
  • Learning how to make traditional Portuguese custard tarts in Lisbon

The Norwegian Fjords

Iona will sail from Southampton to the Norwegian Fjords each week between April and September. On cruises to the Fjords, families will be able to enjoy an exciting range of excursions such as:

  • Visiting the Atlantic Sea-Park aquarium in Alesund
  • Meeting the animals at the Øvre-Eide Farm in Bergen
  • Spending the day building sandcastles at Sola Beach in Stavanger
  • Riding in an open-top buggy to see the Briksdal Glacier in Olden
  • Kayaking past waterfalls in Geirangerfjord

Final Thoughts

We loved our two weeks on Iona and would definitely recommend this ship for families with children aged five to ten. One thing to consider if your kids are younger than this is that the kids’ clubs might not be fully operational – so check with P&O for the latest info on that.

If you have older kids and teenagers who like to be constrantly entertained, then P&O Cruises’ might not be the bets for them as you won’t find any water slides, rock climbing walls, bumper cars or anything like that.

If you’d prefer a ship with those kinds of facilities, I recommend that you instead check out what Royal Caribbean has to offer here: The Best Royal Caribbean Ships for Kids.

23 Of The Best Mythical Ocean Names To Inspire You

When it comes to choosing a name for your baby or pet, many people take inspiration from the names found in ancient myths and legends.

Ocean names are becoming increasingly popular for both boys and girls. In this guide, I’ve combined two key trends – mythical names and names inspired by water to give you this list of mythical ocean names.

Inspired by mermaids, ocean gods and other mythical figures, here’s a list of the best mythical water names for you to choose from…

Aphrodite

Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess whose name derives from ‘aphros’, meaning sea-foam. According to the myth, when Aphrodite was born she rose out of the froth of the sea.

Poseidon

One of the most well-known Greek gods, Poseidon was known as the God of water and the seas. Perhaps not the best choice for a boy baby name, Poseidon was known for being violent and ill-tempered.

Amphitrite

The wife of Poseidon and queen of the sea, Amphitrite is used as a symbolic representation of the sea.

Benthesikyme

Meaning wave of the deep, Benthesikyme was the daughter of Poseidon and Amphitrite. She resided in Ethiopia.

Triton

The son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, Triton is a Greek god of the sea who is usually represented as a merman with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish. Triton is also the name of Ariel’s father in ‘The Little Mermaid’.

Oceanus

In Greek mythology, Oceanus is sometimes treated as a person but is more often considered to be a place. It’s the great world-encircling river which was believed to be the fount of all of Earth’s fresh water.

Doris

A cute ocean name for girls, Doris was a sea goddess and one of the 3,000 Oceanids n Greek mythology. Doris was considered the fertility of the ocean.

sea goddess

Thalassa

The Greek word ‘thalassa’ means ‘the sea’. It’s also the name of a sea goddess in Greek mythology.

Ceto

Ceto is a primordial goddess of the dangers of the ocean and the sea monsters.

Neptune

According to ancient Roman mythology, Neptune is considered the god of both freshwater and the sea. He is the counterpart of the Greek god, Poseidon.

Salacia

The wife of Neptune was Salacia. She was the goddess of saltwater and the female divinity of the sea who presided over the depths of the ocean.

Asia

As well as being the name of a continent, Asia is also a name from Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Oceanis and Tethys.

Calypso

A tropical sounding name, Calypso is also a girls’ name inspired by a nymph from the mythical islands of Ogygia.

Maya

The name Maya has been linked to several origins. In Greek mythology, Maya was the wife of Zeus and mother of Hermes. While Maya means ‘good mother’ in Greek, in Hebrew it means ‘water’.

Melusine

According to European folklore, Melusine is a female spirit of fresh water in a holy river or well. She is often depicted as a mermaid. While the name is quite uncommon in modern use, it’s one of the most well-known felame water spirit names of the genre.

Sabrina

According to Welsh legend, Sabrina was a mythical Welsh figure who lived in a river and swam alongside dolphins and salmon. It’s a popular name for girls.

Damona

In Gallo-Roman religion, Damona was a water goddess associated with healing and rivers.

Undine

According to ancient mythology, Undine (also spelled as Ondine) is a water nymph who becomes human when she falls in love with a man but is doomed to die if he is ever unfaithful to her.

Brigid

Another of the water goddess names and a variation of the name Bridget, Brigid was an Irish goddess associated with water where three streams join together.

Dylan

A unisex and traditionally Welsh name, Dylan Eil Ton is a sea god character in the Welsh mythic Mabinogion tales.

Aruna

According to Hittite mythology, Aruna is a sea god with a name that means ‘sea’. It would also make a lovely ocean-themed name for a girl.

Talay

A mythical ocean name for boys, Talay is the god and ruler of the ocean in Turkish, Mongolian and Altai mythology.

