There’s something special about cruises that makes, unlike any other vacation, a unique experience in and of themselves. You have the opportunity to visit several destinations without worrying about airport mishaps, being on time for departures, checking in and out of accommodation, or the seemingly endless car rides. All meals are included, but you can also sample foods from local restaurants or restaurants during port days. While being out at sea can seem boring for some, there are so many ways to keep yourself entertained throughout the duration of your trip. Many cruises have shopping areas onboard, as well as nightclubs, spa treatment facilities, live music, movies, and theatre shows.
But what if you want your first cruise to be a little more special? If you’re planning your wedding and would like your nuptials to be a little more special than the standard ceremony, you may have considered getting married on a ship. It’s not a bad idea at all; in fact, it’s a great way to make the entire experience more romantic and unique. This is, after all, one of the most important days of your life, and it would be a pity not to give it your all and not do something that you really want to do. However, it’s essential to remember that a wedding like this will require a little more careful planning so that you can have all the logistics in order.
Do your research
Just because you can tie the knot on a cruise line doesn’t mean all of them accept it. This is why it’s crucial to do your research beforehand in order to determine which lines actually offer this service. Typically, the bigger ships are the ones that are more likely to host wedding ceremonies, and the lines in the luxury category don’t have any problem with weddings either. Make sure to check carefully, as there are some cruises that allow smaller events, such as vow renewals, but not actual weddings. If you want a small wedding, though, you may be able to choose this option as the staff can provide personalized amenities for a small number of passengers.
The seasons
When you’re considering the best season for your wedding, you’ll probably think of the weather first and foremost. Depending on the temperature, the bridesmaid dresses you choose will have to be of different materials to ensure comfort. The gowns you choose for an autumn ceremony, for example, will have to be long-sleeved, made from silk and wool blends so that they’re both cozy and festive, and follow a color palette that is in line with the season, such as mustard yellow, burnt orange, burgundy, or deep navy blue.
However, for cruise weddings, the season also matters because of the possible stark contrast when it comes to costs. Getting married on a ship during a holiday is likely to be more expensive, so you should avoid it if you want to stick to a budget. For instance, Valentine’s Day may sound like the perfect time to tie the knot, but it can also be twice as much to host the ceremony on that date. Learn about the possible surcharges during holidays before moving on with the planning.
The paperwork
It makes sense to question whether getting married on a cruise is even legal in the first place. The short answer to that is yes, but you should still get the paperwork in order ahead of the wedding day. Your officiant can be brought in to conduct the legal proceedings the same way it is for the standard, land-based weddings. But that only works if the ceremony takes place during the embarkation day. If you plan on getting hitched during the cruise, either a local notary or a nondenominational officiant will preside and ensure the wedding is legal.
If you want to be married by the captain, your choices will be more limited as there are only a few cruise lines that allow this. The reason is that there are legal limitations pertaining to the countries of registry to which the vessels belong. Some of the exceptions you should look into if this is what you want include cruise lines registered in Malta, Norway, and Bermuda. Some cruises will give you the option of a private island for a wedding, but keep in mind that the marriages may not always be legal.
The number of guests
Some cruise ships will only be able to accommodate very intimate events that do not exceed ten to fifteen guests, while others can host nuptials with at least forty guests. The maximum is about 150 guests, but most won’t be able to make such a large gathering possible simply because the venue itself restricts the number of guests allowed to participate. In many cases, non-sailing guests are allowed as well, but naturally, only if you have an embarkation-day wedding.
The number of people you can bring will depend, but the maximum can be around 80 to 100 people. Being non-sailing guests means that they will have to leave before the ship sets sail. Shoreside ceremonies will also welcome non-sailing participants, but only within capacity limits since the venues will likely be smaller. Check exactly how many people can join and if they can join at all so that the guests also have time to look for gifts, prepare their speeches, and have time to break into their new shoes. Those who are part of the wedding party, such as the mother of the bride, will also need time to find the perfect dress.
