Cruise Ship Sex – Is It OK To Have Sex On A Cruise Ship Balcony?

I imagine that some people think that the idea of having sex on the deck of a cruise ship is a little too risky for them, but that a cruise ship balcony offers some kind of compromise. It’s sort of outside, but still in a private space, right?

woman on cruise ship balcony

Well, not really. You’re very close to other people, who may well be able to see into your balcony or hear what you’re up to.

But how likely is it, and is it worth that risk if you think sex on cruise ship balconies sounds a bit thrilling? Is it OK to try?

Can You Have Sex on a Cruise Ship Balcony?

It’s not OK to have sex on your cruise ship balcony. If you’re seen or heard then you may be found guilty of breaking decency laws, especially if there are children on the cruise. If you are caught, you risk punishment and may be kicked off the ship.

Here are five reasons why cruise ship balcony sex might not be the smartest idea, plus some tips on how to get away with it if you really insist on getting down on the balcony…

1. People Will See You

cruise ship balconies
Some cruise ship balconies are overlooked from above

Balconies are not always as private as you might think. Some cruise ships have balconies that are overlooked, either by other balconies or by the public deck above. Meanwhile, others might have dividers to the left and right that aren’t entirely opaque.

And strangely enough, having sex in a place where you can be seen is still frowned upon when you’re cruising, unless you are on a very specific type of cruise. If you’re seen having sex, even on ‘your’ balcony, then you could get into serious trouble.

2. There Are Cameras

cruise ship security camera

Cruise ships are equipped with cameras that monitor the outside areas, because if they didn’t and someone went missing, then they would have no way to check whether that person had fallen overboard.

So yes, your balcony may well have a security camera pointed at it. And if you decide to have a little bit of hanky-panky on your ‘private’ balcony then it may be picked up. If it is, don’t expect the security staff to leave you to it – they could get in trouble if they didn’t act.

It’s probably more likely that you would get a warning though, if you weren’t visible to the other guests. But this would still be quite embarrassing for most people (unless you’re exceptionally confident).

3. People Will Hear You

Even if you’re completely secluded with an overhang, and you’re doing your thing closer to your cabin door so that you aren’t in visual range of any cameras, most people tend to make some kind of noise when they’re having sex.

And funnily enough, if you’ve decided that the weather is warm enough to get your kit off then there’s a good chance your cabin neighbours are also on their balcony enjoying the warm weather.

It’s highly likely that they would prefer to hear the sounds of the waves lapping against the side of the ship instead of any groans or moans you might be making with your partner.

If you’re having sex and someone else hears it, expect a stern warning from the crew. Even if you deny it and claim to have been having sex indoors but with the balcony doors accidentally left open, you can expect to be reminded to keep your private goings-on a little more private.

4. You Could Get Kicked Off the Ship

cruise ship security

While it’s easy to make jokes, this is a serious matter and if you’re caught having sex on your balcony then you could even be kicked off the ship. Public indecency is a crime and yes, laws do apply at sea.

If you break the law then the cruise ship is within its rights to ask you to leave the ship at the next port of call, no matter where that is, either to be dealt with by the police or just to make your own way home.

In 2019, a couple were removed from the Mein Schiff cruise ship because they were making love loudly with the balcony door open.

Plus, leaving aside all the light-hearted discussion, most cruise ships are family-friendly these days. It’s not just a worry about another adult seeing you, but there could easily be a child that catches a glimpse if you’re in view of other balconies or public decks.

So you really need to think twice about whether you want to risk having sex on your balcony, not just because of the legal ramifications, but the moral ones too.

5. You Could Fall Overboard

Depending on your chosen positions and how energetically you’re going at it, who’s to say you couldn’t fall overboard if you were leaning on your balcony in any way? Particularly if things get a little bit frenetic, you might get carried away and not realise just how much danger you’re in.

In 2007, a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman both fell overboard on a Princess Cruises ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Luckily, they were both retrieved, naked, from the water.

Is it really worth the risk, when there’s a perfectly good bed just a couple of metres away?

If You Really Want To Do It…

I can only make recommendations on why you shouldn’t have sex on a cruise ship balcony, but I’m not your boss.

You might be adamant that it’s going to happen, and if that’s the case, then at least consider one of these options for your safety (and to minimise the risk of getting caught).

1. Book a Cove Balcony

Cove Balcony
Cove balconies are much more private

You can find a Cove Balcony on Carnival’s Excel-class, Vista-class and Dream-class ships. They’re also on P&O Cruises’ Iona and Arvia, as well as some Disney and Cunard ships.

These balconies are more enclosed, having sides and a bottom-half railing made from a solid steel panel.

This means they’re much more private, so you won’t be anywhere near as visible. There’s no overhang to worry about, and you still get that ‘outdoors’ experience, even if the opening of the balcony is a little smaller.

You still need to be careful with noise, but at least you will have that extra seclusion.

2. Book a Balcony with a Hammock

Virgin Voyages hammock (1)
Sea Terrace rooms on Virgin Voyages ships all have hammocks

One way to maybe hide what you’re getting up to is to try having sex in a hammock. Virgin Voyages’ Sea Terrace rooms come with a hammock already installed, although it’s sheer so you might want to stay clothed and wear a floaty dress while you do it.

Many people take their own hammocks on cruises. You’ll need to check with the crew on the rules around hanging it, since some may not allow it (it’s quite the risk if you fell out near the balcony edge). But provided it’s hung on a larger balcony away from the railing you should be OK.

Of course, having sex in a hammock is probably a bit of adventure in itself, so have fun trying.