Sedna

In Inuit mythology, Sedna (also known as Sanna or Sidne) is the goddess of the sea and marine animals. She’s believed to be the Mother of the Sea or Mistress of the Sea.

So, do any of these sea names inspire you? Are you considering using one of the water god names or the female water spirit names as a future child’s name in your family?

One Cruise Line Now Has 33 New Cruise Ships on Order/Under Construction

Viking, one of the world’s leading ocean and river cruise lines, has placed an order for eight more cruise ships giving them a total of 33 new ships on order.

Viking Cruises ship

This order for more new ships came when the cruise line announced that Leah Talactac has been appointed Viking’s President.

Viking now has 24 new river ships on order or under construction. 16 of them will enter service by 2026 with eight more being added to the fleet in 2027 and 2028.

The cruise line also has nine more ocean ships on order that will enter service between now and 2030.

In 2030, Viking will have a total of 128 cruise ships in their fleet.

  • 107 river ships
  • 19 ocean ships
  • Two expedition ships

Viking River Cruises was founded by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and quickly grew to become the largest river cruise line in the world.

In 2015, they launched their first ocean ship, Viking Star. They now have 11 identical ocean ships in service and have been the fastest growing ocean cruise line over the past decade.

How can Viking grow so fast in such a short amount of time?

Viking has won more than 450 awards in their history and for two straight years, Condé Nast Traveler has named them the best ocean, river and expedition cruise line.

In 2024, Viking had the largest IPO on the NYSE. They trade under the ticker $VIK.

Princess Cruises Battling Suspected Norovirus Outbreaks On Several Ships

Just days after Coral Princess experienced a norovirus outbreak, another Princess Cruises ship, Sky Princess, has confirmed a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its 14-night Caribbean voyage.

Sky Princess cruise ship sailing

On 28th January 2025, the captain addressed guests via the ship’s public address system, informing them of the illness and urging passengers to practise diligent hand hygiene and self-isolate if experiencing symptoms.

Although not yet officially reported to the CDC, guests received written notification from Guest Services, confirming the outbreak and announcing an extensive deep clean that was scheduled for 29th January 2025, during the ship’s scheduled call in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The deep cleaning operation involved a thorough disinfection of all public areas and removal of all linens from affected staterooms.

A letter sent to all passengers encouraged them to disembark in Ocho Rios to allow cleaning teams to work efficiently.

“We recommend that you disembark the ship and enjoy time ashore during the cleaning operations. If you are unable to leave the ship, please vacate your stateroom when requested and enjoy one of the public areas onboard until staterooms are ready for occupancy again,”

Letter sent to guests

Princess Cruises also warned that some onboard facilities and services would likely be temporarily unavailable due to the additional sanitation procedures.

Remaining itinerary and next steps

Sky Princess, which departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 19, 2025, continued its sixth port call in Ocho Rios on January 29 before sailing toward:

  • George Town, Grand Cayman
  • Cozumel, Mexico
  • Port Everglades, Florida

The ship will likely undergo another deep clean in Fort Lauderdale before its next scheduled departure on 2nd February for a 7-night Western Caribbean sailing.

Passengers booked on that cruise should be prepared for a possible delay in embarkation if extended sanitation measures are required.

While the exact cause of the illness has not been confirmed, norovirus is the most common cause of gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruise ships.

The CDC describes norovirus as highly contagious, spreading through contaminated food, water, and surfaces, with symptoms including:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Fever and body aches

Though most passengers recover within 1-3 days, they can continue to spread the virus for up to two weeks, making deep cleaning measures crucial.

Princess Cruises’ swift response aligns with CDC guidelines, which require heightened sanitation protocols when an outbreak affects 3% or more of passengers or crew members.

Sky Princess’ outbreak marks the seventh confirmed case of gastrointestinal illness aboard a cruise ship in January 2025, all of them homeported in the US. This is a significant increase from the average of two to three outbreaks in recent years.

Earlier this week, Coral Princess conducted a ship-wide deep clean while in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, after 59 passengers and 12 crew members fell ill. That case was reported to the CDC.

The Sky Princess case has yet to be reported, which could indicate that the outbreak was identified early and proactive sanitation measures are already being enforced.

With more ships reporting outbreaks this month than in previous years, cruise lines are likely to increase sanitation protocols and onboard safety measures to prevent further spread and reassure travellers.

New Icon-Class Ship Accidentally Revealed

In an unexpected slip, Royal Caribbean appears to have briefly revealed the name and details of its highly anticipated third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, on its website before quickly taking the information down.

Royal Caribbean Star of the Seas

This accidental leak has fuelled excitement among cruise enthusiasts, offering an early glimpse into the next game-changing addition to the fleet.