Wedding packages
Some wedding venues offer customized wedding packages that you can use. What is included in a package will vary depending on the cruise line, the package level you chose, and whether you want to get hitched in a port or at sea. Working with a wedding coordinator will remove a lot of the hassle and stress so that you can be more relaxed about the whole experience. You can even develop a wedding week that includes a series of events such as special dinners, beverage tasting, afternoon tea, fireworks, or live band music.
Planning a cruise wedding can seem like a handful, but if this has been a dream of yours for a long time, you should try your best to achieve it. Not only is it a unique way to celebrate your special day, but it is also considerably cheaper than the standard land wedding.

Botswana is often hailed as one of the world’s premier safari destinations, and for good reason. The country is home to the largest elephant population on the planet, with an estimated 130,000 elephants roaming its national parks and reserves. These gentle giants are a highlight for many visitors, offering unforgettable encounters in their natural environment.
The Okavango Delta, a sprawling oasis in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, plays a crucial role in Botswana’s ecosystem. During the annual flood season, the delta transforms into a lush paradise, attracting a multitude of wildlife. Large mammals such as buffalo, giraffes, and zebras migrate to the area, followed closely by predators like lions and leopards. This dynamic interplay of species creates a vibrant and ever-changing spectacle that draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe.
Botswana’s commitment to conservation is evident in its dedication of nearly 40% of its land to national parks and reserves. This focus on preserving natural habitats ensures that future generations can continue to experience the country’s unparalleled biodiversity. As a result, Botswana has become a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for those seeking an authentic safari adventure.
Safari options: From game drives to mokoro adventures
Botswana offers a variety of safari experiences, each providing a unique perspective on its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. Traditional game drives are a popular choice, allowing visitors to explore vast savannas and observe animals in their natural habitats. These guided tours offer insight into the behavior and ecology of the region’s iconic species.
For a different vantage point, boat safaris provide an opportunity to glide along the waterways of the Okavango Delta. From the comfort of a boat, travelers can witness the serene beauty of the delta’s channels, lagoons, and islands. This perspective offers a chance to see aquatic species like hippos and crocodiles, as well as a plethora of birdlife.
Perhaps the most unique safari experience in Botswana is the mokoro canoe excursion. Using traditional dugout canoes, local guides navigate the delta’s shallow waters, offering an intimate and serene way to explore this remarkable ecosystem. The mokoro safari allows visitors to get up close to wildlife and appreciate the tranquility of the delta’s hidden corners.
The best time for wildlife viewing in Botswana is during the dry season, from May to October, when animals congregate around water sources. This period offers optimal conditions for observing the country’s diverse fauna and experiencing the magic of a Botswana safari.
From sea to savanna
For travelers eager to combine a cruise with a Botswana safari, careful planning is key to ensuring a seamless transition between these two distinct experiences. Many cruise itineraries offer convenient access to southern Africa, with ports of call in South Africa or Namibia providing a gateway to Botswana’s wilderness.
Recommended itineraries often include a cruise along the southern African coast, followed by a flight to Botswana for the safari portion of the journey. This combination allows travelers to enjoy the best of both worlds—relaxing at sea and embarking on thrilling wildlife adventures.
To maximize the experience, travelers should consider factors such as the timing of their visit, the duration of their stay, and the logistics of transportation. Working with experienced travel operators who specialize in both cruises and safaris can help ensure a well-organized and memorable trip.
By seamlessly integrating a cruise with a Botswana safari, travelers can create a cohesive and unforgettable travel adventure that spans both sea and savanna.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Greece?
The cost of car renting in Greece varies widely depending on several factors, including the season, location, type of vehicle, and rental duration. On average, car rentals in Greece range from €20 ($22, £17) to €70 ($77, £60) per day for small cars during the mid-season (spring and autumn). During the high season (July and August), prices can increase significantly, with daily rates for small cars averaging €40 ($44, £34) to €100 ($100, £86). Low-season rentals (winter months) can drop to as low as €8 (8.80 $, £6.94) to €20 ($22, £17) per day, especially for economy vehicles.