3. Book a Balcony With a Hot Tub

Balcony hot tub on MSC Seashore (1)
Private hot tub on MSC Seashore

There are a selection of cruise lines that offer balcony hot tubs in some of their suites.

These include Royal Caribbean’s Royal Suite, some of the suites on MSC Cruises ships, the Pinnacle Suite on Holland America Line’s Eurodam, and both the Haven Spa Suites on Norwegian Escape and the Owner’s Suites on Norwegian Sky for NCL.

At least in a hot tub, you’re partially covered and, if you’re leaving some swimwear on, you can probably be quite subtle about what you’re getting up to.

It’s still a risk, and certain movements are going to be pretty obvious, but these suites are pretty private so, in theory, you should get away with it. But don’t blame me if you don’t!

The Bottom Line

Look, I understand that cruise holidays are exotic and exciting, and you might be up for trying some fun cruise sex things with your partner (or maybe another cruise passenger you’ve just met – I’m not judging).

But cruise balcony sex is risky and could really upset other passengers if they see or hear you. Be respectful and keep it to your cabin, I say.

And while you’re here, take a look at this list of things you should never do on your balcony. You may be surprised to discover that topless sunbathing isn’t on there!

9 Easy Ways To Remember Port & Starboard

Port and starboard are the words used to describe the left and right of a boat or ship when you’re facing the front.

With many cruise ships being over 1,000 feet long, it’s easy to get lost on board, and remembering the names for port and starboard can help you to find your way around.

With these tips, you’ll never be stuck wondering what side is starboard, or is port left or right – you’ll have it perfected.

remembering port and starboard

Is Starboard Left or Right?

When looking forward towards the bow (front) of a ship, the port side will be on your left and the starboard side will be on your right. Port and starboard are fixed locations on any boat or ship, so if you turn around 180 degrees, the port side of the ship will now be on your right-hand side.

If you’re looking for an easy way to remember which side is starboard and which side is port on boat, there are several to choose from. Read them all and one of them should stick in your mind.

How To Remember Port And Starboard

1. Know Where the Names Port and Starboard Come From

If you know why port is called port and why starboard is called starboard, it will help you to remember which is which.

Before ships had rudders on their centrelines, they were steered using a steering oar. Because most people are right-handed, this was on the right-hand side of the ship. The combination of two Old English words ‘stéor’ (meaning steer) and ‘bord’ (meaning the side of a boat} became the starboard side of boat.

As the steering oar was on the right, boats would be moored on the other side. That’s why you have the port side of boat there – where the boat meets the port.

If you can remember that the starboard means ‘steering side’ and that most people are right-handed, this should help you to know that starboard is on the right.

2. Learn a Port and Starboard Joke

Another way to remember that port is left and starboard is right is to remember one of these funny port left, starboard right jokes…

The chat-up line

A cruise ship captain walks into a bar and sits down next to an attractive woman.

Captain: Do you like men in uniform?

Woman: I like policemen and firemen but sailors annoy me.

Captain: Why’s that?

Woman: They use nautical terminology too much and I find that irritating.

Captain: I guess you’re starboard about that. My wife said the same thing when she port me.

The captain’s envelope

Once upon a time, there was a famous and successful sea captain. For years he guided ships all over the world. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains.

However, there was one thing that was unusual about this captain – every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his captain’s quarters and open a small safe.

In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, then lock it back up. Afterwards, he would go about his daily duties.

For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long-lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope.

One day, the captain died at sea. After laying his body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, opened it and… The first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others.

Four words were on the paper…

Port Left, Starboard Right.

3. Think How Many Letters Are in Each Word

When remembering which is port and which is starboard, you only have to know one of them, as you will then know the other by default.

PORT and LEFT both have four letters in them

If you can remember that ‘port’ and ‘left’ are the same because they have the same number of letters, then by default you can work out that ‘starboard’ means ‘right’.

4. Count the Letter Rs

Here’s another handy tip for port vs starboard:

STARBOARD is RIGHT – it has two letter Rs in it.

If this trick helps you to remember that starboard is right, then you’ll know by default that port is left.

5. Think About Port Wine

Port and starboard have the colours red and green assigned to them. These colours are used for the ship’s navigational lights and may also be used in signage inside the ship.

If you also wish to know that port is red and starboard is green, you can use and that’s to use this mnemonic about port wine:

Is there any RED PORT LEFT in the bottle?

If you imagine a glass of port wine (which is red in colour) being poured until the bottle is empty, this should help the phrase to stick in your mind.

port wine

Another phrase that’s similar to this is:

PORT is always LEFT at sea, but never left at dinner

This means that dinner party guests always finish the bottle of port.

6. Get a Pair of Port and Starboard Socks

A fun way to teach your loved one about port and starboard is to buy them a pair of port and starboard socks. Then, they’ll always know which is which, provided that they work out whether the port or starboard sock goes on the left foot!

I also have a post about gifts for cruise lovers which has more quirky gift ideas for people who love to cruise.

7. Think About the Alphabet

Thinking about the position of each letter alphabetically can be the best way to remember port and starboard for some people.

L for LEFT, is close to P for PORT

R for RIGHT, is close to S for STARBOARD

8. Think About Your Wedding Ring

Sailors are often accused of having a girlfriend or wife in every port. Think about your wedding ring on your left hand and remember this to know which side is port.

9. Think About Your Watch

Is your watch on your left arm? If you remind yourself that your watch is port, or think that you can buy watches in ports of call, then you’ll remember that port means left.

Conclusion

Learning to remember which is port and which is starboard is easy once you have a trick to do it. As with learning anything, it will stick in your brain if you practice.