But there will be many who will be non-plussed by the news as well, due to the falling popularity of the first Icon-class ship, Icon of the Seas.

According to the leaked information, Legend of the Seas will make her debut in Europe on 9th August 2026, before transitioning to the Caribbean for winter sailings.

The early itineraries, which were visible for a short time, revealed two major sailing regions:

Western Mediterranean Cruises

Roundtrip sailings from Barcelona, Spain, and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy
Ports of call: Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Provence (Marseille), and Florence/Pisa (La Spezia)

8-Night Southern Caribbean & Perfect Day Cruises

Departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Visiting Willemstad (Curaçao), Oranjestad (Aruba), and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay

Before the leak, speculation suggested that Legend of the Seas might homeport in Galveston, Texas.

However, the leaked schedules indicate that the ship will initially be based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a major hub for Royal Caribbean’s Caribbean itineraries.

While Fort Lauderdale appears to be its first U.S. homeport, additional deployments could be announced in the future, including the potential for sailings from Texas.

Of course, there’s also the chance that this leak was actually just using trial information and that it’s not accurate – though it would be surprising to see so much effort put in behind the scenes to upload itinerary data that was completely wrong.

The deck plans briefly available online matched those of its sister ship, Star of the Seas, indicating that Legend of the Seas will follow the same highly successful layout as the first two Icon-class vessels.

This suggests cruisers can expect cutting-edge amenities, innovative entertainment, and thrilling attractions that define the class.

Typically when new ships are announced, the deck plans are released incomplete with gaps for some of the new features that would be announced closer to launch. That’s likely the case with these deck plans too.

While nothing is officially confirmed, leaked pricing for US guests suggests that Legend of the Seas cruises will start at approximately $1,787 to $1,942 per person, including taxes and fees. UK pricing looks to be around £1,500 to £1,600pp for the European cruises.

These rates position the ship as a premium offering, which isn’t a surprise considering the pricing structure for

The Icon-class series has already revolutionised modern cruising, with Icon of the Seas debuting in January 2024 and Star of the Seas set to launch in August 2025 – earlier than originally planned.

Legend of the Seas will follow, continuing Royal Caribbean’s push for record-breaking, eco-friendly, and technologically advanced ships.

Although Royal Caribbean has not yet officially announced Legend of the Seas, this accidental leak has ignited excitement among cruise fans, many of whom are now eagerly awaiting a formal unveiling.

It’s worth noting that Royal Caribbean looks to be revisiting a classic ship name with Legend of the Seas.

The cruise line previously owned a ship by that name as part of the Vision Class. It sailed for the cruise line from 1995 until 2017.

She is now operating as Marella Discovery 2 for Marella Cruises.

Cruise Passenger Faces $47K Bill for Flu Treatment, Maxes Out Two Credit Cards

While cruise travel insurance can keep you from a financial nightmare, the benefits don’t kick in immediately.

In a cautionary tale about medical expenses at sea, a Minnesota man was handed a $47,000 bill after being treated in the ship’s medical facility for flu-like symptoms, according to Fox9.

Norwegian Encore
Norwegian Encore. Photo credit: Cruise Fever

The sadly ironic part of this story is that Mike Cameron and his girlfriend, Tamra Masterman were on this cruise because they had won the trip to the Caribbean.

The free 7-day cruise sailed out of PortMiami on Norwegian Encore earlier this month.  But after a couple days on board, Cameron got sick and visited the ship’s medical center.

A few days later, he was feeling much better—that is, until he received the bill for $47,000.

Maxed Out Credit Cards and Travel Insurance

According to Fox, the two credit cards that were on file with the cruise line were maxed out by the charges, and the man still had a balanced owed of $21,000.

Fortunately, the couple did buy travel insurance through Norwegian Cruise Line.  Although, the coverage purchased will only cover medical expenses up to $20,000 and filing a claim takes time.

And then there’s the complexity of receiving the benefits of that travel insurance.

“The traveler’s insurance doesn’t want to pay it until we run it by our health insurance. The health insurance doesn’t want to pay it because it’s abroad,” Masterman told the news outlet.

The couple complained to the cruise line about the seemingly exorbitant cost to which Norwegian replied in a letter that their prices are “closely comparable to other cruise lines and is what we believe to be fair and reasonable…”

Mike and Tamra’s story serves as a reminder of the potential issues of medical emergencies while traveling and the importance to review travel insurance policies closely.

Their “free” cruise quickly became a huge financial headache.  Being sick while on vacation is hard enough, and facing a $47K bill on top of it just made matters worse.

Fox9 stated that they reached out to Norwegian and the cruise line is looking into the charges to see if the kind of bill the couple received was typical for treating the flu.