Rental costs also vary between mainland Greece and the islands. On the mainland, such as in Athens or Thessaloniki, prices are generally more competitive due to a higher supply of vehicles and larger rental companies. For example, small cars can start at €20 ($ 22, £17.34) daily in these areas. Prices on popular islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete tend to be higher due to increased demand and limited availability. For instance, renting a car in Santorini during peak season may cost between €50 ($55, £43) and €120 ($132, £104) per day, depending on the vehicle type.
Vehicle type significantly impacts pricing as well. Economy cars are the most affordable option, while SUVs, luxury vehicles, convertibles, or 7-seaters can cost anywhere from €70 ($ 77, £60.69) to €200+ ($220, £173) per day, especially during high-demand periods. Longer rental durations often come with discounts. Weekly rentals average around €250 ($275, £216) to €500 ($550, £433) for economy cars during mid-season. Monthly rentals can offer even better value, with rates averaging €1,000 ($1,100.00, £866.88) to €2,000 ($2,200, £1,733), depending on the vehicle and company.
What should you know about renting a car in Greece?
Renting a car in Greece is an excellent way to explore the country at your own pace, allowing you to discover villages and fewer locations. From driving license requirements to understanding local road conditions and avoiding common scams. Here are ten essential tips for renting a car in Greece:
Driving License Requirements: If you’re an EU citizen, your national driving license is sufficient for renting a car in Greece. Non-EU citizens will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) and their home country’s license. Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old (sometimes 23), with a valid permit for at least one year. Some companies may impose additional fees or restrictions for drivers under 25 or over 70.
Gas Stations and Fuel Costs: Gas stations are widely available on the mainland but are easier to find in remote areas or smaller islands. Most stations are full-service, where an attendant pumps the gas for you. Fuel prices are slightly higher on the islands than on the mainland, averaging around €2 ($2.20, £1.73) per liter in high-demand areas.
Insurance Options: Basic insurance, such as third-party liability, is typically included with rentals, but it’s advisable to upgrade to additional coverage like Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Full Damage Waiver (FDW) for extra protection. Comprehensive plans often cover damages to tires, glass, and theft.
Road Conditions: Roads on the mainland are generally well-maintained, and highways often require toll payments (fees range from €4 ($4.40, £3.47) to €25 ($27.50, £21.68) per segment). Road quality can vary on the islands—main routes are paved, but secondary roads may be narrow, winding, or unpaved.
Common Scams to Avoid: Read terms and conditions carefully to avoid surprise charges for services like GPS or child seats. Inspect the car thoroughly and document any scratches or dents with photos before leaving to prevent false damage claims later.
Car Types and Transmission: Manual transmission is the default method for renting cars in Greece. Automatic vehicles are available but often at a higher cost, sometimes double the price of manual options. If you prefer an automatic, book well in advance—especially during the high season—to ensure availability.
Seasonality and Pricing: Car rental prices vary significantly by season and location. High Season (July-August) rates for small cars average between €40 ($44.00, £34.69) and €100 ($110.00, £86.73) per day. Mid-Season (Spring and Autumn) rates drop to €20 (22.00 $, £17.34) to €70 ($77.00, £60.69) per day. Low Season (Winter) economy cars can cost as little as €8 (8.80 $, £6.94) to €20 ($22.00, £17.34) per day.
Toll Roads: Many mainland highways require toll payments, typically paid in cash (credit cards are not always accepted). Fees range from €4 ($4.40, £3.47) to €25 ($27.50, £21.68) depending on the distance traveled. Be sure to carry enough cash for tolls, especially when driving long distances.
Parking: Parking in major cities like Athens or Thessaloniki can be challenging due to limited spaces and strict regulations. Use designated parking lots or garages to avoid fines or theft risk. Parking is generally easier but can be crowded during peak tourist months, especially near beaches or popular attractions.
Inspecting Rental Car: Before driving off, inspect the car thoroughly for pre-existing damage such as scratches, dents, or windshield cracks. Take photos as evidence and ensure the condition is documented on the rental agreement. Check that all necessary equipment (spare tires, tools, etc.) is included.
Another cruise balcony ban has taken the spotlight after someone posted pictures of a common practice that is against the rules.