So pick out your favourite method and think about it on separate occasions so that you’re less likely to forget.

Don’t worry if you struggle to remember, you can certainly take a cruise without knowing which are the port and starboard sides. What’s trickier to know on a ship is which way is the front and which is the back, and that’s something that you’ll need to know several times each day!

Celebrity Cruises Captain’s Club: The Ultimate Guide

Many top cruise lines have a loyalty programme. After all, there are so many great cruise line options you could be choosing from, they want to make sure you keep coming back to sail with them!

Celebrity Cruises has one called the Captain’s Club. And while it mainly works the same as other cruise lines’ programmes, it has one unique feature that’s really interesting too.

Celebrity Cruises Captain’s Club

In this guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know about the Captain’s Club – what it is, how you enrol, and what you get for each tier.

What is Captain’s Club on Celebrity?

Captain’s Club with Celebrity Cruises is a loyalty programme which offers repeat guests various perks for their cruise. It has six tiers, with the benefits improving as you move up the ranks. Loyalty points (named Captain’s Club Points) are earned for cruising, with more points for higher stateroom classes.

If you’re someone who likes to browse for cruises based purely on destination and price, and you aren’t loyal to any one cruise line, then loyalty programmes usually don’t offer much appeal. But if you’re someone likely to stick with Celebrity Cruises for most of your sailings, you can enjoy some great benefits.

Note: Celebrity Cruises has a second loyalty program, called Blue Chip Club, that is just for casino players.

How To Find Your Captain’s Club Number

To find your Captain’s Club number, you need to create a Guest Account on the Celebrity Cruises website, and then click the ‘Enroll’ button to sign up to the Captain’s Club.

If you’ve already enrolled but just forgotten your Captain’s Club Number, it will tell you. You can then reset your password and log-in. Once enrolled, your number will appear on your main account page.

Captain's Club Number

You don’t need to have booked a cruise to enroll in the Captain’s Club – just sign up for an account and hit that enroll button, and you’ll be added to the Club. It’s that easy.

How To Earn Captain’s Club Points

Here’s how to earn Captain’s Club Points from your Celebrity cruises:

  1. Sign up to a Celebrity Cruises Guest Account on the Celebrity Cruises website
  2. Click ‘Enroll’ to sign up to the Captain’s Club
  3. Click the ‘Add a cruise’ button to add your existing cruises to your account, making sure any live bookings are added
  4. 14 days after your cruise ends, your Captain’s Club points will be automatically added to your account

How many points do you get per night?

The number of points that you earn for the Captain’s Club depends on the level of stateroom you book. You get points for every night of your cruise, but the higher the stateroom or suite you’ve chosen, the more points you get.

Here’s a breakdown of the different stateroom/suite categories, and how many points they earn you:

Stateroom Category Captain’s Club Points Per Night
Inside or Ocean View 2
Veranda 3
Concierge Class or AquaClass 5
Sky Suites 8
Celebrity, Signature, Royal, and Sunset Suites 12
Edge Villas, Penthouse Suites and Reflection Suites 18
Iconic Suites 24

You can really ramp up the points you earn if you book a higher class of stateroom – but this is Celebrity Cruises, and those top-end suites don’t come cheap, so it won’t be an option for everyone!

But as a guide, a 7-night cruise in a Signature Suite will earn you the same amount of points as six 7-night cruises in an Inside or Ocean View Stateroom. Those higher suite classes can really catapult you into the upper tiers of the Captain’s Club pretty quickly.

Celebrity Cruises Suite

Captain’s Club Power Up Points

A feature that’s unique to Celebrity’s Captain’s Club is the option to earn Power Up Points. With most cruise lines, the only way to earn loyalty programme points is to cruise, but Power Up Points offer an alternative, additional method.

When you’re enrolled in the Captain’s Club, you’ll occasionally be sent different activities by the Captain’s Club. These could range from filling in a survey to engaging with Celebrity’s social media content.

These activities will have Power Up Points assigned to them, and every month your Power Up Points are converted into Captain’s Club Points for you automatically.

10 Power Up Points are equivalent to 1 Captain’s Club Point. So you won’t fly up the tiers just by doing these activities – however, it’s a fun way to boost your point total from the comfort of your home, in between the cruises you take.

It’s great that Celebrity Cruises offers this option, because not everyone will be able to book lots of cruises, and you might just be able to (slightly) accelerate your push into the next tier, especially when you’re at Classic and you’re looking to move to Select.

Celebrity Captain’s Club Levels & Benefits

There are six tiers in total for Celebrity’s Captain’s Club. Here’s a summary:

Captain’s Club Tier Club Points No. of nights needed in an Inside Stateroom No. of nights needed in an Iconic Suite
Preview 0-1 N/A N/A
Classic 2-149 1 1
Select 150-299 75 7
Elite 300-749 150 13
Elite Plus 750-2999 375 32
Zenith 3000+ 1,500 (over 200 7-night cruises!) 125

Linked Accounts

It’s possible to link your Celebrity Cruises Guest Account with another person, if it’s your spouse or partner. If you do this, then you also link Captain’s Club accounts too. And the great thing is that, if one of you is a higher rank, you both get lifted to that higher tier for your cruises.

However, you still only earn your points individually, and if you ever unlink your accounts, you’ll revert back to your original tier if you were on a lower one. Useful to know!

Each tier comes with additional perks. Here’s a look at everything you get:

Preview

The Preview tier is exactly that – a preview of the real Captain’s Club. As soon as you’ve cruised one night with Celebrity, you’ll advance beyond this tier. But you do get some perks by signing up before your first cruise:

Captain’s Club Elite Cocktail Hour

One of the perks that’s worth explaining in more detail is the Captain’s Club Elite Cocktail Hour. Despite the name, this is actually a two-hour window where any guest who is Elite status or above can enjoy free drinks at most of the bars and lounges across the ship (the excluded venues are World Class Bar, Magic Carpet, theatre bars and restaurant bars).

