Carnival Cruise Line Cracks Down on “Buy Me a Drink” Practice: “Strictly Forbidden”

Carnival has recently put out word that a certain “buy me a drink” practice is not allowed on their ships and is “strictly forbidden”.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Carnival Cruise Ship Celebration in port

Cruise lines are always adapting their rules and policies as new technologies and practices become popular.

And even if these practices are not common on every cruise, they try to “nip it in the bud” before it does become common place.

Sometimes, items that were once allowed on ships get added to the “banned list” after being misused as well.

Bluetooth speakers used to be allowed on cruise ships until they caused a commotion in public spaces like pool decks and lobbies.  Now, Carnival does not allow them.

Carnival Asked About “Buy Me a Drink” Practice

Another practice that started more as a joke is now in the spotlight.

Some passengers have been putting signs on their cabin doors or on their t-shirts that say “Buy me a drink” with a QR code for Venmo or other payment processor.

Although it started as a lighthearted meme, one Carnival fan decided to ask the cruise line’s brand ambassador about the practice.

The person asked,

“John Heald, what are your thoughts about cruisers who post a sign on their cabin door or hand out flyers with a Venmo asking for people to send money for drinks? Does Carnival have a rule about that?”

Venmo is a mobile payment app that allows people to quickly transfer money to someone else.  Users can send or receive money with a phone number or email address, and the app has become fairly common in the public sphere.

Heald Says It’s “Strictly Forbidden”

But Heald was straight to the point in saying that this practice was simple not permitted on Carnival cruise ships.

“Absolutely, we do. It is strictly forbidden,” he wrote. “If you have details of anybody doing this, would you please let me know those details now, and I will take care of it immediately. The solicitation of guests by guests is strictly forbidden. Thank you so much and I will be here to help so please send me the details,” Heald responded.

While it might seem overly strict to those who post these signs as a joke, Carnival has the policy in place to protect passengers from potential scams.

The cruise line also doesn’t want to provide an environment where soliciting money can make others uncomfortable.

Time will tell how this policy is enforced.  Lines tend to get blurred when things are done as a joke.

Ultimately, the cruise line has stated in the past that their goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers, and the direct way in which this question seems to reflect that.

The projects include a brand new port, Celebration Key, just for Carnival cruise ships and Royal Caribbean’s first Royal Beach Club.

Here is a look at these two new cruise destinations that you will soon be able to visit.

Celebration Key

Celebration Key is a new port under construction that is opening on Grand Bahama Island. It’s located around 25 miles east of Freeport (where cruise ships currently dock on the island).

The port will only be visited by Carnival cruise ships and is currently scheduled to open on July 19, 2025. A pier will allow up to two Carnival cruise ships to visit the port each day. The pier will eventually be expanded so four Carnival Funships can visit at a time.

The port will be divided up into five portals:

  • Paradise Plaza – Welcome center with live music, an ice cream shop, and more
  • Calypso Lagoon – Adult-friendly portal
  • Starfish Lagoon – Family-friendly portal
  • Pearl Cove Beach Club – Adults-only area
  • Lokono Club – Bahamian shopping

The port will feature the largest freshwater lagoons in the Caribbean and will have something for everyone, from beaches to pools.

Debuting with the opening of the port will be Island Eats. Island Eats will allow guests to use their Sign & Sail card to enjoy one complimentary meal while visit the port.

Celebration Key will also have full service restaurants where guests can receive 25% off an entrée.

18 Carnival cruise ships are scheduled to visit Celebration Key on over 500 itineraries. You can see a list of all of these cruises here.

Once the port opens and is completed, Carnival Cruise Line has plans for a Phase 2 that includes a water park.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island

Royal Beach Club Nassau

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island is the first of two new beach clubs being built by Royal Caribbean. It is currently under construction in Nassau on Paradise Island and is scheduled to open near the end of the year.

This private Oasis will be for Royal Caribbean passengers only. The entry fee to access the beach club includes all food and drinks, making it an all-inclusive beach and pool day. A short water shuttle will take guests from the pier right to the club.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island will have the world’s largest swim-up bar.

The world’s largest swim-up bar will be located at the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island.

The beach club will be divided up in the following three zones:

  • Family Beach
  • Chill Beach
  • Party Cove

The Family Beach will be located steps away from the Shallow End zero-entry pool. Beach games will range from tug-of-war to paddle ball.

The Ultimate Family Cabana will have a thrilling slide, dedicated hot tub, frozen drink machine and more.

The Chill Beach will be the spot for relaxation on Paradise Island. The Deep End of the pool will be by the white, powdery sand of Chill Beach.