Woman Spends Months Planning Anniversary Cruise Only to Find Mother-in-Law Is On the Ship

A woman who spent three months planning the perfect wedding anniversary cruise said she felt like “a third wheel on the vacation” she had organized.

The 35-year-old cruiser shared her story on social media, writing that she was shocked to find her mother-in-law had booked the same exact cruise.

Princess cruise ship off coast with loungers on beach

The trip was supposed to be a special anniversary celebration, in addition to a celebration of her husband’s birthday.

She even had her parents fly to her house to watch the kids so she and her husband could take the trip to Florida and board their ship on the romantic getaway.

But the excitement of being on the cruise ship quickly faded when she found out that quality time would soon be quantity time.

“As soon as we got to our room to store our carry on bags my MIL calls,” the woman shared. “She excitedly explains that she and her husband are ON the ship.”

The combination of the sudden shift in plans and the fact that the woman wasn’t super close with her mother-in-law was not how she saw this cruise going.

“My mood instantly shifts, this is not someone who I have a good or close relationship with at all. Husband is active duty so vacations are not something that is regularly happening or are easy to plan,” she continued.

While admitting she “wasn’t thrilled” with this turn of events, she stated that her husband was “excited to see his mom.”  And so, she only brough up her dissatisfaction once during the 7-day sailing.

“Kept my mouth shut and was cordial for 7 full days as I was a third wheel on the vacation that I planned,” she said.

The post then stated that the woman’s father-in-law—who, yes, was also on the cruise—was sick most of the time.  This meant that the couple spent extra time hanging out with the wife’s mother-in-law to keep her company.

The social media post concluded with some admission of the built up frustration that her husband received at the end of the cruise.

“The day after we made it home I did have an attitude and let my husband know how truly upset I was and he went off on me stating that his mother did nothing wrong.  But he can see where I could be upset,” the frustrated woman said.

After the Reddit post (which has since been removed by Reddit) posed the question of whether or not she was at fault for her feelings on the situation, most commenters took her side.

One comment summarized the sentiment of the readers and stated, “Yikes. On an anniversary trip? Did she crash the honeymoon too? Because an anniversary trip sans kids is like one step below honeymoon trip in terms of ‘we want alone time’.”

Another said, “A grown woman should know better than to invite herself onto what is obviously meant to be a romantic trip. She knew it was too because she didn’t surprise you with that news before coming out or even at the airport, she waited until she was on board.”

The commenters put the blame solely on the mother-in-law with another Redditor saying, “His mother DID do something wrong. Any reasonable person would know that a couple who have left the kids at home for a vacation are not there to spend time with their parents.”

Either way, not only did the situation lead to some undoubtedly awkward moments on the ship, but it also probably caused some extra stress at home.  It sounds like this couple could use another cruise, this time just the two of them.

MSC Cruises’ new flagship, MSC World America.

Dirty Dancing in Concert will be part of the entertainment offerings on MSC World America. This beloved Lionsgate film will be brought to life with live singers, dancers and musicians.

Carnival Responds to “Middle Name Requirement” Rumors for Boarding

Another Facebook group rumor has been put to rest after Carnival’s Brand Ambassador took to the social media platform to clarify a document question.

Carnival Cruise Gangway

Are middle names required on documents before being allowed to sail?

The question rapidly became a rumor, generating so many questions that John Heald, the Brand Ambassador, had to address the issue.

A concerned cruiser wrote to Heald, saying the following:

“John, according to some people on Facebook groups, a new requirement is that your middle name is now required on the cruise documents… or else you cannot sail. And people confirmed the call center is saying this is true. Why have you not told anyone. Many say like me they have not received the e-mail!”

Carnival Responds: No New Policy

Carnival advises on their website that the name on the cruise booking should match the name on the government-issued ID as closely as possible.

Even though the original question insisted that the call center was confirming the rumor, there is no new policy that mandates middle names. Heald responded:

“Thank you, and as you are one of 11 people who have asked this in the last 24 hours, let me say there has been no recent correspondence from Carnival regarding this, and therefore no changes.”

Regarding the rumored policy, he added, “I really do not understand how, if this were correct, we would implement this, as some do not have a middle name.”

Name Matching Best Practices

While middle names are not mandatory for booking, you should make sure that your name on the booking documents matches your ID as closely as possible.

Carnival’s system sometimes has character limitations which can affect how names are entered, potentially leading to middle names or parts of names being omitted or altered.

But this has typically not caused issues at boarding, as long as the primary name details match

If you’ve recently changed your name or are about to get married, Carnival recommends booking your cruise under your current legal name (e.g., maiden name if you haven’t updated your ID yet).

If you have any doubts about how your name should be listed, it’s wise to contact Carnival directly or check their official documentation policies.

Social media communities and groups can be helpful for cruise tips and tricks, but they also can turn the spark of a rumor into a blaze.