Captain’s Club Elite Cocktail Hour

It’s essentially a two-hour free bar on every day of your cruise except for embarkation day. Between 5 pm and 7 pm, guests can enjoy a selection of spirits, beers, wines and cocktails, along with all sodas, juices and select bottled water.

It’s nothing to get excited about if you already have a drinks package, but if you don’t, then it’s a great perk you can enjoy on every cruise.

Captain’s Club Status Match

Celebrity Cruises is owned by the Royal Caribbean Group, and so guests who are part of the Captain’s Club can enjoy similar perks on any Royal Caribbean or Silversea cruise through the Crown & Anchor Society and Venetian Society, respectively.

It used to be more limited – Silversea wasn’t included, and you could only match to the Diamond tier on Royal Caribbean cruises, no higher. But it was updated in June 2024 and now it’s a significantly better program for those who want to try all three cruise lines.

Here are the equivalent levels of the programmes:

How To Buy Discounted Carnival Gift Cards (And Should You?)

One of the best hacks for saving money on a Carnival cruise vacation is to buy discounted Carnival gift cards. You can essentially get free money by adding money to your Carnival account at a discounted rate.

But where do you get discount Carnival gift cards, and how do those discounts work? Let’s take a look.

A hand is holding a 'Carnival Gift Card' against a wooden surface. The card features a stylized image of a cruise ship's bow with waves, a sun, and clouds in a blue sky, emphasizing the fun associated with a carnival cruise.

How to get a discount on Carnival gift cards

You can get discounted Carnival gift cards from select retailers and rewards programs. You pay a reduced rate for the gift card and can then apply that card to your Carnival account. You need to be a member of a selected scheme to be able to access the discounted gift cards.

Some of these schemes cost money, but the amount you pay will be less than the value you can save on the gift card, so it still makes sense to sign up.

The best discounts you can expect to get on a Carnival Cruise Line gift card are 10%, with some retailers and schemes offering less – typically 5% or 6%.

Gift cards are usually sold in either $50, $100 or $500 denominations, so you can pay $450 to get a $500 gift card.

The best place to buy Carnival gift cards with a discount is through AARP Rewards – provided you’re a member, you can get 10% off a Carnival gift card with a limit of 30 gift card purchases per month.

1. AARP and Carnival Gift Cards

AARP Rewards is a program that lets you enjoy thousands of discounts, including 10% off $100 and $500 Carnival gift cards. You do need to pay to be a member and access the discounted gift cards, but membership costs around $12 a year. As long as you’re buying more than one $100 gift card, you’ll save money.

A couple of people have reported issues when buying the gift cards, saying that they were waiting a long time to receive the e-gift card information and that AARP’s terms and conditions allow for long wait times:

The discounts are compelling but gift cards are being paid for and NOT delivered.

However, this very much seems to be the exception, and most people who’ve bought from AARP and discussed their experience on forums and social media report almost instant delivery of e-gift cards.

2. Verizon and Carnival Gift Cards

A person is using a laptop displaying the 'Verizon Smart Rewards' program on the screen, featuring a happy customer using a smartphone. The setting suggests a casual environment, perhaps a home or café, with a focus on the benefits of the rewards program.

Verizon is another option for receiving up to 10% off Carnival gift cards, but it relies on you being a Verizon customer and having rewards points to spend. If you are a Verizon customer then this is better than using AARP since you don’t have to pay any extra.

To access the cards, you need to log onto your Verizon Smart Rewards account on the Verizon website. Here you’ll be able to find $50 and $100 gift cards, which are physical gift cards – you’ll need to wait for them to be mailed to you once ordered.

It costs 1,000 points to get a 10% discount on a $100 card, and 500 points to get a 10% discount on a $50 card. Earning those points is easy as a Verizon customer – you’ll get 500 each month just for using paperless billing.

3. Target and Carnival Gift Cards

Target sells Carnival gift cards, and provided you’re a Target Red member, you get the same 5% discount as you would on anything else purchased with the card.

Target Red is a banking account with different options – you can choose a credit card, a debit card or a reloadable account. Whichever version you choose, you’ll get the 5% off Carnival gift cards.

While the discount isn’t as big as with AARP or Verizon, it may be an easier option for you if you want to buy your gift cards in-store.

Target stores around here have them, and if you have a Target Red card, you get 5% off the cards.

4. Kroger and Carnival Gift Cards

Kroger is another store that offers Carnival gift cards, and while they aren’t discounted, you can save more money.

With Kroger, your purchases earn you fuel points, which you can redeem on gas. But to make the most of the offer, you need to buy your Carnival gift cards during the promotions where 4x points are offered.

This earns you 4 fuel points for every $1 spent – so a $500 gift card earns you 2,000 points.

You can then use 1,000 points to get $1 off a gallon of gas, up to 35 gallons but in one transaction only. Realistically, most cars have a capacity of around 10-15 gallons, so you’re only going to save $15. So, for a $500 gift card, you can do this twice and get $30 off your gas.

It works out at around 6% using that math, but it may be easier to buy the cards elsewhere and just get a discount.

5. Allstate Rewards and Carnival Gift Cards – Defunct

If you’re looking on social media and forums for more advice on buying Carnival gift cards at discount, you might see Allstate Rewards recommended. Just a quick note to let you know that this program was retired in October 2023.