Carnival Cruise Line, as with other cruise lines, is always modifying rules and policies to make sure passengers stay safe and don’t cause problems for other guests.

While a passenger’s balcony is their own private space, there are also a few things that are not permitted in this area.
The cruise line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, recently took to Facebook to remind cruisers about an important activity that is not allowed on cabin balconies, even though it happens all too often.
Hanging wet clothes on balcony is not allowed
After some pictures of cruise ship balconies with laundry hanging on make-shift clothes lines started to surface, the Brand Ambassador responded to a person asking about this practice.
“No, this is absolutely not allowed for very, very important safety reasons and I know that once the cabin attendants come to the cabin that morning they will be removed,” Heald replied.
Carnival’s own website states that “clothing and towels should not be hung to dry on your balcony”.
Other methods to dry your clothes
While the fresh ocean air seems like a great place to dry those swimsuits and beach towels, they can easily be blown off the balcony and into the ocean, which is a big no-no on a cruise ship.
Most cruise ship shower areas have a clothes line that can be used to hang wet clothes. They don’t dry as quickly in this less-arid environment, but it’s the recommended way to dry wet clothes in a cabin.
Some Carnival passengers recommend magnetic hooks that can be used inside a cabin on the metal walls for hanging things like clothes, hats, and light jackets.
Carnival is also one of the few cruise lines that also has self-service laundry spaces available on board. For a few dollars you can dry your clothes in a dryer if you’d like.
Cruisers can also opt to have the crew do their laundry for them. It’s not free, but it’s better than getting into trouble for hanging clothes on the balcony.

P&O Cruises Australia has issued a formal apology following outrage over crew costumes that appeared to resemble Ku Klux Klan (KKK) attire during a Christmas-themed event onboard the Pacific Explorer.
Footage from the incident, shared online, shows eight housekeeping staff dressed in white uniforms with pointy hats, marching through the pool deck.
The crew reportedly intended to represent “upside-down snow cones” as part of the festive celebration.
However, passengers were alarmed by the costumes’ resemblance to the attire historically associated with the white supremacist group.
The video, uploaded to Facebook by a passenger with the caption, “Is this appropriate for 2024?”, quickly gained attention, sparking widespread criticism.
P&O Cruises Australia responded promptly to the backlash, expressing regret over the unintended offense caused by the costumes.
“We regret if a recent incident on a Pacific Explorer cruise offended any guests,” a spokesperson said in a statement to news.com.au.
The cruise line emphasized that the crew had no malicious intent and were unaware of the resemblance when they selected their costumes.
The cruise line further clarified the situation:
“They live and work on the cruise ship, and they have to make do with what they’ve got,
“They are wearing their cleaning uniforms, and they’ve got something on their head that looks like an upside-down snow cone.
“They had no idea, they were horrified when management said to them, ‘please take those outfits off’.”
P&O Australia communications director Lynne Scrivens
The incident occurred during a voyage from Melbourne to Hobart in December 2024, as part of a holiday celebration on the Pacific Explorer.
While the costumes were meant to be light-hearted and festive, the unintended similarity to KKK attire was deeply upsetting to passengers and viewers online.
Passengers onboard reportedly reacted with shock and confusion as the staff paraded through the pool deck in their costumes.
The incident highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity, particularly in public events where unintended symbolism can lead to significant backlash.
Many online commenters called for cruise companies to implement stricter oversight of themed events and staff costumes to prevent similar missteps in the future.
P&O Cruises Australia has not announced specific actions in response to the incident but has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests.
The cruise line will soon cease to exist, with Pacific Explorer sold to Resorts World Cruises.
The other two ships in the fleet will transfer to Carnival and become Carnival Adventure and Carnival Encounter.

The price goes up and down before your cruise and you may be able to snag a deal if you buy it at the right time. But, it’s still going to inflate the price of your cruise by several hundred dollars, maybe more.
Unfortunately, buying individual drinks from the bar can cost even more, as you’ll see from the Royal Caribbean drink menus.