Artist rendering of the Royal Beach Club in Nassau.

Party Cove will live up to its name, the place to keep the party vibes going. It will have the world’s largest swim-up bar, a VIP space, and personal poolside service with the best views.

This 17 acre beach club will have three swim-up bars, seven beach bars, and more than 40 cabanas.

Royal Caribbean is working on the project with the Bahamian government to bring architectural design and experience that includes live music, local artisan shops and culinary fare.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island is scheduled to open in December 2025.

The cruise line is also working on a Royal Beach Club in Cozumel that will open at a later date.

What Makes A Great Captain? Leadership Lessons From Sports

A great captain doesn’t just guide; they build them. They are the force that bonds players or teams through thick and thin and pushes them to embrace victory. These leaders, whether on a playing field, court, or pitch, introduce the spirit, message, and challenge to people to rise beyond barriers. Their presence alters everything.

The Role of Communication

Leadership is said to rely heavily on communication as one of the most critical processes. Clear-headed and purposeful admirals steer their ships through the worst of storms. Communication has little to do with telling people what to do; it has more to do with ensuring everybody understands what they are supposed to do and that they are not alone. Tools like the Melbet official website offer excellent examples of seamless communication in action, enabling clarity and connection. Communication can build, inspire, and sometimes soothe during distress.

The ability to speak is less critical than the ability to listen. Effective communication is respected and trusted by the teammates. Captains listen to all the teammates. They address what others do not observe, address concerns, and ensure the environment is welcoming. This interaction also assures that everyone is working in agreement, creating harmony in the entire system.

Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

Great captains read the room. They understand how to work with people of different characters, resolve peaceful conflicts, and help their team members develop. Emotional intelligence, therefore, cannot be a luxury but an imperative for leadership.

Key traits of emotionally intelligent captains:

  • Empathy: Emotional intelligence includes recognizing how teammates feel or what they are going through.
  • Self-awareness: Identifying one’s feelings and the ability to control them.
  • Conflict resolution: Being able to solve problems without getting angry.
  • Adaptability: Strategies can be used during work depending on the group members.

These skills foster trust and loyalty, so every player feels and wants to be part of the team.

Strategic Vision and Decision-Making

Captains are the masterminds of success, charting a team’s course. Their focus on potential risks and consideration of changes to circumstances turn fine teams into invincible forces. Visionary management planning is not a process that begins when the whistle is blown. Platforms like https://www.instagram.com/melbet.pakistan_official/ showcase how strategic insights can inspire a winning mindset.

Strategies to Employ while Playing the Games

A captain on the field has very decisive instincts, which are always the deciding factor between winning and losing. Fast decision-making allows them to outmaneuver everyone on their side during and especially in critical events.

They respond to game conditions in actual circumstances. Who and when to go for it, and who and when to change the formation, can turn the tide in a match. They also convey tactics well so that each team member understands what they can do in a fast-changing environment. Tactical proficiency is not the accumulation of knowledge of how to do things; it is the ability to do things right under stressful conditions.

Long-Term Team Building

The best captains win games and produce a legacy. They foster development by training up-and-coming talent and establishing order. It helps to see the results of their work: the new captains will continue the successful performance. Thus, they develop high standards that others are more than willing to emulate long after the person is out of the picture.

In other words, they ensure what is called for on the field and promote harmony off the field. From what they eat together to how they address every member, they make the individual feel valued and needed in the team. This fosters teamwork, breaks barriers within the team, and fosters friendships that may go far beyond football. Such companionship is good for the team in games and life, and it makes the impact left by the team incredible.

Leading by Example

It is universally agreed that words, especially those in the heat of the battle, count for less than what people do. They represent commitment, punctuality to training, determination during intense workouts, and excellence in each game. When teammates look at their captain and see her working their guts out, the rest will not hesitate to do the same. Commitment is rubbing off, and one must be blind to argue that leadership is not more apparent.

Great captains also must accept the blame and steer the team when operations are not going as planned. Sports icons such as Michael Jordan and Cristiano Ronaldo are known to have worked hard to lift teams to greater heights. Their example can be relied on to inspire more trust and encourage other team members to embrace these standards while performing their tasks.

Handling Pressure and Adversity

The captain’s skills can alter the game’s result and the player’s behavior when under pressure can be influenced. High stakes are managed well while making decisions that ensure the team is stable. Perseverance is the spirit of success. They keep their team going through thick and thin to ensure every player is on their toes, waiting for the final whistle to blow.