How to use Carnival Gift Cards

Two women reclining on a bed, looking at a laptop screen displaying 'HOW TO USE?' with an illustration of a hand holding a credit card. The cozy bedroom setting creates an intimate atmosphere for learning.

You can use Carnival gift cards either to book your cruise or to credit your onboard Sail & Sign account. You can also use them on ships, provided the ship is using USD as the currency onboard (so it excludes Australia sailings, for example).

You can use the gift card in the same way as you would any other gift card – just enter the details of the card on the Carnival website when purchasing your cruise, or when crediting your Sail & Sign account on the Carnival website. You can also hand over a physical gift card when on the ship to make purchases in the stores.

Just be aware that you can only use a maximum of nine Carnival gift cards at once.

Refunds of Carnival Gift Cards

If you apply a Carnival gift card to your Sail & Sign account and then don’t use all of the money by the end of your cruise, you’ll be refunded in the form of a new Carnival gift card. All Sail & Sign refunds are processed to the original payment method, so you won’t be issued cash or a bank credit – you’ll get a new gift card to use instead.

Final Word

So, should you use discount Carnival gift cards to save money on your cruise?

Generally, it’s a good idea, provided you’re planning on spending a large sum. It might be a lot of effort for minimum reward if you were only planning on saving $10 on a $100 card. But if you were buying at least one $500 gift card, the savings become significant.

There’s always a very small risk with gift cards that something could go wrong – e-gift cards may not arrive, physical gift cards could get lost in the mail, you could misplace the gift card – but that risk is small, and most people who use discount Carnival gift cards do so without issue.

As long as you’re careful, then you could get a decent saving on your next Carnival cruise.

Breaking Down The Financial Impact Of Major Sports Events

Undoubtedly, sports events act like a compass that attracts money, enthusiasm, and international focus. Where other people get excited in the bleachers, from the crack of the bat to the chattering of announcers, these events generate business and spin-off benefits beyond the sport. Every game, tournament, or championship with billions of dollars in play is not just entertainment but a cash cow on steroids.

Revenue Streams for Organizers

The revenue streams available to the organizers of major sports events are many and varied. Tickets alone get into millions, and this is where premium seats and VIP packages sell better. Broadcasting rights? They’re a goldmine. Companies like Melbet betting company also play a significant role, leveraging the excitement of these events to engage fans and drive additional interest. Global networks compete for the opportunity to broadcast games to millions, let alone billions, of fans across the world.

Sponsorship deals are additional revenue streams on top of all that. Companies queue up to have their names associated successfully for the privilege, paying millions. The merchandise you have there, such as jerseys and other items on sale, is quickly sold out during an event. Combined, these streams offset the event costs; they turn events into cash cows, where the organizers profit.

Economic Boost for Host Cities

Organizing a significant sports event creates a beehive of economic activity for a city. People with cameras come to visit places, sleep in hotels, eat in restaurants, shop, and, among other things, pump life into local economies.

Here’s what fuels the economic boom:

  • Tourism influx: Many supporters come to see it with their own eyes.
  • Infrastructure upgrades: Permanent structures built for significant events have become the city’s property for many years.
  • Local business growth: Restaurants, souvenir shops, and transport providers exist.

These benefits make events attractive, lively, and vigorous and have long-lasting positive effects on the development of the host city.

The Role of Sponsorships and Advertising

Breaking Down the Financial Impact of Major Sports Events | 27Breaking Down the Financial Impact of Major Sports Events | 27

Sponsorship and advertising are the primary sources of revenue for significant sports events. This show perfectly exemplifies these partnerships everywhere, from sideline billboards to merchandise. They are not just positioning statements; they are about making people remember and linking brands with the passion that comes with a game. Combined, these two create a modern experience for both the fans and the business side of sports. Platforms like https://www.instagram.com/melbet.srilanka actively leverage these opportunities, connecting fans with the thrill of the game.

Sponsorships as Key Revenue Drivers

When brands sponsor sports events, such as athletic outfits or tournaments, they are not merely paying for logos on apparel. They are paying for history. Consider the FIFA World Cup — millions are invested in establishing the connection between Coca-Cola and the memories fans cherish. Sponsorships also mean having control over the event or product in question. The same brand may control an entire category. This is evident in sports shoes, where Nike controls nearly all markets.

The scale is staggering. The market for global sports sponsorships will exceed $60 billion in 2023. Indeed, brands fight hard in this market because they understand it is profitable. People are fans, and their passion for a sport and its activities will precipitate increased sales. Whether it’s beer commercials aired during half-time or a logo on the winners’ stand, sponsorships are all about winning hearts and minds—and wallets, too.

Advertising’s Global Reach

Advertising during major sports events is not only extensive, it’s enormous. Just the Super Bowl costs $7 million for a 30-second commercial. Why? Millions are glued to their screens, which makes it a marketer’s delight. Cultural moments, not ads: this is what we are talking about. Consider popular Nike advertising during the Olympics.

These are not mere advertisements but recount a few life details. They capture the game, the drama, the nation’s pride, and the athletes. This connection leads the viewers to purchase a particular product or place a bet. In the case of brands, the return on investment cannot be comparable, so sports advertising must be part of the brands’ strategies.

Employment Opportunities During Events

Major sports events are similar to job machines that call for a workforce in hundreds of industries. These events involve the construction of super facilities for games, right down to favorable conditions in the means of transport, and each process requires the employment of people. Hotel rooms get occupied, restaurant spaces get busy, and tour guides get busy. Short-term contracts are through the roof—thousands of people can work and be a part of something big.