So, is there a way to cheat the Royal Caribbean drink package and save some money Well, actually there are a few ways…
I’m not suggesting that you try any of these and I’d hate for you to get into trouble. But, here’s what some people have been known to do…
1. Sharing a package
What if you buy just the one alcoholic drinks package and use it to get drinks for everyone in your group? As the drink package offers an unlimited number of drinks per day, you might be considering this as an option.
Some people wonder if they can get the Deluxe Beverage Package for one person and a cheaper Refreshment Package or Soda Package for the other and then swap drinks sometimes.
Well, this goes against Royal Caribbean’s rules. And they also make it very hard for anyone to actually do that.
When you log into the Royal Caribbean Cruise Planner, it won’t actually let you buy the Deluxe Beverage Package for just one adult. All adults of legal drinking age in a stateroom must buy it, or nobody can have it.
Each time I try to untick one adult, it would untick us both…
Of course, you could always call Royal Caribbean and tell them that one person doesn’t drink, but unless you have proof of a medical condition to back that up, they won’t be able to help.
The only way that you could make this work is if you have two staterooms. I’ve been known to book two adjoining staterooms for our family of four as it actually worked out cheaper to do this when the four-berth inside rooms sold out.
Still, I wouldn’t recommend cheating the drink package in this way. If you’re caught, you’ll lose your whole package with no refund.
While there’s a requirement for all adults in a stateroom to have the package, Royal Caribbean doesn’t require kids to get any package at all. This is different from other cruise lines like MSC which make kids also get one.
So, could you order an orange juice for your kid and then go back to get your own drink 15 minutes later? It’s possible, but you’d have to be super discrete not to get caught.
2. Sneaking booze onboard
Another way that people cheat the Royal Caribbean drink package is to sneak their own booze onboard with them. So, instead of buying a drink package, you would just drink your own booze instead.
Of course, this isn’t much fun as having a drink package. It’s not like you can sneak a cocktail on board with you, is it?
The most popular method of sneaking booze on a cruise ship is with a flask that looks like a shampoo bottle.
Royal Caribbean allows guests to bring up to two 750ml bottles of wine per stateroom with them. These have to be in your carry on luggage to make it easy for port staff to check that your booze is within the limits.
Royal Caribbean states that the wine you bring onboard within your two bottles per stateroom limit must be consumed in your stateroom. If you wish to drink it in public areas then you’ll have to pay a corkage fee of $15 per bottle.
So you can’t rock up to a restaurant with your bottle of wine from home and expect to drink it without paying extra. Of course, if it’s a special bottle of Champagne or something, then the corkage fee could be worth it. But in most cases, it probably isn’t.
That said, if you pour a glass of wine in your stateroom and then take it to the restaurant with you, the waiters would have no idea that you didn’t buy the wine in the bar before dinner.
So, if you want to save a few dollars on wine, this is the way to do it.
4. Take advantage of the free drinks
Most people don’t know this, but there are actually quite a few drinks that are free of charge on Royal Caribbean cruises. When you consider all of these, you might not see a need for a drink package at all.
As well as free drinks like flavoured water, tea, coffee and chocolate milk (see the full list of free drinks here) you can sometimes get alcoholic drinks for free at certain events.
For most people, this is limited to the occasional glass of free fizz at an art auction or similar event.
However, if you stay in a suite then you’ll be able to help yourself to free drinks in the VIP lounge for several hours each day!
You might argue it’s not really ‘cheating’ but it’s definitely not the way that the cruise line intends for you to enjoy the drinks onboard!
The bottom line
If you’re looking for a bonafide method for how to cheat Royal Caribbean drink package prices, then I’m afraid it isn’t really possible. It’s not like you can just stick the drink package sticker on your cruise card and get free drinks throughout your cruise.
While there are a few ways you can do it, I wouldn’t recommend that you try, as the consequences of doing so can be serious.
Instead, I’d recommend that you buy your drink package at the best time to take advantage of any sales or special offers that can make it a bit more affordable for you. And check out what drinks are free on Royal Caribbean so you can at least enjoy those without any extra cost.