Ambassador and CFC Merge to Create New European Cruise Brand With Three-Ship Fleet

UK-based Ambassador Cruise Line and France’s Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) are merging to form Ambassador Group, a new European cruise brand.

Ambassador Group Ships

The combined fleet will feature three mid-size ships and focus on expanding into key European markets, offering no-fly cruises alongside new Caribbean itineraries.

The newly formed brand will unite Ambassador’s Ambience and Ambition with CFC’s Renaissance, each retaining its distinctive British and French onboard experiences.

The merger is set to be finalised by the end of January 2025.

Caribbean Expansion and Sustainable Initiatives

A notable highlight of the merger is the launch of a Caribbean cruise program in October 2025, marking a significant departure from the cruise lines’ traditional no-fly offerings.

Cruises will target source markets in the UK, France, and the Netherlands, with embarkation ports including Barbados, Martinique, and Curaçao.

The Caribbean series will be operated in partnership with Dutch travel operator Corendon, which also owns Corendon Airlines, a likely backbone for the fly-cruise packages. Few additional details about the itineraries have been revealed.

Sustainability remains a key focus for the new company. The 1,200-guest Renaissance, refurbished in 2023, will enter dry dock in January 2025 to install IMO Tier III environmental technologies, aligning it with the International Maritime Organization’s stringent nitrogen oxide emission standards. Both Ambassador ships are already compliant.

Tapping into a growing market

The merger positions Ambassador Group to tap into Europe’s growing cruise market, projected to increase by 12% over the next five years.

“The combination of Ambassador and CFC is a bold step towards our shared vision for the cruise industry. By uniting our strengths, we are creating an organisation that delivers exceptional experiences to our guests while upholding sustainable practices.”

Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line

“CFC is a new and growing French brand, and this merger with Ambassador, a successful, ambitious British brand that wants to grow markets and destinations, is extremely positive for both businesses, maximising synergies to create a formidable force in the cruise industry.”

Maëlysse Pierrot-Guibourt, CEO of CFC

The three ships in the fleet reflect the unique legacies of both brands.

  • Renaissance: Formerly Holland America Line’s Maasdam, entered service in 1993. It underwent a major renovation before launching with CFC and accommodates 1,200 guests.
  • Ambience: Built in 1991, this 1,400-guest vessel joined Ambassador in 2022 and previously sailed with P&O Cruises Australia.
  • Ambition: Formerly known as AIDAmira, this 1,248-guest ship joined Ambassador in 2023 after serving with AIDA Cruises and several other lines.

Following the merger, the new company aims to maintain the cultural identity of each ship, appealing to a broad range of European cruisers.

Queen Anne departs Southampton for historic maiden world voyage

This is the moment Cunard’s newest luxury ship Queen Anne embarked on her historic 107-night maiden world voyage from Southampton, marking a new chapter in the cruise line’s distinguished history.

Spectators gathered across the city to witness the ship’s 9pm departure last night (9 January), which was celebrated with a dazzling fireworks display.

The 3,000-guest ship will make her first American landfall in New York on 17 January, a city that has an enduring connection to Cunard and has welcomed Cunarders and their guests longer than any other destination.

Queen Anne becomes the 14th ship in Cunard’s illustrious history to undertake a full world voyage. Notably, Queen Anne will also be the largest Cunarder to achieve a full circumnavigation of the globe.

Over 107 nights, Queen Anne will call at 30 different ports across 18 countries. Highlights of the voyage include iconic calls to Miami, San Francisco, the Panama Canal, Honolulu, Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong and more. Guests will also cross the International Date Line on 12 February, experiencing the rare phenomenon of ‘jumping through time’.

The full world voyage also includes overnight stops in New York, Honolulu, Sydney, and Singapore, with Queen Anne returning to the south coast on 27 April.

Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, said: “This is a significant moment for Cunard as Queen Anne begins her maiden world voyage. It’s especially fitting that her first visit to the USA will be New York, a city that has long been at the heart of Cunard’s story. This voyage celebrates our heritage while offering guests the opportunity to explore the world in the style and luxury only Cunard can provide. Queen Anne truly reflects the evolution of our brand, and this journey will be an unforgettable experience for all on board.”

On board, guests will enjoy a variety of curated experiences, including world-class entertainment and a spectacular sailaway party, with celebrations continuing throughout the voyage.

Highlights will include a special World Voyage cocktail party and a shoreside Gala Event – as well as enriching talks from notable speakers, such as Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE, hypnotist Paul McKenna, actor Charley Boorman and former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash.

Queen Anne

Queen Anne’s design concepts have been founded on heritage, craftman-ship, style, storytelling, and innovation, and the 14-deck ship offers travellers several breath-taking experiences, and more choices of entertainment, dining, and bars than ever before.