However, not only local workers take advantage of these opportunities. Event organizers hire specialized professionals, such as event planners, marketing department personnel, and technical personnel. These roles are critical in ensuring the event is organized according to international standards. For many people, it’s not just a way to earn money but also a chance to gain experience and interact with international organizations.

The Broader Picture of Financial Influence

Sports events are not games but economic revolutions. We know the FIFA World Cup can bring in more than $5 billion in revenue, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics brought around $15 billion to Japan’s economy. Thus, the impact goes beyond the scoreboard and has implications for infrastructure, job creation, and long-term economic development.

Crucial Features Your Cruise Sunglasses Should Have

Ocean cruises remain one of the most popular forms of travel worldwide. In 2023 alone, passenger numbers exceeded 31 million, dwarfing reports from previous years. This upward trend is expected to continue, with experts estimating that annual cruise participants will hit nearly 40 million by 2027. Among the biggest reasons why cruises continue to be so successful is because of the many tropical destinations they typically visit. To date, some of the biggest cruises have ports of call at sunny places like the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

With these destinations in mind, most cruise passengers know the importance of packing sunglasses. As we mentioned in a previous post about what to pack for your next cruise, this eyewear can help you navigate the brightness and climates that most passengers are exposed to. That said, given the special circumstances of a cruise, your average costume sunglasses is not enough. More than just as an accessory, your cruise sunnies should offer proper protection and comfort throughout the entire journey. So, if you’re unsure what to look for in your cruise sunglasses, here are a few features to keep in mind:

Protective lenses

By virtue of being directly out on the open waters, ocean cruises are stunning but often at the mercy of the elements. As such, most passengers have to contend with the harsh sun, strong winds, saltwater, and debris. These can prove risky for the eyes since they can cause a myriad of issues, ranging from ocular sunburns to corneal irritations. This is where the right lenses come in. Rather than just opting for dark-tinted ones, it’s better to use lenses that are proven to block out 100% of UV rays and are crafted so as to safeguard the eyes from debris. Should you require refractive vision correction, you can get the same protective lenses in prescription sunglasses. Available from trusted brands, such as Ray-Ban on reputable sites such as LensCrafters, they can be useful for those who usually wear glasses like single-vision, progressive, and cylindrical, to name a few. On a cruise, having these kinds of lenses helps improve ocular clarity and comfort so passengers can better enjoy themselves.

Durable frames

Another thing that sets cruises apart is the sheer number of activities that passengers can indulge in both onboard and off. For starters, most cruise ships now have at least several entertainment areas, sports facilities, and gaming centers. Then, depending on the itinerary, cruise packages typically include exciting on-land experiences, like tours. While these are inarguably fun, they do bring about an above-average amount of wear and tear. If you happen to be using cheap sunglasses, these can easily incur damage. Alternatively, you’ll want to invest in shades with durable frames that are lightweight yet capable of withstanding extra pressure. For instance, the sporting brand Costa uses scratch- and shatter-resistant materials. This means that even if you were to drop them or if debris were to hit them, they’re less likely to break and hurt you. Although these types of frames may be a bit pricier, they pay off in the long run since they can last you multiple cruises.

High coverage silhouettes

Finally, you’ll also want to consider the silhouette of your shades. As we mentioned earlier, the level of exposure that an ocean cruise comes with can be more intense than what most passengers experience regularly. Consequently, your average sunglasses shape may not be able to provide the appropriate amount of protection. With this in mind, a good example of these is the wraparound sunglasses from Oakley. As a performance brand, their models are designed to benefit individuals who are under extended periods of sun exposure and physical exertion. Since they offer maximum coverage, there is less chance of radiation, glare, or debris entering the eyes, leading to more comfortable vision on deck or on land.

First Cruise Tips – Cruise Addicts

Planning your first cruise can be an exciting yet daunting experience. From selecting the right ship to packing wisely, there are numerous factors to consider to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some key tips and tricks to help make your first cruise memorable and stress-free.

Choose the Right Cruise for You

Not every cruise is the same, so it’s essential to choose one that aligns with your interests and preferences. Think about aspects like destination, ship size, onboard activities, and your budget. Take the time to research various cruise lines and read reviews to find the best match for your needs.

Plan Your Pre-Cruise Stay

First Cruise Tips | 26First Cruise Tips | 26
First Cruise Tips 5

Arriving in the port city a day or two before your cruise can help you avoid last-minute stress and potential travel delays. For instance, if your cruise departs from Los Angeles, consider book los angeles hotels ahead of time to ensure a comfortable place to stay. This also allows you to explore the city and kick off your vacation in a relaxed manner.

Pack Smart

Packing for a cruise requires some thoughtful planning. Be sure to include:

Casual clothes for daytime activities

Formal wear if your cruise has dress codes for evening dining

Swimwear, sunscreen, and flip-flops for poolside lounging

A power strip or multi-port charger for your devices

Seasickness remedies, just in case Don’t forget to check your cruise line’s luggage restrictions and prohibited items list.

Take Advantage of Onboard Activities

Cruises provide a variety of activities, from live performances and fitness classes to cooking demonstrations and spa treatments. Review the daily schedule provided by the ship and plan your day to take full advantage of these offerings. Also, be sure to explore the ship itself—many vessels boast unique features.

Book Shore Excursions Wisely

While there are plenty of activities to enjoy onboard, shore excursions provide a unique opportunity to discover new destinations. You can book excursions through the cruise line for added peace of mind, or choose independent tour operators for potentially lower prices and smaller groups. Regardless of your choice, it’s wise to plan ahead to secure your spot, as popular excursions can fill up fast.

Budget for Extra Costs

Although cruises are often marketed as all-inclusive, there are additional expenses to keep in mind, such as gratuities, specialty dining, alcoholic drinks, and internet access. It’s a good idea to set a budget for these extras to avoid any surprises when you get your final bill.

Bring Your Own Drinks on Board

Many cruise lines permit passengers to bring a limited number of beverages onboard, like wine or soda. Be sure to check your cruise line’s policy and take advantage of this to save on drink costs during your trip.

Bring Extra Toiletries

The shops on cruise ships typically have a limited selection and higher prices for essentials. To avoid running out during your trip, pack extra toiletries such as toothpaste, shampoo, and sunscreen.

Bring These Six Other Things, Too

In addition to your essentials, consider packing these often-overlooked items:

– Reusable water bottle

– Magnetic hooks for extra storage

– A small first aid kit

– Laundry detergent pods for hand-washing

– Travel-size binoculars for scenic views

– A lightweight backpack for excursions

Skip the Buffet on Your First Day on Board

On embarkation day, the buffet can be quite crowded as most passengers flock there first. Instead, consider exploring other dining options onboard, like specialty restaurants or main dining rooms, for a more relaxed meal.

7 Recent Carnival Cruise Line Bans You Might Have Missed

If you haven’t taken a cruise with Carnival for a while, you might need to get up to speed with some of the recent bans that have been announced.  This year has already seen several new rules put into effect.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Let’s look at 7 bans the cruise line has either announced or clarified in just the last few months.

Carnival Celebration Docked in PortMiami

Whenever it’s announced that a cruise line has banned a certain item or practice, it makes headlines right away.  Often, it’s just a clarification or more specific roll out of an existing rule.

But in the last several months, a more than usual number of “bans” have been announced by Carnival Cruise Line.

1. Bluetooth Speakers

I think any avid cruiser saw this one coming.  With Bluetooth speakers only getting bigger and louder in recent years, it didn’t take long for these portable devices to become a problem.

Not only was the music competing with the ship’s own music.  Carnival also stated that it was a safety issue as passengers need to hear any emergency information over the ship’s PA system.

On top of this, it was a general annoyance to passengers in public areas or even balconies where the music would naturally spill over into other cabins.

The goal here was the keep the adult-only Serenity area, actually serene.

The Bluetooth speaker ban was announced in November of 2024.

2. Friendly Gambling Outside the Casino

To be clear, Carnival has never allowed gambling outside of the casino.  So, this one was more of a clarification.

One of the games pointed out by the cruise line was Left-Center-Right or LCR.   The dice game was growing in popularity on cruise ships and winners of the game won a cash pot.

In January of 2025, John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, was asked about the game and he took to Facebook to make the cruise line’s position clear.

“You can play for no money, but I’m afraid that because of very important rules and regulations, we do not allow guests to gamble outside of the casino,” Heald stated.

The game, and others like it, can still be played.  But no exchange of money can be made.

3. Upside-Down Pineapple Door Decorations

Carnival Cruise Line announced the ban on upside-down pineapple door decorations in late November 2024. This decision was highlighted by Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, in response to a question on Facebook regarding meetups for singles.

He confirmed that upside-down pineapples, often used as a symbol by the swinging community, would no longer be allowed on stateroom doors and would be removed if noticed by the crew.

Heald stated that the decorations are “definitely no longer allowed on the ships”.

The move was made likely in response to a growing awareness of the symbol and the cruise line’s focus on a family-friendly atmosphere.

4. Satellite Dishes, Routers

In September 2024, a YouTuber found himself in hot water with Carnival when his Starlink Mini satellite dish was confiscated, and he was asked to speak with the ship’s hotel director.

Despite the device being technically allowed on board, the cruise line argued that it was a “satellite disk” rather than a “satellite dish,” a claim the YouTuber disputed when referring to the wording of the policy.

Carnival’s Prohibited Item list includes the following:

  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), communication scanners, wideband receivers, satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers.
  • Satellite dish, routers and other internet related equipment

But with Starlink now being integrated and available on T-Mobile cell phones, this will be a more difficult situation for cruise line’s to navigate.

5. Asking for Drinking Money

Just this month, Carnival began to crack down on a “buy me a drink” practice that started as a joke.

The growing trend of putting signs on cabin doors with a request for drinking money has also fallen under the cruise line’s ban hammer.

A person asked the Brand Ambassador about the practice:

“John Heald, what are your thoughts about cruisers who post a sign on their cabin door or hand out flyers with a Venmo asking for people to send money for drinks? Does Carnival have a rule about that?”

But Heald was straight to the point in saying that this practice was simple not permitted on Carnival cruise ships.

“Absolutely, we do. It is strictly forbidden,” he wrote. “If you have details of anybody doing this, would you please let me know those details now, and I will take care of it immediately. The solicitation of guests by guests is strictly forbidden. Thank you so much and I will be here to help so please send me the details,” Heald responded.

6. CBD Products

This one isn’t new exactly.  But it has fallen under the spotlight in the last few months.

Just last year a couple was banned from the cruise line after a container of CBD mints were found in a backpack.

Before they could even board Carnival Conquest, the husband’s boarding pass was taken away and the couple was banned from all future cruises with the company.

State laws might allow CBD, but cruise ships follow stricter federal and international rules, plus they must comply with laws at their destinations like the Bahamas or Caribbean.

This has led to some confusion for passengers who think, “If CBD gummies are legal in my state, why not on a cruise?” But don’t do it, or you’ll be in for a change in vacation plans.

7. Deck Chair Hogging

Reserving deck chairs and loungers for hours on end has always been against Carnival’s policy.  But it still happened.