She also boasts the widest selection of fitness, beauty, thermal and spa facilities so far seen on a Cunard ship, with her reimagined Mareel Wellness & Beauty proposition – spearheaded by an exclusive Harper’s Bazaar Wellness at Sea programme – heralding a new era of wellbeing at sea.

Royal Caribbean Passenger Faces $1,300 Cell Phone Bill Due to Common Oversight

A Royal Caribbean passenger’s relaxing cruise turned into a costly lesson after returning home to discover a $1,300 cell phone bill, stemming from a simple but expensive mistake.

Royal Caribbean Phone Bill

The incident highlights the importance of preparation and vigilance when managing technology on cruise vacations.

The passenger, who has not been named, assumed their purchase of Royal Caribbean’s WiFi package covered all cell phone use while onboard.

However, their device was not set to Airplane Mode, allowing it to connect to the ship’s roaming network.

As a result, the phone silently racked up roaming charges, downloading background updates and data throughout the cruise.

Adding to the financial sting, the passenger’s child unknowingly compounded the issue by streaming videos using the same phone. The combined usage led to the eye-watering bill.

When contacted, Royal Caribbean stated that it is each passenger’s responsibility to ensure devices are placed in Airplane Mode, and the cruise line declined liability for the charges.

A common problem at sea

This type of issue is not unique to Royal Caribbean.

Smartphones can incur substantial roaming charges on cruises, even when locked away in a cabin safe, as apps, updates, and downloads continue to run in the background.

Popular YouTube personality Jayson Judson brought attention to this case, cautioning viewers about the financial traps onboard cruise ships, which often result from passenger oversights.

While some carriers like T-Mobile occasionally adjust bills for roaming charges, others, such as AT&T and Verizon, may not be as forgiving.

Mobile technology isn’t the only source of unexpected expenses.

Cruise ship arcades are another potential financial pitfall, especially for families. Arcade machines typically require passengers to swipe their cabin room key for access, but costs aren’t always displayed.

This makes it easy for children to unknowingly rack up hundreds of dollars in charges, often only discovered when the final bill arrives.

To avoid such surprises, parents are encouraged to:

  • Set spending limits on room key cards before boarding.
  • Switch all devices to Airplane Mode to prevent roaming charges.
  • Monitor children’s activities closely, particularly in areas like the arcade.

While cruising offers incredible experiences, this incident serves as a cautionary tale about potential financial pitfalls.

By taking proactive steps and educating all travellers about spending limits and device management, cruisers can avoid unexpected costs and enjoy a stress-free vacation.

Father Dies After Jumping From Cruise Ship on Boxing Day With Harrowing Final Words

A 51-year-old father-of-four tragically died on Boxing Day after jumping from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic in the Caribbean, despite his family’s desperate attempts to restrain him.

Norwegian Epic

Dan McGilvray, a financial advisor from Broomfield, Colorado, reportedly overpowered his family members, including his 75-year-old mother, before leaping from the balcony of the cruise ship at approximately 3 pm.

McGilvray is said to have screamed, “I can’t take it anymore,” before plunging into the sea.

The incident unfolded as the ship sailed near the Bahamas.

Failed rescue efforts

The Norwegian Epic immediately halted its journey to initiate search and rescue operations.

Efforts by the Royal Bahamas Police Force and OPBAT, a multi-agency rescue unit, were unsuccessful.

“Preliminary reports indicate that despite attempts to restrain him, he jumped from a balcony into the sea. Rescue efforts…proved fruitless in locating him,”

Police statement

The ship eventually diverted to Nassau, where the Royal Bahamas Police Force concluded their search.

A GoFundMe campaign launched to support McGilvray’s wife, Heather, and their four sons has raised over $36,000 (£29,000) to assist the family during this difficult time.

The campaign described McGilvray as “brilliant, honest, hardworking, funny and devoted to his family and friends.”

It continued: “Dan was the primary provider for their family, and the next year will be incredibly difficult for Heather to support her boys and learn to live without Dan. Thank you for honouring his legacy with any support you can provide.”

Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement offering condolences.

“The guest was traveling with a large group and his family on board is being attended to and supported during this very challenging situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

NCL statement

McGilvray’s death is being investigated by authorities in the Bahamas, who suspect a possible reaction to medication prescribed for seizures may have contributed to the distressing event.

While rare, it’s not unheard of for people to jump from a cruise ship, although when it does happen it often occurs overnight, implying that alcohol may be a factor.