Now Carnival is trying to solve this problem that has annoyed passengers for years.

If crew members notice that a lounger has been unoccupied for 40 minutes, a “40-Minute Rule” is put into place that allows them to remove that passenger’s items.

Crew will place notecards on chairs with the current time so they can keep track of how long a chair has been “hogged” and take the appropriate action.

Heald acknowledged the problem of deck chair hogging and stated the following about the new solution.

“If they are not back by that time, we will remove it.  It’s only fair to make it that way.  Ever since I’ve worked on cruise ships, there’ve been people desperate to get the chairs.  We are doing our very best.  It’s not a perfect system, it would be silly of me to suggest otherwise. But it is something we need to do,” Heald stated.

So far, passengers have overwhelmingly praised the cruise line’s efforts as it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Royal Caribbean has also implemented a similar system that involves placing a slip cover over “reserved” loungers.

Bottom Line

So, if you’re hopping on a Carnival cruise, make sure you’re up to speed with these new bans.  And keep in mind, these are put into place to make everyone on the ship can have a great vacation.

The last thing you want is anarchy and a rule-less society while hundreds of miles from land, right?  After all, you’re sharing your vacation with thousands of other people, and a little kindness and politeness can go a long way.

2. Cruise at Spring Break

Spring break is a popular time of year for singles to cruise as college-aged men and women step aboard for a short break with friends. Though many students opt to visit Florida for spring break, Carnival’s short cruises during the springtime sail from Los Angeles, as well as Miami and Orlando.

This time of the year also means there’s less likely to be families or older demographics on board when compared to the summer and fall seasons. Most cruises have all ages on board throughout the year, but the springtime departures draw in the younger crowds looking to party with friends. These are the ideal cruises for 18 to 30s.

3. Book a Short Cruise

Shorter sailings mean that those with college or full-time jobs can cruise without worrying about missing term or having to use annual leave/vacation time, especially sailings that fall over a weekend. Longer trips tend to attract retired people couples and families.

4. Go to a Singles Mixer

Even on standard sailings, Carnival arranges singles mixers and LGBT meet-ups. Attending these means you have the chance to get to know fellow solo travellers, even just as a friendly face and someone to speak to on the ship.

Once on board, check the daily program for details of where and when the solo travellers hang out. Be careful though, just because someone is cruising alone it doesn’t mean they’re single, so never make assumptions about the lifestyle of your fellow cruisers.

5. Meet People Online Before Your Cruise

Many cruisers set up groups on Facebook for specific sailings so that those who would like to meet other singles on board can arrange what to get up to (or down to) in advance.

If you’re into the lifestyle, look out for any pineapple emojis as a secret sign. More on that here: What Does Pineapple Mean On A Cruise?

There’s also an app called Cruise Ship Mingle that you can use to message people on your ship before you set sail. With a bit of pre-cruise chat you can work out who to look out for, as well as who to avoid!

6. Make the Most of Ship Activities

Life onboard a Carnival cruise also presents many other opportunities to strike up conversations with other singles. Dance parties and discos are frequent on board with deck parties, themed nights and the sail away events common on most sailings.

More low-key activities include getting to know people during casual interactions such as with the people you share a hot tub with or those on the next sun lounger along. Just ensure you aren’t disturbing their relaxation time too much!

Daily quizzes and trivia events bring the chance to join teams and enjoy a competitive spirit while getting to know someone, as well as other interactive events such as painting, bingo and mini-golf. Ice breakers such as these are a fantastic option to scope out people who you might like.

The most obvious place to meet other singles is during the evening at one of the many bars on your ship. Visit a bar in the late evening and you will find people who like to let loose and are looking for a good time.

7. Book a Shore Excursion

Shore excursions are another perfect place to meet other singles and Carnival offers a huge directory of options. Not only are you exploring the port you visit, but there’s already a shared interest between you to help ease into the conversation.

Be selective about the ones you choose though. Beach parties and bar-hopping experiences will fare much better in finding young singles than shopping trips and leisure time.

Helpful Tips for How to Get Laid on a Cruise

Be Careful

Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with and always wear protection if you have sex. If you’re cruising with a friend, always let them know where you’re going and whether you’ll be coming back to the cabin later. And please, don’t have sex on a cruise ship balcony!

Don’t Hit On the Crew

Cruise ship crew are under strict orders not to hook up with passengers and doing so could cost them their job. Plus, it’s rude to hit on people while they work!

Don’t Drink Too Much

Your Carnival drink package has a daily limit, but remember that’s a limit, not a target! If you get too drunk then not only will you be less attractive to any potential love interests, but the beer goggles could cause you to end up doing something (or someone!) that you regret.

Don’t Be Too Picky or Shy

With shorter cruises, there’s not much time to play hard to get or pick and choose. Be confident and speak to anyone who takes your fancy – the worst that could happen is that they say no.

Be Yourself

While it could be easy to pretend to be someone else, you want to relax and enjoy yourself with anyone you meet so be yourself and have fun!

Meeting people in the casino

The Bottom Line

Carnival is a great option for single cruisers and presents plenty of opportunities to get up close with other fellow single passengers. From specifically arranged single cruises to special events and activities ideal for getting to know others and spending one-on-one time with.

Spring break and short cruises are the best chances for meeting other singles around 20 to 40 years of age, while the longer-duration sailings and fall season are better suited for those seeking an older demographic.

If you’re planning your trip purely around getting some Carnival cruise sex, then following the tips in this guide should maximise your chances. Is it easy to get laid on a cruise? No, but Carnival’s single cruises events do give you an advantage.

And you could always book a swingers cruise if you wanted to really increase your odds…