There were other incidents in December 2024, including a woman who attempted to jump from Sky Princess but instead hit a lifeboat and landed on a lower deck. Tragically she also lost her life.

It is extremely unlikely that anyone jumping from a ship could survive.

Incidents are almost always intentional too – there are railings in place to prevent anyone slipping and falling, and so only someone choosing to jump or acting unsafe by climbing on railings would be likely to fall.

It also highlights how jumping overboard is a very serious issue, and not one to be trivialised – as this TikTok content creator found out after a huge backlash to her onboard ‘prank’ when she told a crew member she was going to jump off the ship.

Who Owns Ambassador Cruise Line?

Ambassador Cruise Line is one of the newest ocean cruise lines in the world, having been founded in 2021. But where did the cruise line come from, and who’s behind it?

And what’s the big change in 2025?

Ambassador cruise ship

In this guide, I’ll clear up some of the background info for Ambassador Cruise Line, including its ties to a former cruise line.

The Ambassador Group

Ambassador Cruise Line was formed as a private company that was not owned by another cruise line company.

However in 2025 it was announced that the cruise line was merging with Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC), a cruise line based in France, to become The Ambassador Group.

Other British cruise lines tend to be part of bigger companies. P&O Cruises is owned by the Carnival Corporation, and Marella Cruises is part of the TUI Group.

Ambassador Cruise Line is still smaller, and the Ambassador Group only has three ships – but it is now part of a group rather than being completely indepenent.

Ambassador’s history

Ambassador Cruise Line was a completely new cruise line that was formed in 2021. However, some people believe it is a reincarnation of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, a British cruise line that ceased trading in 2020. The company does have ties to CMV, including being based in the same area and having the same CEO.

So it would be naive to say the companies are not linked at all – the fact that one cruise line went defunct and then its CEO formed part of a new company, based in the same area and serving the same market, just a year later is hardly a coincidence.

Yet from an official and legal standpoint, the companies are completely distinct, which is understandable considering CMV had to cease trading under administration.

Ambassador is positioned slightly differently to CMV. Ambassador is not a luxury cruise line but it is more premium, whereas Cruise & Maritime Voyages was more of a cheap, traditional cruise offering.

Ambassador Cruise Line’s base of operations

Ambassador Cruise Line is based in Purfleet, Essex. Most of the cruises that are operated by the cruise line sail from London Tilbury, the nearest port to Purfleet. However, the second ship in the fleet, Ambition, offers cruises from regional ports around the UK as well.

Ambassador cruise ship

Her home port will still be London Tilbury, but guests can also book cruises from Newcastle, Dundee, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol and Falmouth.

The fleet’s history

Ambassador Cruise Line currently has two ships in the fleet. The first, Ambience, was purchased from Ocean Builders, where there had been talks of converting her into a floating hotel.

Prior to that, the ship had sailed for P&O Cruises Australia as Pacific Dawn, and before that she had debuted as Regal Princess for Princess Cruises, back in 2001.

The second ship in the fleet, Ambition, was purchased from AIDA Cruises where she had sailed as AIDAmira. Before that, she had sailed for Costa Cruises as the Costa neoRiviera, for Ibero cruises as Grand Mistral, and originally she debuted as Mistral for Festival Cruises in 1999.

Ambassador Cruise Line is ABTA registered

Ambassador Cruise Line has been registered with ABTA since September 2022. While the cruise line was not a part of ABTA when it first formed, all guests are now protected by the scheme.

ABTA stands for the Association of British Travel Agents and it is a safety net for guests – if a company is registered with ABTA and then for any reason has to fold or go bust, it means that guests are guaranteed a refund of their booking, even if the company itself can’t afford to pay.

It also means that, if a company goes bust while you’re abroad on holiday with them, you will be transported home.

You can read more details about Ambassador Cruise Line’s ABTA registration and their Financial Failure Insurance policies on the cruise line’s website.

Final word

Ambassador Cruise Line definitely has some past ties to Cruise & Maritime Voyages but with a different fleet of ships and a brand new management team, barring CEO Christian Verhounig, it is a new company.

It does fill the gap in the market left by CMV though – offering no-fly cruises from the UK with a primary audience of over 50s. However, the newer ships and more premium style of cruising have a broad appeal so adults of any age can enjoy a cruise with them.

The 2025 changes, including the merger with Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) to form the Ambassador Group, shouldn’t take anything away from the experiences that the cruise line offers.

Both brands will still maintain their individual itineraries. The only big exciting thing is the launch of Caribbean cruises for the group, which has previously specialised in no-fly cruises from the UK (Ambassador) and France (CFC).
